What does the community need most? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If anyone has a good idea for something that i can test that will be useful for everybody, let's hear it!
I'll compile all (sane) suggestions into a poll, and decide by vote.

you want to test something? or make?
cuz MIUI needs wimax (miui.us seems to have got it working. new release shortly)
and I'll perform sexual favors for Skip using Volume on MIUIv4. Only thing I'm missing at this point.

MIUI music player with all functions working on non MIUI roms. Have been struggling for that since some time now.

Things i can test! I've no experience in developing for Android!
Edit: I've been given a 40gb Dev-host account, so if anyone can think of how i might best put this to good use for the community, let me know

I'd very much like to see call recording on our devices. I missed that feature, having used it previously on both my G2 and Galaxy S.

Well, you've made performance and user experience benchmarks on ROM's and kernels, as well as on governor-scheduler combinations.
So how about ROM-kernel combinations? I know most ROM's come bundled with their stock kernels that have been optimized to work best with the ROM, but we also have independent kernel devs who are really good in getting the most out of stock and custom kernels.
Also, with the number of possible ROM-kernel combinations, this may be monumental work, but maybe you can focus on real independent custom kernels, like say Matr1x, Franco, Trinity and Air (yes, Air, despite allegations of plagiarism), and if you have time, then maybe you can include stockish ones like _thalamus's and Pete's.
Just my suggestion, of course. I'm a big fan of your work for the community and I look forward to results of your tests.
Thank you and more power!

The "community" needs to learn how to frigging read!

Indeed. I'm not an Android developer! I just like to test things.
There might be a ROM/kernel compatibility test i can do. Any other TESTS anyone else would like done thoroughly and objectively?

On a more serious note, i can't think of anything else to test. You've already done it all. That new buffer mod may have some merit to it (i did some light reading on it but not beyond one source), though unsure how you could objectively test that unless you're sitting on some expensive equipment.

Oh lol, totally missed the point.sorry about that. What about testing that audio patch that surfaced in the nexus development vs voodoo audio?

+1. I was just about to say this. Maybe against a few new ones out there like beats audio. Also Voodoo colors might be something I would like to see it tested (not sure against what).

Beats audio is nothing but a stupid s curve eq setting.

Ok testing audio is something I know about. Good suggestion

Usually nexus will be laggy after a lot of apps installed..
Can you test which rom or kernel can stand with a lot of apps?

Bedalus! My hero! New trinity kernels were released with 50 and 56 Hz frame rate mods. I remember reading a comment from either you or tchaari that indicated one of you thought lower frame rates could improve battery life. I feel like I've observed an improvement, but it may be placebo. Can you quantitatively settle this?

I suppose I could check it out!

Not sure you have answered it before it..
Many people showed that they can get 5 hours etc.etc with this that super duper kernel..
But for me they must be a different 5 hours screen time playing.temple run with 800-1000mhz compare to browsing and reading with just 200-400mhz right?so how we can solved this?

Or use the Kernel that the developer based the ROM around. The Kernel is the very basis of the ROM. I'm sure the developers have already did this.

I definitely respect what you are saying, but I think that options are there to be explored. To me it's a lot like saying use the ROM the manufacturer developed for the phone. We are here because we like choices and we like to be self-appointed test subjects. To each his own.
subscribed to your channel, thanks for taking the time to do this!
great idea! but i just checked out your channel and you should consider using the dev's version number in the title instead to be more accurate since they often update their roms with new features
so instead of like royal ginger 2.3.3 you should put royal ginger v2.1

A lot more ROM info is needed. Seems kinda silly to be doing ROM reviews and not actually say what ROM is being reviewed. "MIUI 2.3.3" doesn't tell anyone much when there are several MIUI ROMs available for the MT4G.

Sorry about the wait guys. Expect a few more reviews today. Been busy with school and work, but I got some free time, and a new camera. Uber Gingersense, and other rom reviews will be uploaded across the next few hours. I'm uploading the uber gingersense now, and I have an AOSP to upload after that, and the camera has to charge, then I will do virtuoso, and there after.
Subscribed. I highly recommend virtuous fusion v1.0.6. It eats up my ram a little more than some but I've had no lag and its just a beautiful rom.
like the idea of your channel. some suggestions to make it better:
1)better camera
2)don't include instructions on how to flash, unless it is exceptionally difficult/different
3)shorter video and to the point
4)video editing to condense video
Great idea and thanks for your contribution! This will help a lot of people out and save people some time. I think it's rude that certain people would criticize what your doing without a least saying "thanks." I think suggestions and constructive criticism are great, but why do people have to be rude when you're doing something for no compensation simply to help others out? Just kind of pi$$es me off. [TWEAK][GB] Faster Scrolling (Disable Scrolling Cache)

