Super Slow USB Transfer Speeds - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Has anyone noticed the super slow file transfer speeds one this phone? I just tried to copy a movie over to the phone that is about a gigabyte in size and on my other phones it would usually take a few minutes at most but this phone has been saying "calculating" for several minutes now without any data transfer happening yet.
I have the phone on disk drive mode so I would have thought this wouldn't be doing anything weird like converting the video file on the fly during transfer or anything. It should simply be copying the file over but it doesn't look like it's happening.
This should be a simple feature but it's not working for me at all.

Works fine for me. Much faster data transfers than my DHD.
Of course, I've been moving files via a Mac, maybe there's an issue with Windows + OneX file transfers? Hopefully someone else can confirm.

Speeds have been average for me when compared to the E4GT. These 2 phone are still a faster transfer then my old nexus S. I would say the speed to transfer is roughly 5 min for a 700 mb film. I don't know if thats fast or slow really though.

About 12 ish minutes for 6gb of music. Not bad at all

might want to try a usb port on the back of your computer, or a different cable.

HTC USB Cable
Are you guys reporting fast file transfers (or at least average speed file transfers) using the usb cable that came with the phone or another micro usb cable? This morning when I tried to copy that movie file I was using the micro usb cable that came with my Moto phone (which I thought would be fully compatible) but got those really slow speeds which seemed like it wasn't transferring at all.
My HTC One X micro usb cable was left at the office so I didn't have it with me at the house so I couldn't try it. Now I am at work I guess I can try it with another large file but do not have the movie file I was trying to copy this morning with me.

I notice a change iin file transfer times on my HTC Sensation since upgrading to ICS.
I even tried using TeraCopy, but the time are just as abysmally slow - it definitely wasn't this slow before.
Am thinking to try taking the SD out of the phone and copying directly to that to see if there is any difference.

Yep, that worked, copied to the direct to the card via a card reader very quickly.
I did however choose to fix the bad sectors when that dialog came up, not sure if that helped.

Guessing your posting in the wrong forum since we can not remove our sd cards from the HTC one x

You're right, I thought it was a general issue, and didn't know the One couldn't do that.

That was happening to me and was the usb cable!!!!! lol

when i use total commander under windows it reports between 20 and 30 Mb/s
That is way faster then i had using my Samsung microsd in my card reader

Why the cable could slow down the transfer?
I just bought two of this cables: http://dx.com/p/designer-s-flexible-usb-charging-data-cable-for-htc-174cm-length-73860
And with one of these I sometimes get connection to the computer and with the other connects... but really slow, les than 1Mbit/sec.
Could it be a bad soldering? Could it be that the cable is flat? Could it be that some endpoint is not connected inside the cable?
The original HTC cable is flat: http://www.htcaccessorystore.com/uk/p_htc_item.aspx?i=196200&phone=196001
I must add that if I use the OEM microUSB-USB cable works perfect.

[Q] adb won't connect to Epic on Mac OS X?

Has anyone been able to run 'adb shell' on a Mac and have it successfully connect to the Epic 4G? When I use adb on my MBP running Snow Leopard to connect to my EVO 4G, everything is fine. However adb will NOT detect my Epic 4G. USB debugging is checked on both devices. Also when I build projects in Eclipse I can send them to the EVO but the Epic is not detected. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I can run it on my Mac no problems. :S Thats weird. I even made a system dump on the Mac.
I have the same issue. The Epic is very finnicky with connections on OS X. If I do get into ADB Shell its only for a few seconds before it kicks me out and then I have to restart the adb server in order to get a few extra seconds of connectivity.

I have no problems. I flashed mine with root the first day it was released when I got home. But I also might have a different version that you. I'm using one that came from the evo section when it talks about part one root and part two nand. There's a win32, linux, and mac zip of adb ad it's needed files. I've never installed eclipse.
Could be flaky usb cable. Or try another usb port. Try reboot phone and computer. Sometimes it gets stubborn and a reboot might help.
Thanks for the suggestions, turns out I had to switch cables ~AND~ USB ports on my 2010 15 inch MBP - I'm good to go! ^_^

it likely will error out for you again in the future, but if its doesnt then thats awesome. I had the same issues with getting it to connect to my mac in any form, it connected for a second or two then disappeared (same with mounting it as a usb drive).
Google "galaxy s mac osx" and you will see you aren't alone.
This is just my opinion and it doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Imo, the supplied cable is only good for emergencies or charging (and sometimes it doesn't even do that very well). The only other one I've used was the super expensive one you can buy at a corporate sprint store. Usb to micro usb. Yes it's way over priced, yes you could probably get something just as good or cheaper online, but I'm the kind of person that I want it yesterday. I don't know how good it is but it was a fraction of sprint's was a cable from ultra I saw at compusa. I think it was in the gps/phone/blue tooth headset section. I think it was a three footer for like 10 bucks or less.

