I'll be travelling from Los Angeles to Italy and France in the near future. Any tips for an affordable option for maintaining connectivity on my G2x during that time? I don't need voice, just data.
Googling around I found $50+ cards that I can buy and have shipped here, but was hoping someone here had first hand experience and could give me some tips. Thanks!
Buy a SIM card when you get there from a local shop.
Just stay away from the shops right near the airport, they're always a ripoff.

I don't have an answer for you, but I give it a bump because I will be travelling that way in June and would love to hear of a good internet source for this!
Make sure your phone is unlocked of course

What would a decent price be (just to level set so I don't get ripped off)?

Dunno about France; in the UK a Pay as you go SIM on 3 is £1, plus a top up of £15 for a month's unlimited data, 300 minutes and around 3000 texts. It comes with around 140mb before top-up. Its what I use in my G2x

Great! So in UK the pricing was about:
£1 - for the card itself
£15 - for unlimited data/300 minutes/3000 texts
That's not bad!

I'll be in the UK for about a 6 weeks this summer and was looking at 3 because it seemed like their prices are the best. How are the data speeds for you? And is data capped/throttled, or is it truly unlimited?
If you've got a TMo phone you can do internet calling for free. I don't think the g2x has a radio compatible with 3g/4g in Europe.

Usually about 3mbps in certain areas, data throttling at peak times, too. Sorry - I've been away from the forum for a while.
Thanks! I've been here for a few weeks now. 3 has been great! Had Vodafone for a week, they were terrible. Didn't seem to work well with my phone, the APNs kept disappearing so data wouldn't work. Plus you only get 50 mb per day if you're pay as you go.

The G2x definitely is compatible with 3g/4g in Europe. I've personally used it in the Netherlands, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

I should probably change my sig to reflect this; I'm in the UK and I use a G2X. I did get some slight data issues with non 1800Mhz telcos, but that was more than likely down to using 4.0.4 betas all the time. Back to Bionix as my daily driver and it has been fine - I work for an MVNO so I have access to SIMs for all main UK networks to test.

Hello,
We are traveling to Spain. Will be in Barcelona and then the Andalusia region. Will I have data access in these areas? What companies provide a SIM card I can use on my unlocked ATT phone?
Do you know how much they generally cost, and what sort of plans are offered?
Thank you for the help!
The main Carriers are MoviStar, Vodafone and Orange.
For 3G the best is Vodafone, about prices and roaming I think is the best you can get

I cant figure out how much they will cost for a 3g data package including voice.
Hows the coverage through Andalusia?

So Im in Jerez spain and everywhere I've been, every phone store says you can not buy a prepaid sim for data. I know they sell unlimited data sim cards that last 7 days for 29 euro. I see them all over the web, but the vodafone stores have no clue about this, they say only minutes! Maybe I need free gps program since I can not use google maps now. arg. Any suggestions??
thanks!
that depends.topons.com
you can have a look .maybe you can save more.
As a follow up:
I got a movifone sim from Corte Englis but could never get it activated right after over an hour I said screw it.
Then I got a YOIGO sim card from a mobile phone store. I think the store was actually Movifon. After spending 10 minutes telling me they dont make a simcard for data, I looked through the plan book and found one. They set up for me then. It was unlimited data, but I think it capped the speed after so much use. Because after a while of Google maps the speed got REALLY agonizingly slow. Then the next day it would be highspeed again.
It costs me like 15 Euro for 2 weeks.
i have a uk vodafone desire, its custom with aosp roms and us unlocked.
I am going to new York for a week and i need to get a pre pay sim, mainly just for data, i don't care about calls and texts as i just want access to email and Skype to call home.
I have looked at some of the sites, but i dont know which one to get, can anyone recommend one?
I have a truphone simcard here.
which i need to pay£10 to get the membership this will give me local rates in uk or usa no matter where i am then i can buy a USA number for £5 and then buy some credit maybe £10 may do.... so that's £25 about $50, so i guess thats the bench mark. The desire is quad band so should work over there.
Did you take your trip already?
Your UK Desire doesn't have any 3G bands for the USA, so you'll be stuck with 2G/EDGE. T-Mobile USA has a $1.49/day data pass that is "unlimited". They throttle after 30 MB daily usage, but the speed reduction only shows up in 3G mode. You won't get 3G so you won't notice. It'll just be slow all the time...
If you want faster than EDGE you'll need a separate device.
Missed it. As been already. Bought a samsung fakeberry while I was there. Expensed the topups. Was just for email, for 5days.
But thanks I will look at t. Mobile next time. I bought at&t..... they suck. With the new job I will be going NYC regularly.

