[Q] Radio problem? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hey guys,
I'm looking for a little help here. My Skyrocket seems to be having radio/modem issues.
Instead of having a symbol that displays cell signal, I have a circle with a line through it. This is true with or without a working SIM inserted. For baseband version it says "unknown".
I've tried flashing to stock and that didn't seem to make a difference. I got this phone second hand so I don't know if the previous owner tried to flash an incompatible rom and borked up the radio firmware possibly?
Any thoughts about what I can try?

That all depends on which method and tar you used. Some tars dont come with the radio. and with the wrong radio on a rom you will get a RIL mismatch and no signal

So I'm unsure how it got to its current state. (meaning the circle with a line through it) To return to stock I used the K0nane tar that's in the sticky in the dev section. I don't know if that has a radio in it or not but flashing that didn't seem to change things.

That doesn't have a radio in it. Look in your "about phone" and tell me what your baseband and android version says.
After that I will probably say to flash the sammobile tar...
Also, Did you have the correct plan added to your service when you switched phones?

baseband version = unknown

Right..
Assuming your plan has been provisioned for the new lte phone, I would flash the sammobile tar in odin

I'm going to give that a try. I suppose I'll just search for sammobile?
The SIM i'm using was provisioned for my previous Skyrocket. I ended up trading that but used the same sim in my new phone. So, I'm assuming the SIM/my account should be proivisioned for LTE since I never had AT&T change anything on their end.
And just to clarify, this doesn't really seem to be a "no service" type problem since its as if the radio isn't even recognized by the hardware.

Right, seems to be a ril mismatch.
Factory reset and then flash the sammobile tar

I'm downloading now. I'll report back after I flash.

Lol, I appreciate the helpful info in your reply. Just so you know, I don't seem to be having the same issue as any other post that I've seen. Unlike the other posts I've read, I don't have "no sim" or no signal, or no LTE. My problem almost seems like an issue with the SIM slot itself. I think I can rule that out because I've actually replaced the SIM slot with a known good SIM slot. The other reason I think I can rule this out is because I am unable to access the radio related content from within the service menu. Unfortunately I don't think there will be a :oof:: that fixes what I have going on. (I wouldn't mind being wrong on this)
So I flashed the sammobile tar (multiple times) but no luck. The baseband version still reports as "unknown". What's more, my phone reboots after about 15 or 20 seconds. Very odd. Any other thoughts on things to try?

flash cwm via Odin, flash my efs fix from the sticky, and then re flash the Sam mobile tar via Odin.

dude life got BUSY all of a sudden. I come back, u got team waffle, u traded in our wip rom for an aokp t989 port, and a whole bunch of other stuff poppin off (ucle2). WTH lol, I wish I coulda been apart of at least a lil of it.

Flash the stock rom and radio and radio then dial #*2263# and click automatic. Then wait a minute or so and see if it goes back to showing the bars.
Sent from my Skyrocket 4G LTE using XDA Premium

I'm going to try the multiple suggestions I got and report back. I'm also attaching the "screen shots"

Hopefully the attachments are here

I flashed EFSFix through CWM and then SAMMOBILE tar through ODIN. No luck, but ODIN did take about twice as long as it did the first time I tried flashing the sam .tar. Same symptoms, circle with a line through it and phone reboots itself after about 20 seconds. The baseband version still reports as "unknown".
I flashed back to stock through ODIN, flashed CWM with ODIN, and then flashed EFSFix again. Same exact results as the first time.
Next I flashed back to stock using ODIN, and flashed UCLE2 ROM through ODIN. Flashing this causes the reboot issue to go away, but the radio issue remains. (I thought to try the UCLE2 ROM because that's what was loaded when I first received the phone and the phone wasn't rebooting itself then)

[Q] Nexus S No SIM Error (AT&T)

Couldn't find this anywhere so I thought I would ask....
I've had the White Nexus S w/ AT&T 3G Bands for a week or so now and it's been great. Running CM7 with custom kernel and all is good. For what ever reason it started giving me the "No SIM" error. I have no idea why this just happened all of the sudden like this. Anyways, AT&T was kind enough to give me a new SIM and this issue just will not go away.
I'm out of ideas on this...
Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if this will work, but try to go back to stock, and see if it's works.
I'm a Vibrant user, so I have no idea how you would do this (least I won't until Wednesday, when I get the Nexus S 4G from Sprint), but try that, may fix your problem.

