Its ironic that its only happening to AT&T and Sprint, since they sell the iPhone.
Not to T-mobile for the One S...
Apple is running scared because they have inferior phone technology, and they will keep the competition out of the marketplace but rather in the hands of the US justice system.
HTC and Google need to lay the smack down and hold their ground, prove what is right and counter with the voice recognition and pull-down menu. Which were both around since the dawn of the G1.
Apple is a terrible company and this is yet another reason they don't give 2 $hits about the technology innovation by pushing the envelope further.
Too much piddle, for not enough shazzle.

Add to that the fact that Microsoft is, according to my source, about to blow everyone away with WP8. Supposedly they are gearing up to take the mobile market by storm, and every objection I've raised (including fragmentation, quality of hardware, and lack of support for apps )was met with "I can't discuss it, but it won't be a problem."

Oh relax. You know what the "patent" in question is? It regards being able to tap on a phone number and have the number appear in your dialer. All HTC has to do is release a software update removing this basic, obvious functionality (which has prior art stretching back to the 70s, but somehow Apple "invented" it in 2000), and the ban is lifted.
Unfortunately the US Supreme Court has decided to not play by its own rules, and so software is patentable. It used to be that math and other basic research was not patentable, but then it also used to be that corporations did not deserve stronger free speech rights than ordinary citizens. These kinds of ridiculous rulings will persist until we come to our senses and stop letting lawyers, who naturally have a vested interest in prolonged legal battles and an increasingly litigious society, serve as judges and lawmakers.

I can't believe so many were duped into ios world, which operates like a Communist system. My friends that own iPhone have been so many times to Apple store to fix the problem (unsuccessfully I may add).
The only outstanding feature of ios is that devices running on it are a lot more expensive. What a joke...

Apple suck, I'm pretty certain that my Nokia N95 used to be able to turn numbers in text messages into links but I notice they're not going after them. They'll probably claim to have invented front-facing cameras next.
I don't even believe this will affect Apple's market share, people who buy iphones do so because it's an iphone, simple as. They don't care what Android can do because it doesn't have an Apple on it. On the other hand, I wouldn't have an iphone on principle because I hate the restrictions, the ridiculous lawsuits, and itunes most of all. I even hate the mis-capitalisation of the names. People in either camp are not going to have their loyalty swayed by a tiny feature, and suing over this smacks of desperation. Get a life Apple.
Apple sauce is slimy! HTC rocks!
Phones have been doing this before the iPhone existed. It seems apple have to look for things not claimed by other companies so they can claim it as their own, where as the other companies don't see it as something they have a right to own...
In short go jump of a bridge apple the world would be a better place

Seriously? They don't have the necessary technology? Are you for real? HTC has control over the phone. They have the technology I assure you. I am an IT professional(for 20+years), managed IT companies, deploy servers/networks, build servers, clients, deploy wireless links, etc, etc. and far more.
HTC said that all phones will be unlocked, not me, not att. HTC rolled over apparently for att, instead of standing their ground, according to recent news.
And yes I have had HTC phones for the last 10 years, administer many smartphones, and have flashed more roms than I can remember.
I am shocked how HTC has made so many mistakes with this One(pun intended). Could have truly been a world beater if it had sd card, upgradeable battery, host mode, and an UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER!
Helping put pressure on HTC to put pressure on att is the ultimate goal. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, the quiet one gets ignored. Make some noise!

HTC doesnt have complete control of the phones in the US. The carriers have more control. They say if the bootloaders are locked or not and they control all updates sent out to the phones.
An a business level I cant blame them. If ATT said either lock them or we wont carry them then I would lock them down as well. We have to look at it from their point of view. They are in it to make money. ATT wants to cut back on the returns due to people messing with stuff most people have no business messing with. (happens more then you would think.)
We can complain all we want but in the end if you dont like it then do what i do and buy an international unlocked version and not worry about it.

