Cyanogenmod Stock Messaging with Delivery Notification and 160 characters - Android Apps and Games

First I 'd like to thank P4qui7o for his original thread here on modifying this app. I used ideas and resources from his project to make my own.
I have made a Cyanogen 2.3.4 mod of the Messaging Application (Mms.apk).
These changes where made in java code on the official Cyanogenmod source tree and compiled and not smali.
I 've tested it in Xperia and ZTE devices and works fine.
The extra features are:
* GSM Alphabet 160 character sms support and automatic conversion for
↳ Greek
↳ Czech
↳ Spanish
↳ French
↳ Polish
↳ Portuguese
↳ Slovak
↳ Turkish
Message is converted on Send and it is shown in the thread as it was sent.
* T9/X9 is not affected by typing and GSM conversion.
* Delivery Report Notification on Status Bar with sound (can be disabled from preferences)
* The Delivery Report sound is the Notification sound defined in System Settings, so it can be different than the Incoming SMS Alert Sound and can be distinguished.
* Vibration on Delivery Report when Status Bar notification is enabled (this can be disabled from preferences as well)
* Normal pop up (toast) notification on delivery report.
* Delivery reports show the exact phone number beside the Contact name and not only the description.
* Full timestamp on messages (not only date) (can be enabled from menu)
* Original Timestamp support that shows the exact sending date and not the received date on the sms.
* Custom Vibration pattern support for sms messages (through the menu)
* Vibration is defined from the Central System Settings and NOT the Messaging app anymore. (The original cyanogen vibrates according the application settings even if Vibration on System Settings is disabled)
* General Vibration Setting On/Off (only if central system vibration is on)
* Vibrate on Call (Only if Central Vibration AND Messaging Vibration are enabled)
* It does not convert SMS Messages to MMS when typing more than 3 sms's.
* Delivery reports and toast messages work on MMS messages as well.
* Bigger SMS Box when typing for less scrolling. This will take up as much as possible from the screen, growing when new lines are added so you don'nt have to scroll to see the sms. I 've set a maximum of 21 lines of expansion (this is roughly 3 sms in portrait).
* Pending status icon when message is pending.
* MyAvatar on top Conversation list
* Option to find Avatar Contact from specific Phone Number/Email (default is e-mail "[email protected]")
* Transparent skinned 2 style (white/black) conversations.
* Smaller timestamp fonts (relative to message font which can be set on options)
* Nicer emoticons and status icons
* Option to disable smilee key on keyboard.
* Option to hide all Avatars from Conversations
ChangeLog
* Changed Message Font Size to also change the Conversation List font size
Changelog:
* Changed default font size to 16 (18 is too big!)
* Fixed but to allow sending blank sms (you can now send an empty message with 1 space. (Send was disabled before).
ChangeLog 08/06/2012:
* Fixed bug to remove duplicate contacts when composing
* Fixed bug to find and add the correct contact names when typing numbers
* Added recipient Editor with checkboxes in seperate window to add remove Contacts without typing
Changelog 10/06/2012
* Added option to disable bubblechat and use older style
* Fixed bug when using original timestamps and sms replies are out of sync with server time
ChangeLog 17/06/2012
* ICS compatible Version!
* Added option to blink led for Messages
* Added Options to blink led, sound notification, show taskbar icon on Delivery Notifications.
Changelog 18/06/2012
* Delivery Report Notification Led option bugfix.
Changelog 19/06/2012
* Fixed Led notification problems
* Added avatars on MessageList (bubbles or not)
* Added seperate option for avatars on MessageList
* Fixed Message list layouts to increase bubble size
Latest version from here (Gingerbread AND ICS unified version)
com.lousou.mms_bubbles10.apk
Instructions:
- You can install this as a normal application although it will fail in some cases. You have to disable all notifications from any other Messaging application installed on your phone ( And the stock one installed ). It would be best to remove the stock Messaging Application using Root Uninstaller (Free from Market)
I have not tested on ICS but bug mentioned is that id does not find the Contact Names. I will build another version for ics, probably based on the latest Cyanogenmod Messaging for ICS.
If you like my work please
Screenshots Bubble version:

Great work my friend Well done Exactly what i was missing from the stock messaging application I have sent you a donation in order to show you my appreciation

Can you reupload somewhere or attach it here?
CLICK HERE for a quick IQ test

Looks promising, will download it and tell you later how it goes.
Thanks

I am thinking of addung sometging like sms popup with a choise and porting it to ICS.

