Hi everyone,
I pulled the Browser.apk off my phone because I want to do a simple edit to the menu. I opened up the .apk to take a look and saw the xml files. That made me think what I wanted to do would be easy. NOT !
All I'm wanting to do it take the menu and change the useless "Goto URL" menu button and change it to a "Home" button. Since all you have to do is start typing to go to any URL, that button is sitting there wasting space and could be put to better use (at least for me).
Would that be possible?
Can someone tell me how to start?
Thanks.
Well if there were no physical keyboard (magic) there's no way to go to a web page besides that button. I suggest, if you ever plan on updating to 1.5 or any future build with a soft keyboard, then you should leave it like it is.
BTW the xml files are compiled somehow.

if you want to change the function of some button, you'll have to change the source and compile yourself.
Thanks everyone.
This looks like a good exercise that will help me learn a bit.
I might give it a try (keeping the original for future upgrades).
Thanks again. Now I'm off to figure out the first steps

To all the guru's here, how can I get a home icon on the top bar. This way I can tap on it and go to the today screen. I know about wisbar, but don't want to use it for personal reasons. I know I can create a shortcut for a key using quickmenu and a gester using wktask but I just want a simple home icon (like wisbar or WA) in the top bar. Anyone have any ideas please?
Well, i don't know about the home icon, but maybe you'll find vjTodayButton useful:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=243235&highlight=todaybutton
You map it to a hardware button. Now, when you press (and hold) this button, you see the Today screen. When you release it, you are returned to the app you were previously in - IMO much more useful than anything that takes you to the home screen aln leaves you there...
Not quite what I need. If the icon is in the today bar, then it is available in any program I run. This allows me to switch to the today screen with only on tap. When I am finished then I can click on the wktask name/icon header to get back to where I was. I know I'm being a little ridiculous with this, but for speed and ease, this is the best option for me.
I know someone has to have an idea. This forum is to large and great for only one person to try and help out.
Well, maybe try editing your first post and use a bit more descriptive topic subject.
Messages titled with some nondescriptive name like "Need some assistance...", "help needed", "can i do this?", etc... often get ignored... It's really hard to check every single such message to often find out that they concern something you have no idea about.
But something like "How to put a shortcut in the top menubar" might just catch the eye of someone who actually knows the answer...
Just as the point 2 of the rules says:

While you're at it, take your time to read trough them - they're not here because the admin was bored and decided to write something - their goal is to make forum browsing a bit easier - really.

I am using iLauncher from SBSH, this gives you what you want, at a price though.
I have a Fuze, so I lack these buttons by default. I was wondering if I should try to get them, but I don't know what they do yet to consider it.
what a crazy question?
Do you know what they do on a standard keyboard ,thats connected to your PC? The CTRL and TAB buttons on the standard PC keyboard do the same thing as on the PPC
Well, thats still not good enough.
I mean what good is a CTRL button on a phone? What can I do with a CTRL button on my phone? Turn on italics that doesn't exist?
What about tab? Does that let me go back and forth from clickable links? That'd be pretty useful. Does SHIFT+TAB work?
What about a keyboard button or two that lets me use the soft keys on-screen? The tilt had these, and this phone has a ton of useless buttons. Do any of these do that? Or maybe any of these you guys usually remapp for that? Can I remapp to that?
copy, cut paste comes to mind
exactly along with undo, save and open
if you don want them and dont have them whats the point of the thread?
Rory
Whats the point of this thread?
Are we ignoring the questions about TAB and focusing on the CTRL button? So I don't type up word documents or e-mail on my phone - suddenly I'm being attacked? Jesus calm down. I asked a simple question - I didn't see the need to copy and paste in text messages and you guys want to murder me for it.
alt+tab is a shortcut for windows Pc,but not for PPC...however,you can use a small software to switch window by alt+tab..
Well what about shift tab, which tabs links up instead of down? Does that work?
tab and hold for copy paste dont work in all apps
but in most cases using ctrl c/v works using the small onscreen keyboard
this is usefull one one need to copy something out of textbox like a phonenr or something like that
tab is useful if one is using a program where one have to fill various fields with data
and tab then moves the focus around between the input fields
shift is useful if one wish to make capitol letters
so the real answer is that keys functionality and usefulness is the same as they
are on normal computer keyboards
ctrl+a is very useful, selects all text or files.
Alright. So theoretically, how does this keyboard layout sound. (On the Fuze)
Caps - Changed to Tab
OK - Changed to CTRL
- (+) - Changed to OK (where it belongs.)
I would like to change more, maybe try and get softbuttons on, say, the left and right buttons. And the bottom left area is full of useless shortcuts to me, but I don't know what else to change them to.
AND DOES SHIFT + TAB WORK LIKE ON A COMPUTER?
I know the background of the start menu can be changed by:
1) changing the phones wallpaper like normal
OR
2) replacing the startmenu_background_screen_"resolution".png from within the windows folder.
The second is only if you want a different wallpaper in your start menu to the rest of your phone. (the default file is just a transparent .png which shows your normal wallpaper underneath)
I know you can also change the folder icons, by changing around other png files in the window folder.
My question is how can you change the font style or more importantly the colour?
Also, is it possible to change it so it resembles the wm6.1 start menu instead of the honeycomb?
(please dont say "just use a 6.1 ROM" because i dont want to. lol. I like wm6.5 as its quicker and more finger friendly, i just want the old start menu back)
no one know how to do these things?
anyone?
PLEASE?
im desperate here
lolz
As much or as little as you wish.
Have a look at some of the stuff I posted in here :-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=504320
Should answer a few of the basics.
Thanks for your reply, but those replies are about the today screen. I dont even use titanium any more. I find M2D more useful.
What i want to know is how to edit the Start menu.
the list of programs shown as hexagon icons
I want to change it to like how it was on wm6.1.
Just a grid of icons with words on a white background
OK, I have got what you are after... sounds like a registry hack somewhere....
Unfortunately the holiday(UK)/vacation(US), season is upon us, and I may not have found the solution for a week or two. If and when I do, I'll post it here and send you a PM.
Thank you.
Its appreciated

