Best tethering option for a rooted samsumg captivate?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
Download non-US version of Samsung driver and then connect your phone via USB to PC. Select PC Internet for the USB setting on your phone and you're tethered. US verison of Samsung driver does not work.
android Wi-fi Tether is what I use.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
The US captivate version does not have a wired tehering capability. (no modem). I use wireless-tethering available off of a google code project... The latest expirimental works great for me! Pm me and I will send links and post here when I am home.

Wrong. See my post above. It is just a driver trick.

i was using PDAnet and recent (finally) installed Samsung's Kies on my laptop so i could check for firmware updates,
Kies has tethering as an option, and oddly, my laptop seems to browse at faster speeds than with PDAnet

Wi-fi is easiest option, otherwise you can download for 32bit this driver for USB tether: http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDo...SB-Driver-for-Windows-x86-Download-96692.html
64 bit driver also found on softpedia.

Linux user confused.
I run linux on my laptops, HP i7 and Acer Ferrari. Had plugged in Samsung Captivate via USB for file transfer, networking detected phone and connected (first time I wasn't aware networking had used usb0 (phone) instead of my WiFi connection; eating up my 3G data). Tried later on my Acer Ferrari at work; connects within a few seconds of being plugged in. I don't have PDAnet or any other special USB program installed.

I used the wonder and did eventually get to working tether but it doesn't give me option to install nonmarket apps directly from the phone; I have to dl them to the PC and install.
I tried to set it up with several different ways but no others seemed to work.
What suggestions do u have for most simple unblocking so installs can happen right at phone?
Thanx for the help! It was fun to get this far!

It's a known issue. Most ppl experience of battery pulling.
Besides the fact that it is very difficult to setup security (WEP???) and effectively block others, mostly brain dead iphones, to automatically connect to your phone, it is not really not worth the trouble. I fired up this Android Tethering on a busy Airport and immediately got more than dozen iPhone connected to it. The build-in access control can control who has the access to the internet but incapable of kick the ofenders off your phone. Battery was dead in less than 30 minutes.
There is now a new solution that enables native wireless AP (WPA2 capable) in addition to the USB tethering (still my favorite) in Captivate Android Development forum. Unfortunately you have to flash to a custom kernel in order to restore the wireless AP capability that was stripped off by request of AT&T.
so no other option for wifi tethering besides the custom kernel huh?
I really want to tether my iPad to it to show off to my friends at work

I'm using wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre7.apk and have NEVER had an issue with my phone locking up. I wonder if people are forgetting to turn off WiFi and bluetooth on their phones, which may interfere with the tethering process.
As to encryption, setting it up was very simple and I've never had anyone else leeching off of my wireless.
so I uninstalled my version, which I tried pre5, and pre8, none worked. Uninstalled, rebooted phone, installed pre7, didn't work, uninstalled ATM rebooted phone, then turned it back on and it works.. Weird...

the custom kernel isn't as bad as it sounds (all it does is to uncommented a few lines in the init.rc). But it does require Odin to flash it which is a hassle or error prone.

Nope. I used pre8 and don't have wifi or BT on. It crashed once. And refuse to work many times. And I have reboot the phone inorder to completely shut off the tethering (the adhoc network is still visible even if you turn off the tethering).
I got the wireless tether app and when I use it, no device can find it. I press start tethering and nothing is happening, it doesnt show up on any device wifi like my iphone and my laptop. Any ideas?
I am now using pre8. I went into the settings and set up my own SSID and security. If you haven't done that, I would start there. I also had to reboot my phone after my first install as the phone locked up on me.
Sometimes I do have issues with getting my laptop to connect properly. It will get an IP address, but not be able to connect to the internet because it doesn't get assigned a gateway.
Going into Access Control and then doing a 'Reload Client List' when this happens cures the problem.
I just downloaded cognition v2.1.7 (unhelpfuls kernel) from Eclair stock. I now have the mobile ap option in my wireless folder but when I click it the ap is "not responding". I am very happy with everything so far except this one issue. Is there something I have not done like a setting change or is this an outright problem with my download? Do I need to download a wireless tether ap in addition to the new rom? Also wanna give mad kudo's to designgears. My speed and over all use of the phone now is nothing short of incredible. Will be donating soon and suggest all who use do the same. Designgears you rock!
unhelpful 1.7 or 1.6? try 1.6 - afaik 1.7 has some bugs with init.d scripts
Ok if I download 1.6 will I lose all my info? Ap's phonebook etc.?
Will I lose all info if I flash 1.6? Should I do this on a full battery and could that have been a problem on first flash?j
just disable lag fix prior to flashing. And always do backup
First and foremost, thank you very much for your advice. Where can I find the lag fix? I think voodoo installed with 2.1.7 but I have no app icon for it. I have everything backed up on titanium ( I asked that before thinking because of a prior problem) but thanks also for the reminder.

