[Q] Three 3 UK users please read - HTC One S

Are you having issues where the phone's internet cutting out? I'm trying to work out if its an issue with the phone or the signal in Manchester.
The phone will be working fine for texts and phone calls then when I go to use Internet radio, Marketplace or Internet browser quite often the internet will drop out.

Hi no .
My phone is behaving but does have the 3g to H problem where it flies between the 2 . Although this does seem not as bad as other users are experiencing
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium

Its literally driving me insane. Its about 6/10 times I go to use the internet it wont work! But if I do get it to stream it seems to be ok.
I'm considering going for the ONE X instead getting sick of the problems with the S.. Shame really as I love the size!

Hard reset and see how it acts after that .
Most of the niggles I had went after I did that.
The S for me is a keeper for a while , screen is great , battery life is amazing . Have you called 3 to see if there's an issue

Got mine today from three. Will report back if I notice anything. Three can slow data down I believe depending on usage on a network. Being in a city might have something to do with it.

Be grateful you get signal. I get jack sh*t in manchester with vodafone haha, always have.

Well I unlocked my bootloader last night, didn't end up putting any ROMs on it but had to start again with my Apps everything was working perfectly when I went to download everything (This is in Sale, about 5 miles from where I work). I even managed some Battle Field 3 online gaming via personal hotspot on my PC.
It was only late on last night I starting having an issue.. was it an app I installed I wonder? I will experiment further.
Shame its networked locked, was going to led it to my friend to try with his Vodfone sim to see how he gets on with it.

Its not the PHONE WOooh! Three have just called, problem with the mast in my area, fixed by the 27th. I can deal with that. And there I was deleting apps etc.

Not to deflate your balloon but I have same prob. I have a fairly good Three signal where I live NE of York. Put the sim out of my One S into Defy+ and I get good signal. Put sim back into One S and back to 1 or 2 bars. I took it back to Three in York but with full signal in York had a hard time explaining my prob. So the assistant typed on the computer ..... guess what she said ....
" problem with the mast in my area, fixed by the end of the week"
Now that is one coincidence is it not? That said even if there was an issue with the 'mast' doesn't explain why the Defy+ has the normal good signal with no signal loss as per One S
Micro sim will work in Defy+ if you place it correctly over the connecting pins!
There are others on here with similar problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588345

There is definitely an issue with the current radio firmware as I still have the jumping 3G to H sign but even so at home on the Wirral or in Sale Manchester the internet is spot on, even if it only has 3/4 bars where as in work its full signal but the internet drops out all over the show.
I think it could well be a coincidence that there is an issue with the mast you're on, does the Desire support the faster HSDP+ internet? Maybe its that?

Not sure about the Desire.
I think it's probably the a firmware issue as you say. I know I have a good Three signal where I live as I've tried their PAYG service. Put either the payg or the monthly contract sim, both from Three, in the Defy+ and get a good signal readout. The signal seems to bounce all over. One minute I'm on full bars and the next lost connection. In York where signal is stronger than mine in the sticks there is no issue. Tried with little success to explain the problem to the assitant in Three shop but with full bars on phone she thought I was some sort of fool Mind you when she played the mast card asked why then the Moto Defy+ had no issues with signal
I'm hoping there will be a patch from HTC at some point though they maybe need to be made aware of the issue. I would like to try a T-Mobile sim in the One S but suspect it's locked to Three. I'm sure it's a network provider issue.