after noticing this mentioned in truckerglenn's port of f1, i did a little searching and found this great how-to thread (be sure to thank the OP!)...clearly written below the level of our beloved "devs" but along the lines of those, like me, who are new to the whole process and looking for a few guidelines while getting our hands dirty
i did both of these tweaks last night on ZEUS BUILD 3 FIXED (and updated), and as they mention in the original thread, increasing the sound increment works visually but audio levels become distorted above 15 (thanks samsung!)...maybe someone knows how to figure this one out
the scrolling tweak seems to work well (or i'm a sucker for placebos).....i've noticed that i can get to the bottom of very long lists and pages in fewer swipes
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411317
for those that dont care to do it themselves but would love to give feedback...i've included my modded framework.jar from ZEUS BUILD 3 FIXED (and updated) to include the scrolling mod...if you're on that rom, just use root explorer like you should know how by now, and drop this baby in /system/framework
Reboot should take a little....dont panic!
and for those on ZEUS BUILD 3 FIXED (and updated) who just aren't sure...i've also included a cwm flashable zip with the stock framework
so now...whadya got to lose? o_0
hope it works!
EDIT: according to Dani, this should work on any att based GB ROM....so thanks for the tip!
Nice

the audio can be tough to find the best drive without clipping.
the distortion can come from many things but if it's clipping it can be damaging to the speaker or hardware. basically analogue audio should change voltage in smooth sinodal(sp?) patterns. if you exceed the input voltage on an amp it can't reproduce the wave and you get a partial sinodus with a flat (dc) area that creates heat in the speaker and extra current draw. it can also damage the input stage of the hardware. things are a little different on digital but you will still get nasty harmonics that can damage stuff. also too much gain can mean that the output stage reaches the source voltage before the top of the wave. the problem is getting the most out of the hardware and figuring which level is causeing the clipping.. there will be an ideal gain for each stage and the content will vary in volume.. its a big balancing act and manufacturers tend to leave a good amount of extra potential to avoid clipping at any stage. some extra may be added in the framework some in the kernel drivers but it either takes critical listening and trial and error or some edjucated guessing.
I don't know anything about drivers or kernels so I'm not that Guy but maybe if I try the framework mod I could find a compromise but I never really find that kind of time lately.

Thanks Dani for the input...just to clarify, by distortion I mean the audio maxs out at level 15, if you adjust higher than that, it seems as if audio drops to a lower level and increases to max again as you increase...say you made it so there were 30 increments as opposed to 15...its like this:
1min............15max 16min..............30max
I hope that makes sense...the OP concluded that it wasnt compatible w Samsung but im hoping someone w more pointed knowledge could work it....that would def be a plus in future roms

Cool! Yeah the bullet about smooth scrolling on truckerglenn's F1 port thread really caught my eye too. That's the only thing I miss from the iPhone is the smooth scrolling.

Follow the original link for instructions on how to do it on the other roms for the infuse. The posted links are for the zeus rom from dman, while the files posted may work on roms other than zeus I'd highly advise not using them. ATM = Aynchronous Transfer Mode? if so, does that mean data works in general (sync) but not in Async mode?
Is that a CM9 issue?

Honestly dude, if you can't handle negative criticism then I'm not sure why you bother posting your work. In no way am I saying your roms are bad or anything, I haven't even tried them yet, but what I'm getting at is that there are always people that do not like it or whatever.
My advise to you is that you ignore those people, don't let negative comments discourage you and whatnot. Removing your gb release because people were complained about it seems a little childish. No offense

[Q] Are Most Of These ROMs A Waste? What Do You Think?

*I did not make this thread to discredit, discourage or bash any devs, I am simply asking for opinions on a subject that dawned on me recently. Please speak freely and non biasly. Thanks!*
OK guys, here goes. I've been experimenting with alotta ROMs lately, mostly ICS. In time I've realized that we never have the features that we paid for, mainly 1080p recording. If the phone doesn't oporate the way we paid for it to (And I paid full price) then is it not a waste to flash the ROM?
I love the speed and battery efficiency I get from the devs and I'm blown away by the amount that they've accomplished, but I've been recently contemplating falling back to stock simply because I'll have the awesome camera. I'd even settle for a top notch Sensation ROM. I know this sounds like a complainer thread, but I've been really losing morale with this device. It seems there will be no more hard KB devices so I might defect to a One S or wait for a One S equivalent from T-mobile. What do you guys think?
I will never give up my keyboard. You leave if you like. And these custom roms are supposed to give our phone something it would've never had otherwise. A functioning ICS rom. If you can't live without everything working, then you should stick to stock or stock tweaked. (I can't use 1080p even if it was working. Don't have a fast enough card )
Rom building and compiling takes a lot of time and effort, not to mention skill.
Essentially, these fine devs are doing the work HTC and T-Mobile were never going to do. Lazy greedy scum they are

