[Q] HTC One S vs. Sony Xperia S vs. ? - General Questions and Answers

So, my Samsung Galaxy S 24 month contract is ending in and I want to get a new phone in 2-3 months. SGS is great and fast phone (when CM7/9 is installed) but on stock it was ridiculous (on software level) + it only has 512MB ram.
I have been checking reviews of HTC One S and Sony Xperia S, while HTC seems to be much more powerful with it's Snapdragon S4, it lacks some features like 720p screen, NFC etc.
Couple of questions:
1.) Which one has better support for Cyanogenmod/AOKP roms?
2.) Is Snapdragon S3 really ~2 times slower (based on synthetic benchmarks) on normal use, I mean, is it capable of running latest software and games for 2 years like SGS hardware did?
3.) Is there any other model I should compare with these?
I would love to get HTC One XL (Snapdragon S4 + 720p screen) but that model will never come to Finland.
So which phone would you get?

Htc One x. There is like 20other threads jus loke this. You could have used them to get your answer

none of the 2.....now expects the galaxy s3

I say no to samsung for now...
EDIT: Samsung has probably the worst support for open source roms

Huawei Ascend D Quad?......HTC One S and Sony Xperia S have problems that do not justify the price paid

[Q] Which device to choose? [Android]

After a lot of time with the N97 and a lot of nerves I decided to buy my first Android device.
The first problem is that I replace a device every 3 years.
The second problem is: after hours in Wikipedia, YouTube and reading reviews I really dont know yet what to choose .
The devices I could think of are:
Galaxy s2 - the best but the most expensive 520€.
Optimus 3D - is it wise to buy the first device that supports 3D? 560€
Optimus 2X - Most worthwhile but two more years will not be old? 399€
HTC Sensation - Do not know him. 560€
What do you recommend?
I advise you to wait for the nexus 3, the n97 should be able to hang on.

the nexus 3 will arrive to my country 1 year after the Launching and the price will be overrated.
I fly next week to italy and I want to buy the cellphone there.
there are really big different between the phones I wrote and the nexus 3?
Get the galaxy S2, also 3D is way overrated. You don't need it at all.
In my opinion 3d on a smartphone is useless, but it depends on personal preference and tastes.
I like lg phones on the hardware side but not on the firmware/software side (too buggy from what I tried, lg takes forever to update their phone's os, etc)...
The Sensation is a great phone, but I like the Samsung more.
If I were you I would buy the S2 (if the high price tag isn't a big problem for you).

And with Samsung giving the Cyanogen Mod developers a phone, it will be interesting to follow the future of this phone.
In your place I would buy a Galaxy S2 Because this smartphone in my opinion is the best device with Android at the moment.
Wait for the new Nexus!
Yup all the way for the galaxy s2, I am a proud user of the galaxy s and it is just great. the possibilities of the phone are just great. And I just love to customize my phone, Roms etc..

What's your next device?

What's your next device and why?
List your current device as well.
Current Device: At the moments I own a HTC Sensation
Mine might be the Samsung Galaxy S3 because of the supposedly great specs.
-12 mega pixel camera
-Promise of having at least one day guaranteed of battery
-Quad core
These are my main reason.

Certainly an utopic phone for me :
-4.6" 720p screen (or more, maximum 5")
-Tegra 3 SoC
-32Go internal memory
-and the most important : ICS without constructor's skin.

Currents are ATT SGS2 and my workhorse Nokia E6. Next device, dunno, I doubt my Nokia will break before the world ends XD
First was zte blade. Now im using optimus black(white version) next ??? Really hard to say, maybe some 4 core device in few years. xD

My current device is: HTC Incredible S
My next device is deep unknown. Because I seek for something with 4" screen (best size of screen for me) and better performance (so 2-core or 4-core CPUs devices). Unfortunately, at this time there is only one device with this specifications: Iphone 4S (nevermind it´s actually 3,5" screen). But I don´t like Iphone for many reasons...
So the conclusion is, that I must stay with my HTC for another year. And wait for a proper descendent.

Current is Samsung Galaxy GIO from Virgin Mobile only because I got it for free and got a $100 gift card from Future Shop. lol
I'll definitely be interested in the new SGS 3. I'm happy with the quality of my Samsung device even though its a low range phone, so Samsung is in my good books.
HTC edge/supreme will be my next device as long as it hits telstra so i can have att! 3g bands
Currently, I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 on At&t (i777, non LTE), This is an amazing phone. Right now, running MIUI and overclocked to 1.6GHz, it blows everything else out of the water. The only things I don't like about it is the battery cover and screen resolution (800x480). The Galaxy S 2 should have had a qHD at least at launch, but if for some reason they would have had to make it something other than SAMOLED +, then forget it.
When its my time to upgrade, I basically want ^this phone^ with an awesome QWERTY! Unfortunately, no company is making an awesome and powerful slider anymore...
I am hoping to get the next gen of phones with quad core

