Photon Q 4G LTE, USB/WiFi Tether, Anyone? - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

So the unlocking of the boot loader was simple with Motorola's instructions on their website. Now all I need to figure out how to do is fix the USB tethering so it simply works...
Anyone know how to do this yet? I know there are programs that you can install/use but I don't want to use those.

Not sure if it has the option to do that out of box or not but if it does and its not working, I remember someone saying it is picky with what USB cable you use.
Or by programs you mean not installing programs on the PC? and not by apps?

I know it doesn't out of the box. Just trying to find a fix for it.

It is hard to say as it varies per phone, try going to google play and searching for usb tether and try a few. If none work, in WORST case you can make a Proxy on your phone and then route your internet through the proxy on your browser. Though any reason why Wifi/Bluetooth is not an option?

Tried some of the apps on the market, none are working. PdaNet won't even install. Usb is preferred, wifi or bluetooth would be fine for now. How do you setup the proxy? Ive never done that on a phone yet.

If wifi/bluetooth is an option try FoxFi. If that doesn't work, ill instruct you how to do the proxy thing.

Tried FoxFi and it says its not supported by my carrier (sprint) so it doesnt let me install. Same thing with pdanet

you mean doesn't let you install from sprint market? or doesn't work when you open it? you can download the apk directly on the developers site or download it on Amazon appstore.

App market doesn't allow the download. I'm going to try to find the apk for pdanet, i do have the license for the full version of that. All that i have been able to download just haven't worked. Ill let ya know what i can figure out.

Okay... i got PDA Net working. Had to download the apk elsewhere other than the market where its not allowed. That allows usb, bt, and wifi. I guess this will work for now until some devs get some fixes out for the new photon Can't be driving around the country without internet for my laptop...

This is why I just use Amazon Appstore, no silly carrier locking. And it keeps the locked apps updated.

Any results yet? I'll buy this phone or not depending on whether PdaNet can work.
BTW how is its reception in low signal areas,
and does its GPS work reasonably well?

I just went from my Epic 4G... The Photon Q has a lot better signal strength than the Epic. PdaNet is working great. I downloaded it from here: http://www.apkfullapps.com/2012/03/pdanet-pro-v350-apk-app.html I selected rapid gator, it comes as p350.zip and contains the apk for the phone, and both 32 & 64 bit versions of the computer app needed.
You will need to buy a license for it to be able to visit https sites. Here is their site:
http://junefabrics.com
The GPS seems to be working great. I've had no issues with it yet so far. Always seems to be accurate, and fast at getting the original location. I'm hoping that soon enough I won't have to use PdaNet to tether anymore now that motorola released the kernal source. That makes it a lot easier for our devs to get new roms and fixes out for it

after rooting with shabby's cwm, I tried Wi-Fi tether, but I couldn't connect to the hotspot. I opened an issue with the Google project
Sent from my CM9 Epic 4g Touch using Forum Runner

My USB tethering works right out of the box. I just hooked it up to my PC, let the included Motorola software install the relevant drivers and turned on the option in the settings. Bam, had my desktop online. It takes it a few moments to connect and sometimes you have to play with the setting or unplug it/plug it back in etc. before it works. I sometimes get a message that my plan may not support tethering, but that always goes away if I just poke at the setting a couple more times. Patience seems to be the key. Sometimes it takes a little while for the network to be identified by Win7-64, which is what I am using.
I'll try WiFi hotspot later and see if my bridge can connect to it ...

Infrastructure Wifi Tether
I have found that with my Photon Q, after I unlocked it and rooted, I downloaded the newest "Wifi Tether For Root Users" off the Play Store and out of the box it worked.....as ad-hoc....I have found that if you go into the settings of Wifi Tether and hit "Change Device-Profile" and choose "Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)" then choose "Change Setup-Method" and hit "Netd (master)" then setup the Wifi Tether to your liking it will work without a problem on infrastructure.

Thanks for the link! Got it up and working and was able to verify that I can connect to work and run apps from Citrix while talking on the phone, SVDO for the win! Now I'm ready for the next time I lose cable at home and I need to work.

Installed the Wifi Tether and installed using zrmxp95's directions. I can connect to the network with my ipad, however the phone only only recieves about 4kb of data and then the webpage never loads. I can hit refresh on the ipad, and it will load another 4kb and do the same thing.