Okay, well if you will be visiting the USA regularly, you may want to consider buying in the US a phone with T-Mobile US compatible 3G frequencies. Most of the T-Mo US phones also have UMTS 2100 for the UK, so you'll get 3G back home.
Be warned, T-Mo US is pretty choppy too, but you get a better deal for data than AT&T.
Another option as long as we're talking new hardware - you could buy a prepaid MiFi device from Virgin Mobile USA (CDMA carrier, runs on Sprint's network) and purchase data for that. Use the wifi on your phone to tap into that instead of data roaming; and you can also run your laptop/tablet/etc on it. It won't do you much good anywhere outside the USA, but for some this is a viable option.
Hi All
I am now due an upgrade on my Desire, and was going to go for the HTC One S. O2 however want £36 a month, for 600 minutes, 1gd data and unlimited texts, so i was wondering what people are paying for it over here?
Cheers
Go to the vodafone eforum and do it that way you get much better deals! Or just contact them through twitter just look for vodafone UK deals

Go to mobiles(.)co(.)uk, chose HTC One S -> T-Mobile -> Show All and you can find this deal:
Line Rental £26.00 monthly with cashback(7 Months Free) Includes 750MB data allowance , 300 Minutes , Unlimited Texts
Plus you can get an extra £60 cashback if you go to quidco(.)com, register, search for mobiles(.)co(.)uk, click on the link and complete your order.
All that will bring your average cost per month down to £15.92 with a free phone, 300 mins, unlimited texts and 750mb of data
phones4u is currently doing £27 24month contract on O2, 300mins, 500Mb data, also doing £26 24 month on vodafone 300mins, 500Mb data. But phone free, and SIM free, unbranded as I was told yesterday when I was in one of their shops playing around the one s. (oh yes, the deals only available online but I think that's better cos you have the 14days cooling period which in store you don't get it)
I am planning to get the o2 deal since always on o2 but just waiting to decide which colour to go for... just cannot decide...
i really need 1gb of data! i am going for the grey, just to get away from the black ones chipping whilst those phones are still in circulation!
Cheers all.
Three are by far the best. Just changed to them and their signal and 3G speed is great! When tethered to my PC using wifi and the three networks 3G on speed test I get 56ping, 8/9mb Download, 2.5mb upload.
The deal I went for was Unlimited Data, 1000mins, 5000 texts for £33 a month with £60 credit spread over 3rd and 4th bill.
3 have come a long way...
I used to hate them, They where horribly branded, and removing the simlock was almost impossible, compared to other networks.
But they are at the top for smartphone deals, The internet deals they offer + the speed is almost unbeatable.

I totally. I remmember their first proprietary handsets and they were nasty cheap plastic... Do you remember those £11 3 phones from Savers? The advertising used to get right on my nerves too, and the support was aweful. I came back to them in 2010 for the One Plan and haven't been more impressed with a carrier since.
Support is also top notch, never have to wait in a queue and like you say, the speeds are the best around...
I don't want to sound like I'm advertising them, but they really have turned a new leaf in terms of service and reliability.. As well as the fact they don't put their fugly logo on every phone I buy anymore
Have been with ThreeUK for 4 years, had to cancel my contract this month, as I moved to a new place and don't have any signal indoors what-so-ever. I also found their customer support very useless to help me solve my problem, but had no problems in past to get a good deal for upgrade.
Now I'm with T-mo and my phone arriving tomorrow

I'm on that tariff but I pay £32 a month as I've been an O2 customer a while so I got 1gb for the price of 500mb (£6). They also threw in 50mms messages a month. I also get 500 o2 to o2 minutes and since almost all of my friends and family are on o2 it works out well. If you've been with them a while give them a call and see what they say. 2 years ago I had a similar situation and I just asked and got 2 extras just like that (unlimited o2 to o2 calls and 500mb bolt on, both for free). If not that 3 deal that someone mentioned for £33 seems like a steal. Phone was free on o2 btw.

