should i get the g2x? - T-Mobile LG G2x

everything about this phone makes me drool
only thing im hesitating about is the random reboots
how often does it reboot for you guys?

Mine hasn't done it one time.

Don't get it.

Great phone! I've had zero issues and have nothing but praise for this handset.

No reboots unless your on stock 2.2 for some odd reason. Everything else is smooth. No problems here.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium

I haven't had a single issue with the phone.

I've had about 5 random reboots in the past 6 months that I've had my G2x.
Only ran on stock for about 3 days. After that running differents roms weekly.

I've never had any reboots. No screen bleed. I've had zero issues, phone rules flawlessly. The capacitive buttons are legit and are the perfect sensitivity. ROMs make this the phone to beat for TMo, expect maybe the Amaze or SGS2. But this Tegra 2 chipset (despite it's closed nature) is really legitimate. Performs super well.
I say get it unless you're willing to shell out the $$ for either of the two mentioned above.

Reboots only occur on the Stock roms. It is a kernel issue.
CM7 has also boinked something up the past few nightlies and its kernel is doing a Screen of Death (won't wake up)... but their beta anyway. A different kernel is the solution. This is only for the past 3-4 nightlies. Normally no issues. I'm running the latest nightly #201 and I haven't had any issues the past few days.
Most custom roms don't have reboot issues.

There's better devices out there. Hell, I'd even get the Nexus S over this.
GB is really fast on this phone and other than the fact that the processor is closed source, it's a great phone.

There are always gonna be better devices, and they will have their own issues, read somewhere that the NS had some overheating issues. I love my phone and I'm not changing it till I got ICS running on it for a while...
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App

I'm getting this phone too, hopefully. I want the g2x because its 4", 8mp flash, dual core, not too expensive, and is officially getting ICS(i think). I never buy my phones from t mobile because i feel its a rip off (short software support of phones that will be free in a month). I hope the closed source processor stuff changes.
My question is, do custom roms like miui and cm7 utilize the dual core processor in the phone?
if the processor is closed source, how come there are custom roms?
thanks

No, MIUI nor CM7 uses both cores to the fullest. It uses the other core just for small stuff.
nVidia doesn't release the source for their Tegra, thus we don't have governors for the processors and ICS straight for source seems to be a failure with out the Tegra source as hardware acceleration won't be working with out it.
MIUI is still kinda buggy for me, so I stick to CM7 or a stock LG GB build.

I had a g2x 5-6 months ago but had to sell it at the time for bills. I liked it a lot at the time. When I was caught back up, I picked up a Sensation. I drooled over the Sensation since it was announced and was glad to be able to get one. After a month or two of owning it, I was relieved to be able to get rid it. Rooted, overclocked, custom rom etc.. Battery life was poor regardless of what I tried. It was also surprisingly laggy to me.
I picked up another G2x a couple of days ago. Battery life has been livable, performance has been great overall. I'd still recommend a g2x to just about anyone. Cant necessarily say the same about the Sensation.
Sent from my A100 using xda premium

No random reboots or other problems since I got a reborn g2x with GB because the OS died during the official update from Froyo. All around very satisfactory. Good cameras, reasonable battery life, gps locks at about the same speed as my Nexus One, good screen size. No reason to update to Nexus Prime and LG says ICS is coming, although this time I'll wait to see if they've done the upgrade right.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App

I'm confident we will get a working ics rom with everything working eventually, when that happens and the new kernel/baseband proves to be better then previous versions, the g2x will be a force to be reckoned with!
It already is a beast of a phone and with ics utilizing all the strengths of the g2x i'll be that much more excited i stuck around with mine til a worthy upgrade comes around(quadcore/truely better battery life/display)

any body go from super amoled to the g2x display?
how is it?
there is no good video online showing differences.

@OP: its a great phone, my current copy has not been giving me any hardware trouble. No reboots, no overheating etc. This is my 4th g2x though. I would not buy this phone on the used market without a good warranty. But direct from Tmo or with a decent warranty, it is worth the hassle for an otherwise awesome phone.
@dapoharoun: My previous phone was an SGS4g (with super amoled display). Definitely a better display than the g2x. The blacks are (amazingly) completely black. Which makes the colors really pop. Particularly awesome if you use a ROM/app with black background (e.g. CM7 MMS has this option.) The single exception to this is with photography. Samsung has tuned up the saturation, and photos looks unrealistic on this display. The photos themselves are fine, it just when we review them on the AMOLED.