Bootloader shows the Radio version to be: I9020UCKB2
It even shows the carrier info to be ATT
What should the APN settings be for AT&T?
Borrowed the APN settings off of a Bravo here inside the store and and when I save the settings it doesn't list the APN like it should. I am saving the settings but it doesn't show after its saved.

Now I'm having issues with flashing the stock radio...
Here's what the device is telling me:
"Verify Image (RADIO) ... Fail
And of course cmd prompt just shows where the write failed. I am using the radio file found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033269
I'm just simply extracting the radio img from that zip and using fastboot to apply.

Yeah I have. I received a brand new one from AT&T when this first started.
I've given up on fixing this device. I contacted Negri Electronics and asked for an RMA. This unit has to be a lemon. This will make the first time I've ever had to send a phone back. Hopefully the replacement will be a better unit.

[Q] Please insert sim card error

I first used the one click method to originally put a custom rom on my skyrocket. I used the I727UCLE2_OneClick-5FCC9DECF4915ED1C0CD7F42799C3783.exe file, and it worked great. Then, I followed the instructions for the "SKY-ICS 4.2F-4.5 (UXCLF3 Base) 6/25/12 OFFICIAL (4.0.4) ICS AT&T/ROGERS SAFE" rom. I followed them to a T. The phone reboot, everything looked great.
Only, my phone now says to insert a sim card.
I dial *#06*, and it says IMEI null/null
I've searched and looked at numerous threads, but I couldn't find any that helped me.

Please help.

First I tried the stock at&t kj2, then I tried ICS UCLF5.
There is a fix for that... but first try to shut down and pull battery, sim and sd card for a while.
I now know how important the efs folder is... you know, that folder that's now missing all those files on my skyrocket.
We live, make mistakes, and learn from those mistakes.

I did, for 15 minutes.
I chickened out and restored it to the factory firmware using kies, and it fixed it. Where did I go wrong? I probably used the wrong radio file. I'm still learning. What one should I choose for at&t lte on my skyrocket?
... and next time, I'll backup my efs folder BEFORE i do anything like this.

I don't want to get too far off topic on this post, but what exactly is the difference between all the different radio files? Perhaps there's a thread that explains this.

Some work better than others depending on your physical location. They are all leaked, except the Rogers one which is official.

Good to know. Thank you.
I'm having a similar problem. After getting my stock Skyrocket I installed the one-click UCALC4 that I had read about from the sticky. Shortly after, I have no 4g or mms and the phone doesn't see the sim card, but I can still see my phone number and IMEI.
Everything works fine when I turn on the phone, but after about 30 seconds the icon at the top turns into a circle with a slash. Occasionally after booting it will work for a few hours but not often.
After flashing different radios and trying to revert to a stock 2.3.6 the problem persists. Eventually I installed the one-click UCLE5 ICS and it worked fine for all morning until I left for work and while I could make calls, neither party could hear the other. I got into my voicemail once but after that I had the same problem as above.
Right now I rebooted a couple of times and it has been working fine for about three hours. I keep trying to produce the symptom but no luck.

Invalid Sim Card

Hello All,
Earlier I had a boot loop problem, which was easily solved with One Click Unbrick Heimdall. After which I installed entropy's daily driver, installed CWM, and updated to CM10. For whatever reason, I kept losing signal and data. Originally, I thought it possibly a bug in the rom, but after trying Paranoid Android and also qkster's Clean_Wipe script, I decided to go back to stock.
After going back to stock, I now get an "Invalid Sim Card!" message after a few minutes with the screen off (I have signal and data working before this), and this problem persists until I reboot the phone. After rebooting, it will show this message again.
One weird thing I noticed was that I do not get the "Invalid Sim Card" message, nor do I lose signal when my phone is plugged in and charging. Any ideas on what is causing this and what I can do to fix it? It's the same sim card I've had all along.
Thanks
I've had the CM10 issue where EFS folder gets lost, which wipes out all radio functions, but never an invalid SIM error message. I don't have anything to offer that'd address your specific problem.
One thing that may be worth trying would be to Heimdall back to stock again, and then flash the bootloaders. After the initial flash, leave the Heimdall screen running and check the "Flash Bootloaders" box. Once the phone is booted up after the initial flash, shut it down again and boot into download mode. Then flash again, but this time it'll also install the bootloaders.
May or may not help, but there's always the remote possibility that something could have somehow been corrupted with the first flash, and this will at least help eliminate a variable and let you start troubleshooting with a clean slate.

