[Q] Nexus S No SIM Error (AT&T) - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Couldn't find this anywhere so I thought I would ask....
I've had the White Nexus S w/ AT&T 3G Bands for a week or so now and it's been great. Running CM7 with custom kernel and all is good. For what ever reason it started giving me the "No SIM" error. I have no idea why this just happened all of the sudden like this. Anyways, AT&T was kind enough to give me a new SIM and this issue just will not go away.
I'm out of ideas on this...
Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if this will work, but try to go back to stock, and see if it's works.
I'm a Vibrant user, so I have no idea how you would do this (least I won't until Wednesday, when I get the Nexus S 4G from Sprint), but try that, may fix your problem.

I'm having a very difficult time locating the stock firmware for the i9020a

Flashed back to stock and the NO SIM error still exist...
I really hope this issue isn't hardware related...

Bootloader shows the Radio version to be: I9020UCKB2
It even shows the carrier info to be ATT
What should the APN settings be for AT&T?

Borrowed the APN settings off of a Bravo here inside the store and and when I save the settings it doesn't list the APN like it should. I am saving the settings but it doesn't show after its saved.
Uuugggghhhh...

Now I'm having issues with flashing the stock radio...
Here's what the device is telling me:
"Verify Image (RADIO) ... Fail
And of course cmd prompt just shows where the write failed. I am using the radio file found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033269
I'm just simply extracting the radio img from that zip and using fastboot to apply.

Yeah I have. I received a brand new one from AT&T when this first started.
I've given up on fixing this device. I contacted Negri Electronics and asked for an RMA. This unit has to be a lemon. This will make the first time I've ever had to send a phone back. Hopefully the replacement will be a better unit.

Noobie Question for I9020A using TMobile Sim Card

Hi all,
As a preface, I bought my Nexus S yesterday (Craigslist) already Unlocked and Rooted with CyberGR Mod v2 ROM loaded. I inserted my T-Mobile Sim Card and made a successful call; the person receiving my call confirmed it was in fact my phone number calling them.
I wiped the phone clean and did a factory reset. I flashed into the OTA ICS 4.0.3 official ROM and I received no signal. I noted that my baseband had changed to KI1 as a result.
I then tried to reflash into a modified ROM, but found out that Clockwork Recovery wasn't pulling up as it used to. In fact, Clorckwork Recovery won't stick at all. Thus I resorted to Fastboot to get into CWR and loaded Cyanogen 9. No signal.
Fastboot into CWR and loaded CyberGR Mod v2 like before. No signal.
Fastboot into CWR and flashed different I9020a radio images, JK1, JK8, KB3... No signal.
Any ideas? Am I missing something?
Thanks you all!
It looks like the previous owner scared the crap out of this poor Nexus S...
is the IMEI correct ?
input *#06# and report.
or T mobile is barring you for some reason ... did you contact them ?
Thanks for your reply mahanddeem! The IMEI on the back cover matches with what showed on screen. I will give TMobile a call right now and report back in this thread.
Edit: Will have to wait tomorrow for when TMobile customer service opens for business, but I'm still able to use my Nexus one with the same sim card.
I9020a uses frequencies for at&t. You should have gotten an i9020t as it uses the frequencies needed for T-Mobile.

I think you need to flash an at&t radio to get a signal. Not sure, though. I know you'll only get EDGE data speeds, no 3G.

Please don't bring a big problem on top of OP's ones .... Flashing an I9020T radio for I9020A phone wouldn't make it the other model and also not the other way around ..
And for the OP , you're welcome and feel free to hit the thanks button.

Huh? I said flash an AT&T radio. The OP said he has an I9020A, which is an AT&T phone. Nothing said about flashing a tmobile radio. Read the previous post thoroughly before replying, please.
No matter what radio he flashes, it will not change what the hardware supports. T-Mobile uses aws for it's hspa. The phone he has (i9020a) does not support it. No matter what he flashes, the best he will get is edge. what the OP needs to do is get the right phone.

