4g getting stuck in upload, data not working. - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Every once in a while the data (4g) gets stuck in upload mode and wont quit till i go into airplane mode.
Anyone else getting this? Easy fix? thx

Are you on Rogers?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

Well the flag is canadian and it says Rogers so im thinking yes

Mine does that when I'm in bad service.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2

Yea. Mine does it (only in LTE mode). I was on the phone with Robbers yesterday about it and it seems to be an issue with their craptastic LTE network. As soon as I forced the phone into HSPA mode, the problem disappeared. I turned LTE back on today and it seems ok....for now.
So if your phone starts showing the upload arrow (gets stuck there and you have no data) in LTE mode, disable it in your data settings and reboot, and it should be fine.
I think I may disable LTE anyways. I get better battery life without it, far better signal, and I don't really need it. Any download that requires speed I just use wifi.

They were telling me that it had something to do with the shared data family plans

Data Connection issues?

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced issues with their phone taking way to long to establish a connection when surfing the internet. Some times when I click a link it will take for ever and sometimes not connect at all, of course when it does establish the link it is blazing fast. Typically when it cannot establish a connection I will just put my phone into Airplane mode and then turn Airplane mode off and typically after that it is able to establish a connection.
Thanks.
my phone often goes from good 4g reception to just showing two or three bars with no connection type (never auto switches to 3g, occasionally switches to 1x). just now it went from 4g to no connection type, so i dialed *#*#4636#*#* and tried turning the radio off and on, tried changing the radio mode to LTE only, cdma prl auto, and a couple of the other choices and it never seems to make a difference (always poor connectivity, sometimes total data drops, sometimes while tethering and sometimes when just using the phone normally). could just be LTE tower work in many areas, but im looking forward to an upcoming software/firmware update from htc or verizon.

Sometimes when I lose connection, I just restart my phone and everything works again. Try that and see if it helps!

I run into that quite often... sometimes it clears up after 20 seconds, others I have to disable and re-enable the data connection. I'm strictly in a 3G area, and it's done it with LTE on and off, as well as stock ROM and my custom ROM.

Really? A $500 phone and you're ok with having to turn it off and on to maintain a data connection?
I've had several HTC phones, going all the way back to my WinMo phone, and this Thunderbolt has to be the worst HTC phone I've used to date.
On my second device, if I keep it, it'll only be to grandfather the unlimited 4G data plan.
Inconsistent data connections and force closes up the wazoo... Wow!

Well, I've got the quick buttons in the dropdown tray in my ROM, so it's just as fast... still, its something that shouldn't be happening in the first place.

My dig wasn't at you, no offense meant buddy. I'm pretty much fed up with this device and will most likely return and cancel contract.
I've had issues with data since day one and I've never had so many force closes on one device.
This is Verizons flagship 4G device and it's a POS.
I've been on Android since G1, iterated thru the OS with each release thru to Gingerbread on my N1.
Verizon has a rocking 4G network, HTC released a crap phone that was delayed for several weeks. I would have thought that by the time they RTM'd it would have been fixed, or at least better than it is.

It's cool, I know what you mean but I'm liking the phone... Occasional reboots don't really bother me that much - this is probably because sprint wimax is nonexistent pretty much anywhere indoors and is the most unreliable network connection ever. the evo was a solid reliable device, but it was worthless because of the network and i canceled sprint to come to verizon for the thunderbolt. im happy with it despite a few annoyances. once i root and cm is released this phone/network combination will be untouchable.
i felt more comfortable using dialup and praying the phone wouldn't ring and disconnect me than i did using sprint wimax. their 3g is slower than dialup in a lot of areas at the moment, too.