Wow thats shocking! I've only been with them 5 years and even then this is the most expensive tariff I've ever taken out with them...usually I was a SIM only customer (£15 a month). I go on their live chat thing and ask what are my options are and I usually get someone saying 'well since you've been with us a while' etc etc. Maybe try your luck and say you've been with them 12 years and you want this phone but that tariff is too expensive and competitors are cheaper and you may have to leave. They seem to value customers so could offer you a loyalty discount (and yes they do this cause my account has a bolt on thingy saying 'Loyalty Discount, -£4'). I have half a mine to ask them to knock another few ££ off for those 50mms messages cause they will NEVER get used lol.
If you have been with your provider for quite a while, then try and call their cancellation line and request your PAC code, they will offer you a really good deal just to keep you with them, but if you deny all their offers and go away with the PAC code, wait for another call... with the best deal possible
got pac code. no further calls. sod them! i've gone with the Three UK deal. 500 minutes, unlimited data and texts. £32 a month. O2 have disappointed me to say the least!
EDIT: Thanks for all your advice!
Why no one commented on the deal that I found?
Is it because of T-Mobile or 300 minutes is not enough?
I have never used T-Mo, so I'm curious a little bit now
I'm on Orange panther 31. As it suggests, £31 with 400 mins, unlimited texts and 750mb data though CPW. Also includes free sky sports on the phone and another one of those swappable things.
I also get 15% loyalty discount for staying with them so works out at £26 odd coupled with roaming data access to T-Mobile I'm very rarely without H connection.

whats this roaming data ?? How do you use tmobile when your with orange ?
Id like to know more about this, because with vodafone the 3g signal is non existent where i live, But tmobile have excellent 3g signal (my GF is with them)
Basically, if you're on Orange (my carrier) or T Mobile you can use either network for phone and data. Mine seems to spend more time on T Mobile than Orange but either way, coverage is great it automatically picks the best one I think.
You also can manually move to either via network selection if you prefer.
Plus orange do that loyalty discount too.

I personaly dont understand, why u all look for "carrier" phones with monthly payment...
Isnt there any "local" internet shops (similar to ebay/amazon) where you can buy? Here there is planty of them! Choose the one u like or the price u like and go ahead!
You can see some of search results here "http://www.salidzini.lv/search.php?q=htc+one" But ofc, these shops dont send outside Latvia, so its not option for thread author

Hi everyone
I bought my SGS 4G during my last US vacation.
Coming back to visit (10 days on August), I'd like to buy a prepaid SIM card with unlimited 3G/4G with a local line just for this stay.
I saw s SIM card for 50$ in the T-Mobile site.
How can I do that, if I'm not at the states at the moment?
What alternatives do I have?
I searched the web and couldn't find a clear, easy & cheap solution.
It has to work with my lovely SGS 4G.
Thanks in advance!

Your best bet is most likely gonna be to just get the plan once you arrive in the states. Tmob stores are all over the place so unless your flying into Podunk, Kentucky(no offense to people from the great state of Kentucky) you should be able to find a store within a few miles of the airport. Hope you figure it out and you have a blast in the States.
Just out of curiosity where will you be? Here in NYC t-mobile stores are everywhere & may be in the airport itself.

Hi guys
Last year in NYC 2 different AT&T stores didn't want to sell me a SIM card as I'm a tourist with no social security number. This year my starting point is Miami.

I would contact a store close to where you will be staying in Miami. Tell them whats going on and they will probably be more than happy to help you. Also Walmart sells T-mo stuff so they might be able to help you. IIRC you can save a tiny bit buying from walmart.
Another option is use the Straight Talk sim card program. Its five bucks cheaper and the same service. Im not totally sure of the data connection. Im looking into the type of data connection you get. I know Normal straight talk phones have the same coverage as att, verizon and t-mo. Ill update once I can get a straight answer.
Great, 10x, I'll make some research on the mobile stores around my staying area i.e south beach.

