i just picked up the htc vivid (at&t).
unrooted.
android version: 4.0.3
htc sense 3.6
i live on the edge of a 3g coverage area so my phone is constantly falling back to 2g on some days. on better days i can put my phone in a sweet-spot in my house and tether with 3g.
the mobile networks options on this phone are extremely limited and i am trying to find a way to just force 2g on bad days so at least its stable even tho its slow.
thank you in advance for suggestions and/or solutions.

I am having an issue locking the phone to WCDMA. I live an area where the EDGE signal is stronger and it constantly drops 3G. After rooting the phone, I locked it into WCDMA and it would stick all the time, even dropping all signal when I moved into an area with only GSM coverage. However, somewhere along the line, I've lost the abillity to lock it in. I have tried going into the Mobile Networks settings and selecting WCDMA Only and also doing the *#*#4636#*#* and neither one will lock it into WCDMA. Anyone else having this issue or know of a workaround for this?
If ur in a edge based area where 3g is minimal, then setting to wcdma is the worst way to go. Wcdma will lock u into 3g/4g signals ONLY! So if your in edge area only, wcdma will not give u data or signal due to the fact the phone is searching for 3g/4g signals only. And GSM or cdma is a different ball park. Set to wcdma preferred and let it pick up what it can. If a 3g or "4g" signal is avaliable,it will automatically detect it and connect.

Its not that I don't have 3G in my area, its just that it only gives me 3 bars as opposed to EDGE which will give me full signal. When it's set on wcdma preferred, it will connect to 3G and after a few minutes switch over to EDGE. With my Captivate and the Inspire when I first got it and before I rooted it, I was able to lock it into only 3G. Somehow after flashing basically every rom in this forum, I can't get that setting to stick anymore.
Ok then flash the ruu of the rooted stock inspire. It is a pd98img.zip u can load and flash via bootloader. It will stay s-off and will flash updated radio and patches. Get your data fixed and GPS and then flash a rom afterwards. Attn1 has it posted in the development.

Same issue here, I called AT&T and they said it's because the cell tower closest to my office is old and supports Edge only so my phone keeps attaching to that tower even though there are other towers in range (that will give me 3 bars of 3G) which are newer.
With the stock rom, even going into the testing menu and setting "WCDMA only", it kept me on the Edge network. I rooted and flashed a custom ROM (Android Revolution) and at first it was great. At the office I could force "WCDMA only" at my desk, when I went into the middle of the building or whatever I would just have no signal (which I was ok with).
Now with the newer versions of the ROM I could no longer force "WCDMA only"... And the OP basically ignores my questions when I ask. Something that worked fine, I flashed a new version of the ROM and it stopped working...doesn't take a genius to figure out it's probably something he changed in his ROM... Not to sound unappreciative of the developers here...they do great work. Just frustrating... >_<
Hi,
I have a HTC Desire S which I bought Sim Free and am currently using a Vodafone UK SIM. I notice that a lot of my calls whilst on a HSDPA signal or even EDGE seem to be routed to voicemail even though the setting is disabled and I experience data blocks. Even though I'm shown I have data connectivity I cant use data and calls wont connect.
I was wondering whether you would think this is a SIM or a phone issue. I have had this on two Desire S phones and when using the SIM with a 2G only phone I don't seem to experience this problem. I'm in an area where there should be great indoor and outdoor coverage and the provider has no reported issues at the moment.
I think the problem is with network...
As you said with 2G you don't experience any issues...that proves the point...
I would suggest use only 2G (GSM) mode rather than edge...
until network improves...
Also that would give a better battery life ;-)
I too had a few calls go to voicemail when I should have had signal to receive calls, on t mobile uk, suspect that it's as the signal strength seems to fluctuate sometimes which I have seen, especially when using wifi And/or data.
Although not happened enough to be a really a massive problem.

