USB Tether with rooted Hero?

I still can't get this to work. Unfortunately at my work, we have some corporate policy that keeps me from accessing my wireless tethering connection the tether app creates in modaco's 1.1 rom. Doubt it's anything with the app, but rather I just can't connect to "that type" of connection.
So, that leaves me with USB tethering. No problem at all! But, how do I do it? I'm still getting error 67 codes even though I've got root access. Thanks for help in advance!!

I haven't tested this but these commands (entered either through adb or a terminal emulator on the phone) should get you up and running with USB tethering (make sure you have the drivers installed on your computer from HTC Sync).

/system/bin/netsharing net on
echo 4 > /sys/devices/platform/msm_hsusb/usb_function_switch
To turn it off just go into your wireless controls and disable wireless sharing to reset everything.

The easiest way to achieve WORKING WiFi tether is with MoDaCo 1.1. If you've already rooted, you should have used nandroid to create and restore (to make sure your backup works!) a backup. The app "Quick Boot" on the market is the easiest way for you to reboot into recovery mode without having to use adb. If you have a working backup, then you should really try out the ROM, as you can always revert back if something goes wrong! Essentailly, ya got nothing to lose!
P.S. I posted this using Wifi Tether App with MoDaCo Rom 1.1! AWESOME!

I tried this from a shell last night, and it DID turn on my mobile connection sharing, but I still got error 67's, no differently than if I would have checked the check box in wireless settings. So, it appears this is no dice.

I also have MoDaCo 1.1 and while I believe that the wifi tethering DOES work, my work laptop blocks the wireless connection, possibly because it sees it as a peer to peer maybe. In any case, I couldn't tether wirelessly before either in Vista with Windows Mobile either, had to use the USB cable. In all honestly, I like that more anyway because it charges the phone at the same time.
So, anyone that is rooted with a Sprint Hero, can you tether with USB without 67 errors? Thanks in advance!

I prefer USB tether to WiFi tether for a couple reasons.
First, it uses less power, so even if your phone is plugged in via USB, it will charge faster.
*EDIT* So, after using the WiFi tether app with my phone plugged in via USB and my laptop plugged in, my phone was LOSING battery, albeit at a slower rate.
Second, I used to get lower ping times with my phones tethered via USB when I had a Blackberry and a Palm Pre (usually 90-130 ms) With the WiFi tether, I seem to be getting 150-230 ms ping times.
Third (and I don't know if this is the same for everyone else, but) I'm getting only 0.8-1.2 mbps down speeds and only 0.2-0.5 mbps up speeds.
So yeah, if people would still keep looking for a mobile network sharing exploit, I'd greatly appreciate it

Only way I know of tethering with usb is to use tetherbot and that isn't true tethering as it uses a SOCKS proxy and you have to have the SDK on the computer. Not to mention you'll be stuck with Firefox unless you can configure the proxy for other programs. There was some other workaround posted on here though.
Just because you've rooted doesn't mean it removes Sprint's system of how people tether. They use a two-NAI system. 1st NAI = your normal data username and password. 2nd NAI = Your PAM (Phone-As-Modem) password which is issued when people have that add-on on their plan, which can't be added to the Everything Data plans.

The point the original poster was making is that WiFi tether is not an option for them. Since I'm in the same boat a USB Tether option (if it was ever discovered) would be useful. I don't think it's a ridiculous question to ask if there was a way to do it. I've USB Tethered with my iPhone and Nokia E71 without a problem.
Like the original poster my corporate laptop's security policy does not allow me to connect to an Ad-Hoc network, like the one created through WiFi tether.

This app is the wired version of the Wireless tether that comes installed on the MoDaCo rom.
I've been following this app recently, and have it installed on the Hero, but of course since it was ported for the G1 only, it doesn't work on our Hero. It's interesting because it was created with pieces from the Hero in the first place. It says on the site that it will tell you that you do not have the proper kernel installed if that requirement isn't met, and I'm NOT receiving that message.
In fact, everything seems to go just fine when I launch the app, and allow root access. It's right after that where I get a FC as the app is trying to access the system settings menu.
Any smarties out there that would care to take a stab at how we could get this working for both the GSM and CDMA Hero?

