Tmo OTA questions.. RUU vs. zip.. firmware, etc - HTC Sensation

Couple of noob-ish questions...
In the rooted Tmo thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1654347
there is a flashable zip, and an RUU... what's the difference?
Looks like one has to have the latest firmware if we want to use the zip.. makes me wonder .. how does this work for the OTA folks.. ie. is there a way to do an all-in-one update for those still on S-OFF/rooted GB ROMs?
thanks,
Mike

Ruu is installed on the phone when the phone is connected to a computer since they are usually .exe (executable) file.
A zip file is put on the sd card of the phone and flashed/installed via recovery...for us its through cwm (clockworkmod).

I believe the RUU in that thread contains everything you would need to update from GB to ICS (ROM, firmware, and hboot update)...if you run that you will need to root again, flash recovery, and you will have a locked bootloader i believe.
I wish someone would post an all in one for us GB folks...its kinda funny, it seems everyone and their mother believe everyone to be on ICS, when in fact there is a large number of us still running GB, what a false assumption.

hmm, it sounds like there is more in the RUU than I'd want (already rooted and S-OFF).. and not as much as I'd like in the ZIP (ie. could I get firmware and ROM all in one shot??) LOL, life is always this way

yes i am on stock gb and want to move to the rooted version of the tmobile ics update. My reading so far indicates that the rooted version does not have a radio rom, and i find no guide on how to flash just the official ics ota radio rom.

I got tired of waiting for someone to post an all in one...so here is what i did.
I flashed the 3.32 tmobile firmware package (posted somewhere here) which also included revolutionary hboot 1.27 (i didnt know that till i flashed it), so with one flash you get your upgraded firmware and upgraded hboot
all thats really left to flash is the official tmobile ICS zip file which is also rooted already, and blamo your on ics
as far as radios go, the official ICS RUU did not include a new radio, i dont know if that 3.32 firmware package also had the ICS radio

Nice to see you're not relying on others to do work for you!
However, the RUU does indeed include a radio (11.69A). The firmware you flashed also includes a radio(11.69). The rom you flashed has RIL's that match the 11.69A radio so right now you have unmatched your radio. You need to go to the radio and ril thread and flash the correct radio (11.69A) or flash the ril's that match your current radio (11.69).
The "all in one" package IS the RUU. Firmware is NOT flashed through recovery. The only way to flash them all together is by use of either an RUU or a PG58IMG.zip, and both are flashed through the bootloader.

lol, i shoulda just let the others do the work. Whats the consequence of having "an unmatched radio".

Poor battery life and/or abnormal behavior...
No big deal. Radios and ril's can be found here:

[Q] about hboot and ICS

Dear friends, I am about to install ICS and have read a loft of materials about it. But I have some questions that I couldn't find. Could you please guide me on that.
1. It is required to install a new firmware v. 3.24 in order to run the ROM. Then it is recommended to install new radio. Does firmware include new radio and if not what does it include?
2. As far as I understood new firmware updates hboot making it version 1.24, and it is written in the forums that only 1.17 hboot is unlocked. Could you please tell what difference does it make? Why can't I use fastboot in new hboot and why do I need it for?
3. If I make a full backup of my system does it revert everything back, or hboot and new radio is not the part of a backup?
4. I also have read that if radio and IPL do not match it could brick the device. How do I know what IPL I have and how to match recommended radio with IPL?
5. Once more could you please tell what components does new firmware include and why should I update the firmware in order to run ARDH 6.1.0?
Thank you for your replies, as I'm not doing anything until I clearly understand what I am doing.
Mikhail.
Newest ics. Puts boot up to 1.27 unlocked which means it gives you advance fast boot commands which allows you fasbiot flash radio and splash screens etc. Etc. Same goes for 1.17
Also yes newest firmware does put new radio in
Can't answer all but remember, if you update to hboot 1.27, say goodbye to GB roms as they are not supported on hboot 1.27... You have to stick with ICS roms in future... You can't revert back but that i am not sure about...
You can go can go back long as your super cid

It that right if I say that new firmware updates new hboot and radio? Or there is something else that the new firmware includes? I also a bit confused what all mean by "firmware" because in wiki it means the ROM + firmware and kernel.

Yes it does look at your current hboot and radio once you update to firmware 3.24 you will have hboot 1.27 and radio 11.x. x. X when I mean firmware I mean the pdimg that is needed to flash new ics roms

[Q] What'd be the "firmware" thing?

I mean, I come from desire experience.
There I have SPL, HBOOT, Recovery, Radio and the ROM itself.
Now, why for example Insertcoin is asking me to "upgrade the firmware" with that PG58IMG.ZIP file?
The content seems to be ... scary: hboot, radio, recovery ...
What's the explanation for it?
Shouldn't it be better to say: you need to have this radio and that hboot in order to have this ROM working?
TIA.

