[APP][1.31][Oct 27th] Ghostly SMS: never lose an SMS anymore! - Android Apps and Games

****
2014-10-27 Long (and overdue) update supporting KitKat and later.
I'm amazed that even newer devices running KitKat with lots of RAM (Samsung Galaxy S3!) suffer from the bug!!
****
Hi,
there have been rumors of Gingerbread losing some SMS messages and -guess what- they weren't rumors at all. :| There's a real bug somewhere in the SMS/MMS app for Gingerbread so that if it gets killed due to low RAM, it doesn't store the SMS and you lose it without even knowing it was received. And as people asked me to support FroYo and Eclair, it looks like the bug is more widespread than initially thought...
This is especially true on devices with low RAM to start with, as my poor and loved G1.
Worry no more, until Google fixes the issue (and somebody pushes it to your cooked ROM) I have made this app. It's just meant to be a workaround and what does it do?
This app listens for incoming SMSs, saves them as fast as it can in an internal database (not the INBOX) and shows a notification. In order to be fast, no contact name lookup is done in before the notification: as soon as the message is received, it's saved as-is.
If you receive a notification from this app, but not from the stock SMS/MMS app (screenshot #2), open the activity, read your lost message and -if you wish- you can move it to your INBOX to store it or reply to it.
If you don't want to move it to the INBOX or if the stock SMS/MMS app didn't lose the message (screenshot #1 and... good for you, by the way!), you can safely delete it from the internal database: no message from the INBOX is EVER deleted.
If this app helps you recover a precious message you didn't want lost, consider a small donation as a token of appreciation
Translations: thanks to GetLocalization.com, translating the app is now easy and doesn't require any technical skill. Their web interface allows you to translate even just parts of the app. Want to see Ghostly SMS in your own language? Now you can.
Permissions:
- SMS permissions are needed to write to the INBOX.
- Read contacts is needed to show the contact name in the list.
- Vibrating is needed to... vibrate on SMS received.
- Internet/Network is needed to show Ads. No other network communication is done.
- Billing permission is needed for donations. Donations will unlock two optional features (Remove Ads and Use delayed notification) and will increase your karma.
The app can be downloaded for free from Google Play.
Compatibility with other messaging apps
There are some messaging apps which can automatically disable Ghostly SMS (or any other SMS receiving app, such as alarm receivers and so on).
If you use Go SMS! Pro make sure that you leave the following option UNCHECKED: Settings > Receive settings > Disable other message notification
If you use Handcent SMS, update to 4.6.3 (or above) and then go to Settings -> Application Settings -> Lower Priority. Make sure it is CHECKED.
Delayed Notification HOWTO
If you enable this option, when a SMS is received, Ghostly will save it in its internal DB, then it will wait as may seconds as you set up the "Delay (in seconds)" value. The default is 20 seconds, it should be enough for almost everybody but you can try and increase it as you see fit.
Once the delay is over, Ghostly will search the INBOX for a message from the same address and with almost the same "sent date". It will broaden the search with the value set up as "Time accuracy (in milliseconds)". 500 ms should be enough, but you can try increasing it if you keep getting double notifications. On my Desire Z running CyanogenMod 7.0 I need 1200 ms.
Why is a "accuracy" needed? Because (sadly) Android doesn't use the sent-date to store the message, but the local time/date when the SMS/MMS app processed the message. This means some kind of tolerance is needed.
If you enable the "Use sent date" in Ghostly SMS and in the stock SMS app, you should not need accuracy at all. Only do it if your SMS app has the option to save the "message sent date". Enable the GMT correction if you see a date which is wrong exactly the amount of hours you differ from GMT (only if your stock SMS app does the same!).
Donations
Since 1.12, Ghostly supports In-app donations. If you donate, you will unlock two optional features (read above for details). Once you click on an icon, you'll be prompted w/ the classic Android Market interface where you can choose to confirm or refuse the donation.
This way, once you donate, the features will be unlocked forever, even if you wipe your phone, since they'll be tied to your Android Market account. Just open the main screen, hit MENU and select "Donations". The app will synchronize with the Market and restore your donation information.
Thank you!

Thank you might. Do you think the ad's will slow the app down so it could possibly lose messages, too?
The beta version you posted within the eZGinger thread worked very well for me up to now, testing your new version from now on.

Absolutely NOT!
It would mean shooting myself in the foot, since I use the same version that's in the market.
Ads are shown only in the screen you use to check/read the messages. It's the same reason that contact name lookup is done there but not on the notification (although the code allows to safely put it there too...)