I didn't get the invalid SIM error message on CM10 (just lost signal), only on stock gingerbread. But I'll try flashing bootloaders and let you know if that fixes my problem.
EDIT: I keep getting a message saying it cannot upload pit file. Any suggestions?
Reboot PC and try again. Sometimes it's just a random USB quirk. Maybe try switching USB ports. If you do reboot the PC, you'll have better luck with getting a good connection afterwords if you pull the phone's battery and reboot it into Download Mode.

I guess I should put out this warning: IF you're having alot of trouble getting a reliable USB connection for Heimdall, you should be cautious when considering flashing the Bootloaders. From my understanding of things, a bad Bootloader flash is about the only way to really brick an Infuse.

I rebooted. No such luck. I can still boot into download mode and recovery, but not into the actual OS now. I've flashed the bootloaders before when I was semi bricked, so I thought that it would work again. This was the only computer I had success on before. So I'll have to see if I can get another computer to work.

I always keep a decent selection of ROM zips on my internal SD for such occasions. Since you can get into CWM, see if you can mount USB storage and transfer a different ROM to your phone, assuming you don't already have some saved on it. It'll at least give you functionality again, while you figure your Heimdall issues out. Assuming that it was a wiped-out EFS folder that caused your JB connectivity issues, I'd try flashing back to that for now. I've only had that happen once, in approximately 10 JB flashes, so it seems to be a bit of an unlikely occurrence, for the most part. Odds are, it'll be fine this time around.

Err I don't have CWM anymore since I used Heimdall to go back to stock. And I don't think it was the EFS folder for my connectivity issues, because I had the same issues on stock.
EDIT: got it back to stock on a different computer. Will post again if I encounter the "invalid sim card" problem again
[EDIT2: back to stock, still have the problem /I]
Maybe there was a slight issue with the SIM card reader and the flashing about exacerbated the problem to where it showed itself. If you're still within your warranty period, maybe look into getting a replacement?

Seems unlikely. As far as I know, the only thing that can be written to the SIM card is new contacts. If you happen to have another AT&T SIM card available, I'd try putting it in and seeing if it still gives the same error message. If it does, obviously, it's something with the phone, or at least the software. If not, maybe the SIM did somehow manage to go bad. It's not a problem I've ever run into. I'm out of ideas.

did you remove SIM when flashing the JB roms???
OP's have warnings about leaving SIM card in for flashing, at least first flash anyway.
also suggests doing EFS back up.
always tell people "read read read"
not trying to do the "told you so" thing here, probably not helping.
can't you get new SIM from store?

Perhaps you should take your own advice, and "read read read" again. You have your cards mixed up. The recommendation is to remove your external SD card, not the SIM card. I've never removed my SIM for flashing, and never had any issues because of it.

If I read this correctly, you went directly from gb to cm10.
Your error wasn't so much as sim or signal. It is due to the mtd conversion from gb voodoo.
Seems like the correct way would be: gb to cm7/cm9, then cm7/cm9 to cm10.
If you check about phone, you will likely see garble on the imei line.

np...I have always recommended ppl to specifically state the problem they are experiencing in complete detail, step wise and leaving nothing out.
It helps those to are willing to help others better understand where you are coming from.
In your instance, to isolate the hw vs firmware issue, you may want to consider Heimdall 1 click uckj4 or uclb3 package with complete boot loader box checked to get back to a complete stock.
Or Odin one of the leak package with pit and repartition.
If you have successfully done this and the sim issue or signal remain, it is possible that it's a hardware issue

not sure why you would want to do that..you should be able to get enough from the variety that is available on the i997
each device has their own specific modem
some had reported success using modem from different galaxy device if the hardware is similar
i think the first galaxy captivate modem work but cant vouch for that. it's been almost 2yrs since i recall that topic being brought up

I did read in another forum that the emg4 modem can fix the signal (baseband unknown and imei unknown) so, i was thinking to flash it

this issue is a different altogether. flashing a modem from a different device over it is unlikely to fix the problem
kinda like trying to fix a accidentally pregnant girl with a baseball bat...
the baseband or imei was prolly from a bad jb flash
bring it back to complete stock may fix it
I tried that too...but doesnt work

the only time I had with a lost emei was a flash from gb to jb without going thru ics..i brought it back to stock gb and it came back.
gb uses rfs - samsung partition. jb moves the partitions around so the emei may seem lost. that's why i think when you go back to gb, it is found again. i think the same can happen to miui and cm7 flash
i've read flash jb 2 or 3 times may also work..idk..can't vouch for that
here is 2 posts in the general section that address the null emei issue...idk..it may help.

