[Q] Can anyone say they have NO lightbleed? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Received my replacement transformer the other day and thought it was OK on initial inspection, in a darkened room.
But actually, when you pump the brightness up to full, looking at a black screen (downloaded a black jpeg to test it as in the galley app the software buttons fade out so you get a true picture) it is actually no better than the one I sent back.
So my question is, using that system - black jpeg, full brightness, is there anyone out there who has no light bleed, particularly around the bottom left hand corner?
Cos if there is, it looks like this baby is going back to Comet for a second replacement, and if everyone has it, then I guess I will have to assume its a manufacturing 'feature' and just live with it.
Cheers for your help folks.

Glad there is somebody know knows how to test a LCD light bleed properly.
I have the exact same issue. Maybe its part of the design.

Check my post in the other light bleed thread. I'd be happy to explain more if you'd like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13478882&postcount=111

I did everything you said, and see no light bleed in mine. I just got mine today.

Has anyone noticed a problem with going from manual brightness to auto, and it not auto adjusting?

No light bleed here.

I mean... you went through all that to find a defect? I know that we all want the perfect device but how often will the light bleed actually affect us?
I think I also have light bleed but I had to tilt the damn thing to find it and it seemed perfectly fine before reading these posts.
Does it really bother you that much that you're even willing to go through the hassle of exchanging it?

I first noticed it when I booted the tablet with the lights out in the room. I don't have any issues in normal use and it doesn't bother me enough that I'd want to send it back.

I just got my 32GB. I didn't notice it during the daytime, but at night I do see a little towards the top. But not to the point where it bothers me.

Got a couple of small spots along the bottom that i could live with only noticeable if you have light off and brightness at full, one of the corners has quite bad bleed, can see it on darkish screens without even turning lights off or even down.
Considering whether to return it.

'All that' is not really all that to be honest. I downloaded a black jpeg and looked at it whilst sat here watching the telly, took about 30 seconds in all to show up a significant level of light leaking in from the bottom corner.
If you have to tilt your unit to find any light then its not going to be a problem for you. On mine it casts a glow on the bottom corner when I am sat with it on my lap in a normal living room with the table lamp on.
For me there is nothing wrong with wanting a perfect device, I am pretty sure that's what I paid for. Had it not been perfect then Comet would have it marked as 'seconds, and would have charged me quite a bit less.
As it is, it arrived direct from the factory with this defect, and as I have said before, on a £100 cheapie off eBay I would probably put up with it, but not at 400 quid.
Add to this, unless Asus receives units back to their factory with these issues pointed out they will be unaware of the problem and have no incentive to tighten up their manufacturing process.
I don't know what is going on over in the US, but I do know they are far less accepting of poor service/goods than we are in the UK, and if these problems exist in units being shipped over there they will be flying back to Asus at a great rate of knots, and this is with the Us Transformer costing CONSIDERABLY less than it does over here.
If you have a good one, I am happy for you, and slightly envious of you. I wish I did.

On the blue boot screen or setting screen there is massive light bleeding on right and left side (about 2 inches wide). However, when there is an image on the screen it looks fine. Unfortunately I don't have a wireless connection at home so I haven't tried putting any movies or 'black' jpegs on the device for further testing; but will do so tomorrow. My hope is that when playing movies it looks fine and if so I won't worry about it. Screen has good fidelity; speakers seem decent and unit feels lighter than the acer/xoom. Also build doesn't seem that bad.
-
So far only immediate reactions are: Why didn't amazon put something in the shipping box like bubble wrap and what the @!#)(* no charging light? Even my $10 cell phone has a charging light.

I asked Asus phone support. They said there should be NO light bleed. I said a couple of times that mine is very slight, from the lower left corner, and he repeated that there shouldn't be any at all and that I should get a replacement.
I'm requesting a replacement anyway as my compass is broken, hopefully I can get one into my local Comet store so I can see for myself first.

A picture, as they say, paints a thousand words.
(and just to rub salt in the wound, discovered the gap along the side of the screen mentioned in another thread! 'Hello, is that Comet? I have something I need to discuss.....')

