Hi All,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I have had a search around for the correct forum to post this in - sorry if it is the wrong one...
I have recently bought a Zenithink ZT-280 c91 for my Nan to get her on the internet, I am trying to simplify it as much as possible and have come across a problem that no amount of googling has seemed to clear up.
The pad has 4 hardware buttons (Options, Home, Back and Search), however as it has ICS on it, it also have the ICS virtual buttons.
I want to remove these virtual buttons but keep the task bar if possible, having 2 sets of buttons is likely to confuse the old dear.
All threads ive seen so far relate to disabling the hardware buttons but keeping the on screen ones? The task bar is useful and id like to keep it (or if there is an alternative option then that would be great if i can just scrap the buttons!).
I have tried replacing the home launcher - this hasnt done anything so far!
Any help would be greatly appreciated
goto settings >> launcher>>home screen>>there will be settings for that
else use other launcher such as adw,ss,360 launcher..
There are no settings for disabling the buttons, adding a new launcher doesnt make a difference, the buttons remain?
I found instructions on how to enable the virtual buttons on any ROM. From what I can see it should just be a case of using the word "false" instead of "true".
http://goo.gl/VAKqU
Good luck
I did see that one but was hoping there was something even simpler - guess ill have to bite the bullet and give it a shot if not - thanks
there is a youtube vid for this.. haven't tried it yet though
link since I can't get the YT link to work
I would like to thank you guys..
I was going to ask this question but found fortunately it already asked and answered..
Found another solution
I've came across this too tryin' to remove the Virtual button at the bottom of my Android device. I'm using Xperia Arc, with Viper Xperia v4.5 ROM, after that the Virtual Button appear and I kept accidentally hittin' on it.
I have found a tweak that worked for me, try at your own risk.
1. File Explorer with root access (I'm using ES File Manager)
2. Locate build.prop located at system/ (system/build.prop)
3. It is recommended you make a backup copy of build.prop to your SD card (long press options>copy)
4. Long press build.prop and choose to open with a Text Editor or Note Editor (for me it was File Editor)
5. Scroll all the way down and enter this line at the bottom - qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
6. Save and reboot
Hope this helps some of you

hi guys,
Hope some one can tell me , how to create shorcuts like "Ok" and "StartMenu" on the keyboard.I think this feature would be very useful ,,, I am sure some body might be thinking about this already ?
And one more thing I heard is the American model touch pro At& T model has "ok" and startmenu keys on the keyboard, so if upgrade the uk model htc touch pro rom with AT & T rom , then will I be able to use the keyboard shortcuts ?
Expecting some answers from our pro colleagues....

For me can be better to unbind the home/back buttons from their default functionalities and handle them with AEBPlus. So I can have 4 functions on each button without their preinstalled functionalities.
I am not sure you can unbound home. Anybody tried?

I am sure, that someone will hack it. It is just a software. Earlier or later...
Yes Home will be really important so yuo have a better use of the phone with a single-hand. Hope someone will fix this topic!
any more suggestions here with regards to home and OK buttons on KEyboard ?
Thought I will bump this , so that some one can answer to this really!
I'm using PQzII to map Ctrl+Enter → OK. You can also setup keyboard shortcuts for Start, Today, Alt+Tab, etc.

This remap the keyboard AND buttons or only the keyboard?

Thank you for the tip , I will try this and then I will report back.
PQzII it's a wonderful app, works nicely!
Thanks!
nice app, i will try this out as well
I realize that configuring PQzII might not be very obvious, so here's some hints on how I've set it up for myself:
Run PQzII_Setup.exe to open the options.
Set CTRL as CTRL. I want to use my FN key as ALT, so enter the key code 0xEC for ALT since there is no actual choice for FN (more info below):
Now I can use FN+[key] mappings to simulate a regular PC.
FN+S → Start menu
FN+D → Desktop/Today screen
FN+Tab → Alt+Tab to switch programs
PQzII doesn't list all available keys (such as FN) but you can use PQz_CHECK to figure out the keycode and then manually enter it into PQzII if it isn't listed. For example, the SYM key is 0xE6. Just be sure to exit PQzII before you run PQz_CHECK:
http://www.nicque.com/PQz/PQz_CHECK.htm
Note: there's some inconsistency in how the TPro and PQzII handle sticky keys differently, so you might have to press some keys twice. Also, it goes without saying that you might get problems if you map shortcuts that already have functions, like FN+W → £.
Hope that helps
Edit--
After some testing, it might not be such a good idea to use the FN key for mapping because the Raphael uses it as a double-sticky key (ie: press FN once for one symbol, press FN twice for FN-lock). Since PQzII treats function keys as single-sticky keys, it gets pretty buggy.
Thank you & one more request
I have also tried this software and I must say , this is a must app for every Touch Pro Users , you can literally run anything with this software.
Only one more hurdle left for me with htc touch pro, when I am using any 3rd party RDP clients like citrix ica client, input is not taking from the keyboard, its only accepting it from virtual keyboard, there is one more thread already opened for this. Hope someone can crack this one fianl issue for touch pro.
Thanks to all the users who suggested this app.
Crosslinkage
Although the current result of my little research project is limited to being able to define a different keycode for the back button for _every window class_, perhaps with some more work it could lead to actually being able to remap the back button properly.
The home button can be (slightly) tweaked using post messages as well, but more work is required.
See my post here:

remap "back" button in IE?
It's not perfectly matching the topic but I don't want to start a new thread since it also somehow matches the topic:
Does anyone know if it's possible to map the "back" hardware-key in PocketIE as "history back"? In Pocket Outlook for example you can use the back-button to return from an email to the folder list but in PIE if you hit the back-button you just minimize PIE.
Problem with install.
When i install the app to my Touch pro, i can see the icon, but when i launch the app, all it does is show a small white square next to the "START" (top left)
I have uninstalled itn and re-installed but with no success.
Any ideas guys

tap on the small white square, select "Setup" in Kontext.
Or run the setup application located in Mein Gerät (my device) - Programme (programs) - PQzII - PQzII_Setup
How can i make PQzII launch 2nd today?
I can't seem to make it find the program.
EDIT:
Copy the .ink to somewhere within my documents (I used templates nice and out of the way)
Then add a shortcut to a program select view all files and find the shortcut.
Installed and couldn't get the app started. In fact it kinda hanged my Touch Pro.
So it would be better if it works with Fn , cuz we all use it more than any key ...
nobody suggest it to the programmer ?
Hi everyone,
I pulled the Browser.apk off my phone because I want to do a simple edit to the menu. I opened up the .apk to take a look and saw the xml files. That made me think what I wanted to do would be easy. NOT !
All I'm wanting to do it take the menu and change the useless "Goto URL" menu button and change it to a "Home" button. Since all you have to do is start typing to go to any URL, that button is sitting there wasting space and could be put to better use (at least for me).
Would that be possible?
Can someone tell me how to start?
Thanks.
Well if there were no physical keyboard (magic) there's no way to go to a web page besides that button. I suggest, if you ever plan on updating to 1.5 or any future build with a soft keyboard, then you should leave it like it is.
BTW the xml files are compiled somehow.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=479019
if you want to change the function of some button, you'll have to change the source and compile yourself.
Thanks everyone.
This looks like a good exercise that will help me learn a bit.
I might give it a try (keeping the original for future upgrades).
Thanks again. Now I'm off to figure out the first steps
I am currently working on some kernel hacks with the keyboard files to allow for some more goodies, I have to do it in-between classes, but I am getting somewhere.
Also anyone who knows how to modify API level KeyEvent changes get in touch with me. I am looking into creating my own ENDCALL implementation to only work while(in-phone) but my app is lacking. I think I will have to modify the actual Phone.apk to hang-up on keypress 107 event id.
**now included in some roms**
*thanks for the #include devs*
This only works if you have root and clockworkmod recovery installed see the stickys in the EPIC 4G DEVELOPMENT to get them first.
I, like a lot of people, got sick of the SMILEY button. I also barely use the search button on the bottom of the screen,
so I decided to change them and make them more useful.
edit: according to Geniusdog254 this will need to be reapplied after a rom update, unless it is included in the rom.
DEVS: please feel free to include this or at least a link to this post when updating your roms.
**changed mod method to clockworkmod recovery**
I have had several friends and members ask me how to do this... (they also asked for it to be made dummy proof)
I hope I have succeeded.
FOR NOOBS:
To Enable tweaks
1: download the attachments -
for only smiley to @ tweak
for only search to endcall tweak
2. install through clockworkmod recovery
option 1. use the clockworkmod rom manager to select file and flash
option 2. boot into clockworkmod recovery and select "install zip from sdcard" > "choose zip from sdcard" > then navigate to zip and install
To Disable tweaks (ie: go back to regular keyboard layout)
1: download the attachments -
for only smiley to @ tweak
for only search to endcall tweak
2. install through clockworkmod recovery ( clockworkmod < 3.0.0 only, I haven't had time to learn the edify scripting developers feel free to make it if you want to include it)
option 1. use the clockworkmod rom manager to select file and flash
option 2. boot into clockworkmod recovery and select "install zip from sdcard" > "choose zip from sdcard" > then navigate to zip and install
FOR SKILLED USERS:
1. Just download the zip file
2. use ClockworkMod recovery to install the zip files above
or
download, extract, flash the ones of your choosing from here
FOR DEVS and/or SKILLED USERS:
the changes are simple
I got the information from http://pdk.android.com/online-pdk/guide/keymaps_keyboard_input.html...
To make your own keyboard layouts just edit the .kl files in a notepad (gedit or notepad++ choose your flavor) then push them back to /system/usr/keylayout
- for search hack (melfas-touchkey.kl) - key 107 SEARCH WAKE_DROPPED -> key 107 ENDCALL WAKE - then save.
changes:
-for AT/Smiley hack (s3c-keypad.kl) - key 42 SMILEY WAKE_DROPPED -> key 42 AT WAKE_DROPPED - then save.
'SEARCH' Button on the bottom will end calls and put screen to sleep while not in a call
this only affects the capacitive search button on the bottom (the bottom 4 on the main screen)
the hardware search button on the qwerty keyboard is still mapped to search
' - smiley' button on qwerty keyboard is now the '@' symbol... (I have no idea why this wasn't stock to begin with)
**edit**
added attachments for only smiley and only search button hacks
**edit**
changed install method to *.zip for clockworkmod recovery
**edit 2.27.2010**
included specific changes
Wow awesome!
I was pretty excited for the smiley button, but honestly have NEVER used it since I don't like the faces.
I actually use the Search button pretty frequently, so could you put up a separate hack for JUST the smiley/@ button?
Wait, does the search button hack only apply to hardware keyboard or to the capacitive search button also?

