[Q] Should I wait to install new ICS firmware for CM9 - HTC Sensation

So just as I was about to go through all the steps to install ICS firmware for the CM9 nightly (using the steps in the guide for ICS and ARHD), then I see that TMOUS is going to be to be pushing the official firmware OTA.
Does that have any implications such as there may be some differences so I should wait until that version is deciphered for flashing? Or something else I should take into account but don't see cause I'm newbish?
Right now im on 2.3.7 from CM7
I am under the impression its ok to ask newb question in this particular forum....if not sorry!
EDIT im seeing this posted up today [ROM] HTC TMOUS Stock ICS *RELEASE* 3.32.531.14 (Flashable | Untouched | Rooted)...should i follow the same instructions on ICS ARHD just using the above file or can i just install 4ext and then flash? lol maybe i should just wait till the dust settles on the events of today

Same question, I'm afraid of losing root and s-off as well, someone help us plz

Cm9 is AOSP based and might have some bugs. Official will have Sense. It's down to personal preference really. I personally use AOKP and love it

I know the difference one is sense and the other is aosp based. i guess my question is that since I have to upgrade my to ICS firmware to flash CM9 should I be using the guide and links to do so on the ARHD ICS post or follow a different method, or wait a couple of days since the firmware is gonna be updated.
now that i think about it i bet someone will write a guide specifically for CM9 so i should just be quiet and patient.
Update: As much as i want to flash cm9 asap i think I am going to take it slow and start with upgrading from cwm to 4ext before i get ahead of myself. upon review i see my post belongs in the help section of the QA and not as its own post so sorry for the clutter.
last question...i loved DOS why is adb so scary to me jk

[Q] New to Sensation

So i just switched my HD2 to a HTC sensation. whats the need a link for a root method, thanks
It is one of the first threads in Sensation Android Development sub-forum. Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
thanks alot
what do u like/recommend for sense/non-sense ROMs?
(prefer stability over eyecandy)
Honestly, I decided to S-OFF and root my Sensation because of MIUI rom which is non-sense rom and still in beta version. However updates appears every week and devs tries to eliminate known bugs as soon as possible. In near future I'm not going to switch it to other rom.
I have no experience with other roms but I read a lot of flattering opinions about Android Revolution HD rom (sense as well as non-sense) that is running fast and smooth, without major issues.
I hope you will find something suitable for you, there is a lot of them to choose.
This link seems to explain things well, have people followed this guide?
http://theunlockr.com/2011/08/02/ho...android-phone-using-the-revolutionary-method/
i have miui on my hd2, i love it, solid and very user friendly
If MIUI beta version for Sensation won't bother you - I advise you to flash it
thanks, gonna be a long night tonight, lol

I have a rooted HTC Sensation, is it ok to update to stock 4.0?

So my friend rooted my phone for me and installed a custom rom that supports a language I needed (arabic).
It turns out that the 4.0 carries that language and I have been having a lot of problem with the current rom. If I want to upgrade to 4.0 how can go on with this?
Also, I would like to stay rooted because from what I understand, if I am rooted the phone is unlocked and I am planning on going overseas for a month and so it would be nice to have a unlocked phone with me.
I really appreciate all the help guys thanks!
First of all, there is no stock 4.0, unless you mean ICS 4.0.x. Because of the vague information, I assumed you meant sense 4.0.
Second of all, you need to provide some info, and why can't your friend fix it for you? I have no idea what's currently on your phone. If you're running gingerbread, then you'll have to do a firmware update + rom update. You've provided us the fact that your friend put a rom on there for you. That does not help one bit. What rom? and again, why can't he fix it? Normally, it's pretty easy to update the rom, there are tons of instructions provided in the forums. I would suggest looking around. The only hard part for you may be the firmware updating... Since you appear to have no idea what rom you're running, myself and others won't know how to help at all. You want to update to this "4.0" with little to no information provided. Fyi, phone rooted does not mean the phone is unlocked. You'll have to double check that, Good luck!
ps. your title is even more confusing. Are you getting the 4.0 OTA and asking if it's okay to update? or are you asking HOW to update? I'm assuming you're asking how to update lol
Ermm, this type of question (correcting: exactly this question) had been asked (and answered) a couple of times

I apologize for being vague here are info on my phone.
I am on Android Version 2.3.7
Baseband version: 10.56.9035.00
Kernal Version 2.6.35.13_CyangenMod+
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.1.0-SelfKANG10-Sensation
Build Number: GRJ22
I am trying to update to the new version which is ICS for my sensation. I am not sure if it's out or not though.
I guess my question is:
Do I have to unroot my phone to use ICS?
if not, can you please point me to where I can follow a guide to do this?

Since you are unsure of what you are doing, I wouldn't advise you to try since you do run the risk of "Bricking" your device if something goes wrong - Your Choice!
Having stated that, if you really do want to install ICS:
1. Install firmware 3.32 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
2. Install a CUSTOM Recovery.
3. Choose your ROM - There are a few Sense 3.6 ROMs but no Sense 4.0 with no bugs (FAIK).
You should really Search the Development thread and choose a ROM which suits YOU as everyones needs/wants are slightly different. Most ROMs tell you what you need to install and there already guides on how to do it.
You could follow the guide from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472298
Here are also a couple of good thread with tons of info:

ROOTING only unlocks the ability to change files stored anywhere on the phone, you need to SIM UNLOCK if you intend to use a different carrier or possibly in a different country. There is a thread in development on how to do this for free too!!!
Hope this helps

Not sure why you'd want to do this, when you can just install a room based off of the official release like ARHD. You'd retain root and also get all the awesome features included in the ROM that HTC won't add in there.