Wireless Tether

Hey guys, I have not seen a post about this yet so I figured I'd ask. I just rooted and was able to remove ATT bloatware using titanium backup. I would also like to add a wireless tethering app so that I can use my phone as a wireless modem. I have this app installed on my sprint htc hero (also rooted). I searched the market (where I found it on my hero) but I assume ATT blocks this somehow. Has anyone tried to wirelessly tether yet? If so, were you successful?
I was just browsing over on the vibrant forums and they have no luck yet. They were able to get the apps to install fine, but the ssid would not broadcast. They are still seeking a solution... Hopefully us ATT users want this as bad as I do
want more like need.
the whole reason I got this phone was because of the community that seems to be making things happen faster than any of the iphone 4 development! I'm excited to see what they can do with the wireless tethering.
It seems to be somthing AT&T is doing. Wireless Tether will not work on the Aria right now either.
Hmmm interesting. I hope there are more developers for the captivate vs the aria.

Im sure we'll see some of the AT&T Nexus one Devs migrate on over. I mean who doesn't want a 4inch super AMOLED and Hummingbird CPU to play with. Not to mention the GPU performance pretty much double's any other Android on the market as of now.
I put my unlimited data iPad sim in my Nexus One to tether with so I'll be ok for now anyway.
I just sideloaded android wifi tether on my Captivate, and it does not work. It appears to work, but my Mac doesn't see to network. I tried the 2.0.5 beta as well as 2.0.2. Hope someone finds a fix soon, or I might have to go back to my iPhone 4 and add to supported tethering. Ouch!
O
I'm pretty sure it's something in the kernel...a custom rom might help...maybe if it uses a kernel from another S device that has the same hardware.
Its not wifi tethering but I've got pdanet working over the usb cord and bluetooth. Not quite as good but if you need something to use while you wait for someone to figure the wifi out it should do the trick.
Doesn't the Captivate have built in tethering though? And couldn't you just use that?...
USB Tethering working on Mac via PdaNet.
I have installed PdaNet on my Captivate to use to tether my Mac (10.6.4). I had to ADB the PdaNet.apk, because it wouldn't install being a non market app. I installed the server application on the Mac. Works like a charm. Latency is kinda high though ~500ms.
Used command "install" instead of "push" to make it install, as it failed when using "push".
"$ /Volumes/HDD/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/adb install /Volumes/HDD/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/PdaNet.apk" HIT ENTER
Of course my SDK is located in my Downloads folder, so all i did was Drag, and Drop the folders into Terminal. I put the .apk into the same folder before I used the "install" command.
I hope this helps someone.

Not working on my Captivate. Must need a custom Kernel or something. I even tried the 2.0.5 pre5.
Apparently at&t forgot to block the built in USB tethering option of the phone.
If you have all the drivers installed from here you can tether via USB.
1) go to settings >applications > development > make sure nothing is selected there.
2) go to settings > applications > USB Settings > select PC internet.
Connect the phone.
You might need to go into your device manager on the laptop to make sure you are not required to install additional drivers.
If you do > install the missing drivers and you are online.
If you dont > you should be online

Also i noticed that Barnacle Wifi Tether is working but is not stable.

We need kernel sourcess to enable NEtFilter on the kernel, by enabling this module, wifi thethering should work.
Yes you need custom kernel, which has been standard on most if not all custom roms for awhile now.

Wi-fi is easiest option, otherwise you can download for 32bit this driver for USB tether: http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDo...SB-Driver-for-Windows-x86-Download-96692.html

I run linux on my laptops, HP i7 and Acer Ferrari. Had plugged in Samsung Captivate via USB for file transfer, networking detected phone and connected (first time I wasn't aware networking had used usb0 (phone) instead of my WiFi connection; eating up my 3G data). Tried later on my Acer Ferrari at work; connects within a few seconds of being plugged in. I don't have PDAnet or any other special USB program installed.