This is driving me crazy also. My phone will constantly drop whatever connection it had (wifi, 3G or 4G) and just sit there with no data connection for a couple of minutes whereby I finally have to reset the radios and then wait while it cycles through 1X and then maybe 3G or 4G if I'm lucky. Or it just goes back to full cdma bars and no data connection. I don't have 5 minutes every time I want to check the internet or email to wait for the phone to reboot or reset radios or do whatever it's doing.
I had the EVO, and while the 4G wimax connection wasn't always stout, if you lost it you immediately grabbed a 3G connection that was solid. This delay/no data connection thing is making me think twice about switching to this phone. Love the 4G when it works, but it holds a connection way too infrequently for me to be useful, and I'm in LA where the service is supposed to be blanketed all the places I'm trying.

4G info that I'm HAPPY to report, but it raises more questions...

I am one of the people who have had a hard time getting good 4G service even though I'm in a. great 4G area. Today I noticed that if I reboot my phone in the area I wish to receive 4G service I get a super-fast 4G connection!
Now, that is great news but why can't my phone do this without a reboot? Does anyone know why this happens?
Have you tried simply turning airplane mode on/off rather than rebooting?
No, I didn't and thanks for the idea. But the phone should be able to do this on its own, right?
I have to toggle airplane mode when in a spotty 4g area. I hope a new radio will help with making a more seamless switch.

What do you mean new radio?
I'm more curious why I was getting speeds upwards to around 34d/l and 24upload before (just a few weeks ago when they flipped the switch for 4g)... and i'm getting weird but constantly lower ranges from 5-20d/l to 8-15upload...
still faster speeds than 3g here, but just odd...

To be more specific (not sure if you know or are curious) a new radio hopefully will report greater signal for your respective area. New radios typically come with ota updates and users may notice greater data speeds and network signal.

Had the same problem too. I went to another city without 4G and came back home and tried to watch some YouTube. Noticed right away that YouTube was buffering. Initially thought that maybe Verizon was throttling me. My speed was from 0.5 to 3 Mbps max. Restarted phone and did speed test; speed went back up to 10 Mbps. That made me happy again.

Do you guys think Verizon will implement an ota update with a new radio, but also something to lock the bootloader back up?
Well we have some people who have posted the radio updates on the forums here, and I don't think they touch the bootloader (not 100% though), so assuming Verizon does push an OTA for new radios tied with a re-locked bootloader, it'd only be a matter of time before XDA figures out how to install only the radio update.

I bought 3 SGIII's and noticed right away that mine was not getting as good of 4g as my two daughters. Long story short, after 2 weeks I got an new phone with the updated VRALG. Was better but not great. Verizon Reps stated it was a known problem with som SGIII's.
Now I am running Synergy ROM and 4G is alot less problematic, even better than both my daughters most of the time. If I do have a problem I will cycle Airplane mode and it fixes it. My 2 cents
I feel like there's something wrong with my phone. The signal is week and I'm getting abysmal speeds. Like .2mb per sec downloading something. I'm also in a highly populated area where 4g seems to be strong here
Has it been like that since you got it?

Well when I first got it the sim card wouldn't activate so the customer service guy had to force it twice to get it to work. The speed will go up in different areas but not by much

If its really that bad. Its a hassle but it'll work...
Dial *#*#4626#*#* or download the "Phone Info" app shortcut, and it'll take you to the same area.
There you can select your radios, Dont mess with anything besides the drop down box with the preferred networks. Set to LTE Only, (defualt is LTE/CDMA/Evdo) when you are in LTE only mode, you should get pretty blazing fast internet. But your SMS/calling outbound and inbound wont work while this is activated.
As for an actual fix... You just need expirament with the different radios... On my Old bionic phone, i remember it was getting really spotty 4g, more than usual. A clean wipe seemed to alleviate the issue. I can't explain why it would it just did...

Data connection problem on S4?

I've noticed that the phone does not switch back to LTE correctly when in range of LTE tower(I know where these are because I work on the towers).
When I'm in range of an LTE connection usually my phone will still be on a slower connection, I have to turn on airplane mode, wait a few seconds, then turn off airplane mode to get the LTE connection.
What is up with that?!