I've also heard of phones being severely bricked after updating from stock. Actually, I've worked on them. They were galaxy s prevails, though

[Q] Kernel Source Code from htcDev

Guys,
I just bought Desire S 2 days ago. It came with GB 2.3 & sense 2.1. I just checked out http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads/ & it has kernel source code for Desire S. Does this mean, I can flash the kernel to my device & it will be updated to GB 2.6.3?
Does kernel means android version here ??
Your device already contains the kernel. You can check for updates from your Settings -> About -> Software update it will pop-up if there is any. On stock phone there is no need to flash anything it comes out of the box
And the android version is generally defined by the OS not by the kernel

I got that but my question is , if I flash the kernel(2.6.5) I downloaded from htcdev site, will this update my gingerbread from 2.3 to 2.6.5 or I could update it only over OTA. ?

What you're seeing on the HCDev site is the kernel source code... that is used by kernel devs to cook up kernels... you can't as an end user just flash the entire source!! It's not the kernel, it's the source. And anyway, kernel has nothing to do with upgrading you to a higher version of any OS... that's what a ROM does.
If you're asking these sort of questions, you hazard a very big chance of bricking your 2 day old device, so as a friendly advice, I'd suggest you do a looooot of reading in the Index and the Guide threads before attempting any kind of flashing. From your posts, I see you're pretty inexperienced with android and a good knowledge base built before attempting all sorts of crazy flashing will keep your device safe from inadvertent bricking.
Read a bit more...ask questions and get answers...and then it'll be happy flashing for you!:good:
BTW, have you even S-off'ed and rooted your device? How were you planning to flash the kernel (...source!!):cyclops:

Thanks. that really helped. And yes I am noob with android. I had an LG optimus black few months ago & it did not had anything like S-ON or S-OFF. I just rooted it & used to flash a lot of ROMS.
I think I need to read a lot about Desire S before I flash anything.
One more question, is there any other way to officially update to GB 2.5 apart from OTA. I have a very slow 2g connection on my device & it will take forever to download some 230 MB of data.
Thanks again.

Apart from updating via ota, there is no 'official' way of updating to a higher os. You don't have to download the ota over your mobile data connection. Wi-Fi is always preferred.
I would still recommend getting s-off and then flashing custom Roms. It is way better and more efficient than official updates which always leave out some thing to be desired. Custom Roms like Endymion take care of all those issues.

How what? All you need is to unlock bootloader, flash custom recovery and then you could flash whatever ROM you want.

No there isn't a pure google based rom yet for the oneS . Your best option for now is the cyanogenmod 10 rom, which look very close to stock google.

To sum up what was mentioned...
No, there is not currently a pure, stock, AOSP rom for the 1S. Cyanogenmod 10 is the closest you can get, as it looks and operates the most like stock, however has many additional features (both visual and performance wise). Here is the link to download CM10 for our device http://get.cm/?device=ville .
Note: CM is releasing "nightlies" which means pretty much everyday an updated rom is released to fix or add features. As of right now, the rom works great, however there are some issues with the camera (video camera does not work properly, although there is a fix).
If you have not flashed a rom to your 1S yet, you will have to do quite a bit of research to get it done. This requires unlocking your bootloader through the HTCdev website, and downloading and installing several files before you can install a new rom. This guide can help you http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583427 .
Hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions you may have.
BTW, yes Q&A would have been the correct section, but don't sweat it. Brandonrz is apparently disturbed in some manner.

need help installing new roms

Okay I see all these rooms I like I have cm recovery 5.0.2.7 and I need a jelly bean or ice cream sandwich from to flash it and everyone I try just says failed . So can some give me a from that's self explanitory and easy to install for my Samsung infuse
OK..first step
Reading the OP of the ROM you want to try.. follow from there..
Really though.. a little more info would be helpful..
What version are you currently on, rooted, know how to restore a soft brick if need be, bank and routing number, etc..
Its powered by Jellybeaned AOKP!

I'm running Miui 2.1 I believe . And it is rooted .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658725 this is the one I want but I need step by step on how to do it witith what I have now
now i am not the most experienced on here and there is a lot that i am not sure how to do, but i have managed to get myself out of some tight spots before. maybe i am not the person for advice, but then again maybe someone with same experience level is not such a bad idea.
three things i look for....
1. the past- how old is the ROM you are looking at? if its too old, you may not have the support.
2. the present- even if you decide on an older ROM, i go to the last page and start reading backwards. this gives me an idea as to the most recent problems that exist and whether or not they are getting fixed.
3. the future- there is a lot of new development going on with ICS and now Jelly Bean. these operating systems may be the present for some other phones, but it is the future for the Infuse. some amazing young minds who are pulling off some rapid development.
for me, if the OP seems a little too complicated for me, i dont bother. cant go wrong with the Super Everything Thread.
i personally have not used MIUI, simply because the directions were, lets say, a little iffy for me.
i have had a lot of luck with anything Paranoid Android, CM10, YumaPorn and now the Cypher ROM. there are some other GB based ROMS too and all these you seem to get great support with.
so good luck, to me its like buying a car, first thing you need to figure out is what you are looking to get out of it and does it have the options you want.
i hope i was of some help and made some sense

Since it looks like you want to go to a JellyBean rom, and you're on Froyo or Gingerbread (Not sure which MIUI 2.1 used...), then perhaps these steps will help you:
How To Flash JB
CWM 5.x comes in JB, I believe... Its the Blue CWM that gives you the "rainbow" distortion if you don't have GB Bootloaders...
Make sure that you are downloading all files needed and following all the instructions one by one and if you cant do it for any reason dont risk it. heres a good jb rom that i am running.
