[Q] Silent Inspire - HTC Inspire 4G

Hello, I'm looking for a little advice.
First: the problem - phone will not make any sounds what so ever...nothing. the phone is rooted and running wcx-illuminatti (no apps or anything downloaded the day before the issues), but has been for about 2 months. phone woke me up with its morning alarm, then it rang about 20 mins later so i answered the phone and...nothing dead silent.
-speaker is silent for ringer/notifications/media player/youtube vids
-headphones don't get any sound either
-other person can't hear me talking
everything else works fine? just no speaker sounds or mic, wetness indicators still pure white
Second: what sould i do - I've had the phone for 13 months so its out of the manu warranty. do I take it to att and see what they say? call htc and explain the issue? I have tried flashing different roms to fix it...wont work, i never did change the radio. Should i return to unrooted stock before i contact htc or att?
thanks for the suggestions guys!
Luckily I still have my blackjack 2 and moto razr to use while i figure this out...

Without indicating which ROMs you tried we have no way of knowing. Each phone (even the same model) can have its quirks. I would suggest trying the stock rom just to ensure it is an actual hardware issue. If the stock rom does not fix it then I think you are out of luck for a free repair or replacement. If you have insurance it will help lower the cost of a replacement. Otherwise, you will most likely not have any other avenues other than to buy a phone outright. I have heard of a few cases where AT&T corporate store managers can work their "magic" and somehow set it up to get you a phone at a contract price (but usually is higher cost than normal contract renewal and you would most likely have to renew your contract). Gook luck with everything. Let us know if it was definitely hardware related or not.

Well this happened friday morning...I woke up and tried flashing an old nandroid of leedroid with no success
then tried leaving it in a bag of rice since the night before someone spilled on top of the pocket i had the phone in...i had immediately removed it, wiped it off and put in my other pocket and i thought it didnt get too wet or anything
so after the quick nandroid i powered it down and left it in a bag of rice overnight...then after reading your response tried flashing stock...seems to work great
I prefer sense 3.5 like in wcx so i tried to reflash from sd card and again sound is gone...could the file on my sd be corrupt or does my phone just not want the 1.3 ghz (or whatever) overclock any more?

Questions

So I got my XT720 a few days ago and am loving it. Two things though:
1) I've had to do a quick reset (take out battery) about 4-5 times in the same amount of days. What happens is sometimes the screen will go blank (or when I press the on button all that will happen is the 4 buttons at bottom of phone will light up). Screen/phone becomes unresponsive and only way to get back to normal is to take out battery. I'm pretty sure that every time this has happened has been right (or shortly) after me downloading something on my phone (i.e. putting on a new wallpaper, or a song). Anyone have this happen to them?
2) I don't want to root or put on Dexter's ROM just yet. The reason for this is because a) I just got my phone and I don't want to void the warranty until I know everything works with no issues b) I'd rather wait for the complete/fully polished version of the ROM - I'm in no hurry right now, this phone is a big big upgrade from my previous phone even without 2.2.
Anyways, the point is, I'm pretty sure my phone isn't running with the 720MHz update right now and is running at 550. I want to put on that update to make my phone faster while I wait to root. However, whenever I go to - about phone - check for system updates - and click on that, it always tells me "Server unavailable. Try again later.". Been trying for the past few days and no luck. How can I get the 720MHz update (without rooting - at this point)?
Thanks
If the screen doesn't come on when you turn on the phone, you may have a defective one. My first XT720 was a dud right out of the box. I had to take it back to the Cincinnati Bell store and get it exchanged. I've heard of other people having similar experiences with the phone not turning on. Take it back. If they give you any crap about it, just tell them that the Motorola tech from their forums told you to take it back. This adds a bit of validity to the problem and may make it an easier transaction.
Nah, it works fine for the most part. Turns on and off and runs just fine normally. But my issue is I've just had it basically freeze up 4-5 times in the past week (noticing a possible connection to me downloading things).
I would think your phone is running at 720mhz. I believe the European / Asian versions were originally 550mhz & had an ota udate to the 720 level. You could download Android System Info or Elixer to check it out though.
I would also agree with reverendkjr, it the phone is acting funky take it back & get a replacement.
The XT720 from Wind is 720mhz with stock firmware, the only 550mhz was Korean version AFAIK, maybe some Euro versions.
As for the screen, you may want to try doing a factory reset on your phone. If it persists after that take it back to Wind for a replacement, had my wife's XT720 replaced due to a microphone problem.

Oh? I figured it might be at 550 since going back to homescreen - it reloads pretty often (thought 720 wouldn't do that), though it does run snappy enough in all other areas.

