Screen burn in or ghost image? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I noticed after my keyboard went away yesterday I saw some screen burn in. Is this normal? It also does it when I pull down the notifications bar. Is this a burn in or ghost image? Is the screen defective im not sure

I've noticed it too on my phone. when something dark is on the screen it tends to take a second or two to fade away.

So do we know if this is a hardware problem on all samsung's screens or just the skyrocket?

Same here. I thought I was going crazy because LCDs are not suppose to burn in.

Is it true that LCD aren't supposed to burn in? At my local ATT store the samsung focus phones have horrible screen burn in. And they use the super amoled screen which I think is LCD.

I bought my skyrocket literally the day it came out, and haven't had a single issue with the screen, lines or burn in, no restart issues, UCLC5 works great, and most of the other stuff people complain about.
I wonder if the later released phones had a small manufacturing flaw. when did you guys get your skyrockets?

I just got mine like two weeks ago. I wonder if certain batches are better than others. Also, It could be that you just think you don't have the issues but maybe its because you arent looking for them. Which is good don't look for them it will bug you.

It's an oLED screen, not LCD, and burn in is an issue over a long time.

Our screen is just like a plasma TV, burn in is possible if a static image is left on the screen, there is a break in period for the screen just like a plasma.
In the market get the app called display tester. It has functions to remove burn in, like a plasma TV.

G2x LCD Backlight bleed issue, pretty bad [pic]

Looks like this is going to be a larger issue than I thought. Major Manufacturer defect it sounds like. Engadget mentioned it on test unit.
Android 2.2 has a white notification bar so people don't and wont notice it, but boot screen, games, or video's with black it is noticeable and is NOT acceptable. Android 2.3 black notification bar you'd see it every time you look at phone.
I just got my brand new G2x today, and noticed this in the first 10 seconds. I'll be getting it replaced asap. Sadly can't do in store replacement cuz ordered online, different systems. So I have to wait for another to come in the mail.
http://yfrog.com/h4ey8fmj
This is during a video, that is WAY to much, it is also on the bottom of same side, but not as bad. So for those that cant tell, both right and left of the top of the phone has bleeding
MyTouch4G left, and the G2x with bleed on right!
Not good at all.
I have this problem as well, hopefully the replacement unit doesn't have the same issue :/
I have the same problem. Replacement units plus brick and mortar launch I smell backordered
Called store and store purchases can be replaced, but if you bought online then you must go through online for the new one. I might just go buy one in store tomorrow, and return my online purchase. lol.
Instead of waiting for a replacement to come in the mail.. this is BS though, they had plenty of time to check for these sort of things.
Both right and left have it when in portrait. So holding the phone for daily use, you can't see it, but on the top, both sides have pretty bad bleeding, the left (not in picture) is not as bad, but very close. overall this is terrible to see happening on such an amazing device. All the excitement I had coming home to open this, went to **** within 10 seconds when I saw that on boot screen.
uhhh.
Update, I can't even adjust my screen brightness, the option is greyed out on my phone. Anyone else with that problem?
Here is another shot using the app called DRAW!, screen goes black and you can draw on it, check out the difference.
MyTouch 4G on left, G2x on right. lol.

A little part of me died when i saw this issue... I am going in the store early tomorrow... guess i have to take a hoodie to create a dark environment and check for bleeding... did this happen right away like out of the box or after a few reboots and such?
I have a SLIGHT backlight bleed (not really noticeable) on the top left and even less on the bottom left - however, this doesn't affect the usability of the phone and I think you're just picking things to slam the G2x on. NO PHONE IS EVER PERFECT! Get over your nitpicking and move on or go to another phone - pretty much guaranteed that whatever replacement you get is going to have the same issues. End of story. Deal with it and move on (it only really affects blacks anyway) or go to another phone.

