Have had my One S (black) since a week now.
On few occasions so far, I've noticed intermittent radio drop outs. The phone suddenly looses network (3G/2G) reception for certain amount of time (5-10 minutes). Along with that, GPS reception is also stopped.
This has happened couple of times so far, both times when using GPS-intensive application like GPS Status or Blitzer.de running in the foreground.
Flipping Airplane mode (on/off) will remedy the situation.
Anyone else experiencing something similar? Apart from this issue, the phone is working flawlessly.
Thanks,
G.
Yes i'm having this problem. Getting my phone replaced so hoping its a dodgy phone.
I even did a factory reset incase it was an app i'd installed causing the issue.
Thanks. Let me know if the replacement will work better.
Also, if you have found a way to replicate this, so I can show it at the shop, please let me know.
As for others - can anyone share their experience using apps like GPS status, Google Navigation, etc... and possible drop-outs using them?
Thanks,
g.

Mine doesn't seem to be GPS related so there is still a chance it could be my network playing up and not the phone (although I did ring and ask, and they said all was fine). Im in Manchester new and i'm having issues, back on the Wirral last weekend it was 100% fine. I will monitor the situation.
i hope it is a dodgy phone, Im receiving mine any time now... As a replacement for my Sensation which suffered terrible signal / wifi issues due to the antenna design..
I really hope its not the same on this phone, I will be gutted !

Any news on this I am using Waze as a sat nav and have noticed that I am getting gps drop outs whilst using it ?
Ben
Just finished a call with the customer-satisfaction team in HTC Europe.
I left them poor feedback after several email support sessions about this networking issue (signal drop, signal switching 3G/H, WiFi issues + BT + GPS) and they called me to check why.
I repeated the details already spread here in the forum and was advised to do a factory reset.
I mentioned the fact that several users have already tried that with no success so she proposed me to send it back for repair.
She couldn't let me know when an OTA will be sent.
It seems as if they either play "stupid" or really don't know anything.

I am having issues and wanted to see if anyone else has this problem. Verizon already sent me a new phone and I already have the same problem with it. They told me they will take up to 15 days to investigate the issue. I think its a software or possibly hardware issue, not a network issue.
I get data dropouts - NO 1X, 3G or 4G! Cant use GPS and any apps requiring data connection. It happens every so often and sometimes have to restart my phone.
1-Way audio calls - Person calls me or I call them, I can hear them talking but they can't hear me
Who else is having any of these issues, please choose a poll option from above and leave a comment if you wish.
I voted Rooted, Stock ROM no problems, but when I was Stock I also had no problems.
I am rooted with stock ROM and get the same dropouts as you. Restarting my phone seems to fix it and if that doesnt then pulling the battery out while the phone on does. Annoying that I have to do that but at least I get my data back.
I'm not rooted yet. I have experienced a few data drops. Toggling airplane mode works to get data back. Once, however, I toggled airplane, and the phone couldn't seem to disable the radio. Did a reboot to fix that.
I'm having data drops quite frequently and its becoming pretty annoying
I'm rooted with stock Rom I hope Verizon might be able to help
Stock, with data drops, but not how you describe. I voted before I read your post. My data problem is no 3G. I haven't been in a 4G area yet and if I'm not on wifi, there is no data connection.
Kjjb I'm also having the no 3g problem as well I started a thread about but I haven't gotten a response yet
Rooted, custom ROM and have occasional data drops. Annoying.

Couple of different temporary fixes described there.
I am going crazy here. All day yesterday constant drops in all data types. No bad phone calls, but only talked with a few people yesterday. Today my data drops continue non stop. Has happened 3-4 times already.
I am going to call VZW and *****. They said it would take up to 2 weeks to diagnose my problem. That puts me outside the return window and I already sold my dInc.
I have looked far and wide for a fix to my plagued Nexus S GPS and WiFi Signal problems. I tried GPS Test and erased all cached AGPS data. NO Towers show up. Left phone sitting there next to my window for more than 30 minutes.
Wifi Signal is always one bar while my iPod, Samsung Focus, HP Veer all get three to four bars. Including different SIM cards all recently new.
I've always tried the no battery cover trick to no end. Flashed several radios for my I9020A that i bought at best buy and nothing has helped.
I'm on 2.3.4.
Any ideas before I return this phone as a defective and give another a try?
As for the GPS, this is some sort of issue with the phone. There have been videos on YouTube explaining that it's something to do with the back cover they chose: they found that the GPS signal was stronger with the back cover removed. Not too practical.
I too have issues while using Navigation (on a bus...or even in a car sometimes...it must have a lead lines roof or something) with the Nexus S that weren't present in the Nexus One (which could lock onto satellites in a basement :what. This looks like something you can try to DRM, but it may not improve.
As for the Wifi signal, how far are you from the access point? What wireless technology are you setting up on your access point? (802.11a, b, g, or n?). If it's n? Are you trying to use the phone with a 5ghz N router? Finally, is there anything between your router and the phone that could cause interference?