Theres a 3,6,12, and one foot cable for those links in that order. I'm doing this from the phone with swype and the hardware keyboard. This can be a real pita sometimes doing this.
Yea, I use the cable from my Nexus One to mount the phone, the one out the box work.

As the OP I should have mentioned - the cable I ended up using was a BlackBerry USB cable - I think that is irony.
The issue might be power, I was having the same issue on my MBA and found using a powered USB hub worked fine, even with the stock cable.

I can confirm the power issue. The only solution for me was a powered USB hub. My 2010 15 inch core-i7 MBP immediately recognized my Epic and I am able to connect using adb. I can finally stop borrowing my wife's Windows machine to mess with my phone lol.
Powered USB links Epic+newMacs.Epic works fine on older gen. But I want a fix update!
Got one problem with the Epic 4G. The phone doesn't connect to the current generation Macs (every other try, it connects for about 5 seconds and then drops out)... and that;s for all new Macs - iMacs, MacBook, MacBookPro, but it does connect to the previous generation Macs. Just walked out of the Apple store and tested it. Bummer, can't tether, can't access memory card unless I open the phone, remove the card, and with an adapter, plug it directly to the computer.... on older Macs, you just plug it in and everything connects perfectly... not on the current Macs! At the Apple store, all they could suggest was waiting for an update from either side -- Android/Samsung or Apple. For now, no connectivity though. I'll try the powered USB, though that feels like a very temporary fix. I'm on a MacBook Pro, and portable most of the time. BTW, yes, both systems are up to date.... oh, hey, just tested.... Powered USB works... still, where can I get a pocket powered USB??
Going a bit further...
Just to expand on the subject. Using a powered USB allows the link so you can access the microSD card. However, I still can't get PDANet to connect for tethering on the current Mac generation. (Again, it works fine on previous generation Macs). Does my cell phone want more power?!
Perhaps it needs more cowbell?
Seriously though, mine needed more power too. I couldn't wait so i bootcamp into windows and use windows.
That's good news
That's good news: If booting into windows will get it to work, that means that the hardware is capable of putting out the power needed. So, it's just a soft/driver issue... not a lost case then. Just hopefully someone in either the Apple side (more likely) or the Android side will care enough to push for a fix.

USB/PC slow transfer speed

I connected my new thunderbolt via usb to my pc and my old eris to move some stuff from my sd card to the new one and a 200mb folder was going to take 80 min! I let it sit for 2 min thinking it wouldn't actually take that long but it was. I pulled the card out of my thunderbolt and used an sd adapter, transferred the same folder and it took 30 sec. Even navigating the sd card on my pc directly from the thunderbolt was choppy. Is the thunderbolt usb drive interface really horribly slow? I have not yet rooted my thunderbolt. Is it faster with the custom roms?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
I've not noticed any slowness with USB. Is it a USB 1.0 port?
Nope. Using my Thinkpad T61p. It's plugged directly into the laptop, no hubs, using the htc provided usb cable. Tried my Eris on that port as well and it downloaded super fast to my desktop but not so much with the thunderbolt. Hmm... interesting. I was hoping to see lots of people jump in and say yeah its just slow. I'm going to root this weekend, hopefully that will fix it...

Probably an easy question but, External Hard Disks?