Be a bit of a pain to factory reset at this point. The problem isn't terribly disruptive at this point. Doesn't happen often enough to really bother me and restarting is quick. If it does continue and become frustrating I may consider factory reset. I just was wondering if anyone else experienced this.
WIND would give me a replacement at any time (within the year) if I told them about this issue? (Kind of hard to prove since it happens at it's own whim. Don't want to seek a replacement just yet anyways - not unless it continues and is an annoyance)
Just put a call into support so they have a record of the problems, explain to them you cant reproduce the problem, but it is a brand new phone and should not be doing this regardless.
They will suggest the reset to see if the issue persists, but you can decline at this time and at least get the issue logged so you have a better chance of replacement in the future.
Keep in mind though, within 14 days they will replace with a new phone, beyond that you may get a used one.
I can't imagine just ignoring a problem with a new phone like that. Especially since you have the ability to have it replaced for free.
Heck, I took a phone back once because it had ONE dead pixel on the screen. When the girl looked at me and said "Really?" I said "Hell yes, I just bought this damn thing and I want it to be PERFECT!"
you need to setup the APN to connect to 3G to get your 720 upgrade from OTA (if purchased unlocked Euro or Asia models)
if it's a Wind XT720 it should already be on 720

Yeah, I suppose that's true. If it happens again I'll look into getting it replaced.
Thanks for the help guys.
my XT711 has done the "blank screen a few times also and I have to remove the battery to reset it. Very strange thing, but I have had the phone for only a few days so im gonna see what its gonna do first cause sending it back to china is a pain in th butt.

[Q] Random shutdowns!

Within around the last two weeks, my Inspire 4g has been randomly shutting itself off. Not rebooting, just plain and simple off just like i had done a battery pull. I have flashed a few ROM's, but the all seem to have no effect. It seems to do it very excessively whilst Im at my house where I dont have very good reception (Have to out it in a window to text or call) almost rendering it useless, but only occasionally while Im out and about with good signal. I'm not sure if this is due to an undervolted kernel that has happened to be on every ROM ive tried, or if its a radio issue. I would really appreciate any thoughts! Im currently running Virtuous Unity, and my radio is 12.39.60.19U_26.06.04.06_M
You definitely need to update your radio. Try using 26.10.04.03. This is the gingerbread radio made for our phones. I think vu has the ril for 26.13.04.19, but either will work. Also make sure there is no overclock set as some phones can't hang. The undervolting could cause issues but not likely. You would see a lot more people with the same issue and you don't.
Well I succesfully installed the radio you suggested, but it was to no avail. It is still having the same exact problem. It only rebooted twice today while I was in school and had strong signal. But now that Im home, its going mad again. Ive noticed that if its left plugged in it wont tend to shutoff nearly as much, like when i have signal. Im pretty puzzled, and dont want to have to purchase a new phone. Im thinking of reverting back to the stock unrooted ROM and seeing if I still experience any issues.
Maybe your battery is failing and not delivering the right voltage. It would make sense that when the phone is on battery and has to do a full work load that it just crashes. PCs do the same thing when their power supply is going bad. Either that or the board. You could unroot and then reroot wiping your sd card too just to rule out software.
I just unrooted and am now back to stock GB ROM, and im still getting reboots. I installed about 20 mins ago, and have had 3 shutoffs. It looks like I may be ordering a new battery soon and if all else fails, looks like ill get to have some target practice! lol I just cant figure why it isnt doing it so bad when I have a good signal. I spent a weekend with a friend, had service the whole time, and didnt experience a single shutoff! It has just gotten so terrible within the last few days, i cant even use my phone at my house anymore!
I also just noticed that when i try to take a picture or video, it crashes. It may be the battery, since the camera uses a lot of battery. Hopefully that's my issue!
I have usually found random shutdowns or restarts to be due to a memory leak or a bad battery. I haven't seen anyone posting about a memory leak. I would bet it is the battery.

Well Im about to go see if my local att store has a battery for it in stock. If they do, Ill see how it works and report back!
Mine was shutting off in my pocket at work. At the same time my sim card was going bad and would also randomly show the "restart phone or shutdown" msg. Finally replaced the sim and it stopped both problems so far.

I think my phone has done that once before, but only like twice at the most. If the battery isnt the problem, ill try the sim. Ill have my brother put his sim in my phone and see if he gets the same results before i order a battery since my local att store doesnt carry any batteries and Id like a solution asap.
Well it turns out it was my battery after all! Really glad it wasnt anything major! I popped my buddy's battery in my phone, and shes running like a dream!
Thank you for your posts. I have been having a similar problem and I thought it was something I had done. I will get an upgraded battery and try that. This was very helpful for me.
Tom
I thought for sure it was going to be something that would require a new phone! Im waiting on my new battery in the mail. It should arrive tomorrow, and ill be back in business!

