One of the major disappointments I had when I first got this phone was discovering that the OS doesn't come with a voice dialer. So I started trying the various voice dial apps on the market, and none worked well. After much searching, I found a ICS compatible version of the standard voice dial application. So I'm going to attach it here for those of you that want to have this functionality.
I installed it via the standard app installer, then I went into titanium backup and converted it into a system app. I'm sure there's a more direct method, but this worked for me.
Hope this works for everyone, but so far it's worked perfectly for me!

you are a lifesaver. i was looking all over for this, as I'm running a custom rom and it didn't include this as well. and you know how the google one requires a data connection and I don't have a data plan.
so thanks a bunch!! and it works great.
btw, what does making it a system app do?
The voice dialer didn't work for me initially, but did start working after I converted it into a system app. That's @ll the explanation I can give you.

yeah you're right, it doesn't work when I actually want to dial (gives message "unfortunately, voice dialer has stopped" - it brings up a list of names ok though. can you explain how you converted it to a system app? I tried but couldn't figure it out. thanks!

thank you sir, just what i have been searching for in vain...until now:good:
!
I never found the voice dialer to work well if you have a lisp or an accent. luckily google voice will dial/text/email/gps/map and search for you and it adapts to your voice overtime( as long as that has been checked in the setting).
Thanks...hope it wks 4 me:good:

I've got a workaround going through the browser but something for the app would be nice.

What's the problem? I installed GV fine on my phone, and am using it for voicemail.
that's pretty interesting, I didn't realize mine was broke untill you said something.... interesting... hmm

My GV works perfect on Gumbo 2.1
If I need to dial out to somewhere it matters I gotta go through the web browser. Just like I had to on my blackberry.
it probally has something to do with the dialer in fresh, maybe replaceing that with an aosp dialer or cyanogen modded one would work.

How would I pull that out of the rom?
pull and replace the following
\system\app\phone.apk
\system\app\phone.odex
I think that's it... I'm not a rom cooker, so would need confirmation, there's probably other dependencies... my untrained jedi guestimate

It looks like Fresh de-odexed all the apk's so... none of the apps currently use the .odex. I think that causes problems when you try and push a file that is built to use both .apk and .odex. That's my guess. I was trying to push Teeter, but it won't work (I think) for this reason.
I'm having the same problems! GV decides if it's in the right mood or not to make outgoing calls. Sometimes it works, other times it's just nonstop insta-fails. Has anyone pegged down what this issue is?
Also, the SMS delay is much more severe. I was using double SMS workaround (SMS to GV# and Sprint# to force GV to refresh) with fresh 1.1, but that doesn't seem to be working now with 2.0. I'm updating to 2.0b, but I doubt that will quell these issues.
I'd really appreciate if anyone has any ideas on this one. Thanks!
I haven't gotten it to work once. Add this to the list of problems I have had with every Rom with the word fresh in it.

In my case, the GV issue is more severe since it's costing me $$. I use Google Voice to call family in Canada. Using GV, calls are free. I just checked my Sprint minutes usage and turns out that the last call I made was billed via Sprint. Sucks! 13 minutes, $6.37. This really does need to get figured out!
Measter, how are you making calls via the browser? When I try to access the Google Voice site, it sees that I'm on an Android device and tells me to download the app from the Market.

suckage
I just checked this out and it doesn't work for me on Fresh 2.0b. I was running Darch's rom before and I didn't notice if it was working or not, no one I called complained that I was doing it from the wrong number (I use GV as my primary number) but that doesn't mean it was working because I only used it for a day or so.
Luckily it's hopefully only going to be a short wait for an offical 2.1, then shortly after that we'll have a nice new flipz rom.
I just got the OTA for my Sensation and guess what? Voice dial now works on my bluetooth headset without visual confirmation or the need for Choicedialer, works like a champ just like on my G2x.
Now i had the Voicedialer APK installed prior to the update so im not sure if the APK was included with the update or not, let me know if it isnt and ill upload the APK. but it works!
Could you post the apk you are using please.
Please please please post the APK for voice dialer. For this reason alone I was contemplating going back to stock.