Little bit of both to be honest. I see people getting into such an uproar without having all the facts. If people want to make a point then they should do so with all available info on it. I mean think about it. just for a hot min. If you were HTC what would you have done. Taken a 3 million device hit just to keep 1% of the users happy?
As for Apple there are far less issues with apple. If Android was as locked down as IOS then this would not be an issue
I have to agree with OP, even though the SGS3 is not as good looking as the One X, I will still go for the SGS3 because it has removable battery and storage which is important to me.
Sorry HTC you are trying hard to be Apple and you're not.

I disagree. It has something to do with HTC as well. Back at the end last year I got the vivid and we had to wait months and months for an unlock. We tried to urge both HTC and AT&T but they just pointed the finger at one another. Meanwhile, the GSII came to AT&T with no such problems. Even the skyrocket which came out at the exact same time of the vivid had no such issues. I'd be willing to bet the GSIII has no kind of problems with regards to rooting. HTC is just as much to blame for not keeping their promises, while Samsung doesn't have any such stipulations.

The Apple example is excellent. At&t bends over for Apple. No bloatware on their phones what so ever. People are mad at HTC more they SAID no more locked boot loaders and put out a phone with a locked boot loader. Does anyone like people that talk out of their ass? That's the issue here.

I don't think apple would do that. IMO if apple did companies like ASUS Sony and Samsung would be able to say but in ours is the most up to date state of the art tech. Which would cause apple to admit they're between a year and two years behind the competition. Which could result in a price fixing lawsuit. Just my guess and two cents. But my order for the Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 was cancelled because of the new ITC ban against it. But it freed me to order the nexus tablet

They buy them because you pretty much take it out of the box, turn it on, and use it. There's really no remotely complex setup stuff required. I mean, give an average user an iPhone and they will be up and running with most thing up and running within a few minutes. Android is a bit more complicated for the average user (and I don't think too many people will disagree with me, the emphasis was on AVERAGE, ie not most of us here on these forums).
Different people want different things out of their devices, that's just how it goes.
Apple's legal team, however, screw them.

Absolutely. It's like dominoes. The G-Tab 10.1 and GN are the first to fall. With those victories, Apple's going to rapidly expand the number of devices they go after using Judge Koh’s ruling as ammunition. The G-Tab's a design patent so that's harder to enforce but multi-source search is on every Android device. Judge Koh somehow linked it to Siri but it's really the entire Google search system. It's also kind of related to the HTC ITC issue where a single event provides multiple actions to choose from. This really isn't good for us, Android, and competition in general. I hope Apple rots (no pun intended).

I never had a problem with Apple before but they are forcing consumers to buy ONLY their products. Either we can have a crippled phone or an iPhone and that's just wrong.
Btw I didn't know Apple had a patent on Siri.
Goggle kinda shot itself in the foot by not obtaining patents for the stuff they had years before anyone else.

Double post.
Keep in mind that the ban is only in effect until the actual trial. If this same idiot judge presides over the actual trial and apple wins there's no way it survives appeal. That's my hope anyway. By the time this gets to trial the gnex will be replaced by the next nexus device.
Keep in mind the ban hasn't actually been seen since apple must post $95 mil for the ban to actually take effect. You can still purchase from the play store.
And you all act like apple has already won. With something this big, there will likely be a large settlement and apple will get its money and Android will make a few tweaks and for the most part still be the same.
Edit: I will eat my own words, it is not available. The 96 million dollars was posted by apple last night to enforce the ban...

It's banned as well
Apple is worth 500 billion. 95M is chump change to post up thanks to the minions who think their devices are just so fantastic and useful.
Posted from my iPad....haha
The ban only affects the original G-Tab 10.1. All the other sizes and all the "2" devices are still for sale. The GN has been removed from the PlayStore and now says "coming soon." In better news a UK judge through out three of Apple's patent claims against HTC and disqualified a fourth.
Thanks for clarifying. I thought it was the tab 2.
Happy Independence Day....Everyone needs just chill out. Google, Samsung and Apple - all are multi-billion dollar companies looking out after themselves.
Enjoy barbeque, salsa-dips and some chilled beers.....
Damn, just bought another Gnex yesterday, glad it still shipped out.

