[Q] Optimum RAM/Memory Space - HTC Sensation

So i was wondering for the HTC Sensation 4g, what is the best RAM/Memory free you should have normally?
When i first had the Sense 3.0 version of the ARHD ROM i would have 150M - 200M and i would lose text messages? I bought "Ghostly SMS" to prevent this and use it still just incase i still lose text messages, which i still do. (3 Text Messages lost over 1 month, usually when they a bunch come in at the same time)
Anyways, with MIUI i had 300M - 400M. And now with ARHD Sense 3.6, i get 200M - 240M with only GOSMS Pro running. With another app running, it usually hits 150M.
So is there like an optimum memory amount you should have? I want to switch to Sense 4.0 (OrDroid) but i feel like it would kill my RAM a lot?

You want atleast 65 MB free. This is enough to launch an application or two without delay. At that point, Android will close an app or two to keep the free ram around there. Trust me, more used ram isn't a bad thing and doesn't mess with battery life or anything. Sense 4.0 will run just fine.

Thanks for that, I usually have more than 65MB so thats goood. I just didnt want Android killing the Messaging App on Sense 4.0 if it did happen.
Switching to OrDroid now!

Team PkMn has an amazing Sense 4.0 rom out too! I was using OrDroid but the tweaks in Charmander 4.1 are SO worth the swap.

I just switched to to Team PkMn's Sense 4.0 ROM and the tweaks are worth the swap. The only problem is half the tweaks arent registering for me. Ive been trying to change the "H" icon to "4G" but it doesnt change. The Transparency for the status bar doesnt either. I think the Status Bar tweaks just dont work for me.
I dont know if its because i installed something to show battery % inside the battery bar, but i doubt that.

[ROM][Sense][13/03] Mini-Sense 1.0 - FITS IN 180MB HBOOT / 213MB FREE ON DATA

MINI-SENSE
Mini-Senseless is a stripped down version of the excellent teppic74 ROM. It fits the "Bravo Sense" AlphaRev partition which gives me 213MB free on data after install, which is plenty enough for me. I've been using this ROM for several days now and haven't had any problems at all. The battery life was also very good.
This ROM was made for my personal use only but I decided to share it because someone else could also find it useful.
Enjoy
Highlights:
Exactly the same as teppic74's ROM v3.1, only lots of applications removed
Fits in 180MB system partition
213MB free on data
Most of the removed applications available on market
Good battery life
What has been changed:
Removed Rosie launcher and all Sense widgets
Removed most of the social apps - Facebook, Peep, FriendStream, etc
Removed all Google apps that are available on the Market - Gmail, YouTube, Maps, etc
Removed the RSS reader
Removed the HTC keyboard
Added Zeam as the default launcher, install another launcher if needed
Added the standard Froyo keyboard
... that's it, I think
Download:
Mini-Sense v1.0 (mirror)
Installation:
Flash "Bravo Sense" HBOOT partition. Instructions are found at the AlphaRev site.
Flash the .zip file from recovery. Erase /data and /cache partitions.
(optional) Flash this addon (mirror) to enable trackball to wake the phone
(optional) Install any of these teppic74 addons: (HIGH) POWERSAVING MODPACK, MINOR TWEAKS, RESTORE BOOTSOUND, A2SD+, SD READAHEAD
Warning:
Use at your own risk!
Do a nandroid backup first!
Do NOT install any addons that add files to /system (very little free space there)

Read the post before asking a stupid question
one small question: what brings an Sense ROM without the Sense "goodness" (Widgets, Rosie usw.)? There are enough "stock" Andoid ROMs!?
it gives you the other htc functionalities, such as linking contacts to fb accounts n pictures which is quite lacking on AOSP, if you miss the widgets so bad try LauncherPro, or stick to sense...
Is the linking funktion not a part of Friedstream?
Or is the Facebook provider a seperate part?
Has nothing to do with friendstream, its an HTC feature...
Sent from my HTC Desire
Its an HTC feature but it is also built into stock. The difference is that it isn't so aesthetically pleasing on stock.
But I think I agree with the above. I love the idea of a mini sense rom, but the Widgets are some of the best features of sense. Without them I fail to see the point in sense over stock? Plus, surely our memory will just go down again to stock once I install the Google apps I need which is pretty much all of them?
Great idea though

I had something like this on my to do list for a while before I was distracted by other things.
I really appreciate this here, thank you.

