[Q] MMS error "Can't send message..." on WiFi only - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm running the 8107 build on my unlocked v1.4 Samsung Focus.
For some reason, when I'm connected to WiFi, I'm unable to send MMS messages - when doing so, I receive a "Can't send message Try again" error.
If I disable WiFi at that point (revert to 3G) and try to resend the msg, it is sent without issue.
Whatdya' think?
Thanks!

Are you turning cellular data off and then going to wifi? You need cellular data on to send MMS. MMS can't be done over wifi.

Nope - phone just picks up the WiFi connection automatically (as it's been previously connected).
My wife has a non-unlocked v1.3 Focus, and she has no issues sending MMS when connected to the same WiFi network (?)

i have the same problem with my htc 7 pro. but i found out that it has nothing to do with wifi, the mms of wp7 are concepted only to use 3g and not wifi internet connection, it has something to do with the MMSC server where the messages come in from your device. and MMS and SMS look similar but are two different systems in message delivery.
an other way to send it over wifi is with an email to the recipient in this form [email protected] PTN is public telephone number and the carrier name is carrier specific... thats the only way sending over wifi/http.

Newby question - MMS and GPRS

Hello all,
I was wondering, in order to receive an MMS message, do I have to turn on GPRS communication, or is it automatically switched on upon receiving an MMS message?
It has to be configured on your device, GPRS and MMS that is, and it also has to be acivated by your network. I was trying to get my GPRS working and couldn't work out why it wasn't until I finally spoke to someone at O2 who had a vague idea of what they were doing and said new customers had to request activation of GPRS!
i get mms wihtout having turned grps on at the time
but when i open the msg then it connect to the network using grps
and get the mms pic, movie, sound or what ever
Ah, that clarifies!
Thanks for your replies!
With regards,
Thumper
a bit more clarification ... the MMS platform sends a special SMS to the phone (xda or other) ... if the phone is equiped for MMS the proper application (ex: MMS Composer or EZWAP 2.5) will start and it will connect through GPRS ... this requires also to have the device and the dial registered on the MMS platform .... otherwise a normal SMS will be displayed containing a URL to download the MMS from any web browser.
My GPRS connection works fine, I can browse the Internet with IE. But when I try to send a photo message (MMS), I get "Cannot connet". Does anyone know why?
if you put in the right
Server name
Gateway
and
server address
in mms composer
and you have made them turn on mms in their end (the cellphone company)
and some people need to make a new grps connections with another access point (often mms)
then i dont know
They sent me a text message that automatically entered the details in MMS composer for me (server name, server address and gateway). I found the new details there when I checked. Because I called them to activate the service (and so they sent me the text message), I'm assuming it's active from their end. I'm not aware of a different GPRS connection I should be using. There are already three connections set up: WAP CSD, WAP GPRS and Internet GPRS. Takker ellers for tilbagemelding.

Block Data but allow MMS?

I have ROM listed in sig.
I do not have a data plan, and am currently on a prepaid plan with AT&T and trying to avoid extra costs. I am using DisableData to disable both "AT&T ISP GPRS" and "Media Net".
When I disable media net, I am unable to send or receive MMS messages. So usually I have been enabling media net if I get an MMS message and disabling it again when message is done.
If I forget to turn it off, then I catch my phone connecting to edge or 3g (depending on whats available) and charging me data.
Just is a major PITA. Is there anywhere I can get MMS to pass through but disable all other data connections?
Thanks,
Shaun
Is the MediaNet connection actually incurring a charge? The other appears to be for GPRS. Sorry I have no knowledge of AT&T. My T-Mobile MMS connection is seperate fron the GPRS connection so disabling data allows MMS to function fine. It's strange that both your connections are used for GPRS.
Hello,
Have you tried disabling all data connection except MMS in TouchPro Tweak? In your ROM that should be in Tools | Tweaks | TouchPro Tweak. Find entry "Data (GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA).
Hope it works for you.
So I just got off the phone with AT&T and found out that you must have media net enabled to have MMS come through, and there is no way to block all data excpet MMS. So I guess I will just have to keep doing what I have been doing.

Unable to send Text SMS with Data on - Samsung Gio - Android

I have a Samsung Galaxy Gio on the Telus network. The phone is rooted and unlocked. (was originally with Bell)
I am unable to send text sms messages with Data Packets (aka Data) ON.
IF I turn Data Packets (Data) OFF I can send no problem, as well as when I put WIFI on (Which also deactivates Data)
When I attempt to send it simply says "FAILED"
Things I have tried:
I have contacted my service provider, they have tried to trace my failed SMS messages and cannot see them on their side.
I have tried changing and re-entering the SMSC #.
Performed a factory reset
Reflashed factory ROM
Placed a Rogers SIM in the phone and was able to send without issue
Placed a Bell SIM in the phone and was able to send without issue
Placed my SIM in 3 other phones (Google Phone, BB Bold, Iphone 3GS) and was able to send without issue
Tried Apps - GO SMS PRO and Handcent
It seems that there is a compatibility problem with Samsung GIO and the Telus network.
All other features work flawlessly, I can receive texts and surf without issue.
Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Found a person on another forum with the same phone from the Bell network unlocked, working on Telus with both DATA and OUTGOING SMS Text messages.
So I know its not all Samsung Gio phones that are effected.
So either my phone has a unique glitch or the network where I am isn't acting the same way.
Any help/suggestions are appreciated.
Did you ever consider that your SIM card could have a problem?
Tried my SIM card in other phones and works fine, can send texts with data on.
Does that rule out the SIM card or could the sim card be defective only in certain types of phones?

