[GUIDE] Noobs guide to Rooting and ROM flashing - HTC Sensation

Hello everyone,
I'm am pretty sure there are many guides in rooting your htc phone as well as flashing a custom ROM. I am also pretty sure that there are guides out there that uses BIG words with not enough Lament words, so here is a simple noob friendly guide to basically make your life easier.
1. Download and install HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe from http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
2. Download revolutionary-0.4pre4.zip for windows from http://revolutionary.io
3. Extract it and run revolutionary.exe
4. Connect HTC Sensation to PC and select HTC Sync.
5. revolutionary.exe should detect your HTC Sensation phone and provide your with details about hboot and serial number.
6. select the hboot version and type the serial number into the box and hit enter.
7. It will now try to root phone. Wait and the phone will restart a few times.
8. When it's done, it'll ask to install clockworkmod recovery (cwm). Choose Y for yes or N to refuse. Install recovery based on what the ROM suggests. For ARHD, it suggested EXT4 touch recovery, so press N.
9. Press volume button up or down to navigate and select reboot phone by pressing power button.
10. Download EXT4 touch recovery at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377759 (thanks to Madmaxx82)
11. Read the Read Me to learn how to install EXT4 Touch recovery.
12. Download firmware 3.32 for the related CID and MID. Be sure to check your phone's CID and MID
13. Download Super Wipe at http://xda.androidrevolution.nl/db_...ndroid_Revolution_HD_Super_Wipe_Sensation.zip
14. Download the ROM found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098849 (credit to Mike1986)
15. Copy the file PG58IMG.zip to the root of microSD. (root - meaning not in a folder)
16. Copy the super wipe and 6.6.3 ROM zip files to the root of microSD.
17. Power off your phone/ Remove battery from phone
18. Hold volume-down and power button simultaneously to get into bootloader mode.
19. When in Bootloader, it will automatically ask you to update your firmware, press 'yes.'
20. Once the update is complete, immediately take out your battery. (it may sound scary, but it's actually quite safe)
21. Take your MicroSD out and connect it to your pc to remove the PG58IMG.zip and insert it back once completed.
22. Get into boot loader once again (volume down + power button)
23. Now your bootloader screen should read:
-revolutionary-
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.27.1100
RADIO-11.22.3504.07M
24. Select 'recovery' and it will automatically lead you into 4EXT recovery (the one you installed earlier)
25. Install 'superwipe' script.
26. Select 'install from sd card' and look for the Custom ROM you have copied into the root of your Sd card.
27. During the installation you will be asked the following questions:
-Do you have a TMOUS sensation 4g?.
-Do you want to flash the sony bravia engine support?.
-Do you want to flash Stock or Custom Kernel?
-If you picked custom then you will be given a choice between Faux or Sebastian Kernel
-Do you want to flash HQ camera?
Once again this is all your choice, please read up on what each of them does.
28. When the ROM is fully flashed select back
29. Select reboot from 4ext recovery
30. Done, enjoy ICS with Beats Audio, the first boot should take around 5-10 mins
HAVE FUN ROOTING AND FLASHING CUSTOM ROM NOOBS :-D
Just remember, do this at your own risk, I will not take any responsibility for you Bricking your phone***

Good job!

