HTC Inspire Review

I have had the Inspire for a few days and I thought I'd give my 2 cents. Just to give you some background, I have had dozens of smartphones. I benched my iPhone 4 for this phone.
Initially, my main concern was battery life. I'm happy to report that it's not an issue. While 1250 maH sounds like fail for an Android device with a 4.3" screen, it's obvious that the next gen Snapdragon is very good at keeping power consumption to a minimum. I unplugged the phone from it's charger this morning at 6 a.m. and at 10 p.m., I still had 30% battery. I had two lengthy calls and used the phone plenty to check e-mail and surf the web. I also streamed Slacker for a while. While I would feel more comfortable with a 1500 maH battery in the phone, the 1250 seems to be sufficient. I actually thought HTC was crazy when I originally read the specs.
Loving the new Sense. Not just the performance enhancements (it's fast), but the little things like the ability to skin and theme the device. Unlike Motoblur, Sense UI actually enhances Android. I have always felt this way, having had several HTC Android devices, but now I feel more so.
Screen is great. I don't like that you can see so many of the capacitive screen dots at times, but I can live with it. The screen is super responsive and very clear.
The Camera is actually really good. The main reason I held onto my iPhone 4 for so long was for the Camera. Every phone I have tried (I'm looking at you, Captivate) has let me down in the Camera department, but so far, I find the Inspire's Camera to be very sufficient. I love the interface and all of the effects, and the picture quality is excellent. Overall, the iPhone 4 is still slightly better, but HTC definitely put a good camera in this phone. It's the first phone since iPhone 4 that I actually have confidence in the picture quality (Samsung Focus was close) and wouldn't hesitate to use as a standalone camera. As some reviews have stated, the flash does make some night shots yellow, but this only appears to be true of fairly close-up shots.
Honestly, the only thing I wish this phone had was a Front Facing Camera. As little as I used it, it was just nice to know I had it on my iPhone 4. Still, I wouldn't trade this for an Atrix. I know that the phone will be more stable, functional, and I'll get an update to Android faster with HTC. Motorola soured me when I had my Droid X and proved that they shouldn't be allowed to mess with software.
Forget dual core. While the specs of the Atrix are impressive, I find this phone to be very responsive and smooth. It's clear that the next gen Snapdragon is more than sufficient for the task.
My only real wish with this phone is that I could uninstall ALL of the bloatware. I hate that about Android. WP7 lets you uninstall all apps and iPhone doesn't allow any in the first place. Android seems to be the whipping boy of carriers. I hate that the apps are ROM locked and that you have to root to get rid of them. This is especially true of the AT&T Navigator, which is pointless on Android in the first place. It's deeply integrated, too, so it shows up as an option when you click on a contact (use AT&T Navigator to get you to their address). I could hide these apps with Launcher Pro, but I shouldn't have to. AT&T disabling app side-loading is crap, too. We can always use side-load wonder machine (thank you Android Central), but disabling the feature is like taking a steaming dump on what Android is about (openness) to me.
Still, overall, I feel this is one of the best devices available on AT&T, and the only real Android option. Samsung needs to sort out their GPS issues (no, the software fix didn't resolve it. The issue is bad hardware) and Motorola (looking at you, Atrix) always manages to ruin perfectly good hardware with an encrypted bootloader and buggy software "enhancements". If you don't absolutely need a FFC, then this is your #1 Android choice on AT&T.
Sorry for the long-winded post. I originally set out to say "hey, the battery life really is good" and got carried away.

But as I may have to have a FFC I'm going to keep my iphone 4 around for a while.
I still can't believe that I may actually have to have a FFC soon. HAHA whatever my company is odd.
I was running the DesireZ Rom on my HD2 and I'm quite pleased with how this runs in stock form. I can't wait to get rid of the junk.

Coming from an HTC Aria, I also had concerns about battery life but was immediately impressed when I started using the Inspire. My first run of the battery from a full charge was about 28 hours which included phone calls, texts, web, pandora and much camera and video use at a concert. I got this phone expecting it to only last 12 hours max but was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a lot of battery drain even when not in use but that hasn't been the case at all. Battery consumption remains relatively untouched when the phone is not in use. I turn off data, gps and wifi unless I need them; I don't need things syncing constantly. I also keep the screen brightness at about 40%. I can't wait to see even better performance once I root and install a custom ROM.

I should also mention that the Inspire charges very quickly, at least as fast as an iPhone and much faster than any of the Galaxy S phones.

One more update: I said in my review that the only thing I really missed was a FFC and the only thing I really used that for was self portraits.
I just discovered in the camera app on the Inspire, not only a self-timer (yay), but a "self portrait" setting. The self portrait setting automatically uses face detection to take the picture after you turn the phone around. I just tested it and the picture came out perfect.
I'm officially sold on this phone.

That was totally my exact feelings. I love this phone! I sold my Iphone 4 for 445 and am so glad I exchanged the Captivate for this baby. The pictures are awesome! The speed is great and yes, there are apps I miss on Itunes, but my hubby has an Iphone 3gs...

For self-portrait? It's built into the camera software. You launch the camera, then push menu and it's the first option.

I tried playing with it but I'm a bear of little brain do I select self portrait then press the shutter then turn the camera around? Or turn the camera around and try to find the shutter button when I can't see it?

You don't have to push any buttons. After you select self portrait, just turn the phone around and try to hold it steady while it finds your face. There needs to be at least decent light for it to work.

Nope same problem all ATT phones have on T-Mob. The data is using the wrong radio frequency to be 3G it will be edge only.

I tried out the demo in an AT&T store yesterday and I really love it. My one problem with it was the ring around the camera feels....wrong. I don't know if it was just that unit but you could turn it and it made it feel cheap. This isn't a big enough problem to keep me from buying this phone once my birthday comes around in April but it bothered me. Anyone else notice this?

I'd need a pair of needle nose pliers to even begin to move mine. Sounds like the demo unit has seen some battle action.

I don't particularly like the way it protrudes, but I can live with it. A case would take care of that (it would even out the back so it was flush with the camera protrusion), but I don't like using cases on my phones.
You also have to be careful when you set it down, or it'll scratch the metal ring around the camera. While this protects the lens, it'll decrease the value later if you want to sell it. Otherwise, I love the build quality.
The only issue I have had is that the Messaging app seems to lock up my phone completely every so often. I haven't tried an alternative, like Handcent to see if the issue persists. I also couldn't place a call or get data today until I reset the connection (airplane on/off), which is a first for me.
Overall, pretty minor bugs for a very nice phone.

After having tried it in low-ish light, I recommend LOTS of light, and disabling the flash.
Those spots in front of my eyes are laughing at me.

