Couple questions about the device... - Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus

I just got the Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus 7.0. Great product. I just have a few (possibly silly) questions....
What is the purpose of the earpiece? The thin speaker like thing at the top front of the device. This is not a cellular phone, and when I play any sounds such as music etc the sound comes from the bottom speakers like it should...
What is the best keyboard for this device... I am using perfect keyboard free and typing is messy in portrait or background. Typing on a letter mostly hits letters around it by accident.
Lastly... I have a micro SD currently on FAT32. I want to use big MKVs on this tablet but they are 5-6 gigs in size. If I format the card to NTFS will it operate ok in the tablet? Are there any known issues if I format this way?

Well I can confidently answer that 2nd one. I use Thumb Keyboard and it's great. It has multiple keyboard layouts and types really well. Maybe you should give that one a try.

i'm using Thumb Keyboard. IMO, its the best keyboard for the p6200 when used in portrait and landscape.

My tablet not being a phone though.... kinda makes me wonder what the earpiece is for... it shows it as the earpiece in the manual.
Unless this thing can make calls? If so there is definitely no app for it as it is a tablet.

which version do you have? wifi only? or Tmobile? the international version GT-P6200 does in fact make and receive calls like a normal cell phone. (try not to get jelly...)

That is the same tablet, just the WiFi-only model. And it is an earpiece. You can even listen to the Google Voice voicemails through it.

No Active Noise Cancellation?

When I got my set and open up to inspect, i realised that one of the holes on the back of Sensation doesn't have purpose at all (the hole on the right of the back speaker). This is quite saddening cuz I bought this with the expectiation that it has....
I suspect that the dual mic might be actually removed in the final release. But I read at many places that the video recording uses the secondary mic to achieve stereo audio recording. So does sensation have the secondary mic in the first place? And secondly, does the video recording have stereo sound?
What do you all think? Many reviews mentioned that noise cancellation during calls r available thou....
I managed to email HTC support and this is wad they responded,
Thank you for contacting HTC.

whats with HTC and cheap speakers they use ? How hard is it to use something decent in their "state of the art" phone...

well, there is stereo sound recording, so it could be using one of the microphones there.. although i'm not sure if the spacing of those mics is conducive to noise cancellation..
There are six holes on the backside of the case. Four of them appear to be used as aerials for the various radios. The hole next to the speaker seems to be unused.
I'm not sure, but the microphone appears to be on the bottom edge, adjacent the back release. Where is the second microphone, or are thye combined in one module?
If they are combined I doubt they would work for noise cancelling...

That's the other microphone. Pretty easy to see if you pull the phone out of the shell. Every other hole doesn't seem to go anywhere, the one above the camera has a little gasket on the device-side.

Ok.. So I believe that secondary mic is present... For the stereo recording at least..
But during calls, it really doesn't sound like active noise cancellation.. I've used Nexus one & S2, their noise cancellation works very well even on a busy street...
I mean I still love this phone but just a bit disappointed with some hardware aspects..

i'm designing a new device

Hi,
I'm currently designing a completely new android device and would like some feedback on the hardware designs. (It is a phone with a 4.2" screen.)
I will build a working prototype from an old Zte blade and 3d printed bits at some point.
Update: the hardware i'm thinking of for a product final isn't like the blade's, it would be higher end.
Update 2: The apk thing was kind of a separate note, this phone would initially be AOSP i was just thinking of something separate I'm working on.
Please don't steal my idea, and credit this source if you build upon it.
Any way
please let me know what you think:

How about stereo speakers? You should design it like this; one on the bottom left (speaker A) & one on top right (speaker B). In portrait, speaker A is the left channel, speaker B the right channel. This is ideal for listening to music. But when the user switch to landscape for example to watch movies, speaker B becomes the left channel, speaker A becomes the right channel. I know it's quite hard to imagine but it totally makes sense. Also, it distinguishes your device from others in the market.

