Pantech Crossover Custom Roms - General Questions and Answers

Hello, I have just rooted my Pantech Crossover. Its kind of a low-end phone so there isn't that much out there for it so I was wondering if there were any usable custom roms for it because I haven't been able to find any. Thanks

Wait did you root 2.2 or 2.3?

I rooted it when it had Android 2.2.1 I would like to put either 2.3 on it or Ice cream sandwich if possible.

Okay lol good. I was about to wonder how you rooted 2.3 and none of us had heard of it yet. Fyi if you do upgrade to gingerbread (software is available on pantechs website) you will lose root. Thus far no one knows how to get it back either.

I'd also like to answer your question that there's nothing in the way of custom ROMs for the crossover. Most of my luck in terms of performance has been biting the bullet, losing root, and upgrading to 2.3. From there I've installed the FTL (faster than light) launcher and turned off the lock screen. This launcher is only for 2.3+ but its tons faster than even the Zeam launcher, while still keeping aesthetics reasonable.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Ok... I can't upgrade to 2.3 because the att update is only for post paid phones. I have the crossover as a gophone. Thank you though, right now I am using launcher pro with a few 3D effects enabled and it runs pretty smooth but I will still look into the other launchers you recommended. Oh, and does the FTL launcher actually increase speed or just reduce home screen lag? Because I don't lag very much at all haha Thanks Oh wait never mind the update is on PANTECH'S website haha i found it. Now I have to decide between a rooted 2.2 or normal 2.3

Oh glad you found it on their website. I was going to say, my friends is also a gophone. It terms of speed, I would say that yes FTL does minimize home screen lag, but it also takes up less memory/background processing power. So yes technically it doesn't increase the overall phone speed as it is just a launcher, but it does minimize background usage which seems to make it faster when multitasking.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Cool, but what is your opinion on keeping it rooted with 2.2 versus normal with 2.3?

Well when I upgraded my friends phone I didn't know I would lose root. Looking back, I'd probably still do it. The phone overall seems a bit faster, just less space for apps due to more bloat.

I have the pantech crossover as well and once u update it to gingerbread 2.3.6 u do infact lose root. In order to get it back u have to search for the superuser .zip for this phone and flash it in recovery mode. Once ur phone reboots u now have gingerbread 2.3.6 with root.

I knows it mad old but any customs roms every come about you know of?

I'm with you, the only android phone i can afford. would be cool to see some cooked roms with root and OverClocking tools.

havent seen any that i know of but i dont have the phone anymore because i switched to verizon and ive got the droid incredible 2 now. with it being a low end phone tho im sure the only thing that will come out for it is another ota update if even that.

[OFFICIAL] Gingerbread to start roll out tomorrow!

http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1818
As the notice says, what will start today "will be a limited pilot for the update" with "a broader rollout to myTouch 4G customers will begin in the coming weeks and will continue through the end of the year." It sounds like a lucky few MT4G owners could get the update today, but the majority will probably have to wait a few weeks, if not months.
I've had Gingerbread on my phone for a long time now.
My phone is rooted through Visionary, will this cause an issue with the OTA update?
You will not receive an OTA update while rooted.
Can someone make a Backup/ROM for new release.
I don't feel like going back to Stock just to get an update.
I updated the radio and phone is rooted. Don't want to have to give up root just to have a peek at this.

I'm sure one of our amazing devs will have rom for us in a couple days. The devs here are much faster than waiting for an OTA update.
i got my OTA update this morning at 745am central time.
Why do rooted users want an ota? That takes away the point us using xda, just equity for devs to make a better version with more features and fixes.

Because sometimes the stock rom is better than the custom built roms. It took a long time for me to find something that was nicer than the stock phone.
For me, a lot of the custom roms are themed in a way that looks terrible to me, and a lot of them just feel inconsistent. The stock MySense that came with the phone was much nicer to use. It wasn't until the Sense 3.0 roms started coming out that it made me actually want to switch away from stock.
I rooted to try new roms, but sometimes, stock is better ( for me at least ).

Then you wait for a stock rooted rom. Usually released in a few days after the official one (however for this update it was out about 2 days ago). If you update OTA you will lose root.
Running stock and rooted, that way I am able to change what I want to or leave it as is and have the ability to run apps requiring root

I guess I should have added the caveat that I went with the stock rom but root added. OTA somehow translated to stock with root in my head.