Hi All
Finally been able to order a TF700 from Amazon in the UK, I'm off travelling around Europe at the end of next week and intend to take the 700 with me, my question is can I take my external 1TB drive with me and use it as storage (for films, music etc)
Thanks all in advance
Should be doable, although much depends on the power consumption of the drive -- I haven't got a portable model on hand to test it for you. A power-hungry model could either drain the battery too fast to be practical, or it may just be plain impossible to power it from the tablet, causing it to just bork out on you.
Obvisouly, a powered model would cope just fine, but that's not very practical when travelling, isn't it? I have read reports of people using external hard drives on the TF700 before, so I guess it shouldn't pose too much of a problem, though.
Off-topic: where are you going?
assuming you have the keyboard dock too, not only for the USB port but for the extra battery capacity too.
but my WD 750gb works just fine!
I'd suggest MXPlayer 'cause the stock apps suck at decoding divx and other random container formats.

Cool thanks, just ordered a Toshiba Stor.e Alu 1TB (ebay special buy) which is bus powered, should both be here on the 2nd so will plug it into the dock to check.
I am heading down to Spain as I have an apartment there then going to see where the mood takes me, I have 3 months off work (well I say off work, taking the Infinity with an RDP program and my iPhone so I can tether the data) that way I can still work from where ever I am!
The infinity + dock seems the perfect device for me, can carry it easily, brilliant battery life and the full qwerty keyboard.
I plugged a 500GB bus powered USB drive into the dock USB port and it works great!
My 2TB Western Digital MyPassport works just fine. I did format it to get rid of the silly software, though. Don't really notice any powerdrain at all.
I've somewhat accomplished this before with a 2-usb hard drive. The main usb port for transferring I plugged into the infinity, and I plugged the port for power into a portable external battery. It was recognized as another SD card on my infinity. It worked flawlessly when transferring 800MB+ files.

Yup. It works. Mine is WD 1TB, connected via USB of the dock.
I've tried plugging in a standard usb drive (8gb thumb drive) in the usb port before but I can't browse to it in the stock file browser,"external storage"just shows as empty. Do you use a special app for that?

Not only is an external a great solution, and works perfectly with the dock. It also has a really nice transfer rate. I was getting over 20mb/ps transferring from my 128gb flash drive to the micro sd. I have yet to spring for a 128 sdxc for the dock, but it's on my list.
So far I tried:
- External usb 2.0 disks
- Wireless mouse
- Linksys usb to ethernet
- Usb sticks
The dock's usb port seems to accept anything: even ethernet that allows me to even use my Infinity in the basement of my house (only wired connections there)

I'm one of those people that traded in there TF201 for TF700... I know this was asked and answered early on in the TF201 threads, so I guess I just carried over from there and never bothered asking it again.
For those that care I also had success with a USB 3.0 External right away. It comes with a secondary USB to power cable but that has never actually needed to be used. The USB 3.0 is actually an internal from my laptop in a USB 3.0 case (Put a SSD in lappy ). So long story short USB 3.0 devices should also work but at 2.0 speeds.

right so that we have established that external USB hdd's work, what about external dvd drives and other external devices?

I can test it tomorrow, but I would imagine the storage part of it would work. The issues you would run into is not being able to write to it, not being able to play a regular dvd movie as it would have to be mp4 formatted, and other minor issues that require software support.
We already know gamepads, keyboards, mice, flash drives, sd card readers, and other such work..

[Q] Can't use OTG on Tab 7.7

Hi all, I have had a Tab 7.7 for 12 months and have been using an OTG adaptor to copy jpegs from my camera's SD card to the external SD card in my Tab. All of a sudden the whole process has stopped working. My Tab 7.7 has ICS 4.0.4. and is NOT rooted. Previously when I plug in the OTG adaptor the File Manager appears showing the folders on the SD card in the adaptor. When I plug it in now I get the message "USB mas storage removed safely" and that's it. I was thinking I might re-flash the rom but since I can't even get Odin to load on my windows 8 PC (it flashes on the pc monitor then goes off) I really can't be bothered. I went to the trouble of running Odin on a windows 7 PC at least it loaded on 7 but wouldn't acknowledge the Tab being connected. I thought I might have a driver problem, but has anyone on this site tried downloading a driver for samsung tab 7.7, it's a bloody nightmare. You get all sorts of crap from checking what drivers are missing or outdated on your PC then having to by a copy for $29.95. I'm really over it. When I rooted my Mororola xoom 12 months ago and flashed ICS I had no problems at all, there wasn't a link like we have now that sends you to a site that takes 5 hours to download a tar file or you could buy a subscription and do it in 9 mins. Can anyone please offer any assistance with my problem before I toss it in the bin. Many thanks

