Sensation reception is useless - HTC Sensation

We all love our sensation but one thing we cant cope is the bad reception i tried all network provider its same htc sensation gets %30 less signal than any other phone example when my xperia x10 gets -58 db sensation gets -99db.so sent to warranty first they just sent it back saying updated software which i think new radio so sent back straight away so now they changed system mod(board) still same bad reception i do not know why but htc sensation has a bad design for signal its ok whom lives areas where you get full signal all the time but when you go areas signal not as strong you really feel that with sensation.
has anyone one got way round to it?

I have the same problem because I live in a rural part of England and very rarely get full signal at my house which makes my phone slightly redundant. I would also love a fix for this

I have to agree to a point. My old desire when sat in the same room at home has a stronger signal than my sensation as did my old Sony X10. A bit disappointing really but not the be all and end all I suppose. The other thing that annoys me is when my Desire hangs constantly on HSDPA as opposed to 3G, my sensation bounces between the two all the time giving a poor data connection at times.

May help a bit.
My Desire also have better signal than my Sensation XE, below is what I did to my Sensation it improve a bit the signal bar.
But it seem does't not work with my wifi signal since I using the custom kernel. It help improve my signal before, although I am not sure if really the custom kernel help the wifi signal. Just not work with wifi right now.
If the custom kernel really help the wifi maybe if developer's may also can make to boost the network signal.

*Please make sure you tape all the wire so it will not short circuit the phone. But not cover the contact point(gold/yellow circuit between the phone and cover)
I still can fine other's idea to replace the wire, you may have other's brilliant idea. I thought of replacing with conductor tape but don't have time to find on store.

what the worst thing is HTC is refuted the issue they say get new sim or use your phone gms only!!whats the point having smartphone and not to be able to use internet anyhow going to consumer dispute court to get my money back from them their aftersales is useless

when i hold it a certain way i lose my reception...seems liek im using an iphone 4! lolol

Answer: Yes it is useless.
Nothing much you can do other than put up with it, this phone is pretty much a mini PC anyway.
At least my old Nokia 6310 had better than perfect reception, it was like a satellite phone lol. I went on camp somewhere with the whole year at highschool, and I was the only only person that had reception. Ultimate Win!

As I write on my post, it definitely will not resolve the problem but will improve the signal. But it help me a lot, I usually do this trick/mod on other's devices like tablet, bluetooth adapter or wifi adapter. Using "Ugly Method" usually get add about 1 to 2 bar. The "Not Brilliant" will just increased a bit about 1-5db I guess. If not problem for you, you can make the "Not Brilliant" on the outside much longer it will be increased more. I usually used shred wire from broken pc Power Supply, wire with hair thick but can band. But make sure the phone contact the wire. But make sure the wire not to thick or to much, because you will have problem to close the case.

As quoted in a previous thread, I owned a ONE S for a period of 2 days. The reception was one of many reasons for the return.
I have to be honest and say I've never had any signal issues with my XE....(Touch-Wood).
Regards.

I've not noticed my Sensation being any different to any other phone I've owned over the past two years.
I do live in a strong signal area though, and work in a building with a cell tower on the roof

I have no issues with my Sensation XE. I'd have even better reception if I wanted to pay for expensive Telstra

I did not notice issue either.

I've had 3 HTC Incredible S phones and now have an XE, all of them had or have worse mobile signal reception than my earlier Desire. My XE loses reception here at home on O2 depending on where I am in the house, my son's older Samsung Galaxy which is also on O2 doesn't have a signal problem.