[Q] HTC Sensation rubbish reception

Is anyone else having reception issues with the HTC sensation I had previous HTC and have all suffered from this problem I thought by now they would have sorted this issue out.
Also I have used the camera a few times and the phone just turns off.
My signal is full. Someone mentioned in another threat he replaced sim card and problem solved.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
Sounds like a faulty unit to me.
I have same problem - in my room it tends to go from 1 bar to full all the time - downstairs its goes from on to off all the time, rather annoying !
Got a brand new sim card so cant being that, but so many people
have complained about it cant be one fault handset - its just
faulty design maybe??
This is my second unit and I have tried 3 different sim cards no change. This is what made me take back the original HTC Desire. Looks like this is going back all previous phones I would get 3G in my home and work now I am getting gprs or Edge in the same locations.
I have missed a few calls tonight because of the handset reception goes to none.
just popped my t-mobile sim in it and it seems fine -
it bounces up and down but by 1 bar maximum!
Got my brothers sony play on vodafone - hes getting 4 bars when im getting 0-3 bars.
So maybe it some kind of interaction between vodafone signal and this phone???
said it before will add again i get poor reception (gprs) with vodafone sim but great/better with t-mobile sim. Gonna request new sim. put sim in my desire and get the same response. must be the sim. i also think a new radio update would fix the reception problems. if HTC unlocked the bootloader we'd know for sure.
Mines been playing up signal wise, ive just taken the sim out and put it back in and its working alot better. Weird.
Interesting. I'm a new Voda customer and I have appauling reception now where I had a good one with O2. However signal goes on and off all the time.
My phone also reboots if I take more than a couple of photos.
All sounds like software to me but I'm going to try a new handset and if that fails maybe change to Samsung, not happy with HTC pushing out such poor software on a cutting edge phone, who tested it???
Yeap, rubbish reception. Keeps coming and going even in the same location!
Awful!!!!!
Just to throw in my experience with it;
I'm getting identical performance to what I got on my Nexus One (also on Vodafone obviously, you can't compare signal on one carrier against another and blame it on the phone...)
1-2 bars of HSPA in my home in Bristol
3-4 bars of HSPA in my home in Cardiff
3-4 bars of Edge in my friend's house in Cardiff
Signal on the train journey Bristol-Cardiff also the same. HSPA through Newport, Edge/GPRS through a lot of the fields and nothingness. I do the journey a lot so I know the sections where I can load up a new article or webpage
So far it is identical to what I've been getting for the last year and a half with the N1. I know there were signal issues with the N1 when it was released but those were solved with updates from Google and more stuff in custom roms. I honestly don't have any experience of any issue affecting the Sensation's signal.
I was with T-Mobile when I had my Desire, and now I've moved to Vodafone for my Sensation. Reception with Vodafone is better everwhere that I've been so far, and I see the "H" connection symbol more frequently. However, I do get the "rising and falling signal bars for no particular reason" problem that others are seeing, but it's no worse than I experienced for the 14 months that I had my Desire.
I called Vodafone earlier about the numerous issues with the Sensation, this being one of them. Apparently there have been some reception issues in and around London in the last few days (they tracked my calling location when I called them, stalkers) but should now be resolved. I seriously doubt this is the issue as I had no reception while the phone was sat next to an unmentionable other device on Vodafone which had full signal.
They told me to take it into a store to discuss the issues before returning it within the 7 day period, which I will do at lunch time, but I have zero expectations for this!
mine has been fine tbh, more or less always 3 or 4 bar. does drop for no reason sometimes... but not often at all. only problem i have had so far is the wifi not working properly sometimes
Yet another phone that can do everything except phone calls?
Average/mediocre signal would be a huge drawback. I will wait for some more feedback, otherwise I will opt for another device, even though I have never had any doubts until this issue arose.
ok - been testing at work as we are a vodafone buisness company and have about
200 htc trophy sitting in our cupboard.
got one out with my sim card, a old vodafone one and brand new vodafone one.
Walked round the whole building phone to phone and the
htc sensation was actually stable reception, better then the htc trophy. (though only a bar difference)
There i have conclude my issue are where i live the reception.
(Though im going to do more testing at home tonight with my pro sony play)
I was curious, vodafone do a signal boost, but its £50 for those under £40 month contract.
Has anyone had any success with getting the price down on these?
I would happily pay £20 for one if i knew it would give me full signal around my house.
Im so happy with the phone i dont want to return it !
I'll post later about my tests
I politely said to the nice lady in the Vodafone shop I didn't want to buy a sure signal as a new customer and that I was on a high contract. I paid £20 but its taken off my 1st payment so got it for free. If it supposed to get perfect signal in your home and they check before you sign up then its only fair.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
Ps I get perfect signal with the thing. Using it now to post. Pity it I can't use it at work.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
Phone is now in the process of being returned to Vodafone. Great phone let down by poor reception :-( The lady on the phone said they have had a few returns of late for the same reason so I know im not the only one. Looks like it will be back to my old phone till I find something that takes me fancy.
From other reports (lots) the phone signal is unreliable and I dont think its just a network issue. I can watch mine go from full to nothing and back up again without moving or touching it. I have the camera->reboot issue on mine too that others are reporting so I think there's a bad batch. I'm replacing my handset today with little hope of it being different. I also know someone with a Sure Signal (£20 in store) who has had no problems at all. I'm on a 40/pcm deal so going to push for one for free for the hassle of going back to the shop but I get the same signal issue pretty much everywhere, including central London earlier this week.
Very disappointing start with Vodafone and with my 7th or 8th HTC phone. I really wish I'd kept my Desire now until this model had been out for a few months, lesson learned.

