Just curious, but...
It seems like, as of late, someone starts to build a new ROM, then stops updating after 2 or 3 rc's, leaving the ROM unfinished. I understand the ROMs are created in someone's spare time, but why start a ROM if you never intend to finish it? Why not finish it before you start something else, or just delete the development thread so we're not sitting here waiting for the next release that never seems to come? No offense to anyone, just curious.
Roms are never really finished you can always add new functions
, themes etc.

Quit flashing ROMs since you'll never have a 100% guarantee that someone will finish a ROM. Go back to stock GB which has a bad modem and reboot problems. Oh wait, Samsung didn't exactly give you a good ROM either.
Why is it that if the ROM never gets a final version its assumed its unfinished? The unfinished ROMs, ics mutt, cm7, miui, are all still works in progress (well maybe not miui, not sure of it's future). Seems to me everything else is fully functional and doesn't require anything else.
All the the most recent ones, unnamed, vb, icbinb, scom, these are problem free. Just find the right kernel and modem for your phone and they qualify as finished.

Im still updating mine but this post makes me not want to
And like the post above me said the title doesnt have to be final for it to be final. Also, the dev can choose to start a new rom bc people want the new mod they are bringing to it along with a new theme and tweaks.
So thank you devs for the many roms you guys release.
if you ain't first you're last
I think you should aim to non beta ROMs. At least this way you know you get a fully functional ROM. Regarding Final version, forget about it. Won't happen, won't be announced.

most developers acknowledge that there are going to be some dev cycles involved in their releases. I guess some non-developers either don't realize that or haven't picked up on that yet.
Nothing's perfect so take it as it is and don't complain, and if it has a "final" tag on it, it just means the developer is done working on it. Beggars can't be choosers, and choosers can download the source and modify it themselves (or fsck it up even more ).
Quit your belly aching dude, instead, a little appreciation would be a welcome change. We have so many different options to choose from. And every time my noob ass bricks my phone these guys have a post on how to fix it. Fb is right, go back to stock if it bothers you so much, but I'll stick with my 2 day battery life.
side note: on dictionary. com the word of the day is ungrateful turdlicker.

I think that people get desperate when devs release and early version of a rom instead of an almost final. I think it would be best to release the "final" version to public and since there are many devs with the phone and so many wise users that know how to test and report correctly. In my humble opinion, a dev should pick a group of testers, silently and then release a "final" that probably would have 0 to very few changes. That way devs don't get pissed when people ask same questions and bring up many problems.
I have no problem testing or trying alpha, beta, charlie, delta......... zeta releases, but my concern is with devs releasing lots of projects and getting mad by people asking how to this and how to that. Yeah, read... blablabla yadda yadda... I know no one is in the obligation of doing nothing, either flash or develop or answer questions or help. Thing is that this is a community very diverse and noobs are going to be noobs, haters gonna hate and passive people will be passive...
No need to flame the OP. I think it's a good question, tho.
considering i no longer have a sgs4g it would be hard to update it. The rom itself is fine.. Don't see an issue. If you don't like the theme change it. If you don't like the rom learn how to make your own.

When a rom is release an OP comes with it where bugs known are said from the get go. As for bug reported devs are fine with them as long as logs are attached and they are real bugs and not just "I want a better theme" or "how do I install this rom".
As for flaming, it's actually a rule that we can't do this to one another on xda.

Now that the Vibrant has an ICS ROM currently under development, and since I have read Vibrant ROM's can be ported to the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, does anyone know how feasible this would be? From my understanding the storage is a bit different (partitioning?) but the hardware in these devices appears very similar.
I've read the post about porting Vibrant ROM's but I've also read a few people haven't had much luck. Since I am on leave this coming week I've decided I'll tinker a bit with the concept, I'm also curious if anyone else has.
No doubt, I wish I had the capability to use the source to begin work on a ROM compiled directly towards the SGS4G, but alas I do not
Any ideas or inputs would be greatly appreciated. I am disappointed in the lack of development for this phone, but I do understand why.
Probably won't happen. We don't even have an aosp kernel compiled that I am aware of. Someone was trying to get the KJ6 kernel edited like drhonks and even that didn't turn out.
The couple devs we have left around here are just doing little tweaks and theaming the stock rom lately.... no real new developing afaik.
Kinda sucks... but this phone is pretty much dead in the water.