This is old news
I had the first post with it back in the good ole days in the G1 section lmao. My Search2Play app on the Market actually does this, but it remaps search to play/pause music. I really need to update it for the Epic & other SGS devices lol
Anyway, I was going to change the smiley to @ myself the other day but never got around to it. Kudos!
EDIT: Also, it WILL change between ROMs. They (almost) always wipe /system in the update script and then flash back, and even if they don't they always contain these files for safety. Not a big deal, but you will have to change it again after a ROM change

COOL...
I went from a G1 to an epic 4g,
Was hard to leave cyanogen and all the G1 greatness...
I didn't know that your tool worked for the capacative search button only, I tried it and it changed both of them.
Cant wait to see your updated app and stop using this crude workaround....

My app actually does the exact same thing your doing, replacing the *.kl file with one that has the buttons remapped. It's just packaged up into a nice shiny little box
Also, it works for all types of buttons, but on capacitive buttons it doesn't work when the screen is turned off.
thanks again.

PS.
Isn't the purpose of open source code reuse....
Love your kernel can't wait for the update tomorrow night. I do a lot of personal development on my phone would love to test things for you from time to time.

Of course thats the point of open source lol. I wasn't criticizing you at all if that's what it sounded like, its great you figured that out for yourself. People like you & I who experiment with our phones until we make them work how we want are what makes the world go round lol
Just applied the button hack!
Both work perfectly! The capacitive search remap is really useful! Love it!
Sorry, having trouble installing...I have my phone rooted and busybox, but I'm getting what I think is an error message.
It says- 'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file
Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

For some reason the bat file doesn't connect to ADB.
You have to throw all the files in your TOOLS folder within your c:/android folder or where ever your ADB.exe file is.
It should run fine after that.

now it can be done on the phone without a computer for easy reinstall with roms
Thanks so much! I was so stoked to see this post when I woke up, and can report the @ tweak under clockwork works like a charm. It's crazy how much work it's taken to get this phone back to the same level of usability as my OG Droid, but between this and the lockscreen hack, I'm the closest I can be now until we have froyo. Cheers!
this is great, but could you please create a version that lets you remap the long press of the search button to something like vlingo?
Does it require a long press of the search button to sleep the phone or hang up? I'm afraid of it being to easy to hit the search button and have it hang up or close phone when you didn't want it to.
For this release the longpress is still mapped to voicesearch
I can remap it if really necessary

Hello all im new to making custom ROM's. I have nearly finished my G1 (HTC Dream) project and have hit a small bump. I would like to know which xml in which apk holds the default settings information, such as USB debugging enabled/disabled and other settings, when the ROM is installed for the first time.
Also I have ADWLauncher installed by default and was wondering, when I press the menu button I get a mini menu at the bottom of the screen, one of those options is 'Search' but i have removed this app from my default installed apps and thus it does not work, where is the xml for this aswell please.
Thankyou very much.
I really need help with this been running around google and found some people with the same question and thay also got no answer, Some one please answer thanx
Hello guys this is my first time to post here I need some help and I believe you guys have the enough skills and experience to help me out.
I downloaded this app called Back button - everywhere from the playstore
It's working fine and everything but I was wondering if someone could increase the size of the box "button" or maybe edit the dimensions so it becomes a bit more like a rectangle button or something..
The thing is I'm not using this app for the same thing it was made for, I'm only using it to hide a specific part of my phone screen just to avoid touching that part. So yeah if you guys have an alternative to it I'd appreciate that I have been trying to find anything similar but unfortunately I couldn't, most likely it's the only app that fits my need. I can set it to "do nothing when clicked" also the transparent background is what I love about so yeah
In the photo these are the options I can edit the size but it's limited to that particular area (red box)
Could someone help just make that box a little more bigger? That's all I need thank you
Edit : double it's size horizontally would be perfect. Like.. two boxes next to each other that's the size I need thank you
An app named "Back button - everywhere" isn't available on Google Play Store. But 2 apps named "Back button - anywhere". What the app you really refer to?
