How can I buy a T-Mobile prepaid SIM card for my US vacation? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hi everyone
I bought my SGS 4G during my last US vacation.
Coming back to visit (10 days on August), I'd like to buy a prepaid SIM card with unlimited 3G/4G with a local line just for this stay.
I saw s SIM card for 50$ in the T-Mobile site.
How can I do that, if I'm not at the states at the moment?
What alternatives do I have?
I searched the web and couldn't find a clear, easy & cheap solution.
It has to work with my lovely SGS 4G.
Thanks in advance!

Your best bet is most likely gonna be to just get the plan once you arrive in the states. Tmob stores are all over the place so unless your flying into Podunk, Kentucky(no offense to people from the great state of Kentucky) you should be able to find a store within a few miles of the airport. Hope you figure it out and you have a blast in the States.

Just out of curiosity where will you be? Here in NYC t-mobile stores are everywhere & may be in the airport itself.

Hi guys
Last year in NYC 2 different AT&T stores didn't want to sell me a SIM card as I'm a tourist with no social security number. This year my starting point is Miami.

I would contact a store close to where you will be staying in Miami. Tell them whats going on and they will probably be more than happy to help you. Also Walmart sells T-mo stuff so they might be able to help you. IIRC you can save a tiny bit buying from walmart.
Another option is use the Straight Talk sim card program. Its five bucks cheaper and the same service. Im not totally sure of the data connection. Im looking into the type of data connection you get. I know Normal straight talk phones have the same coverage as att, verizon and t-mo. Ill update once I can get a straight answer.

Great, 10x, I'll make some research on the mobile stores around my staying area i.e south beach.

It would be best to wait until you're in the states. You will have no problem getting a prepaid SIM activated from T-Mobile (I am an Event Rep for them). I'm not sure if they offer it in Florida but if you don't really need many minutesthey offer unlimited 4g (throttled after 5gb) & messaging with 100 minutes for $30. I sell a lot of that plan during conventions here in Denver.

Talked to a Straight talk rep the byod sims operate 3g service. So if the T-Mo $30 plan doesnt have enough minutes for ya that is a option.

Hi eb13
That plan sounds like just what I need. Is it limited to a period of time? I found a T-mo store in Miami but it has low ratings.. and probably they won't offer this plan. I'll try contacting them on Monday.
Thanks.

The t-mo 30 dollar plan is good for 30 days.
This from the t-mo site.
*First 5GB at up to 4G speeds. New activations only. Available exclusively in-store at Walmart, on Walmart.com, and T-Mobile.com.

I would goto walmart and get it. Normally they are slightly cheaper.

Hi Again
OK, so regarding the T-mobile 30$ plan I found this on T-mo site :
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans
and this one on Wallmart site :
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tmobile-30-Wireless-Airtime-Card/15443357?findingMethod=rr#ProductDetail
Few things still unclear to me :
1. If I buy it from T-mo, do I have to do it in advance and ask for delivery to the hotel or can I just instantly go and buy it from a local T-mo store I found 15 minutes walk from the Hotel ?
maybe I should order it online and just go pick it up from that store ?
2. Why do all stores in Miami get lousy reviews with "bad customer service", "no parking" and "no one speaks English there" ?
3. Wallmart centers are not near my staying place, so I could order it and get it shipped to the hotel I suppose, but here it says :
"The $30 Unlimited Web & Text with 100 min talk plan works only with T-Mobile Phones purchased from a Walmart store or from Walmart.com"
WTF ? I bought my phone in some local Manhattan store I don't even remember its name.
4. Even in Wallmart site I see I get the activation code via mail - but how would they know my IMEI number?
Regarding the Straight-Talk plans I found this one :
http://www.straighttalksim.com/shop.php
So what I understand from this is that it will cost me 60$ overall (which is twice the T-mo price).
I don't really need the unlimited talk, but mabe it's worth the price comparing to T-mobile service.
What do you advise ?
Thanks !!!

The $30 plan is suppose to be part of the byod(bring your own device) promotion so walmart should be willing to sell you the sim card. I would goto my local walmart and ask but I know each store will do things slightly different.
You also might be able to contact t-mobile and tell them what your wanting to do and ask what they suggest. They might be able to have the item shipped to the hotel in advance of your arrival and you pick it up at the desk when you sign in. What you are getting from them is the sim card it costs like 4 bucks and they refund that to you once you activate.
If you dont need the unlimited calling then I would stick to t-mo. In Miami area the 4g service should be super.

