Brown splotch top left corner

So I recently replaced my headphone jack and speaker recently using parts I ordered from Parts Universe b/c my headphone jack stopped working after I had dropped my Captivate face down on my asphalt driveway...
Anyways, my headphone jack works great now. Only problem... about a day after I had replaced the headphone jack I noticed a dark brownish/orange splotch in the top left corner of my screen that comes down about 1/2" from the top of the screen and then back up to the top of the screen.
Did I mess something up when changing out my parts? I have taken the phone apart before just to see if I could do it, and nothing happened... I never ran into any problems when taking it apart/putting it back together... Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?
I have attached a screenshot of my homescreen with some editing in Paint to show what it looks like. It is transparent, almost like the screen is half-dead in that area.

Here it is. It also seems to be spreading... was not like this a couple of days ago...

I was going to pass this up because I couldn't tell what was added in Paint and what's wrong, but thought I'd tell you that. How about an unmodified screenshot?
Also did you solder the new connector on with the board in the phone, getting the screen hot in that area?

Well I would post an unmodified screen shot if the defect was shown in it. But it's basically what I drew in, the area outlined in orange is the border of the splotch. It's like if you have a damaged monitor, but take a screenshot of your desktop it won't show that the monitor is damaged, it will only show what the desktop looks like normally.
There was no soldering involved in replacing the headphone jack and front speaker. I just stuck it in there and plugged it into the motherboard. That's why this is so puzzling... Just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar problem?
Maybe I should try and re-install my defective headphone jack and see if the problem still persists...

Sounds like your problem right there. To me, it sounds like your screen is physically borked (i.e. you need a new screen), but I'm not knowledgeable enough to say that is the case for sure. It might be helpful if you can grab a camera and upload a few pictures, both with the screen on and off, so we can better see what's happening.

I will try to take a photo using another camera for sure...
Although I dropped my phone over two months ago and the screen was perfectly fine after (I did have a silicone case on it, so the extra width saved the screen), not a single scratch. This splotch came into existence after I replaced my headphone jack this week.

Just another guess - it's possible that the screen separated partially from the gorilla glass covering it. That opening could be causing the brown splotch you're seeing - almost like a bubble in between a screen protector and the screen.

could it possibly be a thumb-print inside the screen? In taking it apart did you ever come in contact with the backside of the screen. The oils from your skin can heat up under there and cause the discoloration.

That does sound possible... I will take it apart again tonight and give it a thorough inspection.
It's really not that bad, only b/c it's in the corner, but it does really bother me. It looks terrible on anything with a white background though, like when you browse the internet or some parts of the marketplace.

So I took everything apart last night again, replaced my new headphone jack with the old part and the splotch is still there... so it's not the replacement part I got.
All of the components look good, there's no dust or dirt anywhere, nothing rattles when I shake it... I don't know what could have happened...
I don't think I'm going to be buying a new screen for it, they run about $150 and for that price, I might as well get a new phone.
I'll just have to deal with it.

Try to have it replaced for free. It's a knowed phenomenon in electronics of all kind. Your replacement of the headjack might have just exacerbate a existing problem.

Hmm... thanks for the info.
I will have to call up Samsung and see what they say. Only problem is that I have the AT&T version of the phone and using it in Canada.
Hopefully Samsung is nice enough to still honour the warranty.

how did you obtain this captivate? if you are not the original purchaser you do not have a warranty. and also if you are sim unlocked you had to root to do that which voids the warranty so before you send it to sammy relock the sim restrictions and odin one click back to stock

Ok, so how do I fix it? Nothing looks loose or out of place to me. Everything fits snug and is screwed in, not loose or too tight.
Maybe just the way I snapped the outer plastic shell to the digitizer? Last time I put it together I snapped it in from top to bottom. Maybe I should try bottom to top?

If it is layer separation, I don't think there is a way to fix it. I believe the two layers are most likely put together with a special adhesive by machine. The discoloration is probably the adhesive being exposed to elements that it was not designed to come in contact with. I suspect this would have happened regardless of your activities, unless you inadvertently pried away the corner of the glass in your maintenance.
If you didn't break any "do not remove" seals while you were working on it, you may be able to get it repaired under warranty as a factory defect...

