Jealous of Sprint new EVO?

Okay so i just left Sprint for Verizon to get the thunderbolt and was royally pissed off lol, but now i'm not. Okay, so i been on the fence contemplating going back to Sprint and decided not to. When i had my EVO (which i still do waiting to sell it), the support it got was amazing, but my 3g on it was sub-par. I live in New York, and i was seriously getting horrid connection. I even thought about all the graphic power the new one is getting, but then i said to myself "half the games in the market don't even use all that power", so isn't it redundant to desire such a powerful phone with so many games work fine on the thunderbolt? I mean, i sound like i'm trying to justify my switch, but just thinking out loud for anyone who feels the same as me. And what up with all the hate on the thunderbolt by Evo users? I thought the Android community was suppose to be together, some of them sound like whining Apple fanbois.

That's how it happens. It's called "latest technology". I argued with my girlfriends mom for about an hour.....

I am not jealous of the new EVO. The reason is two. First I have a moto xoom, so I have a powerful device with a screen big enough to enjoy the power. Second, like you said, is that Sprint is crap. I would have said the opposite a week ago, but I would have been in denial .
The EVO was better than the iPhone 2g/3g/3gs' and Sprint was better than AT&T that I had had for the 3 years prior. As such I was happy with the phone, which was somewhat crippled by the sprint network. The biggest thing I hated about Sprint, was they were INCONSISTENT. Didn't matter if it was peak or off-peak hours everytime I grabbed the phone I had no way of knowing if it would give me an efficient or inefficient experience. In the car I used a Wilson Sleek signal booster which made things like streaming over Pandora or Slacker consistent, but it's a cradle so its not idea for much more than that.
The thunderbird thus far has proven to be a better phone than the old EVO, but more importantly it seems to have hardware that works well on the network. Anyone with an EVO even in a strong 4G area can attest to the 30+ seconds it takes to get a 4G connection, and how it never seemed to come back if the connection in the area was less than idea. The one time so far that my EVO went to 3G, it went back to 4G almost immediately. I live in North Las Vegas, but my part of town has not been the Boonies for 20 years.
In summation. Even if Sprint "does it again" and releases a super friggin awesome phone, as the EVO was, it wont make up for their less than ideal network. Sprint is not bad per se, they just aren't great.

Well of course i know that, just bummed as soon as i jumped ship they release this haha. The obvious, of course, is that we will get something similar also, but just wanted to speak my mind for those who feel like me. I focused more on the specs in the original post, but i was also curious why almost every website i got on about the thunderbolt you have some uptight mad Evo user bashing it, quite comical and sad at the same time.
@setite the 4g on sprint was horrid, especially indoors.

I too left Sprint (of 5 plus years) for the TB... I am jealous of the Sprint's new EVO, but not their 2.5 GHz WIMAX.. If hey get their 800MHz frequency up and running with LTE or even move WIMAX there or maybe even WIMAX 2, then I shall return

This makes the verizon thunderbolt look like a STEP CHILD… Verizon wanted to have a hand me down product they got it. Everyone knows htc doesn’t do business with Verizon never and they got exactly what they wanted last year’s evo but the funny part is our current 10month old htc evo 4g is still better there isn’t even a toggle 4g switch on there device it just keeps runing and too top it off there bootloader is locked another verizon trick. verizon needs to get away from samsung i love my fascinate but samsung is sooooo bad with customer service since officially we are still on 2.1 but thanks to the devs i have froyo

I doubt it was anywhere as fast as AndIRC did it, first night=root, second night=unlock bootloader/custom recovery

Nice hardware is useless when the service is useless. I've been a Sprint customer forever but lately their 3G is useless and 4G coverage is spotty and slower than when it was first rolled out. The HTC Thunderbolt hardware is no comparison to Samsung Epic 4G, mainly AMOLED screen/CPU/GPU performance, but the superior LTE connectivity makes the hardware inferiority a small compromise.

I will never go back to Sprint ever after they treated me terribly when I complained about getting 1x speeds in the city of Chicago outdoors in an area marked "best indoor 4g coverage" on their map. With Verizon I get 4g anywhere indoors and don't have to stick my head and arm way out the window to get decent data speeds. And on Sprint the decent data speeds are literally 400kbps. see thread "data speeds, wtf?" in the Evo general forum.

I'm about ready to make the jump. I love my EVO but the data is very spotty, sometimes decent 5-6MB DL but quite often less than 1/2 meg. I live in a 4G city too.
Price is getting closer too. I have 3 smart devices...

