[Q] Is it appropriate for developers to e-mail users of their app? - General Questions and Answers

I received an e-mail earlier today from the developer of an app I downloaded to my tablet:

Hey Guys, [bleep] from [bloop] here.
Thank you all for purchasing [bloop], I of course appreciate it, and hope you have enjoyed it thus far.
I have a huge update I'm working on, should involve stuff#1, stuff#2, and stuff#3.
I hate email blasts like everyone else, so I'll get straight to the point. I need your help.
I think the small number of reviews / comments are holding the game back. The game has an awesome conversion rate (20% of the people who see the game buy it), it just needs more people to be able to find it.
If you enjoyed the game, can you please take a few minutes to visit the games "Google Play" page and leave your feedback. I'm not asking for 5 stars, just your honest opinions. You can also use this to leave feedback for me that I can use to improve the game!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=[blippetybloop]
For those who have already rated the game, I severely appreciate it.
Again, apologies for the email. A one man shop doesn't have many options available =\
Thanks!

I was wondering whether I could get the thoughts of this community on that. It really bugs me to think that the developers for all of the apps I use have my e-mail on file and can choose to use it for their own purposes or some other less appropriate purpose (e.g., selling to an ad agency for a quick buck).

I offer my graphic design skills.

Hi,
Don't know if this is the place but I fancy the thought of helping with the development of an android app or game.
I just want to take part in the growing android market.
And because I know very little about programming, I wish to make this announcement:
For more than five years I worked as a graphic designer and I am a currently unemployed. I am specialized within all areas of design from user interface to web design and 3D. Therefore, I want to take part in in any app or game.[/B]
I will not work for free if the app is a paid app or has in app purchasing.
rplus4immer[at]yahoo[dot]com is my email.
All the best,
N.
Nice gesture and great initiative.
Still here.
i offer mine too! can we collaborate in one big group ?
can i help.. maybe i can test it loll
I'm currently working on mClock but I have also been looking into doing a super metroid style game if you're interested in helping me.
Hello, if you wanna make a new UI for the FriendsRadar App on the Android Market, we give it for free, and put the names of the collaborators on the About screen.
Let me know.
I already was contacted by a few folks and took on my first project. I hope others will follow. Don't be shy to ask for my help for whatever graphics you would need, though .
Replied to everybody who contacted me to this date. Hope I didn't miss anyone
Thank you all.
I'm an Android and iOS app developer in need of some graphic designers to design some icons and glyphs.
Well, let's see it. Send me via email the details of the free app so I can play around with it and see what can be done.
rplus4immer[at]yahoo[dot]com is my email.
kudos to you for doing this

Do you have an iDevice to test it out on? The iOS version is actually much more mature than the Android one and I'm planning on releasing the iOS version first.
No, I don't. As I stated, I want to help the development of free android apps and games.
If whatever you are developing has a free android version, I'm the man to see.
Now available mainly for hard body (lowpoly or not) 3D Modeling/Texturing.
Sadly, I am now unemployed and I will have a greater amount of free time on my hands.
I will now also take on paid projects as well ( where the case ). So feel free to drop me a line.
Thanks!

App contest!

I've just updated my Payday Android app and I'd like to start a new project. As they say, necessity is the mother of all invention so I'm asking you guys. What kind of app would you most benefit from? What app have you longed for that just isn't out there yet, or if its out there and doesn't meet your needs. I want you guys to send me PM's or Email at [email protected]gmail.com with your ideas for an Android application. I'll take suggestions for the next week or so and pick several realistic ones. I'll then add those to a poll and let you guys vote on which one you want, or the one you would get the most use out of. The person who made the original suggestion will get a special prize and a free copy of the app once its finished.
In the case of more than one person suggests the Same winning App, the first person who contacted me with the idea will get the prize, however everyone who contacted me with the winning idea will get a copy of it free.
And please send me a PM or Email because I've read too many articles about forum lurkers on here snatching ideas, so this should help deter that somewhat. So let the suggestions roll. Thanks guys.
I think it's best idea
I know that people looking for call recording app on Froyo (Android 2.2).
There is idea that OS don't let this, but, maybe, you so good programmer that is not prolem for you.
Ill add it to the submit list, thanks.
So, what you are saying is you want a bunch of ideas on new apps from people and you want them all to your self, by offering up some free t-shirt or something?
Nice. Wish I'd thought of it.
I'm thinking a tax helper, for like tax season lol. And help with balancing your checkbook and junk. Sounds good.

[Q] Advertising my first app

Hello dear fellow XDA members
About 2 months ago, I got interested in Android App Development. Having no Java experience, I looked around the internet for tutorials on it.
Fast forward to today and here I am, able to make some basic yet useful applications. I've been thinking about making a few bucks by in-app advertising and in-app purchases. I have a few questions:
1) Do you think it is advisable to put ads in my app? What if the number of downloads are pretty good?
2 How many downloads should I have on my app so as to put ads in my app successfully?
3) Is admob free? Are there any fees that I have to pay so as to get ads on my app?
4) How, where and which type of adds will I get for my app? Is there some specific procedure to go through so as to add advertisements to my app?
Answers to the above questions and a basic step-by-step (along with all the money I have to pay for ads) mini tutorial of how advertising should be done would be very helpful
Thanks in advance
p.s. XDA is awesome :"D
Why you even want to put ads in your app
make it open source and developers will support you and you will get many donates for you

Thanks but that wasn't the type of answer I was looking for.
Anyways, I was just curious about the ads part. I'll give a thought bout making it open source. Maybe sometime later but not now.
So if you could just clarify my doubts based on the ads part, I'd be very thankful

Hey try this out, its a link to a Google search page. I looked a couple of the results - it will be a better answer than you've been getting.

