may be because of adds from background running apps ....but 4MB is fine...with 2G ...you'll get 2GB for 2G plans....so this loss is ok
Oh no, not 4MB in an hour
It's a smartphone, it's permanently connected to the net for various reasons.

oh yeah
crosses the limit of 2 GB
Are you running ICS? I believe you can go into Settings >> Usage and see what's consuming your data plan. Also try switching off auto-sync and see whether that cuts down on your data consumption, and maybe decrease the sync frequency for your accounts. Worse come to worst, just switch off the mobile data when you're not using it. That's what I used to do when I was still stuck with my crappy HTC Tattoo with its crappy battery life.

WARNING --> WARNING you can be killing your data plan and not know it
this problem is systemic because we all have the same hardware/software
don't wait till u get a 500 dollar data over usage bill, make sure you do not
have the problem NOW
This problem appears to arise from, BUT may not be limited to …...
Skipping the initial Google account setup when you first get your phone!
The symptoms:
you connect to your WiFi but are still download and surf the web with your network connection (2G/3G or 4G)
How can u tell if you have this problem ?
Open the App market (easiest and sure way to find out)
if you have the problem right next to your WiFi you will see 2G, 3G or 4G connection
you may have to click on an app in the market and wait for the page to load to see the above
BUT u will see it if you have a data plan, if you do not have a data plan you will get a network error!
Which tells you if you think about it that u are not surfing with WiFi at all!
And hence killing (using) your data plan!
Go here if u wanna read what we went through to find the offending app's and how to solve the problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044349
the easiest solution comes from EtherealRemnant (I have his post quoted below)
for thoughs of u who can not do the original setup, because you don’t have a data plan
OR don’t want to do a factory reset! You will have to go to the above post for details on how to solve the problem.
Some are easy (and work for some) other solutions are harder and require you to take an extra step after every reboot! (as in my case)
Maybe a developer out here can make an easy one click Fix
peace and good luck

Second, make sure that your phone is not using any data before turning wifi on. If it is, let it stabilize for a few moments.
If this does not work, turn on wifi calling. Its better voice quality anyway and you don't get dropped calls.
This is obviously just a software bug that needs a patch to fix. I've seen far worse problems out of the gate with phones
than software bugs as small as this.

lol thanks bud....
i always wondered why people skipped the setup... it takes 2 mins......
now look... you might have caused your own problems... maybe this is where the REBOOTS/LAG/DATA/LOCK DEATH PROBLEMS are coming from.........

SO true maybe this is the cause of ALL them problems, I never thought of that!
BUT for myself i can not do the initial setup because i do not have a data plan to sync the account with in setup

i bet it will help with most of them (not the bleeding tho thats hardware)
Thank you for giving me credit on my fix.
I didn't really think about the people who don't have data plans - lots of us skip the initial set up on phones though due to slow network speeds. I have a lot of towers in my area but I get 100kbps on a good day and 300 off-peak... there's an air force base not even ten miles away and I have a feeling that's where a lot of it comes from... I switched from at&t to T-Mo because of the exact same speeds but I was also dropping calls in my house with them. I've yet to drop one with T-Mo.
Well I set my wife's up correctly. She still has the problem.

But it's still not working for some
my fix using his method stopped working and i am back to turning on wifi calling again ***SIGH***
i might just have to buy a day data plan and factory reset,
and set the phone up properly the first time
so i don't know whats up with this
just don't take this fix to be the end all be all fix
just be happy if it works for you

unlimited data over hrere
The real culprit is T-Mobile's very own My Account app. It won't work over Wi-Fi and starts a native data connection with the mother ship with every query even when Wi-Fi's enabled. The way to prove this is to enable Wi-Fi calling and then try to get My Account to answer a query. It can't because Wi-Fi calling hard closes the native data connection and it apparently outranks the My Account app. Once Wi-Fi Calling's turned off I do still see the 4G indicator pop-up randomly when I'm on Wi-Fi.
Does anybody know what harm this is really doing? If the only app or apps that are using native data when Wi-Fi's enabled are Market and My Account how much data is really being consumed? Looking at my data usage (and I'm a pretty heavy user) it doesn't seem much different then what I was burning on the G2.