Long road from Inspire to Atrix and back again

Hello all!
I've had the daunting task to pick between these two phones for the last couple days. I went into the store to actually get the devices in my hand and fully expected to walk out with the Atrix. I've always had a soft spot for HTC, ever since their WoMo phones. I saw the Inspire and was super impressed at how solid the phone felt in my hand. The phone felt very responsive, and I already knew the XDA Inspire team was cranking out some awesome stuff.
I then grabbed the Atrix and was not nearly as wow'd as I had expected to be. I've been following the phone since it's announcement, and pretty much had made up my mind on the spot to pick it up. After spending a half hour goofing around with both phones, I decided the Inspire really won my heart.
Then it happened... The cold sweats... The tossing and turning in bed at night. Images of the Atrix's Tegra 2 laying waste to the earth and doing vile things to my Inspire. My horrid indecision had struck. I decided that I had obviously made the wrong choice, so the next morning I headed off to the store and bought an Atrix without returning my perfectly set up Inspire. I wanted to play with them both side by side and just return whichever one didn't make me happy.
That was a bit over 24 hours ago. After spending the last day with both of the handsets, I am closer to a decision, but it's damn tough. My overall thoughts and struggles follow:
Motorola Atrix:
-Pros:
- Bright, higher resolution screen
- Dual Core processor (even though I thought the experience was pretty weak)
- Battery (theoretical, as I haven't had it long enough to fully experience)
- This goes to the hardware again, but this phone is quite a bit more future proof.
- The handset is light enough to not remind you it's in your pocket at every step.
- GPS (This is the most rock solid phone GPS I've ever used)
- Incredibly loud speaker
- Tons of ram
- HDMI out
-Cons:
- Cheaper build quality (I feel like I need to qualify this. The phone feels solid, but the battery door is, for lack of a better word, brittle)
- Very poor color representation on the otherwise beautiful screen.
- MotoBlur - This is just a very inelegant, unrefined overlay...
- Strange compatibility issues with certain apps
- multiple force closes
- Weak social media integration
- Odd bouts of lag when least expected
- Locked Bootloader (most don't care about this, but it matters when you have a primary developer that has a history of slow patches, feature adds, and os releases.
- Chicklet keyboard is a touch small for me and requires some focus to not miss type.
**FOLLOW-UP**
- I've removed the call quality knock from the Atrix device. It turns out it was entirely my own fault, and while some people, including Motorola, are reporting issues with sound quality on some devices, mine isn't one of them.
HTC Inspire:
-Pros:
- Excellent build quality (the aluminum uni-body is a joy to hold, and has the extra added benefit of being able to be used to fend off an attacker)
- Beautiful 4.3" screen (Yes, it is big, but I'm a fan)
- Sense (I'm not a fan of these proprietary UI's, but Sense shows that HTC can offer up an experience that is easy to like, and provide an attractive interface for a phone OS that is sometimes described as clinical looking)
- The brilliant development community (currently running CoreDroid /drool)
- Very snappy performance from the second gen Snapdragon CPU
- Tons of ram (Not as much as the Atrix, but enough to be a "ton" in my eyes)
- Lovely camera (I used to not care, but I have a new son, so suddenly a camera climbed up the ladder of important features)
- Fantastic out of the box social media integration
- Has that "Just works like it should" feel to it.
- Very clear call quality
- Second best phone gps I've used
-Cons:
- The screen washes out to a grey slab in direct sunlight
- Stock battery life is horrid
- "Electric Razor" ear screen can have some jagged edges and chafe your ear
- Battery door was a ridiculous design decision
- Very current gen hardware (doesn't mean a whole lot if you're not going to be riding this phone for the next two years, but a new day has dawned and it's name is "Multi-core")
- Stock external speaker/notification volume super weak
- odd placement of the number button on the keyboard (thanks iPhone for etching that into my brain)
- recessed power and volume buttons can be a bit tough to find.
- No internal storage (this is just ridiculous)
- Relatively weak GPU
There you have it. That's what I've come up with so far. At the moment, I'm leaning toward the Inspire, as so many of those issues can be (and have been) corrected through roms. In the end, I just don't really get the warm fuzzies from the Atrix. I feel like it's a brilliant set of components tied together with a really sorry software suite, and a manufacturer that doesn't really understand the strengths of their chosen platform, or the customers that choose it.
I will continue carrying both of the devices for the next couple days, but at the moment, the winner is most definitely the Inspire in my eyes. It just feels like it's been polished to a wonderful android flavored candy shine, and with the community behind it, there's really nothing I feel the device won't be able to handle for quite some time.

get the inspire if you want good development and an array of different roms/kernels to choose from. get the atrix if you just wanna use ur phone for a phone and nothing else.

this is BY FAR the best breakdown i have seen thus far. Even better than those from mobile websites and such. Nice job man.
I have a lot more to say, but i think i will just wait until i wake up i'm way too tired right now lol

Didn't he just say that the actual phone part was where the atrix was at it's weakest?

When I said that I meant pretty much very limited development until/if they crack the locked bootloader... Custom roms can only get u so far... Kernels help maximize phone performance

OP, the Inspire has about 1.2 GB of internal storage (storage properties shows it as 1.13 GB).

Yeah I just got my Inspire today and coming from a Captivate, the only real ***** I have about it is the stupid battery door (who the **** thought that one up?!! I better get some more battery door replacements because its inevitable I'm going to **** this one up in no time) and the Adreno 205 is underperforming compared to the beastly SGX540 in the Captivate. Oh and the *LIE* that it has 4GB of internal storage - all ROMs report 1GB so where did the other 3GB go, HTC?!
Other than that... you can't beat 15 seconds from HTC screen to a working desktop, MIUI is the absolute bees ****ing knees of ROMs - HTC could take a lesson on how to build a UI from the MIUI project. I'd actually pay money for this and I don't pay money for ANYTHING.
Dualcore is great and all but seriously, we have a hard enough time getting iPhone developers to port their apps to Android in the first place. All I see a dual-core doing is sitting there pretty much unused unless it is an Android native application. The Adreno 205 actually hasn't been optimized as well as it could be (if you want an example, run the GLBenchmark 2.0 on it and look at all the missing polygons - BAD DRIVERS - but that's par for the course with HTC as those of us who had WinMo phones know - anyone remember that entirely disabled ATi chip in the Mogul and Touch, Touch Pro?? All we needed was drivers. At least in this case, we *HAVE* drivers unlike the Imageon series of phones HTC released and didn't get drivers made for) and from looking at various benchmarks online, it could probably take the SGX540 to task if the drivers were built to take full advantage of all the rendering capabilities the chip actually has.
I just don't see dualcore taking off until Apple releases a dualcore iPhone - most likely this June/July - until then, developers aren't going to re-code the applications they are already porting from Apple to Android in the first place, in order to support the needs of dual-core.
I'm very happy with my Inspire, especially after figuring out how to get HSUPA working with MIUI, and coming from a Captivate - that's saying a lot - the Captivate is a great device when you hack the living hell out of it.
The only other ***** is the fact they advertise 4GB of internal storage but every ROM including the stock one says 1GB. WTF at&t and HTC?

i went through the same cycle as the OP: got the inspire, was obsessed with the atrix (or it's capabilities), returned the inspire, got an atrix and bricked it in less than 2 hours trying to copy font files, got a replacement and bricked it the next day before i concluded "i couldn't make it mine". got a 3rd one, left it pretty much stock and kept it for a week before exchanging for an inspire because of in-call audio quality. (people complained that i sounded muffled. this was before Moto acknowledged the issue). i still peek at the atrix forums to see if things have changed, but nothing there has convinced me to reconsider the atrix.
i'm currently running Spike_M's Saga GB 2.3.3 port for the Desire HD (with Inspire audio quality tweaks) and i'm satisfied with my decision to stick with the Inspire. one obvious tradeoff is battery life. i've got another stock battery (as backup) and i typically charge my phone for 1-3 hrs during the workday to get me through the day. this is in addition to starting the day with a full battery.