Wow sounds good but cannot install it even if I uninstall the stock app with titanium. I'm on ics. Any idea? Any way to make a flashable zip? Thanks anyway!
Edit: ok I managed to install your version. Seems to be working. Only one strange thing, it does not fetch the names from the contacts for the threads, so there are only numbers and no contact names... And having the ics style would be great!

Yes I have noticed this bug in fetching Contacts, it is only happening in ics, it works fine on gingerbread. I will compile it for ice this week as well

You have to uninstall your current system messaging app with root uninstaller (keep backup) then it is regular install. I will fix that as well soon
[EDIT]
I have updated the first post. The new version can be installed as a normal application without having to remove the internal stock.
You should disable the notifications from the stock Messaging app if you choose not to install it.

Paid plugin (removes advertising screen displayed once per 3 days):

Hints / Limitations:
* HTC Desire with stock ROM - how to fix LED blinking (let us know if it works for other phones with similar problem)
- On stock ROM, LED blinking will stop in about 5 mins after text message arrives. To workaround that we have added refresh during reminders. Simply, set reminders to a period of 5 mins to keep the led on. Btw, you can have reminders 'on' without need to set further Sound, Vibration, Turn on Display.
* LED colors / LED blink rate
- Your phone / rom needs to support that in a way it's accessible via standard Android API (android.app.Notification), otherwise the options won't work for you.
- We know that other programs may use some sort of workarounds and other tricks, but currently we don't have any plans to implement that.
* On-screen message visible when the phone is locked (in a sleep mode).
- Currently, not possible. To introduce that, it would mean to play with the Keyguard functionality in Android API which we are not sure we wanna do. Maybe in the future ... on TODO list.
- You could maybe try some other 3rd party apps which implements their own lock screen. Let us know here if you find something which works together with SMS Notifier.
From v1.5:
*NEW* The most wanted functions are here - Quick reply, Delete, Mark as read right from interactive popup
*NEW* If you don't like Ads or the Thank You screen or just wish to support us, please, consider buying SMS Notifier PREMIUM from our website
*NEW* Now requires Android OS 1.6+
From v1.4.2:
*FIX* fixed SE X10 notification issue
*NEW* click on the picture in interactive popup allows to call the sender
*NEW* possibility to change text color for popup
*NEW* time of received message in interactive popup
From v1.4.1:
*FIX* notification sound issues
*FIX* problem with different screen densities
*NEW* added support for Samsung Galaxy Tab
From v1.4:
*NEW* optional interactive on-screen message preview (popup)
From v1.3.1:
* Few minor fixes and new additional notification icons
From v1.3:
*NEW* privacy level now affects also on-screen preview and notification text in pulldown menu
*NEW* option to use different notification sound for reminders
*NEW* option to keep LED turned on (no blinking) - This needs to be supported by your phone HW / SW (ROM) in order to work
*NEW* option to enable/disable sound and vibration notifications during call
From v1.2.1:
* Few minor fixes and new app launcher icon
From v1.2:
*FIX* resolving contacts issue on Android 2.0+
*FIX* force close on background color selector
*NEW* option to display contact photo in on-screen preview
*NEW* changed on-screen preview icon
*NEW* more on-screen preview positions
From v1.1:
*FIX* audio issues (was probably bugged only on Droid and Droid X)
*NEW* option to customize background color (incl. transparency) of on-screen preview
*NEW* customizable position of on-screen preview
*NEW* added default Android notification icon
Features:
* shows number of unread messages in a notification bar
* adjustable level of privacy (no sender name or message text if you select)
* customizable sound, vibration and LED notifications
* possibility to change icon in a notification bar
* on-screen preview of new incoming messages
* notification reminder system
* quiet hours feature
* designed for a low battery consumption
* and more