4G lit up but no internet?

So inside my apartment I can make calls, but no internet. There's definitely some static and the person on a land line on the other end said every now and then the call wasn't clear. Literally outside my apartment I get 25Mbps 4G LTE speeds. Weird. I guess my apartment is super insulated? LOL no, it's California the walls are paper thin. What gives?
My wife's iPhone on AT&T works fine inside apparently. My EVO on Sprint works really well.
I don't know if there's any special setting or number to dial to acquire different radio towers...I don't know. But here's the most troubling of all. Why does my 4G (and sometimes 4G LTE) icon light up when I don't have internet?
It tries to connect and all but it's spotty and just fails. I literally can't use internet inside my apartment unless it's on WiFi of course...Yet my wife's iPhone on AT&T can and so can my EVO on Sprint.
I will be testing all around my neighborhood and the San Francisco area...But I keep on Sprint for not having LTE...But if I can't even use the damn phone on AT&T consistently I guess slower speed is better than no speed.
Anyone else with this issue? I'm curious since it's a new phone, new radio, etc. Is it known to have issues indoors?
this sounds similar to some of the problems others are pointing out in all those threads complaining about wi-fi. various fixes being offered. also at least one person had said htc is aware of the problem and claiming there will be a fix by the end of may. you may want to check the other threads.
Mobile data on in settings??

Yes it's on. It's just really bad inside my apartment and even on my porch (bad as in doesn't work and I have to use WiFi)...I thought maybe some sort of dead zone but again my wife gets signal with her iPhone. I hope it is something that gets fixed. If I can get this amazing 4G in my apt as well as down the block, I'll be a very happy camper.
If I can't use my phone in my apt ill be uh well I might be going back to sprint