I had the same feelings. I used both the atrix and inspire from their release dates and I really wanted to love the atrix but it just didn't impress or wow me, while the inspire did. I'll be using the inspire until further notice.

It pretty much seems like the Atrix is the (commonly) lousy beginning of a next generation of devices while the Inspire is the fully blossomed end of the previous.... I may be wrong..
Anyways I rather have a solid device than an experimental one....

I'm aware. My comment was meant as an exaggeration. Most modern smartphones come with a minimum of 8GB of internal storage with the ability to expand via microSD. I was just a bit taken aback by the 4GB/1GB actual storage.

OP- The Atrix you have is NOT updated correct?
Awesome review BTW. I'm waiting for a review with an "updated" Atrix.

I was in the same boat as you, except I didn't have them side by side. Di yourself a favor and return the atrix, there are absolutely no pros of having it over the inspire.
You can do more on the inspire, it doesn't lag, sense rules, big screen rules, not locked down (although I'm still stock and staying that way), it doesn't lag, isn't made of plastic...
And for the haters that want to hate on inspire battery life, I get basically the same out of my inspire as I did my atrix. Right now I'm 1 d 12 hr with 20% left.

Yeah. I'm currently sitting at 24% after 27 hours of doing testing. Not too shabby, considering my Samsung Focus lasted 12 hours with little to no use...

Are you talking about the OTA? If so, then yes. I did the 1.5.7 update as soon as I unwrapped it. The entire review was based around that build.
Not sure what other "Updating" you can do to a locked out phone, outside of putting on Gingerblur, which is nothing but bloatware reduction (which breaks messaging and multiple email accounts), root, and theme. It's also causing a bunch of problems with the basic functionality of the phone from what I've read. Not sure how widespread it is, and I believe it's just the newest version causing the issues. Hell, you can't even put circle battery mod on the phone. Not sure why Motorola went to that extent, but jeez...

It's funny because i came between the same cross roads. I was following the atrix since it came out and was pretty much sold on it even while owning my iphone 4 i was going to trade some one hopefully my iphone for an atrix. I ended up dropping my iPhone and completely ruining it i ended up selling it for parts and needed a phone. So i went to the At&t store and the sales guy kept trying to get me to buy the inspire it but i was already fixed on the atrix so i bought that. After using the atrix for about 3 days i couldnt stand it there were so many bugs call quality sounded terrible i couldnt type on the keyboard at all my old iphone 4 made the picture quailty on the atrix look like a 1mp and on top of that i didnt understand how i had all that power and all my apps would randomly crash while i was using them..... so i decided i was going to take it back and get the htc inspire so far i like it alot better than the atrix even though its specs arnt up to par with the atrix i think its alot more solid an reliable than the atrix although people talk about the battery life will see how that works if its really that bad ill get a second battery but on the flip side my atrix had horrid battery life so thats not a make or break for me but will see how much i like it hopefully i wont end up with an iphone again ;-/

I am curious about the actual build quality of the phone. It seems owners are very happy with the overall quality, but both the engadget and androidcentral reviews called out poorly-fitting and-sometimes-creaky SD/SIM card covers, and engadget called out the screen not fitting properly/uniformly. I have also seen posts where the bottom right portion of the screen has 'give' to it, and pressing causes light leakage. Also, how are the viewing angles on the screen itself?
These issues may be from early production batches, I'm thinking about switching to this phone from the Captivate, and the only real issue with that phone is the GPS being flaky. The build quality is decent enough and the screen is pretty fantastic.

I've had the daunting task to pick between these two phones for the last couple days. I went into the store to actually get the devices in my hand and fully expected to walk out with the Atrix. I've always had a soft spot for HTC, ever since their WoMo phones. I saw the Inspire and was super impressed at how solid the phone felt in my hand. The phone felt very responsive, and I already knew the XDA Inspire team was cranking out some awesome stuff.
I then grabbed the Atrix and was not nearly as wow'd as I had expected to be. I've been following the phone since it's announcement, and pretty much had made up my mind on the spot to pick it up. After spending a half hour goofing around with both phones, I decided the Inspire really won my heart.
Then it happened... The cold sweats... The tossing and turning in bed at night. Images of the Atrix's Tegra 2 laying waste to the earth and doing vile things to my Inspire. My horrid indecision had struck. I decided that I had obviously made the wrong choice, so the next morning I headed off to the store and bought an Atrix without returning my perfectly set up Inspire. I wanted to play with them both side by side and just return whichever one didn't make me happy.
That was a bit over 24 hours ago. After spending the last day with both of the handsets, I am closer to a decision, but it's damn tough. My overall thoughts and struggles follow:
Motorola Atrix:
-Pros:
- Bright, higher resolution screen
- Dual Core processor (even though I thought the experience was pretty weak)
- Battery (theoretical, as I haven't had it long enough to fully experience)
- This goes to the hardware again, but this phone is quite a bit more future proof.
- The handset is light enough to not remind you it's in your pocket at every step.
- GPS (This is the most rock solid phone GPS I've ever used)
- Incredibly loud speaker
- Tons of ram
- HDMI out
-Cons:
- Cheaper build quality (I feel like I need to qualify this. The phone feels solid, but the battery door is, for lack of a better word, brittle)
- Call quality is absolutely garbage... For what I would count as the most important part of a PHONE, the Atrix falls WAY short.
- Very poor color representation on the otherwise beautiful screen.
- MotoBlur - This is just a very inelegant, unrefined overlay...
- Strange compatibility issues with certain apps
- multiple force closes
- Weak social media integration
- Odd bouts of lag when least expected
- Locked Bootloader (most don't care about this, but it matters when you have a primary developer that has a history of slow patches, feature adds, and os releases.
- Chicklet keyboard is a touch small for me and requires some focus to not miss type.
HTC Inspire:
-Pros:
- Excellent build quality (the aluminum uni-body is a joy to hold, and has the extra added benefit of being able to be used to fend off an attacker)
- Beautiful 4.3" screen (Yes, it is big, but I'm a fan)
- Sense (I'm not a fan of these proprietary UI's, but Sense shows that HTC can offer up an experience that is easy to like, and provide an attractive interface for a phone OS that is sometimes described as clinical looking)
- The brilliant development community (currently running CoreDroid /drool)
- Very snappy performance from the second gen Snapdragon CPU
- Tons of ram (Not as much as the Atrix, but enough to be a "ton" in my eyes)
- Lovely camera (I used to not care, but I have a new son, so suddenly a camera climbed up the ladder of important features)
- Fantastic out of the box social media integration
- Has that "Just works like it should" feel to it.
- Very clear call quality
- Second best phone gps I've used
-Cons:
- The screen washes out to a grey slab in direct sunlight
- Stock battery life is horrid
- "Electric Razor" ear screen can have some jagged edges and chafe your ear
- Battery door was a ridiculous design decision
- Very current gen hardware (doesn't mean a whole lot if you're not going to be riding this phone for the next two years, but a new day has dawned and it's name is "Multi-core")
- Stock external speaker/notification volume super weak
- odd placement of the number button on the keyboard (thanks iPhone for etching that into my brain)
- recessed power and volume buttons can be a bit tough to find.
- No internal storage (this is just ridiculous)
- Relatively weak GPU
There you have it. That's what I've come up with so far. At the moment, I'm leaning toward the Inspire, as so many of those issues can be (and have been) corrected through roms. In the end, I just don't really get the warm fuzzies from the Atrix. I feel like it's a brilliant set of components tied together with a really sorry software suite, and a manufacturer that doesn't really understand the strengths of their chosen platform, or the customers that choose it.
I will continue carrying both of the devices for the next couple days, but at the moment, the winner is most definitely the Inspire in my eyes. It just feels like it's been polished to a wonderful android flavored candy shine, and with the community behind it, there's really nothing I feel the device won't be able to handle for quite some time.