For some reason, I don't have the Voice Dialer app. I am currently using ARHD 3.0. Could that be the problem?
This maybe was discussed somewhere else, but I didn't see a thread on it so figured I'd start one.
I've installed Google Now on my rig running full stock (rooted) rom and it's running fine. I did get some network error messages at first, but I assumed it was a result of the permission requests it was tossing at me. Once I allowed the permissions, things seemed to work just fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045
FYI - Just read that to get the full benefit of google now you must have web history and location history enabled. It'll work without it, but won't provide its full benefit without it.
That said, I guess I won't really be using it much. A choice y'all will have to make. Here's the link:

Is voice working for you and did it break svoice when u double tap home? Thanks for the info
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Voice did not work for me.
Double tap of home gave you the option to choose s voice or search. I defaulted to search and when I double clicked home nothing happened.
I kept getting network errors even though I have both location and search history enabled. I could get weather and Olympic results quickly but when I searched for say "galaxy S3 news" it would sit there loading. I reverted back to stock search.
How to revert: uninstall velvet. Rename the apk for Google quick search. No reboot required.
My phone is verizon stock rooted with noxious ninjas script.
Voice didn't work for me either. One note: don't "install" velvet.apk, push it to system/app instead.
Also, for some reason it kept telling me units in SI instead of US. I reverted because I like voice search. Didn't try disabling the S Voice stuff which I saw may help.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
There are several things that don't work for me.
As previously mentioned, voice searching is broken.
On my xoom the Google now app displays card such as weather, traffic, and sports scores when I open it without doing any searches. This function does not work.
Also, I get notifications from Google now on the xoom. The app is integrated in the os. None of this works on the s3.
Pretty much all you will get is a replacement of the current search app that will display cards for some results using text input only. It is not worth it to switch right now. If you are curious about how Google now works, just search for demo videos.

it's now fully functional (including voice). there's another post floating around with instructions.
thanks for sharing this! everything works fine!
Can someone point me in the direction of the fully working version? I installed yesterday and there were a bunch of problems.
Here's the "fully" working version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29756226&postcount=2856
I say "fully" because at least for me, nothing relating to the calendar works. Doesn't see my existing appointments, can't add new ones. Voice search works fine.
So I got it installed on my Verizon S3.
I don't see a Now app in my drawer but do get it when I press the home screen mic button and can voice search and all of that works well. Set an alarm etc.
I don't see any cards though and I don't have google now settings in the google search app to change from metric etc. I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 online/offline. I didn't install anything else. Did I miss something?
Also double clicking the home button now brings up the voice dialer, how can that be changed?
Thanks in advance!

Cool, thanks. I am concerned that I don't get the settings to change from metric in the search app too.
I realize though I should be patient and wait for google to "award" me cards and then I might get the weather settings I am looking for.
Voice Dialer is messed up
I installed Google Now and the search works fine. However, when I initiate the voice dialer via my BT headset, I hear very fast, unintelligible gibberish. When I say "Call Bill Johnson" it returns totally inaccurate results and the voice is at 4X speed. S Voice, while somewhat inaccurate, worked 80-90% of the time via BT.
Does anyone else who has done this on their S3 have a working BT initiated voice dialer?
Where are my cards!

So I guess it's been 4 or 5 days since I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 and I still don't have any cards. I have been using Now daily to search for weather updates and sports scores from my main teams and no cards every show up when I open the app from the blue google icon. I have never seen anything in the app actually say Google Now, I just get the red mic to ask the question.
Did I miss something or maybe have a bad install? Any suggestions to try?

Figured my problem out. It was because I have a google apps (for business) account. I had to enable at settled in my domain management to permit google now for my users (aka me).
I then cleared the Google Search Apps data and cashe and reopened it and got the welcome to Google Now setup screen.

It depends on which recovery your using if it acts right with it...if you flash it and it dont show up then you have to manually install it which the instructions on how to do so is in that OP
Might be a questioned already answered. I just got my s3 a few days ago, but does google navigation work with google now. I installed the m7 online/offline version but it just sits there. Voice search, cards, everything else works but turn by turn navigation.:cyclops:

Are you having issues with having GN send text to contacts or sending "note to self"? I am having issue with both. I tried to do the work around using Calendar as a contact and then having GN send a sms to it so that it will post but most of the time it ends up doing a google search on "text calendar....ect". "note to self..." gives me a black screen and then an FC shortly after. I'm using the M6 zip file.

I sending a text message is hit or miss i guess, however i never got it to actually do it for me automatically. if i say "text mike hey whats up" it will pull up mike (sometimes/not consistently) and have my message "hey whats up" ready for sending but i have to actually go again and finalize the send. It's not like with S voice or Vlingo where it will send it for you if there is high confidence or if you tell it to send. I guess we'll just have to wait until proper version of Jellybean come out for our phones (GS3 VZW in my case). Till then we'll just have to deal with not so perfect Google Now.

Should be able to go into the applications and clear the cache for Google search/voice - so when you double click home it will ask which you want to use? not 100% sure, but usually that's how you reset options like that.

Should just be the Google search one, if you haven't already tried that one. also, check the original threat I posted i belive they have an "uninstall" option? that would be the only other option i can think of. I don't use voice dial. sorry.
So to install this, you just need to download the zip file and flash in recovery? I read through the other link and its seems confusing. I'm not sure if I need 6 or 7. And the warning stated if I don't know what one I need I shouldn't be attempting it. So I'm nervous.
Do the mikey7 version. To get offline and online dload the biggest file. On an s3 you should be Ok doing the big file. Just download put on root of your sd card and on recovery flash the zip file. I've been using it but I don't use the cards to save battery. I just use the voice search. It's much better than s voice or the voice search of ics. Check on howbibused home2shortcut to assign it to the home button by clicking my name to see my posts. You will enjoy it.

From what I understand, Samsung has found out about the leak and shutdown the servers. If you install it, you will just get network error. We are hoping that once most carriers start to officialy release the S4 that it will start working again.Until then, I dont think there is really anything else that can be done to get it working.
I'm using the s4 svoice just fine no errors.

All personal preference i suspect. You may hate it and others may love it. Neither position is right or wrong.
Good point!
Could it be possible that those who thought the S4 S-Voice wasn't working had it confused with the new S4 S-Translate? I know there were issues with that one connecting when it was pulled from the system dump.
In any case, I've been using the new S-Voice for a while now... The driving mode is pretty cool, and I still like the "humerous" responses it gives (personality if you will). The voice has got to be changed though, it's murder on the ears.

No offense, but considering S voice is a laggy resource hogging mess, why want it? Must folks seem to turn it off as soon as they find out how

yea...i find google voice search(goolge now) better...but each has its own features...and...annoyances....and both are far from perfect....
I remember having nuance voice commands on my org Galaxy S, couldn't do advanced things that s voice can do, but it detected my commands perfectly every-time.

it is NOT a zip file you flash. just unpack it, put it in a folder on your sd card and run the apk like any other program. it is how i install it on my phone running beans v15.

it seems to work just fine for me but i admittedly don't use it very much. once in a while. but it does go in to driving mode and responds to commands. for me anyway.

my bad...cleared cache and a reboot fixed it....
still prefer google search though...manged to find instructions on how to switch the double tap button to launch google voice search instead of S voice...
now, if i can only figure out how to set google as the default for when Bluetooth is used...s voice still dominates that..but switching the speech recognizer to googles instead of Samsung helped S voice perform better.