I was with sprint, good thing i left. I have used more data in 2-3 days than i did with sprint in a month. Lol
Yea I would call AT&T. I think your phone may have a bad 4G chip. I had to send a phone back for every 4G issue in the book.
I just wish AT&T LTE was 25+mbs were I live.
I'm on 4G now inside. I didn't move the phone at all. It was on WiFi and after turning it off on then off a few times the 4G picked up. I see it now as HSPA+ and sometimes it bounces to LTE. But it seems to be working...at least long enough to post this message which is an improvement...
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Walked around ny apt. Into the room I had no signal in before for sure... Seems ok. Bars dropped to one but now back in bed I have 3.
Also tested GPS directions today for fun and every few blocks it would lose GPS signal.
Never had such issues on Sprint and I'm not in the boonies...I'm in silicon valley of all places lol.
I don't know...how can you test for bad 4G chip? How can you test signal strength and what do I tell AT&T and what can they do for me? Or will they just say I'm unfortunately in a bad area?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
just a comment. i have not had your problem, but i've been following these threads wondering if the problem will eventually turn up for me. i've placed the widgets for mobile and wifi on one of my screens so i can access these easily. turning on mobile while wifi is on does not appear to overrride wifi, but turning wifi on while mobile is on appears to override mobile, as the 3g/h signal for at&t disappears. i'm doing this from home, so i don't know if it works the same way upon leaving home, but maybe... i should also add that i'm on an int'l one x using at&t prepaid.
Played with it some more. Here's how it works. When on WiFi it uses WiFi like it should and doesn't use 4G/mobile network.
The icon for 4G is lit. However, I looked under settings this time more carefully. It says disconnected underneath. If I turn off WiFi it attempts to connect to mobile network but fails. Endless loop.
I turned off everything. Turned on airplane mode. Turned off airplane mode (black box notification pops up with "preparing SIM card" and goes away). The mobile network connects now.
Right now my signal icon seems to switch back and forth from no bars with an X to 2 with 4G and LTE lit. I can't post this message when there are zero bars, so the icon I guess is now accurate. I'm not moving, I don't know why reception would be bad or off/on....can any other electronics cause well known interference?
But at least I could connect. I'm not sure if it was luck or if turning on airplane mode made it easier to reset itself.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I know my speekers at home seem to cause some interference, but the phone win's so then all you hear is a crap load of buzzing.
How I would test for this is to go to a AT&T store and do a "vs" on # bars/holding bars and the DBM rating under "about phone">"status".
If they are both the same then you may need to call AT&T about this. (I hope you don't have to call them 10 times like I did with the big red.)
Tried turning off my speakers here...Still bad. I mean the speedtest won't even complete. I'm stuck on the upload, the download was .74Mbps... 185ms ping. The signal isn't consistent. It says LTE then it goes away. I'm just bouncing around between HSPA, LTE, and nothing at all. Despite the phone not moving...This thing just can't stop hunting for a network.
Under the battery use, clicking on the graph expands it and shows the "mobile network signal" and the bar is 90% or more all yellow and some gaps of nothing even. Some slivers of red.
EVERYTHING else about the phone is amazing...It's just behaving as if I was in the middle of no where or something, but I'm in a small city.
I now know why my friend is ditching AT&T for Sprint I guess...But I'm screwed there too, no LTE and ugly phone design. It's like the HTC One is just some giant tease. A mythical Unicorn. Magic dragon. I just keep chasing it, but I don't think I'm ever gonna catch it
sprint is going to have its version of the one x - the updated evo, i believe, due out this month.
but you should just take your phone back to at&t. others have done so and gotten replacements.
So does it act like this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDxJoGv3FLA&feature=channel&list=UL
If so, you likely have a bad phone.
so it's a thing? like i can just roll in and be like "i think this phone is broken..." and i'll get a new one? and it's common?
okie dokie. i'll go do it tomorrow.
my internet is kinda like that video. slow and connection is lost.
BUT i have seen it really fast on the speedtest.net app.
on a side note, i did a factory reset and since (just about an hour now) i have not yet seen the constant connect/disconnect issues that i did before.
so it's pretty slow inside my apartment but it's at least consistent. outside it was fast on the LTE. 15Mbps down on the speedtest.net app. again the connection did not drop.
so i can deal with a little slow inside... in the bathroom the densest part of my apartment it was down to 1 bar but still, the mobile network was connected and despite it taking foooooreever to download an app, the play store at least did not fail on the download.
so better, but not perfect.
trying the speed test right now, it failed. thing says 4g lte up top too...why it would fail when the thing says it has signal, i just don't know.
can a phone be broken in this manner? intermittently work? i would say then at that rate its the area. bad signal in the area. ...and if i went into the store and said i want a new phone, i feel as if though they would just say it's the area you're in and the phone is fine... but how is it bad signal when it says LTE on there? and when every other device (a phone on Sprint and my wife's iPad and iPhone on AT&T) work fine? i can't imagine it's a bad area or apt. insulation. but how can the phone be bad if it works "some" of the time?
anyway. i guess i'll go see if i can trade it in.
Mobile network turning on and disconnected with 3 bars 4G LTE
I experienced the same problem after using HTC One X for the first day. I was able to get almost 30 M download and 26 M upload in my house on May 6th but lost the connection to mobile network on May 7th at the same location. When I turn off Wi-Fi, phone tried to connect to mobile network but went into the loop of turning on,disconnect while mobile network button is on. I went through 3 AT&T tech service even got a new sim and did factory reset but the problem just won't go away. The last AT&T tech service told me it is a defected device which I really don't agree. I think it is more an issue with HTC One X working with AT&T 4G LTE. I hope HTC & AT&T can solve this problem soon.