T-Mobile us

I had T-Mobile for over six years and threw the years service had gotten bad. All the big company's offer 4g lte the real 4g and we got hspa. Fake 4g. It feels like 3g at best. T-Mobile starting to charge for tethering and raised the price on plans. I started to think me and my Verizon friend pay almost the same a month for unlimited plans. I try my best to defend T-Mobile but I have nothing to brag about prices as high as the other companies which was the reason I been here so long . We don't get nearly as many good android phones as other. T-Mobile put out almost the same phones two months after they release a new phone example. I bought a Samsung vibrant then they come out with a galaxy s. Same phone but that had a Ffc . I buy the sensation then they conme out with the amaze. Same Damn phone with a different camera. Recently I saw a phone called the blaze, which is just the galaxy s 2 with a smaller screen. Just wondering if anyone else is thinking about leaving T-Mobile . Why we pay extra for 4g when we are not getting 4g. T-Mobile should market it as 3.5g with 4g speed at times. Im surprised no one sued them yet.

That is because they can't sue. Nothing guarentees you will received 4G speeds at all times.
I have considered leaving them as well but stay with them for a multitude of reasons.
1 - Affordable
2 - For what I use my phone for (Mostly Data and Texts not so much talk) they do fine
3 - If I go over 2GB because I stream DI.FM a lot they don't charge me $10 bucks when I go over.
4 - Verizon is too expensive for what I get, ATT isn't much better, and the service for Sprint here sucks

Definitely prefer tmob over the rip offs of the other carriers.

I get 12-13 Mb/s in Houston/Mission bend area.
Sounds pretty fast to me considering I can download 100mb in about 2 minutes.

I would be shocked if a member of XDA actually pays for tethering, regardless of carrier. If so they need their member card revoked for not reading any of the threads.
I have T-mo and I get 7-10mb downloads typically so I'm very happy with my speeds. I tether my G-tab and laptop regularly without issue or extra expense.
I rarely have dropped calls but they happen. I'm not sure any carrier is immune no matter what they say.
I do believe VZ will have better service, but since it's marginal for my situation I'm sticking with T-Mo.
Everyone's situation is different. A good example is I had no need for a FFC on the Vibrant. It's probably one of the best phones I've ever owned. Also great to learn rooting on since it's very hard to brick. Amazing phone. My brother didn't get the S2 because it's humongous so I may recommend the Blaze if it's the same.

First, HSPA+ IS 4G. As much as LTE is 4G. If you're looking at HSPA, that is 3G. Second, I bet you could put a phone like the Amaze with its 42 mbps radio up against most anything else... if you were in the top market for both (HSPA+ 42 vs. LTE). Hey, my Sensation with a tiny 14.4 radio can out do LTE in the right location.
But hey, if Tmo is no longer the company for you, feel free to choose another carrier. That's the beauty of competition.

My last phone was an AT&T iPhone, so I know all about slow mobile internet. HSPA+ is at least slightly better in my area, but not by much. I'm on contract so I haven't really considered leaving, but maybe I'll think about it some more when commitment is up... In 2013.
No LTE does suck, but ah well.

[Q] Quick AT&T One X - TMobile Question

I am considering buying the AT&T One X from Amazon Wireless at 550.00 and then using it with my TMobile prepaid no contract services.
1) Is this even possible? How would I be able to use AT&T's phone on Tmobile? I know all about GSM compatibility, but once I have the phone in my hands, how do I go about using it on TMobile?
2) I am deciding to get either this One X or the unlocked 400$ Nexus. Which one would you all go for? I would prefer stock ICS, but the One X has upgraded hardware. I use my phone for a lot of emailing, texting and browsing. The One X's camera features would also come in handy when hanging out with my newborn.

for your purposes a Gnex makes more sense. It's $150 cheaper and able to fully utilize T-Mobile's network speed. a HOX once it gets sim unlocked will only do EDGE speed on T-Mobile's network.

You mean I wouldn't be able to get LTE, right? I knew that but assumed I would get standard TMobile speeds, but now your post makes me think the One X wouldn't operate at the same or better speed of the GNex or a standard Tmobile smartphone. Is that true? If so, why?
And by the way, if the One X will underperform then is it best to just choose between a Nexus and One S?
Besides LTE and the screen, what is the difference between the X and the S? (US versions)

T-Mobile doesn't even have an LTE network, and has no plans to deploy one until 2013.
The AT&T version One X does not support the 3G band used by T-Mobile (1700/2100 MHz). So it would only get voice and EDGE data.
The One X would need to be SIM unlocked in order to use it on T-Mob. There are paid services that can get you the SIM unlock code. The One X seems harder for these types of vendors to unlock than other phones. Most can't do it, but there is at least one online service that can. Just search around this forum, and you'll find a discussion about it. Similar situation, with T-Mob customers looking to use the One X.
Or you can buy it pre-unlocked from certain vendors. Negri Electronics has it unlocked for $590.