I personally don't think that it's a waste to flash these ROMs. Mainly because IMO (aside from 1080p recording) we're really getting more than what we paid for if you think about it. All the features that are available with ICS alone would have made this device more expensive to begin with off the shelf. Then add features of CM9 that these devs are cooking into the ICS ROMs or the features of Sense/ICS ROMs combined together...I think we it's a great thing what's been accomplished.
If 1080p recordning is the main thing you really want then I'd follow the previous suggestion and flash stock or go with a modded stock ROM. There will be no defecting for me. I love physical keyboards! I use mine daily in one way or another.
Even if it comes to the point that nothing on this device is supported anymore I will have this phone lol. We have enough to be used as DDs. So all in all for me, I don't think these ROMs are a waste to flash/use.

I'd even settle for a top notch Sensation ROM. I know this sounds like a complainer thread, but I've been really losing morale with this device. It seems there will be no more hard KB devices so I might defect to a One S or wait for a One S equivalent from T-mobile. What do you guys think?

This is why I use Bulletproof. It has everything we paid for, and is much more stable and optimized than the stock rom. I would love to have an ICS rom, but I want everything to work on my phone. This is my choice. I am happy with using a GB rom, because my phone does everything I want it to. If it isn't broke don't fix it.

Do you have one of Blues UV Kernels? I REALLY NEED THE 8%. My computer was fried, and I can't get into my HDD.
Sorry for the off topic.

Both would be nice, I can just UV to 8% using system tuner.

I'm sorta in the same boat as OP. I've flashed everything and found camera limitations with all of them, so I'm really waiting a 1080p fix with flawless camera otherwise before I go back to ICS. I really love how far everything has come this year in terms of development and it's much appreciated, but I don't plan on going back to an ICS ROM without a fully functioning camera. I have an 19 month year old son and just can't risk it!
My dream is ICS with Sense, but even just for a nice camera fix, I think I'd be okay without Sense.
Running Mik in the meantime. Bulletproof was nice except for the green tint to everything.
Hoping for a camera fix soon. Wallet will be opened then!

I am in north carolina, my dev computer is in pennsylvania. I bought yogi's doubleshot, he doesn't have one anymore.
I don't know what I have, but whatever it is it's hundreds of miles away and wholly unavailable.
If you want to host the UV kernels, they were made by yogi, but I'm sure it'll be okay - only issue is no sources, so...?
If it's kosher to link them up here, then feel free to host them and make a thread for it if you want, I have no issue with it, if it'll help someone that's what's important.
Just make sure to credit yogi, and make sure to be explicit about no support from the authors. I'm not quite in a position to do so yet with my new job, still absorbing a lot of data and training, so my brain and body are worn and exhausted after my shift ends in the morning.
I'll bring this to yogi's attention, or at least ask about it, but I don't see an issue with sharing it, provided the two requests I made above are filled.

Oh, not gonna quote the whole OP yet again in the thread on page 1... But...
Op - if you feel something is lacking, you are in the place to give you the best shot at figuring out how to make it do what you want.
As far as getting all the features you paid for, well, you paid htc or tmobile, or a little of both, or you bought it secondhand, but the money was originally collected by one or both of those entities. If you use the software they provide, then you get what you paid for.
Using an alternate software version, like what you find here, actually gives you much more then what you paid for it - for you paid nothing, and got a whole lot in return.
You can jump in and help the active devs solve problems, or wait until they do, but the argument about getting whatever value you invested real money into evaporates the moment you flash any non-stock OS.

I would but I have no computer, I got a hold of your OC kernel. Then dropped the UV my self using some chart I found here. I can't wait to see you back here. CM9 soucre, and 3.0 Kernel Soucre. Bulletproof ICS?

Virtuous Inquisition & Rubix Ice 5.3 both have functioning 1080 video recording. There may even be a couple more. I can't recall. V I even uses the original Doubleshot camera.

Not true... Virt Inq dosn't have working 1080p, or the DS camera. It's using the Sense 3.6 camera. Only Rubix, and any stock based Roms have it(1080p/DS Camera).