Thanks for the reply chris.
I have major issues even outside. the most accurate I've seen the phone pinpoint is 2500 meters accuracy with clear skies and such.
As for my router, its a BHN SBG6580. Basically Motorola Surf Board. It's supposed to go up to N. No There isn't any kind of interference otherwise my other devices wouldn't pick up a good signal right?
Please will anyone suggest anything I really like my nexus s and it's My first real Android coming from window phones and the iPhone 4
Okay so interesting find. If I tether my nexus s to my iPod my iPod can locate itself within 20 meters where as my nexus can't locate itself with about a huge margin error where I should be. My iPod gets GPS from my Nexus S giving off wifi
Does this mean it could be an android bug causing his problem ?
That's odd. It looks like Google knows where the phone is (err..where the access point with the ESSID of your phone is) but the phone isn't picking up on it.
There's a program on market called GPS Toolkit (something like that) that has an option to refresh your AGPS cache this may help you get a fix more quickly. If this doesn't work out, it may well be worth it to get the phone replaced. Oh...and if you're not using stock firmware....give that a try as well.
If none of that works, and you're not able to resolve your wireless issues, you may want to consider taking the phone back or RMAing it. This combination of issues sounds a bit strange.

Thanks again for the reply Chris.
It looks like I'm going to bring it back to stock how I got it and return it for an exchange or just wait or for another AT&T phone that is actually decent. By the way it is on the stock ROM just rooted.
If the replacement if I do get one issued still has the problems I am at lost then. I had tried GPS test from the market and the one you mentioned without any resolve to my problem
Hi guys
I've tried researching this issue from time to time but have never been able to find any definitive information. A couple of threads around the traps detailing similar problems, but that's it. Anyway, what happens is this: the phone will be showing a couple of bars or whatever, but there actually isn't any signal at all. Calls can be initiated, but wont actually connect, and then can't be ended either. The only way to resolve the issue is to reboot the phone, or activate airplane mode and then deactivate it again (which tends to take considerably longer than a simple reboot). I'm calling it a radio crash because that's what it seems to be, but I could of course be wrong about what is actually going on under the hood.
This post is basically part of an effort to diagnose the problem before I decide what this phone's future will be (have a new, different model on the way now).
Thanks for reading, and any advice/information will be much appreciated
It sounds as if you have a defective phone, or it could be you carrier.
Have you tried a different phone.
Do other people have the same problem with that carrier
You could also think of it like this, carrier problem, you can connect to wifi if it doesnt have internet connection, it still can show full bars but nothing will load

I have an SGS3 now, with the same SIM in it (cut down to micro of course). Average signal strength (as reported by third party apps that don't pad) is about the same, but no dropouts at all (as monitored and reported by the No Signal Alert app). However the SGS3 supports both my carrier frequencies, and the Atrix 2 doesn't. Having said that, the SGS3 seems to stay on 2100MHz all the time anyway where I am.
I've also put a different SIM in my Atrix 2, from a network that is more compatible (850/2100), and although the dropouts are less frequent, they are still occurring. However, I haven't had a "radio driver crash" in over a week. The dropouts have only been momentary too, lasting no more than a few seconds, 1-3 times per day (mostly in the afternoon).
I'm also planning to charge the phone up and leave it at a couple of other locations for a day or two while continuing to monitor signal interruptions. Should be interesting.
Thanks for the reply
Just a quick update: left the phone at another location for a few days where the average signal strength is stronger, and not a single dropout was logged during that time. In certain areas this phone is obviously not as good as some others at maintaining a signal, but I don't think the dropouts themselves are indicative of a fault given this new information.
The previous instances of radio lockups/crashes are still haunting me a little, but this strange phenomenon is still yet to occur again. I also forgot to mention that I'd previously done a full restoration of the official 4.0.4 ICS release in order to return to the phone completely to stock, which might have something to do with that. Previously it was rooted, with only some minor modifications, but I guess it's not beyond the realm of possibility.
Wait i have an idea
Send me your apn data.
Motorola doesnt have the best antennas either.
Also does it crash at a certain time after it is turned on or is it random?
Sent from my SOUL
I'm experiencing an unusual issue where my phone will have full bars and not have data, or some times just drop all bars and data for several minutes. Some times a reboot fixes it but not always; the data comes and goes as it pleases. The issue seems to be more persistent with data drops than signal. The areas in which I'm losing data connection I've always had a strong connection in the past.
My first thoughts was a software issue but now I'm not so sure. I'll explain what I've tried and hopefully someone has some ideas.
a) Clean install of Cyanogenmod 10.2, and 10.1. In the past I had no signal issues with either.
b) Flashed the latest radio i727UCMC1 (was already flashed but did it again to be sure).
c) Checked APN settings. The settings seemed fine but since the issue is intermittent I don't think this is the problem.
d) Scanned for available networks and tried several of them. This resulted in no service on all but one, which was the default.
I'm working on getting back to stock right now but I was hoping for some insight while I do so.
Thanks.
if it still happens on stock and you tried it a different location then some hw prob like the antenna connection or the modem chip is dying, search this forum for "antenna" as it could be helpful