Galaxy Note 2 because I won't go any smaller than 5.3"
I currently own a flipout for phone (just phone) and a galaxy player 5' for eveything else.
So I might as well get a Galaxy Note! Using wifi tethering is cool, but 3G directly on my 5' device would be appreciated lol.
So I'm not a noob to all this but I could use a little advice. I'm with AT&T and due for an upgrade. I currently have an Atrix 4G (which I love dearly and is rooted and unlocked running Neutrino) but I have no idea what I should upgrade to. Samsung seems to constantly get tremendous support from dev's so I'm kinda leaning towards the SGS2 Skyrocket but I'm not entirely sure. Any advice? Here's a couple devices I've been considering:
1. SGS2 Skyrocket
2. Sony Xperia Ion (pending release)
3. Samsung Galaxy Note
4. HTC something. I haven't paid enough attention to what they have to know which is the most supported device.
Any help would be great.
Current: Droid Razr
Possible phones just for all time sake:
Droid Razr Maxx(Just because of the battery upgrade)
....
Thats all I got so far lol....
I actual just collect the Droid Series from Moto
So far I got
OG Droid
Droid X & X2
Droid 2,3, waiting for 4(Finally with 4G)
I wont touch Droid Charge or INC(1 or 2)
Current: Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100
Next?: SIII probably. Not sure if I really need to upgrade again.

Need help choosing a new phone

Hey guys, I'm still pretty new here at the XDA forums, so my apologies if this is in the wrong forum (This is where I saw it fitting )
Here's my situation.
I'm currently in the market for another smartphone, but don't know what I'm doing anymore (since after a while the phones all start to seen the same.)
Keep in mind it has to be a GSM device. I'm looking into Pre-Paid because honestly I don't want to deal with AT&T's outrageous $90+ a month and horrible data plans of only 1GB or 2GB
I'm a college student going into Petroleum Engineering, and deal with a lot of math etc. I want a phone that I can completely make use of.
With that being said, I've been looking into (for some reason) the Dell Venue Pro with WinMo OR the Galaxy Note..... I have big hands so this would make more sense. The Formula and Shape match with the s-pen sound and look amazing. Only problem is I'm stuck between the i717 and the N7000? I don't know what to choose from or if this is even my best bet.
Can someone clear things up or make other suggestions?
IMHO: just sum things out. list down all your requirements in a smartphone, that may help you decide.
you may also consider future upgrades (android OS etc..) from the maker.
good luck!
From my point of view I am really satisfied with Galaxy S2, so I can tell you, that with Galaxy Note you cannot do a mistake. Galaxy S2 has quite good development base here on xda.
So the Galaxy Note is a GS2 based device?
I also have another question. Let's say I buy the AT&T Version off of Ebay from someone who never used it, or did use it for a day. Would the Samsung manufacturer's warranty still be valid?
i would suggest the exhibit 2 4g. i used it for a couple months and its a pretty good phone for the price you pay. its pretty easy to root as well ;D
My opinion is to get the international version. It has FM. And also the video editor doesn't work too well on the AT&T. Besides, I wouldn't trust AT&T with my updates, that's a long wait. Plus I'd avoid the bloatware, samsung's apps + at&t apps = too much stuff you don't need.
I'd skip windows until mobile gets 8.
Galaxy S3......would not be bad
Galaxy Nexus, HTC ONE X, or Galaxy SIII these are all very good phones.
galaxy s3
Galaxy S3? I had ran across a few reviews and it was to my understanding that the S3 wasn't much of an improvement. It could have been a biased opinion though. What's new on the Galaxy S3?

I was really interested in the One X as well. It seems like I'd be waiting a while for a lot of development on it though. Since I was looking for something with 3G or 4G capabilities on TMO.
You can
You can choose between S3, One X. They are high-performance and 4.8 or 4.7" is big aswell, so you'll not have problems.

The galaxy s3 has a quad core processor, HD 720p screen, better graphics processor, more storage(32gb internal model with slot) newest android (4.0.4) Samsung extras ( s voice/ multitasking video player/ direct dial/ that feature that follows your eyes and keeps the screen awake/ newer Bluetooth / better DNLA / NFC ) so it's an upgrade of the nexus.

Yes. The quad core chip does not support LTE. Thus LTE version of the phone (Verizon? AT&T?) Will be dual core. Confirm Exynos chip before purchase. It'll be available in white and blue.