Nice little app that I would theme immediatelly !
Would be nice to have it in Android style..why using different icons? So it fits better..and missing the smilies
For example, I use only froyos default sms app and would like to use kind of a pop up plugin that fits and does not look like a different sms app.
greets
Edit: just did a quick edit...think I will keep this app now, looks like buid in..
I am curios how you gonna continue with this app..looking forward!!!
Hi rori,
Glad you like it.
I think we can add that default icon in the next update - need to double check the licensing first.
We have some plans for usability improvements and also some more eye-candy for the future releases.
Looking forward to more theming screenshots
Have a nice weekend.
And why not adding a text box that it allows us to make a reply ? Just like ChompSMS or Handcent or SMSPopup!
So far it is working great on my Samsung Moment. Thank you.
@aladin6:
There are two ways how to process an incoming message:
1) Let user just read a message (even if notification bar is not visible) with no interruption of whatever doing (watching a movie, playing a game,...).
This is implemented in SMS Notifier. We have missed this feature a lot in other sms applications and this is also one of the reasons why we have developed our own.
2) Interrupt running activity and force user to do some action ("popup").
This is considered for implementantion in the future, but it is not top priority at this moment.

Dont waste your time on your own UI....you just make a great app that fits to default and we have a feeling it is not a third party app, that´s all.
Dekuji moc, pozdrav!
Version 1.1 hits the market.
*FIX* audio issues (was probably bugged only on Droid and Droid X)
*NEW* option to customize background color (incl. transparency of on-screen preview)
*NEW* customizable position of on-screen preview
*NEW* added default Android notification icon
Also adding some hints to main post.

Regarding that icon in on-screen preview... wait for the next update where we will rework that part quite significantly. We believe you will like it
On another note, any Droid / X / 2 users? We're getting some strange reports regarding notification LED functionality. Could anybody with that phone(s) and using SMS Notifier describe us if it works for him as expected or what are the problems?
Basically, we are using native Android API for LED functionality and for example on HTC Desire we don't see any issues.
Superb app!! I am not sure if its a bug with HTC Desire (been using rooted stock for some time) but choosing LED color is not working

Thanks for the note. Correct. At least on Desire we don't see how to make it through Android API. Heard something about you need rooted device and work with charging LED. It's just black magic.

When using the test function on the app itself the notification appears.
Just not when I turn the screen of and then get an sms..
Still, A great app

Please make this an option if you go this route - I really hate having all those buttons and whatnot all over the screen. I like the idea of just a simple popup - click on it it to reply. I would like to see something like "2 other unread messages" somewhere else (if it doesn't already do this... I just installed it.)
Love the app - it just replaced SMS Popup on my EVO.
Quick question: in the OP the pop-up takes up the whole bottom third of the screen. On mine it just takes up a bit of each corner (or a bit in the center of the screen.) How do I get it to take up the whole width of the screen?

Rooted Epic 4G
Bubbys AOSP v 0.2

LED notification is not working, same problem I think as some other applications (like modified sms.apk from cyanogenmod)
anyone else? any fix?

[APP][1.31][Oct 27th] Ghostly SMS: never lose an SMS anymore!