USB 3.0 Problem

Hi!
Got my Note yesterday, now I got a problem, again. I can't get it work on USB 3.0 no matter what I do (I'm sure about this but I ask this anyway: am I right that SM-P905 have USB 3.0?)
Okay, to the problem:
When connected to USB 3.0 I don't have option to choose USB 3, I only got MTP and PTP
- I updated Kies 3
- I reinstalled drivers (from Kies)
- I have 2 USB 3.0 ports on my PC so not so many to test but:
USB 3.0 works on my Note 3 (SM-N9005) on both USB-ports, It also works well with my Note Pro USB-cable
Note Pro doesn't work (don't give even option to choose USB 3 mode) on any of these two ports. I also tried both ports using my Note 3 USB-cable, but still no luck
So any ideas?
ps. I got ASUS motherboard and I found out someones having similar problems with their Android devices. Reason was ASUS Ai Charger -utility, but I don't have that one never ever istalled on my PC. Oooh, and one more thing, I'm using Win 7 Home Premium (x64)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Updating BIOS and reinstalling Windows did the trick, now it works like it should
What exactly makes you say it doesn't work? Are you completely unable to transfer data to/from the tablet to a PC, are you not seeing a difference between transfer speeds using a USB 2.0 cable vs a 3.0 cable, OR is the appearance of everything working there but you are wanting the USB 3.0 nag screen to pop up to give you an indication that you're indeed using USB 3.0 ?

When I connect Note to PC USB 3.0 port, pull down notification bar and click USB notification, I get ONLY option to use MTP or PTP. USB 3.0 is not listed there as option. I also transferred about <10Gb size file to Note and it took about 50min, which really is loooooong time..
Okay, here is screenshot about what I meant. Can you please say how it's in your tablet.

Same - Mine connects MTP and I can see it and transfer files but on my tablet I get a Icon in the top tray that says connected to USB 3.0
Same here, when I'm getting a USB 3.0 connection to my PC I'll get the 3.0 indication in the notification screen.
I can't get 3.0 to work with my rMBP but it works with my Windows 7 based workstation and I can definitely see an increase in file transfer speed to the tablet when the USB 3.0 cable is used in a USB 3.0 port. Just did a test from a hard drive on my PC to the tablet, 2.1GB file transferred to internal memory on the Note Pro in 1:18 using a USB 2.0 cable and 0:48 using the stock USB 3.0 cable so I'm getting about 45mb/s with 3.0 and 27mb/s with 2.0.
Okay thanks. Tomorrow I'll check again if notification bar shows USB 3 or not, can't remember right now (still got thought that not). I'll get back here and tell if it's working or not.
EDIT: Yup, no USB 3.0 connection, in notifiction area there is that standard USB icon and it's not saying 3.0
EDIT2: Is there some way to find out if Note charges using USB 3.0? Shouldn't the 3.0 be a lot faster on recharging than 2.0, but how I can know which one it uses?

Okay, back to subject..
Does USB 3.0 affect anyway to charging speed? Like if I use stock wall charger with 2.0 or 3.0 cable?
What's your charging speed? I did test and from 50% to 55% it took 15 minutes and from 50% to 65% 45 minutes (which makes average 5%/15min)
To charge I used stock wall charger and stock USB 3.0 cable. I didn't use my NP while charging and mobile data / wifi was OFF
Can you please check how fast is your Note Pro to charge? I still can't make my note to work on 3.0 mode when connected to my PC and I'm trying to find is the problem on my PC or Note before sending this to repair
How about trying Gsam Battery Monitor and observing the charging characteristics that way. It will give you charging current.

With wall charher charging current is 1900mAh, which is normal I think.
Now, if I plug my NP to my computers USB 3.0 port, I get BSOD --> PC reboots and I plug again --> now it works, but still not on USB 3.0 mode. So it could be with drivers or something, tried again install device drivers with Kies 3 but no luck. What could I do? I don't have skills to remove all the drivers and start from clean table (any other way than formatting my pc and that's not gonna happer for a while )
Any ideas?
Okay, just tried with laptop (Win 8.1) and my NP is ok, it connected using USB 3.0.
Now what, if my external HDD and Note 3 works on my own PC via 3.0, what I can do to make my Note Pro work also??
Problem have to be with drivers or something..
Mine doesn't show the "Use USB3.0" option that my Note 3 shows, but it clearly says "Connected as a media device via USB3.0" in the notification bar. (See attached screnshot)
Also, it just copied 1.03GB in 16 seconds from my laptop to my NotePro.
Clearly they removed the USB 3.0 setting from the menu, and it is now done automatically.