Great phone no problem's here.I was only stock for two days though.

I'm already running sense 3.0 on this device.hmmm, yeah maybe the sgs2 will do.
Only issue is that there might not be a SGS2 for T-mo. The names have been revealed for all carriers, but there's no sign of one for us. The G2X is better than the MT4G in it's specs, but wait 7 days and get the sensation. bigger screen, better processor, and HTC build quality. Also, it doesn't look like it will be super expensive. Walmart will have it for 150 on contract.

Only the processor is better. It has a lot less RAM (512 vs the MT4G's 768). I would never want to run a ROM like Virtuous Fusion on the G2x with such little RAM.
I'm just saying I have used a g2x and its very snappy.

I went from MT4G to G2X. It is faster - even without an android ROM that optimizes duel core (true for all of them), which was to be 2.4 - but that has been pushed way back.
The Sensation is supposed to have the boot loader locked - so forget flashing anything. There is chatter about HTC coming out with an unlocking mechanism - but I would not buy that device based on maybe it will get unlocked.
Some have gotten quadrent scores of 5000+ with CM7 and faux kernel (Max OC "only" 1500 currently). It has a better camera then the sense camera on MT4G, but I never liked the sense one - it had too much compression, so used camera app form the market on my MT4G.
HTC confirmed that they were working on an update for the sensation to unlock its bootloader. I would not worry about it.

I went from the G2x to the MT4G (gave up on the G2x because of backlight bleeding). I honestly didn't feel much of a difference. Virtuous Fusion on my MT4G runs fast enough for anything and with Chainfire3D, I can play all the Tegra 2 games and do everything fast as I need. I was originally planning on getting the Sensation. I still might, but I'm considering waiting til the Tegra 3 and comparable phones come out.
I would wait till next year when they start making Quad-core phones, which is in Qualcomm's roadmap, and probably others too. The G2X will be outdone by the SGSII(Fastest Phone now, blows G2X ) . The Sensation is slower than the SGSII, but is still a good phone nonetheless. Not really worth the upgrade from the MT4G. If you care about things like ram, companies are starting to use 1GB ram and hopefully they increase ROM size for more internal storage.

Agreed. For me this phone will totally be enough for the next year and a half thanks to the awesome work of the dev community. Rooting and flashing a custom ROM has given my phone new life, so personally I can now confidently wait to get my next "uber" phone when my contract expires.
it seems that the g2x has alot of problems compared to mytouch 4g. the one i was able to use kept shutting off and on!
i would wait for something worthwhile!
One of my coworkers has this phone. I messed around with it for a while and it seems to be pretty nice, but not quite enough of an upgrade for me to ditch this phone for.

Almost every phone on XDA started out with a locked bootloader. You make no sense with your comment about a locked bootloader. My MyTouch came locked but look at how fast that was bypassed.
BTW: HTC has already stated publicly that an OTA update will unlock it in the near future.
Im with the others, not worth an upgrade. just wait until the quads come out
I love the MT4G. I still have my Nexus One but with 768MB RAM, I can find NO reason to upgrade at this point. And to compound that decision, all the recent reviews have said that the screen is lackluster at best. Sure the higher resolution is nice but if you don't couple that with a great screen it does NO good at all.
And that great device (Sensation) still comes with the same RAM as the MT4G. Sorry, but at a time when tech prices are what they are, packing 1GB+ into a smartphone should be the baseline standard. If I upgraded to anything right now it would be the SGS2 but I intend to wait for quad cores to pop up. My desktop and laptop both have quad cores so my phone should too.
The MT4G with CM7 runs fantastic.
I have a g2x right now, my wife has a mytouch4g. The g2x is quicker, and has more potential. I can say though, it isn't significantly quicker for having a dual core processor and vanilla android, and it definitely does have more software issues.
I (just like others) thought the issues complained about were exaggerated and I was lucky enough to get a g2x without issues. The screen bleeding isn't horrible, but I have had the random reboots (usually daily). Battery life is poor at best, there isn't any lagging but it does stumble and freeze for a second occasionally. Great at multitasking and gaming though.
My wife is pretty picky about her phones and complains if there are any issues... I haven't heard her complain about the mytouch except low earpiece volume.

