OK, so first I'd like to say I'm coming from an HTC Vivid. On said device I would long-press the search key to launch voice command to send a text, perform a web search, or get navigation directions. It was awesomely easy and convenient.
How do I perform the function now that I have a One X with no search button?
Thanks!
If you have the search widget on your homescreen you can just hit the mic icon.

That widget does not function the same. It asks me to speak again if I say something like, "Send txt to Ryan Suchandsuch" instead of displaying the pop-up text message window.

Seeing as how I mentioned it worked on my other phone, me mumbling wouldn't be the issue here (and most definitely is not). The voice command function refuses to do anything other than open the browser with a search phrase entered containing what I had spoken.

Have you done anything to your phone? Any mods? It is literally the exact same function as holding down the search key so it should work. I use it all the time and never have any issues whatsoever, including using it to send texts.
-I have rooted the stock ROM
-I have remapped the multitasking key to be a menu key
That's all.
Voice search is voice search
It brought up the text pop up for me when I tried it.
Is there any way to bring up that pop up while in an app? I think it'd be pretty useful.
That would mean multitasking.... so no.

I use Apex Launcher and I set it to have the "static" Search Bar at the top of my home-screens and when I press the "mic" I can send texts, navigate, etc. from there.

Say "Send text to [NAME]" then do a brief pause, then dictate the text message. That brief pause is key.

I don't think the way you say it is the issue as the current version is pretty forgiving. I had the same pro lem back in April-ish and many others did too. An update was release where the call or text keyword actually ended up

Anyway, make sure that your voice search application is up to date. It seemed to fix it for me.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.voicesearch
Also, when the voice search application is actively receiving input, check the gear icon in the upper right. If you make your recognition personal (at the expense of privacy) recognition is much better.

yeah this way definitely works the best, plus there's no need for a pause then
I am on voice search 3.0.1 if I look in the apps section. The play store doesn't allow me to update or un install so I must be current.
I tried both methods of voice commands with and without "message" and with adequate pause.
Both do jot work. Are you guys on stock rom or custom?

When you put it in "InCar" mode you can say "Hey Vlingo" to wake it up and use voice commands.
FYI, this works on the VZW with the Incredible with no problem..

Also, it works! The new Google program is about 1/10 in getting what I say right.
Vlingo is (so far) about 5/5. I like that if it doesn't find what you're saying locally, it does a (very fast) internet search.

Works great on the dinc. I appreciate the share!
thank you so much for sharing this app with the community. I have been fooling around with it for half an hour or so and it does some pretty awesome things. LOVE the in-car feature, completely hands-free and works perfectly, even reads and writes text messages for me. "hey vlingo"
Edit: Forgot to add, very accurate, even with names
Wow, the incar mode is really REALLY good. Anybody know how to have it differentiate between a contacts home and cell when sending a text message?
Say call blah blah mobile. That should work.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Google's voice search sucked at recognizing what I was saying for the first week or so, but then it got a lot better. I'm wondering if it learns your voice or something. Vlingo, on the other hand, worked well on day one. However, while it does a good job of recognizing what I am saying, it doesn't always give me the results I wanted. For instance, movie times never come up even though that's one of the examples the app shows, and it displays my exact phrase correctly (movie times near #####). It just says "No answer found". And I've also had trouble getting it to dial the right phone number for a contact. It's like it ignores when I say "mobile."
I'm having the same problem. It ignores when I say "mobile" after the contacts name. My g/f is getting irritated with the text to landline messages that repeat "test" lol
Is it necessary to install the standard Vlingo app before installing the incar pack?
I´ve been trying to download the installer but i still cant find it, it´s not in the market either.
It would be much if I ask to share the installer?

anyway to successfully have this running in the background with the in-car? Currently it seems that the program has to be on main screen for me to say "Hey Vlingo" and it wakes...
Plus..too bad I cant say Jarvis to have it wake up
Instead of 'mobile' try saying 'cell'.

Right now the best way is to make two contacts for the person and label one cell and one home after the name. Best workaround at the moment.

It would be nice if you could ask it to use your GV # by default as well.

Funny... I updated the out of the box voice-search with what was available on the Android market from Google. It seems to work fine for me.
I hold down the Search key until it pops up, speak, receive bacon.
It seems to usually work fine with "Navigate To..." commands and "Send Text to ..." commands. Also, just speaking stuff to search seems to work. I have never gotten the "Play..." or some of the other commands to work properly.