[Q] complete signal loss

Iv had the AT&T One X since the 4th and so far I love it! I haven't had any wifi issues or bootloops or anything, the only problem I'm having is the phone will randomly lose signal completely (0 bars, little x next to the signal) and wont get it back unless I put it into airplane mode and turn it back off, or reboot the phone. In the 6 days Iv had it it's lost signal 3 times, once on the road where I normally get at least 3-4 bars, and the other 2 happened at some point over night while I was asleep. Has anyone else been having this problem? Also do you think it's a software/radio problem that can be fixed in a update, or would it be hardware in which case I should take it to the store and exchange for a new one.
I've had this problem myself. Had the phone for 19 days now and I think it's happened to me 3 or 4 times.
I can guarantee it's fixable with a software update, even if the problem is hardware-related. At the very least, the software could detect the lack of signal and automatically cycle in and out of airplane mode to fix the problem without user interaction. But I'm sure whatever fix we get will be much more reliable than that.
WHEN we get the fix is another question...
Thanks for the reply. I figured it might be a software issue since you can cycle airplane mode and get it back and I don't really want to take it down to the AT&T store for an exchange in fear I wined up not able to set up gvoice or start getting wifi issues and the like lol. so far the signal drops are far and few in between making it an annoying issue rather than a critical one, and I read we've got root now so even if HTC/AT&T twiddle their thumbs and pretend nothings wrong I'm sure the community can save the day lol
I would swap it out Azure. My first HOX did exactly this, and I saw it reported elsewhere on a number of other devices. To me that says it's most likely a bad radio flash on some handsets. I suppose you could try and flash the RUU that was posted, as it most likely includes the radio as well.
I got tired of all my calls going directly to VM without ringing. And not being able to send out texts. My replacement works much better (or rather, how it should've from the beginning).

Was this problem intermittent?
My phone has been doing this randomly, except it never went to voicemails, just hung up after like 30 seconds.
Wondering if I should switch it out also.
Had this problem for a day. Took my phone to the at&t store and they changed out the sim card and I haven't had a problem since.

I never thought about the sim card being a possible problem...might run up to the store when I get the chance and swap my sim out and see if that fixes it, if not I'll just swap the device out and hope all's well
The CSR actually swapped a new micro sim first, since the one provided via online sales was an older one (most likely from the iphone 4/4s batch). It didn't seem to fix the problem though.
And yeah, the problem was very intermittent. One second it would be working fine, and the next it would show the "x". Sometimes the bars would come back immediately, other times it wouldn't until I rebooted or cycled airplane mode. Luckily it happened while I was at the store; it's much easier to convince a sales rep to swap a phone when they can witness the issue(s).
Yeah it's only happened to me twice since I got it on the 4th... it'll be very hard for me to convince them that there's an issue haha... maybe I'll head down there if it happens at a time when I'm not in class or something. I'm sure if I mention returning it/their policy I'll get a swap.

next time my phone drops signal I'll take it into the store and see about a sim swap in hopes that'll fix the issue if not then I'll reluctantly swap the unit out (I've grown rather attached to this one xD)
**EDIT**
strange...woke up today and my phone completely lost signal again, normally there's a few days between each event but this is the first time it's happened twice in a row =\
So it happened again, I'm going to go get it switched... but it says on the Mobile network section of settings, "Disconnected because service is unavailable."
There is clearly almost full signal strength, and I have never been without service where I live.
I was expereincing constant network drops all of yesterday due to an outage. However, it's back to normal for me today. So it may be possible there's an outage near you as well.
I think it is more AT&T than your phone. I was in down town buffalo at a swim meet with 5 bars of hspa+ on my blackberry bold that has a great radio. I had data but it was slow dial up slow. There were maybe 100-200 people at the meet and it was at a community college. The only other time I had this was when I was in a car that was driving by the buffalo bills stadium. Voice worked but I had no data. I guess too many people using their cell phones.
Definitely not AT&T, my SE Xperia x10 worked perfectly fine, never had any trouble with signals.
I also encounter the intermittent signal drops on my 4 days old AT&T one x.
It seems to me that the One x doesn't hold signal as good as the iphone, my 4 and 4s usually get around 2 bars in some really remote locations of the building I work. But the One X just drops signal completely. I'll see if I can do a sim swap like some others suggested.
I'm starting to think it could be an issue with lte phones because the same thing was happening to me on my galaxy note with 2 different sim cards and 2 different devices and now it's happening on my hox
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
it has happened to me 3 times in 5 days. All 3 times I was either:
1. in a poor reception area and it came back on its own, i did not have to use airplane mode.
2. was using BT streaming in car and using car charger, once car charger was unplugged, signal came back.
One X has issues
Definitively problems with the phone.
I have three.
They just drop signal completely. One will work, the other will not. Only way the signal will come back is if you turn the phone on and off again. I love everything about this phone....except it isn't a very good phone.
Also, typically when I turn the phone back on, that is when I get my text messages. Nice.
Yeah I figured out it happens when I lose signal (a couple buildings on my schools campus don't get reception), and then the signal won't come back until I reboot or airplane mode.. this is after a sim swap.
Oh and do I need the box my phone came in to swap it?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I have had this issue as well being on the Rogers (Canada) network. I started a thread as well and my theory is there may be a hardware issue reading the SIM cards.
Every now and then I get a "preparing SIM" message pop up on my screen. Also, I lost signal once and in frustration I slapped the phone into my palm VOILA! signal came back full.
This is the second One-X I've gotten from Rogers so there may be a design flaw somewhere. The problem is this behavior only pops up intermittently and cannot be recreated at will. This makes troubleshooting very difficult and practically unprovable in the eyes of providers.
Hopefully there are more reports of this problem and the carriers push back on HTC to resolve the problem.