Light bleed here as well
Just wanted to chime in and say I have it too. At first I didn't notice it because I had just got it.. but after a while I found my eye being drawn down to the edges where there was light bleeding through. Its an unwelcome distraction and this unite will no doubt be exchanged for another one.

Auto adjusting works when you turn the screen off then back on.

i feel all of you. One time I bought a car and one of the tire pressures was off by the time I got home. I took the car back to the dealer several times til they got the tire pressures right on all four tires. Took a month to get it right. The nerve of these manufacturers.

No, this is more like buying a new car and your car doors or windows not shutting fully.

[Q] Light Bleed?

I've seen some of you have said there is some 'bleeding of light' what does that mean actually? Are there holes in the casing or is it something with the screen? And how bad is it?
Edited to add: Despite the troll, a few people here have reported this problem first hand - however it appears to be small, so hopefully they got a rotten apple.
Having replaced my own LCD backlight, I can speak to it.
Basically the LED lamp sits on the very bottom of the tablet illuminating the tablet from the back (hence backlit), the light is supposed to be contained but sometimes the lamp housing may contain gaps and light will leak through those gaps. They appear as light flares across the above layers.
If you google Ipad 2 light leaks and view Images, you can see a great deal of reports with sample images of the symptom.
I'm not quite sure why companies don't just employ a rubber gasket or flap around the lamp housing to get a good light seal.

There was a comment on one of the android forums.
I noticed it when I first switched on my device, but it was late at night in a very dark room, and brightness was on full. I have brightness set to auto now, and I have never noticed this again.
I am very intolerant of defects such as this, so if I am not seeing it, it's fair to say there isn't a problem. Of course that's just my opinion, but I really don't think it is an issue.
Hold on a moment .......OK, I've just gone and stood in a dark room, and brought up the Gallery App, because it has a dark border. No backlight bleed obvious until I turned the brightness up to maximum, at which point there was a vague semi-circle of backlight just to the right of the keyboard dock. Turning the brightness down to a sensible level solved the problem.
Hope this reassures you. I should perhaps point out that I have no affiliation with Asus, or Google, and no vested interested in device sales.

It's pretty rare I think. I've only read it on a couple of occasions and as far as I know it's the only physical issue with the tablet. Everyone keeps raving about it's build quality. So, if there is any light leak in mine (when I eventually get it) I'm swapping it. Just another reason to try it in the store

I haven't seen much, so perhaps its only a few unlucky people.

No, spare me your rolleyes crap. It was people saying: My device has this problem. And some saying I'm returning it.
I've been reading a ton of sites about this device, and may have gotten confused about which site i read it on, but clearly there is no mistake when people say they have the problem, so don't accuse people of lying.
It certainly is mentioned here http://android.modaco.com/content/asus-eee-pad-transformer-transformer-modaco-com/336683/eee-pad-transformers-owners-thread-14-04-2011-first-post-updated/
"I had started to noticed light on my screen that shouldn't be there. This obviously is a backlight bleeding problem. ... the manager then took a look in the dark and he noticed it and said it was a fault with the screen and I can get a replacement."
http://www.avforums.com/forums/14430336-post46.html
"Screen. Some light bleed unfortunately (this is also being reported by other users on XDA forums/Modaco etc) - not a deal breaker, but it is there.. admittedly only noticable when using at night... Still great images though. "
(So he's probably not returning it)

That's the way led technology works, but lcd (and i think ips) uses backlights.
I have a little bit of light bleed about 1.5" up on the right hand side of the screen... It's about the size of a 5p coin.
I'm not going to worry about getting anything done about it I don't think. I only notice in in the settings screen, and I'm rarely in there. When I'm in portrait mode, I just see it as a 'glow' on the taskbar.

Ah yes, you're right. Was thinking Flouro. In any case, light is leaking reflecting off small gaps from the edges and into the upper layers.
Have you ever tried to completely seal out all light out of a room? It is insanely difficult and amazing how much gets through.