While writing this very message I lost an SMS! Luckily the app caught it. Now I've seen that there's a "bug" with long messages, which the stock app merges into one, while my app keeps split. I've looked at the code of the stock app, at the SDK and I don't think I can add it without big changes in the code that I don't like (those very changes, not big changes in general).

Please ignore - I was using an outdated version

New release on the Market.

Is the problem with the lost sms only in the stock sms app?

Could you make this app aviable for 2.2? I've got this bug on some Froyo roms.

I thought that the bug was introduced with Gingerbread (hence the name of the app) but I see that half of the market downloads come from FroYo ROMs... which puzzles me, since I've set API 9 as the minimum supported API. How can they download it?
Are you sure you are suffering from the same bug?
This poses an even bigger problem: how do I rename this app if I add support for FroYo?

I just tried your app and it really works! I had the problem with receiving messages in stock froyo.
But I have 2 questions.
When I receive sms when my sms app works fine I have two notifications in status bar. One from stock sms app, one from your app. Is it possible to notify that my sms was recovered only when my sms app has been killed due to low free ram?
There should be only one notification. From sms app or your app. Depending which app received message.
Second question is why don't you just modify android sms application if you know where is the problem and how to resolve that?

That's bad, I cannot call it "Gingerbread Ghostly SMS" anymore!

Unfortunately it's not possible, because of how Android handles notifications. Every messaging app is called at the same time (more or less) and no app knows the existence of the others. The only way to show a single notification is to "steal" the SMS so that the Stock app never receives it. I'd never do that.

Because then I could not put ads there! Seriously: fixing the issue in the stock app requires a lot of work, with no way to know if Google will accept the changes. And that would be a waste of time. I hope they do fix the bug themselves, then I'll retire the app

They will not fix the bug themselves. They didn't fix that in 2.1. They didn't fix that in 2.2. They even didn't fix that in 2.3...
Fix this issue in stock app, add your ads and then throw it to the market!

yeah this would be awesome. Maybe you could fix it in Cyanogenmod repos.

Are you sure about that? Do you have any proof? Don't get me wrong, I am not picking on you, it's that roalex's COS (Cyanogenmod Open Source) ROM suffers from the bug. So if CM has fixed it, it should be fixed in COS too.

So, I think it will be available in the mid of the next week if you are interested.

Now for me the first priority is auto sync and sync of pictures, but after that I'll surely implement a widget (but, maybe in pro version).
What do you like to include in such widget? A list of articles (for selected feed, category) or texts?
Thank you both for the feedback!

Thank you for your job, it's a great lightweight app!
I use it as my everyday reader for 1 week, so far so good.
I'll wait for the auto sync but actually I don't really need it!
Thank you very much
Thank you very much for your response.
I'll try to make it even better!
Here is the new version with auto sync!
1.0.beta3 was not very stable.
So, check out quick fix!
1.0.rc1 is much more stable now.
Also, you can just download JustReader from Android Market!
Hi everybody!
I've just implemented downloading of the images (view images offline). Do you want to try it?
If so, check out this version!
It's not very stable, but you can try and write here what you think.
It can be switched on in account preferences screen.
Next things I would like to implement are:
- possibility to stop synchronization process
- show synchronization status in notification bar

What about Google Reader by Google?
What do you think about new Google Reader for Android released by Google?
Do you think they will implement full offline support?
Do you like this new app? Why?
Just downloaded market version, and a few quick thoughts (I'll have more later)
Sync settings:
Maximal age of the post should be Maximum
you list a bunch of numbers in that catergory. I'm assuming they are days, but weeks would also be a possibility. If you could put 1 (unit), 2 (unit), that'd be great.
Main feed page:
I use folders a LOT in google reader. Usually, I browse by the whole folder at once, rather than the individual source (example, I might have android police, Android Central, and XDA portal for android all in one folder). However, in this app, I can only view by individual feed. If you can place an option under the folder menu to view all at once, that'd be great! By this I mean, I might be viewing an Android central story, but the next story might be XDA portal.
Edit: Just found if you tap the numbers it does this. If you can make that a menu option, that'd be great. I only found it by accident.
Overall:
You have a setting for article screen theme. Any way you can make that universal throughout the app? I like black text on white. However, everything but the article is still white text on black.
Make it so that articles that are read in app are read everywhere.
That's all for now. Looks really good so far. Love the swipe to go to next page option. Google official reader needed that. For what I think of googles reader app, I really like it. Nice UI, but no offline caching.