Some feedback to your thread
Hi, i wanted to give some feedback about this.
Regarding the content of your post, you might want to correct some things you've wrote that make the guide not so simply but confusing and inaccurate... sheer constructive criticism.
"Download firmware 3.30 for the related CID and MID.". If you are pretending to guide someone on how to flash any "newly" released ICS ROM you need to download and flash 3.32 firmware, not 3.30.
"This phone MID is modelid: PG5813000 and CID is cidnum: HTC__044. So if new kernel appear in the future, be sure to download from this category only.". You meant your specific phone, right?. Every guy out there has a different phone and more likely a different CID. There is a CID thread just in case you want to check out some of the available CIDs. Also, (and even more confusing) CID and model aren't related in any ways to kernel or firmware, what do you mean with "a new kernel appear in the future"? we have new kernels almost every 2 days from faux, sebastian, show-p and other developers, and what category are you talking about specifically?
In the third point you wrote It will now trying to root phone. Wait and the phone will restart a few times. Revolutionay tool is intended to S-OFF the device, not rooting. Then your guide isn't about how to root the phone as the thread title says ... i think this is the guide noobs are actually looking for.
If you are quoting or using content from others posts the correct thing to do is to give proper credit to the author i.e: Mike1986., authors of revolutionary tool, madmaxx among others.
I'm speaking for myself here and i want to ask you kindly to credit my work in the things you've pretty much copied literally from my thread [GUIDE][APR.16.12] How to flash ICS 3.32 firmware | flash/update ARHD 6.6.x ICS ROM, first post, steps 4 and 5.
I'm reffering to steps 18 to 37 in your guide which are 99% the exact same words i've wrote in my guide. I've spent some time and effort writing that guide, While i don't see why you wanna re-write my guide If you want to use my work it's ok, i don't mind, but please at least give proper credit and don't go around saying is your guide and your work when 50% of it's copy-pasted from my thread.
Also i've taken down the download link of 4EXT recovery touch flashing tool (steps 11 and 12 in your post) which i've modded and packed myself and it's also posted in my guide, if you want the dropbox download link i can give it to you, but again, proper credit.
You've open a thread in Android development section, and this is clearly not a development thread. Pleas ask a mod to move your thread to the correct section. Nevermind, thread has been moved already. Thanks to the mods.
Thanks

Couldn't agree more, it's not that we don't appreciate the effort but there are enough guides on this forum and all the info is there for grabs, you just have to find it. There's no need to create new guides because people don't use the search button.

Hello everyone.. Not that i wanted to copy any of your work and take credit for it, as i have never seen your guide.. I am sorry if i have offended you in any way.. I practically just wrote down what my friend told me over the phone, as he was explaining to me the proper way to root as well as put in a custom ROM on my sensation. I did not in any way meant or did not know that i was copying anybody's work. As far as i know, i only wrote this guide to help beginners, as i was once one. The only guide i have read was mike's guide on the front page of the ARHD thread, which at first i did not really understand. Another thing, it's not that i didnt want to give mike credit and take all the credit for my own, as you can see i am using's Mike's ARHD banner as well as i have given links to his thread. As for your guide, i will rephrase everything if it makes you feel better cheers mate~ The most important thing for me is to expand the sensation community.

Brother, if there is enough guides on this forum, why do new beginners always ask the same questions? ..well let me tell you my experience, understand certain guides is a bit difficult as they contain words not familiar to beginners. Once again, i made this guide so i wouldnt have to refer to anyone else's guide if someone else needed my assistance/help. cheers mate~

Would like to once again apologize for my premature posting of this thread. I should have asked my friend what his sources were. Thanks again all for the heads up

Well there is no absolute need, but then again he is free to do as he pleases.
If he (or ANYONE for that matter) is simply trying to help the noobs that come on here every day asking, "How i root plzzz help thx", then I am all for it.
But I don't think anyone should be denied the right to create these sorts of guides. Plus, the poorer written ones eventually die anyway, its the way a forum works.

No problem, but next time read up a bit more, and be more precise. Also, remember to give credit to the required people, as somebody stated earlier.

Sometimes it's just sheer laziness. Other times they may not understand other guides or just need reassurance.
Either way, I appreciate you taking the time to create this.