After trying different radio images with inconclusive results, I'm now on I9020AUCKF1... also with inconclusive results. T-Mobile was of no help saying that they never supported the Nexus S model I currently own, and that I should contact Samsung tech support.
After going through Samsung support via Online Chat, they told me to hit up T-Mobile support at the end.
Lovely.

yeah unfortunately sometimes each party is throwing toward the other , not suprising ...
I would clean , AGAIN , everything from top to buttom again ...
With factory reset + SD format
With CWM --->format / clean everything comes in your way...
Then install a full (try Gingerbread FULL ROM , 2.3.6) with its Radio and everything , for your model
And hope for the best ...

The ICS 4.0.3 rom you flashed is for the I9020T phone. It does not work for I9020A.
Try flashing the FULL original stock rom for your phone.
If it is a I9020A then it should be this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445621
These have the correct bootloader, radio, and ROM.
The latest is Android 2.3.6/GRK39F

Any luck ?
I'll give it a try tomorrow. Thanks for the help you all. Points for everybody!
EDIT: ejohnson0547 - I actually previously flashed into the Gingerbread ROM you listed; no luck there either. I did made sure that it was for the i9020a as well when previously flashing the legacy roms. Guess I'll start from square one again and try gingerbread once more. By the way, you wouldn't happen to know whether or not flashing an I9020T ROM into an I9020A Nexus will brick the radio, would you? I'm hoping that this phone still works with AT&T SIM cards, just in case I might need to trade or sell it off for the correct model of Nexus.

Tried editing and adding new APN settings with whatever T-Mobile network settings/names I can find online, but none have actually turned to my favor. Is there an actual updated list I can find and use that exists online or on XDA? Google has been failing me a bit these past few days
Just tried it a few minutes ago, and I only get a "Emergency Calls" signal, as well as only being able to view AT&T as the only Available Network under Mobile Network Settings. Kind of what I expected in the end, as this was exactly what I had been facing the past few days. Now if only I could find an AT&T SIM card to test it out...

[Q] Radio Flashing Problem

Hi, I've recently installed the Android Revolution HD 6.3.1 ROM on my Inspire 4G and I'm having problems when I'm using with it another provider (Not having service when I'm in an area where it's supposed to have) so I was looking forward to a solution and noticed that I had to flash a radio also. The problem is that when I'm trying to flash the radio included in the same thread it goes well until a point where it says "FAILED Remote: not allowed". Does anyone know how to fix this or if I'm doing something wrong? Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Where are you getting the radio download?
You can only use the radio from the ARHD OP if you are eng s-off, which most people aren't. You need to do this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19920345&postcount=5965
It sounds like you are attempting to flash using fastboot in which you will need to get eng hboot.
Iwould suggest flashing thru regular means! Go to the radio flashing forum 4 instructions

[Q] Radio problem?

Hey guys,
I'm looking for a little help here. My Skyrocket seems to be having radio/modem issues.
Instead of having a symbol that displays cell signal, I have a circle with a line through it. This is true with or without a working SIM inserted. For baseband version it says "unknown".
I've tried flashing to stock and that didn't seem to make a difference. I got this phone second hand so I don't know if the previous owner tried to flash an incompatible rom and borked up the radio firmware possibly?
Any thoughts about what I can try?
That all depends on which method and tar you used. Some tars dont come with the radio. and with the wrong radio on a rom you will get a RIL mismatch and no signal

So I'm unsure how it got to its current state. (meaning the circle with a line through it) To return to stock I used the K0nane tar that's in the sticky in the dev section. I don't know if that has a radio in it or not but flashing that didn't seem to change things.

That doesn't have a radio in it. Look in your "about phone" and tell me what your baseband and android version says.
After that I will probably say to flash the sammobile tar...
Also, Did you have the correct plan added to your service when you switched phones?