Yeah, for some reason, a lot of the commands are not enabled for "alternate" languages. Set to US English or General/Generic English in the system language settings, and then it should hopefully work. If you don't want to do it for the System language, then you can also do the following:
Main Screen (Home)->Menu button->"Settings"->"Voice Input & Output"->"Voice Recognizer Settings"->"Language"->set it to "English (US)".
This should make the accuracy a tiny bit less due to non-American accent (particularly if you have a heavy accent comparatively), but it enables a lot more of the command usages.

I opened this thread because I did not find any relevant information about google now in the other threads.
I realized that Google Now in Nexus S does not have the same answers with cards, as in the Galaxy Nexus.
Do you know why? have you noticed other differences?
Make sure you have "Search on Google.com" enabled in Google now ->Settings -> Privacy and Accounts, since the Knowledge graph which powers it is more or less limited to Google.com at the moment.
My problem with Google Now is limited to voice search. Besides the ocassional slow start up, it seems the graphics/UI/animation have trouble keeping up with the audio (chime, audio input, audio output), which hurts when it activates a voice action but you can't see the card to check if it's right or not. Does everybody else get this?
I already have google.com enable but I was never able to get any card.
I tried several examples that work with GNexus
Did you get a card using voice search?
In my Nexus S I also noticed the slow start up.
Does anyone know if it's possible to make a home screen shortcut to google now? I use ADW EX for a launcher and it doesn't have the option yet in the Swipe Up setting to launch google now, but if there's a way to make a shortcut, you can set swipe up to launch an app or shortcut.
Also, I can't seem to setup the sports cards. I follow Formula 1 in the summer, but also NBA summer leagues, but I can't setup the sports cards to give me any information at all on these things.

No need, in Jelly Bean the Search button is permanently mapped to Google now system wide (you can't use it for app specific search anymore). If you still want a shortcut, just make a shortcut to the Google app. Google app = Google now.
So...egg on my face. Hit the "search" capacitive button and it went straight to google now. Embarrassed.

Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788719
Enables you to use the search button and make a typing search instead of voice search, but the best part is the microphone in the widget still works if you want.
So click the search button brings typing even if voice is activated. 2 in 1

Voice Dialer is messed up
I originally posted this in the Apps forum; but it is probably more appropriate here:
I installed Google Now and the search works fine. However, when I initiate the voice dialer via my BT headset, I hear very fast, unintelligible gibberish. When I say "Call Bill Johnson" it returns totally inaccurate results and the voice is at 4X speed. S Voice, while somewhat inaccurate, worked 80-90% of the time via BT.
Does anyone else who has done this on their S3 have a working BT initiated voice dialer?
Are you having issues with having GN send text to contacts or sending "note to self"? I am having issue with both. I tried to do the work around using Calendar as a contact and then having GN send a sms to it so that it will post but most of the time it ends up doing a google search on "text calendar....ect". "note to self..." gives me a black screen and then an FC shortly after. I'm using the M6 zip file.

I sending a text message is hit or miss i guess, however i never got it to actually do it for me automatically. if i say "text mike hey whats up" it will pull up mike (sometimes/not consistently) and have my message "hey whats up" ready for sending but i have to actually go again and finalize the send. It's not like with S voice or Vlingo where it will send it for you if there is high confidence or if you tell it to send. I guess we'll just have to wait until proper version of Jellybean come out for our phones (GS3 VZW in my case). Till then we'll just have to deal with not so perfect Google Now.

Should just be the Google search one, if you haven't already tried that one. also, check the original threat I posted i belive they have an "uninstall" option? that would be the only other option i can think of. I don't use voice dial. sorry.
So to install this, you just need to download the zip file and flash in recovery? I read through the other link and its seems confusing. I'm not sure if I need 6 or 7. And the warning stated if I don't know what one I need I shouldn't be attempting it. So I'm nervous.
Do the mikey7 version. To get offline and online dload the biggest file. On an s3 you should be Ok doing the big file. Just download put on root of your sd card and on recovery flash the zip file. I've been using it but I don't use the cards to save battery. I just use the voice search. It's much better than s voice or the voice search of ics. Check on howbibused home2shortcut to assign it to the home button by clicking my name to see my posts. You will enjoy it.

Google Keep is amazing. Quick, easy, simple, and it works. Easy to set reminders too.
I already use Google keep. However, lg quick memo works differently than that. It allows you to write over your background. For example, if I get a call from a number I don't know, I would go to call history, enter quick memo to write the number on the screen. Then tap a button which allows me to browse the phone while that number stays on the screen so I can search that number without trying to remember it or write it on paper. Its all right in front of you. Obviously there is more uses for it than that.
I still have my rooted lg optimus g so I can pull the all from there. Not sure if that will work though.
