[Q] Are there ICS ROMs for the Thunderbolt? - Thunderbolt General

If so, how stable are they? Are there speed gains from ICS on single core phones?
I know two people with Thunderbolts and one of them asked me. I don't know a whole lot about them aside from specs...They do have a lot of RAM for a single core phone which I assume would be great for ICS.

No, not at this time. Be patient, they're coming.

There is one by Twistedumbrella that is very stable. But it has no RIL... Aka no calls, texts or data.

People need to stop whining about dual core...

You guys who complain constantly that the Thunderbolt isn't running a dual core processor need to just stop and realize that software follows hardware development by months and years. That means that even if the TB HAD a dual core processor, not only would Gingerbread not be able to fully utilize it, but none of the software available in the market would know what to do with dual cores either.
When dual cores came out for PC systems, Windows XP wasn't even capable of using more than one core. They had to put out a new OS, Vista - which sucks - and then service patch the hell out of XP for it to take advantage of the dual core systems. Hell, Windows didn't even natively support Hyperthreading when Intel first announced it, it also took a huge patch to be recognized and dealt with by the XP Operating System.
All you guys complaining about not having dual cores in HTC phones should be THANKING HTC for giving us the most stable and best hardware on the market... No, they aren't "bleeding edge" like Samsung, but lets be honest here... How many Android users do you know who own any number of HTC phones, and how many do you know who are either not happy with, or returned their Samsung phones? I love the Droid 1, and don't get me wrong, the Droid Bionic looks like one badass phone, but I'll stick with HTC and stability any day over bleeding edge features that might not work for months because of the software not being able to keep up with the hardware changes.
Again, Gingerbread does NOT have the capability to take full advantage of dual core processors yet, so stop worrying about it, and just be happy with the fact that they are still producing phones for us that work, that people are pleased with, and don't get returned because of a ****ty UI or sluggish response compared to another phone. I dunno about you guys, but I'm getting a Thunderbolt on release day, and in three months, I'll upgrade another line to the next HTC release, and three months after that, and so on until I've replaced all 5 of my lines with brand spankin new HTC phones. Screw the lockdown on Moto phones - and even if the Bionic isn't locked down, it will still have Motoblur (read: failsauce) - and the crappy UI and toyish feel of Samsung phones... HTC is always on the forefront of Android development... and for everything they've given us in the Eris, the Incredible, and now the Thunderbolt, we should be a bit more appreciative.
Feel free to complain about the battery life, cuz yeah... it sucks.
What incentive do you have for upgrading if you already contain one of the countless other android phones that were released in the last year with
A 1ghz processor

Well yeah, but the DHD isn't available to Verizon users. The comparable for most of us is the Incredible and the Thunderbolt IS an upgrade, despite misconceptions about its processor.

A lot of us are in those markets.
Hoping to ditch my Eris as soon as this comes out. Hopefully they'll offer an early upgrade option since my contract doesn't expire until May. Still, that wouldn't be too long to wait. Here's hoping I don't get screwed with extra 4G prices since I won't be in any of those 2011 markets, and I only want a 1-year contract for this puppy.
Since the LTE functionality has it's own SIM, it could be removed if the user didn't want LTE and then VZW wouldn't need to charge extra for 4G. Of course, all of this would depend on VZW not being greedy and not following the Sprint's example... which is pretty unlikely, I guess.
LTE is the reason for change. As for XP... It handles multiple cores just fine, op.

I'm still rocking my G1 that I got almost two years ago with T-Mo. Contract is up mid-Feb. I can't WAIT to hop on VZW with the Thunderbolt.
Well, I am rockin the Eris still, can upgrade in March, and I'm stuck between ThunderBolt, LG Revolution, and Samsung's no-name. I'm just disappointed because the ThunderBolt is essentially an Evo. So in the like 9 months since that was released, has HTC not made any advances? That's what's most upsetting to me, you know?
Totally. I have noticed every phone worth caring about for the last 6 months at least have had 4.3" screens. The last 4 or so HTC phones have been basically the same hardware. I understand the draw of the huge screen but I'm 5'2" so... HTC please give me thunderbolt specs in Eris / Nexus size >.<

Not all processors are created equal. The 1ghz processor is not the same 1ghz processor as the incredible (google pipelining). I think the incredible has a version 1 snapdragon and the thunderbolt is a version 3.
As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather have sense with a single core than blur with a million cores!

To the person that said they were waiting on the Samsung with no name. A little advice, save yourself because that phone will start off an entire OS version behind. And it won't even be samsungs flagship device as far as we know ATM. so it will likely never even get gingerbread. And even if it is a flagship device from them, look at the entire US galaxy s line. All five of them are "flagship" type devices. Question. Do they even have froyo. Answer. NO! I wasted almost $600 on that POS fascinate. That is actually a nice phone just doesn't have froyo. So don't waste any more time with Samsung. I think we, as paying customers needto make sure they pay a price for their disloyalty(word?).