I had the same trouble as OP did. Ive had both phones. I started with the Inspire and took it back and exchanged it for the Atrix and then ended up trading a guy on craigslist the Atrix for his Inspire. So now im an Inspire owner again. As far as the Atrix goes I loved the 4" display, it seems to be a great compromise between 3.5 and 4.3 and the processor is lightning fast and the battery life is better than the Inspire stock. But I love flashing Roms and I love Cyanogen Mod. I've tried a lot of different Roms on all my android devices Nexus One, My touch, Nexus One Att,Vibrant,EVO,Captivate,Hero,Backflip,Atrix. and i always end up getting rid of the ones i cant put CM (or at the very least AOSP) on em. So i guess it all comes down to personal preference but i'd rather have an Anroid phone i can modify than to have a phone thats locked down. If i was gonna go back to being locked down then id go back to the iphone 4. But personally i think ill always wind up owning a nexus phone. Being with ATT though it sucks because Google always takes forever to release their Nexus phones with ATT 3g bands. But i'll be buying an ATT Nexus S as soon as its released..

First ten days with HTC One S

I received my phone from Orange Spain. The phone itself is very nice, quick and smooth and everything you have read about it in general review is correct. It is a very good phone and I am happy with it. BUT here are the things I don't like:
1. Micro oxydation is very nice looking although it smells a little like dirty hair. And, unfortunately, like it has been reported I have a small edge chipped. I don't know yet if I will return it for that.
2. The default browser is new and some HTML5 games are incompatible with it or play very slow. Android is still behind Apple iOS Safari Browser and this is very bad since I work for a mobile game network. I suspect this is not a problem of the phone but the ICS browser.
3. I have installed the Chrome browser and it crashes almost everytime I use it. Not only Chrome crashes but the whole phone. The phone freezes and the only way to reboot it is to maintain the power button pressed for a while.
4. Camera is fantastic. I tested a few times and worked very well. But the first time I really used it I could take the first picture then the screen became black. I mean, everything I should see through the camera stayed black. The buttons and menu were visible but I couldn't use them. I shut down the app and reload it with same problem. I had to reboot the phone to fix it.
I have one app (Live TV from Lyric) with a shortcut on the homescreen. Everytime I reboot, the icon disappear from the homescreen and is replaced with the Android robot icon. I have to replace the icon every time I boot. The app doesn't disappear, only the shortcut.
5. Maybe this is the most important problem. Reception is not very good and many times I loose the GSM signal totally, then it comes back. My HTC Desire had better recepción. 3G and HSDP is veery slow when reception is weak (2 bars or under)
The doubts I had:
- When I read reviews about this phone I had my doubts about the screen resolution and pentile technology. This is bull****. The screen is great and more than enough for a high end phone.
- Battery and autonomy. I don't care about having a non removable battery. All my previous ones had removable battery and I never used a spare. The autonomy of this phone is good and much better than my Desire. I can keep it running with a lot of use during a full day and probably two days on light use.
- Non removable memory. It is advertised to have 16GB user memory but the reality is way different: I have "only" 10GB available and I feel ripped off. Although I know I will probably never use so much memory (I don't store music or movies).
Conclusion: I would probably buy this phone again even after knowing the limitations. But I hope some software fixes will come.

I haven't bought one yet but i'm the same as you having doubts about the S's screen. I have viewed the S and X side by side in a shop and obviously the X's panel is much better to look at, but in my opinion it's the only thing the X has going for it over the S.

that shouldn't be a concern. because at any given time there will be coming better and better phones
- so don't worry that this one will get outdated, because it's not. Just look at the Desire HD or the Galaxy S2 (which people still buying btw)
I'm superhappy with this phone, although I can't wait for the xda development to start working on replacements to Sense 4.0

Not many people will continuously look at a One X and a One S screen.
AMOLED displays have been impressive on my friend's Windows 7 device, and since I'm coming from a device from less than 200 PPI, it should be a great screen.

Been disappointed with my first few days with it. It seems to suffer from constant crashes where the phone reboots itself.
I've tried stock and some custom roms but am still getting random reboots.

Were you getting Crashes and Random reboots before you Rooted and started flashing other ROMS? or do you think it might be because you are flashing different ROMS that might have some minor bugs here and there?

I don't know about the original poster but this happens with my One S with the stock ROM. It seems to maybe happen when I'm at a wifi connection boundary (maybe?) but a couple times a week, I'll either:
1) notice the phone rebooting as it's just sitting idle on my desk
2) hear the "I just crashed and am rebooting" sound from the phone in my pocket
3) go to use it and notice the notification bar icon telling me it just recovered from a crash.
I'm sending the crash data to HTC every time, hoping they're prioritizing the fix because though it has never crashed on me like this while I'm using it (which is weird...), it's starting to get annoying.

I have not had a single random reboot, using WIP CM9.

I really regret smelling it now lol.
Agree about the display, reviews were making a big deal put of the pentile display but it's a non issue for me. Only issue I've had, coming off an iPhone 4, has been the size of the phone. Maybe I just have small hands but not finding it too comfortable to use with one hand.