Like i said, offcourse we appreciate the effort! What i'm trying to say is that people need to use the search function more. There are enough guides, If you don't understand something in the guide than ask it in the thread, no need to make a new thread about it.
Also, my experience is that If you use the search function enough, you will learn a lot about your phone and the ways to modify it. With that knowledge you can help other people. It's a vicious circle ;-)

Im lost
OK guys, I have never rooted a phone but decided today to give it a try, why.. first cause I dont wish to wait till June for ICS and second becuase I saw this simple looking step-by step guide......so I thought simple.
First off I am PC savy but NOT at all cell phone hacking savy. All of this jargun you all use CID, MID, RUU, 4EXT means nothing to me and I have gotten lost.
I started with the instruction on this thread but then got the bright idea of seeing if there were some youtube step-by-steps how to's and there were. But the two videos I watched must have been older cause they had one major step differnt.
They say to type Y to Install recovery mod after S OFF, and I did. so now the next steps in the video dont work and I have veired off track what you all say to do.... I'm scared and lost.
I'm a realtor and my phone is my money maker, I can't brick it.
Someone help please.

Bro, i understand what you're saying.. haha trust me.. My only advice to you is.. If i were you and my phone was of great importance. Don't root your device.. Even if the process is quite easy and most of the time people don't brick their devices, there is still a small percentage.. The best thing you could do is update to ICS via official HTC release, which if i am not mistaken, has already been done in many countries. Cheers mate.

Ok pal paste us a link to the video you followed. Now, does your phone still start up properly? If so then this should be easy. Power off the device fully. Remove the battery for around 20 seconds or so then reinsert. While holding down volume down also hold power until the device boots to bootloader. (Bootloader is equal to BIOS for a PC). It will give you some information. Post that Info up here. If it says s-off then using the volume buttons scroll down to recovery and push power. If you see a red triangle and/or exclamation mark then you have a stock recovery. If it says clockwork mod recovery then you are s-off with a custom recovery and all seemingly has went well
Also Cid stands for carrier identification and is used for carrier information and software I think. Mid is used to reference the country/ area you are in, for software as well as networks. They are both used together. Ruu stands for rom utility update and is a HTC program for updating HTC phone software and ext4 is a custom recovery that uses an exit4 partition on the sdcard I believe

oppps. XD guess i didnt answer your questions properly..sorry i misread.. The first thing we need to know is whether or not your phone can start up and does not just blank out when you turn it on.

Hey guys, thank you for the quick replies. Yes thank goodness it does power up.
ok here is the youtube video i followed, opps.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvg0i8in96M
All I got was to turn the phone to s-off but not rooted.
So yes the phone functions, but not my voicemails. It now say
"This phone was associated with a different account. Do you want to delete the exsisting voicemails?"
So I would like to proceed with the upgrade to ICS, unless becuase I am SUCH a noob you all think I should just some how revert back to S-on and leave my phone alone?
I just read here all the time, you should root, its SOOO easy... and it not if you are a noob..
Thank you all for your time, and I love this site.

i cant see it being an issue bud firstly, i am yet to own this device (but soon! roll on payday ^^) so i can only take you as far as rooting and custom recoverys, but for ics updates youd best ask others go to this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300 and follow steps 2 through to 4 and then you will have a custom recovery, full root and supercid ^^ after that if you want to try an ice cream sandwich rom look
at the dev thread here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1112&order=desc&page=2 always double check that you understand what your about to do before you do it, and all threads *should* have full instructions on how to flash them. remember that installing a custom rom will WIPE ALL YOUR DATA so remember to do a nandroid back up from your recovery good luck pal and enjoy

OK guys, well I did not chicken out. I followed the video once again, but this time used my original stock SD card and everything worked. I am rooted! so now to the next steps...
wish me luck.

You basically perform most of the steps to perform a factory reset, but not the last...
1. Power Off Phone.
2. Remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, then reinsert the battery.
3. Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER
button.
4. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release
the VOLUME DOWN button.
Now the top line of the screen should....say something like....
SAGA PVT SHIP and either S-ON or S-OFF
To get out of this screen:
1. hit the Power button
2. then the VOLUME DOWN to select REBOOT
3. then hit the POWER button
Once you have a S-OFF phone then getting root should be easy.
thnx bro. Sadly, my phone is S-On Is there any way to root S-On Or change it to S-Off?? Also, wats XTC Clip?

