I am a USA visitor, am in Washington now. I was in the AT&T store today, was going to buy Captivate off contract and buy AT&T sim with data plan only and use until the end of this summer and then waiting for unlock to use in Russia, but AT&T guys said that they don't sell prepaid sim card with data plans for non-contract PDA phones which is Captivate for $500. I find it absolutely crazy, why then they sell smartphones off contract in this way? For whom? If this phone is full prices when buying it without contract, it is locked with AT&T and it's not even possible to use the internet with an AT&T sim. Well, does T-mobile provide data plans when buying prepaid sim card? Should I wait for unlock and then buy this phone and then connect to T-mobile until this summer? And, well, it's possible for unlock not to arrive so soon
And I heard that there is a Captivate coming to Rogers in the 20th of August, is there any info if it'll come off contract and unlocked(able)? And in this case it is possible for Rogers to send this phone to the New York's hotel, for example?
for data plan only say you have a ipad they will give you a prepaid data plan and you can use it by adjusting some settings
i just got the $20 100MB data plan to use in my captivate. the gophone sim and data work fine.
Don't get the captivate. ATT won't have unlock codes available for a long time.

Yep that's what I was going to suggest. That's your best option. Buy a go phone sim card. Tell them you want the 100mb worth of data and that's it. Pop it into the phone and you will be good to go.
100 mb is probably not enough for me, is it possible to get more with this go plan?
and about captivate, if Rogers starts selling it soon, this phone won't be exclusive and I think there is a great chance to get an unlock code in september for example
If a buy a data plan for iPad, will they give me a micro sim or normal sim? Will it work with captivate for sure?

yes... spend $20 more and get 200MB Also, you can get a sim adaptor if you recieve a micro sim. If you go the ore-paid route, make sure you get the sim from a retail store and not from a gophone kit. I did this and had to get them to swap the sim (for free) to one that works in my new phone. Hope this helps!

You could get the T-Mobile Vibrant at full price (supports Euro 3G on the 2100mhz band for when you go back to Europe, needs unlocking though) and sign up for the Even More Plus Smartphone Unlimited Web & E-mail, no contract, $39.99. Should work.

I hate the look of Samsung Vibrant...
Captivate is far better
Is it possible for Rogers to send phone outside Canada? In USA or Russia?
From everything I've seen, they won't ship outside of Canada. Though if you or a friend can go yo Canada, they will sell you one.
Another option is to find someone in Canada willing to buy and ship the phone.
Sent from my Samsung Captivate.
ok, I'll wait 2 weeks in this case and then decide what and when to buy
100 mb data plan suks
hope rogers' captivate will be easy unlockable
Coming from an Inspire 4G, I have a regular size sim chip. I'm handy with an Xacto and sanding stick, so on friday when my One X comes, should I cut my sim to fit, or just take it into the store and get a micro sim? Or is there a difference between an LTE micro sim and a '4G' regular sim? Also, what exactly does AT&T charge an activation fee for?

There is a difference between a 4G sim and an LTE sim. If you want LTE, you need a new card. If you don't care, go ahead and trim yours to fit, if you think you can do it right. There is technically no need to make any changes to your plan in order to switch to a new phone, or even make the carrier aware that you're doing it on a GSM network.
Whether that violates AT&T policy, and what the consequences of that are, is a separate issue. That you may want to look into.
It should come with a new sim card. The activation fee is you paying for the privilege of AT&T allowing you to continue using their service with new equipment for the next 2 years. Call customer care when it hits your bill. You should be able to get it removed.
Your OneX will come with a new AT&T microSIM in the box (AT&T always does that). You simply call in and activate that SIM instead of messing with your old SIM. The reason you need to call in is to make sure they updated your data plan to LTE plan. Without this step, you won't get any data connection on LTE.
$36 fee is just that, a fee. It covers above mentioned task if you do call. Otherwise, it is just another way for AT&T to make a few buck$ off you.

I've heard that as long as your current at&t sim card has a "25" as the ninth and tenth digits printed on it, it's LTE capable. So, cutting it down and popping it in the One X should be fine if it has these digits. But yeah, you'll probably still need to call them so they can add your IMEI number to your account.
Although, you could always just go to your local store and get a new sim for free once you get your phone if you're like me and aren't ordering it through at&t!
I want to call and ask them to remove my activation fee, do I have to make some sob story about not being able to afford it or something? Or can I just ask them to take it off, and how should I approach that?
If you were out of contract, the TOS allows you to cancel within 30 days without an ETF. Be sure to mention that to them and then say you would consider such a thing if this activation fee which seems unnecessary is not waived.