It would be best to wait until you're in the states. You will have no problem getting a prepaid SIM activated from T-Mobile (I am an Event Rep for them). I'm not sure if they offer it in Florida but if you don't really need many minutesthey offer unlimited 4g (throttled after 5gb) & messaging with 100 minutes for $30. I sell a lot of that plan during conventions here in Denver.

Talked to a Straight talk rep the byod sims operate 3g service. So if the T-Mo $30 plan doesnt have enough minutes for ya that is a option.
Hi eb13
That plan sounds like just what I need. Is it limited to a period of time? I found a T-mo store in Miami but it has low ratings.. and probably they won't offer this plan. I'll try contacting them on Monday.
Thanks.

Hi Again
OK, so regarding the T-mobile 30$ plan I found this on T-mo site :
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans
and this one on Wallmart site :
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tmobile-30-Wireless-Airtime-Card/15443357?findingMethod=rr#ProductDetail
Few things still unclear to me :
1. If I buy it from T-mo, do I have to do it in advance and ask for delivery to the hotel or can I just instantly go and buy it from a local T-mo store I found 15 minutes walk from the Hotel ?
maybe I should order it online and just go pick it up from that store ?
2. Why do all stores in Miami get lousy reviews with "bad customer service", "no parking" and "no one speaks English there" ?
3. Wallmart centers are not near my staying place, so I could order it and get it shipped to the hotel I suppose, but here it says :
"The $30 Unlimited Web & Text with 100 min talk plan works only with T-Mobile Phones purchased from a Walmart store or from Walmart.com"
WTF ? I bought my phone in some local Manhattan store I don't even remember its name.
4. Even in Wallmart site I see I get the activation code via mail - but how would they know my IMEI number?
Regarding the Straight-Talk plans I found this one :
http://www.straighttalksim.com/shop.php
So what I understand from this is that it will cost me 60$ overall (which is twice the T-mo price).
I don't really need the unlimited talk, but mabe it's worth the price comparing to T-mobile service.
What do you advise ?
Thanks !!!
The $30 plan is suppose to be part of the byod(bring your own device) promotion so walmart should be willing to sell you the sim card. I would goto my local walmart and ask but I know each store will do things slightly different.
You also might be able to contact t-mobile and tell them what your wanting to do and ask what they suggest. They might be able to have the item shipped to the hotel in advance of your arrival and you pick it up at the desk when you sign in. What you are getting from them is the sim card it costs like 4 bucks and they refund that to you once you activate.
If you dont need the unlimited calling then I would stick to t-mo. In Miami area the 4g service should be super.

1. No you do not need to buy in advance. You can walk into any Tmo store and buy prepaid activation on site. Choose to activate yourself by phone and the $30 option is available to anyone who activate by phone.
2. Because people are jerks
3. disregard that, I sell these plans to people on a daily basis at numerous locations and in any phone. I have activated these for customers with unlocked iphones (not proud of that).
4. You provide your IMEI when activating buy it's only to make sure you're not going to use a phone that's been reported stolen from retail. (if a phone is stolen from a retail location the IMEI guess into a database)
I highly advise staying away from Straight Talk - just my opinion but there service on every level is less than respectable.

Hi everyone,
Excuse me for bringing back this topic, but I have a similar question regarding this topic. We're visiting California next week as an European tourist. I'm willing to buy the 30 days unlimited web prepaid deal from t mobile, however I saw that it is for 'US residents only'.
Do they check this? Do you have to provide a passport or something?
We only need Internet for 3 weeks so 30 days is sufficient, it's mainly for navigation purpose on my HTC Sensation.
Another question, is the sim a standard one or is it a micro sim?
Hope you can give us the answer! Can't wait for our visit!
Best regards,
Jasper from the Netherlands.

No they do not check it. You do not need to provide a passport. However you may be required to present an ID. It varies. If you plan to get one at a T-Mobile store, you can request a standard one, or microsim. If for some reason you decide to buy it online, it'll come as a standard similar card.