Yep. That's not going back together. Most likely it's from flexing a corner out to hard. Fixing it would require 3M Vikuiti type material. Well, that's from LCD backing. Maybe a polorizor for the front. Take it all apart, clean the surfaces in a cleanroom. That kinda thing. Not fun.

Lifting Screen?

Anyone else have the problem of the screen lifting?
I have only had the phone a few weeks, never dropped it.

I read a post that a high capacity battery, which is slightly larger, can force this to happen. Are you using the standard battery or a replacement high capacity one?

Standard battery.
I even tried keeping the screen and case clamped together over night. (very carefully obviously!)
It stayed normal slightly longer than when you just press it, but did still rise back up.

Got the exact same problem, also never dropped, and tried the exact same solution.
It's not that the case is bent, so it must be the screen flexing and lifting from the band of adhesive that holds it in. My worry is that it will get worse. I can even insert a slip of paper between the frame and the screen on one side, for about a quarter of the length on the right hand side towards the bottom (so 5 O clock if it was a clock face.) But the actual corner I can't get a slip of paper under, so the problem on mine is more the latter part of the lower side of the screen on the right.
I'm often tempted to lift it more and try to put in a tiny blob of glue or to try to smuggle glue in using a bit of paper as a delivery method, but my fear is a) smears and b) that releasing the screen any more than is necessary in order to get glue in will cause the adhesive to fail more - and the glue might not work anyways. Superglue is a no-no by the way, it'd be more something like UHU or Bostik.
But if it gets worse... Let me know if you're brave enough to try.

I've not contacted HTC to ask for a swap - this phone is a swap and I just don't fancy the rigmarole again. But you might ask them.

I have seen other thread on XDA with other devices that have done this.
I mean the buttons and everything works perfectly, seems daft to send it back for this, but then it IS a fault.
I did wonder if it was a heat issue? I have noticed that when you play a game on it for a while, holding it it does get warm...does this make the adhesive soft and flex??

One possible thing that makes the glue not so strong is high temperature. I have 2 Sensations before Desire S, and i was disapointed from that phone because of the poor glue quality on the display. In the first one i have dust under digitizer and display and the second one have the same problem as your Desire S. The only way to fix this is to open the phone, remove the digitizer with display (without separate them), buy 2mm 3M Sticker and put new sticker on the places that are not fitting good. It is not so hard but if you want to do that you need to be VERU CAREFUL with the display because it's very thin and you can broke it. On Youtube you can find few dissembling video for desire s. Good luck!!

The right side of the bottom of the display is worse than the left side, but the left side has a 0.2mm gap between the screen and the casing, right where the USB port is (only visible when the battery cover is removed and light is shining through the back) (I also believe the creaking case comes from near this area).
Once again, it used to frustrate me to all hell seeing it, but I've learned to live with it.

You are all making me tempted to get the UHU out

Mine is the same.
But i have noticed it since it came out from the box...

Thankfully I've not experienced this problem, but I will throw a couple of ideas into the pot for interest:
(1) If I remember correctly, applying heat is part of the official method for removing the glass screen from the body during the repair process. This suggests that the DS may be much more vulnerable when hot.
(2) Don't even think of using superglue (cyanoacrylate) for glueing the glass back. This stuff seems to have a volatile component that can mist up displays or windows some distance away (as I previously discovered to my cost on another project).

I also suffer from this symptom, and have done out of the box. I've noticed that if you rub from the body onto the glass on the top of the phone it's flush, whereas on the bottom there is a definite rise on the glass. I can also push the glass down on the bottom corners. But they always rise up again instantly. I'd be surprised if this wasn't the case with every desire s.

Had the same issue since day one, in April, only that with me it was the lower right corner, not as dramatic as the one in the picture though. Also had a gap between the screen gasket and the body of the frame (one could stick a thick sheet of paper through);
I sent the phone to the warranty center and got it back a few days later with a crappy statement that the manufactury/ assembly issues i reported are not considered faults...
So i sealed the gap with fine black silicone paste (just a tricle) and learned to live with the risen screen corner.
After discovering the faults with my phone I checked with other handsets at every dealer I came across and guess what? about 1/3 of the terminals examined with my now "expert" eye have one or several of the issues mentioned in this thread.
I think the phone was rushed into production and somebody screwed big time in the Quality Control department before it was released for mass production.
So you can complain to the HTC call-center and try to have the handset replaced. If you get a replacement, so much the better. Good luck!