[Q] NS4G Nexus S 4g, very poor signal, seeking advice

Hello all,
I just received my new Nexus S 4G for Sprint yesterday (5/14) and I love the phone, but I have just awful service on my phone.
I live in Princeton, NJ, which is a town notorious for not having the best service (for all providers) to begin with, but compared to my Epic4G that I came from, there is definitely something wrong with service for my NS4G. Note: there is no 4G here, so I cannot test that.
There are not much discussion of poor signal for the NS4G here on XDA, but there are numerous reports from people having similar problems elsewhere, i.e. http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/67927?start=0&tstart=10
I will describe my problem...
Calls and texts, MMS, works just fine... however, my 3G service is abysmal. Running speedtest.net, half of the time I pull in 30-40 KB/s, occasionally (maybe 1 out of a dozen times) I can pull in 40-80 KB/s. The other half of the time, either speedtest refuses to run because of network problems, or I literally pull in 3-6 KB/s. My browsing experience is horrendous, almost useless, downloading apps from the market is a 20 minute ordeal.
I have been able to connect to a WiFi network, and everything seems OK from that standpoint.
My fellow XDA users, I seek advice from you all...
I know that the NS4G is brand new to the Sprint network, and is the first CDMA nexus phone. I know that other phones have launched with similar problems, and they usually receive fixes relatively soon...?
Do you think I should try swapping my NS4G for a different one? In my opinion, I think if I swapped the NS4G, I would just have a different phone with the same problems.
Should I wait 30 days and see if service improves by then?
Anyone with similar experience? Suggestions? Switch back to Epic4G and wait it out (noooooo! )?
Thanks
I'm having the same problems, except I'm pulling slightly higher speeds than you. I've talked to sprint and they got a tech to come check out my towers and they'll let me know by monday if its a tower problem, or if it's just slow speeds in my area (its not my phone as i'm able to pick up normal speeds in other areas). I'm giving sprint a week or two to clear this up or else i'm taking the phone back within the 30 days.
also, did you try updating your prl/profile? it's unlikely that it'll help, but worth a shot.
I get around 3mbps on 3G
And around 5-6 and sometimes 7 mbps on 4g
Som im clearly not having this issue, but i will go roaming after the phone falls asleep for a while.
same problem
Im having the same problem I only had the phone 12 hrs I thought mayb it was da tower den I did a speed test between my epic n the ns4g n the epic blows it out the water not on da speed test app but in real life testin like pullin up web pages
The signal is weird. Signal strength at work on my Epic was 5-6 bars. Nexus S 4G is 1-2 bars. Signal strength is between -76 and -92. I forget what my Epic was pulling in actual numbers strength wise. Speed is the same awful crap though on 3G.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I've had two Nexus S devices on Sprint and they both exhibit the same weak wireless reception. In real life I would say the differences are minor or insignificant but I was hoping for better or at least same radio reception as my almost 3 year old HTC Hero and clearly that isn't the case. Hopefully Sprint can rectify this in the future with some sort of update since I'm not aware of T-Mobile users having similar problems which would indicate an actual hardware flaw(?).
I'm almost sure its a sprint side issue. I left sprint for 3 months and came back and I've had an epic, evo, and nexus exhibit the same behavior. Before I left sprint I had zero issues and I've owned all of their smartphones and one point or another. It just seems like its slower in certain areas though.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
try updating PRL
Since our phones don't accept network pushed updates you're going to have to do a manual prl update. If that hasn't been done your service will suffer. That should help a bit.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App