Interesting, and yes it's still occurring on stock. I heard that AT&T is having issues but it's been a couple days now. If it is hardware I'd be surprised as the phone hasn't faced any devastating drops lately.

The wifi is turning off randomly as well. It isn't dropping signal, it's literally becoming disabled and then re-enabled again. Sounds like my radios are tweaked or the antenna is shot. Already tried flashing the radio though. I'm not sure how helpful trying to boost the signal will be given that wifi is dropping too.
i had the same problem after a emmc change, wound up changing the motherboard, not what u wanted to hear !!! sorry fixed it though.
I just started playing with my wife's new idol 3 phone. everything is great so far with the exception of when wifi is turned on I noticed that cellular signal turns off and on sporadically. When wifi is off, the cellular signal never drops.
Updated!!!!!! ALCATEL THANKS!!!
The WiFi and Cellular signal issue is gone!! New update is great.
I have not noticed that. I leave my Wi-Fi on and connects when home without issue. I've check cell signal levels regularly on new phones. My first impression with this phone is that the cell reception is excellent.

I've noticed that a couple times as well. I assumed it was my SIM card as I changed carriers the same time I got this phone. It's not a deal breaker for me as I actually don't use the phone for calls much anyway. But yeah, it needs to be fixed. Just waiting for the next update.
Great, i thought maybe it was her phone in particular. I mean, I accepted the current update thinking that would solve the issue, but it didn't. Same story.....when wifi is on, the cellular signal turns off, on, off, on....maybe within 5 second intervals. Im shocked many people haven't complained about this.
if it wasn't for your response I was going to return the phone back to Amazon and exchange it for another one.
other than that I think the phone is excellent for the money and since my wife really isn't into development and rooting, for her this is the perfect replacement for her defective S4. however I would still like to be able to install a custom recovery at least.
My issue isn't anywhere near as bad as yours I would say. If yours is turning on and off a lot them you may want to replace it. I notice mine turns off once a day for a few seconds but I'm sure it does it more and I just don't see it.

I've used my phone to tether a few times and noticed the cell signal drops now and again....there is an app but I can't remember the name..something like "connection stabalizer" that toggles airplane mode on and off when it detects a dead connection....it might do the trick.
I have never experienced any of my previous phones do that, so i will most likely be sending it back for an exchange from Amazon.

I have never experienced this either. Have you tried a factory reset yet? I may try that in a couple of days and see what that does for me.
Well see, before i took the latest update the problem existed.........then, after the latest update the issue still exists. So i don't think a factory reset will do it but i will before i actually mail it out.
I reset the phopne and installed a mobile network detect app that notifies me when the signal drops. we'll see what happens.
I have no job so I have the time to blow
I am having the same problem. I am losing the signal repeatedly. It goes to no service then comes on to two or three bars even when I am in the exact same location.
So far so good. 6 hours later and no signal loss yet. On another note, the reset fixed an issue I forgot to mention. when downloading from the play store the download would start and immediately get stuck at 66kb. I would have to start and stop the download two to five times before the app actually downloaded. I just finished installing all my apps without an issue.

Borghi, so your WiFi is on when this occurs too huh?
I will lose signal when on WiFi with LTE enabled. Switch to WCDMA/GSM and it doesn't happen. Weird. Going to factory reset this weekend when my new SD card comes.

Wow so maybe this is a 100% Idol 3 manufacturing issue that demands for a recall.
Me returning the phone for another one is futile. I mean who doesn't want to keep their phone on LTE???
It might also just be a firmware issue.

It's been 28 hours and as care as I know I still have not have a dropped cell signal after the factory reset. If you have an issue will the cell radio try a factory reset first before returning it.

Mostly. Wi-Fi was off about 6 hours while I was sleeping. I'm using Network Signal Info Pro to tell me when I lose signal. I know it works cuz I turn on airplane mode and it notified me. I carry the phone around the house so I don't miss a notification. So far in 33 hours still no signal loss.