Why not use PdaNet it seems to work fine on my laptop. I do have a question on tethering however either wireless or usb. Is it ok to do this on a Sprint everything data plan or do I have to upgrade to something else. If I tether without upgrading will I see a large charge on my bill? I do not use it much if ever but was just wondering if this would effect my bill.

If PDANet wasn't 30 bucks, I'd gladly consider it. However, I've been tethering over USB with all of my Sprint phones for goodness knows how long, with no problems.
With your everything data plan, you shouldn't see any problems at all. The wired tether app basically just starts an adhoc wireless connection, and then funnels through your data connection to the laptop connected to it. To the data line, and to Sprint, it's no different than an app using data.
In essence, this is how ANY wired USB app should eventually work from a tethering standpoint. Yes, Sprint uses a two tiered NAI system to control data and PAM. However, the trick ALWAYS has been to have the phone not report/act that it's using PAM, rather just turn on mobile sharing and funnel through the internet connection. This is how it worked with Windows Mobile phones too, and eventually will be the same with our Hero. It will have to eventually be done on the Application level, rather than using mobile connection sharing through settings. When this is activated, the Hero attempts to use the PAM settings. We'll either have to remove this somehow, or do it all through the app itself. It will have to be a "middle man" of sorts, isolating the incoming data line, and then acting as a liaison to push it through the USB to the laptop.
That's how I understand it in my head, anyway

So, can you help clarify your workflow for using it? Are you running it from an ADB Shell on your laptop, or are you launching it from a terminal emulator on your Hero? Also, do you have any wireless settings modified (such as hybrid vs. 1x only) or do you have the mobile network turned off first?
Or, are you more simply just running this from a shell while everything is up and running as normal?

FYI, you can use PdaNet for free WITHOUT paying for it. You only are required to pay for it for any use other than HTTP://. FTP use isn't really a good idea anyway because if Sprint see's you're tethering too much data, they'll know you're tethering and cut you.

Not necessarily. I was tethering daily at one point and they never said a word. This includes browsing and downloading 1gb+ torrents.

This is 99% based on "Wireless Tether for Root Users" and might work. I've never tested it on a hero. I have it running on a G1 and Magic ... both with a patched kernel - these patches came from Zinx Verituse and the hero-kernel was base for this port.
No idea if it really works ... but you could try.

Hi harry, I've unfortunately not had this work quite yet, I get a force close from the system settings this app is trying to access. My guess is that the kernel isn't patched for it. We might have to request this in future CDMA Hero roms. Thanks!

I got it for free as well.

I can confirm that the USB tether using the command line works for me. I'm getting 1.28Mb/s down and 0.48Mb/s up.

Wireless Tether

Hey guys, I have not seen a post about this yet so I figured I'd ask. I just rooted and was able to remove ATT bloatware using titanium backup. I would also like to add a wireless tethering app so that I can use my phone as a wireless modem. I have this app installed on my sprint htc hero (also rooted). I searched the market (where I found it on my hero) but I assume ATT blocks this somehow. Has anyone tried to wirelessly tether yet? If so, were you successful?

I was just browsing over on the vibrant forums and they have no luck yet. They were able to get the apps to install fine, but the ssid would not broadcast. They are still seeking a solution... Hopefully us ATT users want this as bad as I do

the whole reason I got this phone was because of the community that seems to be making things happen faster than any of the iphone 4 development! I'm excited to see what they can do with the wireless tethering.

It seems to be somthing AT&T is doing. Wireless Tether will not work on the Aria right now either.

Hmmm interesting. I hope there are more developers for the captivate vs the aria.

Im sure we'll see some of the AT&T Nexus one Devs migrate on over. I mean who doesn't want a 4inch super AMOLED and Hummingbird CPU to play with. Not to mention the GPU performance pretty much double's any other Android on the market as of now.
I put my unlimited data iPad sim in my Nexus One to tether with so I'll be ok for now anyway.