I have an eris. Every once in awhile I go on craigslist and search for stuff for sale. Found a like new Droid X with case for $200. They go for 300+ on ebay. Dude wants an iPhone I'll be picking it up on the 31st....already got the MEID from him and checked it with verizon.
I'm gonna use that for a few months and see what develops in LTE. I've seen rumors that Moto has been modifying Blur to make it less intrusive, more like vanilla. Should be able to get 200-250 for the DX ina few months.
I like the RAM increase in the Thunderbolt (can also OC) vs the Bionic. And, though still speculative since they aren't out, the TB should be easier to root and install custom roms.
Is the atrix the only upcoming phone with 1GB of ram? I can't find anything on the revolution.
The samsung is weird looking.

[Q] I jumped ship to htc to try the htc sensation and regretting it.

hello everyone. coming over from the galaxy s forums.
i recently jumped ships and bought an htc sensation 4g (tmous) and i rooted it yadda yadda yadda flashed insert coin, leedroid, and revolutionhd nonsense.
now coming from a galaxy s vibrant running bali 1.8.8 kernal, bionix v 1.3.1 and lcd density set at 192 which all worked so good for me.
i need you guys to tell me this is a good phone and i should keep it bc i want to give it a shot however all the roms i flash for the sensation are slow for me.
im looking for a clean no sense build and revolutionhd no sense is that rom. when i run a quadrant the phone gets about a 850 900 on revolution hd. i kno quad scores dont mean much but the phone feels sluggish and slow.
can someone direct me on what im doing wrong and why this phone appears to run so slow? i mean really slow. is this how htc phones perform? my last htc phone was a mt3gslide running cm6 at the time
Try revolution HD 3.0.1, 3.0.2 was kinda slow on my phone but 3.0.1 is mega fast. If its not fast enough, then this might not be the phone for you, but for me and most others its fast enough. Also, quadrant doesn't even utilize the second core.

il straight trade for a nexus s
Before trading it in, please try the 2.3.0 version of Leedroid.
High benchmark scores (check thread), superb battery life (1,5-2 days with light-normale use) and very smooth.
The Sensation should be the best phone there is atm considering the hardware. Unfortunately HTC didn't optimize the ROM + drivers for it.
Also damn you HTC for being so ssssslow in releasing the 2.3.4 kernel. Lot's of people could do magic with it

If you're willing, wait till ROMs come out that have proper dual core support. Not this madness where you force once core to be on all the time, but a ROM that intelligently manages both cores to maximize performance/battery life. Also ICS should bring better dual core support. If you can't wait, then jumping ship seems like the answer.
I would wait to jump ship. It's a new phone, New set of hardware. The dual-core is still being delta with. For the most part, I think this thing fly's. Small bugs, but time will heal all. If you trade now, two months from now your gonna kick your own asset around for trading. Just saying. Good luck to you

Okay eww on Samsung, I had (still have but dont use) a Captivate, they don't have working GPS, TW is so laggy, samsung makes great tv's, ****ty phones. Good luck. I love my Sensation, maybe I got lucky, I have none of the issues I read about on the forums. I am still on stock because, as of now, it's perfect out of the box. I tried a few ROMe but without kernel source for 2.3.4 they are full of bugs. Maybe it's perfect for my daily use, idk, so far, it's been a great two weeks.

hear hear! it its a really good fone, but SOOOOO different from the sgs/sgsII when comparing hardware/software...
the processor is far too advanced for the software to actuaal make proper use of it, aSync is a little tricky, but the devs here are doing some AMAZING work to get both running at the same time (bear in mind this processor is NOTHING like hyperthreading for dekstops, its practically like 2 physical processors on a single chip)
it will get much better before it gets any worse, and my saving grace is that this fone launched almost 6 months before the iphone 5, and the specs are STILL better take that jobs/cook!
I came from an SGS with custom roms which was pretty smooth but I have to say the Sensation with P3D Neon rom is a lot smoother and the Sense animations are very fluid. I also find the browser to be a lot better than that on the SGS especially with the extra qHD resolution.