Yea we are struggling to get a dated cm7 so what makes you think we can get something newer than that.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
@camalus But you do have the kernel released for GB by Samsung as of recent, which from what I've seen others are doing to get ICS working on their devices.
@daxecutioner24 If you can't find it, make it.
@EjLIFE Not going krazy over cm7,ill be fine withput it
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
People, cm kernel is made, just being tweaked, according to krylon. Lets wait patiently, maybe we'll get cm7, then someone will have enough courage to build ICS
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
I'd agree, CM7 would be great to have on this device. And hopefully their development of CM7 could make moving from CM7 to CM9 much more easier. I just know this device should run ICS just as well as the Vibrant, and I've seen people port Vibrant ROM's to the SGS4G so I was curious if one thought their was a faster possibility.
If you are so needy for new ROMs and development then you should do it yourself or be patiently waiting for WIPs the "few" but great developers have announced and not flooding the forum with wine and cheese... Just my two cents... Im just saying...

Actually, my inquiry was related to the idea of porting the ROM from the Vibrant to this device myself, and asking if anyone with knowledge of doing so if it was even a worthy attempt.
I'm also going to say I have noticed the Samsung side of XDA seems to have only a few developers with knowledge and insight and TONs of people waiting for a chance to flame others. Here is a hint: your post is entirely unconstructive. It isn't your job to protect the developers and when you hop into a thread to shoot your two cents of flame it only details. You are also potentially pushing away the progress others might make by being a douche.
Thanks.

Yes. I get all your comments about how no good is to flame. I dont really care. Just to begin with. I only posted that because people only do is ask and complain about the "few" devs that only do theme-ing and/or their little so called development. Thats flameful and disrespectful itself because if you want some ICS, you can enjoy Ravers Octane. It may not be ICS but you get my idea. This is an old phone, everybody knows that and we just got GB source a few weeks ago. Its not going to be rainning ROMs instantly. Also, GB is older than the phone itself. The Vibrant has been around for maybe 2 years and many people jumped in the first round of Galaxys, probably skipped this Vibrant Plus so then we dont get many users or devs, therefore why so little development. ICS just got out and is available on like three phones whereas the GB have been around and phones now even come with it while we had to start from froyo...
Bah this is pointless debating. Im just sick of these threads talking sh!+ about development here. Everyone should be grateful of what we have. Again, you want something made then do it yourself. Like it or not, its simple like that.
I wont be visiting this so much contributive thread with my so much non contributive posts. And dont mind critizing my typos, English is not my first language.
All of you should call down.

Same thing, since our phone is so different, wouldn't we need an ICS bootloader and or kernel source for ICS for it to work. CM7 may be here in a month, but ICS won't be here until a year after CM9 comes out, if at all. So, just wait for your 2 year tmo contract to end and switch to sprint and get the galaxy nexus 2(possibly 2012).

As you all know, nearly two weeks ago the long awaited source code for the Android Gingerbread software was released. This had been a joyous occasion for many of us who had been patiently awaiting its release in hopes that it would lead to working versions of Cyanogenmod and MIUI on our phones, as well as several kernel modifications that were not previously possible. The first few hours of speculation turned into days, which turned into weeks, with the promises of development yet to be fulfilled. As it turns out the fears of some of you had come true, that the few developers that were left lost interest in the Galaxy S 4G for other projects.
While people like Raver have actively stuck with us, there has been a dead silence by those who were previously the most visible on this forum. Whitehawkx who has left us for the Galaxy S2, Dsexton who had left for lack of a separate computer, and Dr Honk who God knows where he is. Krylon ive seen mention working on a kernel once but with little detail. These were some of the best we had and we need to make it overwhelmingly obvious to them that they are wanted and needed here. So I propose that we take the time to let them know that the source code they've wanted and needed is now available and ready to be worked. Youre welcome to write up your own words for a message, though heres something I threw together along with the public contact info for the devs.
Feel free to reach out to any other devs who have not been listed here or from other forums.
Update: Dev's emails were removed by site mods. If you would like to email the people below, you can readily find their email in their user profiles and in their Donate To Me links.