I just sideloaded android wifi tether on my Captivate, and it does not work. It appears to work, but my Mac doesn't see to network. I tried the 2.0.5 beta as well as 2.0.2. Hope someone finds a fix soon, or I might have to go back to my iPhone 4 and add to supported tethering. Ouch!

I'm pretty sure it's something in the kernel...a custom rom might help...maybe if it uses a kernel from another S device that has the same hardware.

Its not wifi tethering but I've got pdanet working over the usb cord and bluetooth. Not quite as good but if you need something to use while you wait for someone to figure the wifi out it should do the trick.

Doesn't the Captivate have built in tethering though? And couldn't you just use that?...

USB Tethering working on Mac via PdaNet.
I have installed PdaNet on my Captivate to use to tether my Mac (10.6.4). I had to ADB the PdaNet.apk, because it wouldn't install being a non market app. I installed the server application on the Mac. Works like a charm. Latency is kinda high though ~500ms.
Used command "install" instead of "push" to make it install, as it failed when using "push".
"$ /Volumes/HDD/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/adb install /Volumes/HDD/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/PdaNet.apk" HIT ENTER
Of course my SDK is located in my Downloads folder, so all i did was Drag, and Drop the folders into Terminal. I put the .apk into the same folder before I used the "install" command.

Apparently at&t forgot to block the built in USB tethering option of the phone.
If you have all the drivers installed from here you can tether via USB.
1) go to settings >applications > development > make sure nothing is selected there.
2) go to settings > applications > USB Settings > select PC internet.
Connect the phone.
You might need to go into your device manager on the laptop to make sure you are not required to install additional drivers.
If you do > install the missing drivers and you are online.
If you dont > you should be online
Typing this from my USB tethered laptop now.
Also i noticed that Barnacle Wifi Tether is working but is not stable.
It will create a connection for a short time and then crash.

Not working here either.

We need kernel sourcess to enable NEtFilter on the kernel, by enabling this module, wifi thethering should work.

Yes you need custom kernel, which has been standard on most if not all custom roms for awhile now.

Which windows are you using? I tried this on 7 and would not work. Seems drivers only support xp and vista....

[Q] Ready to Return My Transformer - Apps, Wifi Issues

OK so I have had my Transformer for 2 days now and so far it has been little more than a paper weight. I have not been able to download a single app from the market. I've tried everything suggested here (cancel/restart, reboot, etc) with no luck. I have not been able to even update Google Maps or install Flash Player, literally I have not been able to install anything. I've tried stock and rooted plus I cannot get any version of Prime to install (finally got the root and CWM installed). Lastly, since this is a Wifi only device it is important to wireless tether with my cellphone. Two days and I still cannot get it to work, will not even find the device. Only 2 days of ownership and I am completely frustrated with this thing. I really like and want the micro SD capabilities but if I can't resolve this ASAP it will need to go back to the store.
Anyone have any suggestions on what all I can try? Please help!

Sorry, I'm a little busy to look for the direct links.
Just look-for the vanilla NVFlash then add the Prime 1.5 (nvflash version). Dump them together into a folder then run the batch file. Simple !
I just helped two co-workers with their brand-new TFs getting rooted this way.
Maybe 5-10 minutes top.
Make sure you unzip the downloaded Prime file (it becomes 4 files). Read the NVFLASH post and have the USB driver ready.

You don’t have to root or flash with a custom rom to get the basic stuff like Wi-Fi. Everything works out of the box as advertised. If something doesn't then either you are doing something wrong or there is a fault with your device. Did you try connecting to a normal Wireless Router? Honeycomb can not see some types of adhoc networks without installing a patch (i.e created by Windows, this may be applicable to some phones too, however it worked fine with My Galaxy S).

There is a nvflash package w/stock-rom available. Just double-click download.bat then wait a few minutes.