[Q] Cell reception - What's your experience?

Hello One-S users!
I recently got myself an unbranded One-S here in the Netherlands. I came from the LG 2x that I've had since the day it was available. Been experimenting a lot with different ROM's and BB, with different results across the board. Overall though the 2x has been a very nice phone to have and use, albeit not with the stock ROM's. Reception has been very good, probably the best of all the phones I've owned.
And now there's the new One-s... I've been using it for a few days so I won't go into details on battery life, user experience and all that stuff that needs a few days before making any useful conclusion. Except for reception!
I live in a particular area where there's very bad signal and only two towers in the whole area. The One-S seems to really struggle to get AND keep connection to the network. Actually, when used indoors (at home) it is impossible to get any signal at all, whereas the 2x and my girlfriends iPhone4 have no problems at all. Not great reception, with breakups during calls, but at least the work. The One-S doesn't. I've been seeing this behavior outdoors at other locations as well, around where I work I have had no reception issue's with the 2x, the One-S shows really spotty reception.
I'm on the latest OTA which is 1.78.401.2
What's your take on this, do you have any reception issue's?

Not great reception, with breakups during calls, but at least the work. The One-S doesn't. I've been seeing this behavior outdoors at other locations as well, around where I work I have had no reception issue's with the 2x, the One-S shows really spotty reception.
I'm on the latest OTA which is 1.78.401.2
What's your take on this, do you have any reception issue's?

I had a T-mobile branded One S (Gradient Blue) and the reception was horrible, so glad I got myself another GS2 (t989)
I'm experiencing same issues of reception on an unbranded EU phone with 1.78. 1.53 was worst!
I tend to have signal but no data, I tend to have signal in the notification bar but no actual signal.
I have many issues which weren't here in my old desire!
MicroSIM was replaced twice with no real help - It's the phone to blame...
Poor reception
I also have same problem. I am in pakistan using Telenor and phone is Tmobile UK unlocked.
It may work to disallow some energy-saving settings(of the ril) in the build.prop, however it brings risk to do so:
You have to know how to tweak the file, and get ready to re-flash the ROM/RUU in case of half-brick caused by bad tweaks.