“Hello (dev screen name),
This is (your screen name) from the Galaxy S 4G forums on XDA. If you haven’t heard, the source code for Gingerbread we have been eagerly awaiting was finally released a few weeks ago for our phones. With the source finally released, the limitations our devs had faced before in developing for the SGS4G are now gone, and the path is clear for development of CM7 and MIUI for our phones. I have noticed you have not been around the SGS4G forums recently, but I along with all the other forum members have been hopefully awaiting your return to developing for our phones with the expertise you have shown in all of your many other projects for the SGS4G. As well, the lack of devs on the forum have left many of the still poplar ROM’s unmaintained and not updated to the latest official release. Please come back to developing for the SGS4G for all of us who have spent hours testing and using your ROM’s and show us what your talents can turn these phones into.
Thank you”
I think this is good intended but i fear it wont change anything.
Dont forget soma and airfluip who has been developing for our phones recently.
Krylin said in twitter that he will begin working in a ROM based on GB for our phones. Although he said he will start it today if he doesnt its still good news. I know he can make kernels and roms. Also raver is working. Dsexton said he will get a computer soon and that he needed break. White.... I dont know he droppwd when ki3 leaked. But oh well, lets enjoy or wait.
I've been lurking these forums since this phone came out, with the occasional post here and there.
I have seen people waiting months just for root.
I remember kb5 enhanced was our only ROM for times without end, just to have that developer throw a fit at Mr.Clown for mistakingly closing his thread and leave us hanging.
I remember following Krylon on twitter for what seemed like an eternity, until we finally had cwm on our phones.
Then came the good times.
New roms coming out just about every week, themes, mods, and all the goodies we see on our forums today.
New developers popping up, the formation of teams like aerodonk and acid.
Now we are back in one of these silent periods.
It seems like all development stopped.
But one thing I've learned from these forums is that patience is a virtue.
We go from bad times to good times, to bad again, and so on.
I'm sure there is progress being done right now.
No matter how little, our how long it's taking, it will come.
And a new life cycle will start for our phones.
We just gotta hang tight, get through this metamorphose, and then our phone will come out, greater then before!
Saw on krylons twitter something about doing another rom based off of the gb update so that looks promising.
Also its not just the sgs4g. I own a sensation as well and things have really slowed there too.
I understand everybodys frustration with the length of time that it is taking for us to get new roms. But you have to understand these guys do this in their spare time. And yes, it is true that because of Samsung and t mobile taking forever to release a GB for us made some of the devs loose interest and move to other devices; however, we still have Raver and Krylon on or side, Dsexton will be coming back soon, and hopefully we can get Drhonk and Whitehawx back if not for developing but for at least guidance, tips, and support. I for one have started trying to learn how to do some of this but without a Linux machine it is a bit difficult. But there is no reason some of you can't chip in and try to learn this stuff too. Not to override the few true devs we have, but to assist them.

Hi Thomas
Please share your knowledge source. I am willing to learn as well, though to tell you the truth, moding and theming couldn't care me less, I'm always into performance and reliability, as well as good RTL and foreign language support (like in CM and MIUI).
Other than that, I'm always on stock theme.
I'm no dev, but I'm considering to become one in the future.

My biggest resources are picking the brain of RaverX3X and google. You can do most everything on a windows machine except mod kernels and make an Odin .tar (for those you need Linux or the ability to run Linux in a vm environment). There are quite a few tutorials out there. You just have to download the right tools to do it, have lots of spare time to devote to it and the gonads to test it.lol... Pm me later with specific questions and I can give you direct links to tutorials that might help you as well.