My girlfriend had the One X and i have the One S. I can definitely notice the difference with the pentile matrix on my phone especially with small writing and horizontal lines. (the edge of the messaging icon for example looks like a dotted line) but honestly it's only noticeable if im using the phone in bed and using it really close to my face. The One X is crisper looking but it's a little washed out compared to the One S's screen. The blacks on my screen are way darker compared to the X.
I've had my One S for just over a week now and have yet to see any rebooting or crashing. The phone has been fantastic so far except that i get absolutely terrible reception. I had a Desire before this phone and in places where i used to get full bars i can now maybe get one, if it's not in emergency mode. The signal bounces around from really good to really bad (mostly hovering around -107dbm) which is not good at all. I took the phone back and got it replaced as well as the sim card and i still have issues.
Overall i really like it, but i think i might have to take it back and get something else that can keep good reception.

Ive got my phone for about 4 days now, and its the best investment ive made in the past few years
I allready worked on a few Android devices ( Root etc etc ) but newer owned one myself, so the first thing I did was Unlocking, Rooting and flashing LeeDroid´s Firmware onto it.
And the phone is fantastic.
Far beyond what I expected.
The Battery life is great, my friends are allready pissed because their iPhone cant take so long OnScreen-Times
I really hope that there will be [S-OFF] and the Kernel Source available soon

I'm with the phone for 6 weeks now (bought it in Switzerland unbranded) and agree with you so much.
I'm thinking of sending it to Greece for "repair" although I'm not sure they can make the network reception and data connection loss disappear unless a new firmware is out, which I can update myself, if there will be (I'm on 1.78 currently).
Unfortunately, unlike you, I cannot anymore return it for a refund
I had Desire which was magnificent and am so depressed with this phone in terms of its reception! Other than that, it's magnificent as well!!!

It is a common or just a few devices have this problem?

This phone got no problems.

Got my One S a week ago. The black one. Was using a Desire before that. Here are my findings:
* Size: It is a bit unwieldy. The fact that the entire front side responds to touch doesn't make it easier to hold. I probably have to grow into it.
It feels like the chances of dropping it are higher and the results of dropping it are worse.
* Power button: A bit hard to reach and hard to press. On the Desire we have 'trackpad to wake'. I miss that.
* Reception: I don't know about actual signal, but the bars in the notification area jump back and forth pretty much between 1 and 4.
* Battery: About a full day. Of course since the device is new, I play with it more than normal. Really too soon to tell. I remember on the Desire the battery life was a bit disappointing in the beginning, but became better with time. (Better calibration? Better kernels & ROMs?)
* Body: The weight, the thinness, the shape, damn this is a marvelous piece of engineering! The MAO aluminium feels fantastic.
I don't use a case and I don't plan to. No point (for me) to hide its beauty in order to retain it. Maybe a screen protector, not sure yet. No chipping or scratching (yet?). Dropped it once, from about 1 meter, on wooden floor (not on concrete). [SH24TW]
* General performace: It just screams.
* Screen: Bigger, brighter, more pixels, yummm! (I realize that this is a counterpoint to "It is a bit unwieldy".) I am personally not bothered by pentile matrix layout
* WiFi is better: Stronger signal, faster joining, better speed, less latency.
* GPS: Was already pretty good on the Desire, but on the One S it is even better. Stronger signal, better accuracy, GLONASS.
* Camera. I'm just blown away with the awesomness of the camera.
I am very impressed so far.

My experience so far (have had it for 10 days now):
-Phone looks amazing - miles ahead of pretty much everything else out there. Makes my Sensation feel like a brick. That said, I agree with some that the gray finish is quite slippery and it can be hard to get a good grip. Build quality is fine, no creaks or anything.
-The non-removable battery and lack of SD slot are non-issues. Battery life is good so far and I've never used more than 5GB on my previous phones so 16GB should be more than enough.
-Screen looks great. PenTile is not a problem for me.
-Sense 4 is very nice both aesthetically and functionally, better than 3.6 and certainly at least as good as stock ICS (I have tried all three for extended periods on my Sensation as well, so they were all on an even footing).
-Very happy with the performance. No random reboots, crashes, or major bugs so far. Only issues I have are 1) Wi-Fi randomly disconnecting and then immediately re-connecting and 2) in areas with weak "4G" reception the signal will spike between no bars and full bars occasionally. Hopefully the OTA will fix these.
-Camera is excellent. Haven't had much chance to play with it but it's really, really fast and the quality is very good.
Overall, very satisfied.

Reception has been superb. Not a single crash or reboot. Rooted straight away and have used several ROMs before settling with one I like. Not wanting to repeat what others have said, but i'm very happy with this phone.
My wife on the other hand, has done nothing but moan about reception issues. Although I think that says more about her, than it does the One S.

I've tried extensively to convert my iPhone using wife to an Android device. I bought her a Galaxy Nexus, she said it wasn't comfortable in one hand. I got her the SGS2, she had the same complaint. Purchased the Amaze, she said the screen was too washed out (?) and Sense 3.0 wasn't her "cup of tea". I gave her a G2X for the hell of it, which she liked, but ultimately, wanted her iPhone 4 back. So, after hell and high water trying to find her the "perfect" Android device, she's back to her iPhone 4. I told her that I didn't want her to feel pressured just because I'm an Android user, and she said that the main reason she wanted her iPhone back was to facetime with her family in Canada, which I can't argue with.
So about a month later, I purchased the One S. She instantly was in shock by the gorgeous hardware design. She asked if she could use it for a few days to see if she can make the switch. So, after using it for a week (she wouldn't give it back to me), she said that she couldn't believe how vibrant the screen was (the regular consumer who has no idea what pentile is will not notice this "flaw", and that's speaking strictly from the end user who see's the screen for what it is, 4.3 inches of pure beauty), how quick and easy Sense 4 was to use, and how well it fit in her pocket. So by that point, I wanted my phone back, (I switched between an Amaze and SGS2 temporarily), and ultimately, ended up purchasing one for her. Without my knowledge, she went and got a complete guard on the entirety of the phone, as well as a white skull candy case. She's kept it in perfect condition (learns from the best =) and has officially (at least for now) retired her iPhone.
Since most of her friends are iUsers, she can boast about being the only one with common sense to use what she believes is a superior device (which it is, in our opinion). I've dealt with her whiny friends who have asked me, "why did you let her buy a droid?!" My answer is, it isn't a droid, a droid is a phone made by Motorola, first off, and second, because it's just better for her personal use, and in many ways, then the iPhone itself. They then proceed to balk on about how the iPhone just "works" etc. etc., but after they got a glimpse of the One S, she was actually able to convert a longtime iPhone user into purchasing a white Galaxy S2 for Sprint! Two down, a worlds to go, but no less, it's encouraging.
The real test begins when the "New iPhone" is released, we'll see then how she reacts. But for now, I feel as though this phone has really done well for HTC and transcended a lot of the "complications" iUsers have when trying to convert to Android. The One S has such good touch sensitivity, that it compares to that of the iPhone, where as I've noticed using the Galaxy Nexus and SGS2 that the sensitivity of touch wasn't as prevalent as these HTC devices. It's likely just perception, but it's something I've noticed.

With custom ROM One X better than S III?

