Swapping back and forth between OSes. - General Questions and Answers

First of all, I'm a die hard WP7 user through and through. Social interaction, stability, and quick gaming, as well as a good ecosystem of interconnected services are what I'm after in a phone, and so it's the ideal option for me. That said, I try to be as fair as possible in my judgment of other devices. I recently picked up a Nokia N9 and an Xperia play as alternate phones to my Lumia 800 (which has since been upgraded to the Lumia 900) for comparison purposes. The first thing I tested on these two devices, since it's the one thing I miss on WP7, is emulation. Honestly, despite the perfect controls on the xperia, I kept going back to the more "pure" Linux experience of meego for emulation. This was due primarily to the app emumaster which has all your basic emulators cooked into one app with great developer support and outstanding framework. The xperia's controls are awesome, but the low quality of the ps1 emulators I could find left a lot to be desired. The feature that Android really stole the show with, was the market. I left android October of 2010 for the most part aside from picking up random great deals on Craigslist. I most recently tried the Gnex, and it seemed to have a lot of the issues that put me on the prowl in the first place still, so I was not smitten. However, the progression of the app market is phenomenal, a far cry from the doldrum mess that I was forced to search through in my time with android. The new Google Play point is great and feels a lot less like a beta test than it did before. While I'll always prefer WP7's dynamic UI, I much preferred Meego's to android's. There are no "official" widgets yet, but even without, the three home screens have all the info you need and the lock screen is great. It offers a, "sleeping clock" feature where even when the phone is asleep, the clock is still displayed, as well as your notifications. After double tapping on that, you have more specific notifications over a background pic of your choosing, you can swipe on any of these to open the app direct, or just swipe the whole homescreen off which leads to the homescreens, one has all your apps complete with folders. The next, shows all the apps you have currently running. True multi-tasking an astonishing 19 apps and no real hiccups. Amazing. Then, there's your notifications tab, it keeps your notifications as well as a list of your social network mews feed on hand. Everything just feels easy and intuitive. Android, sadly, still felt pretty much the same, I guess if it's not broke, don't fix it, but there's better UI options. Overall, the xperia Play got the least play, not because it's a bad device, but it's just not what I need. The N9 is great, but suffers some of the same issues android does. It is, however, a good meeting point between android and WP7 and was abandoned far too early. Neither pulled me from WP7, but unfortunately, I now try to double-tap my 900 to unlock it.

Not sure what the point of this post is.
E; oh, text wall. It looks like copying it misconstrued my formatting.

That should've stuck with Meego. That would've been a real 4th OS.
Nokia can't shine with Wp7.

The Lumia 900 seems to be doing quite well for itself, replacing the iPhone as ATT's hero device. I can't wait to see what the 610 does in India.

I read somewhere that at&t associates doin a disservice for customers. It seems iPhone is still the hero device, salespeople still pushing the iPhone and not giving the lumia900 a chance.

They sell what they know, unfortunately most att reps know little about phones.

Yeeesssss, loft in its beauty. Feel it in your pocket.MMMMMMMMM. So good.
I bought mine on launch, and I still love. My only regret the is potential loss of tmobile, but the FCC seems to be leaning against that.
I really like it a lot. I think it's still the phone I'd choose today if I was in the market again; I've really appreciated the stock experience, especially post-2.3.3 patch, which fixed pretty much all my gripes with it.
I love it, but the only thing that I can think of to change is making the speaker audible when laid on it's back. I had a few missed calls because of this.
I love it. Started off a little bit slow, but things are starting to catch up... slowly.
I never get sick of the phone's looks. And getting the Case-Mate Pop Case made me even love it more.
Edit: Slow as in development.
I love it to death. The only way I would think of giving it up is if the deal goes through. Having a 3g phone with no 3g is lame.

Same with this guy.
my brother has one. ihave iphone 4. last week i bought one. used but almost brand new. not a single cratch with no visible gtid pattern on the matrix pentile screen. it was stunning.
i figured what the hell, i will try it for few days. if i like it, i will keep it and sell my iphone 4. if not i will return it to the store " store owner is my close friend "
so i played with it. i think its awesome. but i gave it to my brother since it was in better shape than my brothers and he sold his phone.
i use skype video calls almost daily. and i play alot of games. i figured i can live without the skype but it was a no go.
its funny how a small things can screw up big things.
all in all i think its one of the best phones in the market. and i recommend this phone over any andriod phone available right now.
unless optimus 2x will have a cracked bootloader, then i dont think any phone coming soon will top the nexus .
right now i am waiting for the xperia play. for the same reason, i play games alo :/
Interesting responses. I for one, do love mine. I don't think I could ask for more except 3g.