Typicaly there are two light sources - at the bottom and at the top of the screen (or on the left and on the right - my LCD monitor has it that way). Sometimes there is only one source - on the bottom mostly.
I'm not sure about this but as far as I know LED backlight works the same way - it's only at the top or bottom in most displays. Some better LCD TVs with LED backlight have more LEDs behind the screen - but it's pricy to do so I doubt tablets will have it that way.
I have a reasonable amount of light bleed on my Transformer. Areas on the horizontal and vertical near the home button.
In addition, a couple of spots on the right hand side vertical.
No major drama, called Comet and they are sending me a replacement, though not until next Thursday when they predict they will have more stock, though given what I have been reading today on various sites, that date could slip a little. Doesn't matter though, my replacement request is logged and will happen when it happens.
On the down side, by the time I get a replacement I will have spent ages getting it just how I want it.
On the up side, I get to have all the fun of setting it up again.
On a side note, having cancelled a preorder for a Xoom through PCWorld and bought the Transformer, I finally got to play with the Xoom on the shelf today.
Definitely made the right decision.
The Transformer just feels better made, and despite the fact that the Xoom has excellent viewing angles, the screen is not a patch on the Transformer, oh, and did I mention the small fact of 100 quid!
The reason I started to asks about this is because I'm a bit skittish about light bleed, having once had a monitor and the store just thinking i was nuts "there is nothing wrong with this monitor its just you" - thanks a lot! Humpf.

[Q] To RMA or not to RMA...

that is the question. I've been using my 32 GB Transformer since it arrived on May 12, and I have to say that overall I'm a huge fan. Since I have seen so much on these boards about the various QC issues, I gave my tablet the once-over almost immediately. The speakers seem fine, no SoD, etc. The only defects I found were about 4 points of light along the left and bottom of the tablet when held in landscape. These show up at about 80-100% brightness with a dark background (not a black jpg), and are not terribly invasive. However, as I use the tablet more, it is a bit annoying just to know they're there. I've also experienced a bit of screen flicker (only with Angry Birds so far), but suspect that this may be more of a software/rendering issue. So the question I have to ask myself is "Do I send it back?" I've heard a number of stories on these boards and elsewhere of people who RMA'ed, waited, and got back a poorer product than they started with. I can live with a little light bleed, but I'm not sure I want to. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
--SemTechie
I'm kind of in the same boat. I've got a single hot pixel and obvious light bleed that is mainly noticable with black/dark backgrounds. If I send it back to the retailer I could end up waiting a month or MORE for a replacement that may have the same or worse issues. And then what happens? Would the retailer take it back and keep this back-and-forth game up till I recieved a tablet that has no isses? I doubt it. I'm thinking that maybe I should call Asus and see what they have to say about the backlight bleed on the tablet.
No matter what you do you will be taken care of, if you RMA it now or in 6 months from now. Asus has great warranty support. They even pay for the shipping away to them for RMA. Most companies make you eat that cost.
Seems like the QC issues are widespread throughout the TF supply, which means the manufacturing process is flawed / needs correction. So, RMA'ing now might not yield good results. Might be better to wait a couple months to RMA, assuming that ASUS would actually address and correct the QC issues.
I've noticed some light bleed in a couple spots when cranking up the brightness, but since I don't usually have the brightness over 50% and I don't tend to stare at black backgrounds I'm just brushing it off....for now. When I read that customers are getting TF's RMA'd w/ new TF's w/out any issues, then I'll consider RMA'ing.
I am also waiting to RMA.
My HDMI port is really unreliable and the connection will be detected and dropped constantly if you touch it at all. If you jiggle it just the right way it will immediately put the tab into a SOD. I've already called ASUS to get the issue on record but I told them I'm waiting to RMA until after I've heard of other's successfully repair experiences.
I only have very minor light bleed and a tiny creak in the top left of the chassis, both a non-issues but the HDMI port sucking really bothers me.
Light bleed is pretty common to bigger ips displays. Do a search for iPad light bleed and you will see what I mean.

This is exactly the problem. People go looking for trouble, and trouble is what they'll find.
I'm having same issue. At first I didnt' want to think of it and didn't try to look for it. But whenever I start some apps and the screen is dark. I can see som light bleed on the side and one very annoying one in the middle of the screen about an inch long. I can live with the sides...but in the middle of the screen is pretty hard to accept.