Hi!
Thank you very much for some suggestions!
What do you mean by phrase on top of this post?
Statuses are saved to Google servers each time you synchronize account.
You mean "instantly"? Right when you are reading?

+1. Also, PM

I think a widget would be a great idea. I see you are planning to add it in the future and you were asking what to be included. I think the best way to do the widget would be to display "all items" that would link to your app when clicked. I also would like to see a mark all as read on the widget too if that can be done.
I'll implement widget for sure, but a little bit later. Now the main priority is stability.
Now, you can try one more beta version:
better offline support
bugfixes
some synchronization performance improvements
1.0 version is out

Thank you

I would like to thank you for using JustReader and make a little present - JustReader pro.
Send me PMs with your google reader account name (usually your gmail) and I'll send you pro version for your account.
Hi everybody!

-present version works fully like pro version

- Missed calls viewer
- You can ALWAYS go back to the default phone interface during a call, simply by pressing the phone "Back" while on a call

Getting Started and Important Notes
- To use the dialpad and other in-call functions, press the "Back" button on a call to bring up the default phone interface! Due to security restrictions imposed by Google, it's impossible for me to provide a working dialer during an ongoing non-VoIP call.
- In version V5.0.0 and upwards, the model of the free version changed due to userbase request. Almost all functions are available, but there is a personalizable contact limit.

- Fixed issue in phone syncing for ICS builds, where pictures could be assigned to wrong contacts
- Optimized memory usage on image editing: should fix the issue for rare FCs when rotating images
- Improved facebook picture fetching, possibly fixing rare cases where contact pictures were not being downloaded
- Several optimizations on phone syncing code
- Improved theming capabilities: look for new theme "Snow White"
- Several minor bugfixes
V 4.0.0
- New: Reject call with SMS. Only accessible with swipe gesture, to keep the interface clean.
- New: Ultimate SMS Screen can flip through all your SMS messages. Only accessible with swipe gesture
- Swipe actions are now fully configurable
- In calls, any swipe can be configured to reject, answer, reject with SMS, and default phone interface.
- In SMS, any swipe can be configured to dismiss, reply to the SMS, view previous and view next SMS
- Portuguese translation
- German translation
V 2.2.0
- Added Rotate function to Picture Editor
- Launch the Contact Manager directly from your app drawer
- New option to force UCS to ignore answer/reject button presses, and only react to long presses (press and hold the button, avoids accidental pickup/hangup)
- Licensed Users: Added capability to set different default themes, as well as independent hiding of callscreen elements, for known and unknown callers
- Free Users: Can selectively hide callscreen elements for unknown callers only
V 1.4.0
- You can hide parts of the callscreen, like buttons and backgrounds.
- You can set different default HD default pictures for Unknown contacts.
- (Licensed) You can apply different themes per-contact. With a transparent theme and swipe gestures, you can achieve true fullscreen for selected contacts.
- Fixed issue where UCS would sometimes not show on calls
- Rearranged UCS preferences into sub-menus.
- Added a "Tips and Tricks" section to preferences.
V 1.2.4
- fixed the issue where some people would get the status bar cover part of the caller name. There should be no fullscreen issues now.
- When you press back on Contact Manager or Theme Manager, you will now go back to UCS Preferences (would exit UCS before)
- Remember position on contact list: when you exit a detailed contact view, the list will start from that contact, not from the beginning. (yes, was annoying)
- Press visual feedback on UCS buttons (change color when pressed)
V 1.2.3
- Option to show on-screen "set on loudspeaker" button
- Option to show/hide status bar on lockscreen: people with problems where the status bar shows anyway, and hides part of the caller ID, set this OFF as a workaround!
- Option to give haptic feedback (vibrate) on UCS key presses
- FIX: Hopefully motorola people will stop having FCs when saving pictures
- Optimized memory footprint
- Removed unnecessary "save" option after saving an image on the editor
V 1.2.0
- Added theming capability, and a Theme Manager, for Licensed users only! Search for "UCS Suave theme" in google play to see it in action, and I will be doing a lot more themes in the near future.
- Changed answer/call buttons for a more polished look.
- Fixed issues with rare random crashes while viewing detailed contact info.
V 1.1.0:
- Removed restriction on editing pictures only on portrait, it now serves as simple rotate feature: turn the phone to landscape when editing pictures, and on saving, UCS will rotate the visible area to portrait. So UCS still shows exactly what you cropped and are seeing, plus it rotated the original image.
- Fixed race condition that lead to a very "rare" FC (thanks to whoever reported the crash to google play)
- Changed application icon
V 1.0.1:
- Restrict image editing and cropping to portrait mode to avoid FC until I rework it
V 1.0.0:
- Initial release
Theming guide
This is a tutorial on how to build themes for UCS. You will need the Android SDK and Eclipse installed and setup.
I provide an Eclipse project which you can use as base and example to give you a quick startup. Note that there are other ways to do this without eclipse, but I won't get into that. But it is not enough to open the apk and just drop images into there (unless you decompile it, recompile it, and sign it). Well, at least not enough to use the full power of the theming engine: you won't be able to change text size, element position, and other stuff without recompiling.
Take the attached eclipse project and import it. (please don't ask how to do this, there are numerous tutorials on how to setup eclipse/android SDK, and that is not the purpose of this post/thread).
Template Eclipse Project: View attachment UCS_Template_Theme.1.0.0.tar.gz
Alternatively, here is the compiled apk from the project above: View attachment UCS_Template_Theme.1.0.0.apk
The apk is useful if you just want to change some images, and also if you use some of the toolkits around here in xda to decompile/compile apks. In fact, you don't actually need Eclipse to completely change the template: use something like ApkManager, and just decompile the apk.
The theming does not involve java programming, that's why it works so nice with a decompiler: no smali editing. All you need for theming is replacing drawables, and editing xml files.
When starting, take a look at the files in:
res/drawables/
res/values/
The xml files in the drawables folder point to the actual images in /res/drawable-hdpi, and those are what you want to change
The xml files in res/values control everything from text color to element placing. Take special attention to integers.xml, I inserted comments on it to make clearer what every key does.
Play around with this, run it with the "run as android application" command with your phone connected to your PC if you're using Eclipse. Getting the offsets just the way you wanto to can be tricky.
When you're done, just export as signed application and share it here if you feel like it!
Cheers
As always....brilliant.....

