So I bought an Infuse unlocked at a certain retailer (no specific names) and got T-Mobile service. Well, to be frank, T-Mobile's data (since I can only use EDGE) sucks, so I want to go to AT&T. This shouldn't be a problem, even though my phone is unlocked, right?
BTW - I think the guy said he did the hex edit unlock instead of buying a code
Unlock means u can use it with any network in the world so u are good with it and u can use it with at&t.
Instead of going to AT&T look into strait talk. $45 and it's unlimited everything. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23799846

I just moved to NC and get absolutely **** AT&T service. I hear Verizon works best in my area, so I'm wanting to switch to Verizon but not at the cost of buying a brand new phone when I have my beloved Infuse, and the deposit.
I actually have NOT rooted my Infuse because I liked the stock so much, saw no need to. I did have a rooted Galaxy S, as well as a rooted Nook, so I'm not a complete noob.
I'm just nervous about unlocking my phone to possibly hook it up with Verizon. Can you tell me how this works? After unlocking are you sure it'll be 100% to use with Verizon?
Anything else I need to know? How's your mother doing?
I don't think the infuse will work with Verizon. Verizon uses cdma and infuse is a gsm phone. How's tmobile over there? It'll work but with slow data speeds.

Ugh, eff. This is going to suck. Tmobile is shiz, too. I was really hoping to avoid having to spend $200+ plus whatever security deposit requirements. I've been with AT&T over 5 years.
Grr.
Idk infuse maybe compatible with cdma, I've seen the option to use it in a special menu somewhere, its regularly set for cdma/gsm so it maybe able to use Verizon but I'm no developer so I'm not to sure

Plus isn't T-Mobile at&t anyway. Don't they use the same towers? I thought I heard at&t bought t-mobile

You could try switching to Credo, which uses sprint's towers and you wouldn't lose any money.
They will buy out your at&t contract if you switch to them, so you don't have to pay at&t early termination fees. If you sign their contract, you can also get the sprint sgs2 For $200 and just sell your infuse to cover that cost. So you would have to drop some money at first but get it all back.
I've been considering doing this because Credo spends their money on things like lobbying against sopa/pipa, whereas at&t is really into censoring the uses of our phones.
Edit:

If service sucks in your house, look into getting a used Microcell from Ebay or Craigslist. On principle I hate the fact I have to use my own broadband connection, buy my own device, and still have my minutes and data usage count against my monthly alottment but that's the way AT&T plays. If it's the entire area you are in then maybe a carrier change is in order.
The Samsung Infuse is a GSM phone. It does not have the capability to connect to CDMA networks (Verizon, Sprint, and any of the MVNOs using Sprint or Verizon's network).
If unlocked, you can use any SIM from another GSM carrier and make voice calls. You will also be able to use Edge (2G) data coverage from any GSM carrier.
In the US, the two largest GSM carriers are AT&T and T-Mobile. They use different 3G frequencies which means using a phone originally for AT&T on T-Mobile only allows you 2G data speeds and vice versa (in general... though some T-Mobile smartphones can use AT&T's 1900Mhz band)
Hope that helps. Unlike Europe and Asia, our phones are by and large locked to their respective carriers even if you unlock them because of the technology difference and frequency differences.

I have a Nexus S 4G (Sprint) that has a bad ESN. Long story but it was a phone I used to use as an additional line on someone else's plan and they screwed me over by lying about staying on top of the Sprint bill. Lesson learned, happy with my own plan and new phone, etc.
Anyway, can I flash this phone to Cricket (I know how to do it) and sell it? Specifically, will someone be able to use it on Cricket's network if it has a bad ESN with Sprint?
It's my understanding that the amount owed for the Sprint bill would have to be cleared up before they'd free up the phone for use on their network again... and if I could sell this phone to someone to use on Cricket's network for a hundred bones or so... I may as well.
Thanks in advance for the advice!
Yes.

Edit* I meant GSM not GMS.
OK here is my full question. I currently have a HTC EVO 4G LTE, and I am on a two (2) year contract. If I were to sell this phone and purchase an Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S III, would I be able to have that phone activated on my contract until it's over with? Is this even possible or would I just have to terminate the contract and do something else? I really want to get an unlocked phone instead of being locked into a two year contract on a terrible network. Which now I regret extending the contract I'm on now. I have never owned an unlocked phone so I really am not sure how they operate other than you can use any SIM card in it. Can you even purchase SIM cards for major network carriers here in the states?

Yes the unlocked galaxy would work, but activating it would defeat the purpose of it being unlocked. Your contract should continue as signed just by swapping your sim in your HTC into the unlocked Samsung. Think of it like if you were to break your HTC and they give you a PAYG phone to keep the sim working, only it's not a crap $100 phone it's a galaxy s3.

The reason I want to do this is cause I would rather just sell this phone and buy an Unlocked phone and not pay an ETF right away and or when my contract is up I can switch and keep the same phone.

Or just stick to prepay after your contract. It's way cheaper. I'd say transfer your contract to whoever buys the HTC and get a prepaid sim and the Samsung. There's no fees for transferring you contract. It'll take like 15 minutes at a store if you go together.

I have e-mailed Straight Talk support, and they are completely clueless about their own service. I'm sure you guys know far more.
The coverage in my area is much better with AT&T. There is hardly any T-Mobile coverage. That being said, when shopping for a phone, I need to know which phones I can use. I understand that it has to be GSM. However, when shopping for SIM cards, Straight Talk asks if it the phone is a
Unlocked Phone
AT&T Compatible Phone
T Mobile Compatible Phone
So, can I just buy any GSM phone, and then put a Straight Talk AT&T SIM in it, since that is the coverage I want, or does it have to be an AT&T phone?
You can take any GSM phone and unlock it with an unlock code. I think you can use a locked AT&T phone on ST but if it doesn't work unlock codes are $10 or less anyways...

1. It depends on the provider; some SIM cards aren't compatible with unlocked phones.
2. Please don't bump after an hour.
3. Since this is a question, it belongs in Q&A.
That 1st statement you made doesn't tell me anything that isn't true with any other phone..ever occur to you that I'm not trying to blow 70 bucks on a T-Mobile sim card ? If your going to reply than say something alittle more helpful
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
My point is, since no one else has responded and you seem concerned enough to bump so quickly, your best bet is to call or otherwise somehow ask T-Mobile itself. It will probably be more reliable than asking here, and makes more sense than just buying a $70 card and trying it. After a quick Google search I see that it has a site listing compatible unlocked phones, but this one isn't on there, and I don't know about how up-to-date it is.
Oh, well, I tried. My apologies for apparently being unhelpful. Good luck.
Edit: and by the way, you could try asking in the DHD section. It's essentially the same phone, and the forums are more populated.
as long as it does in fact sim unlock the phone then yes you should have no issues using tmobile... I got the code from ATT shortly before I canceled service... I used the $0.99 sim from tmobile prepay, I registered the sim (but didn't put any money on it) and verified I'd sim unlocked the phone before paying for the service.
I didn't root my phone till after I made the switch (I finally got brave after going though rooting and romming my wife's kindle fire)
this is where I got my sim from
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phones/prepaid-sim-cards
I'm almost done with my first month of service ($30 100min 5gb plan)... it works for me... if I run out of talk min it charges 0.10 min... the only down side is the voicemail isn't compatible with my google voice... I may well just move to the value plan (cost about 10$ more between my wife and I)