Does your 8X body creak/snap? See light where screen meets body/screen not flush?

Im wondering if other people's 8X's creak when squeezing the phone sideways or on the screen after a few minutes of use? Also I can see light leaking from the bottom where the screen meets the body of the phone. Want to know if I should get an exchange tomorrow at Microsoft Store since after that I'm pretty far from any Microsoft Stores until I'm past the return date.
My volume rocker squeaks a little and also moves back and fourth when I shake the phone. At the bottom of the phone on either side of the charging port there are light leaks, and on the left and right bottom sides too, which is annoying in the dark. Tempted to take mine back to Phones4u and ask for a new one..
Got a new phone and its much better. I didn't notice if light leaks through bottom anymore, but the screen is definitely more flush though not PERFECTLY flush.
Much more solid phone and power button also has a click and is easier to press now. No more creaks now.

I'll go and exchange mine then I think. Can you take a picture of it in the dark to show if you have any light leaks and post it up? I'd be very appreciative.
My power button feels a bit odd too, it doesn't have a click and feels squidgy, was thinking that earlier. Might have a go on the replacement in store and look at it in the dark to check for light leaks.
Edit: I've attached the best picture I could get of my light leaks/screen fitting. This is with brightness at max, taken with my DSLR. Was yours this bad? I'd be interested to see if this is an issue with other 8X's or just ours.
I haven't had any problems like that with mine yet. I started using a case after the first week though. Hopefully a replacement will fix the issue for you. That's a lot of light coming through.

It is, it's awful. I'm kind of regretting getting the 8X over the 920 to be honest, the blacks seem very light on the screen and the colour seem very washed out (maybe it's just coming from an AMOLED screen that is doing it), might see what they can do for me in store today. We'll see.
Took it back today, they didn't want to replace it but they did in the end. Tried out two brand new Yellow ones in store, both had the exact same issue. Tried a black one, and it's perfect, no light leakage at all. Maybe it's an issue with the Yellow one. Poor effort HTC.
Accepted the Black one as a replacement, but I'm trying to sell it and get a 920 like I should have in the beginning. Doh!

Meh. I have the black one and its an issue all right. Yesterday, my screen totally died. Went to HTC service center today, and the light leakage and inperfect screen flush were listed as "possible user damage". If they decide to classify it as user damage, i'll be pissed.

Yes, when I had mine it creaked and the camera lens moved around a little, and the screen was a tad squishy on the bottom right...HTC consistently has awesome designs but
There is always something wrong with their build quality that is maddening.

Crack over Speaker holes
Hi guys, just to add to the build quality problems... I've just had a replacement from Phones4U of my yellow 8X. After just under a month of gentle and careful ownership i noticed a crack appeared over (and through) the holes on the back for the speaker. The crack got bigger over about a week before i had chance to go ask about it in store. to be fair to P4U, the person i spoke to was great and they swapped it out in store, even though i'd originally bought it online.
Came back to this thread to mention it and now having read everything else i'm noticing a bit of creaking when i squeeze the sides and both phones had had the squishy screen edge picture thing which i first read about being a problem on the ONE X. Not sure if that's just normal anyway though really. Oh and neither of my power buttons have clicked and i find myself missing my easy to press home button on my old iPhone 3GS!
Same again!

Well after a month (again) my replacement 8X has developed the crack in the same place.
Phones 4U are gonna swap it for a black model this time, i'm wondering if it's the yellow plastic specifically that's bad. They were less cheery and helpful with the exchange this time stating that because it's a cosmetic fault they don't usually replace them and the first time was 'a goodwill gesture'.
I'm starting to wish i'd just gone for the extra price bump for the Lumia 920 instead now. Guess i'm lucky they've replaced them at all though but i still don't think a phone should crack of it's own free will after 4 weeks! http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/icons/advanced/drive.png
They also said it's not a widespread fault that they've been made aware of, i was actually hoping someone else on here would have had the same experience to help me confirm it wasn't just bad luck or whatever. I guess everyone else just has the corners rubbing off instead!
I guess I got lucky, my blue 8X seems pretty solid and all the buttons are clicky.

