WhatsApp - Notification issues - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So I had a Note previously, WhatsApp worked perfectly fine.
I notice now that there are a lot of weird notification issues now. I ran some tests and this is what I've found.
Screen On - Clear all apps with Task Manager. Exit to home screen. Meaning, WhatsApp is not running in the background, not running at all. I use my girlfriends phone to send me 10 + messages. I get NO pushed messages, no notifications. Nothing happens. I then launch the app and see that I have 10+ unread messages under her name. I click to read the messages, and exit back to the home screen (either back arrow or home button). I send another message from her phone, and NOW I see the notifications.
Screen Off - (sleeping but app is still in the background) - I send a message from her phone, get NO push notification. But... as soon as I hit the power button to light up the screen (wake from sleep), I get the notification in the bar. I read the message, clear the notification bar.. then put the phone back to sleep. Same thing happens. While the screen is off, I get no push notifications until I turn on the screen.
Anyone having weird issues with WhatsApp? It can't be the app because it works perfectly normal on my Samsung Note. I'm thinking ICS broke it some how.

The notifications works fine for me with whatsapp. The only thing is that when I hit clear in the notification bar and haven't read the actual message, the notification will reappear again.

Same thing here just happened with me on my HTC ONE S , if screen if off and whatsapp is running i get no notification, however as soon as i press the power button immediately i get notified and the weird thing is the notification sound is the default ringtone while in whatsapp settings i have another tone set. Whatsapp was working fine. I tried reinstalling, force stopping, rebooting.
My phone is stock rom no root any help would be appreciated
EDIT (SOLVED): Disable Fast Boot under power options in settings, disabling it fixed my problem (Read it somewhere online)

I have problems with notifications when wifi is on. No problems w/out wifi

I have exact same issue on my Xperia Arc...with or without Wifi...I have ICS 4.0.3
I think it is phone independent issue...

i think you all should stop closing all apps from the task manager and everything would be fine.
you cant shut down all apps and then expect from them to work.
(at004 solution could help too)

Sorry to revive this thread, but I have a solution to the problem (I think) and I thought I might share it.
Some routers flag push messages as "Anonymous Internet Requests" which the NAT dismisses. This will effectively kill push and you'll only get your messages on the next sync.
To counter this problem you can forward the google push port to your phone.
You'll need a static IP for the phone. The port Google uses for push messages is 5228 on TCP.
Good luck with your problems!

ahh.. i got the notification problem.. there is no sound or vibrate for incoming whatsapp messages..
this happen affter i update the apps.. damn!

This happens on my brand new nexus 4

This used to happen way back when I first got my One X, but it is solved now. I thought it was because I had rooted and gone with a newer build, but I got a replacement One X stock with 2.20 and notifications work fine when screen is off.

Same issue in my nexus 4
I'm facing the same issue in my nexus 4.But this is applicable to the application which having the same properties of WhatsApp.For eg Viber.
When we are in the screen of Whats App and Viber i'm getting the notification otherwise not..
I also noticed one more thing unless we open the application the data notification in the signal bar is idle. I don't why its like that.Usually it should be always active.

Facing the same issue with my HTC Desire Z running ICS custom ROM.... Not always.. but 90% of the time. This has made whatsapp a less reliable mode of messaging.. I cant keep on checking my mobile for new messages..

Same here, with the same phone and running CyanogenMod 7.2.0.

Also seeking help on the same issue.
Seems there's no point to use this "instant" messager with this defect.

Go and complain with the makers of it as you have paid for it and using a custom ROM is 100% supported...
This is a users forum guys. If you install custom ROM some things may not work as on stock ROM.
We share experience and knowledge but not complaining about the product or demanding for a solution.
Go to WhatsApp website and tell them about the issue. I doubt they read this post.

Sidekick unknown error on lockscreen

On the lockscreen, on the second slide down thing there is an ! with unknown beside it. After you unlock the phone you can't find that notification any where!
Already checked the notification bar and went and cleared the ram. Still the same. Does anyone know what it is trying to tell me or how to clear it?
I have factory reset the phone one time and it went away, but then came back in a day.
That's where the date goes. I see "unknown" there occasionally. I assume that this is because the phone hasn't gotten the date from the cell network yet, but still has the time cached internally. For me, it generally goes away after a bit.
The one time it didn't go away fairly quickly was when I had Handcent SMS installed and had configured my phone to use it and it's notifications, generally disabling the stock Messaging app and it's notifications. It stayed "unknown" while I had Handcent installed. When I removed Handcent and turned the stock SMS app back on it went back to showing the date.
I didn't test this rigorously, and have no idea if it's causal or just a coincidence. Has anyone else observed behavior like this?
thanks
I'm sure that it's handcent then, I haven't uninstalled it yet. But I bet that's it.
Thanks for the reply. Contacted handcent support about the bug.
I don't think its a handcent issue. I've had the same problem. The only way I got it to go away was to open the stock messaging app and view my last conversation. Then its off the lock screen. Try that. If it works for you...its an issue with stock software. I've had a fewb problems with the stock app. Wish I could just remove it lol

Found it
It seems if you turn off notifications in the Stock messaging app it gets cranky.
I turned them back on and it shows the time on the bottom lock screen.
I then went back and turned them back off and the time stayed, we'll see how long.
This is beyond annoying.
Screenshot, please?
Happns 2 me too glad 2 know I am not alone...

i think that this is a common thing, whenever i dont check my text msg or randomly click the power button, i would see the "!" at the bottom screen..dont know why
I had this problem too on my Sidekick 4G. I am using Handcent but I don't know if that's the cause for me.
What I did to solve this problem: I went into the stock messaging app, into the menu, where I chose "Browser Message". (This menu option is not always present, but apparently shows up when you get a message from your cell carrier.) There was one message listed, and I deleted it. After that, my lock screen displayed the date again.
When you get mms messages, it goes to the stock messaging app as well, so just go in the stock messaging app and view it in there and it will go away. Or, before your SD card loads, messages will go straight to the stock messaging app. Just view all your threads in there, click each one, and the unknown will go away.