I remember when i had the galaxy vibrant early this year i was so into the device cause they were a lots of roms here to choose from and thats one of my concerns now for this device now. If you go to the vibrant section there are a lots of 2.2 biulds 2.2.1, 2.3 ,2.3.3 etc etc etc. And they are all different. Including from stock to MIUI and htc Sence. As well as gingerbread and honeycomb. So my question is why the devs didnt work on some builds like those for this device. From my end i really dont care about what number of the OS is as long the build is stable, fast, bloatware free, custom ringtones, wallpapers, and other great thing that i did manage to see on my old vibrant that i no longer own :/
Yesterday my older sister got the galaxy s 2 for tmobile and its so awsome. I have envy in me now jajajajaja xD

This is mere conjecture on my part, but I would assume that you can modify the kernel in Windows as long as your text editor supports Unix-type line endings (Notepad++ works nicely), and then compile it using presumably gcc in Cygwin. Again, this is merely speculation on my part, having only built a Linux kernel on Linux, for my desktop.
As of right now, I am modifying and reviewing the code in the KVM folders in both sources. I just need to know as to who is doing what. It would be a LOT easier for anyone who is trying to port the CM GB Kernel to our phone. So far it is taking me all night long just to do ONE file. If I can get help with this. It will mean that we will get CM7 running on our phone soon.

If you searched around, or read under "Plans" in the OP of my kernel thread (serious everyone... it's been there for quite some time!) or search through Q&A or General, you will find me talking about the progress of where I'm at whenever someone brings up another cm7 or kernel thread.
I will also plan on updating the OP in that thread or at least point to a new thread... when something happens.
Something is being worked on, but unless you are experienced with android/kernel system development, sit back and relax. There are a few gb roms to play with, fb's debloat tool, if you hate wifi/4g reception or want bln/voodoo sound, go check out froyo roms (don't forget about bootloaders ).
Relax, if you want something good, you have to wait.
Replied to the wrong thread.
Nice i cant wait for cm7 port. Loved it with my g2 and cm6 with my old g1

I know you are excited. You get me on chat and say hi, then log out. You ask me all the time for status... while I'm at work, doing work stuff. I can't touch this stuff while I'm at work, cause I don't get paid to do this, I get paid to do my work.
And no. I'm not "really close". There is plenty of stuff for me to figure out, and the ammount of time i'd spend telling you what is going on, I could be working on it.
I spend LESS THEN 20% of my time on this stuff, and nothing has changed from last night. There is nothing 'newer' then that.
Status: I'm not done. Nothing is ready yet. Check the forum for updates. I have no ETAs. Relax, go watch tv, hiking, learn to surf... do something. Gimme time. (btw, this is why I don't like adding people to my gtalk.)
Geez, sorry. Didn't have to flame me.

Go to google and learn how to edit and compile the Linux kernel. I don't know anything about editing kernels either and that's where I'd start. Before you ask why you need to learn about Linux you should know that Android is based on Linux.

Its comments like that ... that discourage people from helping. Whether you have a problem with air or not you should still keep your comments to yourself. I have not ever even seen you attempt to help someone with anything yet you believe you have the right to bash others for trying.
P.S. When you just say "no offense" and then say something offensive, it does not make it ok.

Jiggly... if I may,
While I agree on the double standard on 'no offense', the point being made is that there is a link at the bottom of my signature that says 'github'.
If you venture there, you find repositories. The ones with the readme files are the 'useful' files.
If you want me to spoon feed the young, I will need more arms.
I wish this community would embrace the saying 'RTM'. It's all there. Black and White (depending on your system settings ). There is more then one forum on xda, and other phone forums based on the galaxy s phone also provide tips on building cyanogen. And the commands are only slightly different.
At this point with my source, a build if it builds would not work at all. I'm experimenting around with a few local repo's that are not on github. And when that stuff works, I totally plan on putting up a [REF] thread here in general on building sgs4g cm7 from source.
I don't plan on doing this any sooner then it working, because you don't need to be bricking your phone... right!?!
If you are an android developer and know how to build cm7, you would have found the manifest and never looked back. forked repositories, sent me pull requests to merge your code into my tree... so we can work together.
On one hand, I don't want to baby sit 'wanna be' developers that have no clue what they are getting into, because I don't want to play Q&A with them. It eats up all my time on making this stuff work in the first place.
On the other hand, there are real developers out there who know what to do, but might need some help. I do not want to push these people away, because they will just go and all I have to do is merge.
I cannot agree with you more BH. I appreciate all the work that you do for our phones community and my post was not a comment towards you at all.
I cannot even imagine trying to develop and help people with their questions as much as possible along the way. I know that every minute you are answering questions that is one less minute you are using your "CM7 time" to develop.
My post was simply stating that if you do absolutely NOTHING for the community (lowsnamebrand)... don't bash others for trying. I know people that were asking noob questions 6 to 8 months ago that are developing roms for other devices.
I do apologize if I offended you as that was not my intention whatsoever. I just hate seeing people shoot others down and bash others for trying. Whether you love airfluip or hate him, you cannot deny that he does try to help as much as possible. He asks what he can do to help (which may annoy people but i feel he really wants to help), answers peoples questions, developed AOSP rom and deals with a lot of the same "hand holding" helping people to flash roms.
Again, I am sorry if I offended you but my comment was not in reference to you or your work at all. Thanks for all that you do BH.