What people don't understand is that EVERY LCD WILL HAVE BACKBLEED. Its just part of the process. But compare a Captivate with SAMOLED side by side with the G2x and you'll quickly notice that the colors on the G2x are much more realistic than the Captivate/SGS and on top of that, SAMOLED integrates a pentile matrix display which essentially cuts the actually visible resolution in half in comparison to the IPS-LCD that the G2x utilizes. I can actually see the pixels on my Captivate - I can NOT see them on my G2x because it uses an LCD. I'm quite happy with my G2x so far - hell my roommate was playing NFS for 2 hours and my battery went down 20% - my Cap can't even run the same APK (I rooted and installed it on the Cap - frame rate was abysmal - everyone says the PowerVR 540 is a better chip than the nVidia but the fact of the matter is that nVidia has a lot of hold in the industry due to their desktop presence and that makes a huge dent in the other chips - nVidia chips are easier to program for and as time goes on (Ice Cream for example), only then will the full power of these chips actually come to light.

My HD7 has absolutely no bleed and it's an LCD...
Screen flickering???
Ok, as a fellow early adopter, I too have the LCD bleeding problem. However, I'm noticing another problem. I put the screen to "automatic brightness" mode, which causes it to flicker. I understand that different lighting changes the brightness, but not like this. The screen goes light to dark and back again several times in the same light at the same angle. I'm thinking maybe it could be an issue with just my phone. Anyone else?

My Nexus always did this as well. I think this is more a problem with Android and adjusting the brightness too frequently based on small changes in light as opposed to looking for averages over a minute or so.
Luckily CyanogenMod 7 has incorporated several manual adjustments to how often this sensor changes your backlight and it makes a huge difference. Prior to that, I always just used manual backlight adjustment because it is pretty annoying.
I'm not nitpicking.. lol I can't believe people see that and think it is acceptable. you will see that everytime you look at the phone with Android 2.3 or any black bar mod..
I've heard from many that had this issue, and MANY that have zero bleed, so I will be replacing it to see if it is any better.

I would just use manual brightness anyway. Not a lot of people know this but keeping your screen brightness set to automatic will drain your battery faster than running it at full brightness. It's been tested on multiple Android devices.
Also have the bleed issue, has anyone heard if LG or Tmo have acknowledged the problem?

Am I unlucky with screen bleed?

I've went through about 5 different phones and they all have the same screen bleed. Tried multiple stores in case they were from the same batch. Am I just unlucky? Or do all G2X have screen bleeds and the ones that report they don't really arent as picky as I am?
Your picky.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
the mythical perfect screen you hunt doesn't exist
you're clearly being too picky. my screen has a bit of bleed, but i'll be keeping it because i'm never watching a solid black screen, at full brightness, in a dark room. so it doesnt really matter that much to me.
You're not unlucky, and you're not too picky. I just returned my 3rd g2x today because of backlight bleeding. All 3 were so bad that the bleeds were reaching into the center of the screen. Despite what people say about 'You can't see it unless you're in the dark' is not completely true. The last 2 phones had a stripe of brown across the bottom that was blurring out text at the lower half the screen when on a white background. The 3rd was outright yellow.
Upon returning my 3rd, the manager at the store pulled about the remaining 5 they had in stock. She went in the back and checked all 5 in the dark, and all of them had screen bleeding worst than the one I was returing. The manager agreed that it was unacceptable and sent all 5 back. She's calling me when the next shipment comes in, and she's going to personally go through every phone until she finds one that works right.
As for being too picky, that's bull. These guys on the forums will tell you you're being overboard, but the phone is $500 or $199 and a 2 year contract. I know some people have cash to throw around, and the value of the dollar means nothing. But for me, $200 is a lot of money, 2 years of my life is a lot of time, and for me to just accept something that isn't built right because i'm being "too picky" is a load of crap.
If this was a $5000 tv I bet you'd be singing a different tune, but since it's a $500 phone I should just suck it up. Screw that, i'll return 80 of them if I have to. Hopefully someone at corporate will get the hint and call LG about it.
The manager told me that LG already notified all the T-Mobile reps to make them aware of it. So it's not just a matter of pickiness, this a clear cut QA issue on LG's end.
Backlight bleeding is common. It's common because of poor production, and absolutely no QA in Korea. They're shipping these phones out before the glue finishes drying, and thus we're left with crap. I read another post on here that a guy had glue around the edges of the screen. LG needs to get it together, this is out of hand.
The phone is sexy though, and I suggest returning it until you get the one that works right. I've considered giving up and waiting for another, but all the other phones coming up have custom roms and locked bootloaders. I'm uninterested.