It's a known issue. Most ppl experience of battery pulling.
Besides the fact that it is very difficult to setup security (WEP???) and effectively block others, mostly brain dead iphones, to automatically connect to your phone, it is not really not worth the trouble. I fired up this Android Tethering on a busy Airport and immediately got more than dozen iPhone connected to it. The build-in access control can control who has the access to the internet but incapable of kick the ofenders off your phone. Battery was dead in less than 30 minutes.
There is now a new solution that enables native wireless AP (WPA2 capable) in addition to the USB tethering (still my favorite) in Captivate Android Development forum. Unfortunately you have to flash to a custom kernel in order to restore the wireless AP capability that was stripped off by request of AT&T.
so no other option for wifi tethering besides the custom kernel huh?
I really want to tether my iPad to it to show off to my friends at work

I'm using wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre7.apk and have NEVER had an issue with my phone locking up. I wonder if people are forgetting to turn off WiFi and bluetooth on their phones, which may interfere with the tethering process.
As to encryption, setting it up was very simple and I've never had anyone else leeching off of my wireless.
so I uninstalled my version, which I tried pre5, and pre8, none worked. Uninstalled, rebooted phone, installed pre7, didn't work, uninstalled ATM rebooted phone, then turned it back on and it works.. Weird...

the custom kernel isn't as bad as it sounds (all it does is to uncommented a few lines in the init.rc). But it does require Odin to flash it which is a hassle or error prone.

PEAP Wifi

Anyone have luck connecting to a PEAP AP with credentials, I tried some apps that don't seem to work? I can't connect at my University.
Photon Q
I haven't been able to join my work's network with the photon q either. Someone in my thread suggested "explicitly trusting" the certificate but I haven't had the chance to see if the network team is competent enough to do that.
Other people at work also have other motorola phones with ICS so I'll ask them if they can connect. I haven't seen any other devices struggle like the photon q. It just constantly says connecting and then giving up. I can manually set everything correctly and it doesn't matter, if I don't manually create the profile it never asks for the rest of the information.
I'm really at a loss but if sprint's LTE announcements hold true in a couple weeks it may not even matter (assuming an LTE signal is even remotely discoverable).

I know... I do miss my evo shift's wimax, sometimes my work network was so crappy that I'd just wirelessly tether to my phone and got much better speeds.
Interesting that you noted JB. Is the general consensus that Motorola is rather slow about releasing OS updates? My co-worker with the Droid 4 just got ICS a few weeks ago while the Galaxy Nexus has been starting to get JB on sprint.
Successful connect to EAP
Well, my university has 802.1x EAP for wifi encryption. I was unable to connect from my Photon Q using the wifi settings. I have, however, found a workaround. It consists of using this app "WiFi Connection Manager" (Sorry I can't post the link)
I added the network manually through this app, and my phone connects to the network automatically.
Ill write down the steps for my University's network:
1) Click on the app "WiFi Manager"
2) Click on the menu button inside the app
3) "Manual Add Network"
4)Put in the credentials
5) Click Add
6) the phone should connect to the Enterprise network now.
Hopefully it works for everyone who needs it.

I'll have to give this a shot when I go to work tomorrow, I had the network director fiddling with my phone for a while and checking the AP manager and they just weren't talking properly. We loaded our certificate onto the phone as well and that had no effect.
EDIT: IT WORKED. Oddly enough the APs showed up as WPA/WPA2 PSK in the program, but when I manually created the profile with the settings that I know are correct it did eventually connect and work.
good work guys, my univeristy just switched over to peap and this thread helped.
Thanks, guys. Once I had gotten my Photon Q back in late September, I was able to connect to my Universities' wi-fi, although it was kind of a pain because I had to delete and re-create the network profile a few times before it would work. A few weeks ago, though, we had a security certificate expire, and so for the past three weeks I've been unable to connect to our wi-fi. Using the WiFi Connection Manager to manually create the profile worked like a charm though!
In case people are curious, our Universities wi-fi is 802.1X EAP/PEAP using MSCHAPv2 as Phase 2 authentication.

Thanks for this thread, and thanks for this post. I had the same thing happen. My work wifi showed WPA/WPA2, ect., and I could not enter my credentials. We also have an open wifi, which the program kept logging into automatically, but it doesn't work for me because it doesn't allow ssl. So, I had to delete the open network, go to the settings to filter the scan to ignore open networks, then add the secure network manually with all the credentials entered. Then it worked.