Haha, nah man. Airfluip1 is young and full of "go'get'em". I was like that once. A couple people gave me **** and I started reading everything I could get my hands on because I never wanted to be 'that guy'. He just needs the thwack over the head to go read more. (google, it works!)
Airfluip1 thinks that I am making daily progress on this. I'm not.
The only reason I said anything in the first place is because he keeps pumping up other user's saying "Oh, bh is gonna get cm7 out soon!" which really isn't being honest to other users. If I can get SKILLED help, then we can get cm7 out sooner. But I don't want to teach people stuff that they could find/learn on google. If you can't figure that out, don't ask to help me. It just annoys me.
My response to your post was supposed to have some <snarky> and <sarcasm> tags, I musta failed
I hope you laughed at the "if I may,"

Ok guys So you own a SGS4g now what? Well lets just air out a few thing that get Devs absolutely fired up.
1) Requesting ROM features.
2) Ordering them to do something.
3) Repeatedly asking the same question.
4) Demanding
5) Complaining
6) Asking for a ETA on Alphas
7) Harassing
8) Threatening
I could keep going on about what makes them mad but there is already a thread about that. This thread is to Distract Noobs away from bugging the Devs by discussing ROMS with each other and answering each others questions that would normally bug Devs. Yes Devs are welcome here, but mainly this is thread to prevent Noobs from pestering the Devs about things that can be answered by other Noobs (or Google). Noobs feel free to ask, discuss, and converse away. Just remember flaming is bad so just don't do it. If you honestly don't understand the difference between positive criticism and negative then just don't criticise anyone. Better yet lets keep negativity to ourselves.
Lets get a few Questions out of the way.
Q) Does the SGS4g have an ICS ROM yet.
A) Yes There are several
Q) Who's fault is it if I brick my SGS4g?
A) YOURS, Obviously you failed to follow instructions.
Q) What's the difference between a soft brick and a hard brick.
A) One is ceramic and one is foam!! JK
DEFINITIONS you need know as a NOOB
NOOB A person only intent in serving on their own self interest.
Newb Person new to XDA
Member A person who has joined XDA
Dev Developer
RD recognised developer
MOD Modification/Moderator
ROM Read only memory
WIP work in progress
CWM Clock work mod recovery
Lol awesome and no offense but 8 threatening is worse than 1 lol just saying I'd rather have people request features than threatening me haha

on OTA ICS well google, all the electronics companies, and the air carriers made an 18 month agreement to upgrade all devices made in the last 18 months that can be upgraded. As to whether or not they abide by the agreement is up in the air. We have to wait until they are ready to update our phone, aka when S2 sales fall, before we see an upgrade. Its all about keeping us from buying a competitors phone.

Motorola got around that by stating certain devices will not operate any better on ICS than GB. There is many ways to get around that agreement. If there wasnt none of them would have agreed to it.

True but it's all about sales, if they feel that upgrading your phone will prevent you from buying the competitor, especially if the competitor releases a phone that is cheaper then their current market topper. It only makes perfect business sense if you can't sell them something new, prevent them from buying from someone else. If you have noticed that's why updates tend to always be released/leaked around the same time as a new competitors phone is released.
I would like to apologize to Lumin and fb I made and guide that was based off incorrect info, they stuck by there guns in correcting me. I was wrong as happens sometimes. The guide should be removed soon.