Heck, I've got a computer. Why can't we just upload it to a share site with permission, of course. If this is the same same Yogi from the G2 section, I remember him and he was a nice guy. I doubt he'd mind with proper credit. Let me know if I can help. I'm still settling in here and am a newb as far as the Doubleshot goes. I'd love to support this device with whatever can like I try to do with all my devices. Just looking for what needs to be done/or something helpful that's not too much beyond my expertise or time lol! I am a bit concerned and confused on the framework variations between ICS and GB but I can pick it up as I go. I've only run 2 ICS roms between two devices so I have a lot of reading to do. Well, my computer is here if y'all need it. Feel free to pm me if anyone needs it or if I can help.

To be fair, I never used this feature before I flashed CM9, and I continue to not need it. Cameras, to me, are just a bonus. I just want a faster phone with better battery life.

What is the best/lightest rom for the HOX

What is the best vanilla rom and what is the best modified sense rom?
I want it to be light (uses a low amount of ram) and more stable/fast than the stock rom that gets shipped with your AT&T HTC One X... with better battery life.
Thanks,
Wir3d
This post is not going to be received well, FYI, but before they lock you down : I'm really enjoying CleanRom Lite. It's definitely more responsive than stock. It's Sense-based. Very stable (based on my experience, more stable than stock even).
I don't think any of them right now are going to affect battery life in any appreciable way.
There is no "best" ROM. The best one, is the one that fit your wants and needs, and those are not the same from person to person.
Also, just browse the forum or do a search. There are already lots of other threads like this.

There's no one answer because roms perform differently on different phones depending on usage and individual configurations. 500 people may love one rom to death, but you may find it doesn't work so hot on your phone. You have to test them out and see what's best for you.
Read the ROM threads, find one that you think looks good to you, flash it. Only way to find out.

This all comes down to personal preference so you'll have to go through and see what works for you, each ROM has pros/cons. I've tried 3 myself and I found that the Nocturnal SE 1.7 gives me a good speed boost and battery life, I'm getting about 22-28hrs total with ~3hrs screen time at 50% brightness.
Thanks guys, I know the rules of the forum very well.. the point of it was to see which one uses the least amount of ram and get some feedback at the same time. I was a HD2 owner for 2 years and was involved in the HD2 forums for as long as I have owned the phone.I just got the the HOX and wanted to get something on it quick..
I don't see a point of injecting every single rom into my phone just to find out which one uses the least amount of ram when I can start a thread and and find out that way and at the same time get some feedback..that is the whole point of a forum like this..to communicate with others that have similar devices and can help you out.. I've checked out the pages for almost every rom but I haven't seen one that clearly states how much ram it uses for example 341 MB/1000MB...
I use the Wcx illuminati series roms , they are screaming fast , stable , and they have a mod version and stock version .. and three kernels to choose from .

I just registered over there to check it out... I don't know man... it doesn't seem like he really cares if anyone flashes his ROM or not. Gotta have 10 posts to even download it, there's no actual changelog, no list of mods, no screenies.... how am I supposed to know if I even want to flash it?

First off... Howdy
Doesn't care? Lol, that's harsh ... I know wild child personally and he's the only guy I know that is awake all hours , every day of the week making updates, tweaks, and roms. And never puts a Rom out that doesn't impress, the 10 post rule was put into place to get rid of those who just didn't want to contribute , 10 posts is a very small price to pay for the time and effort put into the work. You can get 10 just hitting the different forums and helping out , and post #2 usually has the change log. They are there I just checked.

I didn't really mean it like that, not trying to detract from the hard work that Wildchild puts in. I'm sure it's an awesome ROM and I'm sure he works very hard on it. I just can't find any information on it, even on his own site. After a fair amount of searching, I have no clue what features it has, what kind of tweaks have been made, if it's been themed at all, or just how it differs from the stock ROM. I have seen lots of people mention his ROMs and how awesome they are, so I'm quite curious and would love to check it out but no way am I flashing a ROM that I know quite literally nothing about.
Aokp by rohan32 is best vanilla rom out right now...not even close. That is if you don't mind having a non working video camera. It's extremely light (about 140 megs) and very fast when joined with nova launcher. It has mods out the ying Yang too.

Basically his regular ROM is a tweaked stock ROM and retains all of the stock look with a nice increase in speed. The modded ROMs he releases are more themed and stuff. And it will have a tweaks app built for his ROM that will allow all kinds of customizations. Kind of similar to what's in the xi40 ROM. I used his modded ROM on my Vivid and it was rock solid. I would definitely give it a try, they are very solid ROMs. I saw you posting over there earlier.