Would you happen to know why CM7 runs so poorly on the G2x?
And I agree. CM7 on a MT4G makes it feel like it was never meant to be a Sense phone. So smooth....

Would you recommend this phone? (Vibrant user)

I've currently got a Vibrant, and my stepmom's phone is near the end of it's life- My parents are offering to buy my phone from me and so I'm looking at my options.
What does everyone here think of this phone? Anyone an ex-Vibrant user who can compare experiences for me? Thanks very much!
I didn't have a Vibrant... I wanted one though, does that count?
I recommend this phone to everyone... except future people who have quad cores on a Super-Duper AMOLED screen running Rainbow Sherbert(Android 7.4 duh).
Seriously though, it has some quirks, but is a bad a** phone...

I would not.
It has potential and I'm glad that a lot of the major developers are on board, but right now it's broken- both in stock form and in the aftermarket. Until the stock ROM can at least be said to work (and right now there are more than a few major issues) I think a recommendation of "Do Not Buy" is a good one.
And for you, specifically, coming from a Vibrant would suck since you're moving from a phone with non-working GPS to a phone with non-working GPS. Wouldn't you at least like to navigate properly once before you die?

I have to disagree. This phone is amazing. I had some minor issues running stock, but once I rooted and flashed its been smooth sailing for me. I'm running the Ultimate G2X rom and couldn't be happier with it. Everything works fine, including GPS.
I'm not denying that some have issues with their phones, but not all of us do. It really is an awesome phone and I'd recommend it to anyone. I do recommend buying it new though, in case you do have a defeectice unit so you can return it.
I've had the vibrant since release. The g2x is definitely an upgrade, though not a huge one. Gaming on the vibrant is probably better than any other single core phone so you're probably not going to notice much improvement, the screen is great, speed is decent. Even though both the vibrant and g2x have their software quirks, EVERYTHING works on the g2x(gps in particular works everytime for me where the vibrant was hit or miss, mostly miss).
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
I can say that I do recommend this phone. I don't think a lot of people have major issues, I certainly don't, and I bought it used in excellent condition. Tegra 2 is amazing for gaming, and everything is just really fast in general.
I came from a G2, which had a physical keyboard, easily removable battery door, and LED light. The G2x has none of these, but the only thing I really miss is the LED light, which can be remedied with an app called LG 2x/Black notifications that uses the capacitive buttons as an LED indicator
I had the Vibrant and the Vibrant 4G. When the G2X was announced, I jumped on it. I would buy it again but if you're watching new releases, there's a sweet Vibrant Galaxy S 2 comming to USA kinda soon....
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Honestly? Sure, the G2X is probably better than the Vibrant...
However....
It's not THAT much better. I would save the upgrade for the NEXT generation phone after the G2X and Sensation. As far as I'm concerned, the Vibrant isn't suffering from old age yet, like the MyTouch 3G it replaced for me! Of course, the MyTouch 3G was born Geriatric.
Nah, i wouldn't recommend this phone.
Reboots.
Freezes.
Screen bleeding.
Wifi connection.

Thanks all for the replies... One other thing: How brick-proof is this thing? I'm loving having ODIN on my vibrant (I'm always flashing ROMs and kernals), and ODIN is a big reason why I've been really hesitant to drop the Samsung (well, and the screen and onboard memory and battery...)
Thanks again!