Any other ideas on why Data would effectively block SMS Text messages from leaving the phone?
Are you certain you have sufficient signal?
Is it definately SMS and not MMS your trying to send?
Might be worth checking your APN settings.
Had you checked your message settings in your phone? Had you checked whether the service number in your phone is proper or not? It will be also an default if you don't enter proper messaging center number, it could be also an reason that your messages are to be shown failed.

I am certain I have sufficient signal. After receving a "FAILED TO SEND" while DATA is ON I can turn data off and click and hold on the message and hit RESEND and the message sends fine.
Definately SMS - MMS works fine.
I have checked APN settings.
What I did notice about the APN settings is that Telus incorporates both data and MMS into 1 APN. My friend on Rogers has 2 separate APN settings for MMS and Data however I don't see how that would affect anything.

Yes I have auto-updated the Service #, manually inputted it in both decimal and hexidecimal, and changed to a backup service # that Telus provided for me.
Still unable to send.
I am having the same issue. I have this phone with a Telus SIM. Help!
Same problem Sasktel
Same problem with text message on sasktel with gio
no solution yet
help
I did not test this myself. (I have data of cose i have no internet for my phone) But sometime my phone wont send a sms. It keeps waiting. And i see the signal is gone. After i restart the phone the message is sms send and my signal is back.
Firware issue
I work for a tele communications company and we are seeing an increase of this situation for the gio as of Monday on our networks. It is the firmware that is preventing the phone from sending the messages. The problem has been flaged and submitted to samsung/android. They would have to perform an upgrade to the software on the devices.
Not all phones are affected the easiest way to check if your phone may have this issue is to check the plan on the phone. Under settings in about phone, bottom of the page, if you get GINGERBREAD.MUGKG3 than it will be this issue.
This is not a network related issue but firmware. It may be an inconvienence to swith data off and on but sit tight and wait for an update. Hopefully Samsung/Android find a solution soon.

[Q] MMS on T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling

I know this is being discussed in the Development forum, but I can't post anything there because I'm a new member. Anyway, just wanted to get some discussion going regarding MMS capabilities when hooked up to T-Mobile's Wi-Fi Calling feature. It seems like many of the people in the development forums are under the impression that the phone switches to cellular data to send/receive MMS messages, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case. I use Wi-Fi calling at my house where there is absolutely zero cellular reception and I can definitely send MMS messages as long as I'm on Wi-Fi. I'm not a technical expert by any means so I have no idea how exactly it works but it shows the "G" icon when I send an MMS (which I believe stands for GPRS) and MMS messages can be sent and received.
Just wondering what other people's experiences were regarding this.
Yes the "G" doesstand for GPRS, but if you are seeing the "G" when you are sending or receiving a MMS. Then this means it is kicking over to your mobile data to send or receive the MMS. I like you live in a very weak signal area and even though I have my WiFi Calling on at home my mobile data kicks on when I send or receive MMS. And just like you it is usually the "G" or the "2G"(Edge) symbol.
Now I am no expert by no means on this subject but I can tell you that MMS strickly uses mobile data as my WiFi calling adds non when I sendor recieve a MMS at home. I usually have to set my device in the window sealto get it to send or receive a MMS.
That's the thing, I get absolutely ZERO reception at my house (GPRS/EDGE/3G) but I can definitely send MMS messages as long as I am connected to Wi-Fi and actually have the Wi-Fi calling app enabled. I noticed the same thing happens when I open up the T-Mobile My Account app to check minute and data usage. The app doesn't work over Wi-Fi alone (ie. connected to Wi-Fi but without the Wi-Fi calling app enabled) but it definitely works if you have Wi-Fi calling enabled. Maybe I can get a video of it to show you what I'm talking about.
nubletdeluxe, you are right. When on WiFi calling, it uses WiFi not cellular signal to send your pics. Since the upgrade to ICS, I have tried to send many picture messages and without WiFi calling enabled, 4 out of 5 would fail and if they did go through, it would take forever! Since enabling WiFi calling, I also see the "G" but it takes seconds to send a picture message and have yet to have one fail.

[Q] Can't download or send MMS?

When I try to send an MMS it just sits there with the with the "sending" animation and keeps doing that for a few hours (yes, hours) until it fails, and when I try to download an MMS, it says that it is downloading but just fails after about a minute. I have packet data enabled, my APNs are default, and I have mobile data enabled. Any ideas?

did You switching off WiFi. MMS sends only over operator data-channel.
if Your operator non Verizon it is not possible now. You can't send/ressive MMS over non-Verizon.

if you dont have data enabled at the time you receive the msg it wont automatically download...for me at least.
its quite annoying because on the CM10 roms ive used they never download even when i turn on data.
Personally the solution to my problem turned out to be Orbot interfering with messaging somehow, after disabling it I was able to send and recieve MMS