1. No you do not need to buy in advance. You can walk into any Tmo store and buy prepaid activation on site. Choose to activate yourself by phone and the $30 option is available to anyone who activate by phone.
2. Because people are jerks
3. disregard that, I sell these plans to people on a daily basis at numerous locations and in any phone. I have activated these for customers with unlocked iphones (not proud of that).
4. You provide your IMEI when activating buy it's only to make sure you're not going to use a phone that's been reported stolen from retail. (if a phone is stolen from a retail location the IMEI guess into a database)
I highly advise staying away from Straight Talk - just my opinion but there service on every level is less than respectable.

Hi everyone,
Excuse me for bringing back this topic, but I have a similar question regarding this topic. We're visiting California next week as an European tourist. I'm willing to buy the 30 days unlimited web prepaid deal from t mobile, however I saw that it is for 'US residents only'.
Do they check this? Do you have to provide a passport or something?
We only need Internet for 3 weeks so 30 days is sufficient, it's mainly for navigation purpose on my HTC Sensation.
Another question, is the sim a standard one or is it a micro sim?
Hope you can give us the answer! Can't wait for our visit!
Best regards,
Jasper from the Netherlands.

No they do not check it. You do not need to provide a passport. However you may be required to present an ID. It varies. If you plan to get one at a T-Mobile store, you can request a standard one, or microsim. If for some reason you decide to buy it online, it'll come as a standard similar card.

[Q] Help! online ordering from Best Buy
I just paid for the Nexus S through Best buy, and now I am afraid that I made a mistake. When I added the phone to my shpping cart, it asked me i I am a T-Mobile contract holder (Which i am not) and I said that I do, which gave me the option to buy the phone at the full price of $529. I am afraid that I am going to receive a LOCKED Nexus S with T-Mobile affiliations and that it's maybe not Sim Free.
Is this the case? If so, how do I order it SIM Free and UNLOCKED Online? The only options on the website was to buy it either for $199 with a T-Mobile contract or to buy it for $529, but again, I am not sure if this is fully unlocked or it is still with a T-Mobile Simcard.

AFAIK they are all unlocked - even the phones sold with T-Mo service.
Will the phone say T-mobile on the phone or connected with it in any way ?
nope, box has a tmobile sim in it but noowhere on the phone does it say tmobile
People at best buy online support are complete fools, they keep saying it's locked, even though twitter and their FAQ say its unlocked.
The whole point of Pure Google phone is that it's unlocked and unbranded
All Nexus S phones are unlocked by default with no carrier branding on the phone or box.
Pricing just varies based on if you want a contract or buying outright.

Well, not everybody have the intelligence required to flip burgers.
Best Buy couldn't even get the ordering live until about 10 minutes late ...
Then I tried to order 3 times; each time I got a vague credit verification error that made no sense.
Plus, they tried to switch me from my $10/mo unlimited 3G data to $10/mo 4G data with a 200MB cap... no thanks.
I was able to order by phone, but the process took over an hour. At least I got to keep my data plan.
Total cost was $250 after taxes and activation fees.
hi folks, is there anyone from from non-US/UK manage to buy a Nexus S>? If yes can let me know how? Especial from Malaysia. Thanks..

make sure your phone operator works with 900/1700/2100 data
I bought two on launch day. The second is unopened. PM me if you want to buy it.
Wow!
I have a G1 and tried to upgrade to the nexus s with my existing 24.99 unlimited G1 data plan. The rep in the store said she was pretty sure I had to upgrade my plan. She said she would try it without upgrading my plan and got almost through the entire process but her system would only allow for the full price option for the phone.
Did you do anything special to get them to let it work with your existing plan??
Thanks

Has anyone actually bought this online?
I'm having problems getting Best Buy's site to let me buy this thing. It keeps getting hung up when I select a plan - just keeps asking me if I currently have T-Mo service and won't let me actually select an answer...
Also, since I'm a new customer, would I be able to sign up for T-Mo's promotional plan (1500+unlimited for 79.99)?
You have to go to the store for starting a new plan.
If just happened that you have an extra unit or you're willing to help me, please PM me. THanks; )

That's ridiculous - there's not a single Best Buy here in TN that will sell it with a plan. I suppose none do T-Mo. And my local store says $529.99 - available at Bestbuy.com for $199.99.