Great work like ever, tried it on latest reaper and it will become my default call screen
Great work lowveld! Using it on reaper now, but just to clarify, if i want to turn on speaker and so on I have to go back to the default one?
I don't know how you do it, you're way to talented dude
Cheers!

Yep, I believe that you must hit the back button to return to normal dialer and then enable speaker from there.
Great. Will check it on my sgsii und give you feedback

No, just activate the "turn to speaker" feature. During a call, just turn the phone screen down!

earlier failure to post was obviously a tapatalk (xda app) issue. Already loving this application....
Is it too early for future functionality requests?
Please incorporate a backup and restore option, so that the custom linkages and pictures can be saved across ROMs. In the meantime how can I manually backup these, will titanium do? or is there an SD card directory?

You can safely backup with titanium and restore to the same rom with no issues. Across roms you can't do that, because the internal android contact database changes.
Its never too early for requests, ill try to figure out a way around this!

One thing i would like to see on ucs is the ability to rotate the pictures, if I'm allowed to make a feature request.
I came across this, because i have a picture i rotated myself at the gallery, but if i import it to ucs it isn't rotated, i know it can easily be solved with another app, but it would be nice if ucs takes to rotation from gallery or if i would be able to rotate it myself.

Ben, let me rephrase my earlier answer: if you use titanium to restore both the contacts database and UCS, when restoring both to another rom all should be ok with UCS internal contact mapping. But you know how I feel about restoring system data across roms, so I'll try to come up with a better solution.

Hey mate!
Well, I will surely look into this. Plus, your request lead me to identify the first bug in ICS, and I just uploaded version V1.0.1 because of you, so thanks for that! (the bug was that if you tried using the image editor/cropper on landscape mode, it would FC on saving the image).
But I got a bit confused about your "maybe to crop them" part of the request. Currently you can zoom in and out of any picture, move it around, and when saving, UCS will crop the image to what is showing on the screen (minus the buttons of course). You can use either the in-screen zoom buttons, or regular multi-touch (pinch to zoom), and simple dragging to move the picture around.
Maybe I wasn't clear enough about this before...
Cheers
Excellent, a new version
In response to the rotate request, it's +1 that world be really useful
Crop not needed, as you said already multi touch, although it would be good if when you're on the resize image screen, if there were lines at the top and bottom of the screen indicating the size that the image has to be stretched to, as I like the top and bottom that show the calling number and buttons not to also have the image behind (hope that makes sense).

backup/restore question
Does the UCS app make and store a copy of the edited pictures or simply keep a link to the original pictures?
As, I've created a new directory on my sd card simply for my UCS pictures, so could any backup function you create simply map the existing contacts to their UCS contact picture file path, it would be incredible if it would also remember the sizing settings for each image.