Bypass tmobile upsell without UA changer?

so just so i can verify. i tried out the svtp tehter app. and it changes the name of your tether id. its not an actual tehter app just gives you access to the hotspot app already baked in android. its more for verizon users that have the app disabled. ANYWAY suddenly i dont get the upsell page. so just to make sure (because the app is $15) i uninstalled and ran native tether and still no upsell page. so i tried it on my wifes phone (just changing the name of the tether), keep in mind my wifes phone is completely virgin so its not rooted, and BAM it works on that one too. so if anyone has time to try this out to confirm it for me or maybe i just flooked out twice lol
Edit: decided to just buy the app but it didn't work after the few times I changed the names manually on the phone so I just returned it. Changed the title to a question to stop confusion. Maybe someone else made more progress.
T-Mobile sucks for this crap
BTW im using chrome now and tried it in IE both got through
also its not tied to the name. just change it tether and change it back and the page is still gone. just got and upsell text but i usually get 2-5 before seeing the page and thats after i stop the tether and re-enable it later.
never mind upsell page is back but it did last a bit
One thing which was working for me up until a few days ago, was using Firefox Aurora (an alpha, but very stable, way more than nightlies). But at random that stopped working. Of course I installed some updates so IE 10 would work on W7 and it was after that I was blocked on FF. One other thing to note is that I can run a torrent client with no issues, so if it's possible to route a web browser through a different port, that would also work.

thank for the reply. im wondering if there is a way to hide the tether SSID from tmobile or even make it dynamic name. honestly im trying to get all my free DLC for Halo 4 on my xbox and its driving me nuts lol. the way i figure that tmobile blocks us is that they packet sniff and when there is X amount of data flowing through a port then that is when they flag your ssid (or hash tag) and sends the upsell page. im not claiming to know anything about network security but that is how it seems to be. im going to see if i can change the port that tether uses to send and receive, as you said torrenting works with no problem as does mine but they also dont use a UA to work. that is really the only way for them to find out you are tethering, otherwise they would be blocking normal traffic from our phones.

that is what im using now but my xbox wont connect for updates, it did before i got the upsell page
well t-mobile block tethering based on devices they have set up to use their towers. So you have to "masked" it as another device. If Xbox, or IE explorer (I'm assuming this is what Xbox uses) is on their blocked devices list, then you can't use the internet from their towers. Is it possible for you to download the update on a usb drive then update it through that? Sorry, I don't own an xbox so I don't know.
get fox fi app and use the proxy add on and connect through the proxy and they can not detect it.
You can download the updates but only major ones like ui updates not fixes or security sweeps. And if I don't at least do the security sweeps I can't play some of my downloaded games because this isnt the original Xbox I downloaded them to. I have tried foxfi with no luck. Perhaps you have a better tutorial I could use?

i would if i could. But i have the unique problem that the only phone signal i get is in my window, the complete other side of the room of my 360. i cant get a repeater from tmobile because its not my house and i dont have $600+ to spend on one without a contract. i also dont have a 30ft ethernet cable.

What is this upsell page? Do you see this when you use the portable Wi-Fi hotspot, or just when doing USB tethering? I heard about a year ago that T-Mobile would be charging $15/mo for these capabilities. I do not pay for it, but I still use my phone as a hotspot once-in-a-while. In-fact, I am using it right now! BTW... I am on a "Classic 1000 Ulimited Plus" package that does not show the"Mobile HotSpot Service" of the "Ulimited Premium" plan. I use CM7 based ROMs. I use the hotspot functionality that's already in CM7 based Temasek135.2.

Why don't you tether your phone to your computer then hook your Xbox's Ethernet cable into your computer and bridge the connection between the Ethernet connection to the Xbox and the tethered connection? Would that work?

That would cause DNS translation issues.

I just did this to help a friend out with his upsell page problem. Use chrome and then add the add on User agent switcher to mask as an android device. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/user-agent-switcher-for-c/djflhoibgkdhkhhcedjiklpkjnoahfmg
@projectzro I feel your pain I was up in Rochester this summer and Tmo signal sucks there
I don't have any problems other than this house lol. Its the freekiest thing, if you look at the network map for all services this house is a black hole all the way to the drive way. I do use the user agent changer but its for my Xbox so it can update.

I've been using the user agent switcher since the new unlimited plan with no issues till 3 weeks ago.everything works fine between Firefox and chrome except I can no longer watch YouTube videos. It has to be something between the agent and T-Mobile ( flash player?) because I can use a VPN and YouTube magicly works again. Other wise I get a black screen in the YouTube video that says error occurredlease try again later.
Would be nice if there was a hotspot app out there that would fix this without having to use agent switcher.

TF300T Tethering Hell: USB, WiFi, Take your pick...