What makes the g2x so special

I coming from htc g2 and all i got to say is that i am disappointed I though I was making a big jump changing to this phone but I was wrong.i was able to over clock my g2 to 1.8 ghz and have a very snappy phone with good battery life now with the g2x its the other way around I tried all the roms and theres always something or some kind of bug with them. This phone is actually 10x better than the g2 and is a worthy upgrade, but I don't think you're worthy...
You have Tegra 2 games advantage. Browser performance is probably little bit faster on G2X even though they both can probably only do 480p Adobe Flash at max.

probably one of the best up to date phones that has vanilla android. cant stand sense that much
Well the G2 is a good solid phone. It's been out for much longer and is seasoned and tweaked to run well. I had a Nexus One and it worked pretty well.
One thing you have to realize is that Android doesn't even take advantage of dual cores yet, not until Ice Cream Sandwich. ICS also will bring (supposedly) whole UI graphic acceleration (like Win7 and iOS) for smooth transitions and fancy effects.
So while what you say is true, (My G2 was just as fast as the G2x), you are speaking in terms of NOW. But the G2x has some power under its hood. If Android can unlock the GPU for its UI, we'll definitely have the fastest phone out there.
As far as Streaming TV and video, that sounds like an app issue. You came from a second generation Snapdragon which was widely supported to a Tegra 2 which is new and fresh. Different apps run differently on different chipsets. If you use a Video player that properly utilizes the Tegra's, you'll have smooth playback. Bandwidth also comes into play. I stream Netflix all the time and have no issues, just depends on where you are. Hotels usually throttle network utilization so everyone can grab a piece of the pie, especially voice, video and P2P traffic. I typically have no issue at hotels either and I travel a LOT.
Perhaps it would be beneficial to tell us your setup. Rom, kernel, apps, etc.
I run MIUI 1.9.23 and no special kernel (ATM) or use Faux's 4.2 SV Kernel at normal speeds. I don't OC or UV or anything fancy. MIUI still has its issues but overall works great and is a joy to use.
MIUI, CM7, or Weapon is the best choices IMO. Weapon works VERY well but I think its butt ugly coming from MIUI or CM7 themes (no offense!). CM7 and MIUI work great but will probably never be perfect (because they are always changing and adding stuff) where Weapon is going after a stock-like perfection.
Also lots of the issues of the custom roms regarding WiFi Calling and APN issues are thought to be caused by the SIM card or related. I ordered a SUPER OLD never used SIM card off ebay, the old style, and will do some testing to see if I get any better results. Cost me $5.50 total and if it works, it will be money well spent. Good luck Jim.

If the devs port ICS we will see it, LG won't be giving us anymore updates. G2X is dead to them.
Oh no doubt, my statement was based on the deb's porting it to all our devices. I know LG isn't gonna release any more updates or OTA cuz they suck. Without our devs our phones would never see ICS and therefore be obsolete long time ago.

There is no legal binding about the update. Even the GB update was to fix the issues they had and save their brand-name.

Please do leave, You sir have no concept of how a processor works. If you over clock to 1.55 Its clocked at 1.55, Its not 3ghz because you can add both together. It just does not work like that, Tasks that are made to run on one core don't become suddenly faster because of the extra core helping out, The extra core hardly helps out at all. The only reason why the tegra 2 is Snappy is because of the CPU architecture and the gpu that's bolted in. Benchmarks don't mean a thing if a Snapdragon MSM8255 can run toe to toe with the Tegra 2 in applications.
The G2x is an awesome phone. I think that you just have not found a ROM that suites your needs. My wife has a G2 and she is all the time saying that she wants to switch phones because hers is so slow. Hers is rooted and overclocked to 1.5Ghz. I haven't had a single issue with the phone.
I've had about 5 random reboots in the past 6 months that I've had my G2x.
Only ran on stock for about 3 days. After that running differents roms weekly.
I've never had any reboots. No screen bleed. I've had zero issues, phone rules flawlessly. The capacitive buttons are legit and are the perfect sensitivity. ROMs make this the phone to beat for TMo, expect maybe the Amaze or SGS2. But this Tegra 2 chipset (despite it's closed nature) is really legitimate. Performs super well.
I say get it unless you're willing to shell out the $$ for either of the two mentioned above.
Reboots only occur on the Stock roms. It is a kernel issue.
CM7 has also boinked something up the past few nightlies and its kernel is doing a Screen of Death (won't wake up)... but their beta anyway. A different kernel is the solution. This is only for the past 3-4 nightlies. Normally no issues. I'm running the latest nightly #201 and I haven't had any issues the past few days.
Most custom roms don't have reboot issues.
There's better devices out there. Hell, I'd even get the Nexus S over this.
GB is really fast on this phone and other than the fact that the processor is closed source, it's a great phone.

My question is, do custom roms like miui and cm7 utilize the dual core processor in the phone?
if the processor is closed source, how come there are custom roms?

No, MIUI nor CM7 uses both cores to the fullest. It uses the other core just for small stuff.
nVidia doesn't release the source for their Tegra, thus we don't have governors for the processors and ICS straight for source seems to be a failure with out the Tegra source as hardware acceleration won't be working with out it.
MIUI is still kinda buggy for me, so I stick to CM7 or a stock LG GB build.