[Q] Contract from Walmart?

Now that the Sensation hits at Walmart, can you deal with them just like T-Mobile? Meaning, renew your contract, and everything would be the same?
anyone? thanks in advance.
Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, and all the online retails operate the same. If you are a current T-Mobile customer, they can look up your account to see if you are eligible for an update.
So this means I can do the Equipment Installment Plan, right?

You will not be able to do eip anywhere but directly with T-mobile.
Now how lame will it be if it drops at Wal-Mart before T-Mobile. lol might happen.
I always buy through a T-Mobile store. It's best when you have befriended someone there. They tend to help you out better. Easier for returns too. I'm going to get mine at the store because they know me and love me there. Already been told I can keep my old MyTouch 3g plan still after my upgrade. Big deal for me as T-Mobile is not currently capping that old plan (tested and verified). If I upgraded through anyone else they would put me on an updated soft-capped plan.

Walmart/Amazon: $119.98 HTC One X

I've decided its time to move on from my trusty inspire but would like some feedback as it relates to purchasing a One X.
Currently, both walmart and amazon have the phone at $119.98. If I walk into an ATT Corp store, I'm looking at $250+.
I know many people purchased from amazon back when they had that great deal before the phones release, and I would appreciate feedback from both amazon customers and walmart.

Walmart only carries the black one in store, other than that it is really no different than going to an AT&T store.
If you don't have the unlimited data to keep, you can buy from anywhere. They are the same. Otherwise, it is a hassle to call AT&T to get your unlimited data back because 3rd party online retailers can't let you keep them. I had one experience with Walmart store. Let's put this way, the guy behind the counter has no idea what is a SIM card and why there is a need for SIM card for my AT&T phone. The activation process asked him to get a new SIM card and he had no idea how it looks. Then when he found it and activated my phone, he promptly threw the SIM card into the trash bin. Walmart online runs through a different outlet (wirefly or something).
Got my HOX yesterday from Best Buy. Called ahead and they pricematched amazon for me. Called 2 att stores before and neither could match. just a heads up if anyone reading is interested.
Amazon is excellent. 30 days no questions asked return policy and at least where I live no Sales Tax.
The only caveat is if you're on an unlimited data plan you'll have to add a tiered plan instead then call AT&T and get them to switch you back.
Amazon was very good to me as well.
I've also heard that Walmart isn't bad either.
Still, I would go with Amazon.
I would love to use amazon and or Walmart/bestbuy etc but they don't deal with business accounts, which sucks...

I have a business account and I added a line just fine through amazon.
FYI to anyone attempting to get this deal. It only applies to people who are new customers to att. If you are already in the system the price of the phone would be 179.99 to add a line. Also if you try to cheat the system and get the line in your girlfriends name and then take over responsibility with your account, they will charge you a fee. It has to be a totally new line of service and kept for 6 months to qualify for the $119 price.

I'm not seeing anything that says it has to be new customer @ Amazon. They even have an upgrade check tab on the site of the phone, though I am not happy with having to change the plan to try to get the lower price. I went to AT&T store before I knew about this deal and asked them to PM Radio Shack's 179.00 price and they wouldn't so I bolted. Only probem is that RS only offers in white. Need the Gray one for myself. I should try to call AT&T and biotch about the plan thing but only in advance not after buying and then hoping they revert the plan. I don't currently go above 3GB in a month but I'm on a WM6.5 and who knows where the Data usage will go on a new phone.

I would love to buy from Amazon, but I don't want to give up my 2GB data plan which I pay $20.50 for and my 1000 texts. If I buy from Amazon I won't have an option but to choose 3GB for $30 and either no texts or Unlimited for $20. So it is either pay $200 for the phone at AT&T and pay $30.50 for what I need or pay $120 and add $20 to my monthly bill. I would buy from Amazon if I knew I could get back my data and text plans. I just don't trust I will be able to. Anyone with experience in this matter? Have you been successful in getting back your features/services after buying from a third party?
I price matched at Best Buy. Total came out to be around $160 with tax. However, they allowed me to keep unlimited data, which is more than worth it IMO.

T-Mobile contract sign up?