I've tried all the tricks, updated profile, PRL, reactivated my phone, etc.
Nothing is working...,
I've also noticed (completely unrelated issue) that my earpiece speaker crackles at any volume; its subtle but very annoying.
This seems to be an issue for people with the nexus. My old phone had full bars whereas with the nexus I'm only getting 1 or 2 bars on 3g. Seems to be an issue with their towers or Google. Its an issue with their network and not the phone. I spoke to sprint earlier today and they said they are aware and working to resolve this. So they say if course..
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Update (end of day 2):
For the last 5 - 6 hours I have been receiving moderate to adequate 3G service, albeit pretty inconsistent.
I now average 70-120 KB/s, and rarely drop below the lower 70s. This is more on par with what I was getting with my Epic4G for the last 6 months, always pulling in around 120-170 KB/s pretty consistently.
I've run 240 speedtest.net tests today, lol.
I hope it never goes back to how bad it was yesterday and this morning.
Time will tell, -- I'll let you know what happens.
I spent a good deal on the phone today with Sprint, 1 out of the 3 people I spoke to said that spotty reception on the NS4G was a known problem and engineers were at work fixing it. The others had no idea what I was talking about. I don't know what to believe.
Awww man you gotta be kidding me... I already get awful speeds with my Evo and now it's even worse with the Nexus 4g... the phone i'm planning on getting?!?!? this sucks =/
Anyone else's uploads constantly double or sometimes triple that of their download?
My last 5 3G speedtests in kbps
182/325
307/488
99/469
47/169
59/152
There is something seriously wacky with the way the radio is acting.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Update (Morning of day 3):
Everything is back to crap again this morning. FML, lol
Edit:
Each speedtest.net test keeps returning downloads between 5 - 15 KB/s
I'm getting crap 3g speeds as well, up and down
Ditto. 3G reception at least 30% weaker than my Evo. Side note, my battery life has been crap too, I wonder if the phone is using more power trying to hold the signal?
I spent a little over an hour on the phone with sprint yesterday for this same issue. They trouble shot my phone, prl updates, network refreshes, nothing worked. They told me I had a defective unit and to exchange it. I went to best buy and the rep had an evo. He had full bars in the store, his dBm was -76 or whatever, it was in the 70's. Mine had 0-1 bars and a dBm of -96. He activated my new phone and checked it, same exact thing. He got sprint on the phone and they made him go through all the same bs prl updates and stuff. After a half hour, they told him they were looking into the issue.
Ive seen alot of people say its AOSP that causes the poor reception, and that is true to an extent. The EVO running CM does not get the same as sense roms. I live in a basement apartment, I know. On sense, my evo sent an mms message almost instantly. On CM, it wouldnt send them at all and it dropped calls like nobodies business.
When it comes down to it though, the radio on the Nexus 4G is just not performing well. I hope there will be some sort of update from google or sprint to address this in the very near future, or I will have left Verizon and sold my Thunderbolt for no reason...
I hope this issue can be fixed with a software update. I would like to know within the 30 day return period so I can get back on an evo running cm7 if I need to.
This is getting blown out of proportion in more ways than one. YES, the Nexus S 4G does not have as great of signal reception as the EVO or Epic. This is already well known. However, just like the iPhone 4 when it came out, the AOSP version of 2.3.4 on the NS4G doesn't display signal bars properly. That's part of the problem. But when you dive down into actually how many dBm's you're getting - that's where the problem lies.
In San Francisco, I typically get 600-1000kbps on 3G and 4mbps-8mbps on 4G WiMAX. Lately, after continually attempting to update the PRL on the device and so on, I've gotten results like the one below. This is on 3G in Daly City, CA just outside SF.