I don't see any reason not to like the Nexus S currently...the only drawback is lack of dual core and 4G. But no biggie to me...I can live with 3G speeds and this phone is super fast with custom rom's, kernels even without dual core.

Then you'll complain about Samsung's delay on Android X.X. Just stay on the Nexus line and wait for the 3rd Nexus Phone.
Got mine as soon as Bestbuy opened on launch day, rooted it later that day as soon as Koush posted directions. Still love the phone and wouldn't trade it for any other phone available now or that has been announced/rumored.

Android/Windows phone recommendation for gaming

The contract for my HTC Desire is about to run out and I'm looking for a new phone but am really confused about which I should get. I primarily use my phone for gaming and the only thing that annoys me about my current phone is the lack of storage space for apps (even when I'm using Cyanogen).
I really like Android but I'm also quite interested in Windows phones because of the XBL integration. I'm just a bit concerned about the lack of games/apps on Windows phones at the minute. Though I suppose that will improve. When I got my Desire a couple of years ago the Android market was pretty sparse too.
I've been looking at the Galaxy S2 as a couple of people at work have got it but it looks enormous which puts me off. I think I'd quite like something around the same size as my Desire but if the S2 is really that much better for gaming I wouldn't mind going for that anyway. I imagine I'd get used to the size. I've also thought about the LG Optimus phones. Maybe the 2X?
Any thoughts?

Depending on your carrier, I'd suggest going with a Windows Phone 7 model, the Samsung Focus, to be specific. My opinion is WP7 has better games than Android. It may not have as many, but what it has is certainly excellent. But it is still growing too. So the number of games and apps with improve over time. It also has superior apps compared to Android, with the exception being the XDA app. The Android version is superior to the WP7 version. There's a lot to love about WP7. Mainly it has superior integration of social features, messaging and communications. It is by far more convenient than Android and much more reliable. It is smoother, cleaner. faster. It doesn't require as much power to run than Android does for being low-resource hungry.
One superb feature of WP7 hardware is the GSM versions are world phones. If you have a carrier branded WP7 phone sim-unlocked, you can use it on any GSM network, 3G data as well as regular cell service. But there are unlocked versions available at reasonable prices. The Focus is available online for as little as $150 brand new. Best Buy online has them for $250.
But if you don't mind waiting a few weeks, you will be able to choose from the second generation of WP7 phones soon to be released. The Samsung Focus S will be basically the same as an SGS2 but loaded with WP7 and better specs. It's the one I'm eagerly awaiting. It will have the glorious SAMOLED+ tech in a 4.3" size.
If it is primarily gaming then I suggest an iPhone 4s.
Check on each of the OS's app stores for what games they have.
Then just go for the phone which has the most games you want.
Simple.

Factoring in the OP's wish for a smaller screen and i'd agree. The only Android i could suggest with a smallish screen is the Nexus S. These can be had at good prices now.

I do like the look of the Xperia Play, actually. But part of me wonders if I'd be shooting myself in the foot getting that instead of one of the more powerful Androids when I'll be tied into a contract for 18-24 months.
I'm not fussed about getting an iPhone. My wife has one and I've got an iPad which I use for playing iOS games.
I do find the Windows phones intriguing but I'm scared about committing to a platform I'm not sure is going to take off properly. Android seems to be on the up and up at the minute and I just can't see Windows phones catching up. But I have to admit, I am tempted...
To be honest, Android has most of the games the iOS has, and some more, but not as much as the iOS. So if you have the iOS, it makes no sense to me for getting android, if you already have a platform with more and the same.
So why not try WP7 then?

If you dont wan't an iPhone. Get an Android phone, check out maybe a SGSII? or Nexus S?

It looks so much like Android.
I'm confused. This may sound like a separate topic but, since Android is open source, does it mean that I can copy it over and change it around and call it MyMobileOS and sell it for money?
Is what XiaoMi phone is doing legal? They just take Google's code and change it around and massively put it on their own phones and sell for money?

