use as a go phone - Captivate General

So my 78yr old dad buys a cheap flip go phone because it has unlimited text. He has decided it is a pita to use and wants a different phone. Will my old captivate work with his go phone sim, are there any apn settings I may need to change if so since he will only be using it for calls and text no mms or data or will disabling the apn be good enough?
In case anyone cares and wished to do the same here was my resolution,
I learned that the SIM card in the gophone was locked to that IMEI, what I did was call customer support and politely explain to her that I had bought a cheap gophone and dropped it in the water I told her that it was able to power up but not do much else. I told her that I had a captivate smartphone given to me and I would like to use it. She asked me for the IMEI of the captivate and then proceeded to SIM unlock the cheap gophone. The captivate picked up a great signal and my Dad is happy. Oh FWIW I installed CM7 on it before I gave it to him. He needed it to be as dumbed down as possible.

weird problem with at&t internet after using iphone

hey guys, i bought an iphone online from at&t (to sell) and just got it. stuck my sim in there and it "activated". played around with it a little, than put my sim back in my fuze, and the internet wouldnt work! after multiple soft resets i played around with the settings and saw that the address is now ims.cingular. i changed it back to wap.cingular and everything is perfect now. however, it goes back to ims.cingular after each soft reset. what gives?
nobody knows? this is real annoying... ive never even heard of ims.cingular...
hey my guess is to call att and remove the iphone plan because it is differnt from other att plans
thanks, but i never added the iphone plan; i still have the $15 medianet plan
ims.cingular is the APN for Video Share, if you have enabled the video share service on the phone it will use this APN as it must be parked on it to receive video share calls.
On ATT's side, one of their systems thinks you're still using an iphone. This happens a lot. Call an ATT rep and get to technical support, they should be able to fill out a case which'll get it fixed in a jiff.
See what happens when you do unprotected sim swapping with dirty iphones? You catch diseases!

AT&T requires a data plan on Fuze

Hey guys, I need to cancel my data plan on my account with AT&T, and the rep told me b/c it's a smart phone it requires a data plan with it.
I installed that one program that disables network connections so no data is transferred at all, but I'd still be paying the $30/month.
Does anyone know of a program to blind the IDMI or w/e number so that AT&T doesn't know what phone I'm using? I mean, yea I can just put my SIM in another phone and use that and cancel the plan just fine. I'd LIKE to continue using the fuze as a normal phone b/c it has wifi and is an all-around better phone than say a moto razor. This way I can call from a razor, cancel the plan, and put the SIM back in the Fuze and according to my account online it won't know I've switched back to the Fuze.
Ideas? Thanks.
tell the rep that he/she is a liar and a jerk. You can remove your dataplan. the only phone out there that requires you to have a dataplan is the iphone. get yourself a rep that actually knows what they're talking about.
Last time they told my gf that her only option for txt mssging is to pay for the unlimited and i kept telling her you can get 200 for $5 and the rep says no, I told her to get another rep and that rep set it up for her.
You actually do need a data plan for any smartphone, if you upgrade to another smart phone theres no way to get out of paying $30 for data

I have to agree with mputtr. Keep trying until you get a rep that will do it for you. By the way, I've upgraded twice over the past 3 1/2 years with ATT smartphones, and I was never required to get a data plan. I still don't have one to this day.

Not true anymore, since September 6, it's now AT&T policy that every smartphone requires the $30 data plan, not just the iphone (BBs included). The only way to get out of this is if you had a smartphone BEFORE that date and either didn't have a data plan or had a cheaper one and therefore you're grandfathered in. You could try to find a rep to do it for you, and even in the rare case you do find one, once AT&T matches your IMEI, they're gonna put the data plan back on and possibly charge you for trying to circumvent the policy.

He's right. Though, how long do you think it will take for them to match up the IMEI's? Because I've switched my SIM through several Winmo phones (shh, off the record) and never been asked about it.
I'm hoping AT&T will be lazy because I really don't like this idea

Yeah, it's either hit or miss I guess. At times my Fuze will go unnoticed after using a dumbphone, and then all of a sudden it will show up in OLAM, but I've had the Medianet plan on the Fuze forever, so no worries
But from what I hear AT&T is more aggressive in searching for people, so all I can say is good luck!
I've got three phones on family data & family texting... $60 total for all three. Fuze, BJII and Samsung Eternity. I want to upgrade fuze to Tilt2 & BJII to better smartphone, but I don't want to get jacked by AT&T forcing a move to data plans. Anyone know if you can switch back thought the website once you've signed up for data plan?
I've had a Tilt forever. I need to uprade, hopefully to a HTC Pure, however already having a family plan with 5 phones, I don't need or want a data plan o top of that expense. Is there a way of using an unlocked phone to avoid the ATT Nazis? Thanks for any help. Hoping that I won't have to go back to an iPaq Pocket PC.
the only real way of doing it is after upgrading the phone wait a month or so while paying for data then put the sim in a old razr or something and go online change your IMEI and then call and say u lost the new one and have them take data off.
then just swap sims later and hope they dont notice
Here's a quick fix that always works: (I've done this many, many times)
1. Get yourself a dumbphone, i.e. non-winmo/BB/iPhone devices like those Nokia's or SE's
2. Get the IMEI# of the dumbphone ready because the rep would want to register that with your account.
3. Call the rep from the dumbphone, and tell him/her that you're NOT gonna use your smartphone anymore and that you would want the data plan to be removed.
OR
This would also be the chance for you to downgrade your data plan to the cheaper $15/mo MediaNET, most dumbphones will be eligible for that.
4. Hang up and put back the SIM card into the smartphone again, voila.
The trick is to NEVER call the rep from the smartphone as they're able to detect your IMEI from the network.
Good luck.