Poll: Death Grip, a real problem?

Hi everyone! Normally, I use my Htc sensation on Landscape Mode when navigating (I think that this is a very normal way to hang a smartphone when you're surfing the net) and I've noticed that the loss of Wifi signal is a real problem. So, I would know through this poll how many of you have encountered this same problem.
I recommend you to test your Htc Sensation in a room that's not the same where it is the router WIFI.
DEATH GRIP on Landscape Mode:
youtube.com/watch?v=ptC0pZVIuCE&feature=related
Every Sensation has antenna attenuation
All of them do. Every single one. The level of attenuation is dependent on your router radios, position, signal strength. Some see a slight problem while others see a more pronounced one. I see it only slightly. A software update likely wouldn't change that either. If it happens to be enormously burdensome in your case, a different router or another device (i.e. not the Sensation) will be your only choices.
It isn't a problem, yet I never really surf in landscape so for me that would be a no , however it does lose some signal slightly but not enough to affect anything
Just out of curiosity (since I had the problem on other HTC handsets), has anyone gone into Wifi where you would select an access point and increased the setting to performance (mine is charging at the moment and off so I can't give you the direct info but its something like communications, wifi, it shows a list of APs, then you hit menu and hit advanced and increase power consumption)? This drained the battery about 15-20% faster but gave me a much wider range on wifi. On my EVO, for example, I started off not being able to leave my apartment - with this setting on, I was able to walk all the way to the mailbox which was over 1000 feet away before my wifi would fade.
EDIT: Settings, Wireless and Networks, Wi-Fi Settings, menu, advanced.
Thanks Etherrealremnant for teaching me that setting.
I think it helped a little bit, in making it last longer, but it ultimately dropped out of wifi signal again.
Good to keep in mind though.
It's probably the biggest problem on the phone. Forget about touch screen responsiveness because that can be fixed with a software update. This probably won't which sucks.
Here is a video I made for Smash earlier. It's in another thread but I'll post here encase some of you didn't see it. The WiFi death grip is not a issue for me with my router or my buddy's router I'm filming the issue on. It also doesn't effect me while I'm at work either whether I have 5 bars to start with or 1 bar to start with. I have no doubt that some of you are experiencing very bad death grip issues. I would return it until you get one without the problem.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzWyvGLjKhs
I personally went through two Sensations that had the death grip issue with Wi-fi before I gave up and returned the phone. The phones I had would totally lose the Wi-fi signal. I could have dealt with a slight drop that did not interfere with browsing or watching video, but no signal meant no video for me.
I have the death grip problem. Htc and t Mobile both said it is unheard of. They told me to swap the phone out.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
It really exists, but it has never effected me i think..
The WiFi on this phone is my only real complaint so far. It has about half the distance that my G2x did and the death grip is definitely there. This is problematic since 4G runs about 150kbps around my house...
I have wifi calling. When playing a game and the signal strength drops, it switches to a regular cell and interrupts my game saying it switched. Even if an app isn't using wifi, the wifi calling app does the usual popup announcement. Other issues that come to mind is when the signal drops, sometimes the game saves bad recover data. Running bad data either crashes the app or I get a notification of a bad save file. Another issue is having a game lock up. The home button still works and I can kill the process instead of pulling the battery. Once I got a black screen where it seemed like the OS locked up and nothing worked other than pulling the battery. All these issues go away when I put it in airplane mode although I need to take off airplane mode when I'm done.
One of the biggest problems of Sensation IMO. I can't even use it in landscape
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e
Can't use it
can't use the phone in landscape mode with 2 bars...
the problem is there and i had some emails changed with HTC and they recognized the problem, they even send me a picture how to hold my phone in the landscape mode ... doesn't work !
They should send instruction how to hold your phone now!
I put a small piece of foil over the top connectors. Now my wifi runs perfect.
Prior to this my signal would drop as soon as I left the room my router is in. now I get steady bars even outside my house.

Stick the foil under the 2 prongs and sorta just wrap right over and let it fit the groove perfect. Than slide your cover right over the too shouldn't need any added force as the foil will fit right in the groove.

[SOLVED] Did anyone try Hardware MOD of Sensation to Boost Signals..

I am tired of low network signals in my home @ basement with Sensation ...
My wife with x10 mini gets enough signals on her mobile to send/receive calls without voice interruption and I can't even dial from it...
My friends tell me that my mobile mostly remains off but i know it's due to low reception...
How can such a small x10 mini perform better that Sensation?
Last option for me is to boost reception by Aluminum foils... Anyone tried such a Hardware Mod?