Not always, but I do.
About the speakers:
good idea but i don't know if it's plausible to have two sets at the top, what if the mic was two way? then it has two larger speakers on the front for stereo playback?
attached below:
Both speakers should be on the back, not in front. That would be ridiculous LOL. Also, how about a kickstand so you don't always have do hold it when watching movies.
You always have to have a speaker on the front, it's a phone. there wont be room to have it at the back at the top as well as the two cameras, proximity, ambient light sensor, and front calling speaker.
about the kickstand; I've already been thinking about that, but where would it go? I'm building up some models for one with a kick stand now.
I think you a referring to the speaker for phone call. I'm talking about speakers that you listen to when you play music. Almost all phones have it on the back, but only 1. My idea is to put 2 of them.
Edit: An example of phone with stereo speaker http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_w595-pictures-2469.php
right new picture; this one incorporates the idea of a kickstand with two speakers, although they are on the sides they wrap around to the back.
My comment on the front speakers was an idea that you could use the calling speaker as a music/ other audio speaker, as well, for movie playback.
Great! Are you really building this phone for the market or just designing for fun?

If you fancy some crit, (BTW I'm a 3D artist of 16 years in games/film as a TD so I often only see the bad points of design or function)
1. "Edge to Edge" screen. Although I've often thought about a phone with this, from a design standpoint it becomes a little impractical for a number of reasons.
a) The users hands activate the areas on the edge just by holding it.
b) The problem of a) becomes much greater when holding the phone and operating it with one hand (it near enough means you can't, because of your palm or lower finger/thumb)
c) Any case or protection that one would want for the phone has a problem of not being able to wrap at the sides to create better grip to the unit.
2. Curved screen. Most curved screens work from a convergence angle based of the "average" eye distance in use. I think the curves are just too much for a device of this size. I personally only see a need and or advantage for screens of 15" + to be curved.
3. The volume/power button arrangement seems inconsistant with the actual design flow of the phone. Me personally would have them following the profile of the phone (curved)
4. Front speaker position not being centered would mean the use of the phone as a phone would require you to hold it at a rather odd angle for optimal function. Thats why most ear speaker outs are centered with sensors / camera surrounding them.
5. Depth/feel I could imagine this phone if held would be almost as annoying to me as an iphone4, maybe more. The angled edges and depth mean it would feel more like a slab of metal than something I would be using every day.
Just a few thoughts for an "angry" Yorkshireman
Cup holder!

Well, you can at least talk without having to carry around an aditional headset...if you wan't to make notes of the call, you're still free to pull out the original S-Pen.

OP (and any other owners), do you mind sharing your experience with this pen?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1838111
Thanks.
Mine's supposed to get here tomorrow. I'll post a review. It really comes down to what's more stupid looking: 1) talking to a 10.1" tablet, or 2) talking to a pen? I refuse to wear a BT headset when I'm not actually on a call and it takes to long too get it set-up and in your ear when a call's received. With the BT Pen I can put the SIM from my phone in my Note and that way I don't have to carry two devices all the time. That said I'd never consider a tablet a full-time replacement for a phone. I'm contemplating a Note II when it comes out so the BT Pen solves the problem of holding something the size of a book against my ear.
I'm hoping Samsung will release it in black soon

Charge with any USB if its small enough to fit. There's a part to the USB cord (can't find the picture right now) that's if its too big won't fit past the cap which needs to be opened to charged.
Gotta look for that pic.
I ended up getting one of these and is really useful. I have found another little trick which makes this pen perfect for everyday use. If you have issues of accidentally pressing the button when writing which I do, you can unscrew the silver end and when you take it off, you will see that there is a tiny S-pen inside it. Pull the S-pen out and replace it with the button the opposite way and screw the silver end back on.
Now when you use the pen, it does not matter if you press the button, you can continue as normal. If you need the button functionality, just pull out the original one that came with the note and use as necessary.
Because of this little trick, I use this pen the most for any extensive note taking with the added benefit of answering calls when needed.
I hold mine without depressing the button so I won't be taking it apart.
When I first got it holding it was a little awkward; mainly do to it being much bigger than the supplied s-pen but I got over that awkwardness real quick. :victory:

That's cool but just to clarify to others, unscrewing the silver end does not require any modifications, the pen has been designed so that it can be unscrewed. You just have to make sure you turn it anti-clockwise when doing so and the small S-pen inside is not glued in so just drops in your hand when the silver cap is unscrewed and the pen is tilted.
There is no chance of damaging it as long as common sense is used e.g don't over tighten when screwing the silver cap back in.