I'd start with USBDEVIEW. Google it. Run that with no android devices connected to the PC. Uninstall all drivers related to any android device and reboot the computer. Then try again.
If that doesn't work, consider repeating that, rebooting and then updating the chipset drivers for your motherboard.
After that, I'm out of ideas.
Us Mac users have the same issue; the tablet is simply not recognized as a USB 3.0 device on my rMBP which is running Mavericks. It doesn't matter if I'm running windows as a virtual machine in VMWare Fusion or not so I'm thinking its at the driver level of Mavericks.

I updated them twice, just to be sure. I got 2x USB 3.0 ports on my PC.
My external HD and Note 3 works well with both of them. And Note 3 also works with NP 12.2 cable.
Just my NP wont work no matter which port or cable I use.
On my friends laptop NP 12.2 with the cable that came in the box works well, immediately connects as 3.0 device.
I think I'll quit with this. Don't have the knowledge find out where the problem is.. I thought maby BIOS update might help, but since everything else works fine, I wont do that because the risk of totally f*** up my computer.
But if anyone here got any other/more ideas, I'm listening

You said you had an ASUS motherboard, right? I'd go ahead and update the BIOS, it's pretty fool proof with the newer ones (which you have USB3.0, so it's a safe assumption that it's new enough.)
I also have an Asus motherboard, funny thing is, my Note Pro does show the USB3.0 indicator in the notification bar, but I'm copying files over right now via Linux and it's copying at 9.9MB/s. That's pretty horrible. Added to that, my Note Pro won't charge from the USB port on my computer, but it will from the wall charger. It has a big red X over the battery when plugged into the PC. So I'm not sure if that's somehow related.
Another thought about both of our problems, is that maybe the cable is a little loose or something is in the port-hole. I know mine was a bit flakey for a bit there (as in I would plug it in, create a folder... then tried to rename it and it said it couldn't access the device... I had to try it three times after unplugging and plugging it back in.)
It doesn't make sense though that it's a BIOS and/or driver issue if you also have a Note 3 and it's working through USB3. I know on mine, when I tried it in Linux (can't recall if I did under Windows), it was extremely flakey there too. The Note Pro just autodetected it, but still copied slowly. I'll have to try that under Windows as well now.

Yes, you may want to update your BIOS.
(For the record, I'm using an Asus N76VB with the factory BIOS, no issue).
Hm, maybe a silly suggestion... Are you using any type of USB charging setting? I know some of these Asus motherboards come with an option to overvolt the USB port to enable fast charging.

Not related. A USBport doesn't supply enough amperé to register as charging. Even my old Galaxy Tab 2 10,1 has that issue.

I have that issue with my Note 3 and even my TF700T since day 1. It's an MTP bug. And now since 4.4.2 I can't rename anything on my Note 3 without explorer.exe crashing. Different pc's, different OS's, different cables, no difference.

I did read somewhere that Asus AI Suite (program to tune up voltage or something for usb charging) can somehow do "harm" to USB3 connection, but I don't have that one even installed.

Well... I too see that red x on top but my tablet charges anyway (slowly byt still charges)
The funny thing here is like I said: My Note 3 works perfectly when plugged to USB3, but my NP doesn't like recognize that it's plugged to 3.0 port. It just acts like using 2.0. Same PC, same cable, different device.

Yeah, I know mine isn't charging because I watched, even after plugging it into my computer, it slowly go from 70% battery down to 65%.
When looking at what is hogging all the battery, it's the retarded Indexing service. I'm still in the process of seeing if there's a fix for that, but it really seems like it's having an issue (which would also explain why mounting it on the computer is flakey, since they could be trying to read the same file systems.) Oddly, my Note 3 doesn't have any of these issues (except actually mounting as USB3). In fact, I was starting to suspect my PC at work had crap USB ports, but it's just the stupid Blackberry cable (it only successfully charges the blackberry, not my Note 3 or anything besides my mouse that I've plugged into it.)
