Can I flash a new ROM (ICS) to my phone that has already got ICS (that's not the question) with an other kernel (Semaphore).
Do I have to change back the kernel?
Thanx for your Quick Answer.
So you want to flash a new ICS ROM over an existing ICS ROM ?
Did you mean that the current ROM has a different kernel?
Either way, flashing the new ROM will replace the old kernel and most likely work fine if the ROM is intended for your device.
What could cause problems is flashing the new ROM, then replacing the new kernel with the previous one.
Some ROMs use specific kernel features and if the used kernel doesn't suppor them it might cause problem.
If it doesn't work you should be able to flash back the previous ROM without a problem.

maybe i'm wrong but when you flash the new rom in some cases you can chose your new kernel and the installer will finish all for you.

Yes some offer that, but the op didn't which ROMs we are talking about, so i left that out.
ahh ok yeah thats right some of them must be installed over the recovery and don't have a skinned installer like aroma

okay after reading a bit more and help from other users finally got this working and maybe itll be help to someone else
PHONE MUST BE ROOTED CHECK OUT THE ROOTING THREAD
AND DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK UNDERSTAND THE RISK OF OC
THE ARIA IS ALREADY PRETTY ZIPPY SO PERSONAL CHOICE
1. grab any rom cm6 or liberated, then go into the kernel thread and download the kernel pack
some people are reporting certain versions are breaking wifi,3g etc
i used oc768-v3.2 legend zip wifi working no issues plus this is sufficient for me
but if it doesnt work play around with diff kernels
2. boot into recovery mode vol down and power
3. flash your rom then flash the kernel pack and reboot
4. download and setcpu app and start OC
im not taking any credit for any of this but i wanna thank for everyone who worked on this
i just simply wanted to write this because i wanted to try this but i got alot of diff info
but after other users made a few key points decided to write this
anyone feel free to add to this and if i made any errors or whatever mods go ahead and change it
Read ,Search ,Read . I had no luck with the 3.5 kernels tho.
What you want is some hand holding it looks like.
I figured this all out for myself by reading the forum.....
but anyway I'll answer it in the foolish hope of no more people asking the same questions
1. download what files....? if your talking about roms i think youll know where to go after reading this post.
2. you can use whatever rom you like, the main two on this forum and as far as I know on the aria full stop are Liberated and Cyanogen Mod 6. Liberated is based on the stock aria rom so its pretty much what your used to with your stock aria (minus the AT&T rubbish plus a few added perks). Cyanogen Mod 6 is based on bare android so it doesn't have all the sense ui, it is also based on froyo which is the version above eclair (which is what is running on your base aria/ liberated rom). Do not ask which rom to use, it is up to personal preference you just have to try both and see which one you like.
3. you flash a kernel the same way you install a rom on your phone except instead of selecting the rom .zip file you select the kernel .zip file. You should first flash a rom and then afterwards flash the kernel. As ycode90 said some kernels don't work so just go through the process again and try another one, the 3.2 825 kernel was working on liberated for me so try that one.
All OC kernals broke wifi or mobile network on my buddies Aria, I left him with the stock kernal from CM6.

Yup, it had been my experience that these OC kernels and *anything* that utilizes gpu sucks. There isn't a kernel for the aria at this time, and by using these kernels here you are increasing cpu performance at the expense of gpu performance. I don't believe its worth it at all just for a linpack number.
Yep patiently waiting for an ARIA kernel.
Working over clock:

, just need to get the latest nightly, 87 so that bluetooth, wifi, and network all works great.
Good Luck
I don't understand how to flash the kernel or rom. I see no options in Recovery. I'm on CM6.0.2.1 trying to use oc844-v3.5-legend-cm-2.6.29-signed. Help?

you install it the same way you installed the CM6 Rom. Put the kernel zip on your SD card and install the zip via Clockwork. Also anytime you flash a new Rom you will have to reflash the overclock kernel.
Can't find anything like this. Want to use a stock rom until CM7 gets its crap together.
U dont have a back up of your stock rom ? Take them from this time onwards. Its situations like these when u required them
What's wrong with CM7? Seems better than stock to me atm.