Now that is just perfect, I don't particularly like the sense launcher, so I tried using AOSP roms. I liked the oxygen rom since it's blazingly fast, it does have some issues that I can work around, but I cannot LIVE without the "People" app.
Now I realize why it's called one of the 7 wonders of the new smartphone apps
Sounds good. Been looking for something like this since Supervillain stopped being updated. I've been using Sense for the last few weeks so will see if i can switch over again. New memory card arriving this week so will try it out then.
Well, there are certain benefits even if you have widgets stripped off from a Sense ROM. For example:
- Stability! - all latest stock ROMs have different issues (light sensor, 2 sec delay, USB speed, reboots once in a while, etc)
- Dialer / People are more advanced than stock
- Little HTC improvements, like the dialog when USB is connected
- HTC lock screen, which I find more pleasant to use
- Camera app is better
- Album app is better than Gallery
- ... lots of other small things
I realize most bullets from the list above are a matter of personal preference, that is why I have stated in my first post that this ROM is made to suit my needs. If someone else finds it useful - I'd be glad to hear that... just take it as it is
Cheers
so this is a sense rom with some of the best parts of sense ripped out?
Thanx alot!! i appreciate the effort. One slight concern how is the battery life when compared to gingerbread roms as i am getting very good battery life on cm7.

I've been using this ROM for over a week now. Before that I was on Redux and Oxygen for several weeks. I would say the battery life is comparable. This is my opinion of course, your mileage may vary.

Not to me. I don't use Sense launcher, widgets, RSS, Peep or FriendStream. Everything else (Sense related) is included in the ROM (or could be installed later). If you define these as "the best parts of sense" then you'd better take a look at some of the other Sense ROMs available.
I want to go back on what I originally said. I have to say, I think the idea in principal is great - I just feel too many things have been cut out for my liking. I wonder, since you say you deleted all HTC widgets, does this mean you have removed the standard htc flip clock with the weather + weather animations? They are possibly my favourite sense features...? I would certainly give it a go if they were still in it, or would it be easy to add them back in?
Also, I currently use A2SD and never fill it. Would the extra 100mb or so be enough for me to make the jump onto this non a2sd rom?
One more question, can the mods from teppic74 rom thread mentioned in the first post also be applied to this rom? I would like to try some of the addons if yes. Btw the rom feels great so far. Thanx
Is'ent thos ROM possible without S-Off? cant get it to work, the S-Off that is...

MIUI ROM, My impressions.

So after running pretty much all the roms available for the XT720, I have to say the new MIUI rom beats them all. I came from dexters froyo 1.3 with bug patch. And for some odd reason it was extremely slow and laggy for me. Even with autokiller optimizer id start out with 60 MB free memory and slowly after some use itd come down to 19-20 mb. Anyways this is how I feel about the new MIUI ROM.
MIUI BETA 4:
This has got to be the fastest ROM ever. I had gotten used to using the laggy XT720 and hating it in the process but whoa am I amazed at how fast this one is. You can just fly through applications and menu's without lag. No lag when you open the keyboard, and the most annoying for me was how the keyboard would lag while using haptic feedback which I love. Dont be put off by the theme in the start everything from the boot screen, to the lock screen can be changed using the theme manager. Theres also a bunch of extra functionality. Like for eg flip to stop active ring, if you pick up the phone while its ringing the ringer volumes goes down. Contacts can be divided into groups, favourite messages etc.
The only draw back with this ROM were if you set up swap it seems to drain the battery really quick. like 10 % / 2.5 hours. I use milestone overclock at 56 vsel 1 Ghz and its pretty stable. I love this ROM and whats been put into it. Waiting for the camera app, HDMI out and other little tweaks here and there to be complete. Thanks Khal!
well I run bluesteel Tom. I have modified it some startup 65+memory avg running memory is between 75 to 90 I only know overclock to 800.
Very fast system no lag at all.

I would like to see your list of removed system apps dude..... Bluesteel was like all the other dxter based froyo for me.. works great with memory management for a few days, then slowly memory reduces down to the 19 to 21mb range & performance goes in the crapper.
Can someone explain in detail how I can install Minimod? I know how to install OR but not Minimod.

F*ck MIUI! I really hate this ROM. Every time I see my phone with MIUI it makes me wanna trow it. It looks UGLY by every mean!
Despide MIUI is stable and fast, I think that if you clean BlueSteal v4 it's better. I have better quadrant benchmark resoults too. 1497 with MIUI and 1601 (personal record) with BlueSteal. I start with around 70 free ram on BS and after all widget start (a few, not much) and I use it a little bit it goes down to 45-50, but it's enough. ROM is very stable and responsive. With fj kernal I stay on 60-65 free all the time.

I am interested to see this too. 3rdstring has a list going, but always nice to see another pov. I have same doggish problems too. To the point I am considering 2.1 for awile. Pulling low 1200's in quadrant, but don't take too much stock in that if everything is lagging.