Essentially the one S is the X without lte and not quite as nice a screen imho a better phone than the gnex. However the gnex is more flexible at switching carriers since it has pentaband.

So due to the difficulties with unlocking the one x and the possibility that the One x would be able to only use Edge speeds, is it wise to just drop plans to buy an X and focus on the S or the GNex?

You could also get One S, which is made for T-Mobile network...the One is an awesome phone...much better than nexus but does cost more..keep in mind the one x requires a micro similar card like the iPhone..don't know if T-Mobile has that...if u do have micro similar then u still only get 2g speeds...higher on wifi...u could always buy phone and get service w att without contract and get Japan+ or lte depending on your area...unless u are not in us..

That's up to you ultimately if you want to decide against the one x because of data speeds. Its really your preference, say if you are on wifi majority of the day and don't use data while you're out and about then edge speeds would not be too bothersome to you. The one s is better than the gnex because of its better proccessor, and better camera, but the one s has a smaller lower resolution screen(which is a turnoff for me). But really its all preference. You need to do some more research on your own to get a better idea of what you are buying and really play with all the devices to make a decision.

let's assume the data speeds were the same for the X and the S, what puts one above the other? Is it only the screen? (ignoring--for me--inconsequential things like dimensions, width, weight, etc)

Just to clarify, it's not a 'possibility' that the X can't use T-Mo's 3G & HSPA+, it's hard fact. The X does not possess the supported radio bands - locked or unlocked - to physically operate on the T-Mo networks post-EDGE. Buying a One X and planning to use it for T-Mo is probably not going to be satisfying and really may prove quite useless since the EDGE network (the only network the x could potentially use) is not going to serve much of today's data needs. aside fro mail syncing in the background, EDGE is no longer practical to handle the demands of most mobile data uses, such as streaming video/music, online gaming, downloading movies, music, and podcasts, etc. In the event that you are not using these types of services and woudl be fine with the outdated speeds of the EDGE network, you may nto really find a phone like the One X, S or GNex to be necessary.
Assuming you will use these services, you will be FAR better served with a GNex or One S. The S is allegedly an amazing phone, incredibly similar to the X in terms of software, just with a smaller screen and lack of LTE (and the inclusion of the radio/bands needed to access T-Mo's HSPA+ network). I've not used a Gnex, and with my experiences ont eh One X, I would say try the One S out. I think you will be very pleased.

Yes in my opinion the X's screen puts it above the S. Otherwise they are identical.

The screen is substantially better on the X, but the while phone is much larger, too. If you dont want a huge phone, then maybe that would steer you to the S. For me, the size of the X is a plus. The phone's finishes are different, with the S being a special type of formed aluminum case and the X being a matte finished polymer. These are the principle differences. The other big one being LTE for the X. Technically the processors in each phone are a different model number, though they are actually identical, just with the addition of LTE on the X's chip. You are asking for an answer assuming data speeds are equal, which they may be at times on the LTE vs HSPA+. Overall, though, the LTE is goign to simply be better for data. It also provides a uniquely improved cell signal in urban areas due to the LTE band (700-749Mhz on ATT) being a low frequency. think FM radio vs AM radio: AM is longer frequency and good for distance, and FM is lower and penetrates buildings and wall better and provides a higher quality of sound (data). The LTE radio also will drop back to HSPA+ when not in an LTE area, so you are still getting the HSPA signal capabilities, as well. for me LTE is a HUGE benefit.

My comment briefly mentionthat LTE is faster, but I didn't go into data speeds,just physical differences in the phone. And if you want to categorically eliminate LTE from the discussion, just eliminate the whole conversation because right nowthe X doesn't even work on tmo. I was just answering what was asked aas thoroughly as possible.

International One X vs AT&T One X? Any advice from people with both phones?