HTC screens are garbage. I personally think that if Samsung was to go ahead and make this move without continuing to release any Android phones then that would be a negative decision on their part financially.

U would leave android because sammy did?
I seriously doubt the SGSII will have anything but android on it but I certainly don't doubt them making a phone with another OS. look at how many android phones sammy makes. you think they will stop all that?
Tizen is also open source - so you should not pay any money to have it. And looking into the source code - all of the drivers are under Apache License with Samsung as owner. We will probably see Samsung running Tizen soon. Not to mention that Intel is supporting the project hoping that they may enforce x86 instead of ARM processors arch (the same way they are forcing Thunderbird instead of USB). Android got one major flaw - that's the java virtual machine or I should say Oracle.
Looks like a Touch Wiz OS. Low end devices most likely, similar to Bada.

Oh c'mon with the exaggeration.. they're a far cry from 'garbage'!
Samsung screens are nice but the colours (from what I have seen personally) are over saturated in comparison to others such as HTC, which have more natural colours, something a lot of people appreciate.
My best friend has a GS2 and while his screen is nice, it's also tinted yellow because the colour temperature is way off, so the colours on my 1 year old Desire HD actually look better. He's not alone either there's a 200+ page thread on it. Then there's the banding issues people are having on the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note displays.
What I'm getting at is all current screens have their downsides but they're all far from being garbage.
i think that's a new incarnation of BADA OS
It's a bada os, but it'll be open-source this time.
I don't know who need this... Bada failed, Tizen will fail too.
This would be a HUGE mistake. Right now, people love Android, and some of us have quite a bit of money invested in apps and other things. I don't see many devs jumping ship either...

Reasons Not to buy an iPhone

So in what ways you think than Android is better than IOS
Heres what i got
iPhones have:
Smaller screens
Slower Data Speeds
Lower Durability
Slower prosseser
Very Boring UI
No Flash
No download support from Browser
No themes/Launcher (Unless its Jailbroken)
Anything to add here?
Camera can't compare to the Amaze
no video chat over mobile data
no third party music player or video player
no way to install apps other than through app store
TETHERED TO ITUNES FOR ALL MEDIA CONTENT -_____-

Lame ass apps, that are very unstable, eg. Infinity blade (from my own experience). Veeerryy low ram for standards that android phones have set these days. And a ui that hasn't changed for years

UI, and Screens are just your opinions. not really facts; not nececarilly a bad thing. the processor of the 4s isnt slow, but its pointless in the iphone. other than that im with you! i could never use a screen that small lol

I honestly think IOS is better and would get one for the wife if it was on T-Mobile. I can manage with Android since it allows me to do a little more than I would be able to if I had an IOS device. WHat I like about IOS is the apps are of much higher quality.
For someone like my wife the iphone would be better. She complains about the random reboots, apps crashing and some of the other annoyances that come with Android so I know she would love the iphone.

iOS is smoother than Android and handles most things better. Android wasn't meant to have a touch interface since it was first made to compete with Blackberry and other systems that used a trackball/keyboard rather than a touchscreen slate. So as a result, they didn't bother starting from scratch and decided to just implement touchscreen onto their existing revisions... Not saying Android is bad by any means, but there are things that iOS does properly that Android does not. For example, the touch delay that exists in every Android device will most likely never be solved due to the architecture of the OS - to see this delay, go play Fruit Ninja or something and you'll notice that the sword trail is always lagging behind your finger and is never directly under your finger while you're moving.
However, I despise Apple with a passion. Their products are great, but they are also immensely overpriced and restrictive. They market their products in a dishonest way to trick the common consumer into thinking that it's the greatest thing on the planet. However, they do tend to take care of their customers in terms of updates, unlike Android because even the iPhone 3GS got their latest iOS 5 update while we're still waiting for an ICS update.