For those now on ICS
I have found an awesome new version of the XDA app, no I didn't develop it I found it.
It is an ICS themed blue XDA Developers APK Developed by Whiskey103.
It is the free version but if you are OCD and love colors to match then here you go.

So, I have seen a few posts as of late with some frustrations of there being very little going on here in the Atrix2 forum.
I want to give those a little background right now, and I am not speaking for every dev in here either, and I am hoping that they will all jump in here and give their 2 cents as well, so that we can let everyone know what is up.
As I am sure many have seen all the hoopla over the ICS leaks. This is one reason why things are a little slow right now. I am pretty sure that I don't want to keep working on things that are for 2.3.6 when 4.04 is about to be released in next several weeks. I am just guessing, but I am sure that the other devs may be feeling some of the same thing right now.
I KNOW that once we get ICS in hand, that there will be so much going on in here, it will be hard to keep up.
I am already working on some new hacks for ICS, and working on the CM9 FULL fresh compile, so that once we have the ICS kernel on our phones this should in all theoretical ways, work. I am still working on the bootloader as well, there are 3 different things that I am currently trying out, to break into it.
I also know that I am really hitting the Moto servers pretty hard with my own scripts to try and find an AT&T ICS leak for us, to get a head start on some of these FUN things for us, but until we get at least that, there is not too much we can do.
Ok devs, jump in, I hope I am not the only one in here that is thinking like this... I just thought this might be a nice way to let everyone know what is up and what we might be attempting at the moment, just before the you know what hits the fan.
Very well spoken as usual Jim! I feel the same way, once ICS comes out my work on GB is done!
I've been playing with AOKP every chance I get trying to get a working port going, once we get these bugs out for SCV6 and I get v1.3 out for Lithium, AOKP will be my main focus until we get ICS. I just don't see a point in continuing work on something that will be obsolete very shortly.
Development isn't dead by along ways, we are just at a stand still
If you're not checking cheesecake, you're not contributing all you can !!

Agreed. I will speak for myself when saying that Knowing ics is only weeks away,i myself am not going to kill myself in the kitchen with new updates or roms that are going to be old news and outdated ,and virtually useless to you guys in a matter of weeks.
Everything is quiet for me because i myself consider this my "break time" before the countless hours i am about to spend whipping up new roms and tweaks and just tearing the ics rom apart and exploring the new posibilities i will have with it.
Think of this as the calm before the storm.
Or do what i did, once i got this phone i was a little unsatisfied seeing only one rom at the time (lfaber06's scv4). So instead of complaining and/or waiting i took it upon myself to learn how to do what devs do.
You can Either be apart of the problem, or be a part of the solution.
My two cents..

That's where I am. Though, it may be more of a learning curve for me (as likely it has for others) to get a handle on things with the limitations imposed via AT&T / Moto, I am eager and have been using my time to soak up as much info and knowledge from outside sources, as well as guys here on the forum to be -eventually- helpful.
I've said it before, and have no qualms seeming like I'm sounding like a broken record, but I envy the dev's, hackers, et al that have AND continue to inspire me to get to the place I'd like to be...
I look forward to what ICS will give you guys to work with, and what it will do for the A2 community here. You guys are all my heros! lol

I basically do not have the time because of work and trying to raise my kids. I do understand there is a lot of hard work that goes into being a dev. I myself do not expect anything from you guys and I'm sure some people agree. The way i see it, if you all put out something for all of us, that is great but in no way, shape or form are you expected to. If things here are slow, so be it. If people want to cry about how slow it is here then they ought to start learning how to do things themselves. Anyway, we all appreciate the work that the devs do here and I don't want you to feel like you are under pressure to put anything out because your not. Keep up the good work.

That is not why I did this. I just wanted to give all of the devs a chance to give everyone a little update as to what is currently going on. I felt that as we are awaiting the ICS leak or official release, that we could just take a few min. to give everyone a little update in good faith. The fact that others have noticed a little slow down seemed the perfect chance to do something like this.
As you said, this write up really was not for the ones with issues, but more for the faithful that are here all the time and giving their support if nothing else. I really don't care if people want to whine and such. I am here to do what I feel is more fun for me, and my "curiosity" than anything else, and if that can help someone else, or give us some great finds, then awesome.