****
2014-10-27 Long (and overdue) update supporting KitKat and later.
I'm amazed that even newer devices running KitKat with lots of RAM (Samsung Galaxy S3!) suffer from the bug!!
****
Hi,
there have been rumors of Gingerbread losing some SMS messages and -guess what- they weren't rumors at all. :| There's a real bug somewhere in the SMS/MMS app for Gingerbread so that if it gets killed due to low RAM, it doesn't store the SMS and you lose it without even knowing it was received. And as people asked me to support FroYo and Eclair, it looks like the bug is more widespread than initially thought...
This is especially true on devices with low RAM to start with, as my poor and loved G1.
Worry no more, until Google fixes the issue (and somebody pushes it to your cooked ROM) I have made this app. It's just meant to be a workaround and what does it do?
This app listens for incoming SMSs, saves them as fast as it can in an internal database (not the INBOX) and shows a notification. In order to be fast, no contact name lookup is done in before the notification: as soon as the message is received, it's saved as-is.
If you receive a notification from this app, but not from the stock SMS/MMS app (screenshot #2), open the activity, read your lost message and -if you wish- you can move it to your INBOX to store it or reply to it.
If you don't want to move it to the INBOX or if the stock SMS/MMS app didn't lose the message (screenshot #1 and... good for you, by the way!), you can safely delete it from the internal database: no message from the INBOX is EVER deleted.
If this app helps you recover a precious message you didn't want lost, consider a small donation as a token of appreciation
Translations: thanks to GetLocalization.com, translating the app is now easy and doesn't require any technical skill. Their web interface allows you to translate even just parts of the app. Want to see Ghostly SMS in your own language? Now you can.
Permissions:
- SMS permissions are needed to write to the INBOX.
- Read contacts is needed to show the contact name in the list.
- Vibrating is needed to... vibrate on SMS received.
- Internet/Network is needed to show Ads. No other network communication is done.
- Billing permission is needed for donations. Donations will unlock two optional features (Remove Ads and Use delayed notification) and will increase your karma.
The app can be downloaded for free from Google Play.
Compatibility with other messaging apps
There are some messaging apps which can automatically disable Ghostly SMS (or any other SMS receiving app, such as alarm receivers and so on).
If you use Go SMS! Pro make sure that you leave the following option UNCHECKED: Settings > Receive settings > Disable other message notification
If you use Handcent SMS, update to 4.6.3 (or above) and then go to Settings -> Application Settings -> Lower Priority. Make sure it is CHECKED.
Delayed Notification HOWTO
If you enable this option, when a SMS is received, Ghostly will save it in its internal DB, then it will wait as may seconds as you set up the "Delay (in seconds)" value. The default is 20 seconds, it should be enough for almost everybody but you can try and increase it as you see fit.
Once the delay is over, Ghostly will search the INBOX for a message from the same address and with almost the same "sent date". It will broaden the search with the value set up as "Time accuracy (in milliseconds)". 500 ms should be enough, but you can try increasing it if you keep getting double notifications. On my Desire Z running CyanogenMod 7.0 I need 1200 ms.
Why is a "accuracy" needed? Because (sadly) Android doesn't use the sent-date to store the message, but the local time/date when the SMS/MMS app processed the message. This means some kind of tolerance is needed.
If you enable the "Use sent date" in Ghostly SMS and in the stock SMS app, you should not need accuracy at all. Only do it if your SMS app has the option to save the "message sent date". Enable the GMT correction if you see a date which is wrong exactly the amount of hours you differ from GMT (only if your stock SMS app does the same!).
Donations
Since 1.12, Ghostly supports In-app donations. If you donate, you will unlock two optional features (read above for details). Once you click on an icon, you'll be prompted w/ the classic Android Market interface where you can choose to confirm or refuse the donation.
This way, once you donate, the features will be unlocked forever, even if you wipe your phone, since they'll be tied to your Android Market account. Just open the main screen, hit MENU and select "Donations". The app will synchronize with the Market and restore your donation information.
Thank you!

Thank you might. Do you think the ad's will slow the app down so it could possibly lose messages, too?
The beta version you posted within the eZGinger thread worked very well for me up to now, testing your new version from now on.

Absolutely NOT!
It would mean shooting myself in the foot, since I use the same version that's in the market.
Ads are shown only in the screen you use to check/read the messages. It's the same reason that contact name lookup is done there but not on the notification (although the code allows to safely put it there too...)

While writing this very message I lost an SMS! Luckily the app caught it. Now I've seen that there's a "bug" with long messages, which the stock app merges into one, while my app keeps split. I've looked at the code of the stock app, at the SDK and I don't think I can add it without big changes in the code that I don't like (those very changes, not big changes in general).
Please ignore - I was using an outdated version

Is the problem with the lost sms only in the stock sms app?

Could you make this app aviable for 2.2? I've got this bug on some Froyo roms.

I thought that the bug was introduced with Gingerbread (hence the name of the app) but I see that half of the market downloads come from FroYo ROMs... which puzzles me, since I've set API 9 as the minimum supported API. How can they download it?
Are you sure you are suffering from the same bug?
This poses an even bigger problem: how do I rename this app if I add support for FroYo?

I just tried your app and it really works! I had the problem with receiving messages in stock froyo.
But I have 2 questions.
When I receive sms when my sms app works fine I have two notifications in status bar. One from stock sms app, one from your app. Is it possible to notify that my sms was recovered only when my sms app has been killed due to low free ram?
There should be only one notification. From sms app or your app. Depending which app received message.
Second question is why don't you just modify android sms application if you know where is the problem and how to resolve that?

That's bad, I cannot call it "Gingerbread Ghostly SMS" anymore!