+1. Example of smoothness - open web browser in both iPhone and a high end android phone like amaze, open a webpage and trying scrolling - you will see iPhone is significantly smoother than amaze. Any improvements in hardware (you can have quad core processor and a 4 gb of ram) won't make up for a not-so-good architecture. OS update is another big issue with all android manufacturers. If I buy a phone on a 2 year contract, I should get updates for 2 years. Apple provides updates for older devices as long as old hardware can handle it and look at the android world - mytouch4g slide is more than capable of running ICS but HTC/TMO won't provide update and indirectly force customers to buy new device with little to no hardware improvement long before their contract is over. Having said that, I still like my amaze for a couple extra features and data service that tmo provides.

Made an iphone user a believer today.

Have a friend i work with who has a Iphone 5. He hasn't had a Android phone since 2011, which happened to be an Xperia Play . This was basically the phone that gave him his lasting impression of Android. Up until today
We were on break and he saw me using the multi window in conjunction with pen window and goes " what the f*ck. can that do the eye scrolling thing too?" Im like yea. He says " it pauses the video when you look away at it too?" Im like yea. So for the next 10 minutes i showed him action memo, scrapbooker, 4k video, a little Asphalt 8, and S Note. The look on his face after seeing all of this was priceless enough. But then he says "f*ck this ****" and throws his phone (which was in an otterbox) on the ground jokingly. Im not kidding. I say to him "come on man your good with the Iphone 5. i know you want that 5s.) He says "na i need that sh*t in my life."
It has to be one of the most rewarding feelings ever to have that happen lol.
Haha yeah, this is my favorite thing to do. I feel rewarded when I convert people!
Seems like samsungs gimmicky features are almost made for demonstration purposes (whens the last time you used air gesture out of convenience)
The thing that gets iphone users from my experience is the photo sphere, and how you can view them using the gyro.
I remember that in my next demonstration. hehe
hehehe, That because your friend not F IFan.

Do you not also attend The Church of Android? Please, feel free to stop by this Sunday. We'll be preaching the good word of Andy Rubin and how he created Android in 7 days.
Cupcake 1:5-
Then Andy Rubin blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Wooo, you fixed someone that was brainwashed by apple It's always a good thing!
They truly are brainwashed.
After my photosphere demo this guy was trying to convince me that his iph5s panorama feature was better and mine was lacking by not having it.
He was speechless when I showed him we have stock panorama as well as photosphere.
Someone needs to make a 'how to convert an iphone believer' article.
Lol. Thats rich
Try not to bring him here, too much useless negativity here will make him rethink :-/
I was able to successfully harvested many souls with my note 2. Not sure what I'm supposed to do with them now, but I guess it's always useful to have some spares......

Once he gets it, show him the video share option... it'll blow his mind,

I have got 4 people at my office to order the note 3 , 2 others to order the S4 and 2 to change over to tmobile, at this point tmobile and Samsung should start paying me a commission
I convinced the guy who sold me my note 3 to get one.
Its always fun to go into a store and spit out more knowledge about the phones in the store than they know about.
He sold his 5 to get a 5s but got the note 3 instead.
Had a similar experience today. Went to find a working Note 3 demo unit at a retail store today. After contently checking out the Note 3 was playing around with iDevices since I was curious how many apps and browser tabs it would take to exhaust the low DRAM they're equipped with and cause memory used by background apps to be cleared thereby forcing a reload upon switching back and losing whatever I was working on. The iPad Mini is particularly bad with only 512MB DRAM where all it took was one browser tab displaying a mobile device review with a lot of comments and Apple maps with 3D enabled where task switching back to the browser caused a reload so if I was in the middle of writing a comment it would've been lost. While testing the same on iPhone 5S another customer wanders over and asks me what I thought of the iPhone 5S (he mentioned he currently owns an iPhone 4 something). While refraining from being critical such as not mentioning the toyish looking iOS 7, copy of Android's drop-down quick-access menu but swipe up and pop-up from bottom instead, non-intuitiveness with double-tapping the home button to task switch when that action is associated with zooming in (Android's long press makes more sense), what I was testing with low DRAM, etc. I merely mentioned that the experience was ok but the screen was too small and that it would be better with a bigger screen. He acknowledged and mentioned he's also looking into the Galaxy S4, I responded by suggesting the kick ass Note 3 but he says he's concerned with getting something too big then I pointed to my front pocket and asked if it looked too big and pulled out the Note 2. Commented that once you go big it's tough to go back. Shortly later I see him with the sales associate in front of the Note 3. Felt I saved a soul.