What makes the g2x so special

I coming from htc g2 and all i got to say is that i am disappointed I though I was making a big jump changing to this phone but I was wrong.i was able to over clock my g2 to 1.8 ghz and have a very snappy phone with good battery life now with the g2x its the other way around I tried all the roms and theres always something or some kind of bug with them. This phone is actually 10x better than the g2 and is a worthy upgrade, but I don't think you're worthy...
You have Tegra 2 games advantage. Browser performance is probably little bit faster on G2X even though they both can probably only do 480p Adobe Flash at max.

probably one of the best up to date phones that has vanilla android. cant stand sense that much
Well the G2 is a good solid phone. It's been out for much longer and is seasoned and tweaked to run well. I had a Nexus One and it worked pretty well.
One thing you have to realize is that Android doesn't even take advantage of dual cores yet, not until Ice Cream Sandwich. ICS also will bring (supposedly) whole UI graphic acceleration (like Win7 and iOS) for smooth transitions and fancy effects.
So while what you say is true, (My G2 was just as fast as the G2x), you are speaking in terms of NOW. But the G2x has some power under its hood. If Android can unlock the GPU for its UI, we'll definitely have the fastest phone out there.
As far as Streaming TV and video, that sounds like an app issue. You came from a second generation Snapdragon which was widely supported to a Tegra 2 which is new and fresh. Different apps run differently on different chipsets. If you use a Video player that properly utilizes the Tegra's, you'll have smooth playback. Bandwidth also comes into play. I stream Netflix all the time and have no issues, just depends on where you are. Hotels usually throttle network utilization so everyone can grab a piece of the pie, especially voice, video and P2P traffic. I typically have no issue at hotels either and I travel a LOT.
Perhaps it would be beneficial to tell us your setup. Rom, kernel, apps, etc.
I run MIUI 1.9.23 and no special kernel (ATM) or use Faux's 4.2 SV Kernel at normal speeds. I don't OC or UV or anything fancy. MIUI still has its issues but overall works great and is a joy to use.
MIUI, CM7, or Weapon is the best choices IMO. Weapon works VERY well but I think its butt ugly coming from MIUI or CM7 themes (no offense!). CM7 and MIUI work great but will probably never be perfect (because they are always changing and adding stuff) where Weapon is going after a stock-like perfection.
Also lots of the issues of the custom roms regarding WiFi Calling and APN issues are thought to be caused by the SIM card or related. I ordered a SUPER OLD never used SIM card off ebay, the old style, and will do some testing to see if I get any better results. Cost me $5.50 total and if it works, it will be money well spent. Good luck Jim.

If the devs port ICS we will see it, LG won't be giving us anymore updates. G2X is dead to them.
Oh no doubt, my statement was based on the deb's porting it to all our devices. I know LG isn't gonna release any more updates or OTA cuz they suck. Without our devs our phones would never see ICS and therefore be obsolete long time ago.

There is no legal binding about the update. Even the GB update was to fix the issues they had and save their brand-name.

Please do leave, You sir have no concept of how a processor works. If you over clock to 1.55 Its clocked at 1.55, Its not 3ghz because you can add both together. It just does not work like that, Tasks that are made to run on one core don't become suddenly faster because of the extra core helping out, The extra core hardly helps out at all. The only reason why the tegra 2 is Snappy is because of the CPU architecture and the gpu that's bolted in. Benchmarks don't mean a thing if a Snapdragon MSM8255 can run toe to toe with the Tegra 2 in applications.
The G2x is an awesome phone. I think that you just have not found a ROM that suites your needs. My wife has a G2 and she is all the time saying that she wants to switch phones because hers is so slow. Hers is rooted and overclocked to 1.5Ghz. G2x or the HTC Sensation

I currently have a G2 (no X) on tmobile and I'm thinking I want to upgrade to a dual cpu phone but I don't want to renew my contract. I've been watching phones on ebay and an average sale price for the g2x is around $220-$250, while the Sensation seems to go for around $300-$350. I've got a couple questions:
1. Is either phone going to be a noticeable upgrade from my G2 (rooted, it runs at 1.2 and gets about 2200 on quadrant)
2. I know this is the G2x forum so it may be a biased answer, but which phone would be better (smoother, most stable, etc) assuming I'm going to root it and install a custom rom.
Last, if I do go with the g2x, what are some favorite rom's you all use? I've been using meXdroid on my g2 but that isn't available for either the sensation or X.