I currently Have a ATT HTC One X back ordered on Amazon. While waiting it got me thinking maybe I should just grab the international version instead. Im so confused on what to do. Paying full price is not really a problem because it will just save my upgrade. Also I dont have LTE in my area yet, and even when it did come I think I would be fine with 4-6 mbs that HSPA provides. The main reason I want the INT is because of the extra storage space. Ive heard the CPUs are about the same (maybe S4 even being a little quicker). Hows the battery life on both? Is there any other factors or differences I am over looking. Any input from some one with both phones would be great! Thanks.

Thanks for the link, reading it now. Ya I am on sprint now until I get my One X. Was about to call and cancel my service the day before it was going to ship but then it got back ordered. Glad I didn't yet lol. Either way I am switching soon, either going to get INT version or just bite the $50 bullet and go get one from AT&T or Best Buy.

My 2 cents.
I had the Intl One X on release and it was very buggy.
To the point that I sold it in a week and stayed on my iPhone until the ATT version came out.
The ATT version is rock sold over the Intl version, but I'm really missing the extra storage.
If there were new software updates on the Intl version that fixed all the issues I might swap back, yes I do have LTE were I live and yes its super fast, but what I do on my phone doesn't really require a 20 mb download. I'd like to store ripped videos for travel and not rely so much on streaming which you have to do on the ATT One X.

Reason I ask, do you know for a fact that you will have decent HSPA+ speed on AT&T where you need it? My house is supposed to be in a 4G HSPA+ coverage zone. But I was getting dismal data speeds often around 0.2 to 0.5 Mbps, and maybe 1 Mbps at best. Now on LTE, I get 27 Mbps in the same location.
At my work, I was usually getting from 3 to 5 Mbps on HSPA+. Not bad, and just fine for most things. But the HSPA+ at my house were near useless sometimes.

Why wouldn't you just get Evo LTE? It has a bigger battery and a sd card slot!

Everybody says they're fine with hspa+ until they actually experience LTE speeds. When I went back home too Houston and was consistently getting over 44Mbps down, I was literally blown away. It's that much of a difference.

My international phone arrived today. I think I'm returning it. Staying with a US model and its warranty seems safer.

I was thinking the EVO 4G LTE for those same reasons, but apparently the battery life is just OK. It proves yet again that hardware specs mean nothing if Carriers screw up the firmware. What other explanation could there be for poor battery life, other than CDMA uses alot more battery than GSM?

I just switched from sprint to the att one x and its wayyyyyyy better!!! And the speeds are way better! I was happy to get 6 down and today I got an lte signal (live in cleveland not official) and I got 50 down outside and 35 inside my house which is better then the .035 from sprint lol

You said it CDMA drains battery faster thats why they prob put the bigger battery in there. No sd card and only 16 GB of internal (actually even less lol) will suck but ill get used to it. The pros of the phone outways the cons. Pretty sure Im just gonna stick with the Att HOX.

What's up One X peeps? I am currently with Sprint on a Galaxy S2 in the Bristol, Tn area. Not so great of service and it is only 3g coverage for Sprint here so far(no plans in the future to add LTE here as far as I know...which is stupid because the race track is sponsored by Sprint and yet they have the worst service in the area duhuh..)...aaanyway, I am considering AT&T because I can pay a little extra and have 4g almost anywhere I go in the Tri Cities. So I am torn between the S3 and the One X. I have had Sense phones and touchwiz phones so I am really asking if anyone would care to share what they love about their One X and why they chose it over the S3. They are both remarkable but I am honestly leaning toward the One X because it is different in an appealing kind of way. I am just an average user other than rooting every phone I get my hands on. Browsing, texting, listening to music with headphones, email, etc. I had a Nexus S 4G before the S2 and a Hero before that. I have loved all of my phones but I kind of want something different right now. It also helps that the One X is on sale for $99 until September.

Funny you mentioned the race track, I'm right by Pocono and there is no lte either lol, oh wait there's no service at all by the SPRINT sponsored race track! Lolol. So glad I'm on att now

DO IT. I was with Sprint for 5 years, and ever since they got the iPhone my 3G speeds were simply atrocious. How good is having unlimited data when you're pulling 0.5mbps down(on a good day)? And I'm in a network vision completed area! The difference really is night and day, and so damn worth it.
Also, battery life on the One X with LTE is better than my EVO 4G, EVO 3D and Galaxy Nexus ever had on 3G... TIMES TWO. I've left my phone unplugged for eight hours when going to bed, to wake up and find out it only used 2% battery. ON LTE.
There really is no contest here. It's even worth paying an ETF. I sold my (mint condition) Galaxy Nexus on ebay for $350 and paid my ETF with that.