A lot of the custom roms while faster are buggy. I just upgraded from a Mytouch 3G and this phone is still amazingly fast to me, I don't need the extra speed.
I am not sure what advantages the OTA will have for most of us. The custom ROMs have removed all the bloat and are much faster. Additionally, most everyone running a custom ROM has already been using Gingerbread for months now.

I've used many custom roms that are pretty much bug free , and sometimes even stock has bugs, there is no such thing as PERFECT BUG FREE CODE, I've never come across that.

Custom roms usually have the least bugs compared to stock roms not to mention that we get quicker fixes than what Google and HTC can give us. I'm pretty sure you probably not using the stock kernel. Most kernels bundle with stock are minimal line decent at best. Most of these roms in the mytouch community are bug free.

I had stock 2.2 on my original Glacier for about, oh, two hours or so before I got home and rooted/flashed CM7 to it. The power button broke within a month, though, so I unrooted it and switched it out for a new one.
The new one I rooted while waiting for the bus, and flashed CM7 on the bus ride to SF. So this phone has actually only had the stock ROM for less than 20 minutes.

If it's bug-free, wouldn't that also make it stable? Personally I don't need more than 1GHz, but I make a moderate overclock to 1.2GHz in order to reap the benefits of silky-smooth animations and scrolling widgets. App switching is also faster.
I run CM7 nightlies. Occasionally I run into bugs. Very infrequently. The most recent bug I encountered was random soft reboots in nightly #133, which was promptly fixed in nightly #134. Before that, the last bug I found was waaaaay back in 7.0.3 stable, when wifi refused to work properly with faux's AOSP kernel (and this isn't even a CM bug, it was an issue with faux's kernel).
CM7 has been stable enough to be a daily driver since 7.0.0 RC1.

Probably never, there are rumors of the g2x getting ICS 4.0 sometime, although that is highly unlikely. You can try out CM7 for 2.3.5.
What he said
LG and T-Mobile won't come out with any updates. LG releasing the source code, they abandoned support.
XDA is only reason this phone gets any kind of love and support.
There is hardly anything noticeable between 2.3.3, 2.3.4, and 2.3.5.
If you want a newer version, do a custom rom. I can't understand why people, on XDA especially, fight so hard to stay on a stock rom that is old and lacking. My neighbor bought a G2x the other day and I NVFlashed his phone in like 4 minutes (mostly due to downloading and finding the XDA thread for the NVFlasher).
Gingerbread is available in a plethera of roms for our device. I'd much rather LG focus their efforts on a timely ICS release.
I just wish nvidia would release drivers. I would love a2dp on the newer roms

I hope we don't get 2.3.4 or 2.3.6 if that comes. I want LG to just focus on getting out 2.4 as near as available as possible. All the learning from vanilla with driver fixes should make 2.4 a snap.
At this point nothing about 2.3 any variants makes any difference after 2.3.3
The G2X vanilla should easily be able to handle Android 4, or 2.4 whatever its named sandwich. The hardware is spec. And should be able to get onto the next version after Ice Cream, at that time it will be like a basic model that can still easily support.
I am expecting 2 more full releases on the phone, as the cost for LG to do, with the drivers worked out, should be very minimal.
Worse case, LG can license a custom ROM, and toss that out for a couple hundred K. 2 man years cost.

It is nice to see you post something other than the CAL... if you really think LG is gonna release anything other than maybe a small updae which i also doubt. maybe youll join with the CAL.. This is it even LG has said they dont even plan on bringing out the camera appp which i thought they would at least do.
As burk said no proof either way. But history means a lot and sicne this debacle i have looked at lg and see this has been nothing new with them. and Updates have been only carrier pushed for bugs from what i have read.
Yes it would be nice to see something new and great for the phone from LG but dont hold your breath.
hmmm
I would rather LG focus on getting all the bugs fix with this phone rather than releaseing a new os version for it plauged with the same issues and froyo and gingerbread

Wouldn't actually work since gtalk works using NEON which our processors don't have. I haven't tried the alternatives (like vtalk our vtok, something like that) but they don't apparently work well. google has to fix it unless there's been a development I missed.

After the fiasco of 2.3.3, LG is never going to touch this phone ever again. It's dead in the water for all they care, and Tmo isn't going to pressure them into updating because they're focused on pimping the Sensation right now.
CyanogenMod is the only way this phone will ever see ICS, I would put money on that.