But... 3/4G are capped at either 2GB or 5GB depending on your plan. Once you hit that threshold you'll be throttled to GRPS speeds which makes dial-up look fast.
Well updating my wife's my account app fixed hers. I had to manually update hers. It was not like mine which updated itself.
But it worked so far. No errors since.

For those with no Data Plan. Try this. (Probably works vice versa) You can't have My Account app running at all. I would root and remove it with Titantium Backup.
1. Factory Reset
2. Skip initial setup
3. Turn on Airplane Mode (hold down Power button for 3 sec)
4. Turn on Wifi
5. Setup Google Account/Market
6. Shutdown phone/Reboot ( Don't know if you need this)
7. Turn off Airplane Mode
This is more legit than my other solution.

no dude, that's not where those things are coming from. secondly, you skip the setup if A) you don't have a sim card or B) if you don't have a data connection. You have to get through all the crap to turn on wifi and then sync. all that wondering and you never thought of that?

I just remove that My Account and other TMo bs.
The worst effect of this is that it eats through your battery life at an alarming rate. seriously, check your cell standby statistic. Way too high for normal.
I recently flashed Firefly3 which enables HSDPA. Does hsdpa use up more data than the traditional 3g. I know they're the "same", but I only have a 200mb plan with att and I've already used about a 100mb in the first week of my billing cycle. I've had this phone for about 6 months and the most data I've ever used to this point is about 60mb for the entire month. I'm almost always on wifi. Does flashing rom use data? Is there a way to find what is using my data? wifi never sleeps, just trying to figure out what is doing this. Is it the ROM?
Flashing a rom won't use data. Apps running like email could be using data. What kinds of apps are you using everyday? I believe the 3g and h only differ in how fast data travels and does not effect how much data is used.

Forgot to mention you can see what programs are running under apps from your home screen. I believe there are apps that will tell you what is using data.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Almost all the apps I use are the same I've been using for awhile. Like i said i'm on wifi about 95% of the time. Something is chompin away at my data, just not sure what is. Does att have the ability to tell me what is doing this. For all I know it could be just one app.
3G watchdog might help you, it's on the market.

Guess I'll try watchdog. thanks. glad it's not the rom, cuz i'm really liking this one so far.

Do you use speed test alot? It eats up slot of data every time you use it (about 6mb every time, if I remember correctly). Did you leave background on, our auto sync? They all take up data.
funny you mention it cuz i just thought about speedtest, i ran it about 4-5 times this weekend. prob the culprit. already uninstalled. didnt like the results anyway. they were making me feel inferior. thanks for the help both of u. much appreciated
Don't worry about using that stuff anyway, just numbers. What actually matters is how long web pages take to load and apps take to start, etc. Real life tests!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
HSDAP is enabled already in stock ROM. It is HSUPA that requires custom ROM (and most importantly non-AT&T modem).
Simply display a H icon (as a lot of custom ROM choose to) instead of 3G icon (as AT&T mandates all its phones to) doesn't mean you're downloading any faster.
The speed has little to do with how much data you will use per month. Of course, faster pipe will let you consume data faster but ultimately it is what you do determines how much data you use. a 1kB emails will only uses up 1KB of data regardless you're downloading it at 100kbps or 1mbps.
Emails and moderate web usage should leave you plenty of legroom on 200MB plan. Just don't do any kind of video or audio streaming or speed test (which they download and upload a large chunk of data to measure your speed).
dont use speed test the servers get busy and i think the carriers may be restricting some bandwith to them because it is used soo much. use the browser to go on speakeasy.com i get way faster connections to that.
to answer the original question, the captivate has hsdpa by default. any modem for a i9000 i9010 i9088 t959 or basically anything that is not a i897 or i896 will enable hsupa and hsdpa also known as hspa.
the difference being that rogers and att restrict the upload bandwidth except for the iphone by disabling hsupa on the phone. this is probably because they are afraid the since android is so flexible and hard to regulate that people will use there phones to do things that use huge amounts of data. if you limit the upload it makes things like video chatting jittery and it makes hosting multiple devices slow but most important it makes hosting anything basically useless while only having a small effect on browsing. hsupa shouldn't increase usage but it does increase speed.
turn off network based location, reject googles collecting annonomous location data when you flash a new rom and turn off any sync option that doesnt need to be on. you will also notice good battery life. then you might also want to find a rom with good add blocking. with all that you should see good battery life and less data useage.
Okay so cm7 has an option for using only 2g data... so I was wondering if using 2g data uses less data than regular data

You would be using the same amount of data download and upload as with 3g, it would just be slower.

i've personally found pictures downloaded via G or 2G to be of much lower quality than when using 3G (even for the same picture) so I'd say it does use less data.