I am about to buy a new phone in the next month or so. I have been following the new phone release and seems like HTC One X and S III are the ones I am considering. I have had galaxy S for 2 years and it is time to upgrade.
I really like the solid design of the One X, it looks better, feels sturdier, screen is better... And my question is, if I am going to put custom ROMs on my phone, why should I choose One X over the S III (international versions)? My only strong point for the S III is the bigger battery and better contrast. But some say it is faster..
I do not care about removable battery and extra storage.

Within two months, you will get bored of the touchwiz ui. But one x has sense and if you like it, with a little modifications, and with custom roms, you will never get bored of your phone

I'm kind of in the same boat. I haven't held the S3 yet so I don't know how it looks/feels in the hand. The OneX feels solid and comfortable to me. I think the OneX with a Sense-less ICS ROM would be super fast and more enjoyable. I'm leaning that way with my decision.

Go for the S3. Bigger development, cm9 from people who actually build from source themselves and i would trust my life in their hands so to speak. Codeworkx and Xplowild could not get any better and really wished they supported the One X but that is not going to happen, more AOSP and AOKP roms for the S3 and you probably get the best kernel developer i know and that Gokhanmoral as well...And the list goes on. One x might be better looking but you have so much more going for the S3 which is supercurio for one releasing his app for it specially with the better sound chip for it and well i can go on..
One X is a great phone with great potential..but with all the replacements i had and with their poor service and Quality Control have left a bad taste in my mouth and will never go for HTC again...Do not get me wrong development for this phone is only just getting started..But if you are a samsung boy and loved the development on the s2 then s3 is the place to be for you..just wished i waited a bit longer
But seriously my best advice to you..Wait a few more weeks. Watch videos and watch comparisons...And then make a judgement on yourself on what you need the phone for. Sense is ten times better than TW no doubt. But like i said take your time and do your research..And if you do go for the One X make sure you get a phone which is build like a gold phone..Make sure it is perfect and solid..Then you will not regret it

Real world speed is the same. Both have minor flaws and particular strengths. For me, the s3 is less aestheticaly pleasing (read:yuk) and the screen has a pink hue on greys, I can't stand touch wiz and I dislike the unrealistic colours on amoled screens.

I agree I had a go on the one x saw sense and the shell and was like I want it! Glad I did as I dislike the look of the s3 not that it is ugly or anything hox just appeals to me more.

I say its better even with Stock Rom

The truth is i am bored with my samsung galaxy S... so if i get the S III will be the same feeling. I always though HTC phones look sexier and simply better.. but looking at some reviews a couple of things scare me. For example, when browsing the way it redraws while zooming; multitasking when switching programs also redraws.. the small battery also does not give me great confidence..

The HOX looks far better, the bluey coloured SIII looks very cheap, and to me the proportions look wrong on the front - weird angle curves, and too much bezel at top and bottom.
AMOLED provides less than realistic colours, if its anything like the SII and youre used to a properly calibrated TV/PC Monitor you'll laugh.
Having had a pentile display phone before the One X (Droid 3) no matter what the PPI youre going to notice the Pentile matrix on font and icon edges if you have the screen relatively close to your face, like when you're reading it in bed or something. Minor niggle but it annoyed me. Reading on the One X is like reading a magazine, it looks printed on.
The only positive for me is the bigger battery, but in real world usage i.e. Web Browsing itll only offer you about 40 mins more according to GSM Arena due to the high draw of the AMOLED display on white. Video life is about 4 hours longer, though. Saying that, if you have time to watch a video you'd be in a situation where you could use HTC's small battery bank to see you through it on the one x and have battery left to play with on a flight or long outing (should have a car charger so incar use wouldn't be an issue).
Regarding the above, GSMArena's battery life tests are very unscientific. The One X's display is among the brightest, and far brighter than the SII (double brightness nearly) so if the SIII is the same, the battery life at similar brightness to the One X's default levels would be negligable in texting/browsing/everyday use, again, bar video playback.
There is also the element of standing from the crowd a little - the One X is in my opinion (and many reviewers) the best looking phone to date - It matters to me to enjoy looking at something I use so often, so it helps.
Custom ROMS will come as well, its a major device with global variants so CM9 support will come I'd assume.
As far as build goes, I have sent one back but only because I'm very picky and the screen gap on the left was a tiny bit too much for my liking but I'm pretty sure 75% of the people on the replacement threads have got OCD with the number of replacements theyre having, or they use their phones punishingly. I didnt have flicker after the latest OTA either. The flex is the major issue regarding build, but my Dad's iPhone has the same thing if you press on the edges of the screens, every phone has it.

Im a fairly heavy user and the battery is great for me.
Streaming radio/and mp3 is all done with the companion core for example and with screen off the battery graph is basically flat even whilst streaming over HSPA for a good while.
I can get 4/4hr30 web browsing and if you think about it, you don't need any more than that - with any phone nowadays youre looking at an overnight charge really so it makes no odds whether that number is a bit less or a bit more.
The browser redraw is instantaneous, and looks good - the text fades and fades back as an effect rather than jerking all the text round like opera - you dont notice the time it takes.
Multitasking Fix This may be of great use - it was to me on my Droid 3 and I noticed weird settings posted on here in HTC's default Build.prop that explain IMO the memory Issues people are perceiving.
Multitasking can easily be fixed in build prop. Some of the default HTC settings baffle me. Or use RomToolbox by JRummy
Ive not rooted yet but on my D3 (512mb ram) I used dirty ratio 70% (HOX default is 0%....!) Dirty background 90% (Hox default is 30%) and vfs cache pressure 10. Hox default is 100. This makes android flush the cache less often, saving battery and eliminating stutter, keeps apps in background ram leaving you where you left off and doesn't negatively impact on battery life or degrade performance over time. I've no idea why the HOX's default settings are so aggressive - unless they thought users might get an errant app, leave it running and complain when they dont know why the battery is draining... kill OOM allocating task was also a yes.
On my Droid 3 with the above settings, I could infinitely multitask (VM Heap of 48mb - but on HOX you could easily double that for more tabs in browser etc) and my battery gained a perceived time of about an hour at least - maybe more, due to the apps always remaining open and CPU time not having to be used reopening them and redrawing the past state they were in because theyve been pushed out of RAM.
I researched the above for ages when I had my D3 (even with 512 ram Moto's settings were way less aggressive than HTC's are at default) and made sure they wouldn't cause lag over time, or loss of performance over time - as well as providing optimal battery life.
Finally!
If you're planning on keeping the phone for some time (I can't see much that can improve on this, heck I wouldnt have got rid of my D3 had i not bricked it!) HTC are very good with software updates, the best around on unbranded devices really. They've just listed devices to recieve ICS - and those included some devices that were 18 Months old with a single core processor. This would suggest to me the One X will not only get Jelly Bean, but probably the next iteration (Released end of summer/fall 2013 most likely), should the hardware requirements not change massively (although 1gb RAM and Quad Core looks pretty safe for 18 months IMO).

I myself am coming from a galaxy s. Not sure how much the amoled screen is worse than the s2 on the s1 in comparison. I do know,however, that this super LCD2 screen on my htc one x is a thing that's going to be difficult to leave should I ever have to decide between this phone or a super amoled phone in the future.
Browsing-wise: I think we are all going to end up using google chrome in the long run. With the updates it gets, i believe it's sooner or later going to be the browser everyone's going to replace their original browser with.
I personally use google chrome browser on my phone myself. It's much faster than other IMO. Especially loading time is amazing and super smooth.
Battery is debatable. Personally, I wish i could squeeze an hour more hour out of my phone. On a full use I easily hit the 3 hours mark screen on time(3h 10m~). Probably just like most One X owners. Depending on your phone usage though, it's safe to say that the battery life on the HTC One X on standy by is godlike Seen people go for 4 days.
The highest i have reached was 3 hours 31 minutes. I think i could have even exceeded that by now but i just don't bother anymore and plug the phone in before it depletes.
It gets me through a day with ease plus i don't know what htc is up to. As far as I know this phone still needs optimization(take what i say with a grain of salt on this part). As I have no idea if the battery is going to improve in future or not. Just my gut feeling tells me it is, but a gut feeling is just that, a gut feeling. I wish HTC would at least communicate with us users more. Really kind of disappointing on their part.
Oh well, this is the insight i'm capable of giving.
p.s: i'm not one of those users who had to send his phone in for multiple replacements. So yeah, i can understand the users who do suggest the S3 for alone that reason. Because we all just want a phone that functions and don't want to constantly have it replaced just to replace it again.

Any possible enhancements from ROMs or Kernels for the HOX will also come out for the S3 so you're best looking at them stock vs stock and decide that way IMO.

Yeah! This is actually true as well. Considering the fact that SG3 has got more support. Or at least that's what I always read and i don't doubt it. Probably a customized rom for the gs3 will be running better than the one x's.

Other negatives for the HOX include quality control with the screen flex and squeeky noises at least thats what I get!
With s-on am currently locked down so am having to wait for the network provider to bring about all the fixes in the updates unless I use custom roms but then I can't change the radio etc due to s-on..... Would be great if the phone was cracked in that sense.
Also the soundchip is not that great, could be better.
Battery is bad for me due to being on older firmware so screen on time is about 2hrs and the battery is dead.....
Currently sent mine back to htc due to hardware issues.....

I would wait to see the SIII however i cant't see samsung moving away from using inferior plastic for the shell. This spoils everything.
Also, the cool software will be ported shortly therefore I can't see a reason for choosing the SIII over the HOX. It's all about feeling in the hand........

Its a matter of choice. Both HTC and samsung stock UIs are horrible in my eyes. The main differentiating factor is the more powerful CPU in the galaxy s3, expandable memory and removable/better battery. Its downsides are the pentile display and cheap look.
Both will come with many custom ROMS so flashing a custom rom holds no advantage for the one X

If your getting the HTC ONE X over the Galaxy S3 get ready for some poor battery life

Don't know what you guys expect with battery life on the one x to be honest, I love my HOX , I can run it with several phone calls and texts, bit of browsing on here, read books daily and usually get a couple days out of the battery, yes, if you hammer it with games like riptide, then be prepared for it to eat battery, but I imagine that will be no different on any quad core phone

Battery life - User dependant. Also other factors can impact this such as signal strength, type of data used, screen brightness. Looking at the battery stats thread it seems fine, better than my HOX and that's saying something.
10GB of user space available. 4GB for system & 2GB for apps. Plenty for apps. You have 10gb available to you for music, movies, photos etc. For some this is enough for others not so much. But with the ability to sync items to cloud storage for most it shouldn't be an issue.
Heat - Can't comment, but from various reading it seems cooler than other devices.
Not got the device but comparing to let's say the SGS2 this seems to have a higher resolution screen despite having a pentile screen.
Audio - Read it has one of the cleanest outputs on a mobile device, not heard it personally but it should be fine.
CPU - The S4 is one of the best dual cores around, so much there is a shortage and pretty soon they will switch to the S3. So grab the S4 version whilst you still can. It's plenty fast and outbenches some of the quads out there.
Sense - HTC's overlay, you'll love it or hate it. I love it. Has good contact management, lovely widgets, good for social networking, and such but can be a memory hog.
Camera - HTC has done a good job on the camera front. Like my HOX I like the pictures that it takes and the burst mode is a blessing. The software is also good and easy to use.
LED - This has a notification light, albeit 2 colours only compared to some other devices but at least it has one.
To sum it up it's a good mid range device. And should serve you well. Not having the device myself I'm only giving you my thoughts from reading reviews and taking some parts of my HOX.

I'd say think about longer term, it's an older device. The One S is the newer device and I'd be thinking about Jelly Bean the next android version. One S being newer would more likely be quicker to get it than the XE. It'll have more support from HTC.
Looking at the specs of both phones:
HOS is faster,
HOS reportedly has better battery life,
HOS has better screen in regards to viewing angles and sunlight compared to the first generation SLCD, again this could be subjective,
HOS is thinner and ligther,
HOS has the better camera,
HOS has native Sense 4 support,
HOS has 1gb of RAM compared to XEs 768MB,
You'll enjoy either but if you can I'd opt for the HOS if storage space isn't that important to you.

I have both the Sensation and One S and there is really no comparison, the One S is much better. I still like my Sensation but the One S is better looking and feeling, has better battery life and a nicer screen, and is much faster.
I haven't had any of the problems that people have reported here (sensitive button, poor reception etc.). Battery life has been good for me so far, and while it does warm up when you're using it heavily it's not "hot" by any means.
The lack of SD slot is not really a problem for me, but whether you can live with it depends on your usage. I've never used more than 4GB of SD card on my Sensation, so the 10GB on board is more than enough.
The only problems I would be concerned about are:
1) Chipping on the black version. I honestly think it's overblown (like most issues with all phones, only people who have problems speak up), but if you are really worried about it get the silver one. It looks even better IMO and it won't chip as the finishing process is different.
2) Getting the 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 version instead of the 1.5GHz S4. The S3 is the previous generation chip, used in the Sensation, and is slower (despite the higher clock speed, the architecture is different) and uses more power. I don't know if there's a way to tell what you're going to get beforehand, though. Only thing I can think of is if you see "1.7GHz" anywhere on or near it, stay away.

Speaker for the HOX is fine, not as loud as say the SGS3 but it's consistent where as the SGS3 can be distorted on higher volumes. I prefer the ringtone sounds out of the HOX than SGS3.

Very good! Call quality is great for me.
Loud (can adjust the volume) and clean.
You have dual mics, so any background noise is blocked out Obviously extreme noise like cars racing right beside you and loud music might not be completely blocked out and besides you won't be able to make the other person out anyway

That's nice, and now I really want it XDDDDD

I've just upgraded to this phone from the Desire S. I was thinking about getting the One X or the S3 too but I want a high end mobile phone not a mini tablet. This phone is amazing coming from a rooted desire S, its so fast and smooth I don't plan on rooting it.
My advise is to simply get this phone.

Are you asking me or someone else?