Unfortunately it's not possible, because of how Android handles notifications. Every messaging app is called at the same time (more or less) and no app knows the existence of the others. The only way to show a single notification is to "steal" the SMS so that the Stock app never receives it. I'd never do that.

Because then I could not put ads there! Seriously: fixing the issue in the stock app requires a lot of work, with no way to know if Google will accept the changes. And that would be a waste of time. I hope they do fix the bug themselves, then I'll retire the app

They will not fix the bug themselves. They didn't fix that in 2.1. They didn't fix that in 2.2. They even didn't fix that in 2.3...
Fix this issue in stock app, add your ads and then throw it to the market!
yeah this would be awesome. Maybe you could fix it in Cyanogenmod repos.

Are you sure about that? Do you have any proof? Don't get me wrong, I am not picking on you, it's that roalex's COS (Cyanogenmod Open Source) ROM suffers from the bug. So if CM has fixed it, it should be fixed in COS too.

More to come.
No froyo is definately out of the question.
any changes in layout?
I have Sony wt19a and led blinking not fixed.... Thanks for your good work
Edit: okay i fixed it, the first time i download it is was in sdcard then i moved to the internal card.
Please try to be specific on errors and test problems thoroughly so I can find where the problem is.
I have a new version for you. I am not dealing with the layout right now.
I want to finish the led colors and add a sound reminder on specific interval's is someone wants.
New version
Changelog: 22/06/2012
* Added multi-led color support (red for errors, green for sms/mms, blue for delivery report)
The leds now can blink 2 or 3 colors changing one after another according to pending notifications. They are not cancelled until you clear the notifications or open the App.
As I have mentioned not all devices can use the color option. If you don't see the colors uncheck the Led Colors option.
Download and test (first post)
This works fine on my Sony NeoV so it must at least work ok on all Xperia roms.
I do not have time to update the screenshots right now.
If anyone wishing to do so please do.
Thank you.
TODO list:
- color picker for leds
- sound or vibration reminder after interval
- quick reply popup
- custom font colors for white/black bg
- custom buckground image for white/black

This is great, thank you so much!
I would like the reminder option, please.
I am running this on a ported CM9/ICS for a very simple Optimus S phone, and this gives me the option for a nice mms app. The others are too big for this little thing.
I just found this thread this morning, installed 12 and now 13. I use Titanium Backup and it does not recognize the new version 13, it just shows Messaging 2.3.4, so new version will not backup as new.

It's in the res/values/colors.xml
Code:
<color name="text_color_inc">#ff000000</color>
<color name="text_color_out">#ffffffff</color>
<color name="text_color_black_inc">#ff000000</color>
<color name="text_color_black_out">#ffffffff</color>

Hmm that would be difficult to fix. For the T9 to work I have to do the conversion to 160 when Send button is pushed, so if I show the real count before the conversion it would be 70 for all languages... It should be ok in version 14. I fixed it. Please test and let me know.
Thank you.
Changelog 23/06/2012
* Added option to change Led notification Colors!
I didn't write a color picker, you have to define colors in format #AlphaRedGreenBlue or without Alpha (#RRGGBB/#AARRGGBB) where Alpha is transparency and is always ff if you want solid colors.
(example #ffff0000 or #ff0000 is red color). You can use some aliases too
'red', 'blue', 'green', 'black', 'white', 'gray', 'cyan', 'magenta', 'yellow', 'lightgray', 'darkgray'
Those are it according to documentation. Version 14 test and enjoy!
* Fixed Message counter for non GSM characters

require mms.apk in system/app folder?
Hi there,
Does this app require that MMS.APK and MMS.ODEX life in system/app folder?
I'm running a custom 4.1.2 ROM and MMS wound't send or receive (stock and handcent work ok though).
Thanks for your help
EDIT: Sprint's Touchwiz has SecMMS.apk and it is in system/app folder. (if that helps)
EDIT2: here is a logcat file, near the end of it I was attempting to send a picture. https://www.dropbox.com/s/kctttjj7h4wjlxb/alogcat.2013-10-23-18-42-31-0400.txt
MMS not sending. When I attach a photo, click send, I see a tiny mail icon with arrow pointing up direction continuously and photo does not get sent.
HTC One, 4.3