I was a Sprint customer for a decade and finally got fed up with their data speeds. What's the point of unlimited data if you can't even use it? After a brief trial with Verizon, I made the move to AT&T in January and couldn't be happier. The HOX is an absolute beast of a phone and coupled with AT&T's blazing LTE speeds (and even their fast-enough HSPA+ when LTE isn't available) it's pretty much unstoppable. I had heard horror stories about AT&T's customer service before coming over here but my experience with them has been nothing but positive, and I have tested the patience of more than a handful of AT&T reps since making the move. They are friendly, somewhat knowledgeable, they do try to help as best they can, and best of all- they are incredibly easy to manipulate. Do it man, you'll be glad you did.

The main reason I left sprint was due to the horrible 3G speeds. You know how bad it feels to see buffering every 5 seconds on sprint watching youtube? The slowest speed I've got on ATT was 6mbps, thats more than enough for anything I need to do. Sprint, I was barely able to do 0.5mpbs with full bars, pathetic.
Good bye Sprint, You won't ever see me again. I'm paying $10 more a month, but its we'll worth it.

Yeah, I am thinking it is going to be worth the transfer. It doesnt seem too crazy to get root and unlock the bootloader from what I have read so I am sure I can manage. The only work arpund I will have to find is the storage but dropbox is offering the 25gb space still if I am not mistaken.

The latest firmware version (2.20) is not currently rootable, although its being worked on. No root also means no bootloader unlock. It seems that based on reports here, a lot of newly purchased One X's have 2.20 pre-installed. Maybe you can find a store with some older stock (1.73 and 1.85 are okay). But if you need root and unlocked BL right now, be aware when buying.
Also, I think AT&T stopped supporting the Dropbox promotion a while ago.

I'd recommend the secondary market vs buying a new one at this point.

Att gave me a $175 trade on my Epic 4G touch when I came from sprint a month ago...best decision I made in a long time.

come on over! I honestly don't know how people put up with Sprint's data speeds. Also, I don't have any complaints with AT&T except I'm patiently waiting for LTE in Denver (HSPA+ is good enough, but why put up with "good enough" ). I've been with the company since their Cingular days and won't be going anywhere for a while (unless I jump over to Straight Talk to save some $$)

The S3 has better hardware specs but the HOX is better looking.
Basically it comes down to sd card/more ram/removable battery vs better screen and build quality.
IMO the S3 is ugly as sin, with a dated, pedestrian design (seriously, a physical home button?). But some people like it.
If you're a power user you may be better off with the S3 because of the better multitasking (more ram) and storage space. If looks and design matter to you, go with the HOX.
I came from iOS, so the sd card slot and battery were not really a big deal, while the design was.
AT&T's coverage is not as big as Verizon's but the data speeds are nice. Their customer service has always been pretty good on most issues (exceptions being the various things they like to lock down--but Verizon has always been far worse about that anyway).

U know how ppl who have sprint deal with the horrid speeds? by never experiencing good speeds..lol..I've never saw over a mb/s unless on my airave or WiFi....I don't even attempt doing stuff when I'm out and about that requires more than minimal bandwidth..but I'm in the early 2nd round of network vision so hopefully that will change ..if 6mb/s is slow for you then I'm jealous..can't imagine u need much more than that for anything..YouTube app still buffers for me on WiFi when playing hd content..and its 20 down..anyone else have that issue ?

What does "buffers" mean?

The LTE service that I get is so fast, there is ZERO difference from WiFi, and can even be faster in some cases. When I start watching a video on youtube and switch to HD, it starts playing immediately. I can't even begin to explain how much faster it is compared to even Sprint's solid WiMAX service here in Boston.
Speaking of WiMAX, LTE on AT&T runs at 700mhz, so LTE signals penetrate buildings even better than 3G and voice if you can believe it. I remember with WiMAX my signal would drop if I stepped over a shadow.
And while I've seen bursts of up to 60mbps(I kid you not), It's the insanely low ping times(about 30ms) that make you feel like you're using WiFi.

I think I will go for it. It will cost probably $10-20 mpre a month because pf the discpunt I get with Sprint through my bank...but again, I am tired of waiting for service and having to constantly roam with roamcontrol just to make a phone call in my apartment. I will try to get time to give more thanks later. I believe I talked myself into it earlier today. Design and feel mean a lot to me. And if those Apple fanbois are happy with no removable battery or sd card then I can manage too lol. Thank you all for your input!