So I am thinking about starting a contract with T-Mobile because they get decent service where I live and from what I have heard they are cheap. So my question is when I go to set up an account with them will I need to have any cash to sign up? I am broke till payday but really need a phone. If anyone knows I would really appreciate the help. Oh and also I just need 1 line if you have an account with just one line on it could you please tell me what plan you use and what your average bill is. Thanks in advance!
If you sign-up and get a free phone, you will only need a credit card. This way they can charge $1 to it to make certain you're worthy. Of course this is online where you will find the best deals. The stores usually do not have very good deals.
Also I was looking through the Market forum today and found another website http://www.wirefly.com that is seemingly legit to me (I checked my upgrade eligibility and it worked as it should). The deals there are great.
Hope this helps. BTW... T-Mobile has the worst customer care ever, and Asurion, their insurance company, are thieves. Just another FYI.

Buy Gear S 3G no contract

Does anybody know if you can just buy a Samsung Gear s2 3g straight up with no contract, no service setup etc? I want to buy one and just use it with Bluetooth until I decide I like it enough to sign up for service with my phone provider. (AT&T) Also is there a difference in model # between an AT&T or Tmobile etc?
Buy one from whoever you have coverage with. You may have to initially set up a smartwatch plan, but you can cancel it during the first month. If you payed retail for it you now own it.
You should be able to do that with no problem. You will have to pay the full retail price of $299.00 to be able walk away without enabling the 3G. If you decide to activate it, there will probably be some activation fee as well. Better way to do this IMHO is buy it for $199 and commit to 2 years and if you don't like it return it before your 14 day window.
My 3G version has been working great since I got it.
YMMV
I guess some of my issue, is I have AT&T Unlimited Data Plan which is no longer offered by AT&T. In order to have the Gear S2 on my plan, I have to completely switch to a "shared plan" of which I then have to pick a certain data plan size etc. Its not that I download 60gb a month or something, but I like having the grandfathered unlimited data plan. When I go online to AT&T website there is no option to just buy the phone. They make you sign up for a plan with it, hence the problem. I just wanted to flat out buy it, then see if I want to go with a plan later. Thanks for the replies!
I just went to the store and told them it was going to be a gift. Was done in 8 minutes. They did look up my account and such but did not do anything to my plan.
Nice! An AT&T store? Or AT&T in a Best Buy? Where you located? I called last week and they hadn't gotten any in yet.
I am in Dallas, TX. I got it from AT&T. I have not seen the 3G versions at Best Buy.
Wow! I was thinking of getting the 3G version but if I lose my unlimited plan, then maybe I'll have to rethink. Anybody here got it from AT&T and retain their unlimited plan?

Yeah exactly, why I was thinking for now as a Bluetooth watch, and then later if I want to add the plan, but to lose my unlimited would stick. I think it has to be a share plan, as the watch is an extension of your phone, so they share the data. Not sure though

One is not required to purchase a data plan in order to buy the watch. Just have to pay full price, which is $299. I just walked in an corporate AT&T store & bought it outright.

But in online shop you need to create a plan, if no choose the order no pass.

Just wanted to share my experience with trying to get the 3g version without contract...
It has been a nightmare trying to purchase it in a store- att or bestbuy.
Att wanted to charge me $10 /month for just getting the watch while paying the full price for it...
Then I checked on bestbuy's web site, and saw $349 inactivated device (available for pickup same day), so I went to my local store. Needless to say, I was not allowed to purchase it. Wtf... I knew what the att reps are going to say, so I went straight to the Samsung booth, but the poor sales person still had to ask the att reps for permission to sell the watch.. First they said that fir the watch to work, they have to activate it ... Then I pulled the offer on bestbuy's website for the unactivated device... So, they came back telling me that they are out of stock ... LMAO...IDIOTS..
So, I came home and ordered it online from bestbuy.com, mind that it was telling me that I can pick it up the same day from the same local store that "ran out" of it...
I know that att are hungry for every penny they can get their hands on but thought that bestbuy would be smarter...
Regardless, I hate giving them business after all, but my only reasoning is that I want a watch with mic and speaker function, and if something doesn't work right, I can always go back and return it easily rather than dealing with ebay seller's customer service.
I just hope all works well through BT, cause otherwise I have to get the huawei watch and wait for google to allow the use of the speaker. I have nothing against huawei, just that their watch is not my style and I really like the rotating bezel.

That's horrible. That's what happens, unfortunately, when dealing with people who are commission-based.