Why no one considers Sony Ericsson?
I like the phone (which is more "phone friendly" than GS3) and the Bravia is a great engine....Xperia S features also a 12 Mpx full HD camera, dual-core @ 1.5 Ghz...and a really nice design...
Not to talk about the cost, which is pretty inferior to S2 or 3...
Come on, it is a phone to consider...
(ps: I have a GS2...)

Honestly I've owned a few Sony Ericsson devices and they were amazing! I did consider a few, but I actually have no clue about these Sony Xperia devices (since my SE were all non-smartphones) Could you educate me a tad?
GSM? Easy to root/unlock etc? Will it work on TMO 4g? etc.
The i717 Galaxy Note is the AT&T version and will only work on the T-mobile 4g when you hack it in some way. The international version (N7000) will not get T-mobile 4g at all.
That being said the only major difference is that the i717 sports a dual core snapdragon s3, while the N7000 has a dual exynos cpu, which blows the snapdragon s3 out of the water.
If you're planning to be on T-mobile, I really would recommend the galaxy nexus as it is unlocked and will work with the 4g and has a huge development base. Keep in mind that the HTC One X will not work on T-mobile 4g as well. If you really want a Note, then get the AT&T version. Otherwise, you can wait for the Note to come to T-mobile, which will be sometime in July.

Sony Devices will work on 4g. All the new Sony 2012 Xperia phones come with fixed memory, non removable battery and no memory card slot. Those will most likely brick easier (exception is the Sola which has a slot)
If you want a Sony I recommend the Arc S. The phone is very stylish, I like the design better than Sony Xperia S,and seeing as the essentials are in the Arc S( and both are dual cores) id go with it.
Sony do hold out on batteries especially the 2012 phones,I'd get a generic one for the Arc S.
Bravia Engine is brilliant, but Sony phones have comparatively lesser RAM(512 opposed to 1GB) so it's not a multitasking superhero, but won't lag.
You could get a good deal for the Arc S seeing as it is not king of the hill anymore. It's not as plastic as the Sony Xperia S and the only difference in camera is megapixels, both are Exmor R. You won't be disappointed.

[Q] xperia s vs galaxy s2

Basically my phone died n I need a new one and I have some how ended up buying both of these phones and was wondering if there were any recommendations on either I need the phone to last 8-12 months and don't mind attempting custom roms is the xperia s actually that much better and will it last without touching it I like the fact the s2 has micro ad card aswell but one has to be sold off
Oh the s2 is unlocked and the xperia s is orange locked
I prefer Galaxy S II....although its an old phone, it still gives tough competition to others and it has many CUSTOM ROMS and other stuffs too...that's the benefit of older phones.
While as go for XPERIA S if you like HD Display and Quad core CPU..etc.
Its your choice...

Is Nexus S still a Good buy?

I'm planning on buying a new phone this April after my exams.
My budget is real tight, and it goes upto INR18000-19000 tops ($350 approx by today's rate). I have found A nexus s for real cheap, in new condition on a site. Should I go for it, or should I wait for the s3 mini? Nexus S is a great phone, and as long as it gets the KLP (5.0) update from CM, I have no problem with it.
Please advise me. Thanks a bunch in advance!!

Get a Galaxy S2 i9100. It's around $300 and a much better buy. If you can afford it, get a Note N7000. 16GB storage, plus MicroSD card slot, SAMOLED Plus display (Non-Pentile), Dual-Core Exynos 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM (very important, as the Nexus S only has 512MB), 8MP camera that is known to be amazing.
It's a better phone. I would pick the S2 i9100 over the Nexus S, or even get the AT&T Galaxy S2 i777. It's the same exact phone as the i9100, except it also has NFC and a slightly different button layout (all capacitive keys instead of a physical home button).
THE AT&T VERSION IS ONLY $200-300. Some are even going for $200! Definitely get it. It's an amazing device that can run i9100 (same hardware) with a few tweaks. It has tons and tons of development.

It doesn't matter. Just get an unlock code for it for cheap. It's a GSM phone just like any other.
Nexus S is so outdated - please don't buy it. Google has stopped support for it and also similar hardware you can get better phones for ~10K rs. If you don't want much developer / ROM support, there are many options:
AT&T Pantech Burst - get through eBay Global Easy Buy - my current phone, just awesome and available < 10K from GEB. (I got mine used for $75 through a friend coming from USA)
Huawei Snapdragon S2 models - IDEOS X5 / Honor / IDEOS X5 Pro - most are very good and are great value for money in ~10K
HTC One V - another Snapdragon S2 model with ICS - great phone, but a bit expensive at ~15-16K
Xperia models based on NovaThor dualcore in sub-15K are also good.
I have my Nexus S for about a year and a half. With some custom rom, in my opinion it's still comparable with most of the other stuff out there.
Anyway I would rather take the GNex and in a year, there will still be some developer whos building some great rom for your phone.