I saw a post a few days ago of someone who went to replace their phone in the store. They tested the new one in the store and were satisfied, but then got home and locked themselves in a closet or something and saw some bleed and they were upset.
If you're like this person, then ya, you're way too picky. This is an LCD screen, not LED.

LG Electronics also makes the iPhone 4 LCD. And it doesn't have this issue.
I don't understand why anyone would accept what is for certain a quality issue. Do you really just not care that much? I have had many phones over the years and none of them have had these issues. I even pulled all of them back out (yes I have kept them all) and checked them under the exact same conditions as the g2x I sent back yesterday. Do you know how many of them had screen bleed? ZERO none of them. I'm not talking about standard extra defused light coming through an LCD. I'm talking about multiple spots were light was coming through because it simply wasn't sealed correctly.
To the people saying you are being too picky or it doesn't matter or they are all like that either don't know what they are talking about, saying that because they don't like you, or just like to be screwed out of their money.
Have a little pride and demand that it is right. I will sent back every single phone I get until I get one that is correctly built.
i paid 500 for mine but i just don't wanna go there get another one and have it be worse than mine and then make it an issue for me to keep going back till i get a good one since the one i have has been straight aside from the minor backlight issue which i can't see unless im in the dark on that black screen
I have to say that my first phone had it bad. I could tell in every app I tried. I saw it before there were threads like these. I returned it.
I did however buy one from the store and went into the neighboring store's bathroom with the light off, total darkness and the screen looked good.
Obviously these are the first batch and may not be perfect but I'd like to think "most" are under normal conditions. I know I wouldn't stand for it. The screen is something you always will use. It would bother me.
If your store doesn't have a good one, then don't buy it. I guess it is save to say there are batches of bad phones out there. The demo unit at the store near me looked great compared to the SGS4G sitting next to it and there were no bleeding. My unit was clean too.
I'd recommend wearing a hoodie and checking before you leave.

Yea my neighbor has an iPhone 4 and I can see some. Nothing major and he probably doesn't even notice it. I think every LCD phone I had, had some bleeding... hence why I love my Nexus One Amoled... but it had its problems too.
I'd rather have a small bleed then no multitouch or a locked bootloader
out of 5 g2x I've seen, all of them had similar bleeds (similar bleed size, similar pattern at each corner), with 1 of them being the worst. All 5 of them are pretty much the same.
with that being said, I think you should really just settle with one. NOT because I am saying you are picky, but that statistically the chance of getting one with minimal bleed is very, very, very low.
I truly have no idea how some people on this forum are getting g2x's with almost no bleed. If you ask me, it's either we have different judgment, or they just don't test their devices in a totally dark room with >50% phone brightness.

So what is your point? The light bleed existed on the initial batch of iPhone 4's, people complained, and the manufacturing process was fixed. If people don't complain then it won't get fixed. If LG can fix it for the iphone, they can fix it for this phone.
i had to go into my dark room and set my screen to 100% to see any bleed...but how often will you keep your screen at full brightness in complete dark? when it's dark i dim my screen, the bleed is nearly impossible to see in typical conditions.
Each of the phones I had i didnt look at them in a completely dark room. But just looking at the screen under normal office light at 50% display and they were all quite noticable. I dont think I'm being too unreasonable but maybe I am.
I think i'll just suck it up and live with it. I honestly wouldnt mind it if the bleeding is in the top two corners where its generally the white status bar but its pretty noticeable in the bottm two. I'll probably just end up waiting until HTC Sensation comes out and sell this.