Android Phone on Straight Talk

Hi all I'm new here, but have spent the last several hours searching for information that would help me to make an informed purchase, of a phone that runs android and can also be used with straight talk. I understand that walmart will be selling the nexus one. for 500 + unlocked. This phone should be able to run on straight talk. But I was wondering if there were any people out there who currently have an android phone running on straight talk and which phones would be capable of doing this and how it's done?
I don't want to start a flame threat about how bad you think straight talk is.. the bottom line is right now the $45 dollar price tag is the winner in unlimited.
Thanks.
Tag for later, interested if Android phones would work. I called Straight Talk, but the girl was unfamiliar with Android & thought it was a brand rather than an OS..
XDA should have the scoop on Straight Talk, pre paid unlim for 45 is better than paying 60.00 per month...From what I can tell the Walmart/Verizon contract is for 2 years, if it works thats 2 years of savings!
A friend just switched to Straight Talk & is very happy. His bill with Cricket was about 80.00 a month with roaming, he now pays 45.00 a month with better coverage. Cricket contracts with Verizon for roaming but omits some areas. Straight Talk appears to work in all Verizon areas.
Findout in about a week the scoop on flashing a Verizon phone to Straight Talk, if it works then its time for me to switch and look for an Incredible.
I have had an htc eris on the verizon version of straight talk (there is a gsm version of straight talk). I was only able to use sms and voice, no data or mms. It was difficult. Involved a donor MEID/ESN from a true straight talk phone
straight talk
here you can get your apn settings it works awesome.

Straight Talk is Really not that Great!! Trust me
Ok so I had Straight Talk for almost two years, and they were just fine, if you didn't have to call customer service. Recently I bought the Samsung T528G touchscreen phone-not quite the android, but worked pretty similar, you did not need the $45 plan-I got it anyway thinking I would be using it alot. I had the phone for 3 months and one morning I woke up and tried to use my phone to find out that it had been permantly disconnected by the company due to over use of the internet and improperly shutting down the internet, which it totally false. They refused to turn it back on and said I could buy another phone and start over again, but why would I want to stay somewhere that could do that to me again? Anyways I not really sure how long these android phones will last because I would think that those would use to much data and they would shut everyone that got them off permantly!!
Straight Talk - Android Phone
I have been using the straight talk phone as a backup when I travel to my dad's house in the country. It works great and there is no contract with the $45 unlimited plan it works great for me. I do have the android phone from straight talk I have had the Samsung precedent (which i dropped in the ocean, ugh) and now the Huawei M865C which is much better than the Samsung I previously had from them. The problem I see from the android phone's is that they are severely limited on space some only have about 384MB. That is ridiculous after you activate it and it updates the stock programs that's all of your space you can't download anything else to the phone. This is a real problem!
I want to root the phone, but I don't think it would be a good idea since the space is so limited. They do, however, now offer Sim cards for a one-time fee of $14.99 (This is in addition to the $45 unlimited plan), which you can use in any T-mobile or AT&T phone on the straight talk network. I know someone who has an AT&T Iphone working on the Straight Talk network it's pretty cool it works like normal. The only thing is you have to get the $45 unlimited plan, which i have no qualms with. I think that is what I will do do in the next couple of weeks. I am a techie and I can't live with this limited phone even if it is android. It's a good idea and a good plan though I'll have to say I am seriously contemplating leaving Sprint for good behind this idea.
I'll write back if I find an AT&T or T-Mobile phone to switch to so everyone will know how it works.

Can I just put iPhone 4 sim in it?

I want a Samsung Infuse. Can I get an sim adapter and just swap my sim card from an iPhone 4 to the new Infuse. I have unlimited data (and don't want to mess it up) and will be buying Infuse off contract at Best Buy but want to make sure the "4G" will work.
Thanks in advance!!

um well if there is an adapter maybe but you can just get a new sim. it has nothing to do with the data plan. you wont lose unlimited data and att will grant unlimited to anyone that once owned an iphone on any smart phone. you can only lose it if you request to change it and even if you lose it they made a decision to let old iphone users get it back, there was some time it was imposible to get back but the policy changed.
I really just want to be able to swap sim cards at will. I'd rather not chance calling AT&T and having a rep lose my unlimited.
I was wondering if someone has done what I want to do successfully.