While I cant comment on that directly, I did notice that the S4 data was slow compared to my Motorola ATRIX which is 2 years old. I did side by side speed test in the store and the S4 never went past 2MB download while I was hitting 5MB download. Has me worried a bit.

Possible work around to Data throttling (AT&T)

This is what I did and was able to get LTE back. Can someone else try to confirm.
Do a speed test
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Chose device information
Change radio from LTE/GSM auto to GSM only
Back out to home screen
Dial *#*#4636#*#*

This worked but didn't seem to stick if I reboot, had to redo process over to get unthrottled again.
works; i had tried this a hundred times before, but now it works! thanks!
Will try next time I get throttled. I used over 6.5 GB this month and still have full LTE speeds for some reason.

Today is the first of the month. Is this an old trick or did you just try it today? Because if you just tried it today.... well, you know.
it resets after i turn the screen off (also cuts data connectivity as per my custom settings with root apps), but it works every time if i do it, download something, and shut the screen off.

My billing does not cycle on the 1st. I believe it differs for everyone.
It worked, and stayed on my phone even after reboot.
After I turn back on lte/GSM auto it says LTE for a few seconds then the radio restarts and when it comes back it only says 4G and not LTE. I ran speed test then and its no better then I cycle airplane mode to get LTE back and still no difference what kind of speeds do you guys get once your throttled? I do only get 4 bars of LTE but once I'm throttled I can only hit .54 down and 1 up. That's just ridiculously slow, anything internet based is unusable at those speeds.
Also the worst part is I did a speed test before trying this and I hit 6Mbps now I can't get it back

I have a way of getting past throttling but you won't be able to use visual voicemail. Basically what you do is switch between the unlimited data plan and unlimited data plan with visual voicemail. They're the same plan except one has visual voicemail and one doesn't. When you're throttled, call att and ask to be switched to the unlimited data plan with visual voicemail(or data plan without visual voicemail if you already have it). They'll switch you over and your data resets. It's a pain in the ass calling in every time you're throttled but it's better than being throttled. I've been using this forever and mentioned it a few times on these forums but i think it's too tedious for some.

This happens in an area with partial Spark.
Mine does same thing because I have 3 towers all equal distance from me. 1 is Spark other 2 are not.
If you travel to another location you probably won't see the issue but in short from talking to some eng. the phone is doing 1 of two things.
A) It see's an LTE signal and as LTE is primary it starts to try to connect to it but before it fully does (thus why you never see LTE icon) it realizes it doesn't support the switched fall back required to allow Spark phones to get calls while on LTE so it kicks you back to 3g. This process continues to repeat :/
B) The phone see's an weak LTE signal, as is primary starts to connect but before it fully does the signal is determined to be to weak and falls back to 3g.
In both cases the phone possibly would never show you the LTE icon as that will only show once fully established and it doing this jumping back and forth causes 3g to go and die where forcing CDMA fixes.
The other downfall to this is it KILLS the battery.
Connecting to WiFi won't help with the battery part either as it still does the jumping around.
Your only option is really force CDMA mode only when in an area like this, for me, this is at home only, or live with it and lower battery life until they upgrade the towers all the way.

Hate to share the news but that won't solve your problem, it actually could make it worse as it's now another signal to bounce between.
4G IS always priority when enabled, so regardless of you having a "tower" inside your home now, that does not provide 4G, so if the phone's seeing one that does which is what's causing the problem your issue will remain the same meaning you're forced to put the phone in CDMA only mode still.
The problem isn't with the 3G tower or 3G signal, the problem is the 4G signal being detected but not yet compatible with SPARK due to missing the circuit fall back feature, which the phone doesn't know until it attempts to connect. In some areas where it's partially setup the phone can connect to 4G and just calls won't work, in other areas it's disabled or doesn't exist and this problem happens.
Your solution will simply need to be put the phone in CDMA only mode when in a troubled area only, or just leave it in that mode and have no 4g until everything is upgraded better, or deal with as is.
