[How To] Retrieve MSL CDMA Workshop Method

Update 9/14/10 -- There is an app in the market called MSL Reader that successfully found my MSL. It does require root access, my method will still work for phones that are not rooted. Thanks flexgrip for pointing this out, and mmastrac for the hard work developing the app.

Since the other method using aLogCat doesn't seem to work for everyone, this is a more consistent method.
Please be very careful with CDMA Workshop. I am not responsible for your curiosity, or stupidity!
I have included screenshots for installing the drivers on Windows 7 x64. This seems to be a little different for most users, so I hope this helps. Windows XP should be pretty similar to below. You can enter Device Manager the same way. Some of the prompts will be slightly different, but at the end most of the same dialogs will appear.
Prerequisites:
CDMA Workshop - http://www.cdma-ware.com/workshop.html
The Demo version will be able to retrieve the MSL.
HTC Diag Drivers - http://www.techwerkz.com/evo/HTCDiagDrivers.zip
I have compiled this zip which includes both x86 (32 bit), and x64 (64 bit) drivers for HTC diagnostics. I have successfully tested the x64 drivers on Windows 7, and all works without issue.
The Fun Part
Step 1 - Dial ##DIAG# (##3424#) on your phone.
Step 2 - Connect the phone to the computer via the USB cable. When prompted to install the drivers use the drivers from the ZIP provided above.
Windows will probably not be able to find the drivers:
You will need to manually install the drivers from Device Manager. Quickest way to get there is to press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog. Type in devmgmt.msc:
Once Device Manager is open you will see it cannot find the HTC Diag driver :
Right click on HTC Diag, and go to Update Driver. You will be prompted with the following, choose Browse my Computer. Then choose Let me Pick. Click Next. Click Have Disk. Browse to the drivers you downloaded, and choose the proper INF file. Click Next. Then finally Yes, if prompted :
If all went well you will see it installing the driver. Then finally let you know it was successfully installed!
Step 3 - Run CDMA Workshop you downloaded earlier.
Once CDMA Workshop is open click the word Port found on the right:
You will be given the options to select the correct COM port (Please note the demo version will only go to COM6. If you have an issue with this please Google how to change the COM port to something not in use.):
Once the correct COM port is selected click Connect:
Head over to the Security tab and click Read under the SPC / User Lock section:
If all has gone well you will be given your MSL code! It is the 6 digit number listed after pressing Read. Great Success!
Testing
The following sections should prompt for your MSL code. Enter what you have retrieved to find out if it is in fact the correct MSL code.

If you followed the steps correctly, the code should work.
Hope this helps everyone with finding their MSL when Sprint will not give it to you. Again, I am not responsible for what you do with this information. This is a use at your own risk method!

Not everyone was having the same luck. There are other ways to get your MSL. My corporate account rep gives me mine on all my phones when I ask. However, this is a method that will work for the masses, and not rely on customer service feeling giving or not.

I get this error when I try to run the SPC/User lock read.
Any Ideas?

Try power cycling the phone. Then try once more.

Why not chat up sprint and ASK for the MSL... thats what I did... and they just gave it to me... same with my HTC Hero... they just gave it to me if you ask nicely.

i have activesync going and it connects fine to the phone.

Here's a surefire way to get Sprint to give you the MSL with one phone call... Tell them you keep getting error 1012 whenever you try to use data or update the profile. They'll walk you through fixing the "error", and they have to give you the MSL in the process. Works every single time without fail!

Dude this works great and is quick, probably quicker than sitting through Sprint message prompts.

Hello forums, I am new to xda, and to the motorola section so if I misplaced this post please forgive me. I have check all over the place trying to figure out my problem. I just got the Atrix 2 and tried running a one-click root program only to get the error "more than one device and emulator" I have read online, and from what I can understand that it may be an "adb" error, and that I need to locate the adb devices by using the command prompt (as seen here in the comments of another website cant post cause I'm a new user)
Not being very tech savvy I'm not quite sure how to control cmd, and if this is even the right thing to be looking for. If there is anyone who could walk me through this I would be infinitely grateful. Through these forums, or perhaps email, or skype. I don't want to bog down anyone, but I have been looking forward to getting and rooting this phone for quite a while now.

Not sure about the error message, but have you made sure before you try to run the root exploit that your device (in settings/applications) you have the "Unknown Sources" and "USB Debugging" boxes checked?

Yea, I made sure to enable both of those settings, since then I have tried messing around with the usb settings. When I set the phone to "charge only" get past the first phase and the phone reboots. However, upon rebooting I get the same error of having more than one device and emulator. I have also tried starting the root with Mass Storage on. Does anyone the source of this error, or some key words I could start researching?