I can see you intention was good, but unfortunately the rooting process varies slightly between devices, this comes down to the bootloader, android version, and HTC build version, each have different parts which can be exploited in order to create a loop hole in order to abuse.
The problem is, all it takes is one person to not read your post completely, follow that guide, then when something goes wrong they're coming back and posting "HULP FONE NO BOOT WUT DO NOW?!111" on the dev board.

Hahahaha.. Got your point.. I've seen such responses when I was reading posts related to s2 rooting.. Luckily for me rooting was a breeze.. I will try your suggestions once my friend gets the desire s.. So tell me.. Your ds was s-off or s-on? If on was there any particular thread that was the most helpful
Edit: ok... read the how to s-off guide.. man its painful
When I got my HTC Desire S I was lucky to have the Telstra pre-installed ROM, S-ON, no root etc. The bootloader was the first one .. (can't think of the version sorry), which at least made the process a breeze.
But literally I took the phone out of the box (brand new haha), turned it on, rooted it, installed recovery, and installed a custom ROM.
I did complete the process using a Live USB Ubuntu, I highly recommend doing it this way, as you won't experience any issues with drives etc. It does take away a lot of the hassle you see in a lot of the threads with phones not being recognised, and what-not.

Sure, not a problem. If your able to find out the Bootloader version, ROM version etc. it would help a lot as we can at least advise you as to what you need to do in order to complete a hassle free process ;-).
Bootloader - hold volume down button, then press power on (when the phone is switched off (make sure fast boot is disabled))
ROM version - Settings > About Phone > Software Information

Questions on root/flashing ROMs on HTC sensation

Hi guys. I'm hoping my post hasn't broken any forum rules... but anyway, i am very new to android, and i'm still trying to read up on/learn about rooting a phone + flashing a ROM to it. I have a few questions that i'm hoping some experienced people could answer for me =]
1. Does my HTC sensation need to have a certain update before i can try archieve S-Off? (I'm on the Three network [UK] and my software number is 1.34.771.1)
2. How easy is it to brick a device? Im good with computers, and can follow instructions, but seeing as i have no past experience with android, i'm anxious to try flash new ROMs to my phone without insurance - as £500 for a new device would kill me... =P
3. When flashing a new custom ROM to my phone, what kind of 'wipe' do i need to perform? I've read a few articles, all of which say to perform different wipes.
4. I dont understand ' Radio Flashing' could someone kindly explain that to me please?
5. What exactly does CWM backup? =P
I hope i'm not wasting anyones time here, i have read through the articles for noobs, just need some clarification =]
Thanks for everyones time.

1. As long as you are on Android 2.3.3 there shouldnt be a problem. 2.3.4 donesnt have a S=off just yet, i think
2. Bricking is actually very hard to do, if u follow instructions you should be good
3. all you need to wip is the system data, cache, and i reccomend wiping the battery status too
4. Radio flashing is chaning your radio number. this is actually a very easy process. Dont worry about this, all you do is put a zip on ur sd card, and the phone does the rest.

Thank you very much =] Think i'll give rooting a go within the next week... just want to make my sensation that much faster and improve the battery life!
If you don't mind me asking;
What exactly is a Radio number for?
I am on android 2.3.3 , just my software number seemed different to other peoples phones =P
So if i use this 'Clockwork Mod' to backup everything, once the new ROM has installed, will everything just be the same (apart from the changes on the ROM obv) such as app placements on homescreens etc. Or will i have to put everything back?
Also, say android releases 2.3.5 , im assuming i would just flash an updated ROM over the top of an older 2.3.4 ROM when it is released?
I've read through the 1st sticky a few times already, just to familiarise myself with certain words/actions =]
Finally, what is hboot =]
Thanks again for your time!