lol GET THE G2X!!!!!! after rooting and slapping a custom rom on there its super stable no reboots, no funny business. Currently running the weapon rom. zero issues but will most likely flash something this weekend because i ....i feel that itch again
+1 its the only bad thing about rooting, you can't stop flashing!
The G2x stock is a contender still within the high end market. Throw a custom rom into the mix and it flies!
Rocking the weaponx atm.

and they already said were getting ics in earlier 2012.
lg confirmed they will too. but look how long it took them to give gb on the 2x.
well when i get a phone i like to see the camera first and the stock sensation camera is better than the g2x. and we already have mod to flash the amaze camera.
i love both on my devices but i use more the sensation than the g2x
get the g2x very nice phone and like they said once u root lol its rom after rom after rom lol
i am very disappointed with the g2x we have 4 of them and all shut down, freeze up etc... even after installing roms still very glitchy, very buggy. ... i dont know much about the sensation except that HTC makes good devices and they do support their devices unlike LG releasing phones with no support whatsoever.

Sensation has a higher resolution and a larger screen but its camera is buggy (My mate's red car turned complete bright pink! ). G2X has a crap quality camera on the other hand but it gets its colours right.
I find G2x screen more vibrant compared to sensation.
Like others have said, if you need support and are not into rooting/custom roms than Sensation is the way to go (Better support than LG, Htc Sense is anyday better than LGs UI and slightly better specs).
But if you're into rooting and custom roms, I don't see any reason not to opt for G2x. The phone works fast and is bug free (I'm on cm 7.1.0.1 stable).
Also G2x battery life is better than Sensation.

I'm talking from personal experience. It may vary depending on how people handle their devices too.
I have 250 apps + installed and get around 8-10 hours on full charge. Mobile data on, regular texting, browsing etc. A mate's g2x lasts for 15hours+ (less apps than me and lesser texting/more standby). Both of us use custom roms.
Comparing that to another mate's sensation...his battery lasts about 6-6.5 hours with internet usage probably similar and number of apps lesser than me. Stock rom.

I hear this a lot but I have to completely disagree. Maybe I'm missing something but the quality on the G2x has been nothing but fantastic in my uses. The colors from the images taken are phenomenal; bright and crisp. I take great pics in dim settings with the flash. I've taken pics at various work sites to email off for visual confirmations and I've gotten several inquiries about what camera I used. They all are very surprised when they find out it is just my phone's camera and say that the photo's are awesome.
I've even sold my iPad2 and snapped pics for upload and had compliments.
The G2x doesn't do well with motion shots, but no phone I've owned or used has. Although it IS much better at taking motion shots (of my boy) then most phones we've tried. I can typically take 4/5 good shots of him.
I have 2 g2x's. I don't care what anyone says, this phone is incredible. Granted oc'ed, I have hit the highest marks on 3 different benchmarks. This is not a posers phone, yeah, little glitchy, what do you expect with that much power in a device this small. It's like a musclecar, they were glitchy and ridiculously fast.

My vote is for the Sensation. There are a lot of people who claim they have no issues with their G2X but unfortunately I did not fall in this category. I went through three different G2X's and all of them experienced some sort of issue that made day to day use very frustrating.

reason??? Because sensation is easier to dev for?

How is the G2X treating you?

i have had the g2x for a while
and it is a great phone!
love it!
but im kinda coming from a Mt4g, im missing sense :[
anyways,
i just wanted to start a thread asking users....
HOW IS YOUR G2X TREATING YOU?
Mine has been flawless, (little screen bleed) got it 4/20, its just tha everybody and they mama got a g nexus makes me itch for one, other than that patiently awaiting ics.
NVIDIA NEVER AGAIN!
Never eva again lol

I love my g2x it was the phone i really wanted to get coming from a g1, but i settled for a mt4g first(also a great phone btw) Theres not really any other phone i would be interested in except maybe the epic 4g touch on sprint, but now that ive already decided not to go that route and wait to see what beasts of phones come out early to mid next year i have grown to appreciate my G2x even more since ICS will unlock all of our phones true potential and prolong its staying power.
I will admit some specs of the galaxy nexus are decent but the main dealbreaker for me is its no external sdcard. I feel like Samsung gimps the nexus line of phones so they can put most of their ideas and technology into their own galaxy s devices. The 1200x720 resolution display is awesome but i can achieve that as well on my g2x with lcd resolution or lcd density apps. HTC needs to make the next Nexus imho as they did the best job of all three so far.