Lol, to each his own I guess. Im pretty sure you are put off by the theme. Blue steels theme was pretty ****ty too. And I dont like updating themes through open recovery its just a pain in the ass. I always just adb push the ubuntu font onto my rom and then change the themes. With MIUI its much easier. Have you ever used a phone with stock MIUI it is on of the most responsive devices ever. I have always had problems with dexters based ROM's. If you have any tricks up your sleeve please share.

If memory got dumped just:
Running services --> Stop!
If doesn't help, Manage Applications --> Force stop!
I don't use Advance task killer, it just dones't work...
Also keep it low on widgets!
Programs running all the time : WidgetLocker, BobD3 Clock, SystemInfo Widget, SwitchPro Widget, SetCPU, Fancy Widget, BattStatt, Launcher Pro Plus twitter and ALYac antivirus real-time scan...
The way I install my ROMs is:
1. Always Flash to stock 2.1 true RSD --> Factory reset!
2. Install Dexter Froyo -> wipe dalvik-cache/Wipe Data/ Facrory reset/ wipe Cache
3. Delete SD card craps from Dexter Froyo --> Factory reset (just in any case)
4. Install Khal's BlueStealEpicv4 -->wipe dalvik-cache/Wipe Data/ Facrory reset/ wipe cache
5. Factory reset (just in any case)
6. Delete - Talk, LatinIMEtutorial, Facebook,Tweetdeck,... etc.
P.S. I always reformat and repartition my SD card Fat32/ext3/swap(for any case )
It my seem too much, but it works for me.

You may wanna try this one http://www.multiupload.com/T05RW5U5HK ... real MIUI. The one you flashed is not actually a MIUI.
Also remember to flash Dexter 1.3 first and wipe dalvik-cache / cache partition / factory reset after restoring.
Hi, just install differtent launcher and change the menue style. After that You have original android feeling with miui advantages.
I use zeam launcher which makes the system very smooth.

Hi eSu.Matix,
i'm currently running the steelepicblue as well, it's way nicer than MIUI..I cleaned almost all the system apps and my available RAM is now always between 50 and 70 MB, however, i've never been able to reach that Quadrant score...
What tweaks did you apply? Thank you very much in advance!
Hi,
I love the Miui Rom for :
1. Lot of setting option posibility in Setting page.
2. Like the Toggle bar IN STATUS BAR (FULL SIZE <->) you can scroll left and right. (must have), Its easy to read and have 90% toggle icon we need.
3. Like how easy is to modify or change and customizing theme.
what i dont like is:
The rom is not fully compatible with our XT720
This rom contain some bug for XT720.
Camera have some bug and low resolution env 5meg, HDMI not working at all, VPN dosen't work on my XT720 ON VIDEOTRON NETWORK.
But even that, i have difficulty to leave away. i realy love and need the toggle bar INSIDE the notification bar.
It's is possible to have TOGGLE BAR IN STATUS BAR in other rom
like MIUI, full size <-> , scrolling, good look, easy to toggle etc.
but i realy dont like the LOOK OF toggleBar that use some rom like V4 rom GalaxyXT version

Launcher Pro Lag

Running Sensation XE...
Does anyone have lag when switching between the home screens?
I have 5 screens all pretty much full with desktop visualizer widgets.
I realise this might be alot for the phone to handle, and the problem is not THAT bad, but it is something I would like to know more about solving.
First of all can anyone tell me if Launcher Pro is an 'Overlay' to Sense, then presumably sense is still running in the background?
So would deleting all the widgets I used to have when running sense help? (from the screens) or clearing sense data through settings-applications.

If you have launcher pro set as the default launcher the sense launcher should not still be running, things from sense however may still be running, like weather. I noticed lag with lp, adw seemed to be better. I actually prefer sense, though I'm in the minority for that. I would personally remove all widgets and icons from sense launcher to be on the safe side if you're not planning on using it.
Many Sense things remain running in the background even if you don't use it, including the Launcher and Rosie, even if you don't use them at all. Sense is part of the ROM, so really invasive.
If you're using Launcher Pro, and never Sense, you should flash a Non-Sense script to completly remove Sense (or freeze it with Titanium backup)
That's what I do=> No Sense script from Mike1986, Android Revolution HD thread, post 2. It's supposed to work with every ROM
It will already be really faster.
Then go into Launcher pro options, advanced options, memory usage:
most of the time, by default, memory usage is set to light or medium. With the Sensation, and all the free RAM we have, you should set it to high or maximum memory usage.
Once it done, using Launcher pro with 5 pages full of widgets (like mine) will be as smooth or smoother that Sense.
NOTE: Sense is optimized to handle correctly or both cores, Launcher Pro may take time to wake the second core. But if you force CPU1 online, it will fly!
(no no, it won 't kill your battery, you'll just always consume 192mhz more, but your device will suddenly be so smoother that you will reduce your max CPU clock, so in the whole, battery drain is the same for better overall performances)
I'm surprised no one else suggested you use a different launcher that's being attended to. The developer of Launcher Pro updated it quite often up until he released the Plus(paid) version, now he doesn't update at all. I know of the lag issue you're having, as I've had it myself. It's basically old code trying to run along side new code. I promise you if you choose a different launcher you won't run into this problem. I too loved Launcher Pro, but even the most beloved apps need a little maintenance once in awhile.
this is the first time ive heard tht launcherpro is lagging. it never lags on me. ive been using it since the original g1! no lag