Right..
Assuming your plan has been provisioned for the new lte phone, I would flash the sammobile tar in odin
I'm going to give that a try. I suppose I'll just search for sammobile?
The SIM i'm using was provisioned for my previous Skyrocket. I ended up trading that but used the same sim in my new phone. So, I'm assuming the SIM/my account should be proivisioned for LTE since I never had AT&T change anything on their end.
And just to clarify, this doesn't really seem to be a "no service" type problem since its as if the radio isn't even recognized by the hardware.

Lol, I appreciate the helpful info in your reply. Just so you know, I don't seem to be having the same issue as any other post that I've seen. Unlike the other posts I've read, I don't have "no sim" or no signal, or no LTE. My problem almost seems like an issue with the SIM slot itself. I think I can rule that out because I've actually replaced the SIM slot with a known good SIM slot. The other reason I think I can rule this out is because I am unable to access the radio related content from within the service menu. Unfortunately I don't think there will be a :oof:: that fixes what I have going on. (I wouldn't mind being wrong on this)
So I flashed the sammobile tar (multiple times) but no luck. The baseband version still reports as "unknown". What's more, my phone reboots after about 15 or 20 seconds. Very odd. Any other thoughts on things to try?

Flash the stock rom and radio and radio then dial #*2263# and click automatic. Then wait a minute or so and see if it goes back to showing the bars.

I'm going to try the multiple suggestions I got and report back. I'm also attaching the "screen shots"
Hopefully the attachments are here
I flashed EFSFix through CWM and then SAMMOBILE tar through ODIN. No luck, but ODIN did take about twice as long as it did the first time I tried flashing the sam .tar. Same symptoms, circle with a line through it and phone reboots itself after about 20 seconds. The baseband version still reports as "unknown".
I flashed back to stock through ODIN, flashed CWM with ODIN, and then flashed EFSFix again. Same exact results as the first time.
Next I flashed back to stock using ODIN, and flashed UCLE2 ROM through ODIN. Flashing this causes the reboot issue to go away, but the radio issue remains. (I thought to try the UCLE2 ROM because that's what was loaded when I first received the phone and the phone wasn't rebooting itself then)

[Help] HTC One S stuck on EDGE after S-offing

I seem to have somehow messed up my HTC One S's radio while S-off'ing my phone: its now stuck on EDGE. I followed all the steps exactly, but after completing everything, I noticed that my phone wouldn't connect to 3G/UMTS anymore. I know that it isn't a hardware problem as it can occasionally latch onto a 3G signal, but everytime it did, it would have full bars, then the strength would change to 0 dBm and 99 asu, where it would then proceed to switch over to EDGE and signal strength would return to normal.
So I ended up reflashing my ROM, relocking my bootloader, RUU-ing my phone, S-on'ing my phone, trying multiple different RUUs... and nothing works.
Also, there's nothing wrong with my network, as my brother with a separate phone on the same network has no problems. I've even tried his SIM card, but that also gets placed only on EDGE.
Does anyone have any insight on what is wrong with my phone?
Edit: attached the logcat to the OP, and this is when I put my phone on 3G only mode: connects to UMTS:3, however cannot get a data connection, then disconnects and loses the signal.
Yea i had this problem to with cm 10.1 aamd did everything trying to fix and yesterday i flashed pacman room and 3g and 4g works. You can try flashing that Rom.

Thanks for the reply, I've just tried it your suggesting, but unfortunately it's still not working
I guess I'll just leave my phone to run by itself for a while, and hope that it 'clicks' and 3G comes back like what the person in the other thread said happened for him/her.
You check to see if your provider is doing maintenence or if there is an outage?

I'm not quite sure how if data is enabled or not would affect it, as my phone can't even connect to the 3G network. It can, however, get data on the 2G network.