This phone is just a misunderstood beast
If we had the proper support of source codes or drivers im sure this thing could of gone to the moon and back, but that's neither here nor there. In my experience and still to this day im glad i chose this phone. I probably be like others and really hate it if i had the reboot issues and etc though.

I got mine used about 2 months ago, and while I had some minor problems at the beginning, I wouldn't trade it for anything else in T-Mobiles lineup.

I like it much more after finding this website and flashing a rom. It has some sweet power, but LG's quality control is... lacking.
Not to hijack, but how long does cell phone hardware last? Does the cpu, internal memory, etc go after a year or 2 or should it work for a long time?
Well, the phone, hardware wise is great, and throw in a custom ROM and kernel, you're good!
I love this phone. And when ICS comes out it'll unlock even more potential.
i have no major complaints about this phone except for the fact that i have to restart it twice a day because it gets "bogged down" too quickly. i don't even use many apps so it should be able to handle my light usage a lot better. once i restart it, it's perfect for like the next twelve hours :|

cant use it as a phone lol
everything works great i get a slight popping sound in call drives me nuts brand new only used for 3 days so i use my nokia 3711 no reboots or or anything
To be honest, I liked my Nexus One better than this phone. Tech specs were (are?) beast when it first came out, but due to software limitations it's pretty much outdated at this point. Maybe I am hating on it too much but it's just not perfect in my opinion.
Bought mine in June and loved it! and currently, still loving it! im one of the Blessed few that got a perfectly working G2x out of the box minus (a instalock functioning GPS) which is now fixed thanks to the updated baseband. this phone is a SPEED demon. with all the necessary accessories to keep it cutting edge HDMI, 8MP Cam w/flash, FFC etc. i tend to go in and play with all the new "flagship" phones currently in the stores, and yet to see a phone that makes this phone look/feel "outdated" screen even still looks amazing even compared to the beastly SGSII. So the G2x is treating me AWESOME and im sure will continue to do so until my point of upgrade (if i even feel necessary to do so). Also special shout out to all the AMAZING developers that allow us to get a "new phone feel" with all the custom roms/ Themes and development etc.
Starting to appreciate it more. Wanted an htc amaze badly due to wanting to experience the sense ui. But after some comparing I would rather stick with this phone bcuz its perfect for me since running cm7 on it. Waiting for ics to blow my mind on this device. This phone is very underrated, I don't kno why but it is.
Tried the miui Rom and liked some of the features (mainly pop up texts that I can respond to without leaving a game or video) but switched to cm7 shortly after and am very satisfied. Phone doesn't lag anymore, runs smooth and I don't have to pull the battery out 4 to 5 times a day any more. In fact I may have to do it once or twice a week. I have a new fondness for my G2X now. Got it on 420 when they thought I was in line that morning for the sidekick lol. I may use this phone longer than ive ever used a phone before. Normally would switch every 4-6 months... almost did with the amaze 4g. But 500-600 bucks def not worth it.

I've had mine since late April and it's never let me down. I switched from a Galaxy S 4G, which I exchanged for the G2x, and I don't regret it one bit. This phone handles anything I throw at it with no problem. My GPS was basically broken until the new baseband update came out, now it locks in seconds. I've only had one random reboot since I've had the phone, and that was because I was messing with UV settings in SetCPU. I'm not looking to upgrade anytime soon.

Try using the handcent app, it does the popup feature as well. Usually for a 3D game like most Tegra 2 games it will take like five seconds to reload but you won't lose any progress.

Do you still get the same instant gps locks running bionix?
I came from a MyTouch 3G 32b. 528MHz processor, and 192mb of RAM... Talk about an upgrade!
No complaints at all. Came from an HD2 to this phone and it was worth it. Fastest android I've ever had.

Amazing phone! Came from an HD2 (which was also an amazing phone) and I'm just loving the speed in the G2x. I haven't had any dropped calls or random reboots.