That sucks! It is a great phone. Reception has been flawless for me. I have a TMOUSA-branded One S.
the worst reception ever...
well I lied a bit - as most of the time I'm getting no reception at all;/
sometimes around 60-70% of the time with no signal (when I click the cell stats in battery meter) and often when picked out of the pocket the phone is showing NO SIGNAL warning for one second...
Unlocked HTC One S, UK version, ceramic black, bought beginning of April
I had this problem from the start, but was hard to prove to get a new phone replacement, as when it does have good reception when signal coverage is great - with 10MBit/s download 3G speed which was amazing compared to my Desire Z (max 4MBit on 3G). The problem is, signal reception fluctuates a lot to a point of loosing it...
Wifi is affected as well, for example after a fresh reboot the Wi-Fi is at full speed, but give it an hour of mobile usage and it is at half of its performance. Wi-Fi isn't that critical (although I do not have signal in my garden where my Desire Z or iPad doesnt have any problem with my home wifi!) but the weak radio is!
I wasn't scared so much as I thought an update will come, and it did, so I have updated radio to 0.16 (1.78 RUU) from 0.15 (1.53 RUU) in a hope things will improve, and they did for 1 day - then I realized it was a placebo effect what I'm seeing.
In network stats I am mostly on -97 to -107 db in signal strength with 0-5 ASU, and when I have -93db I can celebrate! (which is considered pretty weak on my other android phones)
Researching this problem led me to believe it might be a software bug as well, as it varies - when you're doing a phone call, signal strength is simply stronger, you're out of a sudden see more ASUs and are say on -92db. As long as you hang the call, you're at -101 db again, soon after you can loose the signal when you're in placed with weaker coverage (park, too many in London).
Then I have places where I am absolutely unable to make a call, and the other day I do have 2 bars there and I am able to call without a problem.
Then the other day I can try 10 times and no chance - no signal, immediately rejected from a call app, can't even call voicemail.
The top icon notification is 'mad' most of the time - showing full strength from time to time only to fall to 1 bar (or no bar) on 80% of the time.
I would welcome some idea how to prove this thing to a seller to get a replacement, but as I said, if One S sees 20+ more ASUs (city coverage is great), you don't notice this thing and it can work flawlessly.
My conclusion is that HTC One S has only problem when the signal coverage becomes weak and it can't properly get hold of it like other phones do (Samsung Galaxy S Plus, for example, is ten times zillion million better than this - having much stronger signal when covered with pillows closed in a stainless steel box ;-)
Should we start writing the serial numbers here so we can see which batch of HTC One S phones is bad?
P.S. The USA T-Mobile update 1.83 is promising some fix to signal fluctuation - I don't know it this would help european version, even if it would not fluctuate, it would still be weak.
P.P.S. Switching ON the 'best wifi performance' haven't made a single difference for me, neither for radio strength nor in wifi. The only difference was big hit on battery life.
I know exactly what you mean - had it the same!!!
Apparently there is a solution which is not hardware related:
There are network providers that doesn't support the signal fast dormancy as this phone tries to use. As a result, the phone disconnects from the service provider and tries to reconnect which takes several minutes.
In order to solve that until HTC will do it (if at all), you need to root your phone, get into build.prop file and then change the line ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=... to be ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=#.
This is thanks to jh787!
It seems to help me.
I'm in the Netherlands too, with an unbranded device and facing same troubles. Got my device lately with 1.78.401.2 preinstalled.
The reception is compared to my HTC Incredible S really bad.
I becomes irritated too by the FM Tuner recepetion. If you're moving on bccycle, car, train or bus the volume is getting up and down, up and down. And lot of areas I can't listen at all to the radio stations I could with the Incredible S
don't want to root just yet...

Thank you, you probably mean the thread mentioned by jh787 at the bottom here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26923454
- it might fix the issue, the problem is I've tried 2 different mobile providers with same results and today I bought O2 PAYG microSIM to try the best (signal wise) London mobile provider to see if the fast dormancy is the problem. I don't want to root the phone yet as if it won't help the warranty is void. I'll report later.
- there's another tip in that thread

also changing the following line to look as shown solved my no network issues when i was in areas of weak reception

I don't have root yet, but just checked /system/build.prop file using Solid Explorer and I have this value already properly set as others have mentioned (1.78) but the phone still has weaker signal when idle and stronger when having a phone call.
Code:
# For HSDPA low throughput
ro.ril.disable.power.collapse = 1
As I understand this should be '#' instead of 1
Code:
ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=1
comparing to jh787 build.prop I am no wiser, as he's still at older 1.53 OTA and seems like T-Mobile branded phone.
I'm already on 1.78, checked his 2 comments and also found that the power collapse is 1 already. The fast dormancy I did change to # and believe me, after 6 weeks of screaming on the phone to be a phone, other than a great looking mobile computer, I'm using it flawlessly as a phone too!
Root is reversible via RUU and for me needed until HTC will provide an update which will either disable the fast dormancy or enable a switch to control it...
Ive had 2 One S's since launch and both of them have had appalling signal issues, Im on Vodafone UK and believe its their network at fault.
But i see here a range of providers and still crappy signal. I was thinking of cancelling my Vodafone contract and taking out a new one with another provider, As i really like HTC..... But after reading this thread im having doubts !
Im beginning to think the safe option would be to leave HTC and Go back to Samsung, And try to get the S3 !

Are you rooted already?
If so, try the build.prop change I mentioned before...
Im rooted, Ive ran every custom ROM, Ive flashed every radio, Ive done everything possible, Nothing works.
Ill give the build.prop edit a try later. not expecting much tho.