Alas, I can't say I've tried this but now that you've mentioned this option I'm tempted to experiment with it.
What i do have a lot of experience with is flashing and testing different (software) radios. You should read up on the topic of "radio" and "RIL" since you've assessed that location is not the problem.
Then again you might have reasons for not wanting to flash ...
If you really want to enhance your reception with hardware, this guy makes sense http://www.metacafe.com/watch/750707/how_to_make_a_cell_phone_antenna_under_5_minutes/.
best regards,
Lol... The initial part of video is exactly what i do when i get calls....... But that's really not the mod i would want... I want some extra foil inside casing that should not look bad from outside...
I once connected aluminum foil with the terminals with back cover off and its signals went from 3 bars to full 5 bars... But when i placed aluminum foil inside and packed back cover on it, signals dropped again...
I have tried ALL radios and RILs in the thread... With 10.56 i used to get 2-3 bars but with those i couldn't even send or receive a message... When it's 4 bars, it was working
With latest radio 10.58 and ics radio 11.59, It simply puts 'no network' when signals are low enough that are not ready to make calls...
So flashing radios is just playing with bar indicators. No gain ...
hardware antenna booster.

I understand.
It's weird that the mini performs so much better at the exact same location. Have you excluded the possibility that you have faulty hardware?
Amazon sells an antenna booster for HTC that basically enhances the antenna in the way you describe. Just search for "htc antenna booster". Even though they only cost a dollar or two, it might be more fun to copy their design and make them yourself.
I look forward to your findings.
Good luck!
Yeeeeeeesssss....
I made it... Today i tried myself to get a network boost and it worked!!
I called my friend today from basement and walked every corner of the Room to test the mod and he said my voice was crystal clear without interruption...
Then i asked him to call me and i placed my mobile in a place where i used to get absolutely no signals and he told me my number got through to him on first attempt....
it never worked in my room and now its working everywhere in the Room...
I am sooooo happy...
The only problem is, when i grip the phone then its the same situation as previously ... For that i have to ensure i hold my phone on thumb and index finger and keeping the palm away from the back...
But this much is also enough for now... In basement i won't hold it tight...
I seem to remember seeing this mod being done, but that it had a negative effect on battery life. Please report back after a couple of days use, I'd like to hear how you get on.

Maybe I'm wrong but did You try to change network mode setting in Mobile network section to GSM only.
It works for me in places with poor reception.
It will give you crappy internet, but you can switch it back to GSM/WCDMA Auto when you leave the house.
With GSM only you should get signal anywhere in the house or basement or any other place where any other phone can have any signal.

don't consider me so low.... It's the first thing i do after flashing ROM i.e setting it to GSM only, there is no WCDMA network in my country...it's all GSM...
Congrats.
I'm happy you've found a solution.
Haha looking forward to your vid to see where you placed the fool. I tried foil once, but didn't notice much difference. I read somewhere that aluminum isn't the best conductor, so I was going to try gold foil instead. Just never got around to it.
anyone ever figure out how he did it? lol
anyone?
signal fix
That's what I just did, from no signal at all-0 to 2-3 bars and I bet it can be done better and get more.
Can you tell me what is the result with and without your antenna in "asu" or "db". An example how much did it improve your metal foil. And anyway why did you choose one side longer than the other?

You bet it can you have made a half wave dipole the length of each element is critical depending on frequency used there are simple formulas to work out the exact length of the antenna
Still great work around if it actually works one problem is the case acting as a shield to your two tinfoil elements
Worked well for me.

sensation 4g losing wifi bars

HI guys..
I've a sensation 4g (tmous) with arhd 6.7 (but it does the same with stock rom..
As soon as i cover my phone with the case i notice losing a bar of signal, and if i grab the upper part of the phone I completely lost signal!!!
Can anyone of you try and see if is it normal?
Thank you and sorry for my bad english
It's normal as you're covering up the antenna.
On the Sensation the antenna is the whole back cover, and so holding it in a certain manner makes it lose signal. It is one the really annoying things with the poor loudspeaker that makes this phone not live up to the standards we are used to and often annoys me.
i swear my wifi connection is so erratic. sometimes i get awesome connections, sometimes it doesn't connect at all. sometimes my phone has full bars but won't connect.
while i do think it's the sensation to a certain extent... i also think you gotta consider the signal quality and strength of the actual wifi too. technology... sometimes ya love it... a lotta times you are confused and frustrated with it. haha.
Totally normal. Unfortunately.
We share all the same feature "death grip" refer to mobile reviews like gsmarena