I would say that, in some cases it would, but for the most part it just takes longer. The data savings is negligible. The real savings would be that you're less likely to do things that use data because it takes longer...
The real reason for have the option to switch between 2G/3G is to conserve battery in low 3G areas. Also, in areas of sparse coverage (or over-burdened with too many users) you wont be able to connect to the internet via 3G, yet your phone will continue to try instead of auto switching to 2G. Manually switching to 2G will allow you to connect. I had this problem at a convention last year (PAX).

im trying to find ways to make my phone use as little data bundles as possible...its using so much now even at sleep mode some app/s is chowing my data. im on 2.1 so 3G Watchdog app cannot tell me which app specifically is doing so, i switched to 2G, will that lessen my data usage? what other ways can i do it ? cant wait for 2.3 then i can know which app is chowing so mu ch data in sleep mode
Theoretically, data consumption will be the same, except it will take longer time to do a task (loading email or downloading picture) on 2G.

i cant wait for 2.3 to come out because then i will know what app is eating up my data even though im not using the phone...by the time i wake up in the morning my phone has already eaten btw 5-9 MB. on 2.1 there isnt an app to detect which specific app is eating the data.
Does 2.3 count this ? Sounds like a nice feature.. doeas somebody know a mod which ported thes feature already ?
By 2G i assume you mean GPRS or EDGE?
In which case, data transfer rates are lower but transfer amounts are the same.
Hi, im having a strange problem with my sensation,
It has occured since i bought it.
The problem is that when i dont use the phone for browsing, up/downloading and stuff like that which use data, the signal strengh is 3g with all the bars, but when i then goes on the internet it drops to edge with full bars, which off course makes the internet much slower, and it happens also with YouTube and all the other data app's on the phone.
I Hope somebody can tell me what to do.
Kildenmaf
I'm going to guess that you have exceeded the amount of data allotted for your data plan. When you attempt to actively use your data the throttle that your service provider has placed on your account kicks in and leaves you with only edge service.
The only remedy for this is to wait for your next billing cycle to begin or to go and personally kick the CEO of your mobile phone service provider's ass.

Ok try this...in mobile networks select wcdma as default connection and restart the fone....then try to c if 3g is working fine....if it does then stay on that else u may again choose gsm/wcdma...
If he has indeed hit his cap limit, then you will stuck at 2G speeds. I really have never had to be at 3G in my area. Just 4G and when I hit my cap it's 2G for a while.. But it never shows 2G in the status bar... and that was even on my Tmobile G2
Hi, im sure that i didnt hit the limit. Its a new carrier im using and it allows me to use 5 gb in a month and i have had it for 4 days. Im pretty sure that i havent exceeded the amount limit yet
Ok can someone tell me does having both wifi AND mobile data/3G enabled at the same time cause more drain on the battery?
Or am I better off leaving only 1 enabled at a time.
Thanks.

yes u are correct..... you phone automatically gives priority to WiFi over mobile data....
if im not mistaken, with some phone u can change this.....
but the reason behind it is that wifi "should" give u higher connection speeds than that of mobile data so it give preference to it

thats a yes a no from observation.....
sometimes i have on both but it connects n give preference to the wifi.... but data is still on... its not using mobile data but there is some amount of battery drain....
if u manually turn off ur data however, u might seee a weeee bit improvement in the battery drain...
it jus depends on ur device and what u have running
with my atrix 4g..... with the current rom
i jus leave both on when using wifi but once im not using wifi... i turn it off..... battery drain it jus a tad bit more with both on but not significant....
so id say u cfan leave both enabled.... once out of wifi, switch it off cause its gonna take more battery power searching for wifi signals
The data stays on while WiFi is on but all data traffic if passed through Wifi (if connected) and the data stays on just to keep it "alive" so that when u turn off wifi, or lose wifi signal it can quickly switch to data practically without you noticing any lags. Battery drain is minimum by data if u are connected to wifi and data is on.