You might need to flash back completely to stock so you can get the update. If Not, im sure someone will have it to flash before it even gets totally released. You know how these leaks go.
i am wondering as kies does not work with infuse how can one manually update?
for ex. htc provided ota as well as through htc sync(manual update)

not everybody is getting good speed with rogers based gingerbread.
One can expect good speed on gingerbread with ATT based firmware.
When i had the inspire and then the atrix, the highest i would get was 4 down and 1 up. I read that the infuse was set to run at a higher max speed and as soon as my wife swapped with me, i tested the theory and apparently it was true. I hope gingerbread gives more anyway though.

Then you will likely not see any data speed improvements when AT&T Gingerbread comes out. You also have working HDMI.
The issue is that all of our current Gingerbread ROMs are based on Rogers firmware - they don't achieve HSPA+ speeds and are missing HDMI.

Let me start by saying that I really like Android and Windows Phone 7....can't stand iPhone!!
I have a Captivate but haven't been using it lately as my daily because I have a Windows phone, actually I won the Samsung Windows Phone 7....it runs nice and smooth, with no issues (no FC's, no lag, no restarts)...I repeat no issues at all with it and I still have access to the same apps that I used on Android or other great app substitutes that garner the same results.
I am not going to get rid of my Cappy....going to start flashing the Captivate with different ROMs in time, maybe someone will get ICS to run stable on it someday.

[Q] Really need to ask these questions before I go further

Okay, i'm new to the whole rooting thing and I think I get the basic concept and all of that, but is it beneficial for me?
- Right now i'm running Nova launcher and have it set up perfect for me. No problem with speed or any of that, so not an issue there,
- I have windows 8 so does this make the process of rooting any different? I hear it does in some cases and I don't want to be screwed if I get stuck
- The only reason I am even thinking about rooting is to just get a dang update on my phone. I'm tired of waiting for updates I feel will never come.
- I would need a ROM that I could count on without checking for updates religiously.
- Is rooting something for me? Or should I stick with Nova seeing that I get a satisfying experience with it. (I also hear a lot of ROM's ship with Nova anyway.)
- Is there any step by step tutorials with windows 8 complete with all of the files I will need? (Excluding ROM's of course. I would get those on my own)
If you haven't fully researched rooting or completely understand it I don't recommend it. Also, what's so bad about ics that makes you think jb will blow it away?
Don't take offense as that's not my intention. There are so many posts about people soft bricking their phone or worse mainly because they don't fully understand it or to impatient to wait. The only real reason I rooted was to remove bloatware. I'm still on 4.0.4 and not complaining a smidge

No offence taken at all. I just like the stock android so much which is why I wish I could get my hands on a nexus device, but unfortunately being a college student, I take what I can get.
And iv'e researched it as much as I could im just still confused with a couple things such as the Drivers some people have told me I need to get etc etc. I've watched flows videos over and over and I get HOW to do it, but was there anything done before in any way?
If you dig your setup with nova launcher id suggest sticking with that and wait till official ota. However if u still want to root, make sure its not a USB 3.0 connection as I've seen from another post doesn't seem to work.
Rooting is pretty easy as long as you don't skip steps. Unlock bootloader, flash recovery, flash superuser, flash Rom after wiping everything but not before you make a nandroid backup of stock Rom and save it to storage externally, flash boot.img located within zip after Rom flash

By the sound of it, you have no need for root. You are happy with your current setup and doesnt appear to be an 'advanced user' who messes around in the system all day.
My suggestion is to read up what root actually does, then decide if its something you need/want.
By the sound of your first post - no, you dont need root.
Re: [Q] Really need to ask these questions before I
If you are happy running Nova launcher on a sense kernel than just wait for ota.
By the way... Nova being used by a rom is no different than what you are doing now.
Now if you want the Nexus experience then by all means root. CyanogenMod is awesome on the One S and has everything working fine. I am using it and have the latest Android 4.2.2. CM gives us updates almost as quickly as the Nexus gets.
To the other poster mentioning why would one need jellybean.
Jellybean is on a whole new level compared to ICS. Much faster and smoother. Until you try it you will not understand how ICS is just not as good. Plus the Google Now and the rest of Google services are amazing on JB.

If you are comparing stock ICS with stock JB, JB is terrible compared to ICS. AOSP JB is better than ICS though, on that I can agree.
I was referring to AOSP JB. I gave up on Sense a long time ago. The only thing I miss about sense kernel is the loudness of Beats Audio. There are sound mods available but none are as loud as Beats on stock.
I did try the EU update version of JB and I felt it was much smoother than ICS. Battery life was the negative on stock JB.
CM 10.1 has been incredible. CM will help me hold on to this phone a little longer until I decide between the One, rumored Moto X, or next Nexus.