I'm really dumb, sorry and still don't understand.
I have those 10 binary IMG files into a 20+ MB PG58IMG.zip (37+ MB uncompressed) "just to have the right environment to run his ROM?
How am I supposed to "undo" such a heavy replacement?
He's replacing both the HBOOT and the recovery! And possibly also the SPL!
The newest InsertCoin is based on ICS, so you need the new Firmware (3.24) in order to make it work.
d/l the PG58IMG.zip from the thread linked in the InsertCoin thread, flash it, then flash the ROM and you are good to go. Just check _before_ that your CID and MID is in the list when flashing the new Firmware.

Hi,
I understand your concern.
You are seriously changing out the guts of your phone.
But if you want ICS, and no one is forcing you to do this, then you need all these changes.
You are stepping up your firmware, radio , hboot etc.
In order to have ICS you must do this.
But you can step back .
Nothing else will work with firmware 3.24
So, you can step down easily to firmware 3.12
GB will work with this.
Although, once you try ICS, you will probably stay with it.

The firmware for ICS roms not only updates hboot and radio it also modifies the partitions on your system. That's why the phone boot loops if you flash an ICS rom onto a gingerbread firmware, the rom looks for data in a partition that doesn't exist. Virtuous inquisition 4.
For sense ics roms id go with mike1986 arhd 6.5.3 rom.
So what u need to do is root ur sensation
Supercid
Flash 4ext recovery. Its an apk and easy to do
Upgrade ur firmware to 3.32. Flash in bootloader.
Need mike1986 superwipe script
Rom of your choice.
Boot into recovery. Flash the superwipe. Then flash ur rom. Quick run down of what you need to do.
Skill required? Not much. The hardest part might be using adb and fastboot commands for the supercid. Other than that its easy as pie

thanks so much,so now the supercid i read up on it while requiring s-off and root thats alil confusing but ill read up on it again and the superwipe ive been seeing that on rom threads "flash superwipe" what is that and where would i get it?
and i need a big help,i tried upgrading my firmware to 3.32 and it said "wrong cid" "fail" now its stuck on the htc logo and bootloops help please :'(
Superwipe is down toward the bottom of OP of this thread. It leaves you with a very very clean phone. So no apps, no user data, no ROM. You'd want to have a nandroid backup at the very least before superwiping, as well as titanium backup for your apps etc. You just flash superwipe from recovery like a ROM (install .zip from sdcard).
Sounds like you've got hold of the wrong firmware for your CID. So you either need to know your CID (if you've got your head around adb and fastboot commands, "fastboot getvar cid" will get that for you) and find the right firmware, or supercid your phone so you can use any firmware. Go to this thread for firmware.
For your firmware there's a file,
android.txt, that has a list of CIDs. The T-Mobile CID usually isn't in it. If you do the superCID you shouldn't have to worry about it. Other wise you have to open the file located in the PGM581000 file and add CIDT-MO010 to the txt file. Either way make sure you delete the PGM file immediately after you flash it.
Sent from my HTC Sensation ICS 4.0.3 ARHD 6.5.3XE. Rockin'
Go to the dev thread for ROMs, ARHD is my preference. Good directions and all the files you need linked right there. Well most ROM threads are that way but this ROM and firmware are smooth and flawless.

This is misleading and not really true. First of all, VI is not true AOSP but Sense with most of the obviously sense parts removed. Secondly OpenSensation CM9 is hands down the best true AOSP rom and now that it has bluetooth and 1080p camcorder there's virtually no reason to use a senseless sense rom like vi.

CID is carrier identification. The thread you downloaded your T-Mobile firmware from contains firmwares for a variety of CIDs, in other words, specific to whichever carrier your phone came from. SuperCID removes that form of 'branding' and allows you to flash any firmware file, if you look through the list of firmware they can all be flashed to a device with CID 11111111. So essentially we superCID for convenience.
SuperCID has no bearing on what ROMs you can flash, the only consideration is that a particular ROM will require a certain firmware, eg. ICS ROMs need 3.12 base or higher.

Almost. SuperCID and custom recovery you can do no worries. Firmware upgrade will depend on what stock ROM is currently installed, if you flash firmware that your stock ROM isn't compatible with you will get bootloops and most likely have to downgrade. So personally I wouldn't be looking to upgrade firmware until you intend to flash a ROM that requires it. At that point you'll want a custom recovery anyway so it won't hurt to install that now.

Thanks. I'm currently on the T-Mobile Sensation 4G stock ROM S-Off/Rooted. Will going to the 3.32 firmware wipe the stock ROM or cause bootloops for sure?
I also have ClockWork Recovery from a really long time ago. Using ROM Manager to flash a new recovery (trying to update) does nothing. Why does that happen? Perhaps my recovery is too old?