I second this question. And what I want is better not the 'grid view'.
Better we have a registry tweak way, so that we can make a HoneyComb Toggle.
In some cases when I want more RAM, it's better to shutdown the honeycomb and the titanium today plugin.
So another question is do we have a tool to toggle the titanium? Like we can do to M2D? I know we can do it through today settings, but I'm looking for a way like regitweak or mortscript, so that I can use a shortcut to map it to a hardware button, do it within one touch.
[Edit: Got some sence for the half of first question from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=509160&highlight=start+menu
Seems the WM6.5 honeycomb start menu is an executable called shell32.exe. If so we can shut it down with a powerful task manager like DotFred's TaskMgr.exe or let it show up in the htc task manager by registry tweak and kill it. Will report it back after I test it next week. Or anybody can test it right now?
But the first question still need an answer.
Edit3: So what is the process or service of the WM6.1 start menu ? (for that I think it's not an exe) This may help to answer the question of how to resemble old start menu back.
And then what is titanium? An exe, a process or a service? Got a name?]
Thanks for any help.
there isnt!
there isnt a way to back to 6.1 start menu...
but you can use the Qucik menu that is a lil same... but you need to leave blank the cpr file for grid scene on your windows folder... then use the Quick menu that Utaker post on devs and hack forum just search with this exact words " Quickmenu instead honeycomb" you may get all the answer you need there... Oh and the honey comb can be modded in maaaany ways just search all over the devs a nd hack sections
thanks bye.
If this is the wrong section, let me know please.
I see a lot of themes or people SS's of their home screen and, the Start button at the top, i see a lot of people have custom names there, like in Laskar's theme and etc. i was wondering how it's possible to put a custom name there... Like... Susa instead of Start, or something along those lines
i would also like to see this possible
Well, i still don't know how to do it, but the new co0kies 1.7 has an option for it now, so all's well

I thought it was only your service provider details that CHT would change, not the txt next to the start button?
I'm still after customizing the start txt if any one can help...
There's two ways that I know of..........
Either look here. Needs a bit of knowledge to do that, tried a few times but couldn't get the dll to re-sign correctly and gave up in the end.
Or.......the cheating option which I use.
Install the "No Start" patch attached (WWE only), no idea who wrote it originally so can't credit them, but it came off here somewhere.
Then in Photoshop add whatever you want to replace it with, this has the advantage that you can use whatever font/image/colour you want rather than just sticking to white text in your system font if you do it the proper way.
To align in Photoshop, take a screenshot to show your start icon with no text, then overlay it with some transparency onto your new wallpaper then you can see perfectly where you need to paste your new text/icon or whatever.
Hope this helps.

Thanks! Sneaky, but I like it! Will give it a go!
Must admit, I'm a bit surprised no one has come up with a editor yet
Hi All,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I have had a search around for the correct forum to post this in - sorry if it is the wrong one...
I have recently bought a Zenithink ZT-280 c91 for my Nan to get her on the internet, I am trying to simplify it as much as possible and have come across a problem that no amount of googling has seemed to clear up.
The pad has 4 hardware buttons (Options, Home, Back and Search), however as it has ICS on it, it also have the ICS virtual buttons.
I want to remove these virtual buttons but keep the task bar if possible, having 2 sets of buttons is likely to confuse the old dear.
All threads ive seen so far relate to disabling the hardware buttons but keeping the on screen ones? The task bar is useful and id like to keep it (or if there is an alternative option then that would be great if i can just scrap the buttons!).
I have tried replacing the home launcher - this hasnt done anything so far!
Any help would be greatly appreciated
goto settings >> launcher>>home screen>>there will be settings for that
else use other launcher such as adw,ss,360 launcher..
There are no settings for disabling the buttons, adding a new launcher doesnt make a difference, the buttons remain?
I found instructions on how to enable the virtual buttons on any ROM. From what I can see it should just be a case of using the word "false" instead of "true".
http://goo.gl/VAKqU
Good luck
I did see that one but was hoping there was something even simpler - guess ill have to bite the bullet and give it a shot if not - thanks
there is a youtube vid for this.. haven't tried it yet though
link since I can't get the YT link to work
I would like to thank you guys..
I was going to ask this question but found fortunately it already asked and answered..
Found another solution
I've came across this too tryin' to remove the Virtual button at the bottom of my Android device. I'm using Xperia Arc, with Viper Xperia v4.5 ROM, after that the Virtual Button appear and I kept accidentally hittin' on it.
I have found a tweak that worked for me, try at your own risk.
1. File Explorer with root access (I'm using ES File Manager)
2. Locate build.prop located at system/ (system/build.prop)
3. It is recommended you make a backup copy of build.prop to your SD card (long press options>copy)
4. Long press build.prop and choose to open with a Text Editor or Note Editor (for me it was File Editor)
5. Scroll all the way down and enter this line at the bottom - qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
6. Save and reboot
Hope this helps some of you