You should have the lagfix by default. You heard the robot voice the first time you booted after installing 2.1.7, right? To disable the lagfix, 1.Create an extension-less file or a folder name "disable-lagfix" in /sdcard/Voodoo 2.Reboot.
If you're new to cognition, you should read the FAQ.
As far as your problem with mobilAP, I am running 2.1.6 with Atinms kernel, so I don't know if there is a problem with 2.1.7, but I think it should work correctly. When you click the AP Mobile Settings item in Wireless and Network, you should get a screen with a check box to turn on Mobile AP, plus some info. When you turn Mobile AP on, you get a screen with directions, including a passcode.
Maybe you should try reinstalling 2.1.7, or alternatively try 2.1.6.
Yeah, I did, thought bout that a second after the last post. I am going to try .6, but when I do, do I flash over .7 or do I need to reflash stock and then download? I'm assuming if you guys are saying disable voodoo then there is no need to flash stock, just wanna make sure. I already have a Blackberry paper weight I don't need a 500 dollar captivate one beside it too lol.

I used this link and downloaded 2.0.5 pre 15.apk this past weekend. Once I installed on my phone it worked right away. I did not have to set anything. Might be a bad download. You can try getting it from the market. Next time you have wifi access, turn on airplane mode, then turn on wifi. Market search for wifi tether. Get the one that has the green wifi bars as the app symbol.

Wow I didn't think I'd be this much of a pain to you folks trying to get this working. Thanks for replying again & again!
Installed "Wireless Tethering" free app from marketplace, and it just "FC" fails when I run it. It DOES have SU privs, confirmed.
When I go to App Settings, i see I have Wireless Tether ver 23 installed, and I have an option to "uninstall updates".
2 prereqs listed in Market:
1 Rooted (yes, I am rootted)
2 Netfilter-enabled kernel (I have absolutely no idea. I'm Captivate stock, 1-click rooted, and UTBV0.2.
Can anyone tell me how to tell if I have a netfilter-enabled kernel, or how to get one?
Should I Uninstall Updates, and Reinstall?
I know for sure pre8 works on a stock captivate.

The stock tethering app works fine for me
Why wouldn't you use the built in hotspot? It works great.
You just need to use the built in hotspot, under wireless settings. You have the same features, can change the ssid, and password encrypt it. I'm using it right now.

use the built-in tether app. To make it really easy add it to a PowerControl widget (add widget to screen, select "Portable WiFi Hotspot" from the list of options).
If you don't want to use it, the other best one (in my experience) is called something like "Wireless Tether for Root Users"
Just use the built-in option under wireless settings...
Or check THIS page

Not lame for asking a question. You could have posted this in the development section.
Sweet, looks like restarting helped, my 4G speeds still sucks though in this area, i restarted and threw 4G and tethering on and tested my speed on my ipod touch and got .32Mbps/.21Mpbs and my battery was draining 1% per minute, lol.

On the ICS leak, it still has the entitlement check for hotspot feature
Normally, you would freeze or delete the tethering manager apk in titanium, or use MYSQLite app to disable the entitlement check in the settings apk...but neither of those things are present in the ICS leak

This should be easy, probably just a change in the filename for the manager apk
I tried freezing the wifi sharing manager and the TetheringProvision, but it either crashed the settings apk or didnt have an effect.