I'm would assume your 4G would already be running ICS? In which case you probably already have up-to-date firmware installed. The firmware update generally applies for people coming from GB to ICS. Go to Settings/About Phone/Software Information/More/Build Number and see what numbers you have there.
Flashing firmware will not wipe your ROM, the worst that will happen is bootloops if the firmware and ROM aren't compatible.
The recovery you have now shouldn't stop you from flashing a new one, instead of using ROM Manager try downloading 4ext from the Play Store and see how that goes.

[Q] Cant flash Coindroid rom or any rom !!

Hi All, hopefully i am in the right place.
I have been trying to flash a CoinDroid_V1.5.2 on my Htc Sensation (not a 4g) which is locked to Telstra (Australian telco)
My specs as follows:
Android version: 2.3.4 (ginberbread)
sense: 3.0
Software number: 1.45.841.5
Hboot-S-off: 1.17 (phone is rooted)
cid: 11111111 (i changed the cid using information ive founded on this website)
midG5811000
4EXT Recovery tool installed as well
radio: 10.14.9035.01_m[, tried to flash to radio 11 but the phone kept restaring itself after 5 minutes, so i downgraded it, working fine now.
I have download a file called Android revolution hd super wipe, also the PG58IMG image file, everything that you might think off, but still does not work
I have tried to install the coindroid from the 4EXT utility program, selected coindroid 1.5.2 and started to flash, everything fine so far, but when it finishes i restart the phone and does not load up the rom, it keeps rebooting itself everytime, i have also tried using a different rom called Android_Revolution_HD-Sensation_6.6.4_XE and the screen gets stuck on the beats audio, does not go further than that.
Phone is rooted, s-off working, clockwordmod, 4EXT utility loads up as well...
I dont know what i am doing wrong here, can someone help me out here?
I have also tried doing this method in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232107
Which basically unlocks your phone, tried it and the phone was unlocked but all my apps and configuration was gone, so went back to the s-off to restore(which did not load the 4ext) and tried to restore my stock rom from s-off, hoping that i can still use it with the phone unlocked. Did not worked at all. It was a miracle that after trying to install the coindroid and failed again, the 4ext when back alive again and i was able to restore the stock rom which works.
Can someone tell me please, what i have done wrong?? i have followed all the necessary steps and yet cant flash any rom
Thanks to all for helping the new newbie
Hi,
Regarding CoinDroid, most links are broken.
Re-download and verify md5 sum.
Alternatively try OrDroid.
Same developer and as I see almost the same rom.
And update hboot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1656867
You didn't follow all necessary steps. You gotta flash 3.3x.xxx.x firmware for ics. Your 1.45.xxx.x firmware you have now is for gb. That's why it wont boot.

This could be also my problem, however my phone boots fine.
Unfortunately I have no idea where to verify the firmware version. Could you please advise?
Settings/about phone/software information/software number. Ics roms will have 3.xx.xxx.xx software number and gb will have 1.xx.xxx.xx. 3rd post down in sensation general forum will have all the info about firmware that you need. You gotta flash firmware that matches the rom you want. You just download it and flash it before you flash the rom.
For me that's OrDroid 6.0.0...
thank you

Hi,
Regarding CoinDroid, most links are broken.
Re-download and verify md5 sum.
Alternatively try OrDroid.
Same developer and as I see almost the same rom.
And update hboot

My mid is: PG5811000
Telco company called : Telstra
my cidnum i dont know which it is, can you give a hand mate?
Also, if a flashed the firmware to ics, can i still be using the normal stock or i have to flash it as well?
According to your first post your cid is 11111111 (supercid). You should be able to use any one of the 3.32 firmware. Your rom has to match the firmware.
yes, it's 11111111

Yes, i downloaded an app called CID GETTER, before i flashed, it said that my cid was TELST001, but now shows 11111111.
My stock rom wont work if i flashed the new Firmware, because it gingerbread and not Ice cream sandwich? Is that correct? Sorry for repeating myself, i just want to get it right.
Regarding the CoinDroid_V1.5.2 or the Android_Revolution_HD-Sensation_6.6.4_XE, they all shall work once i flashed the new firmware because booth are ICS, right?
Thanks mate, i am actually downloading this Firware: cidnum: TELST001
from the website you gave me.
What you reckon?
Ps: Should i update the radio too? or the new rom will update it for me?? This is getting annoying!
Ps1: Once i download the file(firmware) should i flash it trough clockwork recovery or EXT4 ? I am not sure about that.
Thanks for all the helpers out there.

Flashing Firmware Updates both the bootloader/hboot and radio too.. So you need not worry about radio and all
After you flash this firmware tou can't run your current gb rom. As it's not compatible.. And only ics rom runs.. So after flashing the firmware flash the coindroid/ordroid rom and then you are good to go
Now regarding firmware flashing.. It will be PG58IMG file.. so the method of flashing will be different.. Please for instructions/steps on how to flash the firmware please check in the thread from where you downloaded. The steps are given there

Which rom to start with?