Interesting to hear so many people suffering from it.
May just learn to live with it as it does sound like a common fault, and sending it back may be a waste of time!

The issue for me is if it gets worse as I know it wasn't there originally (having read a post about it and checked my phone carefully.) Four months later....

Part of me doesn't want the faff of sending it back...

Ok so I am not alone on this. Had the same issue but not to the extent in the pics attached, mine was a little loose on the bottom right corner, if pressed made a creaking/squeaking sound, if kept pressed for a few seconds, would get fixed for a few hours.
How I inadvertently fixed it is by forgetting my phone in direct sunlight for a good 30-40 mins, must have been 35-40 Celsius out around 2 PM. When I remembered and retrieved my phone from my terrace it was considerably hot, just turned it on to check if the phone was alright, must have pressed down due to force of habit but I think the glue stuck for good that time.
Never squeaked since then.
By no means is this a way to fix your phone but it worked for me by chance.

Don't think it's a good idea. Try getting HTC to do something about it, if they could take it off and reapply the screen with the required adhesive.

Earlier today I left it by my laptop fan and it got very hot, held the screen down after and it did stick back for longer, but did creep up again... luckily the heat didn't damage my done I may email o2 as there support is better than htc's! They replaced my screen in my old HD2 last year no problems.

Build Quality

Hi, I recently got a TF300 and so far I love it (for the most part). I am still on the stock ROM and am thinking of rooting and going custom soon, I just cant be bothered with the backup and restore really.
What I'd like to know is if the build quality on everyone's tab is the same.
I have a blue one, with the keyboard dock and I bought from Comet in the UK.
When I use the pad un-docked, there is a noticeable creakyness to the edges of the bezel. On the right side of the screen, and the bottom - just where the dock alignment arrow is, i feel as if I can push the edges up and down like a sponge. Its almost as if the screws arent tightened enough to hold it together properly. It is not a major issue, but it does really bug me because I paid £400 for this gadget.
I also notice that there is a dip in the keyboard, around the letters JKL.
Please tell me if other people have the same thing or if I'm the only one, because if that is the case i'd feel inclined to return and exchange it.

Confirming the creakyness on the bottom edge, near the usb port. Not quite like a sponge, but it's noticeable during regular use. Also, if you look really carefully you can see between the black bezel and the silver margin, right under the dock arrow. It doesn't seem worth it to return the tablet over something like this, but it's a little bit disappointing at this price range.

I can confirm this, mine has had the same creakyness. Only mine had it on the top and left side. It annoyed me alot. What i eventually did to fix it might not be for everyone though. I took of the back-cover and used some household masking-tape in very thin slices around the areas on the edges inside of the back.cover. No more creakyness
But I have also read about some people turning theirs inn and getting a new one without the creaky back-cover.

I was also slightly disappointed that there is some creaky movement on the casing of my TF300T. It almost feels like I could pop the back off at the top right corner.

I don't feel any creakyness. It must be my girlie arms. No offense to girls.

I certainly can feel the creekyness between the back plate and the screen. It turns out, the back plate is EASILY removable and is only held on by a few clips, no screws. You can actually take it off without voiding your warantee , the void sticker is on a sheet of copper beneath the back plate over the cpu, nand chip etc.
I actually made an aluminum plate for mine, at a machine shop I work at.
I think the flimsyness is a result of using plastic for the back plate. I expect some time soon to see some manufacturers start selling decent metal plates for the tablet. Overall I am pleased with the build quality though. If your corners seem especially loose try gently squeezing them against the back plate. They might be slightly popped out.

Is there any tutorial that shows how to take off the back plate? If so, are there any screws under there that hold on the front of the tablet? It just feels as if a couple of screws might be loose that need tightened up... kinda like what ppl were complaining about on the Nexus 7... and ppl managed to find a way to tighten them up!

The white one i settled for is perfect.
All of the above were C5O... serial

I thought this creakyness was a bit of exaggeration but it is definitely there. I have another cheap tablet and it does not feel like this... also the widescreen format makes me feel the screen is too narrow when reading in portrait mode. Kind of having buyer's remorse.