There is still an apk present in the /system/app folder called tetheringmanager.apk, saw it when I was deodexing, maybe it just has a new name.
Nevermind, freezing it doesn't help the situation.

Hrm, strange....usually titanium picks up on this kind of thing.
I'm going to try the 14 panel someone suggested.
It seems to me that where before it used tetheringmanager.apk to check for the lack of provision if it was NOT available, something in the framework is now saying its not available unless tethering manager says so.

mobile hotspot worked for me
In the UltraCfg app i tried setting it to Tethering Always ON. It asked for a restart for the change to take effect, but it locked up my phone. After pulling the battery and starting up the phone i tried to turn on the mobile hotspot. While it was trying to verify the tethering plan the blue hot spot symbol came on, so i just hit cancel. I was able to connect a device with no problems. USB tethering worked the same way, just cancel when it tried to do its verification. I'm currently tethering right now.

No need to hit cancel. Just hit home. This absolutely works. I got wifi tethering for root users working too, but I like working with stock features.
Follow this guide, bottom of page 3. Even though UltraCfg already appears to have set tethering always on, you need to set it again. Reboot.

So the unlocking of the boot loader was simple with Motorola's instructions on their website. Now all I need to figure out how to do is fix the USB tethering so it simply works...
Anyone know how to do this yet? I know there are programs that you can install/use but I don't want to use those.
Not sure if it has the option to do that out of box or not but if it does and its not working, I remember someone saying it is picky with what USB cable you use.
Or by programs you mean not installing programs on the PC? and not by apps?
I know it doesn't out of the box. Just trying to find a fix for it.

It is hard to say as it varies per phone, try going to google play and searching for usb tether and try a few. If none work, in WORST case you can make a Proxy on your phone and then route your internet through the proxy on your browser. Though any reason why Wifi/Bluetooth is not an option?
Tried some of the apps on the market, none are working. PdaNet won't even install. Usb is preferred, wifi or bluetooth would be fine for now. How do you setup the proxy? Ive never done that on a phone yet.

BTW how is its reception in low signal areas,

I just went from my Epic 4G... The Photon Q has a lot better signal strength than the Epic. PdaNet is working great. I downloaded it from here: http://www.apkfullapps.com/2012/03/pdanet-pro-v350-apk-app.html I selected rapid gator, it comes as p350.zip and contains the apk for the phone, and both 32 & 64 bit versions of the computer app needed.
You will need to buy a license for it to be able to visit https sites. Here is their site:
http://junefabrics.com
The GPS seems to be working great. I've had no issues with it yet so far. Always seems to be accurate, and fast at getting the original location. I'm hoping that soon enough I won't have to use PdaNet to tether anymore now that motorola released the kernal source. That makes it a lot easier for our devs to get new roms and fixes out for it
after rooting with shabby's cwm, I tried Wi-Fi tether, but I couldn't connect to the hotspot. I opened an issue with the Google project

My USB tethering works right out of the box. I just hooked it up to my PC, let the included Motorola software install the relevant drivers and turned on the option in the settings. Bam, had my desktop online. It takes it a few moments to connect and sometimes you have to play with the setting or unplug it/plug it back in etc. before it works. I sometimes get a message that my plan may not support tethering, but that always goes away if I just poke at the setting a couple more times. Patience seems to be the key. Sometimes it takes a little while for the network to be identified by Win7-64, which is what I am using.
I'll try WiFi hotspot later and see if my bridge can connect to it ...
Infrastructure Wifi Tether
I have found that with my Photon Q, after I unlocked it and rooted, I downloaded the newest "Wifi Tether For Root Users" off the Play Store and out of the box it worked.....as ad-hoc....I have found that if you go into the settings of Wifi Tether and hit "Change Device-Profile" and choose "Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)" then choose "Change Setup-Method" and hit "Netd (master)" then setup the Wifi Tether to your liking it will work without a problem on infrastructure.