[Q] Cell reception and WiFi issues

I hope by posting this here we can find an answer to a problem that a lot of OPO users are complaining of. the device has a terrible cell and WiFI reception when compared to other devices in the same area and using the same wifi networks.
Cell reception:
I`m on a 4G network . however i find that i have 0-1 bar almost all of the time in areas where i used to have 3-4 bars. and as a result i constantly get missed calls notifications. I read that switching to 3G in the phone settings might help, and that`s when i ran into the second problem. Switching to 3G will indeed give me better reception 3-4 bars but then the whole connection becomes erratic, and the phone will go from 3 bars to ``no connection`` back to 4 bars 4 to 5 times every minutes and i will lose mobile data totally on 3G.
WiFi reception and connection:
I have a secure 802.1x connection at work spread over 2 buildings. the phone will connect to 1 only and will not connect to the same network in the other building at all. both have the same SSID , settings, and login information. but the phone will just cycle between `connecting`` to `` secured with 802.1x``. I tried all roms available and the only ROM that worked was `Gummy ROM``. only when using that ROM, is the phone able to connect to that WiFi network!! and i have no explanation for that.
All these problems I mentioned above are consistent across all roms and there seems to be no answer from OPO support or on the official forum for the phone. I hope someone can provide me with a solution or an answer to this.
Thank you all

I'm getting the same problems.
Where signal is always strong, it seems to work OK, but with weaker signal it just screws up!
Its really pissing me off as i've take the phone to work for the first time, just to find out I cannot get any signal there, where by my HTC Desire worked just fine.
Also getting exactly the same problems. It is impossible to use OPO where signal is not so strong although other phones work flawlessly. Reception signal strength goes up and down all the time from full to none bars. Data connection is inconsistent.
Anyone with weak inconsistent signal strength vote here: https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/BACON-132
I still hope that what we are experiencing is due to firmware and drivers issues that can be solved by the developers on XDA. However, the complete silence by OnePlus and Cyanogen regarding this issue despite the number of people complaining, makes me worried that it's a bigger hardware issue that they are trying to avoid and move into "we'll fix it in the next version of the phone” kind of scenario.

That would be bad scenario. I hope that it is just software problems. But seeing how OnePlus deals with the problems I also have doubts.
I would say it's software baseband/modem and CM needs to step it up. My Nexus 5 has a better signal strength. But then Google has a much bigger development team than CM or One plus. My friend has the GS5 and it has the snapdragon 801 chip set and it has a much better signal strength.
So ether the One's antenna is not that great or it a software problem.
As you can see the controller is on chip.

I don't have it as bad as some have posted so hope things get fixed for all.
Yeah. Many users are having problems with cell reception.
It's a shame.
My wife & I both using OPO international version, both of us facing poor signal & sound problem when we get them. Sound problem is currently handled by boosting the sound but frankly the sound is a bit deteriorated. The signal problem is better a bit now by installing oppo 7 radio. Hope the team can put more effort on the signal problem. It is phone!
I have this issue too, but I think this is a hardware problem, because CM and OPO teams do nothing for fix this problem, and Chao Chen at CM Jira says that this poor signal is a normal... I realy think about selling my OPO and buy another phone...
I have pretty crappy signal on mine too (London UK). Signal strength fluctuates wildly even by moving the phone in a different direction. I've reverted to the previous modem via a flash .zip and things seem a bit better but it's early days. I would have thought that number 1 priority for a phone is that it actually works well as...well, a phone!
Disappointed that the 'giant killer' tag doesn't quite match the reality.
I sincerely hope there are improvements but I have my doubts.

I don't have this problem on O2 uk wonder if its anything to do with 4g which isn't supported on this network. Have any of you tried PAC rom.
This problem is really starting to be a major issue for me. I expected some improvement by now.
Does anyone know is this has been confirmed as a radio/kernel issue or a hardware issue (antennas maybe).