Speaker Quit Working

Alright, so lately my Inspire has been going to the crapper. I rooted about 3 months ago using the Ace Hack Kit and it ran perfectly for 2 and a half months with the ROM it provides. The last few weeks it has been freezing running simple tasks and locking up. This in itself got very annoying, but now its gone over the top with my external speaker quit on me. I have no idea why it should do that, because I take care of the phone and use it regularly. Any help? I can live without the speaker if I have to, but I would really like to clean up the performance big time
Edit: And battery life is terrible, but I think that may just be time for a new battery anyway
If your speaker is busted, I'd recommend returning to stock and seeing if you can get it replaced under warranty

What he said. My external speaker blew too. Just happens in common electronics. Return to stock rom and if want to, then unroot it. Use the search to find the thread on how to unroot. Its very easy and possible. And call up HTC and see if your phone is still under warranty. They will give you a number and you will right that on your package. All you have to pay for is shipping. beats paying for a new phone. ATT wanted to charge me $150 for a new phone and I bought it for $99. You can see why I went with HTC. They didnt detect any software issues with rooting or anything like that. They replaced the speaker and sent it back within 2 weeks.
Buy a new speaker from ebay. You can pick one up last time I checked for $2. Takes about 5 minutes to replace. Will void your warranty though since you have to remove the back.
It came back on amazingly, but it was after several days and restarting it numerous times. It was threatening to not give me my pics back, but it all came back and is running pretty good now

[Q] HELP! My Nexus S has no sound

It's just as the title states my nexus s sound isn't working! There isn't any sound at all. Ringtone/notification/media.
When i receive a phone call my phone vibrates but it doesn't ring and when i pick up the phone i can't hear the person i'm speaking to and they can't hear me either.
Had my phone since mid-october,and the first time i encountered this issue is when i put ICS on my phone at the end of december and its been an on and off thing since then but it would last for like 2-3 mins, and it used to be fixed by putting my phone on vibrate, lock it, unlock, turn the volume back up and it would work but that doesn't work anymore i even reverted back to GB and it didn't solve anything
so WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX THIS ? also, do you think it's a hardware or software issue ?
forgot to add whenever i try to use google voice search it crashes
If you plug in headphones, can you hear music? Were you using custom ROM or Stock? Have you tried installing a custom ROM with a complete wipe (factory reset)?
I'd put my money on software. Full wipe (data/factory reset, format /system, format /boot) and then flash your preferred ROM. See if it works after this.

Yup, even with headphones there isn't any sound and it first occurred on a custom ICS rom and yesterday I flashed 2 more custom roms with a complete wipe still no progress

That's not good
You may be the very unlucky owner of a dead Wolfson chip in the phone. Is the phone still under 1 year old? Might be time to give samsung a ring and hope for the best. If you do decide to take it in, remember to flash a stock ROM and lock the bootloader.
Maybe someone else on the forum has an idea to help you though, but so far i'm afraid chances look slim. You could possibly try heating behind the battery a little with a hairdryer (not too much) and see if it would work afterward, it could just be a dry solder joint on the audio chip, but you'd still want it fixed.

*sigh* I feared that its a hardware issue and as far as warranty goes I bought it in 11/2011 and it was bought used so how much would it cost to get that fixed ? Also I restored my phone on a custom 2.3.6 from then rebooted my phone and the sound was working, then after a hour of inactivity, then I rebooted my phone and it started working and got greedy and flashed another rom then the sound was cut off again so should I have hope and try your method of drying ?
I have the same problem. Samsung Infuse 4g. I'm back to stock. Tried everything including GTG and Heimdall. (sigh) Sux. I hope u get urs working again, as I do mine. Saw another post where somebody dropped theirs and it starting working again. Better start praying... Good luck to u!
^^^^^^ i'm about to drop mine for an experiment lol
Hard to say how much. Might be easier to replace the whole board or just one chip, or just because it's too much trouble to find the problem. Also depends on shipping as you'd have to pay to send it to samsung, unless they have some kind of repair centre nearby where you can drop it off - and you'd likely be left without your phone for a couple weeks.
I'd be ringing samsung and asking all of this first. Afterward you may be able to get some quotes from a phone repairer if they can find the problem. These days it's often "throw it away and get a new one", and i'm afraid it's largely the same with phones despite what would be only minor problems/fixes.
OK, y'all. I've got news and info on this issue. First, i have the Samsung Infuse 4g. After trying everything possible short of throwing it into the river, I figured it was def hardware related. I, of course prayed & am convinced that is the real reason it started working, bit jic here is what I did. I checked online just to see (I'm not an idiot, I wasn't going to take it apart. Well, probably not). But I was still all for slapping and twisting and flicking the heck out of it. Then, I decided to look at the other side of it. So I removed the battery and there is a tiny little slit-like hole there. I got out a safety pin and just kinda wiggled of a bit mostly toward the inside of phone. Lo and behold sound was working when I turned it back on. I can't believe it! I'm so happy!