Actually I meant it. Here's the reason. If HTC phones get banned, no one gives a damn. Nothing changes. If Samsung devices get banned all hell will be raised. This is good for android's fight against apple.
I personally don't care about Samsung devices, and have no intention of getting one. Which raises the question, why are all of you so concerned?

Keep in mind the ban hasn't actually been seen since apple must post $95 mil for the ban to actually take effect. You can still purchase from the play store.
And you all act like apple has already won. With something this big, there will likely be a large settlement and apple will get its money and Android will make a few tweaks and for the most part still be the same.
Edit: I will eat my own words, it is not available. The 96 million dollars was posted by apple last night to enforce the ban...

if Apple loses, samsung gets the money to "cover" lost sales
If apple wins, they get the bond back

Because if Apple wins this then they will most likely come after other or all Android manufacturers.

If Apple wins and if it sets a legal precedent then be sure that everyone else would have to either pony up or deploy a workaround. The thing is; in software patents, as ridiculous they are - workarounds are easy. The problem happens when Samsung copies the whole design as they did with some variants of original galaxy s. But, by the time courts take a look at the case, the model becomes obsolete and new versions are launched.

So...is Apple going to ever stop suing?

Wth is wrong with apple? I feel like they are literally trying to stop the sale of Android phones with their stupid patents...do you guys think they will win the whole Galaxy Nexus case?

They have won already. Google announced they are altering android to ensure it satisfies apples lawyers.
One thing being changed is searching. Voice search will no longer return local results because apples patent means only siri is allowed to offer local knowledge.

They won against samsung but lost against htc so there is nothing to worry

I feel like if the patent system doesn't make serious changes on the Software side this is going to set a precedent for further "patent-trolls".
The only thing apple is good at is suing.

Its the nexus win that has forced google to change android so the htc case is not a factor now that google are changing the os apple have their first android change rather than manufacturer specific as htc win was when apple won an injunction before.

I hope apple doesn't ruin android :crying:
The patent is a joke, like most.
I suggest Apple becomes the mascot for US Corporate Fascism.
Guess using your voice or any other human bodily input methods shall be patented next... Perhaps Apple travelled back in time and altered everyone's DNA? (Yes the iPhone 12 does time travel) They might have a case to settle with everyone then! We shall have to follow the Apple iBible in life then.

While I think it's stupid, it's not the judges fault. Their job is to make the decision based on whether the patent was infringed or not, even if they think the patent was stupid (haven't heard from the judge so I can't say what their personal beliefs on the matter are) if it was infringed they have to rule in favor of Apple if they believe there to be infringement.
I do not know why everyone is riding the judge for her decision. It is her job to interpret the law and use other cases as guidelines. Apple is winning in the US, but mostly losing in the UK.
But, yes, Apple is losing marketshare to Android. The more mature thumb optimized touchscreen smartphones become, the more options OEMs must give consumers. That Apple one phone a year model will cease to work magic and they will find themselves in a position they do not want to be in - no more of that high margin, one device fits all once a year, planned obsolecense all wrapped around a marketing hype machine.
Well when your backs up against the wall, thats the time to become creative.
Apple is only taking a little chip with the voice search on ics but google will fix it for now until they get that idea (like pull down notifications, Genius!!) and make apple and its customers jealous. Steve Jobs (rest in peace, great man) is gone and apple is stuck re releasing the same crap just fixed up. Ex. The New Ipad, better screen, faster. and Iphone 4s, faster, with some dumb virtual assistant. Only people like Samuel L Jackson use Siri like the commercial shows but all of us get bored within hours. Apple is staring at a blank page and the essay is due tomorrow. There really isn't any must have, new technology(like front facing camera or dual core processors, and 3d screen) out right now that would get people buying them instead of android. Android stepped up, with play and jellybean and there is going to be much more to come. The Gnex will be back in a week, badder and better than ever.
If i was Google Ceo and some kid like Apple wants a fight, I get Jellybean on every new device and most popular old ones, then pull youtube off iphones. but then again im not the Ceo.
f*** apple.... seriously, just f*** apple....