So I currently have Verizon. I saw that T-Mobile has a way to get me out of my contract (pay my ETF). However, I've heard that T-Mobile isn't that good, so I've come here to ask anyone who has T-Mobile and the Nexus 5... How is their service? How is the phone? Is it worth switching to T-Mobile for the Nexus 5 vs keeping my Verizon Moto X.

if youre in a city, or around one, tmobile is awesome. if you live in the country, its a different story. service is great here in nyc, the fastest lte speeds from any provider here. its much less expensive than verizon, and completely unlimited high speed data speeds. oh, and the nexus 5 is awesome
T-Mobile is great in the city, but kind of sucks in the country.

if youre in a city, or around one, tmobile is awesome. if you live in the country, its a different story. service is great here in nyc, the fastest lte speeds from any provider here. its much less expensive than verizon, and completely unlimited high speed data speeds. oh, and the nexus 5 is awesome

I live in more of a suburb type thing. I'm in florida but on the coverage map around where I am, it doesn't drop below Good so I'm thinking I might do it tommorow.
I'm definitely not in the country. I'm about an hour away from Tampa so use that as a general location.

I've been getting on average about 18 Mbps here in Midtown. Is that faster than the others?

That's a lot faster than what I get. Did you change anything on the phone?

no, not at all. the nexus 5 is, btw, the only phone ive had that ive not changed anything to do with the radio and data speed. i bet its just less people using the network around me than around you.

Yeah, that makes sense.
You guys wouldn't happen to have any clue as to the trade-in credit would you? I have a VZW GS4 and a Moto X Dev to trade for T-Mobile for the "get out of my contract" thing, and I can most likely get $0 down on the Nexus', but I want to put forward atleast $200 on each phone in advance with the trade in credit. I mean these phones are not even a month old, and they are in mint condition so could anyone knowledgeable give me a rough estimate of what I should expect? it goes up to $300 apparently, and I should get that or over $200 for the Galaxy, but even if I only get 200 for the moto, I'd still be happy.

They offered me about 60% of the Swappa price for my year-old SIII.

Ah okay because I've got a Galaxy S4 and a Moto X Dev Edition. They are in perfect condition (cases since day one), and I haven't even owned them for 30 days so hopefully I'll atleast get 200 each.
Honestly I'm just switching to Verizon because they don't have the Nexus 5. The monthly price decrease is just a perk.
You should know that tmoblie only offers the 16gb version. I have tmoblie and got my N5 from gplay cuz I want 32gb. I live in central va. I drive all over alllll over. In cities and urban areas like Richmond, Baltimore and DC I get LTE 30 plus. Surrounding suburbs are the same. In places like boweling green, south hill I get G and E. I also visit family in pasco Fl and the Boone's Vt. In FL it's 30 plus. In Vt , new Hampshire no service at all.
P.S all I needed down was 60 bucks

Well I live in Pasco so thats good xD I would buy it from GPlay, but unfortunately the terms of the switch plan for them to pay the ETF is to get a phone they have, thus I have to get the 16GB. but doesnt the Meenova SD card reader work with the N5?
I'm not one to complain about the size of the phone though either way because I only put a few albums and a few apps.
I get around 32 at Hudson beach area. At the island I was get around 16 but that's almost 3 miles off the coast.

check there website for better info
Well as far as coverage goes it looks good. Also, you can get the phone's unlocked after 90 days of service as long as your in good standing and your device is paid in full right? I mean just in case, I would like to know. I couldn't find much info on their website about this, and I've gotten mixed answers from the local stores I've called. One guy said they are locked to tmobile, another said 90 days, and on google i found a site that said 40 days.

I just did exactly that.
T-mobile is hit and miss. It really depends on where you live.
It works GREAT where I live.As long as I stay out of the hills (i'm guessing, haven't had to go up there since I switched over) I'd say T-Mobile's coverage is actually better than VZW here.
We got $100 for each of our S3's (16GB) and like $46 for my daughter's like 4 month old iphone 4.
My store told me they'd unlock after 90 days of good payment history if you call and ask.
And BTW, they have an estimator on their website you can use.

but the nexus 5 is already unlocked, no need for them to unlock it. you can buy it from tmobile and use it on att if you want, or on sprint.

Yeah but the estimator gives me some unwanted prices. I did talk to a rep and they said the price can go up depending on the condition but in any case, I'm going to get the Nexus 5. As far as the Nexus 5 being unlocked, is that true? I mean I could literally buy it from T-Mobile and if i dont like the service i can pay it off quick and just go to straight talk?