Thanks but that wasn't what I was looking for. As I said, I will look into making some of my apps open source but later on. Not now.
So if you'd answer my questions regarding ads, I'd be satisfied

Umm, how is app of the day related to advertising?
It's something different as far as I know.
Could someone please answer my questions regarding the ads part?
Thanks

You can try asking some companies.

Surprise-surprise. I already did use Google. Didn't get any proper answers that could satisfy me. Hence I asked.
Again, thanks for the piping hot answers etc etc
This is a quote from another developer from the Unity forums. The link is at the end of the quote, I copied and pasted this is unaltered.
"I hear the average cost to acquire a new user via AdMob is about $2 per user. If you charge $1 buck per game (earning yourself 70c,) that's definitively not cost effective, and worse: the $2 is more of an average based on the fact that most people using AdMob are freemium games. If you are actually selling your game, it's very likely fewer users will even look at your game even if they click on the ad.*
Download a game with ads, and look at what gets promoted. There is a reason why most the stuff there are free games. Not to mention: if a user is seeing those ads, it's very likely because they rather see ads than pay to buy the ad-free version, what makes you think that kind of user will click on an ad to BUY a game. However, many may get a free game, and once playing, the game may employ psychological games to trigger the gambling urge to spend money with IAP."

Hope that helps on one of your questions. I research, I'm not a developer. There was a lot more that I found, but I can't do all the work.?
Change your keywords up.

[APP] Relish, our new lunch invite app!

If you're like us, you realize just how difficult it can be to get everyone together when it comes to eating out. You have to text/email everyone involved, or worse, call everyone up multiple times just to confirm details.
Whether it's for business meetings, company lunches, or a casual grub with friends, this process is usually very annoying. Where do we want to go? How's the food? Is it expensive? These are just some of the questions that come up when inviting people out to eat.
Relish solves these problems in a clean, simple, and intuitive way. Featuring a beautiful UI that's guaranteed to make your mouth water(so will the food). Please check us out at relishwith DOT us . I lost my other login to XDA and had to create a new account, sucks that I can't post links until after 10 posts
Anyways, would love it if you guys took a minute to check us out! Thank you so much

Smartwatch research: Samsung users needed!

Hi everybody!
First off, thank you to Mike Channon for approving this post.
My name is Sam Penny and I'm conducting research with the University of Manchester. I'm looking at the attributes of smartwatches that users consider to be most important. We're hoping the research will help smartwatch companies to refine their products!
If you own a smartwatch and you could give 5 - 10 minutes of your time to do this questionnaire, I would be very grateful! You access the survey here: https://goo.gl/NMMsze
Most of our respondents are currently Apple Watch users. So anybody with a Samsung Gear that's willing to contribute would be making a big impact!
I'm also giving away some Amazon giftcards as a thank you, if anybody likes giftcards
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me a message.
Thanks in advanced, and have a great day!
Sam
Just finished the survey. I currently own a Huawei watch and should have a refurbished gear s2 classic in the next day or two.
Hi Vicvon!
Thanks a lot for going through my survey.
I really should add an option for if people own more than one smartwatch! Thanks for the heads up!

Yes, I have several but responded using my gear s3
Samsung Gear s2 Classic uses a proprietary cradle to program with, so unfortunately it's impossible to get inside the watch save for screen and buttons (that I am aware of).

Thanks everybody! The survey will be open for a few weeks so if you know anybody that you think would like to contribute towards the research then feel free to share the link.
Like I said, if anybody has any questions send me a message any time.
Done.
Now that I think about it, if like to have seen some questions on why users have a smart watch.
Mine is the s2 3g. I bought it not for the fun of a smart watch, but for the safety and convenience of having a phone on me at all times. Instead of buying a phone for our kids so we can keep in touch, I've thought how much better and cheaper a watch is.
Anyway. Sorry for the digression.

Hey Merlin!
Digressions are great because they feed thinking! Especially from somebody that clearly has experience with smartwatches.
I'm testing a sort of older theory in a new context – which may mean some of the questions are not 100% spot on for smartwatches, which is a limitation of my research.
Safety is an interesting issue, and definitely something I'll look into.
Thanks again to everybody that completed the survey. The response from everyone has been awesome.
Just finished the survey.
Done
Currently i use the Gear S2, dont like very much tizen but i like the idea of using a smartwatch as a shadow of my phone, or even replace my phone in event of an emergency
Finished and thanks for the interest. I would suggest questions about reasons for and benefits of usage - check email, health device, etc. For example I first bought a smart watch because I am hard of hearing and was missing work emails. Now Im retired and its more of an emotional thing as I like the technology and I use it to track my workout. Also a question about what more is wanted, say longer battery life or better waterproofing. Just a suggestion.
Finished survey. Was expecting questions about most used functions, what are actual perceived benefits, etc, Found the survey pretty generic and wonder what the objectives related to survey are.
Hi guys! Sorry for the delay... it seems the XDA emails have been going to my spam folder

Thanks for feedback Roger. A few people have suggested looking into benefits such as health apps. This is a really interesting area and might make up my next paper!

Hey OnnoJ. I'm testing a specific 'technology acceptance' model called UTAUT2. It's the universal theory for the acceptance and use of technology, 2!
You can find the paper here: http://s3.amazonaws.com/academia.ed...e=Unified_theory_of_acceptance_and_use_of.pdf
I've mentioned before, it doesn't get into the specifics of smartwatches. It is a very general overview. However, it's never been done in a smartwatch context before – which is why I wanted to test it.
Survey was completed
Done.
Did the survey. Glad you mentioned the model you are testing. I have the S2 Classic and for me it's a useful tool not particularly fun or entertaining. I can keep my phone on silent, track health and...tell time! Now that I'm using android pay I don't use it for loyalty cards like I used to.