Messaging Problems

So first off, I'd really prefer to use the stock messaging app over Handcent. I just like the feel and look of it better. However, I am having a rather annoying issue where notifications of new messages aren't coming through correctly. I have it set to turn on screen and open quick message on receipt, but usually the phone just vibrates and the screen turns on to the lock screen. Some times the screen doesn't come on at all. I'm currenly on the latest CM10 nightly, but remember this problem from when I was running stock (which was why I switched to Handcent in the first place).
Another thing I've noticed - this happens on Handcent and Stock Messaging App - is that in the quick message screen new messages appear twice or sometimes three times, but inside the app itself the message is only there once. I would love some help here.
Thanks!

[Q] Hangouts doesn't notify me unless I exit a thread

/I've never had this problem with Hangouts before, but now if I am SMSing a person, and I put my phone down, I won't get any notification of their next texts, even if my screen goes to sleep. I keep missing messages because of this and it just started happening recently, since I got my new Note Edge. (Though, I also updated all my apps with the new phone, so it could be an app update and not something in particular with the phone. ) My GF says she is having a similar problem actually. Any settings I'm missing or fixes I need to look into? Also, is there a way to get persistent notifications back?
I've noticed this as well. Annoying

why do i some times not get notifications

I have a S6 and have been loving it, but lately (hangs out or other messaging programs are more noticeable) i some times do not get notification or sounds of a notification when my screen if off, some times i don't even get them if the app is running in the back ground but my phone is on.
I have no idea what the issue is and before the question is asked, yes i have wifi/data to remain on when i have my screen off
turning phone off/reset, turning off and on syncing, clearing app data all of these seem to not to help at all
edit more information: only way i have been able to fix it is have trillian and hangout on at the same time ( both google messaging apps) and get someone to send me a message. I will get one of the two notifications. this is a temp fix however it doesn't fix the problem perma.

Samsung Interface Not Updating

All,
First time poster, frequent visitor of XDA Forums. I've come across an odd issue that I don't know how to solve and I'm hoping some of you smarter than me folks can get me squared away.
I have a Galaxy S8+ from AT&T running Android 7.0 and Samsung Experience 8.1.
Problem:
I've recently noticed a delay or completely non-updating interface on my phone. It updates on occasion, but I can't determine what triggers an update. For example, I will pick up my phone from the desk and when I press the power button it shows the accurate time. When I unlock the device, the sense flip clock I use on the main home screen shows an earlier time (could be 30 minutes... could be a few hours). I don't believe it's just the Sense app because I noticed this issue where I checked a facebook messenger app that came and and when I closed the app, it still showed I had 1 notification. I went back in thinking I had another new message, but I didn't. So it was still hanging on to the notification. It happened a couple times with a text message as well. Most importantly, my calendar doesn't alert me prior to an appointment either, even though it's showing in my calendar and an alert is active. If I save an event, and exit, I can normally see the event appear on the on widget immediately as well... but that hasn't been happening. I have to press the widget to open it and confirm it is there (which it always is). Eventually it refreshes and shows up. But that delay is likely the reason why I'm not getting my alerts.
All of this did seem to happen after a recent update Samsung/AT&T pushed out but I don't know for sure. I tried clearing the cache from the boot menu but it doesn't seem there is wide success with that.
And perhaps I'm just not a good enough user, but everything isn't all backed up in the cloud so doing the factory reset to me is always a fairly large task as I have many things to manually transfer out and then back in. Not sure if there are great tools that help with this on a stock phone.
Samsung smart switch works wonders, the only thing that doesn't restore is passwords, you have to have and external SD card for it to work, or plug it in to a computer

That is not the issue. As mentioned, it's not just the clock it's multiple interfaces.

High level overview of issues...
I have the Ring Doorbell app. I get notifications after "live". Could be 5 minutes, could be 1 hour... or possibly not at all. I have the app setup on my wife's iPhone and she gets them immediately. If I restart the phone, I will get notified right away (it's like it runs the app again and then I get the notification). Keep in mind, this is AFTER i disabled the battery optimization feature for the Ring app.
I also notice it occasionally with texting. I won't have any text notification in the notification panel, nor will my messaging icon have a little red circle indicating a message is there. But if I open the app, a specification conversation will have a red circle indicating a new text is unread.
All of this is leading me to believe the Samsung UI itself is not updating and therefore notifications that actually have arrived (from whatever app), are not displaying because of the UI and not because of their own delay.
Because of this concern I have turned off battery optimization for "System UI", "Themes", and "TouchWiz Home". I have not seen any change however.
[Solved]
I was able to determine by various other threads around the web (thought for sure I'd find it here, but I didn't) that the culprit might be the Google app. Supposedly it was fixed in some prior release, but it's not on my Galaxy S8+ w/ AT&T.
Once I disabled the Google app all the odd issues with notifications and clock interfaces and app icons not updating went away. The downside to disabling it is that I lose the Google Assistant functionality which stinks but otherwise there is no impact to using the phone. I re-enabled it at a later date and it worked fine for a few days and then started acting up again. Once I disabled it, the problems all disappeared. Clearly Google app is to blame.