Hmm yeah that is strange... unfortunately the store I bought it from only sells a blue one, and if I were to return it now I would only get a gift card as it's outside the 14 day refund period.
I would want to return it really, I am really happy with the tablet on the whole, its just a little disappointing when you undock it and hold it in your hand, the edges of the screen dont feel solid and sturdy, its kinda like what people have been complaining about with the screen popping issues on the nexus 7.
If I were to open the backplate and tighten up all the screws around the edge would this help any?
btw, mine is C6O serial number

Mine is white, and I have that creakiness. But I don't regret it, this tablet is awesome!

I cant be bothered returning it if I am just going to get the same thing again on an exchange.

Sure, here's a picture of the top of the back-cover. You kinda have to feel around the corners of your device to see where you need to "fill" inn with some masking-tape so it stops moving. Also take note of where the plastic clips that holds it to the screen is, so you dont block them.

Any tape will do really, I just used masking-tape because it's very thin and very easy to take off if it didn't work or if I used too much. It takes very little tape to make a difference.

Hey, finally got round to doing this today, and what a difference! No more creaks!
I just used brown parcel tape as thats all I had laying around, and just doubled it up in the areas that were the worst, as its very thin. All in all im very impressed. Maybe Asus should have thought of this before it left the factory! lol

My New Z3 experience

Just got mine from Sony Store.. and yeah it's not perfect, at first it annoyed me like hell, because as you notice, there are some gaps and faults due to poor build quality. But everything is not perfect, and those gaps are just minor. Luckily the phone has no problem so far, but I still worry, will there be anything to concern in the future? like after using the phone for a few weeks, the camera will become worse or anything like that? pls share your experience, guys

Luckily the phone has no problem so far, but I still worry, will there be anything to concern in the future? like after using the phone for a few weeks, the camera will become worse or anything like that? pls share your experience, guys

What am I looking at? What's the problem? Are you asking if your phone is going to fail at some point in the future. Almost certainly, just like it is the destiny of the human race - of every race and species - to become extinct. And at some point after that, the sun will expand and burn up all that ever was (except the voyager craft, which will escape intact, and I just regret now that the gold record they stuck on it in the 1970's couldn't have included Rick Astley because the idea of rickrolling some alien civilisation 20 million years from now arouses me). Until then, I'd try not to let it worry you.

Nothing to worry about that I can see. Have had mine for two months and it looks just like yours, no issues.

Nice, you got one with even gaps so that's good. Just make sure you get a case or protector for the back, I love the phone but the back glass is pretty soft I have some minor scratches near the bottom edge despite being careful.

What do you mean by "gaps" and "good"? 0.O

On many phones the screen is uncentered so there is almost no gap between LCD and frame on one side and a big gap on the other, yours is good. Mine is like yours. For those who have it, its just a cosmetic thing.

Looking at the contents sticker showing no earphones I am guessing you got it from TMO?

My current one is a week 39. I will post pictures here tonight or tomorrow.
I have gone through 3, because T-Mobile got a bad batch:
1. had evenly set/centered screen but light bleed
2. had uncentered screen and back glass so big gap on one side
3. had uncentered screen and back glass so big gap on one side and purple camera on sided of pics, and light bleed all along one side. (Week 40)
4. Current phone, everything is perfect (Week 39)

No, tmo has a different bix

My first one was bought on amazon 6603 and it came eith seals open already which made me uncomfortable but the phone worked flawless but one of the nylon corners protruded out just the slightest not even 1mm off but it bothered me so i returned it it was production week 41 so i bought one on sony store and am happy to report not a single flaw , my new one is productiob week 44

Yeah that happened to my third one the, nylon cap on one side was literally cutting me because it was protruding out a little.

Yes it happened to me as well. I was too lazy to take a shot of that corner. It was bulged out a little bit, but only if you look very closely. One thing I'm afraid is that will those gaps on the edge (or the ugly corner we have) let water get in?

There is glue under the glass and the frame actually extends inwards a bit. Don't worry about gaps unless you see a lot of light coming through between the frame.