I had the pro version on my three last android mobiles also. Never had a lag. I have all set to full speed in settings and it flies.
Never had a problem.

even on the stock rom, the day I had my Sensation, Launcher Pro was smoother than Sense, once well configured.
Now with custom ROMS and kernels, both are smooth

DIY: Make your Touch senseless

Okay, I searched in our Glacier box and I didn't find any thread about this
First, I'm not any serious developer, I'm just a dude who likes to personalize his cell phone, that's all Android about, right? This is just a tip of how I learned myself to de-sense my cell , this is not ingenious idea and I'm some of us must know about it but the rest doesn't so I want to share it to every one. So... I'm not going to take any responsible for your action to your cell.
You like Sense but the Sense Rosie can slow down your cell and you use other launcher(s) most of the time, and you can't get away from sense applications. You tried Senseless Roms but they didn't let you to change the shortcut on the ring lock screen or they didn't have that. There is a simple way to do it!
I tried this way with sense 3.0 and sense 3.5, and trying to convince my friend to lend me his Sensation XE to de-sense 3.6 and 4.0
What you need:
-A Sense Rom rooted, obviously
-Any root explorer
-That's all
Steps:
-Backup your cell first!!!
-Flash your favorite Sense Rom
-After the flashing is done, get in your cell and start arranging everything you can with sense, including change lock screen type, lock screen shortcuts, etc.
-Everything is in place now? Are you ready to get rid of sense?
-Open your root explorer and go to /system/app, and you can move/delete all apks with 'Widget3d' or '3dWidget' (i don't remember) in their names and the apk named 'rosie'
-After you deleted everything, copy 'Launcher2.apk', I attached, to that path and restart your cell
-Now your cell is de-sense and smooth
Hope everyone would find this thread useful
PS: if any one of you want to know how to make your lock screen looks like sense 4 (without the shortcut background and ring background), let me know, it's quite easy to do it
Cheers!!!

I agree, right now, I'm CoreDroid rom, and after I desensed it, now I have >350mb free of RAM for apps I'm using GO launcher though
The "free RAM for apps" is useless. As long as your amount of free RAM at any given time is less than what the biggest app will require, you're not doing your phone any good but wasting your HW. Android manages the rest.
There were many threads about it, in many forums on XDA. Android isn't a desktop OS, it works differently.
The guide is useful for those using Sense with other launchers than Rosie - they don't need Rosie and widgets anyway, and all the services that are connected to those.

[Q] Reasons to use ICS or JB instead of GB in my i9003?

Hi,
I wanted to know if there are reasons of why we should try IceCreamSandwich or JellyBean roms for daily usage that still have bugs, other than keep with Gingerbread, and in my case, Frankenstein´s rom.
What I really want to know are if ICS and JB have some benefits, or we just want to use them because they are new.
I only have my SL phone, and that´s the reason I don´t want to start flashing lots of roms again... just want one that works well and in which battery lasts reasonable time.
My normal daily use is:
· 1 hour speak
· mostly 2g or wifi connection. Almost no navigation.
· lot of whatsapp
· 30 min average of bluetooth
· sometimes some gps
With this use, my battery lasts aproximately 2 days.
I don´t play games, I don´t watch movies... I just use it as a regular mobile + whatsapp, gps, adidas micoach, jefit, and small apps.
I think it would be good to receive some advice of those who tried different roms.
Thanks for your time, and hope this thread is useful to solve other questions also.
The reason is that people get bored of same old UI.
So we try ICS and JB.
They do support UI flexibility.
Also performance of phone increases in games[That's not for you]
And They also support more number of apps than GB.
But be sure that you won't get same battery backup though.