Backlight bleed galaxy note pro

How much of this is to be expected?
I have a noticeable amount , of course I only noticed it when in a dark room against black backgrounds.. but it makes me wonder if I should demand another unit from amazon.

Mine has it too. bottom right side and bottom. Only visible when watching full screen video that's letterboxed. Doesn't bother me though.
I notice it gets worse when I flex the tablet by holding it in landscape by the bottom left corner so I kind of wonder if in part it is more predominant on that corner for my tablet because that's the primary way that I hold the tablet. It's not like I can flex it the other way to get rid of the bleeding completely though so I don't know if I can reverse it. If memory serves, out of the box I already had some bleed anyhow. This is my second Note Pro and the first one had bleed on the bottom as well.
I'm sure you'll get responses from some who have no light bleed, some of which actually do but it doesn't bother them and some who really do not have any bleed. It's up to you I guess if it is worth the effort and waiting to try to get a perfect one. For me it simply is not . .
Thanks.. can any one post any pictures of their tablet?

Now this really isn't an issue at all but it was pointed out by my friend. There may be other ways of noticing the same but here's how I do it.
Sit in a dark room, as dark as possible (best at night).
Increase the brightness to maximum.
Open any video on MX Player, pause it and zoom out (decrease video size) as much as possible.
Observe the corners around the chin of the device. You should see some light leaking through.
Now of course this isn't an issue you'd encounter normally but it just kinda freaked us out. Any idea what might be causing it? I have no technological knowledge about displays except for the fact that pixels are turned off for black areas in AMOLED displays. We don't have navigation keys backlight either.

There should be no light leak/bleed on an AMOLED screen phone, that is common for IPS screens.
Did you get the phone from the official site?

Yep Amazon. Funny my friend has the same issue. In fact he was the one who pointed it out first.

Doubt it's possible to have "rogue" pixels but I will have to see for myself when mine arrives. But my friend who has it never complained about it, so I have a feeling only a certain batch of them might have this issue.
There also might be a chance it's related to software, so did you try using another rom?

It certainly is weird. I mean that light bleed doesn't exactly appear to be "rogue" pixels either. Plus it's rather too dim to be noticed unless you're sitting in an absolutely dark room with your brightness maxed out and about 75% of the screen totally black (which would rarely ever happen). I believe it could be possible that every unit has this but never really has been noticed by anyone.
The issue isn't that great for me to switch to another ROM and test it. Just wanted to bring this to everyone's notice. I'm on OOS 5.1.11 (rooted)
Yes, I ordered 2 and they were both defect so I sent them back. I did not send them back because of this tho, however i also recognized that both of them had really bad uniformity issues and it looked like the edges were bleeding. I observed that on a white background. I am living in germany and ordered from amazon, the second one got dust in it's front camera lense, when it arrived and the first one was emitting a loud static noise, like coil whine. It's insane, I just want a proper working phone. Not sure, whether I should order a 3rd one.

Wow that's a really big let down on Amazon's part to send defective units, and that too twice! However, I checked my screen for any such uniformity issues both on black and white but didn't find any such except for this one. And I repeat again, this is barely noticeable and is visible only when you're in absolute dark, with maximum brightness on black screen.
Although such a thing is ignorable but it's something which isn't really expected from OnePlus.

Yea, yours is definately fine. I'd be happy, if I got one like that.
I ordered from Amazon, because I heard the OnePlus support is really unprofessional sometimes and certain things take ages.
Did you guys order it from the official store?
Edit: That being said I wouldn't worry that much about it, if I were you.

Not worrying over it at all! After all, who keeps the brightness at maximum in a dark room.
We ordered it from Amazon India.

I ordered mine from Aliexpress and the comments were all positive. I hope mine won't be defective, I spat my soul out financially for it. :silly:

Hehehehe.... I'm sure it'll be just fine! And congrats on getting your new phone (even if you're about to get it). Nevertheless it's a very decent device :good:
