Today, it seems that an S Voice APK was flying around on the interwebs. However, it looks like you have to go through a lot to actually get it to work. First, you’re going to need a Root Explorer.
There’s a few free ones out there, and one that costs $1.99. Just make sure it’s a Root Explorer. Then, you’re going to need to download the APK, mount it to R/O (just tap on Mount R/W and it’ll switch it), copy and paste it into system/app (through Root Explorer). Long press the S-Voice.apk and press permissions.

You’re going to need to change the permissions. They’re going to need to be: r-w, r, r. Then reboot. After that, go into /system/app using Root Explorer. Install it like you would install a regular app and then ta-da, there’s your S-Voice. If your S Voice app isn’t in /system/app, then just re-do it. Mine wasn’t there, so instead of rebooting, I just installed the app and it works fine now.
I’ve heard not to change any default settings, since it will then crash the app. Keep in mind that you’re probably going to need ICS for this to work, and your phone will need to be rooted. Also, the “Wake Up Galaxy!” command will probably not work. Try it if you want, but you’ll just be talking to a wall.
Go here for the download file!
gee the looks remarkably not dissimilar to Siri. i suppose samsungs' days of incurring the wrath of Apple are not quite yet over
What is the R/O and R/W? I'm stuck, I've tried just installing the apk but I only get 'Network error' when using it.
i can't copy the apk to the system folder, tryed with a lot of managers and nothing. installed without permissions, worked well first times and later start to crash. galaxy s (1)
When you say r-w. r r, what exactly do you mean by that?

this is permissions, you can open them by long press on the app, and then you chose r-read w-write....
Is anyone getting "Network Error" when trying to use it?
I installed it as a normal app and it worked on my Galaxy Nexus without root.
Does anyone know if this works with an Irish or Scottish accent? Probably not, I know but we can hope....

Paste it in System/App folder.
Followed the instruction to the letter, it installs fine and I can run it, but unfortunately after I say "hi galaxy" and then command it an action, it gets stuck searching... sometimes it times out, sometimes it craches... but it never does what it's supposed to do... might need a bit of working on to integrate it to other phones, but all in all this is a good starting point! Thanks for sharing the apk!
i can install it, but it does not work (in german).

Is there anyway to unlock the app rather then having to unlock/root/edit your phone and it's settings?

It may take a minutes for the media to show up to select, to be on the safe side you can always just reboot your phone. Either way enjoy!

C'mon man, using the root explorer is how I was able to find the file. I'm sure you read where I said "I can NOT nav to it when connected to the PC" this would have indicated I found the file with the root explorer.
root explorer will not allow rename, delete of any alteration.
If someone has any suggestions how to get rid of this file Please let me know

dased14 was referring to the android app root explorer...search market. It has nothing to do with deleting something over USB. The app will let you move, rename, or delete files from system as long as you have root access and enable the r/w setting.
There are certainly many other file explorers that can do this if you prefer another. Many of them at least have an option to enable root access.

Yes yes yes I am using got d s file explorer now that is how I found the file,
The point is, when connected via usb I cannot see the file.
I can we see the file when using the android file explorer.
However the file explorer does not allow renaming or any other alterations and I don't know why nor do I care, I only want to get rid of the bastard Goblin
I think you have been given the instructions.. but not reading...
If you can't change the the r/o to r/w of the directory you are in.. using Root explorer.. on your phone.. to delete this file..
Then you don't have root access and you are screwed as you don't own/control what's on your phone..

If you are on a custom ROM where the signature of the gmail app is different, then you will have to do the following first:
adb remount
adb shell mv /system/app/Gmail.apk /system/app/Gmail.apk.bak
adb uninstall com.google.android.gm
Note: the uninstall command may work on its own, but the above is what I did in order
thanks I was wondering what that was all about.

But then it installed nicely.

ell guy, I am having a bit trouble enabling push e-mail, any ideas?
It jus doesnt push my email no matter what, an -9 mail works perfectly...
Please help?
Gmail pushes, email doesn't, unless you use Exchange/ActiveSync
I truly dislike the fact that the copy and past function in Gmail is so abysmal. It seems you can only select and copy only whats showing on the screen at the time .. So if you wanted to copy a entire message and you try and do that ..
select .. more .... copy text .. u put ur finger down and start to higlight then use the trackball to scroll while highlighting it only highlights whats showing on the screen and does not retain what was highlighted before ..
So basically to copy a large email you have to do it in sections ..
Talk about tedious .. what happened to the the good ol select all function
This again is in reference to copy and paste in the gmail app from your phone
so i unistalled gmail via titanium... tried to adb... tried the .rar and extacted the .apk and i have nothing still. keeps failing to install. now i have no email unless i nandroid.
when i fastboot my commands are to cd\ c:\superboot then fastboot-windows devices...then serial # is recognized. i tried the commands and i get incorrect errors and what not. Am i doing that right? Or do i need to do it a diff way. Im not too familiar with adb.
EDIT: I got it to work...but what was i doing wrong via adb. I would like to know and get more familiar
I'm a bit confused at to what you were trying to do, you mention ADB but list fastboot commands. They're two seperate programs, which were you using exactly?
Fastboot will never be able to push an app, that's ADB's job. Fastboot is for flashing .img files.
this is where my inexperience comes into play. guess i know less about adb then i thought.
Ah but now you know (since you said you got there in the end), gotta start somewhere.
push via gtalk?
The XDA article that links to this thread says that there is no longer to syn inboxes because the new gmail app talks through gtalk...is this something done in the background or do we have to enable it and if so how?

mount -o remount,rw /system
cd /system/app

I assume you are rooted? You need ROOT COMMANDER to do that... set the ROOT to READ/WRITE and then you can erase the old app.
For me, I didnt have to do that, the new one installed over the old one. Im using SPRINT LOVERS ROM

How to sideload for samsung captivate?
1. Download Terminal Emulator from android market (or any terminal).
2. Go to this post on your samsung captivate.
3. Copy this Below
su cd /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings
sqlite3 settings.db
update secure set value = "1" where name = "install_non_market_apps";
.quit
reboot
4. Your phone will reboot and you can sideload. try to download an app from pandaapp.com.
5. Success!!!!!!!!!! Made very easy compared to using Android SDK.

Hope You Luck!

It's explained Tip: Enable Non Market App Installs on the Samsung Captivate]here[/url, I used a little variation on that method:
Can I suggest an even easier way of editing and manipulating the settings.db file? I used a combination of Root Explorer, SQLite Editor and Dropbox, modified from this link. You zip and copy settings.db from your Captivate to Dropbox, then you can edit it in Firefox, zip it, copy it back, and manipulate it from there - or I found I could copy the file to another folder I created (modified market), edit the file in there with SQLite, save the file and then copy it back to the original folder following their directions. The one thing you have to be careful of is making sure you're mounted R/W instead of R/O in Root Explorer or you'll get errors, something like 'permission denied'.
The Sideload Wonder Machine is nice, but I'm not always at my computer when I find something I want to try, this method made sideloading totally contained on the Captivate. Works a charm

What are you using, Root Explorer? You have to click the r/w at the top of the screen to enable writing. If it's r/o, that means read only.

While the process described here isn't technically sideloading, it is enabling installation of non-market applications without being attached to a computer, a.k.a. De-crippling . I have already simplified this process into one click, with no need for running any console commands or downloading the android SDK. Check out One Click De-Cripple for Captivate here.
BTW, your phone will need to be rooted before this process will be successful.

Having to be rooted is why I went wit the method I posted above - because at the time I wasn't ready to root. What that method did do is force me to learn a bit about Android file structure and how to 'fiddle around' with the innards of the system. Eventually, of course, I got brave, rooted, and it's been all customizing from then on.
Of course, once you've rooted and gone to a custom ROM you never have to worry about all this again

Sure, but then I have to be at my computer to load anything. I far prefer what I did, so it's just plain done. Plus I don't want the constant reminder that AT&T has crippled my phone - a phone I'm paying way too much for monthly.

Functions:
File Actions
Copy Files
Delete Files
Push Files from PC
Pull Files to PC
Create Directories
Edit File Properties (Permissions, etc)
Select Multiple Files
Sign Files
Read Device Info
Open a ADB Shell console
Read logcat
Virtual Input (havent tried it)

Maybe because you are runing jb mr1 4.2.2
For all those that get "Root Access : NO" on rooted phone, it's because adbd is running in "secure" mode.
Try adbd Insecure v1.30. It worked for me:

I am successful in connecting the device , but I can't access the path data/data . When I click on data/ it doesn't displays anything.I require it for development purpose, so has to access the database file of the apps
And one more, can I backup apps along with data like Titanium backup