some apps dont work on GB (google chrome, google now, etc..), thats why i switched to JB...
battery wise, mine last a day (using an internet simcard and switched to 2g), used only for updates, whatsapp and viber...
if you were to switch to a custom rom, i would suggest you use jellybam...
But jelly bean and ICS have lower autonomie than GB
About 1 or 2 day

That's the risk to use JB or ICS, but if you use Jelly Bam the recommend version + Revolution Kernel = your phone live about 1,5 day or 2 day (I'm on Jelly Bam)
Of course, your phone still need some setting in the performance menu, suggested governor: SmartassV.2 with min speed 300 and max speed 1000 or 1200. That should give you no lag but battery saving phone. If you think your phone taking too much power, use CPU Spy, you can found it on Play Store

According to this, there's no reason to go for ICS or JB (Plus, these are NOT totally stable/reliable/functional).
Stick to good GB kernel/roms.

Well..
I tried to install CM10 Alpha 4 with no success. I don´t know if it is some trouble with my modem (I´m from Argentina), or what, but I tried 4 times to install it and couldn´t make it work fine.
Now I´m on CM9 Alpha 14, with Alpha´s 11 Kernel.
I like it, but I find it a little bit laggy.
Is this just a characteristic from ICS in our phone?
Any other Kernel to recommend?
Now that I´ve tried ICS and JB, I can say that a big difference I find is the way some shortcuts work.
For example, when you pull down the notifications menu, you can access the setting from there, and in JB, you can go to alarms or calendar.
Also I like the new recent apps.
What has to do with the design, I find ICS and JB really pretty. Spaces between things in menus, and other stuff look very well.

Defntly for daily usage i strongly recommend GB over ics/jb.. The main issue with later 2 os is battery. I m nt getting even half day with moderate usage..(at present i m using REMICS 1.7) bt still m using it bcs it is more user friendly, support more apps finally, atleast to my frnds i can say "i m running more advanced os than u"
Some user have good battery life with jelly bean (2 days) !!!

For me, I use Jb instead of Gb because:
-Video call with Gtalk. No Gtalk vid call on Gb.
-Beautiful UI. The spaces, the consistency of usage of colours, the fresh new look of android.
-Built in Data Monitor. I can track my data usage and warning if almost reach limit.
-Expandable volume control(we can set media volume, ring volume and alarm volume just by pressing the button)
-Great keyboard.
-more apps supported.(apex launcher, some games, Chrome, stuff)
-settings button accessible in notification
-Swipeable notification (I like this because i can keep my text message to be read later while deleting other notification)
-Quick reply text messages using button on notification area without opening the messaging app.
-Google Now cards. It shows stuff without having to search for it.
-Very organized system settings.
-Different Widget displayed.(eg. Google+ widget in GB is a text bar to post new statuses. In JB, it shows people from our circle's posts.)
-Fast stock browser. (Updated html support)
-Can save web page for offline reading.
-can place shortcuts on lockscreen.
-apps on the market had given guidelines on the app layout.(not making apps that looks like iPhones and Windows phone apps)
-No pre-installed bloatwares.
-Can show to s2 users that I already have JB while they still ICS
Benefits of Gb over Jb(at this time):
-Tethering (tethering in cm10 is not yet possible)
-Have FM Radio in stock rom. Good to hear free music when bored.
-Have UMTS Video Call in stock rom. Can Video call using carrier charges(its the same price as voice call in my country. Very good to have)
-Can create folders INSIDE the app drawer.(value packs only)
-Good battery usage.
I would prefer JB more because I could use my phone more effectively. About the lag, I used the performance tweak and the Project Butter enchanter mods by Top Droid and the lag is gone!

amifiq which rom are you using & how good is the battery backup?
Im using cm10a3. Usually it last like a day if i use it like sms, whatsapp, calls. But if you want good battry life, use gb. Cm10 isnt stable yet so have not as good battery as stock.

As rightly pointed out by amifiq in earlier post
My views will be similar to what he said.
But to be frank Battery lasts only for a day at the most.
leaving it I would rather prefer the JB instead of GB.
Above all it is the firmware created by our devs.
That is more important to go for JB.
My SL is currently at -->
Jelly Bam v.4.0
SIRI KERNEL rc2
Performance Tweaks - Version 1.4.1
issues found as below ,
1.whatsapp
-heavy lag at times while switching from other apps (5sec delay)
-hang / or black screen when using camera , have to remove battery and reboot
- force close
2. MX video player
- phone reboot after watching 25 mins
3. copying files in debugging mode connected to pc
- become slower in day 2 and 3
attached is the catlog when i experience reboot while on MX player
sorry i have to put it here because my post is still less than 10