Hi, sometime the problem is in the market. not the device itself. I got similar experience with my HTC device. I've installed many ROMs but the market always screwed. So what I did was, just reset your device, when it asks the Google account, type in your email like this: [email protected] instead of just blablabla or [email protected]

I guess your phone is offering up an adhoc connection, which Android doesn't support out of the box. It should work fine with phones that offer up a true infrastructure hotspot. Personally, I think adhoc networks should die a horrible death, but I appreciate their necessity if that's all your phone can do.
Search for adhoc and you should find a solution to this issue. You can also try PDAnet (tablet) too.

Ad hoc issue appears to be most relevant.
Market download issues =software issues not hardware. If you do not have any other wifi option then go to McDonald's or Starbucks and try it on their wifi.

Mine connects fine if the SSID is shown, but once I hide the SSID it said out of range.
My EVO 3D, iPod, TV all work with it hidden.
Does someone know if you can setup the TF to connect with hidden SSID?

Thanks for the advice all. I don't have a custom ROM on it yet, just rooted. I can't get the zips to work. Says cannot open (bad). Will try re-downloading for a 5th time and see how goes it. I did figure out the wifi issue on my phone - it was ad hoc as stated and it recognizes my phone now but still won't download apps (says it's downloading but never does). Tried cancelling and restarting several times as well as factory resetting the device. Does the same thing when I connect to my home network as well.

My Wifi network is hidden and I had no issue connecting my TF.
What type of router and what settings does it have?
I am using a NetGear WNDR3700 (802.11-g,n). The TF connects to the 2.4 GHz section over 802.11n.

Is it wise to be playing with recovery images and custom ROMS, if you can't get basic market functionality working?
Clearly before changing your TF from stock, get the market working, this is almost certainly a probem with your Wifi router...
The only problem I am aware of with the Transformers Wifi, is sometimes it does not getting a DHCP address when coming back from sleep (use Static IP), the TW release has this fixed, but the WW does not for some reason, i'm guessing they know 3.2 is incoming soon.

Follow these steps to get the market working:
I don't exactly know what the problem is, but I've had it on a couple of phones before. I do NOT have a googlemail account, so that wasn't the problem.
I deleted all cache/data from the following programs: Market, MarketUpdater, Downloads, Download manager, googleapps (anything that seems relevant)
now first go on a computer, open your gmail via gmail.com, send a mail, edit some contacts, just make sure you do something! Now reboot your eee pad, accept the market policies and see if it works....
If this doesn't fix it, then I have no options left

Update: I ultimately returned my TF (I had already suspected that I didn't receive a new device due to other issues and packaging). I received the new TF yesterday (A+ to Amazon.com). The new TF was 1000x better. Loaded right up, connected, market apps loaded easily, quickly and on the first try. All in all I am pleased. And the root and ROM installs worked flawlessly. Actually enjoying my TF now. Thanks all for the advice and help!

All the WiFi at my work are hidden and there at least 8 people with TFs here. Mostly Prime but some stock. None of us EVER had problem with hidden SSID.
At home my two WiFi are hidden. No problem.

I am running a Belkin N750DB, (WPA2 encryption)
Every other thing in my house works fine, hidden. I changed from a ASUS 300N router that was running same encryption WPA2 with no problem on the TF. I have check and doubled checked settings.

I also had a issue with the wifi connection on my first unit. Its would pause/stall all the time in the interent browser and market would give me connection error messages. Now Im on my third one and it has a bright stop on the screen but the internet works great.

So the unlocking of the boot loader was simple with Motorola's instructions on their website. Now all I need to figure out how to do is fix the USB tethering so it simply works...
Anyone know how to do this yet? I know there are programs that you can install/use but I don't want to use those.

Not sure if it has the option to do that out of box or not but if it does and its not working, I remember someone saying it is picky with what USB cable you use.
Or by programs you mean not installing programs on the PC? and not by apps?

I know it doesn't out of the box. Just trying to find a fix for it.

It is hard to say as it varies per phone, try going to google play and searching for usb tether and try a few. If none work, in WORST case you can make a Proxy on your phone and then route your internet through the proxy on your browser. Though any reason why Wifi/Bluetooth is not an option?