Clockwork Mod is just a recovery program to allow you to install new ROMs to your device, but most importantly, to let you backup and restore your current device configuration (like a sort of time machine). Most developers recommend Clockwork Mod (CWM) because it is so good at what it does. If anything fails, and you need to use your phone in a pinch, just revert to a CWM backup, and all's well!
So, to answer your question, unfortunately, no. One of the only ways to do that is with Titanium Backup, a program from the Android Market.
CWM is for reverting to previous incarnations of your phone's software and firmware.
Sorry I only answered one question, but it was the only one I knew how to in an effective manner.
Sorry, I can answer another!

A radio is the way that your device communicates with your mobile networking. (wifi, 3G/4G, etc) Different Radio versions (numbers) work better for different people. Most developers will release a matched radio with their ROMs, which is usually what works best for them. Depending on your area, different radios may work better for you. Ultimately concerning radios, Your Mileage WILL vary. it's one of the other big trial and error pieces to flashing custom ROMs.

Radio Number/Version is the version of ur radio. This is signal related.
So when updates come out they typically update the
radio and make the signal strength better.
This is something to be careful with, when changing ROMs
make sure that the some you are about to change into
supports ur radio version.
When u use ClockWork Mod to backup it will backup your current settings. So if u backup it consists of your rom , apps, settings, etc. so if u restore that then everything would be like the old one. So Yes, u would have the set everything back on the homescreen. Its ok, u will get used to that.
When they release android 2.3.5 you might have to "wipe" your phone and do it again. Maybe, depending on your rom, you might be able to flash on top of 2.3.4
H-Boot is similar to the Bios of the computer. And you know how carefully you have to be to change that.
But the H-Boot version that the 1st sticky says allows changing of certain things, thus allowing you to have root.
Feel free to ask away, im here to help you

lol. you posted both while i was writing up my response.
Its good though, because then the OP will get to read 2 times as much, which will make him even better at the terminology and the process
Lol. I'm just trying to be helpful so i can get to posting on the Dev. forums. There are plenty of easy questions there...
Appreciating the help guys =] Starting to understand a bit better!
So when i flash a new ROM, i must flash a new Radio? If i flash the recommended radio, how likely am i to get a good signal? And if im getting poor signal, i just have to keep trying new Radios? ( I Heard flashing radios is one of the ways you can brick your device)
Also with CWM - When the backup is made... do i have to keep it on the Sd card? Or can i move it to the computer so it takes up less space?
And if i understand correctly - CWM basically creates a backup just incase things go wrong you can always revert back?
... If i use titanium backup, what benefits does that bring over CWM? - Is it worth the money?
Thanks again

Also, how do i find my hboot version?
Ive started trying to get S-Off... just be reading ahead, it says that Custom ROMs come with root already? Does that mean i just need CWM with S-Off to flash a ROM? Or do i need to Root + Do the Super-Cid thing?

- Hold the power button, untill you get Shut Down, Airplane Mode or Restart.
- Click on Restart then Yes.
- Wait until all the lights on your device turn off.
- Hold the Vol. Down Button until a white screen shows.
There you'll find HBOOT-XXXXXX
This is your HBOOT version.
To get to your OS again:
- Make sure FASTBOOT is hightlighted.
- Press the <Power> button.
- Go to REBOOT by pressing Vol. Down.
- Press the <Power> button.
Hope it helps

You don't need Root to install a custom Root.
Just S-OFF, CWM and SuperCID I believe..
Just note down your old CID before writing the new SuperCID as you may need it later if you want to flash RUU and afraid of doing something wrong
Later on, if you want to flash RUU (Rom Upgrade Utility) without the fear of flashing a wrong one, you can just write the old CID to your device again
Check this post to know more
Sorry for the silly amount of posts... i cant find how to delete them!
Just so you know - I've archieved S-Off now , and installed CWM successfully.
Am i ready to flash a ROM?