Hey,
Yeah, I think I got what you meant. Showing guidelines to tell the user where the caller ID interface elements will actually show would be possible, I guess. But it would be a pain for you to align the picture. Actually I never thought that it could be used that way (with black headers and footers instead of fullscreen pic).
Anyway, what about a compromise meanwhile: I give the option to instead of those semi-transparent rectangles that show beneath the buttons and contact numbers/names, paint it black. What do you think? The end result will be what you want, I guess, but you should scale the images to fullscreen, and sort of guess where the black will be.
The reason I'm reluctant to add guidelines or whatever to the cropper, is because I'm trying to figure out a way to let the user change the position of those elements on the call screen, and it would become inconsistent on that case. Ok, I'm rambling now...
Cheers

UCS saves the final cropped image you assign to a contact, and that's the one that will be used from there on. You can even delete the original, no harm done.
There's no need for you to create another backup dir on the sdcard: the saved files are on the app own directory, and will be saved by Titanium backup. If you still want to keep sort of a catalog of what you use, so clean installs of UCS on other roms go faster, just copy the .jpg files from /data/data/com.lowveld.ucs/files
Mapping the picture to contacts is a different matter, and the main difficulty regarding a save/restore functionality. I'll have to really think hard on how to achieve this...
Cheers, and thanks for the input!
On thinking about it, forget about guidelines, just don't make the backgrounds at the top and bottom of the screen semi transparent, if possible make this colour/transparency configurable through options? I'd prefer none so you gave full screen pictures, with number and buttons simply overlaid, you could even have the colour of the text of the calling number configurable

[APP] [GB][ICS][JB] High Resolution Google Contacts Photos (in stock contacts app)

Native Google contacts app uses a strangely lower resolution (96x96px).
This was normal in the firsts Android versions.
The new phones includes a large amount of memory and a large screens, and also, the new Android version (Ice Cream Sandwitch) predisposes to a better user experience.
But, by default, the contact photos stored in Android 4.0 uses the older resolution (96x96px), and the photo contacts appears pixelated.
With this app you can make a bulk update of your contact photos to a increased resolution (256x256px) that's shows much better in your new devices.
Also, in older devices, that aren't running ICS, the app allows to make a bulk photo contacts update and increase the resolution to the device max supported size.
Finally, if you have rooted your device, you can increase the size of the contact photos to 400x400px (or more). That sounds good in devices with a large screen, like Galaxy Note.
Instructions
1) Place the desired contact photos (in PNG or JPG format) in a folder of your sdcard. I recommend to use square photos.
2) Open the app
3) Click settings and configure the sources folder to the stored photos folder
4) Go main window in the app
5) Select the photos that you want to update
6) Click the update photos button (the photos was automatically resized to the max resolution supported by the device).
* If you want to use photos greater than the maximum supported device size, you need to be rooted. If you're rooted, go
settings, check the "Use HD photos" checkbox then apply the desired photos.
Please, if you have troubles or issues, contact with the developers via email or at the XDA thread.
Requirements
For real HD photos you need to be rooted and, in stock ROMs, you need to install busybox (available in Play Store).

Known problems
In Gingerbread devices the HD real photos (bigger than 256x256px) isn't supported
Weird Google hasn't come with an update on this low res problem. It's been known for years. Now even with HD screen resolutions Google doesn't fix this :-(
I use a similar solution to yours. I use the internal Phone book in my Galaxy S2 to create duplicate contacts with only a single high res image. After this I merge the contacts using settings with my GMail contacts, setting the high res picture as default profile.
This causes two problems though. One, it doesn't change anything on my Google contacts so it only works on my phone. Second, you have to apply this trick every time you get a new phone.
Would be nice if your application could do something similar but with some sort of simple import/export function. But I'm afraid that's not that simple, right?
I love the idea, but get "At least one of the selected photos can't be applied" when trying to apply. Image is 300px in height, named the same as the contact and in .png format.
Am I doing something obviously wrong?

you have a log file in /sdcard/
open and find a contact with error code different from zero.
if the error is due to a contact picture had not previously assigned, the error will be corrected in the next version.
also, appreciate a logcat

hi,
the filename (without the extension) of any photo is the display name for two or more contacts (correct me if I wrong)
You are quite correct, it was a contact that had been joined - tried it on an un-joined contact and it worked like a charm!
Thanks for a good app and great help.