you can also try flashing another device's modem you wanted and report back. the worse that can happen is you sending the phone to the repair guys for a jtag flash for bricking it if odin or heimdall wont bring it back

You have left out a lot of details.
Your question was originally about flashing another modem.
Then it turned to missing or corrupt emei.
Is hard to tell a problem when there is not enough detail about how you got there.
Aside from making sure you have the correct apn, until you provide further detail about what happen to your phone, it is unlikely you will have further inputs..
The original answer to your question about flashing another device modem on to the infuse: is not something I would recommend or attempt myself.

yes you right, i change the subject a little, but I had made a post with this problem and there was no response, so, I hope these details are sufficient:
_i was using the 4.2.2 rom slim 7.8 jb for a long time, then i took a trip to a mountain, poor coverage, so, theres a friend who take my cel and she put it in a box full of moisture and strong products such as alcohol (to cure) and it was a little wet and then when i got back to my city, i pass from poor signal to no signal, baseband unknown and ime unknown, but suddenly, every 4-5 days, the signal go back for a instant, and i receive old sms and missed calls, and i get back the baseband and imei for an instant, but then, gone again

this may be hardware issues ex: sim card reader, sim card, connection in phone, antennae etc
especially true when it was running well and then you got it wet and it would read periodically
try disassemble all the phone parts completely, clean off all parts and connection with strong cleaner, dry it in silica, rice, beans for a few days and reassemble.

Changing Modem on SlimKat

Since I do not have enough posts to ask on the developers thread, I was wondering what modems i could flash on SlimKat because i have not been able to send long texts. I tried using both the padded modems for newer roms as well as the GB/Froyo modems and i wouldnt get any signal at all and it said that the baseband version was unknown when trying to flash either. Any ideas?
You're in the right forum -- the development forums are generally reserved for active development, not questions about how to use what has been developed. We're a little "sloppy" here because the SGS4G community has gotten a lot smaller in the past few years, but still a good habit to get used to.
@FBis251 maintains a repository of modems, padded for the various ROMs.
Try the various ones and see what works well for you.

Thanks! I tried all of the modems except for the cm7 but when i get more time or when i get frustrated with not being able to send long texts i guess i know where to look.
So i tried all different types of modems and no matter what i would get "unknown" for the baseband version and i would not get signal.

Have you also lost your iemi numbers?
When i reflash the rom (which recovers the modem to kj6) then i would would get signal again so i take it that my imei numbers are still intact. I also have used odin to flash modems before and it always worked with the kj6 rom (with any other modem).

I would suggest using recovery (TWRP or CWM) to flash the padded modem file, less room for error. I use the KJ5 Modem which works for me, had the same issue with long texts on KJ6.
I did try it at least twice on TWRP with the same results... Were you on SlimKat/BeanStalk(4.4.2)?

Yes, Slimkat. Flash the ROM. Then go back to recovery and flash the modem file of your choice. You should be able to then confirm in your Settings-> Status screen. You should see the baseband change, if not there is something wrong.

Which file did you use? Was it one of the padded modems or just a regular one?

Use the Padded Modems found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192436
I personally use KJ5, which is this specific file: http://sourceforge.net/projects/tea...d/sgh-t959v_mtd_kj5_padded_modem.zip/download

I flashed the KG4 padded modem and i am still getting an unknown baseband after letting my phone sit for about 5 minutes after flashing.
Did you check to see if there is anything under your APN... Settings>mobile networks>Access Point Names...maybe add it manually if there is nothing there.

I did not, but would anything show up if the Baseband is saying unknown? I am back to the stock modem (kj6) because i needed to get my signal back.
Edit: So the problem still isnt solved, but long texts are sending (before i would get an error message saying failed) so i dont need to worry changing the modem anymore. Thanks for helping guys even though it didnt work out!

Had the same thing happen to me. Kept asking and received the answer that worked for me. Just make sure your CWM or TWRP recovery images are updated to the very latest. Should work. Been testing modems back and forth for a couple days now. Still getting sudden signal drops though. I wondering if T-Mobiles update to their towers isn't compatible with our hardware. Seems coincidental that many had this problem start right around that time. Trying to force us to upgrade devices tailored to their services provided...haha anyways...I'll stop ranting now

Just use a file manager to copy the modem.bin file to /radio/
I tried flashing from TWRP and got the unknown baseband error as well. Manually copied it over and all is well now.
The modem installer zips were written for ICS roms. They might have worked on some JellyBean roms but I definitely never tested them on KitKat. @Dwack has the right method for this though, copying by hand should work fine since that's all the .zip files do.