I'm surprised they're at RC status on CM based on some of the various bug reports and missing features I keep seeing pop up here and in the general section. The short answer to your question is that it's not-quite-ready-for-prime-time in some people's experience.
I'll turn your question around: what's wrong with stock? Gingerbread/NS is first Android combo I've not felt the desire to use a non-stock rom on yet even after two months.
To the original poster, I'll second what @suhas_sm said, you don't have a nandroid of your stock/rooted system? That should always be the first thing you do after rooting any phone, and the first step in flashing any new rom, ESPECIALLY a new rom that is in alpha/beta status (like CM7).
If you don't have your own nandroid, the development section does have nandroid images of a stock rom you can restore over your phone via clockwork recovery.
I have the stock back up but won't I lose root after I reboot?
I LOOOVE CM roms but CM7 is too buggy for me. Can't wait to use it when it's stable.
I will say I love my stock ROM with the Netarchy Kernal @ 1.2Ghz it is blazing fast. This is the first android phone I have had and damn its great. I don't think i need to go doing new ROMs other than the whole theme option sounds great.
Do i just unlock my bootloader, then fastboot install recovery and start installing custom roms?
Or do i need to change my CID, update to the latest ATT RUU (1.85?) then unlock the bootloader again, then install a recovery and rom?
i'm still on stock Rogers 1.73
The first one.
awesome
so people were only updating to 1.85 becuase there weren't any custom roms yet right?
when custom roms came at first we had to update to whatever base the rom was using.
Now we can install kernels along with the roms so there's no need to do that anymore

So we need to install the roms, along with a kernel update.zip?
Or does it all come packaged like it does for other phones.

Hey guys, I have had a Bionic for the past 18 months or so....forgive me if my questions sound silly....
Recently, I was given a S3 to use. Before I take the plunge and get it activated, I was tryign to learn about the ROMS etc out there.
- I see there are TouchWiz ROMS and AOSP roms. I'm assuming the TouchWiz ROMS are based on stock rom just tweaked and debloated and teh AOSP ROMS are the ones built from scratch?
- I see there are kernels around....same, AOSP and TW. Is it safe to assume if I use AOSP, I need to get an AOSP kernel? If I install for example the latest Liquidsmooth....do I have to do the kernel 1st? or does the ROM have the kernel built in?
- Do I have to unlock the bootloader? Or is that what the kernel does?
Again, sorry for the dumb questions....my Bionic was simpler to do...with less options....
Thanks in advance

1. AOSP is the original Android OS untouched by any company. Touchwiz is Samsung's version Android.
2. You don't need a custom kernel but it can optimize your phone for increase in battery life.
3. All ROMs have kernels built-in they have to or else it won't work .
4. You must unlock the boot loader in order to flash anything.
Gotcha..!
Thank you!
So is it safe to assume, you flash ROM 1st, then you flash kernel? At 1st glance, I like the Liguidsmooth ROM, but people are also raving about the KT747 kernel. SO I would have to flash his AOSP version...
I have seen some radios also...Is that advisable to do?

Yes that is correct but you must first root your phone. The bionic had a larger margin of error when it came to rooting.
Yes, 1st thing I'm going to do is root and unlock the bootloader....
One last Q...
I see people are having GPS lock issues on some ROMs (eg Liquidsmooth), compared to stock. Would that be a kernel type off issue? Would updating the kernel to the KT747 fix this?

It is a ROM issue so the devs have to make a fix for it.
Hello, i currently have installed the CM10 with the old kernel version.
Reading much of the new posts in the development zone, i see that to get a new ROM i have to update the kernel.
I'm thinking about updating to the Carbon rom, but i notice that i need the new kernel so i can update to this ROM.
My question is this, going from the CM10 with S-ON and the OLD Kernel, what do i need to do to go to the new ROM with the new 3.4 kernel? (In the threads i always see the need to have S-OFF, and i think i'm not interested in going that way)
Will this move prevent me to return to the CM10 backup that i made with the TWRP recovery?
And a final question, what are the bugs that i will notice from moving to the new kernel?
Thanks in advance.
You will be able to go back to a back up. S-off is much better as you can flash at any given time without the need to flash boot.IMG. that'd what makes it better to get the 3.4 kernel you need to have a hboot of 1.13.00.00 or higher. Some are lucky and can have low hboots and flash it while many others( most everybody) can not do this.