To flash a ROM, you mean Stock ROM (RUU) or Custom ROM?
If Custom Rom, please read my post #13 then do the SuperCID thing as you will need it for custom ROM..
About your saved games, the only way I know you can backup your saved data with is using Titanium Backup, which can be found in the Market.
Obviously, if you still don't know what you're doing, research more and then do whatever you want.
I take no responsibilities about anything that may happen to your phone using any of the methods above.
Good luck

You'll find CID: XXXXX, keep this code with you, in-case you need it later for installing RUU and confused about which one to use.

That's exactly what happened to me when I backed up.
I think you should ignore it, as it is trying to backup an extension in the SD-Card, as you can re-partition your SD-Card using CWM as I understand.
I would be pleased if someone explained to me what exactly sd-ext is and what I'm missing
Good day to you all

Ignoring it is ok. sd-ext not being backed up is most likely an indicator that an EXT4 formatted portion of your SD card was not found. By default, your SD card is formatted as FAT32 because of its universal acceptance by all OSs. Some users report a performance boost/personal preference toward EXT4, YMMV.

Most importantly, ClockworkMod does not back up your SD card. that is something you have to do manually on your computer, should you choose to do so. CWM is only responsible for backing up the internal storage of the phone that can be changed or wiped by ROMs (or mike1986's SuperWipe.) ROMs shouldn't change the contents of the SD card.

While the guide is appreciated, I don't believe there is enough information about which hboot version, ROM versions, which region, S-ON/S-OFF status (unlock method) that you should be on in order to use it. Even if this guide applies to all versions, then its important that you say that so as to ensure people feel as ease when using it.
You must also be careful not to duplicate existing guides, as we now have multiple guides achieving the same thing, which just leads to further confusion and more questions.
Also, on a personal note any chance of not doing the next one in all capitals

Edit after you've finished now:
So i suggest you to:
Start your threadtitle with [GUIDE], people will easier find that thread
Do optimze the style of your guides, some bold lines, more colors, ... so that people can orientate easier
What the files you are offering are doing exactly? I'm little bit carefully if someone is calling me to use java
Some information about what i'm on after that procedure would be nice!

adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell /data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.27.405.6
when it finishes u need to lock your bootloader to proceed.
fastboot oem lock
after just run the ruu you neeeed and it will get your phone back to stock just remember to flash the eng-hboot or you have a greater chance of a brick

I've gone and made a paper weight

Well I decided to jump the hoop and go for rooting my mt4g slide. Was doing great and unlocked it using the lovely All-In-One tool kit and couldn't get the phone to show S-off. I figured I needed to get this done before installing a rom's as I tried 2 different ones and neither would work. Tried a few different things and still wouldn't work to get S-off. Long story short, now I'm in a boot loop where the phone automatically goes into the boot loader. It will start up and show the mytouch splash screen before going into the loader. It will scan the sdcard for files and say there isn't a image etc and go back to the main boot loader screen. I can't do anything beyond that. I hit recovery, factory reset, and nothing. Tried putting roms and see if it would out of the blue read one.
It's my fault for taking the risk but adding a bit of insult to my injury is my back up phone, G1, won't even turn on now. So now I'm kind of phone less. Any suggestions on how to restore hboot?