Intermittent connectivity issues

Every so often my M8 will basically become disconnected from the network. This NORMALLY appears when I'm in a low coverage zone, and it's as if my phone just doesn't want to reconnect when I get back into a higher coverage area.
For instance at my gym, I frequently get a weak signal, but it's usually 4G. Sometimes it'll drop to 3G, and then sometimes when I get back into an area of the gym that has 4G coverage my phone will say it's still on 3G. However, there's actually no connectivity at all, and I need to either reboot or toggle airplane mode to get a connection again.
Sometimes (at least 2-3 times in the last week) it happened while, at least to the best of my knowledge, I was in a 4G area (though with weak coverage) the entire time. Again I fixed it each time by toggling airplane.
Has anyone else seen an issue like this? It's frustrating as hell. And more importantly has anyone heard of a fix for this?

Yep, actually I had a thread about this a while back; I tried just about everything (other ROMs, new sim cards, factory resets, the whole shebang) and my only solution so far (if you intend on keeping your current phone) is to completely unroot my phone, along with removing all root-related applications (namely Xposed). It still happens from time to time, but a lot less frequently then when rooted and running Xposed modules. I have a new phone coming in today from Verizon, so hopefully that unit will not have any of these issues... I still am not entirely sure what causes it, though it is definitely exacerbated by Xposed. Hopefully some of this helps? If you have any further questions feel free to ask, either through PM or this here thread.

I have a new phone now, and so far I haven't experienced any data connectivity issues. This morning I did notice that my SMS were not sending properly, but that issue has since faded away, so hopefully it was Verizon network based... Anyways, I will try reinstalling Xposed and a couple modules later today (likely Snapshare and the Sense 6 Toolbox) and will report back sometime tomorrow or the next on how it goes. Fingers crossed...

Lol, so after installing Xposed, I suddenly started having issues maintaining a solid 4G connection; 3G works fine, just whenever I do manage to connect to 4G I am unable to use any data (says I am connected to the mobile network, but I do not get any upload or download data movement). Even after removing Xposed and all associated modules, I am still experiencing this problems. I am going in today/Monday to get a new SIM card (hopefully this is what is causing my issues) but goddamn I just cannot seem to catch a break in terms of my phones' data connection. If the above doesn't work I may have to send for another phone, though after having now received three replacements this entire process is getting a little irksome... I really do love this phone, but it seems as if it is my M8 is rejecting my love from every angle.
UPDATE: The new SIM didn't do anything, I still am having 4G issues, so another phone it is...

I had the same problem with my new M8 when travelling from/to areas with low or no data coverage back to areas where I knew there was a LTE signal. Only toggling Airplane Mode would make the data reconnect. That problem was solved for me with a new sim card.
I also had very bad data connectivity at home in a major southern California city (best was -105 dBm) whereas I got up to -83 dBm in some rural town in Arizona.
Read trook's posts #34 and up here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53838257
Some of these problems may be connected to the new data service VZW is rolling out.
I would wait a few weeks before ditiching this phone. 'Cause it rocks!!!

it has nothing to do with the AWS rollout - i have a Verizon Galaxy S5 sitting right next to my M8 ---- guess what - consistent data speeds on the s5 (15 mbs down)......on the m8 (3-4mbs down) - and the data flucutates and in the signal meter , I'm getting about -6db less on the M8 than the s5.
trust me, i so desperately want to keep this phone, b/c quite frankly, i hate the amoled screen on the s5, but alas, i cant keep a phone that doesn't work well

yes - sorry bro - i'm quite disappointed by what i am seeing with my own two eyes as well as all the others across the US and the rest of the world who are experiencing the SAME symptoms. so this is not a verizon network issue --
me thinks its a faulty radio which is causing bad handoffs between 3g and 4g (LTE). once the phone drops down to 3g, it never regains 4g signal for some reason. also, there is the issue of the constant signal fluctuations even when the phone is on LTE...so who knows. maybe combo of bad radio and poor quality antenna module.
i'm not a phone engineer but i have enough common sense and knowledge about phones to know a lemon when i see one......so, yup, i'm keeping the s5 and return the m8 tomorrow under the 14 day guarantee from verizon. shame....

To tell the truth I have been reading about the same issue on the general M8 forum - probably just didn't want to make the connection.... So thanks for opening my eyes.
I'm hoping for bad radio software that may get fixed with some future update (although my 6th sense tells me it's the bad antenna module....)
Too late for me for a clean exchange. Gonna have to read the Squaretrade fine print.....