Tried some of the apps on the market, none are working. PdaNet won't even install. Usb is preferred, wifi or bluetooth would be fine for now. How do you setup the proxy? Ive never done that on a phone yet.

If wifi/bluetooth is an option try FoxFi. If that doesn't work,ill instruct you how to do the proxy thing.

Tried FoxFi and it says its not supported by my carrier (sprint) so it doesnt let me install. Same thing with pdanet

you mean doesn't let you install from sprint market? or doesn't work when you open it? you can download the apk directly on the developers site or download it on Amazon appstore.

App market doesn't allow the download. I'm going to try to find the apk for pdanet, i do have the license for the full version of that. All that i have been able to download just haven't worked. Ill let ya know what i can figure out.

Okay... i got PDA Net working. Had to download the apk elsewhere other than the market where its not allowed. That allows usb, bt, and wifi. I guess this will work for now until some devs get some fixes out for the new photon Can't be driving around the country without internet for my laptop...

This is why I just use Amazon Appstore, no silly carrier locking. And it keeps the locked apps updated.

BTW how is its reception in low signal areas,
and does its GPS work reasonably well?

GPS dies within 10min, it often loses Sprint carrier

I just went from my Epic 4G... The Photon Q has a lot better signal strength than the Epic. PdaNet is working great. I downloaded it from here: http://www.apkfullapps.com/2012/03/pdanet-pro-v350-apk-app.html I selected rapid gator, it comes as p350.zip and contains the apk for the phone, and both 32 & 64 bit versions of the computer app needed.
You will need to buy a license for it to be able to visit https sites. Here is their site:

The GPS seems to be working great. I've had no issues with it yet so far. Always seems to be accurate, and fast at getting the original location. I'm hoping that soon enough I won't have to use PdaNet to tether anymore now that motorola released the kernal source. That makes it a lot easier for our devs to get new roms and fixes out for it

after rooting with shabby's cwm, I tried Wi-Fi tether, but I couldn't connect to the hotspot. I opened an issue with the Google project

My USB tethering works right out of the box. I just hooked it up to my PC, let the included Motorola software install the relevant drivers and turned on the option in the settings. Bam, had my desktop online. It takes it a few moments to connect and sometimes you have to play with the setting or unplug it/plug it back in etc. before it works. I sometimes get a message that my plan may not support tethering, but that always goes away if I just poke at the setting a couple more times. Patience seems to be the key. Sometimes it takes a little while for the network to be identified by Win7-64, which is what I am using.
I'll try WiFi hotspot later and see if my bridge can connect to it ...

Infrastructure Wifi Tether
I have found that with my Photon Q, after I unlocked it and rooted, I downloaded the newest "Wifi Tether For Root Users" off the Play Store and out of the box it worked.....as ad-hoc....I have found that if you go into the settings of Wifi Tether and hit "Change Device-Profile" and choose "Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)" then choose "Change Setup-Method" and hit "Netd (master)" then setup the Wifi Tether to your liking it will work without a problem on infrastructure.

Thanks for the link! Got it up and working and was able to verify that I can connect to work and run apps from Citrix while talking on the phone, SVDO for the win! Now I'm ready for the next time I lose cable at home and I need to work.

Installed the Wifi Tether and installed using zrmxp95's directions. I can connect to the network with my ipad, however the phone only only recieves about 4kb of data and then the webpage never loads. I can hit refresh on the ipad, and it will load another 4kb and do the same thing.

TF300T Tethering Hell: USB, WiFi, Take your pick...