"tried a few different things" to get S-Off?
There are two ways of getting S-off. One is done with Revolution if your HBOOT is earlier than 1.45. The other is juopunutbear if your HBOOT is 1.45. Did you check your HBOOT version before "trying a few things"?
Did you read the instructions for the all-in-one toolkit? Or possibly just follow the steps in order in the program? It's specifically designed so you don't need s-off.
I'm assuming you must have flashed CWM recovery since you said you did a factory reset. Did you do Juopunutbear or revolution, or are you planning on leaving S-ON? If S-ON, Did you flash a kernel(boot.img) using the toolkit? If you can get into HBOOT and get into recovery, there's no reason you should need to revert to stock. However, if your plan is to continue doing steps before reading the instructions, you should probably revert to stock anyway before you really do brick your device.
This link will provide you everything you need to get your device running. Just follow the spteps from the beginning. If your bootloader is already unlocked from HTCDev, then start at the step directly after unlocking the bootloader.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1532809
The toolkit worked well for me (even though it was my first attempt at anything), so I guess I'd echo that. It also matched with the step-by-step guides on stuff I found elsewhere in the forum. BUT there is a real difference in the method and order of things for the two hboots, hence KarriOn's questions.
However, having rooted and S-Offed, I then got a bit cocky and managed to end up in a not dissimilar position to you! Total panic, but I managed to get out by thinking through what I'd done, researching, and the cause and hence solution became clear. Took a night sleeping on it, and 2 hours.
what HBOOT?
Did you unlock the boot loader?
Did you get recovery on
Did you do a backup before going any further?

I followed the all in one tool for everything. I've finally been able to get into cwm recovery. For awhile it wouldn't and I gave up for the night. Came back yesterday morning to tinker with it more and it worked. I've tried flashing the superSu.zip file in cwm and after it reboots it still reads s-on. But either way I can't get the phone to do anything other than boot into the bootloader screen. I'm going to check out the link about 2 posts up and tinker with it after work. Thanks for the replies!

Oh yeah, that is the tread I used and the tool. After getting unlocked from HTC I tried flashing a rom and it wouldn't work. Figured I needed to get s-off for roms also. That is where my error started.

You don't need S-Off for ROMs to work. It sounds like you didn't flash a kernel after installing a ROM. The instructions on doing this are listed in the all-in one tool thread, the "flash ics roms with s-on" thread, and even on the all-in one tool interface itself.

Flashing SuperUser won't get you to S-Off. Hasoon2000 has two different toolkits. One that will guide you through the rooting process and the other on how to gain S-Off using the Juopunutbear method. Having S-Off isn't necessary to root but it will take a few extra steps to flash a different ROM with S-ON. I was too much of a chicken to try the S-Off method since there is some risk involved but several have reported that it worked successfully for them.

Buying a Sensation next week. I'm really confused. Any help?

Hey,
Sorry if this is annoying, but I'm buying a Sensation next week and I'm confused about a few things. I've read a lot of the threads here and I'm still really confused on where to start with this phone. I'm not a total noob to android, as I have a sidekick right now but from the looks of the forums this phone is quite different with stuff like root, custom roms, etc., so I'm pretty much a complete noob with this one. So where do I start with this phone? I'm not sure in what order to do things and for some reasons I'm confused by the guide threads (what order to go in, etc.).
If anyone can help at all that'd be awesome.
Thank you!

Obviously you want to root the phone.. Just start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
Then flash away whatever ROM you like..

That thread is outdated and that s-off method will not work unless the phone is still on GB, if the hboot is 1.17 then you can use that guide, but if the hboot is 1.2x (x stands for any number) then use this tool and read the first post carefully http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668276
P.S To find hboot take out phone battery and then place it back in and hold the power button and volume down at the same time until you see a white screen, which should show you your hboot version at the top.
Like the person above me said, you first need to find out what Hboot is it. I have just started rooting last week, about few days ago I successfully rooted my Sensation 4G with no problems and installed Custom Rom. If your Hboot is 1.18 or lower, it easier to use the thread given above which is what I used to root my Sensation 4G which it Hboot was 1.18. If your Hboot is 1.2X, it not gonna be as easy. What I did before rooting ever, was find information about rooting, and Custom Roms, recoveries, etc. to learn more about how to root and to do it properly so you don't **** up your phone. If you follow instructions carefully, you will have no problem, trust me, rooting is piece of cake. Here is a thread that will guide you of rooting http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/221212-faq-rooting-updated-7th-april-2012-a.html#14 It will tell you mostly everything about rooting.
