FRD-L04 Users, what carriers do you guys use? - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

I just ordered a few of these and will be dropping sprint. This will be my first time going to a GSM carrier. Locally here out of the big 4 we have AT&T and T-Mobile. The T-Mobile service apparently sucks here, so I'm going to bypass. In regards to MNVO carriers, we have Cricket, Metro PCS, or Straight Talk to choose from. Do any of you guys seem to have any issues, using this phone, with any of the mentioned carriers?

I've had Cricket for 2 years now, and I have zero complaints..other than that freak like 11 hour or so service outage a while back. Besides that, A+ 4G LTE, love the no contract, the myCricket app, the Cricket Visual Voicemail app, and they have great support. Your Cricket sim will work as soon as you pop it in. I've had both my fiancé and I on the $50 5GB/mo. plan since I started with them..and I actually only pay $45 for each line each month because they knock $5 off ea. line amount for having a multi-line account. Also, when I just paid my November bill last week I was shocked to see that they changed their $50 5GB/mo. plan to 8GB/mo., they also have the Unlimited plan too. But either way, really it's whatever you "need" in that dept..I am a bit of a phone "nut", and have been on every major network and Metro and Boost in the past..and none compare to the overall service+price total package you get from Cricket. As I'm writing this, I feel I should make sure that I say that I do not work for Cricket nor am I getting paid or receiving anything in exchange for this comment lol..just honestly really love the network (which is really just AT&T) and am more than happy to pass on my great experience. Anyway, good luck with the search and enjoy your Honor 8..love that too! Lol ?

I'm in the Philly area with MetroPCS. I generally get 25/25Mbps down/up speeds and good coverage.

at&t go.

Bouygues Telecom in France

I use rogers in Ontario, Canada. I have no issues.

Am using AT&T and have to say no issues drove from South Carolina to New York and not once did I loose signal.

Cricket: Noticed that I never received a text this afternoon.

Use the pin to open the tray, pop in your nano SIM card, push the tray back and GO. (I used T-Mob pay as you go before changed to another one Cricket)

If T-Mobile sucks for you don't go with MetroPCS. It is owned by T-Mobile and uses the same network. It will also give you a lower priority than T-Mobile customers. Straight Talk uses either of the 4 main networks depending on which you choose.

Did you buy a new sim card or can you get them for free? I currently have a mini that was cut down to a micro and now, I am thinking of just buying or "getting" a nano from AT&T for this phone. Would they transfer everything for me or how does it work? Thanks in advance!

I cut it myself.
You could buy new one or go to their local store requesting one and ask for "transferring".

Np.

Any GSM network should be fine. Sounds like you got something weird going on. If it makes any difference, my phone says 4G LTE, not the standard LTE I've seen on every other phone.

T-mobile

ATT. Works perfectly.

[Q] Infuse on what other carriers?

So I'm in an all out WAR with AT&T right now. Not going to get into anything beyond the fact that their customer service reps treated me like flaming doodoo while i was nothing but nice. Game over
So any who, what other carriers in the USA will my infuse work on? Including the virgin mobile and boost and whatever other cheap unlimited plans out there?
Thanks!
Kt
EDIT:
Let me add that it has to be a reliable network lol
I think it is called Straight Talk, it uses the same frequencies as Att.

Yea I will for sure. but right now at&t has really screwed things up with me. They've treated me like crap and called me names. yes. seriously. and yes i was being nice. long story like i said.
But I'm living in an area with **** service but don't want to switch to verizon....bc its too expensive.
I'd rather be able to keep my infuse and unlock it.
Any other sources you guys can recommend? Google has brought me back here to canadian threads and not much else.