What is this sensor

Hello,
Can someone tell me what is this sensor plz ?
I put very hard by mistake the needle to pull off the sim card, but the good hole was in the other side of the phone.. Dumb ass one day, dumb ass everyday.
Everything seems fine but..
Thank you !
IMHO that's the microphone for noise cancellation.
But that's just a guess.
It's a noise cancelation mic. It cancels the noise being heard by the bottom mic.

I don't know if you could have punctured the phone's watertight seal, but that's a possibility to consider.
Yes I was thinking about that too, but I'll never use it under water.
there is a mic test - *#0283# from the phone dial pad. Test each mic by speaking into the phone and it will play back. Thats not to prove you haven't damaged the waterproofing though....
I did this on a phone I was returning..... microphone seemed to work though... seems a stupid place to put sim tray imo..the side would have been better (possibly wear the bixby button is )
that's the microphone for noise cancellation. This makes the sound more pleasant

Question Earpiece/loudspeaker quality

Hi,
how is the loudspeaker quality for people who already own the phone?
For me the speakers are not that great. Especially the top one in the earpiece. Calls aren't that great and listening to voice messages or even videos and music is just ok.
I get scratching in the top one pretty early. It depends on the audio quality/source but sometimes it already scratches around 60% of max volume. Especially in calls and voice messages.
It sound very good. Less bass then my s21U, but still ok. Calls are very ok too.
So no scratching for you?
I have got an S20 here and it definitely has a better sound quality with less distortion/scratching...
I was quite impressed. Especially in flex mode when both speakers face forward. Definitely one of the highlights of this phone if you ask me.
So no scratching when listening to voice mails on higher volumes? Just tried video and there the quality is fine. It is voices where my speaker struggles.
The sound Quality if better (subjectively) than my S21+, which I traded in. Less tinny and no distortion so far on loudspeaker call in flex mode.
So in my experience the speakers especially the one on the top is worst than the ones of the S20 which is sad.
One thing I noticed in addition to the bad sound quality is that the speaker grill of the earpiece doesn't cover the 3 holes completely. I am able to look through the holes. The grill only covers a part of the holes. Haven't seen this before. Can anybody confirm this or do I indeed have a faulty product?
I will try to describe this as best I can and you can decide if this is the same thing or if yours appears to be missing parts.
I have the three holes. Inside them, there is what looks like plastic coming from the top that covers about half of the opening. If I angle the phone to see into the gap, there is another cover under it.

Ok, I guess than it's supposed to be like that. Looks a bit weird to me.
How is the sound quality on your end? The quality itself is ok for me, what annoys me is the distortion I get pretty early around 60-70% of max volume depending on the audio. Especially calls, video calls and voice messages get distorted really quickly. Video and music mostly seem to be fine.

Feedback is appreciated . Voice messages in Whatsapp for example, same for Whatsapp and Duo video calls and phone calls as well... Distortion and scratching in the upper range coming out of the earpiece/upper speaker.
I have to decide if I keep the device until Saturday. It would be great if a few more people who own the phone could give some feedback regarding the loudspeaker of the phone during voice and video calls and voice messages
Sounds defective. Just finished testing and it was not only clear, but loud. I know with previous phones, I couldn't hear a thing at any less than one step below the max volume. I had this one at half and it was just as loud. If you happened to start at max, it's possible a speaker blew out. The thing they never tell you is that they aren't truly meant to run at that volume for anything more than a minute or two.

I have heard rumors the speakers are separate between the two, but I'm not sure.
I know Samsung tends to send phones to be repaired over replaced, even when it just released last week. Hopefully they don't give you any trouble if you decide to flat out return it, though.

Yeah the service is ridiculous. I love Android and use it for years for various reasons. But these encounters with bad service drag my mind towards apple. I already contacted Samsung. They offered an exchange. But I have to send in my flip first. As this is currently my only phone due to sending my S20 in for the trade-in I will not be able to do that. I am using the phone with dual sim for private and business purposes. I will try to force Samsung to send me a new one prior to sending mine back. If they don't accept I will withdraw my order and get something else. The trade-in might get me into trouble as it seems. Will never purchase over Samsung directly again. Never had issues with Amazon or apple...