Thank you so much, it's all clear now.
I have to flash the firmware (anyone in my case due that my sensation is supercid) Using S-off
Flash then the superwipe for the sensation
Flash the Rom that you like
And that's my problem come, i dont know which rom to start with
I have narrowed my search to this 3:
Coindroid v 1.5.2 ( I read that it's quite a good one)
Ordroid v 5.02 (I have not seen any videos on youtube with the looks of it)
Android_Revolution_HD-Sensation_6.6.4_XE (A good choice as well)
From this 3 roms, which is the latest one? And which one is the one that will work out of the box without you trying to fix either the wifi or something like that
Thanks to all for their responses.
Coindroid and ordroid are same.. I mean coindroid became ordroid.. So ordroid is like an update to coindroid.. And basically these are sense 4 ported rom's.. So they are bound to have some issues.. I heard hot spot and Bluetooth are not working properly.. In OP of the thread the bugs are mentioned... So if you want to try sense 4 go for that
The other one ARHD is pretty stable... This comes under your out of box scenario also INSERT COIN comes under this case...
I'm using IC now and I'm pretty happy with it

So you're running clockwork mod recovery while using the 4ext recovery utility? Before updating use the.utility to flash 4ext recovery, if you flash ordroid there is already the option to superwipe built in when flashing. Be sure to flash 4ext

Rooted and S-OFF Tmobile stock rom. How to get ICS?

ClockwordMod Recovery v4.0.1.5
Android version 2.3.3
HTC sense 3.0
Software version 1.29.531.2
Kernel 2.6.35.10-gb7a86da
Can anyone give me some instructions or link on how to upgrade to the latest USA T-mobile ICS Rom?
Thank you.
Same here. I've read so many threads, I'm confused as to which procedure to follow...
I have:
Android 2.3.4 with Sense 3.0 (Stock Tmobile ROM)
HBoot: 1.17.1111
ClockworkMod: 5.0.0.8
Could some post the steps to install the stock TMobile ICS onto the rooted phone?
First of all you have to get rid of CWM to get OTA to install.
In this case you have to back up everything and flush T-mo RUU. It will bring your phone to stock condition with HTC recovery. Then go to Settings and check for HTC updates.
S-OFF does not matter. ICS installs fine with S-OFF.
Here where you can find T-mo RUU: Thanks to original poster!
I saw 3 files on that link to RUU. Which one to use to flash?
What do I have to backup from the current phone?

This is the link to RUU: LINK
Back up everything you use, contacts, apps, oh.... I especially backed up my CoPilot... Whatever you think you like, Angry Birds???? LOL Especially if you beat a lot of levels, then back up data.... won't need to start from scratch...LOL
Emails, SMS/MMS... oh well..what you care about. Use Titanium Backup.
Don't forget your Google account, so you won't need to create new one. As you flash RUU yer phone gonna be at point 0.. You'll have to go through initial sign in and so on....
Good luck!!!
Thanks to T-Macgnolia for the RUU!!!
That link goes to the Gingerbread RUU.
Is there a way to install a TMobile ICS update without using the OTA update?
Like update firmware and then the ROM or something???
I read several pages here, but I'm still uncertain what to do.

Oh... well.....
What can I say...... You have to be on stock GB ROM in order to get ICS OTA update.
And yes.... Steve0007 posted rooted version of T-mo ICS update. You might try to flush that one.
I dont mind if its not OTA, I just want to update to ICS. I think the link I listed above is to the TMobile ICS file, but I'm not sure how to install it.

Here's what I did:
I downloaded the official RUU for T-Mobiles Sensation 4G and flashed it. And bam, ICS on my phone. It does wipe the phone so backup your stuff. I did take out my SD card so I don't know if it touches it or not. Buy its that easy. And I'm still S-Off by the way

No the RUU does not do anything to the SD card, it only deals with the NAND memory of the device.
For those of you out there that do not know what an RUU is please read the quoted post below
T-Macgnolia said:
RUU stands for ROM Update Utility. This is a utility that is run via a .exe file that is used to flash a stock ROM, stock radio, stock splash screen, stock recovery, and stock firmware of a device. The utility performs a cleaning of the NAND memory of the device before flashing the included stock software. So a RUU is often suggested as a way fix common problems and to unroot a device. The utility also runs a set of checks on a thea device before flashing such as CID (Carrier Identification), battery level check, and firmware version check.
A custom RUU is does the same as a RUU but it has been modified to not run the CID check and sometimes other security checks. You can flash custom ROMs, different radio versions, splash screens, and firmwares. You can even use a custom RUU to flash each of these individually.