Yes. You can get an adapter off Amazon for like 99 cents + shipping. Or, if you are feeling particularly resourceful, you can do what I did and make your own adapter. You can find templates online which would probably be easier than what I did, which was to trace the shape I needed on the sim card holder (looks like a credit card) and cut out what you need with an exacto knife. Worked like a charm until my adapter came.
You will keep whatever data plan you have in place. In fact, AT&T does not care if you move your sim from phone to phone, as long as you keep paying your bill.

+1 they couldnt care less, you wont lose the plan, as that can be moved to other smartphones if you already have it. but since you need the sim for both phones the adapter makes the most sence. activating a new sim will likely deactivate the old one.
Yep, got my Infuse a few days ago and have been doing just that - using a sim adaptor with my iPhone 4 sim. Everything works fine, been switching back & forth with both phones. I also discussed it with the sales guy when buying the Infuse and he told me it was no problem.
When i got a new phone over my iPhone 3G they sales rep gave me a sim card but told me not to use and just leave the phone in airplane mode.
Also dont worry about losing data it will grandfather down to you so you should be ok
im switching from an iphone 4 to the infuse next week and would like to a link to this sim adapter on amazon if anyone could provide it please. Thanks I'm completely new to this stuff :x
you dont even need an adapter, just slide it into the right spot and it wont move, ive used the same iphone sim for the last year in 4 different phones and never had a problem.

I am using an iPhone 4 sim with my Infuse. Seems like everything is running fine. I've thought about getting a 4G sim but it doesn't seem as if I need to.

3G to 4G issue and ?

History:
Company issued BB Curve 3g
Bought my own Captivate, took SIM from BB and put into Captivate. Voice and DATA work great. Now I have a nice phone that work pays for
Yesterday I bought an Infuse, took 3g SIM from cappy and put in it. Voice calling works NO data though.
Go to AT&T cust center this morning and they replace the sim with a new 4g one. Still NO DATA. Put the new 4g sim in the cap everything works fine - in Infuse only voice but no data which means no email = can't use for work & out a lot of money.
Does anyone know a fix for this or even why it's happening ? Will rooting it fix it ?
Yes, they have to switch you to a 4g plan in the system, your features and cost will still be the same but you will have "4g data plan". I know because I had the same issue. They had to enter my imei number into the system and then make the switch. It works in the captivate because that's a 3g device.
infuse 4g "a lot a screen real estate"
Which means I'm screwed because my IT people would not authorize that to be done as I am only allowed to use a BB or Iphone. Neither do I like. They were quite pissed when I told them I removed the sim from my BB. So no way to use the new Infuse. Not going to make the wife happy considering I shelled out cash for it last night.
Just curious, did you actually check to make sure 'packet data' was enabled in wireless settings under mobile networks?
That's the probable cause, you shouldn't need to change your data plan if coming from a captivate
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
yep. Everything is checked. Its a 4g issue and my company won't authorize attaching my blackbery data plan to the iemi of the new infuse because we aren't allowed to used android devices

its not that you need a "4g plan" its some network protocol they have to change. its actually the same one that the iphone uses. the guy in the att store showed me. i was making sure they would not touch my plan. no way im getting rid of my unlimited data.

He needs the 4g plan because when they enter the imei of the infuse, the Rep can't proceed unless they select the appropriate 4g plan, trust me I spent almost 2 hrs on the phone with ATT last week before they finally figured it out. He will still have the same features he has now but they need to select "4g".
infuse 4g "a lot a screen real estate"
Yup, I had the same issue, upgrade from cappy to infuse - DATA not working with the 3G sim. I had to activate the 4G sim came with the phone - NO DATA connectivity until the att technical support had set me up for "4G plan" and IMEI should be set for that. Then got the DATA working like a breeze. All happened in 10 mins.
I've switched back and forth between an iPhone 3g, Samsung Vibrant, Motorola Atrix and the Samsung Infuse with the same sim card and I've never had any of the issues that you all are having.
I get voice, text and data flawlessly with any of the phones, without the need to change my plan. Just because you may be on a 3G plan shouldn't hinder you from being able to use data on your Infuse. Unless you've somehow come across some kind of fluke, I would start looking at something else as the problem rather than what they have your plan designated as.
I concur with everyone above. Same exact plan on the surface, so your IT guys wouldn't even know, but the plan code is different....
You actually have to own or be authorized to make plan modifications in order to even switch the plans. If its through your company, I don't think they would put you on the account as an authorized person to change plans...
BUT you can always try.... sorry....

its not so much the plan as the fact that my company won't allow the current plan to be tied to the new infuse. I'll post the email exchange I had with my company in a bit.

That be the case. So I'm stuck with the captivate which is better than my company policy of BB or Iphone only.
So if anyone would like a BRAND NEW Infuse in the box for the same $500 I bought it for last night let me know. Free shipping