Are you getting that error only when connected to your PC?

I'm not quite sure what you mean, I dont get error when the phone is disconnected or connected via usb except when running the root program. Thank you for the article on the "bluestacks" problem. I'm not running that program, but I guess it's possible that something else on the computer could be conflicting. I checked task manager, nothing there. The other message talking about killing the adb server, how would I go about doing that? Like I said I'm not super tech savvy, so when it comes to command prompt stuff I have problems. Any suggestions?

Are you running Android 2.3.6. and which one click rooting method are you trying? You may want to download THIS ROOT EXPLOIT FILE, save to your C: drive, and plug in your device, set to "charge only". Then navigate to the C: drive, open the folder, and click the "click to root" option within the folder.

Disconnecting and Reconnected did the trick.

Root UG802

Hi, I´m a Ug802 owner and i root my stick using this chinese tool.
Its very easy to use and automatically install superuser. Just need to run it a restart the stick.
Plug USB to pc, check USB debbuging and connect to pc..........wait until recognize the Ug802, then click on ROOT (its the only word in inglish on bottom left.
Thats it..................

Can you confirm which ug802 you started with ?? There are quite a few different ones out there it seems. Ive had mine for 3 weeks now, it seems to be the latest version as it came preloaded with JellyBean.

Probably is the same model,mine comes with 4.1.1 and pre-rooted.

Thank you. I did try translate, but it says something like "Brush Application" so I had no idea what it was. Anyway, I tried it - still can't get my UG802 device to root. I've tried at least 3-4 different ways, this latest incarnation of UG802 seems to have a real problem with rooting.

Root with this software works
I can confirm this method. It works. Though i do not speak Chinese i could also install some kind of Google Play / Android market. Experimenting at the moment.

It didn't work for me. There are different UG802 incarnations, mine appears real "root resistant."

[Q] My PC doesn't recognize the Moto G

Hi folks,
Well... I don't know what is happening with my G. Everytime I connect it via USB, nothing happens, the directory doesn't appear at the explorer. I've been trying to install the drivers and sometimes the PC shows a correct installing, sometimes not.
I don't know what to do. Maybe format the Moto G...

1. Make sure you have good data cable
2. Usb port on your pc/computer is work
3. Install driver for your system.
And last, please make sure you choose the right " USB computer connection " method by going to Settings > Storage > tap on right top menu, select USB Computer Connection.

Install the Motorola drivers

First of all, thank you both. Sorry for the delay.
The USB Ports and the cable are ok. I've already installed drivers via Motorola Device Manager. After selecting USB Computer Connection, I check only the MTP option and nothing happens.
Maybe there is some cause of the problem:

Selecting the troubleshoot option, Windows starts to search drivers and, again, nothing happens. It can't fix the problem.

It seems that the drivers aren't installed properly. I don't know why it's happening... I've already used this method to transfer musics and all kind of stuff. Maybe something went wrong after some android update... I don't know.

Well, I've already done it.
How do the manual installation work? Is it through the ADB?
No. I don't know if it's a South America's version, but it has 16GB of memory and two sim card slots.
My main doubt is why it's happening, because I transferred files normally before.
How is this last method? What is the command?

You have to tap the notification (it will open a popup) and change to MTP each time you connect to the computer.

Yeah I know that, but when I tap MTP nothing happens. I've never had a problem with other phones running MM.

On the first day when I connected the phone to my PC everything was fine, I installed Xperia Companion and was able to access the internal storage/memory card. I tried on another PC and again all seemed fine. It is just on my main PC, there is a driver error (according to Windows device manager). Updating fails, uninstalling and plugging the device back in also doesn't work.

Now I need to figure out a way to remove the faulty driver!

You don't need to enable debugging to use MTP

Problem solved!
Problem solved, it is caused by the new driver update (Microsoft – WPD – 2/22/2016 12:00:00 AM – 5.2.5326.4762), it seems to have issue with some devices-specifically Mediatek powered ones. The solution is simple, uninstall the driver update via Windows, if that isn't possible then use system restore, if even that fails (like in my case) then the driver can be manually removed using command prompt, as explained here. Now the device connects fine, just like it used to.
As far as I am aware the update has now been pulled so shouldn't install. I triggered the installation of the update myself after manually checking for updates-that's the last time I'll be doing that. :silly:

Fix
Apparently there's a very simple solution. Same thing happened with me a few days ago, search for " How to Fix MTP! problem in windows 10 " on Youtube uploaded by " Infinity Studio " watch this it solved my problem. (Sorry can't post link as m still a junior member)