Nice try again. Apparently you paid no attention to the date of the posts on that thread. The initial post was 4 days ago (3 when I initially made mention of it).
Of course, I must also point out that your initial claim was that iphone4s "do not have this problem". They definitely have had this "problem" and sill do.
Just give up or admit you're wrong. Quit clinging to this completely inaccurate claim.

Honestly I didn't notice that. I stand corrected!
I'm sorry to ask such a tyro question. What is screen bleed? What does it look like?

[Q] Can anyone say they have NO lightbleed?

Received my replacement transformer the other day and thought it was OK on initial inspection, in a darkened room.
But actually, when you pump the brightness up to full, looking at a black screen (downloaded a black jpeg to test it as in the galley app the software buttons fade out so you get a true picture) it is actually no better than the one I sent back.
So my question is, using that system - black jpeg, full brightness, is there anyone out there who has no light bleed, particularly around the bottom left hand corner?
Cos if there is, it looks like this baby is going back to Comet for a second replacement, and if everyone has it, then I guess I will have to assume its a manufacturing 'feature' and just live with it.
Cheers for your help folks.

I mean... you went through all that to find a defect? I know that we all want the perfect device but how often will the light bleed actually affect us?
I think I also have light bleed but I had to tilt the damn thing to find it and it seemed perfectly fine before reading these posts.
Does it really bother you that much that you're even willing to go through the hassle of exchanging it?
I first noticed it when I booted the tablet with the lights out in the room. I don't have any issues in normal use and it doesn't bother me enough that I'd want to send it back.
I just got my 32GB. I didn't notice it during the daytime, but at night I do see a little towards the top. But not to the point where it bothers me.
Got a couple of small spots along the bottom that i could live with only noticeable if you have light off and brightness at full, one of the corners has quite bad bleed, can see it on darkish screens without even turning lights off or even down.
Considering whether to return it.

'All that' is not really all that to be honest. I downloaded a black jpeg and looked at it whilst sat here watching the telly, took about 30 seconds in all to show up a significant level of light leaking in from the bottom corner.
If you have to tilt your unit to find any light then its not going to be a problem for you. On mine it casts a glow on the bottom corner when I am sat with it on my lap in a normal living room with the table lamp on.
For me there is nothing wrong with wanting a perfect device, I am pretty sure that's what I paid for. Had it not been perfect then Comet would have it marked as 'seconds, and would have charged me quite a bit less.
As it is, it arrived direct from the factory with this defect, and as I have said before, on a £100 cheapie off eBay I would probably put up with it, but not at 400 quid.
Add to this, unless Asus receives units back to their factory with these issues pointed out they will be unaware of the problem and have no incentive to tighten up their manufacturing process.
I don't know what is going on over in the US, but I do know they are far less accepting of poor service/goods than we are in the UK, and if these problems exist in units being shipped over there they will be flying back to Asus at a great rate of knots, and this is with the Us Transformer costing CONSIDERABLY less than it does over here.
If you have a good one, I am happy for you, and slightly envious of you. I wish I did.
On the blue boot screen or setting screen there is massive light bleeding on right and left side (about 2 inches wide). However, when there is an image on the screen it looks fine. Unfortunately I don't have a wireless connection at home so I haven't tried putting any movies or 'black' jpegs on the device for further testing; but will do so tomorrow. My hope is that when playing movies it looks fine and if so I won't worry about it. Screen has good fidelity; speakers seem decent and unit feels lighter than the acer/xoom. Also build doesn't seem that bad.
-
So far only immediate reactions are: Why didn't amazon put something in the shipping box like bubble wrap and what the @!#)(* no charging light? Even my $10 cell phone has a charging light.
I asked Asus phone support. They said there should be NO light bleed. I said a couple of times that mine is very slight, from the lower left corner, and he repeated that there shouldn't be any at all and that I should get a replacement.
I'm requesting a replacement anyway as my compass is broken, hopefully I can get one into my local Comet store so I can see for myself first.
A picture, as they say, paints a thousand words.
(and just to rub salt in the wound, discovered the gap along the side of the screen mentioned in another thread! 'Hello, is that Comet? I have something I need to discuss.....')