I had a g2x 5-6 months ago but had to sell it at the time for bills. I liked it a lot at the time. When I was caught back up, I picked up a Sensation. I drooled over the Sensation since it was announced and was glad to be able to get one. After a month or two of owning it, I was relieved to be able to get rid it. Rooted, overclocked, custom rom etc.. Battery life was poor regardless of what I tried. It was also surprisingly laggy to me.
I picked up another G2x a couple of days ago. Battery life has been livable, performance has been great overall. I'd still recommend a g2x to just about anyone. Cant necessarily say the same about the Sensation.

No random reboots or other problems since I got a reborn g2x with GB because the OS died during the official update from Froyo. All around very satisfactory. Good cameras, reasonable battery life, gps locks at about the same speed as my Nexus One, good screen size. No reason to update to Nexus Prime and LG says ICS is coming, although this time I'll wait to see if they've done the upgrade right.

I'm confident we will get a working ics rom with everything working eventually, when that happens and the new kernel/baseband proves to be better then previous versions, the g2x will be a force to be reckoned with!
It already is a beast of a phone and with ics utilizing all the strengths of the g2x i'll be that much more excited i stuck around with mine til a worthy upgrade comes around(quadcore/truely better battery life/display)

any body go from super amoled to the g2x display?
how is it?
there is no good video online showing differences.
@OP: its a great phone, my current copy has not been giving me any hardware trouble. No reboots, no overheating etc. This is my 4th g2x though. I would not buy this phone on the used market without a good warranty. But direct from Tmo or with a decent warranty, it is worth the hassle for an otherwise awesome phone.
@dapoharoun: My previous phone was an SGS4g (with super amoled display). Definitely a better display than the g2x. The blacks are (amazingly) completely black. Which makes the colors really pop. Particularly awesome if you use a ROM/app with black background (e.g. CM7 MMS has this option.) The single exception to this is with photography. Samsung has tuned up the saturation, and photos looks unrealistic on this display. The photos themselves are fine, it just when we review them on the AMOLED.
Great phone no problem's here.I was only stock for two days though.

One X+????

So if you haven't seen engadet or other sites there seems to be a HTC One X+ POSSIBLY coming to ATT and would be running stock Android 4.1.1 could this have been the reason for the recent price drop? Is it worth holding out on upgrading until this is all cleared up?
I really have to ask, but what else could they do to make this phone better?
Ship it with jelly bean? Cmon that's not going to be worth it, especially if its just a 'slightly' upgraded phone
The one x+ is going to be a tmobile phone, its going to have a quad core tegra with jelly bean, so its not an upgrade from ours. This phone beats out the tegra

Doesn't T-Mobile have a history of running vanilla versions of Android? Their G-Series phones (G1, G2/Vision) from HTC all had vanilla Android, maybe this will be their next G-Series phone?

No, they also like to have their sense phones run an espresso sense. Since our launchers already have this look then I'm sure its not going to be different, maybe they will include the theme engine... But that's hopefull thinking

I totally forgot about their expresso line and myTouch line.. doh, thanks for clearing that.
Should be called the one x- because the tegra is not very good and we already have pretty stable AOSP jellybean

Not sure why there's so much hate towards the tegra 3 processor? I personally have the dual core version and my girlfriend has the quad core; the quad core scores about 4500 pts higher.on anututu than mine. Everyday usage is the same, though I get lte where she can't, but she has 32gb storage and we have 16.
Point of my post is, why is there that much hate between the two variants?

wow couldnt have said this better your right and the development and support the international version is getting is just so much better because they dont have to deal with att bull****
ans to the one who said we have a steady build of cm10 lol we dont trust me
we might soon but the devs are working their asses off and for every two steps they make forward at&t takes three steps back
The One X+ on AT&T would just be the international version with a slight overclock and an LTE radio, maybe a bigger battery. Not really all that great, and really it would be an awful move that would dilute the brand and create confusion due to the lack of a single flagship.
Now, if there was a One X on T-Mobile, that would be great, they don't have a true HTC flagship for this year.
The same would go for Verizon. They need a true HTC flagship phone, and preferably one that is just a Evo LTE in a different design.
Tmobile is said to be getting the hox+

XD we have a really stable cm10. I don't need a camera. My device has lte and the s4 at least on jelly bean is way faster than the tegra. Also look on your phone. Are you constantly having to delete stuff to make space? Chances are nobody needs extra space in the age of cloud storage. If it was a very little difference then it wouldn't matter but the tegra was rushed together in order for them to say they had the first quad core processor. It's old and it's sloppily built.

Yes I got to agree with you about the tegra 3 being rushed out, like a old car with a new engine duck taped in . Although about 16gb (more like 10gb) being enough data, I would say no. Yes, there is cloud but not everyone has a good/unlimited data plan (I only have 100mb for $50) which kinda counters the advantage of cloud technology.

No I think you are confusing the G-series with the Mytouch series. The MyTouch 4g had espresso sense, and the g2 had stock android 2.2
G1 was also pure google.