1) The battery life on this phone sucks. Expect to be getting no more than 4 hours of usage on average. The iphone 4/4s gets a solid 6 hours of usage. Thats 150% more battery life and I don't need to fiddle with the settings at all to achieve this.
2) The hardware has major design flaws. First of all the black one has that chipping problem with the paint. Well I have used my phone for less than 2 months and it looks butchered as hell. People complain about the iphone 4/4s, well I dropped a gazillion times and it still looked almost brand new when I sold it. I dropped the 1S one time! and the paint already came off. The front camera is recessed and gathers dust like crazy. It's impossible to clean it because its recessed and the dust has no where to go. Crap and dust also builds up near the top plastic cap. The speakers are also located exactly on the back of the phone. So if you put your phone on your table, you can't hear it ringing. Not only that the volume is so low. I missed tons of calls.
3) The community for this phone sucks. There is barely any activity on the fora and development for custom roms is stagnating. I mean sense is crap and there is only like 1 guy working on cm9? And correct me if I am wrong but the last version of AOKP is like from 3 weeks ago with tons of bugs. Now look at the Galaxy Nexus or the 1X fora. Or look at the SGS3 fora and that phone has not even been completely released yet. Its crazy. And this is worrying cause even sense has tons of bugs. There is for example this 3g/H switching that still hasn't been fixed as far as I know.
4) Then there is this low resolution pentile screen. Well its definitely ok and you shouldn't worry about it. But you WILL notice a huge difference if you put it next to the nexus, 1X or the iphone 4/4s and you will run in to all kinds of trouble with apps. For example while my own 720p videos looks good on this phone, youtube videos will look crap no matter how high you put the settings. There are tons of these annoying things. The screen is the reason why its not quite yet a flagship device while it could have been.
That being said I think its the best android phone on the market. Its the fastest android phone on the market. It doesn't have a cheap flimsy plastic body and it has a thin and light design. Aluminum feels really good on the hand especially when its cold. Its like 100 dollars/euro cheaper than the 1X and SGS3. I'd wait for the iphone 5 though. And if that turns out to be nothing or if the wait is too long then go ahead and purchase the 1S cause thats what I recommend out of the top3 android phones.

And correct me if I am wrong but the last version of AOKP is like from 3 weeks ago with tons of bugs. Now look at the Galaxy Nexus or the 1X fora. Or look at the SGS3 fora and that phone has not even been completely released yet. Its crazy. And this is worrying cause even sense has tons of bugs. There is for example this 3g/H switching that still hasn't been fixed as far as I know.
4) Then there is this low resolution pentile screen. Well its definitely ok and you shouldn't worry about it. But you WILL notice a huge difference if you put it next to the nexus, 1X or the iphone 4/4s and you will run in to all kinds of trouble with apps. For example while my own 720p videos looks good on this phone, youtube videos will look crap no matter how high you put the settings. There are tons of these annoying things. The screen is the reason why its not quite yet a flagship device while it could have been.
That being said I think its the best android phone on the market. Its the fastest android phone on the market. It doesn't have a cheap flimsy plastic body and it has a thin and light design. Once again, all of that is in YOUR opinion and from your usage only as well, plenty of people including me have had the exact opposite to you. Just because you experience problems doesn't mean that every one else will....
1. Is that on screen time your talking about? If so that is very good! (depending on usage and screen brightness) No other android phone gets anywhere near that unless the screens are set to like 0% and airplane mode enabled for a bit. Just look at my review and you will see the usage that I am getting from a single charge, now go and find me an android phone on stock ROM with a stock battery that can beat that (apart from the motorola razzr for obvious reasons). The iphone 4/4s also seem to have a problem with battery life for quite a few people, heck apple have even released a number of updates iirc to try and fix the battery drain
Plus don't forget that the iphone 4/4s doesn't have the same amount to do as an android phone.
2. The MAO issue is not a "hardware" problem, but a design fault.... Also I have had my phone since release day and still have no signs of chipping anywhere apart from inside the USB port plus HTC have addressed this now as they have got a design, which has a bevelled USB and less sharper edges. Well you were extremely lucky with your 4s then as due to the build of it and being mostly glass, the screen is almost always guaranteed to shatter when dropped......

It all depends on where abouts the ground impacts the mobile, you could be lucky or not so lucky with any device. If you want to be safe than sorry then a case is a necessary item for all mobiles, even the GS 2. Some devices are just more durable than others.
I have had no problems with dust getting under my screen, had my mobile since April, yes dust does gather in the front camera part, however, a quick blow and wipe with a pencil in a cloth sorts that problem out.
Emmmm what? The volume is amplified a wee bit when it is placed on the desk due to that reason, you can raise the volume as well you know or use a louder ring tone, you must be pretty deaf if you can't hear your mobile ringing......
3. The community isn't great, but it is starting to pick up now especially since the kernel source was posted, there are a few good ROMs from what I have read such as trickdroid and leedroid. Sense is crap in your opinion, many people including me love it and I for one won't be changing to a stock ICS ROM as I don't want to loose the features of sense, which IMO are better than the alternatives. The gallery, dialer, calendar, clock app are superb and not to mention the sense camera along with all the features, which you won't find on any other mobile or stock ICS ROM. Of course the galaxy nexus is going to have a damn good developing community, it's only the official/stock android phone that all the developers use to develop apps for and was the first phone to have a 720P display. The developing community here will never be as good as the the 1X or GS 3 community as they are the "flagship" devices and the phones that everyone will go for just for because of that "term"
Also the tegra chipset is apparently proving to be hard to work with for the developers with the 1X due to nvidia lack of support.
What are these bugs you speak off? I haven't had any problems with mine, super stable, super quick and smooth, multi-tasking is fine as I have disabled a lot of sense stuff and apps that I don't need and am using apex etc. instead.
If you look at my other post addressing issues you will see that I don't have the 3G/H bug, along with many other people.
The iphone is well known to have signal issues as well, not remember the 4 or 4s release where people were complaining about terrible signal, and apple said essentially "you're holding the phone the wrong way" and had to give out free bumper cases to solve the issue as it was a problem with the new antenna that they were using......
4. There is no problem with the screen, sure it ain't 720P and doesn't use RGB matrix, but it is perfectly good and better than most other mobiles screens apart from the ones you mentioned along with a couple of SE mobiles. The screen is nice and sharp still, the only areas I notice the pentile matrix is with white text on black backgrounds and some icons and even still I have to put my eyes right up to the screen. Plus the reason HTC went with with the pentile version is because the battery life is better with it than the RGB version (same reason Samsung went with pentile on the GS 3 instead of RGB). What kind of trouble have you run into with all these apps that you speak of because of the screen? What on earth are you talking about again??? Youtube videos will look crap no matter what settings you put them on??? The youtube videos look great.
Seriously, it sounds to me like you have a faulty one s if that is truly what you are experiencing.......
And after all that you still think the 1S is the best android device there is

Just buy it. It's a fine phone. These have been snapped up by many in the UK past few days due to a cheap contract deal so many more HOS users in the pipeline.