I have just been able to get around to a computer, and have grabbed a logcat of what happens when I switch my phone to 3G only mode and it just disconnects itself from the network (i.e. goes into UNKNOWN:0 mode)
If anyone could look through it and see what could possibly be wrong with my phone, it would be highly appreciated.
The main error I can see myself is the:
Code:
[main] qcril_qmi_voice_nas_control_convert_radio_tech_to_radio_tech_family: invalid radio tech = 0
But then I'm not exactly literate at logcat.
Thank you in advance to anyone who could at least look through it and help me out at least a little bit here. (Yes, it's a .rar file as the file size exceeded the upload size limit)

Tried using the radio installer in the Development section: it changes the radio but doesn't fix the problem. Unless someone has a radio.img and some instructions on how to flash it?
Edit: okay, managed to grab a radio.img from the Sense Radio Installer. But I can't install it through fastboot flash radio radio.img even when I'm s-off'd. But a quick question on this: would flashing the radio like this affect CM?

Wow you got a interesting problem. You shouldn't have a problem using fastboot to flash a radio. What error does it give you?
It may or may not effect your phone if you're using CM10. Hardware wise the phone uses the radio installed to it. Software wise in CM10 it doesn't so there can be an effect. But since you've done several RUU's and I assume it still not working on the stock sense rom you can rule that out.
The cover on the bottom of the phone is where the cell antenna's are any chance you dropped your phone or the bottom took an impact?
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and select phone info. Then scroll down a little bit so we can't see your phone number & imei and take a screen shot. Post that here and let's see what it says. Try to take one with WCDMA preferred and WCDMA only.
Also, can you tell us what country and phone provider you have? Have you checked with your provider to see if there are any issues with your account? Did you buy the phone second hand (ebay or from someone else) or from a cell phone store?
Lol, wtf are you telling him to post his phone number and imei for?

As for the screenshots, the first pic is the WCDMA preferred, the second is the WCDMA only, where it has the inital connection to the 3G network, and the third and last one is after it errors out on WCDMA only (gives unknown).
I bought this phone brand new and imported from overseas from an only cell phone store because the S4 version doesn't exist where I live, so as such claiming warranty isn't exactly going to work, hence I'm seeking help like a madman. My phone can still operate the 3G, as it can connect to the network at all, but then it drops the signal and errors. I'm on amaysim in Australia, which operates off the Optus network over here, but there isn't anything wrong with my account, as my SIM card in my brother's phone can get 3G.
On another note: can you understand what's going on in my logcat? or if not, know anyone who can? It might have some information as to how my phone is stuffing up.
I didn't have a detail read of your posts, least look at the logcats. So I'm guessing. I'd put money this is a radio firmware issue. I think if you install this 'RUU' ( radio firmware + config ) it will work http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2157841 - some nitty gritty examples on page4.
I had a similar problem after going S-OFF, it triggered a mistake I made some days or weeks earlier messing around with firmware -> no radio at all. I also noticed only 3G on Optus (using an Amaysim ) until I updated my baseband.
Did you figure anything else out? Because I am suffering from the same problem unfortunately :/ I've already tried flashing different firmware and radios

Well, I tried your suggestion, using the codf4ther's method, outlined here:
1.) Download the OTA from here: http://fotadl.htc.com/OTA_Ville_U_I...2.35.531.7_release_306848u5s8i4b18xs094yw.zip
2.) Unzip this file (the OTA) and the internal zip file called firmware.zip
3.) Edit the android-info.txt file from the firmware.zip in Notepad++ (or similar text editor) and add "DelCache:1" at the end of the file. This might not be necessary, but I did it on mine.
4.) Create a new zip file that contains only the following files, give it a name less than 8 characters (eg newhboot.zip). rcdata.img and wcnss.img might not be necessary, but from what I've read they go along with the radio, so I included them.
android-info.txt
hboot_ville_1.14.0005_signedbyaa.nb0
radio.img
rcdata.img
wcnss.img
5.) Connect your phone to your computer. Execute the following commands in fastboot. If you get an error that says "FAILED (remote: 90 hboot pre-update! please flush image again immediately)" after the "flash zip" command just do it again..
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip newhboot.zip
fastboot oem boot
6.) If you're on a Sense Jelly Bean rom your wifi will most likely be broken at this point. Find the wifi fix for JB roms in the dev forum and flash it in recovery.