I understand wanting to keep your current phone, but fail to follow that Verizon is too expensive. The calling plans are exactly the same price as AT&T, the 2GB plan on Verizon is $5 more, and you can get 5 GB on Verizon for $5 more than the 4 GB plan on AT&T.

insurance is triple the price, mobile to mobile is Verizon to Verizon, att is any carrier mobile. possible surcharges ect...
depends on your needs and usage I guess.

not sure but I thought metro pcs was cdma, but they are the only service with lte in my area, if they also cater to GSM or I was mistaken about cdma then I may need to get an unlocked lte something or other and drop att.
anyway strait talk is powered by a number of carriers. they use att similar cards, T-Mobile Sims, and also have cdma phones. the sim is locked to the phone. basically the imei is more important than the sim and if you use the sim and sell the phone your sim is deactivated if the phone you buy is reactivated. also many of the phones use other ways to lock the sim. the only phones that the sim is att and compatible with the infuse are $200 Nokia smart phones as far as I know.
supposedly consumer cellular is att. haven't heard of any trying it.

I use less than 2g a month and barely any minutes, their cheapest plan put me with taxes and fees and unlimited texts at over 130$ ...not just a quote from a store that was my old bill in 09. att is about 110 and I switched it to a family plan with a friend so its only about 80 a month now.
Consumer Cellular is AT&T - it's what my parents are using with my old Infuse.
However, Consumer Cellular specializes in very basic no-frills service - they're great if you want a dirt-cheap extremely light-use plan, but at even moderate use they can become very expensive. For example, their highest data plan is $20 for 200MB.
An Infuse on T-Mobile will be 2G-only.

well....honestly....how bad s 2g? bc i don't have the money to get any other phone and the AT&T is most definitely getting canceled. I live in 11931 zip code...what other options do I have?
Unless....well...there is a case opened with AT&T and I, and the only resolution i could come to was to cancel the service. I had the VP of AT&T on the phone earlier (yes its that bad) and he asked if there was any other resolution and I said I believe my only option since i have no service here (and other things that happened) I have to cancel. He said he'll call me back monday.
Is there another phone option that would get better service? I mean I love my infuse and all my pretty bling cases for it so I don't really want to get rid of it...
does the GS2 get better signal and do the cases fit the same? ::crossing fingers::

Switching phones may be the other option if you want to keep at&t. I don't get reception with my infuse in areas my family or friends do have signal in, and they have at&t. GS2 is smaller I believe, well I know the screen is. But don't know about their signals.

hmm...well tmobile does work over wifi and has super green coverage for my area. my step brother has it and when he comes here he has full service on his galaxy. It would only cost me 40 a month for the pay as you go....and thats compared to about 80 a month now...
I don't have a job yet and that would be a better option....but not if my phone is going to suck balls.
Anyone think it will suck the big one being on 2g?

Well back in the day 2g was cool. But I was stuck on it while everybody was getting 3G then 4g, and now that I'm on the infuse, I've been spoiled by the speeds. So yes, "it will suck the big one". You don't want to sell the infuse?

Ehhhh not really. I have all these pretty bling cases (yes I'm a chick its like shoes and pocketbooks) that probably won't fit the galaxy s2...and on top of that I do really like my phone. I just ordered a larger battery for it too.
I also don't see it getting all that much online...maybe 225 for it unlocked if i figured that out...and that wouldn't be enough money for me to get an s2 without a contract for tmobile pay as you go...or wait can you use that phone for pay as you go? because its not in the same section as the other no contract devices. I'm confused about that.
The main thing is to have a phone that works for less money or the same.

Almost jumped at the offer...but then I remembered Cricket wireless is a CDMA carrier and I want to use T-Mobile, so unless they're selling a factory unlocked phone it would be pointless for me to buy it.

CDMA is typically for US LTE vands. It's what Verizon/Sprint use, and basically it means the phone won't work on GSM netowrks (T-Mobile/AT&T). It's far more restrictive, and you can't just pop in a SIM card and use the phone as you wish.