Hey guys If I am in the wrong place, please let me know. I got my TF300T just a little while ago and am now trying to use it as a my main computer. That requires me to able to connect to the net on it. It works just fine when I am connected to a regular WiFi network. However, I have no Internet connection at home except for my Sprint Motorola Photon Q, which I had been using tethered over USB to my PC to get the PC online. That worked fine. But this past month, I lost my job and needed to sell the PC, so all I have left is the TF300T. I was sure it'd work fine since I got BT tethering to work fine in the past with that phone. However, I was just experimenting at that point. Now, I see it's a little more ... complicated:
I set my Photon Q to act as a WiFi hotspot using PDANet+ a.k.a. FoxFi. Creating a WiFi hotspot, I can see it on the TF300T. Whether I enter the right PSK2 key or don't use encryption at all, connecting is impossible. It will "Authenticate...." after a minute or so and then try to get an IP via DHCP. Then it will "work" a long time and then drop the connection and try again. This is with the phone an inch away. I found it had a lot of trouble just getting an IP, so I tried setting it up with a static IP. I found out that PDAnet+ seems to default to 192.168.43.111 and the gateway is presumably 192.168.43.1. I tried some other things like .100 without luck. It WILL connect but the WiFi strength indicator in the bar stays gray. It shows up and down arrows as though there's activity, and Excellent strength, but won't actually work in any apps, incl. the default Android browser. Also tried pinging the host phone using the terminal only to get Destination Host Unreachable errors.
I then tried Bluetooth tethering. It will connect and works at a decent rate. But, the only programs that work are web browsers! IM clients, Skype, Google Play, Maps, Gmail, nothing else can connect. Android is convinced I am not online at all, yet I can browse web pages at full speed, which I am doing right now. IIRC PdaNet uses some bizarro proxy setup but they tell you on their site to "configure the proxy settings" and give you none of the details like IP or port! How useful. So, this does me little good. It's horribly crippled.
I tried numerous other WiFi tether apps, most of which hard crash the Photon Q so it reboots entirely the moment it turns on the hotspot. Barnacle and one of the WiFi tether apps (1-click? I've tried so many I can barely remember...) will launch, I can see it on the TF300T, but when I try to connect it says "ANDROIDTETHER or whatever the SSID is, Saved". No matter how many times you choose Connect or Forget, then Connect again, nothing. Gets stuck at "Saved."
I'd try connecting the phone via USB via the TF300T dock but I have searched heavily and cannot find any way to do it. Do I have any options at all?
Thank you for any info.
Hi
I'm tethering Internet from my SGS 1 with 4.2.2 rom with no problem at all. I think you have problem with wifi settings.
Try to set both phone and tab wifi to correct region. If you have phone set to USA and tab to Europe it won't work. You'll find it under Wireless-advanced if you have customised roms, for stock I don't know how to set it. Haven't have stock roms for ages.
About proxy, basic proxy settings in Android works only for browser, so you will need something like proxydroid on your client. I'm using it and for me it is working. For settings, check your phone settings-mobile networks-access points and copy them from there, or call your ISP and ask them for settings.
Hope this helps.
WiFi tether for root users. Is the best thing ever. If you aren't rooted. Root your phone. Also, is there a cm ROM available for your phone? If so, switch. Then use it's default tethering. Your phone is definitely the culprit here.

"So I put my phone into airplane mode and threw it... worst transformer ever. -.-" -My friend
Unfortunately no CM ROM exists for that phone. It is rooted. I tried wifi tether for root-- played with all the settings.... it will turn on and the SSID shows up on the TF300T .. but if you try to connect it just says "Saved." Even though it also says Signal quality is "Excellent"...
I don't get it at all.

Try different profiles. I tried my EVO LTE last night for 2 hrs. Tried all generic settings. I ended up switching it to sg3 profile same chipset as mine. Worked fine after that.

Yep exactly what kaos said. I had that issue with my HD2 doing exactly what you said. Would "save" but never connect. I ended up using something like the nexus profile or something.

Great suggestions guys! I seem to be making some progress. I can now "connect" and get an IP, but the "wifi signal" bar thingy in the lower-right stays gray, not blue like it usually is when on working WiFi, and apps still cannot get to the net, which I assume is what the gray means (network connection but no internet connection). I will have to go down the list and try every possible configuation, I suppose. Yikes! I'll keep at it...
Thank you!

This may sound dumb, but how do I do that? I guess I need to set it globally in Android and not per-app because most apps don't let you set one. Thanks!

Im using ProxyDroid. But you need to have rom with root and iptables enabled. Official CM10.1 doesn't have it, unofficial from Surdu_petru does.