But unfortunately it didn't work: it's still stuck on EDGE, although if I put it on 3G only, it can hang onto the UMTS:3 status (sometimes) for a little while, although it's 'Out of Service,' but then it would go become UNKNOWN:0. I'm guessing this method is similar to flashing a radio through an RUU (?), but considering that an RUU didn't work... yeah...

So we're in the same boat then. And unfortunately no, haven't gotten anywhere; we seem to have gotten a very bad stroke of luck.

I am not sure if this is relevant but I had pretty much same behavior after 4.0.4 Update .. the phone showed 3g for a while but defaults back to Edge connection .... I do not have a solution yet....
Hey guys,
I believe I have exactly the same problem. My phone randomly disconnects from mobile data on wcdma only & gsm / wcdma auto. Apparently only GSM only is working properly. I'm not using a custom RUU.
I'd like to add that the E, H, G, 3G symbols are displayed in the status bar even ater the disconnection occurs. Furthermore it does not display my phone number in settings. I noticed that the likelihood of a disconnect depends on the area (and thus perhaps on the strength of the signal).
Seems like a slightly different problem to me, mine can't stay connected at all on 3G only, and no 3G or H icons come up cuz it can't get on 3G. However I can get on EDGE data, which is really, really slow. :/

[Q] [Help] Skyrocket go down!

hi everyone. I need some help here with my At&t Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. I had my phone unlocked and work on T-mobile GSM fine but I only got EDGE for data. I then flash it with with a T-mobile radio according to the instruction here at XDA forrum to try to get 3G/4G. after flashing the radio the baseband in the phone showed "unknown" and I lost both GSM and EDGE. the phone even didn't recognize my SIM card,I don't know If I did something wrong.
Here How I did
1. I flash CWM 5.8.x
2 I update to CWM 14.x.x touch version
3. Root the phone with SuperSU busy box
4. Flashing tmo_SGH-T989_VK1.zip radio
5. No signal.
It seem to be the radio I tried to flash didn't go in correctly. BTW I still keep the stock ROM form At&T (ICS 4.0.4)
Any one have experienced the same problem like me ?
Thank you very much for helping me out.
Just so I'm clear, you flashed a T-Mobile Only Radio on an A T&T Sim card? Check your APN too.

I flashed T-mobile radio on AT&T phone not SIM card. I lost my original AT&T Radio and new T-mobile radio didn't go in, now the phone doesn't read my T-mobile SIM card. I cannot access mobile network to check APNs without a valid SIM card since the phone doesn't see it.

the phone function was perfectly fine before I flash the radio. of course, no 3G/4G connection on T-mobile
the problem is after flashing custom radio, I have no radio at all. the phone is now a tablet
Did u make a backup? Did u try flashing a new radio? Try odin mabie and go back to stock and try again.

thank you for you suggestion.
I finally understand the problem the phone simply doesn't accept the radio. I flashed the new radio and turn out the original radio was removed and new one didn't go in. when i flashed a full stock ROM the original radio came back. may be the ROM and radio have to be compiled together.

Uh no you have to flash the modem before the ROM to get a good flash from what I've seen. Also I think almost every radio exempting maybe gingerbread radios as I haven't tested them should work on every ROM exempting maybe tw based.

The Rom or radio can be flashed in any sequence. The order they are flashed in has no effect.

Fixed that for you. You forgot to mention that you have to hold your breath while you wipe dalvik 3 times, cache 6 times, factory reset 2 times, perform a backup and then flash a kernel from a different device.