Thank you, that helped a lot. Actually I have tried "washing" it twice, but only 30s or less, so not sure if it's defective.

Just curious why you chose the one for 80 when there are ones for 59 to 69?

Because the others I looked at did not have speaker grills.

I'm thinking to change mine from service center because of yellow tint.

I've replaced the screen twice ,added pogo pins to the second sim slot which I broke out (its just glued in) turning my xt1575 into a xt1572 using chinese dual sim software (works better than FI) I like using Verizon and Tmobile at the same time in the US, I literally have service everywhere, I';m only using a Verizon Tablet Sim cause I have many other SIP numbers linked in. I live in Colorado and need a **** load of numbers.
Its really easy to change the screen, I strongly suggest spending a few extra bucks and get one thats already on its frame or GOOD LUCK GETTTING THE OLD ONE ON THE NEW FRAME, YOU JUST WASTED BUCKS IT IS LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE. YOU MUST GET THE VERSION WITH THE FRAME OR YOu will be attempting to remove your old frame, clean it, and pray you line everytrhing up right (and it takes about 5 hours longer with a heat gun) I can change a screen with frame (the speaker grills pop off and pop onto the new one you must pull out straight and push in dead straight. I promise this, did it twice.
The hardest thing is getting all the little screws back in without torquing the screen and making little light colored spots, took me many hours the first time of adjustment to get it right and it didn't last.
Itrs been a pretty good phone but it is no droid x. its chinese as hell. I dropped a sledgehammer on my droid x., tore out half the aluminum frame but left Gorilla Glass one perfect (Gorilla Glass has only gotten ****tier) plus a rounded screen is downright stupid. I dropeed it on a empty pill bottle one time, another time it was just broken creen facing in in my pocket. It is no American phone, its Legend all the way.
Still good phone, still extrodinarily hackable if you get the **** away from android its basically a shark running debian with the antennas I've soldered onto it now running my scanners. Check previous posts to se where I soldered, I gained (lost) 10 points rssi on 2.4 all around bluetooth goes forever and 5G well, its fast. I noticed having more bluetooths and wifis in range made my location accuracy jump. I don't like that/.

I've changed the screen also after dropping it.
And I would also suggest to get the version with the frame.
I have 2 little spots on the left upper side and right bottom side but they aren't anoying.
I was happy that my screen was working.

And opening the phone was a peace of cake, only you need to look you really got all the screws out. i almost forgot the one that was mounted on the Motherboard.
Also popping out the speaker grills is easy peasy work.

I'm looking for one from EU so I avoid paying import taxes but I think I'll have to order one from outside of EU. BTW do you notice any difference in the display quality?

I do not believe that the one that you are showing the link to has the frame, it doesn't say it has the frame in the description and if you look at the picture and look at the top of the screen where the speaker grill would go, if it had the frame you would not be able to see through to the white background, it would have the black frame to hold the speaker grill and you would not see the white background.

Did you ever figure out a reliable trick for this? My kid cracked my screen this week, so I picked up the replacement screen/digitizer/frame from fixez.com. It swapped out easy enough, but the only way I can get the light bleed to go away is to back the nearby screws off to the point where I can easily get my fingernail in the gap between the front and middle pieces of the frame (i.e. a no-go).
I've got an email out to fixez.com to get their input. It seems to me that you should be able to put the screws in till they're tight (not wrenching them down, but snug) without worrying about distorting the screen.

I had a similar issue with my replacement screen and it turned out that the screws were too tight
After loosing them a little the bright spot went away. I will try that before ordering a second screen

As a new user, what all do I need to worry about with this phone's display? Are there very common issues where I'm likely going to need to replace this screen? I'm not looking to keep this phone for longer than a year. It's just serving as my daily driver until the next Samsung Note device is released (and proven not to blow up). Thanks.

Keep a good case on it and try not to drop it or bang the screen too much. The screen is more susceptible to cracking from drops due to the curvature and prominence of the glass from the frame. A face down or side drop means the glass is more likely to take the impact directly vs another phone in which the screen is flush with the frame. As far as defective screens (I.e. color or pixel issues) I don't think it is any more prominent than any other brand. However, of you have have submitted for and received an unlock code for your bootloader, your warranty is void, and Motorola will most likely deny any warranty claim.