Yeah... my shipped email says it is coming with a new sim card, so at the least, I'll have a template for cutting it down. I'm 100+ miles from the nearest LTE market, so I might try that first.
What does AT&T need my IMEI number for? Just curious if that's just one piece of information that they want, but don't really need... but gives them one more hook into me.
Will the Nexus 5 sold by Sprint or Best Buy be sim locked? I want to know because sometimes I travel to areas where sprint's coverage lacking to put it politely. I would like to be able to pop in a prepaid sim like a straight talk AT&T or T-Mobile sim to use in those areas while I am there and not have to deal with unlocking the phone through sprint.
I don't want to see people telling me I am wasting my time/money on getting the device through sprint. I get a good discount on my service through them from work and honestly since the network upgrades have started in my area the 3g and LTE I pick up occasionally have been surprisingly good so I am ok with a 2 year agreement on the phone.
Would Google even allow sprint to sell it with a carrier lock on the sim card since it is supposed to be a trueNexus this time around even on CDMA?

I don't believe so. We've been told all the N5's are the same so it would be logical to assume that they won't be SIM locked. But no way to know for sure until someone buys one from Sprint to test it out.
Ok so just a quick update to this. I got mine in the mail last night and decided to rty it out. I put a prepaid sim from a friend in the phone and it worked just fine. Connected to LTE data on AT&T and made calls no problem. So for any wondering if sprint decided to lock the phone I can confirm that is unlocked just as the phone would be if purchased from Google directly.
My M8 arrives today and I'm hoping to activate it without losing my unlimited data. I'm month-to-month and I purchased it subsidized from the HTC website as "upgrade-keep my existing plan" which, by what appears to be an oversight, didn't make me chose a new data plan. Long story short, I plan to put the sim card from my Rezound into the M8 before I ever turn it on because apparently the new sim is provisioned for a capped plan and activating it will switch me from unlimited. My problem is that the Rezound takes a regular (mini) sim while the M8 takes a nano. I have a sim cutter also arriving today and I'm concerned about screwing up my sim in the process of cutting it. That's where my questions come from.
1. Is there much risk to cutting a regular sim to nano using one of these cutters (noosy 3rd gen)? It gets great reviews and has an image (for what that's worth) of being higher quality.
2. I have an old unactivated sim from an Asurion replacement Rezound. If I screw up my current sim cutting it down, will this older (but still unactivated) sim work in my phone and retain my unlimited data plan (same plan as when I got the replacement many months ago)?
3. Can I just go into a Verizon store with my new phone and say the sim doesn't work and get a new nano sim provisioned to my current unlimited data account, even though my "current" phone on their system is a rezound with a regular sim?

I had the droid DNA before the m8. The DNA wasn't a nano SIM and I use the SIM cutter. I was able to use the SIM and kept my unlimited data.
You can go to the store and request a new SIM.
My All New One
Just go to a Verizon store (a corporate one) and ask for a nano SIM.
There is no charge for it. There is no change to your plan for asking for a new SIM, any kind of SIM.

do this. theres no charge if its a corporate store, but "authorized retailers" will charge you for it. if you want to take your nano sim and use it for a mini or micro sim device, just buy an adapter off amazon (~$6)

This. I've kept unlimited through all 3 sized SIM cards. It has NOTHING to do with data caps or anything. You can also go on the website to activate, and when its time to enter SIM card info select 'Send me a SIM Card' to avoid going into the store.
Well now I feel silly for even ordering the sim cutter. I thought I was being proactive. Thanks for the prompt replies.

switching sim cards wont cause you to lose unlimited data. its only if you change your plan or use an upgrade. SIM cards are just tied to a line.

Sure thing. I think some folks may have missed that I kinda did use my upgrade insofar as I received the m8 at the subsidized price for extending my contract. I noticed just this morning that the VZW website has already changed my contract end date to 2016, "my device" is still the Rezound (I assume that'll change once I turn on my m8 with a SIM provisioned to my current unlimited account), and it still shows unlimited with my data usage. Fingers crossed.