Yes, like vampire36 said, the problem is in the EDGE & HSDPA network.
Try using 2G for a while with EDGE & HSDPA are closed for a few days then report back.
Hope this works out for you
I'm also on vodafone uk and I haven't had this issue, I'd say call the support line (as foolish as it sounds) as this isn't a problem I have had at all :/
But for the time being just stick to 2G so you can receive calls and such

Thanks for the tips. Vodafone have told me that there are 2 masts down serving my area so there isn't any 3G coverage and when I do very rarely get on HSDPA I experience data blocks because of the insufficient coverage. Even on 2G there are coverage issues because of these masts so now at least I know where the problem lies.
Has been an issue since February and this isn't rural countryside we are talking about but literally on the edge of the City of London! At least they've halved my bill till they sort it out.
Hello all,
I recently bought the HTC sensation with tmobile service. Im having a problem with the phone connecting to 3g service. It will connect to 4g then in the same location within my house it will drop to 2g. When i have 4g the signal strength is very low around 1 bar. I understand that it would go to a lower speed when it loses the connection but shouldn't it go to 3g before going to 2g? I used to have the HD2 (screen sensor broke) and it always had a strong 3g signal so i do have 3g coverage in my area. When the phone goes down to 2g it has full bars but as you probably know 2g is practically worthless when using the internet.
I talked to tmobile and they said the recent software update fixed some connectivity issues but after installing it, i still have the same problem and now tmobile is saying they dont have any further troubleshooting ideas. So i thought i would turn the the real experts at xda. Thanks in advance for your response!
I'm not even sure if the Sensation has a 3G option?
Nope only 4g and 2g buddy. 3g does happen but no icon for it. I know stupid!!!!!

Yea that is stupid. How hard would it be to add that? Thanks for your help!

Well if you flash a euro rom you get an h for high speed and thats your 4g and a 3 thats 3 g and then an e for 2g i believe.

I guess its really not that big of a deal. I actually turned off the 2g capability so it always gets 4g. sometimes its only 1 bar but thats much better then 5 bars of 2g. I guess if i go outside the 4g range ill have to turn it back on but hopefully they will have an update when i do.
Okay question here,
I have an AAHK unlocked inspire 4g running on t mobile. I was on trickdroid sense 4.1 ROM and started messing with the settings for mobile networks (gms, cdma auto, gms auto, etc.) and somehow started getting the 4g icon and what I would guess is hspa speeds with the phone. Then after a minute or so lost all data and had reboot to reconnect to t mobile and now I have edge only, which is what I thought I would get originally anyways. I had an at&t one x also before I sold it getting 4g speeds here a week ago but I believed that had the 2100 band for t mobile (Or is this incorrect) also so it should've got 4g anyways. Just curious if I in fact have the 1900 bands here from t mobile already, is there anything I can do to keep 4g speeds. Or was it just a coincidence that I suddenly got those speeds?
Just curious because if I can get off edge, this would be worlds faster

There are some threads about t-mobile using 1900 band for 3G, I think thats what you are seeing. If just flashed for a few mins, and went off, most likely, it will be turned on for good soon...
Hi,
I just bought my One S (had a Desire before that) and Im very happy with it, except for the signal and especially the mobile internet. I always had 3+ signal bars in my house, now I have 1 or sometimes none. I use my phone at school to google some stuff but while other devices (Blackberry Bold, S4 mini) can acess the internet I have no connection. Sometimes I have 2 bars and E(DGE) but my browser or Whatsapp wont work.
My friends have always 3G/H and inside the school I never have more than E, but I set my phone to GSM/WCDMA auto.
Sometimes the phone loses the connections even on flat areas like fields.
Is there a way to improve my signal strength? A new Radio ROM?
P.S: My One S has the S4, everything original and no root, S-ON
What software version are you on? And what carrier?
Mine has way better signal than my sisters S3 and it's about equal to my girlfriends Iphone4s, but we're on Telus/Bell network which has HSPA only, no 2g network, so I set it to WCDMA only. I haven't had any problems with reception dropping or data drops at all, but I've heard of some issues with the same phone on the Rogers network which has 2g as well like some of the US carriers.
Software Version: 3.16.401.9
HTC SDK API: 4.63
Baseband: 1.15.50.05.29_10.30.50.08L
Thats all I found under Software...
Im from Germany and I dont know if youre familiar with the carriers here, but I use congstar therefore the D1-network of the german Telekom which is pretty good here. Look like Im on the newest RadioROM, so how to improve my connection?
Looks like I'm on an older radio starts with 1.11 instead of 1.15. Does your network have regular gsm?
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
I can use EDGE when setting my phone to GSM only, but I have not more than 2 bars even outdoors...on WCDMA only I have none or 1 bar outdoor, in buildings: no connection. So yes, I have GSM and WCDMA.
Well I don't know, you could try rooting and flashing a different radio, and some build.prop tweaks that affect the connection, but there is no guarantee that will fix it. Is it still under warranty? Rooting may be risky if you're still under warranty. Could try talking to your carrier and see if they can do anything.