Possible to flash radio / rom / anything with broken USB?

After I got my skyrocket, many of my friends and family also decided on the skyrocket Well, now it's up to me to make sure they're all in working order.
So one of my family members left her skyrocket in a bag of water for a while while she was at the beach, and it was completely unresponsive. I fully disassembled it (not my first time), dried out the majority of the water, then left the phone in rice for a few days. The good news is, the phone boots up and seems to work. The battery still works and it charges over USB.
The bad news is, the cellular radio does not work, IMEI comes up as unknown, bluetooth mac is "unavailable", front facing camera is also unresponsive. Really bad news: data/adb over usb does not register at all. A few more days in rice haven't helped.
The phone is completely stock. My first thought was that flashing a new radio might reset the cellular somehow, but not having cwm/odin makes that impossible. I can't seem to get the phone into download mode either because of the USB problem.
One thing that DOES work is the stock recovery. I can tell it to flash the official ATT ICS build, which contains a radio!
However when I try flashing it says.. "E: Short write of /tmp/sideload/package.zip (No space left on device) Installation aborted". Other zips "failed to verify whole-file signature"
Any ideas? My next step will be buying a used skyrocket with a cracked screen, and transplanting the working screen from this unit...

First off, please use the Q&A section for, you know, questions and answers. Don't create a new thread; I'm going to ask the mods to move this one instead.
Second, your issue is that the hardware radio is dead. The stock ROM only has a software radio included. To put it a different way, the stock ROM includes programming that tells the cell radio what to do. It can't fix the cell radio if it's broken, though. Unfortunately, based on the amount of damage you've got there, I'd say your phone is pretty much toast.
If you're completely stock, try to warranty it out. Just be up front with Sammy about what happened (because, in this instance, they will figure it out if you make up a story or play dumb), and the worst thing they can say is no. You might get a sympathetic rep who'll help you out. If they won't take it, you've already got your backup plan in the working SR.

Meant to post this in Q&A, woops. Too many xda tabs open trying to figure this out. Sorry about that
I do know the difference between the hardware/software radios... My thought was that while the phone was turned on and submerged, the software radio could have become corrupt... A long shot perhaps
I'll try contacting samsung, but somehow I doubt they'll cover it. Sidenote, do you really think they have a more sophisticated way to check for water damage than the internal water-damage indicator sticker?
The question still stands though, if anyone is interested. Even without a cell radio, I'd like to be able to root it for other purposes
Thanks for the advice

Yeah, based on the amount of things going wrong, it's hardware. If the software radio was corrupt, it would be because the internal storage had been corrupted, and your phone likely would not boot.
And yes, they can find water damage beyond the sticker. They can see corrosion plain as day when they open it up and look at the internals.
You can root it without USB working. Is your wifi working? If so, download GooManager off the market, then follow the instructions in the TWRP thread to get TWRP on your phone. Download a custom ROM to your PC, then transfer it to your external SD using an adapter/card reader so you can place it on the card directly (instead of going through the USB port). Use TWRP to flash the pre-rooted ROM onto your phone and viola. Unless there's a pre-rooted stock out there (and I don't think there is for SR), a custom ROM is the only way I can think of to do it.
Be advised, though, that because of the amount of damage done to your phone's internals, there's a better-than-normal chance that something won't work and you'll brick. I'm not responsible for your decisions or for the brick if that happens.
Long story short, just get a replacement SR.
Same thing happened to my girls Atrix. She gave it a nice bath in Green Tea. After shutting it down and pulling it apart I gave it the rice treatment for 48 hours. Booted but returned a radio error. Her USB port was working so I was able to root it and install a few custom ROMs on it. No change. So I would bet you actually fried the chip. Call Sammi and get a quote to cover the repair which will be a new mobo. They pay shipping both ways and are usually pretty cheap.

Heh, this is my mother's phone actually. First she ripped the screen ribbon cable on a nokia E75. Then she smashed her Atrix's screen, tried to fix it herself with a new screen, and managed to rip part of a ribbon cable... so it no longer has a working touch digitizer. Now she left her skyrocket in a bag of water. The girlfriend managed to crack her skyrocket's screen, which I replaced... I've also had to fix 2x nokia N95's, an N97, and a bunch of water damaged dumb phones over the years...
FWIW, the skyrocket seems to have the best repairability / internal layout of any of the phones I've messed with
The cracked screen skyrockets on ebay seem to be going for more than I thought, so I'll be giving sammy a call for sure