Just wanted to chime in and say I have it too. At first I didn't notice it because I had just got it.. but after a while I found my eye being drawn down to the edges where there was light bleeding through. Its an unwelcome distraction and this unite will no doubt be exchanged for another one.

Q Does anyone elses do this? rings on screen with light pressure

if I apply light pressure on back of tablet about two inches above asus logo it looks like something is pushing against the screen you get all those rings and what looks like a rainbow effect.
I noticed it when docked and moving the screen back and forth the same effect occurs.. is this just cos the unit is thin and flexes, does anyone else see this behaviour?

I tried what you did and I don't see anything, how big/noticeable is this 'rainbow effect' you're talking about on your tablet? Something doesn't seem right.
Going further if I simply press on the touch screen in that area I get the same effect somethings definitely wrong, when screen is on I get big yellow splodges from the backlight. The screen must be moving in the chassis I guess

I think you're describing the general effect of applying pressure to an LCD screen. They all do it to some extent. Unless the effect is permanent, it's nothing to worry about.

I disagree, I tried and failed to replicate what he did. Also, my tablet has the bleeding issue too, so I don't think those are directly related. (I have light spots and edge bleeding, but don't have the rainbow effect.)
Its so annoying cos its ones of the newer serial numbers and there is hardly any bleed or anything, but in normal use touching the screen in one place seems to compress something and I get rainbow and big blobs of yellowy light about 1 inch above where I touch/press or if I move screen back or forward in dock or press against back of tablet.. Lets see what asus cs say.. Might have to go for refund and defect to samsung but I don't want to

iPad2 has some of the same issues, light bleed, etc and some new ones, cracking screens. It is tough to make a screen that is high res, light weight, thin, and can stand up to people poking at it all day long.

[Q] Is anyone else getting black spots on the screen?

I got my Infuse when it released 4 months ago and I've been in love with it ever since. Just last month I have noticed a huge black spot on my screen. The spot is located on the bottom right hand side of the screen (the app/widget spot just above where the applications app). It has a diameter of about 1cm and is only extremely noticeable when the screen is dark. I know this is not a software problem since I have taken pictures with the camera and the spot is not in the pictures and I have taken SS of the screen and the spot refuses to show up on those SS also. It is a hardware problem and I'm getting worried that I am not the only one.
I've been trying to ignore it but my paranoia is getting worse since the spot is so huge. Upon closer inspection (looking at a black picture), I've been able to make out a LOT of black spots on the screen too. These black spots are not as big as the one HUGE spot but are definitely noticeable now that I can see them. These spots have a diameter of a mm and there must be at least 20 of these black spots. I've asked if my gf could see the huge spot and she was able to see it and soon after she could spot all of the tiny black spots too.
I want to do a manufacturer's warranty but it's a little too soon and I'm afraid it will be difficult for Samsung to reproduce (assuming that they are lazy and just don't want to help me) and also because I can't take SS of it so I don't have the proof unless they see it for themselves. Please help me!
I wish I could take a SS for you guys to prove it but I don't have a camera that would be good enough to capture these things. My phone is probably the only camera that I have.
Sounds like an LCD leak. If it is, it will probably only get worse. Try to use your warranty or insurance.

Go ahead and do a manufacturers warranty.
Samsung doesn't care, as long as it's not your fault (LCD leak isn't your fault, it can happened on it's own), they'll repair it (most likely by putting a new SAMOLED+ screen on your phone, they have millions).
Also, it's never to early to do a warranty, if there's something wrong with something you own, you should always have the manufacturer fix it.
LCD leak on an OLED phone....?
Whatever the problem is, I suggest claiming a warranty. I saw on the net where a guy had the same issue on a sii and they fixed it.