There seems to be a couple of catches.
-The fine print says that you need to make two auto-bill payments to Cricket wireless, which depending on the plan you pick, is $70-100. It also means you must be on Cricket wireless service for 45 days before you can cancel and use the phone on another carrier, which if it's a CDMA phone, means no T-Mobile/AT&T.
-The rebate offer could be several months before you get it in the mail.

[Q] Probably a little too early to ask but...

Will the Nexus 5 sold by Sprint or Best Buy be sim locked? I want to know because sometimes I travel to areas where sprint's coverage lacking to put it politely. I would like to be able to pop in a prepaid sim like a straight talk AT&T or T-Mobile sim to use in those areas while I am there and not have to deal with unlocking the phone through sprint.
I don't want to see people telling me I am wasting my time/money on getting the device through sprint. I get a good discount on my service through them from work and honestly since the network upgrades have started in my area the 3g and LTE I pick up occasionally have been surprisingly good so I am ok with a 2 year agreement on the phone.
Would Google even allow sprint to sell it with a carrier lock on the sim card since it is supposed to be a trueNexus this time around even on CDMA?

I don't believe so. We've been told all the N5's are the same so it would be logical to assume that they won't be SIM locked. But no way to know for sure until someone buys one from Sprint to test it out.
Ok so just a quick update to this. I got mine in the mail last night and decided to rty it out. I put a prepaid sim from a friend in the phone and it worked just fine. Connected to LTE data on AT&T and made calls no problem. So for any wondering if sprint decided to lock the phone I can confirm that is unlocked just as the phone would be if purchased from Google directly.

Exact same phone, the one at Best Buy just comes with an $100 SIM card.
This is one of the most appealing features of this phone that has so far gone pretty much unrecognized. You can take this single model and jump to most major and prepaid carriers.

So you just stick an AT&T SIM card in there and it'll automatically switch to it? Was your phone already activated on the Sprint network? I'm curious since Sprint would tie in with the ESN activation for CDMA. If it's just as simple as putting in an AT&T or Tmobile SIM, then I'm sure getting it!

I bought a Nexus 5 from Best Buy and I'm an AT&T customer. Yes, the phone will automatically connect to AT&T's network. It took a few minutes to convince the BB employee that the phone would work on AT&T. They also insisted it was store policy that they activate every phone they sell, so I had to pay the $30 activation fee.

I can't remember specifics but I had to change the settings here back to LTE a couple of times. For some reason it wouldn't stick after the first reboot. I can't retest it because my straight talk Sim is not active right now. I can assure you it works relatively easily though.

because all N5's sold in North America are the same model, with the same frequencies (D820), the only thing that may have to be changed is the APN.
this is not like other Sprint specific devices like the G2 (LS980) vs the AT&T G2 (D800)
AT&T - D800
GSM 850/900/1800/1900
UMTS 850/1900/2100
LTE 1900(2)/1700(4)/850(5)/700(17)
Sprint - LS980
GSM 850/1900
CDMA 800/850/1900
UMTS 850/1900
LTE 1900(25)/800(26)/2500(41)

That would have been awesome, I don't understand why everybody charges $100 more unless Google really is taking a hit on each one they sell.
Glad you got them to price match, they wouldn't budge for me. Brought them a few receipts where other people did it, brought them the price printed. They just kept telling me it's not the same phone, got to the point where I was just tired of wasting my time with them and didn't want to wait on the Play Store so I just got it at full price.

I don't think Google is necessarily taking a hit but I do think they are selling them just slightly above cost. You have to remember that Google isnt a electronic sales company like Apple, they make all of their profits from there data mining and advertising business. Android is just another medium to collect data and deliver ads. So they could give these away for free and still benefit. However companies like best buy and sprint make their money off of retail sales and cell phone plans. So they are trying to maximize profits that way.
Anyways bummer that they didn't match for you. I guess I just got luck. I walked in not feeling to confident with my play store ad. They were cool but hesitant. After the guy asked his manager he said that they normally wouldn't match the play store but were will to make an exception.
I am in the same boat but for T Mobile. Anyone know if this phone will work for T Mobile as well? I would believe so but I want to make especially if BB is going to charge me an activation fee.