Hey guys If I am in the wrong place, please let me know. I got my TF300T just a little while ago and am now trying to use it as a my main computer. That requires me to able to connect to the net on it. It works just fine when I am connected to a regular WiFi network. However, I have no Internet connection at home except for my Sprint Motorola Photon Q, which I had been using tethered over USB to my PC to get the PC online. That worked fine. But this past month, I lost my job and needed to sell the PC, so all I have left is the TF300T. I was sure it'd work fine since I got BT tethering to work fine in the past with that phone. However, I was just experimenting at that point. Now, I see it's a little more ... complicated:
I set my Photon Q to act as a WiFi hotspot using PDANet+ a.k.a. FoxFi. Creating a WiFi hotspot, I can see it on the TF300T. Whether I enter the right PSK2 key or don't use encryption at all, connecting is impossible. It will "Authenticate...." after a minute or so and then try to get an IP via DHCP. Then it will "work" a long time and then drop the connection and try again. This is with the phone an inch away. I found it had a lot of trouble just getting an IP, so I tried setting it up with a static IP. I found out that PDAnet+ seems to default to 192.168.43.111 and the gateway is presumably 192.168.43.1. I tried some other things like .100 without luck. It WILL connect but the WiFi strength indicator in the bar stays gray. It shows up and down arrows as though there's activity, and Excellent strength, but won't actually work in any apps, incl. the default Android browser. Also tried pinging the host phone using the terminal only to get Destination Host Unreachable errors.
I then tried Bluetooth tethering. It will connect and works at a decent rate. But, the only programs that work are web browsers! IM clients, Skype, Google Play, Maps, Gmail, nothing else can connect. Android is convinced I am not online at all, yet I can browse web pages at full speed, which I am doing right now. IIRC PdaNet uses some bizarro proxy setup but they tell you on their site to "configure the proxy settings" and give you none of the details like IP or port! How useful. So, this does me little good. It's horribly crippled.
I tried numerous other WiFi tether apps, most of which hard crash the Photon Q so it reboots entirely the moment it turns on the hotspot. Barnacle and one of the WiFi tether apps (1-click? I've tried so many I can barely remember...) will launch, I can see it on the TF300T, but when I try to connect it says "ANDROIDTETHER or whatever the SSID is, Saved". No matter how many times you choose Connect or Forget, then Connect again, nothing. Gets stuck at "Saved."
I'd try connecting the phone via USB via the TF300T dock but I have searched heavily and cannot find any way to do it. Do I have any options at all?

I'm tethering Internet from my SGS 1 with 4.2.2 rom with no problem at all. I think you have problem with wifi settings.
Try to set both phone and tab wifi to correct region. If you have phone set to USA and tab to Europe it won't work. You'll find it under Wireless-advanced if you have customised roms, for stock I don't know how to set it. Haven't have stock roms for ages.
About proxy, basic proxy settings in Android works only for browser, so you will need something like proxydroid on your client. I'm using it and for me it is working. For settings, check your phone settings-mobile networks-access points and copy them from there, or call your ISP and ask them for settings.
Hope this helps.

WiFi tether for root users. Is the best thing ever. If you aren't rooted. Root your phone. Also, is there a cm ROM available for your phone? If so, switch. Then use it's default tethering. Your phone is definitely the culprit here.

Unfortunately no CM ROM exists for that phone. It is rooted. I tried wifi tether for root-- played with all the settings.... it will turn on and the SSID shows up on the TF300T .. but if you try to connect it just says "Saved." Even though it also says Signal quality is "Excellent"...
I don't get it at all.

Try different profiles. I tried my EVO LTE last night for 2 hrs. Tried all generic settings. I ended up switching it to sg3 profile same chipset as mine. Worked fine after that.

Yep exactly what kaos said. I had that issue with my HD2 doing exactly what you said. Would "save" but never connect. I ended up using something like the nexus profile or something.

Great suggestions guys! I seem to be making some progress. I can now "connect" and get an IP, but the "wifi signal" bar thingy in the lower-right stays gray, not blue like it usually is when on working WiFi, and apps still cannot get to the net, which I assume is what the gray means (network connection but no internet connection). I will have to go down the list and try every possible configuation, I suppose. Yikes! I'll keep at it...

Im using ProxyDroid. But you need to have rom with root and iptables enabled. Official CM10.1 doesn't have it, unofficial from Surdu_petru does.
