any way to make calls on xoom using network - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any way to do this? I've only got SMS and mms working using mod but wanted to make calls using my simcard in the xoom

Look into groove IP and Google voice....

Glock stole my thunder. Groove IP and Google Voice works like a charm.

What about just actually making calls using my sim card without data on the mobile network itself

i would like to know this as well

I had it working from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21812012 the patch here...tho it kinda made the system unstable ...when id open phone (the dial pad? It would always force close....also the speakers & mic arent active so may be you could try ur luck with a bluetooth headset !

Do you mean calling off wifi as opposed to using a 3g or 4g network? If so, then yes you can with groove ip. I have the mz602 without mobile data enabled, and am able to call people off my google contacts with my tablet. To disable mobile data I believe you just swap your tablet to airplane mode. I havent been able to recieve calls but, from what I understand, that is just a matter of changing the settings and enabling google chat.... it is somewhere in the forums, another thing in my list of things to do
Hope this helps

[Q] Would my theory work?

Okay, say I bought a galaxy s2 skyrocket without a plan. Then I rooted it and downloaded a wireless tether app to make my phone a wireless hotspot. I then downloaded a VoIp app like (textPlus).
What I'm wondering is will I be able to talk anywhere like a regular cell phone but without the charge? Because the VoIp app needs internet to receive/send calls and texts. And the wireless tether will provide that. So yeah, I'm just wondering if its possible to make it a phone without call/texting/data charges.
Thank you.

Oh damn. Haha well okay thanks.
When you say tether....
Dont you mean just turn on the Wifi - therefore using it on a WiFi connection?
THAT should work - in theory.

Well I meant to activate the wireless hotspot device in the phone. Thus allowing you to use internet anywhere and letting you use the VoIp app (textPlus) anywhere.
The wireless hotspot uses the cell service for the internet connection. So if the phone is not activated then no it won't work. You could use the voip to make calls when you have access to someones wifi or using an open connection by wardriving.

When you activate wifi tether the phone needs to be activated because cell service is used for the data connection. So the answer is no.

Oh okay I see. Thank you
google voice over 4g data
Search on play store for GrooVe IP. It is a paid ($5) app that claims to route google voice calls over the phones data connection.

[Q] Wifi Calling Issues

I am having an issue with wifi calling on a my One S. For background info I am using a completely stock rom, I am rooted and I have only removed non t-mobile related apps like where's my water and movie editor.
My issue is this, I have wifi calling disabled in settings and yet every time I connect to a wifi hotspot whether at home or anywhere else it attempts to use wifi calling. when it does this I lose all cellular signal and can no longer receive/send calls and texts. I have tried factory resetting the phone as well as calling t-mobile. I was on the phone with them for about 2 hours or so last night and still no fix. Just curious as to what I should do to fix this issue or would it be easier to just get an exchange on the phone.
I have also tried setting up wifi calling but at the same time I would prefer to use my phone connection for calls due to irregularity in hotspots i connect to, hence the reason I have it disabled altogether.
Any help is appreciated
Try setting wifi calling to cellular preferred
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
Yeah that doesnt seem to help either. I am just about to take phone back and try another. I hate not being able to use my phone my WiFi. No matter what setting I use I can't seem to send or receive any calls or texts. The instant my WiFi connects I get a big X on my cell signal indicator.

This problem is stupid but is easy to fix. Whenever you finished using wifi calling feature, the phone's radio is auto-turn off. That why you can't call or send text message. Open dialer pad, type *#*#4636#*#* ==> phone information => turn on radio. I believe this is a bug because i never have this problem before when i used htc sensation, mytouch 4g

Groove ip question

So i have groove ip set up on my phone .but i noticed using it is still wasting my minutes in my plan . So question is whats the right setup to get the free calling thing
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
You must have the settings wrong. I call through the internet when i was in Mexico. It doesn't use your minutes when you have no signal. You have to make sure your calling with Groove IP and not through the phone. I just tested it in airplane mode with wifi on and made a call, checked my actual phones history no call showing. If anything your using data.

Download MMS over wifi

Is it possible to download MMS when mobile data is off and Wi-Fi is on? Everything I've read says not possible, is it a greedy carrier thing to use mobile data? Manufacturer? Android? I could have sworn I used to do it fine on HTC phones or Motorola's. I don't get any notifications about MMS of Wi-Fi is the only one turned on. Can we change it with a different ROM?
Sent from the Matrix
No it's strictly data. Think of it this way, texts are sent through your data signal and service so in order to receive that picture you download it through your data which uses that signal to retrieve it. Idk if I make sense but this is what I've been told.

Hmmm thanks. I wonder why i don't get notifications for it though

Try using the "textplus" app in playstore. You can send mms/text and even call voip via wifi connection.

The Verizon Message App didn't fix the phone to allow you to download pictures sent via text over wifi... Still have to turn off Wifi and turn on Mobile Data in order to get the pictures. I think this sucks as I just switched to Verizon from Sprint less than a week ago and with Sprint you could get those pictures on wifi or mobile data. Its just a ploy to make you use more data and there has to be a way around it as it is Carrier Specific and NOT Phone Specific...
I use the vzw msg app with avail data, and the textplus app via wifi. Working for me so far.

Doesn't appear to be as you describe it -- I've been struggling to get MMS picture messages through (from my Galaxy Nexus / toro / VzW) when the phone is also connected to WiFi. Digging pretty deep into the issue (a few people still working on it), it appears to actually be a bug (google this for a lot of eye-burning reading ). Anyway - taking a break from the detective work trying to figure out how to make it work, I installed Verizon Messaging on both my Galaxy Nexus and my Nexus 10, which - as you can imagine - has NO cellular connection. I'm also in my home office at the moment, in a finished basement with incredibly poor VzW network connectivity. After failing at being able to send/receive a picture MMS for the last few hours, installing Verizon Messaging seems to have done the trick: I can now easily send / receive picture MMS from the phone while it's connected to WiFi with barely any usable VzW network signal.

As long as both are on it will work. MMS goes through a Verizon data only server. That it what the problem is.
personaly, i don't get it. how hard would it be to have a 3rd party intercept an MMS and send the attactment via email thereby sending it via WIFI?

simultaneous data and voice?

Hi,
I've noticed that my data is cut off when I make a regular cellular phone call. Is that normal?
I use sim1 for phone calls, and sim2 for data, so I had expected that I could use them both at the same time. It's a little annoying because I use my cell data for an internet connection.
Does it depend on the type of connection? I think they are both 4G most of the time...when I'm a phone call on sim1, sim2 puts up a little hour glass next to the signal meter...I've not seen that before.
I'm assuming you've setup both sims correctly for their required purposes? A good read about it here.

Thanks for that!
I think I had set it up that way earlier, but have been fiddling to try to get it to work and had disabled one or two of those things.
In any case, I have now enabled them, but it still doesn't work - ie, if I make a call using one sim, the other one gets a small 'hour glass' next to it and the things using it for an internet connection get disconnected.
I wonder if there's a way to completely disable 'voice' for the sim I'm using for data only?