I have the exact same issue, Rezound to M8, but the problem for me was everywhere I go they want me to select a plan, where can I bypass this?
Once that phone is activated, your plan will change.
You will have 14 days to go back to unlimited.
You didn't find a loophole.

I have it on good authority that it worked only a month ago from a Rezound to a One Max. It's not an m8 but it is a different sim size (mini to micro). I'm not saying it WILL work. I won't be convinced of that until a receive a bill with a whole month on the new contract with unlimited data, but I have reason to believe it MAY work and it seems worth trying...
I went to the Verizon store and bought the phone outright. Coming from a note 2 with a micro Sim to a m8 with a nano sim, I was worried. However I went on the phone with a customer service agent and they assured me that my unlimited data was going to be safe as long as I wasn't using an upgrade and paying full price for the phone. Sure enough there wasn't any issues keeping my unlimited data so I'm happy. Only issue I have is the phone says it's roaming when its not.

I just got my m8 today....I used some scissors a template and a YouTube video for reference...I cut my sim from my rezound and swapped it for the one that came with the phone. I ordered mine thru HTC with my new every 2. Didn't have to change my plan when buying and after powering on the m8 with my cut sim....it activated successfully and all is good. My data is unlimited and my contract says 2016 now.

It seems to have turned out beautifully. My M8 has been on for 3 days now and VZW still shows two more years under contract with unlimited data retained. I got ballsy and even went into the verizon store with my M8 activated on my cut sim. I asked for a new sim so that NFC would work. The guy looked a little puzzled when he pulled out my ghetto sim, In hindsight I should have taken it out before just to stay under the radar. The only reason it took 20 min vs 2 min was because the guy was trying to put the new sim into the SD card tray. My preliminary advice is get it while you can. The Best Buy website forces you to select a plan so the HTC website will surely be fixed soon.
I currently have the m8 still in my 14 day window, gave up unlimited data to get this phone. Thinking about going tomorrow to return it and order off HTC's store (currently 150$). Just hope that it won't ask to change my plan on HTC's page...
I just ordered a few of these and will be dropping sprint. This will be my first time going to a GSM carrier. Locally here out of the big 4 we have AT&T and T-Mobile. The T-Mobile service apparently sucks here, so I'm going to bypass. In regards to MNVO carriers, we have Cricket, Metro PCS, or Straight Talk to choose from. Do any of you guys seem to have any issues, using this phone, with any of the mentioned carriers?

I've had Cricket for 2 years now, and I have zero complaints..other than that freak like 11 hour or so service outage a while back. Besides that, A+ 4G LTE, love the no contract, the myCricket app, the Cricket Visual Voicemail app, and they have great support. Your Cricket sim will work as soon as you pop it in. I've had both my fiancé and I on the $50 5GB/mo. plan since I started with them..and I actually only pay $45 for each line each month because they knock $5 off ea. line amount for having a multi-line account. Also, when I just paid my November bill last week I was shocked to see that they changed their $50 5GB/mo. plan to 8GB/mo., they also have the Unlimited plan too. But either way, really it's whatever you "need" in that dept..I am a bit of a phone "nut", and have been on every major network and Metro and Boost in the past..and none compare to the overall service+price total package you get from Cricket. As I'm writing this, I feel I should make sure that I say that I do not work for Cricket nor am I getting paid or receiving anything in exchange for this comment lol..just honestly really love the network (which is really just AT&T) and am more than happy to pass on my great experience. Anyway, good luck with the search and enjoy your Honor 8..love that too! Lol ?
I'm in the Philly area with MetroPCS. I generally get 25/25Mbps down/up speeds and good coverage.
at&t go.
Bouygues Telecom in France
I use rogers in Ontario, Canada. I have no issues.
Am using AT&T and have to say no issues drove from South Carolina to New York and not once did I loose signal.
Cricket: Noticed that I never received a text this afternoon.

If T-Mobile sucks for you don't go with MetroPCS. It is owned by T-Mobile and uses the same network. It will also give you a lower priority than T-Mobile customers. Straight Talk uses either of the 4 main networks depending on which you choose.

Any GSM network should be fine. Sounds like you got something weird going on. If it makes any difference, my phone says 4G LTE, not the standard LTE I've seen on every other phone.