If I am understanding you right, then you guys didn't have to put a sim in from another phone before activating your phone with the new sim you received from Verizon. If that is the case, that's great. I didn't want to have to cut my micro sim down from my LG G2.
Wow, so the phone has no subscription check right out of the box. That is really good news. Thanks for the info!

No, I had to cut the SIM from my G4. I went to a Verizon store and the little arrogant greeter f***, told me that the phone wasn't authorized for use on Verizon, and they couldn't activate it.
If people are receiving these already, why has no one posted a system dump for devs to start modding?
A sim cutter is only a few bucks on eBay. I have a standard to micro, and a micro to nano, as well as sim adapters to go back up if needed. OR just log into your Verizon account, find a phone that you used previously that took a nano sim, call 611 and tell them you want to go back to it. They'll 2nd day a new nano sim.

I guess I will buy the cutter. I'm just going to tell Verizon I am buying a phone from a friend that requires a nano sim and have them send me one. Kind of hacks me off that Verizon wants people to buy a phone off contract but wants you buy it from them with their bloat. Of course, I can't really say I am surprised.

But what about this?

Droid life is wrong? Verizon is still messing with us? Blasphemy. Red is even getting rid of 2 year contracts and they're still pulling this BS?

Could have just been one employee that didn't know better/didnt care. For best results call 611 and if the 1st level tech can't do it, go to the 2nd level.
I had issues with my first N6 deactivating my sim every time I swapped phones (which I do often). It was a Sprint model and this was before Verizon released their model (so the N6 wasn't in the system). They eventually activated it for me...each time it happened.

How do I capture a system dump?
I am willing to post one to get the development of this phone going.

My bad. I think you'll need root or a custom recovery to pull it. Just sit tight...or try every known root method until one works (maybe)

Verizon does not have the moto x pure on their white list yet.
So those without a nano sim and do not want to try cutting their sim card, this is what I did.
If your account has a device (not apple) with a nano sim, have them use that devices imei to issue you a nano sim. Then when you put that sim into your MXP, will immediately be activated and have LTE.
Was annoying but is one method of activating device.
Tier 2 support at Verizon can manually enter your imei and activate the phone as long as you have a sim. It took me nearly 2 hours to argue my way there, but once I was transferred to a guy who was willing to at least try, he got it working.
For what it's worth, I'm also a prepaid customer who came from an old Moto X 3g phone without a sim. I had ordered a sim from Amazon and it arrived with my phone. I literally cut it to size with my pocket knife, and a template, while sitting on hold.
My prepaid account was zeroed and my plan was changed to the 4g version of my old plan. I then had to pay for the new plan right away, but I was like 2 days from renewal anyway so I didn't care.
My advice to anyone else trying to activate with Verizon right now. Demand tier 2 or a supervisor. Tell them you have purchased an unlocked phone directly from the manufacturer and Tier 2 is the only people who can activate it. Tier 2 will need your imei and sim card numbers then they can do it. My tier 2 guy didn't believe it himself when he got it working, just ask them to try. Also, the phone shows up in myVerizon for me now as a grey box with a model number over it. The phone is in the system, they just have not received the imei numbers beforehand for verification like they do with iphones. So when Tier 1, or the store, tries to enter it in the number comes up invalid. Tier 2 just needs to over ride it.

this is why all big 4 companies are pushing e-Sim technology. The sim is BUILT in and you HAVE to contact your phone provider to activate it. Who can be a c**k tease and say. "Hmmm....you're unlimited?.....you want that phone activated? ehhhhhmmmmmm no. I can "process your request" if you change your plan to a current one that is offered. Do you have any other questions? No? have a nice day.
e-Sim offers NO benefit to the consumer other than taking control away from the consumer.
luckily we won't be seeing it until about the iPhone 7 but samsung is going to use it too..
